Diana and I met at THAT BOUTIQUE I talk about called CHATEAU BEL AGE in San Diego, CALIFORNIA………about four or five years ago NOW!
I have been an overnight GUEST in her HOME and a BIRTHDAY GAL at a DINNER PARTY she had for me last year!
PLEASE LET ME INTRODUCE YOU TO DIANA AMATO here is her story!
I was raised in Upstate New York and moved to San Diego when I was 22 years old. Throughout the years, my home has always been the go to place for dinner parties and family gatherings. My mom and dad would travel from New York a week before a big party and help me create celebrations for 40 or more people right in my home! Hence, I am a self taught chef who has gathered all the handed down recipes and the stories that go with them. I have been inspired to write a cookbook that showcases these recipes, and the healthier versions of some of them. It also tells the story of the amazing women and men who have lived and loved through the food they prepared for their family and friends. I also host cooking classes in my home. This is a new part of the adventure and is just getting started.
HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
I am drawn to lean, long looks. I am 5’9” with really long legs, yet I am also built with a lot of curves. A great pair of jeans, cigarette pants, and yes, leggings are all basic building blocks in my wardrobe. My style is eclectic and at times edgy and street smart, but it is always softened with something very feminine.
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
I love to feel strong and empowered. At times, I use dressing as a way to armor myself. By nature, I am very shy. I’m happy to be in the background just watching. So, when it’s time to go out and about, I choose clothes that make me feel not only comfortable, but also well put together and strong.
WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ACCESSORY?
I love my collection of sunglasses. I have the same Versace pair that Prince wore the day that Bryant Gumbel interviewed him on the Today show, probably over 25 years ago. Living in La Jolla, Ca, I have need for sunglasses almost everyday of the year. I’m also guilty of using them to keep my hair away from my face!
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE COLOR COMBINATIONS?
I love turquoise and orange, fuchsia and black, and I do love black on black.
DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE PIECE THAT DEFINES YOUR STYLE? It’s difficult for me to pick one piece. Although if I really narrow it down, there are two things I can’t be without. The first is a good basic cashmere sweater with a slight v-neck. It is something I use almost everyday of my life around my home. I have been buying the same style cashmere sweater from the Scottish Woolen Mill since I was a teenager! The second is a tapestry crossbody bag from Portmanteau in Portland, Maine. I love this small company! Every year they buy a certain amount of fabric to make all sorts of amazing handmade bags and totes. When the bolts of fabric have been used up, that’s it! You now own a collector’s piece!
WHAT ARE YOUR STYLE STRENGTHS?
I come from an Italian and Polish background and that means very long legs (the Polish side) and a whole lot of curves to go with it(obviously the Italian side). I have to dress to keep everything proportionate. For me this means minimizing the top half and bringing attention to my legs.
DO YOU HAVE A STYLE MUSE?
I adore the Italian film actresses and models because I can easily relate to their body type. For me, the beauty and timelessness of Sophia Loren incomparable.
In today’s world, I adore Monica Bellucci.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE BEAUTY PRODUCTS,AND WHY CAN’T YOU LIVE WITHOUT THEM?
The majority of my skincare regime comes from Skin Medica products. A good face cleanser, vitamin C oil, hyaluronic acid skin serum and a light moisturizer are all part of my daily routine. I have been using these products for years now. After the birth of my son, I developed many dark spots on my face. Over time, with the help of these products and good nutrition, much of this problem has lessened.
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN OVER 50?
I’ll be 55 this year!! We can never drink enough water. I drink alkaline water daily. The health benefits of this for me have been unbelievable. I have struggled with inflammatory issues surrounding my joints and this is definitely one of the things that has helped me the most. Taking time to find balance and peace in this crazy paced world is so important. I love to watch the sunrise with my 8-year-old Australian Shepherd, Leo. The rest of the world is still sleeping while I get a glimpse of the wonderful universe around me.
DO YOU HAVE ANY STYLE RULES THAT YOU LIVE BY,OR DO YOU CHOOSE TO BREAK THE RULES?
I style my life and my wardrobe to be authentic to myself. When I feel comfortable in my environment and in my clothes, I feel invincible! No rules, other than to be true to myself and to let others do the same!
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONLINE AND BOUTIQUE SOURCES?
Locally in San Diego, I do much of my shopping at Chateau Bel Age. It is a unique shopping experience where many one of a kind pieces can be found. It has become a bit of a magnet for me and there are times I just like to stop by there to hangout! I love the cut and fit of Wit&Wisdom jeans from Nordstrom. This jean just understands my body! I have been wearing their brand for over 15 years! Of course, Johnny Was is also my go to for something whimsical, feminine and utterly gorgeous.
DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR DIET OR EXERCISE REGIME THAT YOU FOLLOW?
I follow a fairly easy anti-inflammatory diet which includes lots of berries and citrus, dark leafy vegetables and clean protein like fish and lean beef. High fiber foods, whole-grain breads and legumes keep it all heart healthy. When I use butter, it is European or Irish. And of course, I use plenty of extra virgin olive oil. I walk almost 5 miles every morning and spend 20 minutes everyday stretching.
DO YOU HAVE ANY ANTI-AGING FOODS AND OR SUPPLEMENTS THAT ARE YOUR GO TO’S?
I take folic acid, a good multi vitamin and B12 daily. I think perhaps the best part of the day is to savor a glass of really good wine and appreciate all that I have. Does this qualify as anti-aging?
DO YOU HAVE A FAVORITE DESIGNER YOU ARE DRAWN TO?
There is a beautiful, creative and inspiring young designer here in San Diego. Her name is Jennafer Grace; I call her my Kimono Girl! I adore her designs and her attitude about life as an Artist. I think I actually own one of her original kimonos. They are timeless, so well made and certainly worth the investment.
