IT BRINGS ME A LOT OF JOY!
LET ME INTRODUCE TO YOU SANDRA…………..
I am 5’2 but I say my personality is 6’2, ha ha! I love maxi’s and midi’s and actually prefer to wear them since I don’t like my round knees. I do look for the right proportion and type of material for a nice drape. Too much material or too thick of material seems to wear me verses me wearing it. My rule of thumb is to wear what makes you feel confident and beautiful! My size ranges now between a 4-6, 27-28, xs-sm, and a size 6 for my shoes. On average, I am a small. Funny enough because of my height people assume I am a petite sizing but petites do not fit my torso. They tend to be too short for me. I have a large ribcage so I always have to look for tops and blouses that get past my gymnastic ribcage. ? This is where everyone should really know their body silhouette and go by the best fit. As a wardrobe stylist, I fit every body type and size. All sizing is gorgeous; remember it is always about confidence!
“I want YOU to PROVE THEM WRONG!”
SAYS LA CONTESSA!
Also give us a brief BIO of who YOU ARE!
I am Sandra Veum and I am a Personal Wardrobe Stylist in San Diego, CA. My business is MARIPOSA STYLE and I have had my styling business over 15 years now. I am a mom to a remarkable daughter who just graduated from Cal Poly SLO and is already working in marketing as a Social Media Specialist for a marketing software company. So proud! I have been with my yummy hubby for over 30 years, with 26 of them married. We lived in sin for a few years. 🙂 He is an uber talented architect and specializes in healthcare, corporate, workplace, and houses.
I am a lucky gal who knew her passion of styling and fashion early on and created a business where I can help others be the best version of themselves! I offer closet evaluations where I help you edit, organize, “shop your own closet”, while creating your own “look book”. I help you become more of a strategic shopper while learning where to spend the money and where to save. I like to focus my efforts on my client’s individual needs, body type and budget rather than a specific designer, brand, or store. I believe that everyone can be “effortless chic” with their own individual style and at any price. Individual style comes from a person being inspired, open-minded, and confident with who they are. I help develop your own personal style and integrate it into your life.
I was Fashion Valley Mall’s Personal Stylist/Shopper. I am a Content Contributor and Shopping Blogger for the San Diego Tourism Authority, San Diego’s official travel website, www.sandiego.org. In addition to being a guest speaker for Qualcomm, a keynote speaker for Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, and a guest on various podcasts: The Modern Girl Podcast, The Flipping 50 Show Podcast, The Parker Edison Project from KPBS Radio, The Brett Davis Podcast, and Women’s Hormone Health private Facebook group.
I received invaluable retail experience throughout college. After graduating, I started in a “Manager in Training” program for a specialty chain of retail clothing stores. Then after a short time, an opportunity came my way to develop my skills in the hospitality industry where I spent the next 16 years in sales and marketing. Before my professional career, I graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Textiles & Clothing while receiving a Minor in Business.
1. SANDRA as a wardrobe stylist how would you DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
Funny enough but my style changes all the time. Meaning I like to have a variety to choose from depending on what I feel like when I wake up. Sometimes I feel like wearing a jean ensemble then maybe the next day wearing a dress and then next a culotte ensemble. I change all the time. That is why I believe I do not get bored with my wardrobe. If I had to come up with a quick description it might be “classic with an edge”. My philosophy is to be known as someone with great style and not just a certain genre. I look for fit, material, and a uniqueness in the construction, details, or something just a little bit different. One of my tips is, even if you are trying to downsize, make sure you still have variety of pieces or you will get bored after a while. Life is too short not to play dress up!
2. As a stylist can you define FASHION and STYLE for us?
I personally define the two that Fashion is a visual/inspiration to create your own Style. I feel that Style is your own personal twist or personality on something that was inspired by Fashion. I also feel that Style has no price. Just think of Fashion as constantly evolving and changing but Style should always remain within yourself once you define who you are.
3. What made you go down this path? Is there a GOOD STORY TO SHARE?
There is always a good story to tell! I have always been inspired and intrigued by fashion and style, even as a little girl. I would always watch classic movies with stars like Jean Harlow, Ava Gardner, Bette Davis, Lauren Bacall, Carole Lombard, Greta Garbo, etc. and think, “Wow, I want to dress like that” I also always liked dressing my Barbie dolls up and had multiple changes throughout my playtime creating make-believe events. This also included Ken since Barbie needed a stylish date!
The ironic thing is that I was also a tomboy growing up since my best friend was a boy and I did gymnastics and softball. Where you might think this would contradict my interest in fashion I like to think that it now makes me a good stylist today knowing how to incorporate style into people’s lives while making it functional for them. I am one of the few stylists that I know that actually has a Bachelor of Science degree in Textiles & Clothing with a Minor in Business.
4. What do you LOVE most about your job?
I absolutely love building confidence within people, I just happen to do it through your wardrobe. I like to think of myself as a style concierge. I am here to help people’s lives easier with their wardrobe, closet, packing for trips, shopping, and helping them make smarter choices while getting excited to wear everything in their closet. I love changing people’s lives. I have worked with so many people at so many different parts of their lives both good and bad. If I can bring a smile on someone’s face by doing what I do, then that makes my day! I love hearing how something as simple as wardrobe or a closet can truly inspire people with their life goals. I love what I do!!!
5. What TRENDS TODAY can the over 50 woman DO with confidence?
Let me first start by saying, what can’t women over 50 wear with confidence today, trend or not? I feel that most of us after age 50 really come into our own. We embrace where we are at and accept us for the fabulous women we are. I do remind my clients to remain true to yourself and not try to dress for others. Be mindful of not trying to relive the glory days though. Meaning do not try to compete with your daughters or share clothing. It is important for them to create their own style and come into their own confidence while you evolve into your confidence as a fabulous woman over 50! That does not mean that if your daughter wants to borrow a fabulous tailored blazer or leather jacket from you, that you should not do that. It is more about having your own style as it evolves and letting daughters come into their own. I hope that makes sense. I feel that you can embrace most trends but still focus on your body-type, fit, skin tone, hair color, and lifestyle. If you feel amazing, then wear it with pride, just don’t be wrinkled or sloppy.
6. Favorite Magazine today for FASHION?
For me I still love Harper’s Bazaar & Vogue. A close third and fourth are In Style and Elle. I actually still get in the mail all four of them and love when I can just savor my time going through them. I usually save them for when I am traveling so I can really read them. I used to also purchase the European versions but since Covid they have doubled in price and got so expensive, so I count on my on-line subscriptions and Pinterest for European inspiration.
7. FASHION BOOKS YOU COVET?
HAVE YOU READ ANDRE LEON TALLEY’s BOOK?
THOUGHTS?
I own almost every coffee table fashion book out there. I LOVE them! I usually get them as gifts, my family and friends know me so well. Some of my favorite biographies are: “I’ll Drink to That” by Betty Halbreich. I also have had the pleasure of meeting with her twice when I was visiting NY and became pen pals. 🙂 I also love “Empress of Fashion” about Diana Vreeland, “A Life in Fashion” about Isabella Blow. I also love “Coco Chanel “The Legend and the Life”, and “Grace” memoir of Grace Coddington. In addition to “Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf Goodman”, and last but not least “The Woman I Wanted to Be” by Diane Von Furstenberg.
Finally yet importantly, of course I immediately ordered and read Andre Leon Talley’s book “The Chiffon Trenches”. I loved his background and all of his fabulous stories. It made me wish I were with him in those fashion glory days!
8. When you are helping a client sort their closet what do you zoom in on first?
What is the FIRST THING that you think of to START the EDIT?
I immediately see how they have their clothing organized or not. This tells me how they are living in their closet with wardrobe choices. I do not see messes, I see if they are putting thought into their ensembles. I like to start by asking them ahead of time what items they are having trouble wearing new or not. I also like to ask what their outfit of choice is to feel the most confident in.
We then start to go through the closet asking questions along the way and pulling out the items that they are having trouble wearing. I then start to build outfits around those pieces. With regards to editing, if it is of poor fit, tattered/holes/yellowed, or outdated we start the donate pile. There may be pieces to re-work that we can breathe new life into with a tailor, and then some pieces that we can consign. My rule of thumb is if you have not worn it over two years then time to maybe get rid of it. Also if you are unsure if you want it or not, put it aside for 24 hours and then make the decision. Nine times out of ten, you donate it.
9. Will you SHARE YOUR SKINCARE REGIME PLEASE and tell us about your A) Favorite lipstick B) Favorite Foundation C) Favorite MAKE UP REMOVER.
I actually wash my face with baby shampoo. I then apply “Eye Protection Therapy” by Skin Resource MD for dark circles. Then “Facial Serum” all over my face before my moisturizer. I then put Clarins “Lotus Treatment Oil” all over my face neck and then finish with “Skin Food” cream by Weleda. I also always wear a chapstick of some kind on my lips before bed. I have very dry skin. The daytime I repeat everything, excluding the face oil, but now add Cetephil’s “Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 50+”
- Favorite lipstick is anything from Trish McEvoy and one from Nyx called “Love is a Drug”. I love berry colored lip liners, any brand. I go by the color.
- I first use “The Pore fessional” primer by Benefit and then mix Garnier’s “BB Skinactive 5-in-1 Miracle Skin Perfector” in light/medium. It has SPF of 15 and is anti-aging & a little bit of “Dew You” by Too Faced for a little natural dewiness with my BB Cream. I then finish off my blush with “You’re So Jelly” by Too Faced, for a slight highlight on my cheekbone.
- My fav make up remover is Neutrogena’s fragrance free “Cleansing Towlette”.
- I am adding a secret weapon for bright eyes, which is using “Lumify” whitening eye drops. The best!!
- I also love a jade roller for my face and neck in addition to Nuface Line smoothing device for my face and around my mouth.
10. How often do you see a WELL PUT TOGETHER WOMAN IN San Diego COUNTY?
DOES IT TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY?
DO YOU WANT TO RUN UP TO HER AND COMPLIMENT THE OUTFIT?
DOES IT GIVE YOU JOY?
(VALERIE AND COMPANY NOT INCLUDED!!)
CHATEAU BEL AGE BOUTIQUE 1578 W.LEWIS STREET San Diego, CALIFORNIA
THIS IS VALERIE!
I love that you say that I cannot mention Valerie’s posy! They are fabulous! When I see a woman who truly stands out and just looks put together or unique, I make sure to compliment her. I think we all need to do that more often for each other. I love making people feel good about themselves and I know how much it means to me if someone compliments something I have on. I do feel San Diego is a little too casual at times probably due to our weather. I just love to see when women just add a little pizzazz to their outfit. Even simple ensembles can be picked-up just a bit, by adding some jewelry, a scarf, statement earrings, a hat, or a fabulous cross-body! Whatever suits them. I like to say, “It is like adding an exclamation point at the end of a sentence!
11. How do you decide if a piece of clothing stays in your closet or gets the BOOT?
I try to be compassionate about this process since most people have an emotional attachment to a piece of clothing they are holding onto. Sometimes it is a memory, a weight goal, or a guilt gift. I try to help guide them on what to get rid of and what to possibly keep during this process. My usual recommendation is that if you have not worn it in two years you might need to donate it, gift-it to a friend, or consign it. Do not base any of this on the last 1.5 years of the pandemic since I am calling that a “mulligan” in regards to our clothing usage. I am strict on getting rid of items if it is of poor fit, bad proportion, stained, has a hole, out of style, etc. You never want to look sloppy or not put-together.
12. CAN YOU SHARE WITH US EVERY LITTLE OR BIG ITEM THAT IS IN YOUR HANDBAG?
DO YOU TEND TO USE IT ALL?
I have pretty much shifted to wearing a cross-body at all times. I use both of my hands all the time and I found that my shoulders and neck were hurting so once I switched to a daily cross-body bag I am so much better. What a cross-body does it helps you become more mindful of what you “really need” in your purse. I use everything! My items are:
- A small leather card case to carry my driver’s license, credit cards, cash, and insurance cards.
- A small brush with hairbands
- Small cologne spray
- Eye drops
- Small hand sanitizer
- Cute mask
- Some tissues
- Blisstick- anti friction stick- to prevent blisters from shoes
- A Shout Wipe&Go
- Safety pins
- A couple double sided fashion tape
- Sunglasses
- Readers
- Small make-up bag- only essential for touch-ups
