BOUQUETS & BOLDNESS!

August 1, 2022 77 Comments

 BOUQUETS AND BOLDNESS!

DO YOU EVER WONDER WHY YOU DRESS THE WAY YOU DO?

IS IT BECAUSE YOU HAVE HEARD IT WILL MAKE YOU LOOK SLIMMER?

  OR

YOU SEE OTHER PEOPLE YOUR AGE WEARING SIMILAR GARMENTS?

  OR

YOU COPY WHAT FASHION MAGAZINES TELL YOU TO DO?

  OR

WHAT A COLOR STYLIST’s TELLS YOU TO WEAR?

I WONDER DO WE EVER STEP OUTSIDE OF OUR COMFORT ZONE AS AN OLDER WOMAN?

  I ALWAYS HAD A LOVE OF CLOTHES………..

DON’T ASK ME WHERE THAT CAME FROM AS MY MOTHER DID NOT HAVE A BIG WARDROBE!

I REMEMBER SHE HAD A SILK BROWN AND BEIGE DRESS FROM I. MAGNIN’s.

I LOVED!

I WOULD WEAR HER SHOES AROUND HER BEDROOM FROM TIME TO TIME!

AS THE YEARS FLEW BY I BECAME MORE AND MORE INTERESTED IN CLOTHING!

I ABSORBED THE FASHION MAGAZINES ON THE FLOOR OF THE LOCAL PHARMACY.

I MAJORED IN FASHION MERCHANDIZING AND WANTED TO BE A BUYER!

THAT WAS AFTER THE MODELING IDEA NEVER TOOK OFF.

  I ALSO WANTED TO BE

AN ARCHEOLOGIST – love of ancient and old things

A VETERINARIAN – love of animals

AND

A BALLERINA – loved the stage and those curtains!

MY PARENTS ENROLLED ME IN A MODELING /ETIQUETTE SCHOOL ON MAIDEN LANE.

THE MODELING JOBS IN THOSE DAYS WERE IN NEW YORK AND LOS ANGELES.

I LIVED ACROSS THE Golden Gate Bridge OUTSIDE OF San Francisco.

 A SMALL TOWN called

MILL VALLEY.

I HAD A GIRLFRIEND WHO WOULD SHOP AT A PARTICULAR STORE IN Walnut Creek.

I HAD NEVER GONE IN AS THEY HAD EARTHY SHOES IN THE WINDOWS LIKE CLOGS…….

THEY WERE AND STILL ARE NOT ME!

I WOULD FEEL I WOULD BREAK MY ANKLE WEARING THEM!

BUT WHAT CAUGHT MY ATTENTION ONE DAY WAS WALKING BY AND THEY HAD A SALE RACK OUT FRONT!

MY MOTHER AND I WERE BIG SALE SHOPPERS IT HAD TO BE A BARGIN!

HOWEVER, MOST OF THE TIME IT WASNOT A COMPLETE OUTFIT.

LET ME INTERRUPT THIS PRESENTATION WITH MISTER BANKSY BOY!

  BANKSY BOY LOVES HIS SNACKS.

MID-MORNING CHEERIO’S!

IT WAS MY FAVORITE CEREAL GROWING UP!

  STILL IS TODAY.

IF I WERE NOT GRAIN FREE………

WHAT A BORE THAT IS!

LET’S GET BACK TO THAT SALE RACK!

THE RACK WAS FULL OF HEAVY LINEN COLORFUL PANTS.

  THEY WERE $20.00 EACH!!!

 WITH A FULL CUT LEG!

Bryn Walker HAS A SALE EVERY SEASON .

FIRST IT GOES TO 30%.THEN 50%.THEN LAST SALE IS 70% off.

I HAVE FOUND OVER THE YEARS TO BUY THE COMPLETE OUTFIT!

AS YOU WILL NOT FIND IT COME SALE TIME!

THAT IS MY TRICK…….

  LESS SALE ITEMS.

MORE TWO PIECES THAT GO TOGETHER; AS ITS A COMPLETE OUTFIT.

HERE IN Northern California WE CAN WEAR MOST FABRICS YEAR ROUND.

THAT IS A PERK!

WE DO NOT HAVE THE Southern California SUN GOING ON HERE……….

THAT FOG ROLLS IN AND BURNS OFF, BUT THE SUN ISNOT SMILING ALL THE TIME!

  IT DOES GET COLD!

I KNOW YOU EAST COASTERS ARE LAUGHING AT ME!

  I DESERVE IT!

HERE IS ANOTHER BRYAN WALKER OUTFIT.

  MADE OF COTTON.

ALL THEIR CLOTHES ARE MACHINE WASHABLE.

YOU WOULD THINK I AM DOING A SALES PITCH.

 IAM NOT.

NO PAY BACK HERE FROM SENDING YOU THERE!

SINCE I GET A FEW COMMENTS ON MY CLOTHES I THOUGHT I WOULD SHARE WITH YOU

BECAUSE

THAT’S WHAT BLOGGING IS TO ME.

ABOUT SHARING AS WE GROW OLDER……..OUR UPS AND DOWNS WHAT WORKS.

WHAT DOESN’T WORK.

 WHAT WE LOVE

WHAT WE MISS

AND WHAT WE LOVE ABOUT THE BOUNTY

OF GROWING WISER AND OLDER……….

IT ALSO IS A GOOD WAY TO KEEP A DIARY OF YOUR LIFE!

IN AN ODD WAY KIND OF SELFISH OF ME SHARING MY LIFE WITH YOU,BUT MOST OF YOU SEEM TO ENJOY IT.

IF YOU HAVE THE TIME TELL ME BELOW WHY YOU READ BLOGS?

Somehow I missed this post. I agree with Sandra I love you in that white dress! I know that is drab for our Contessa but it looks fab on you! I am sure you were the one that introduced me to Bryn Walker. I love her linen pants. As I said I cannot wear the whole outfit or it overwhelms me but I sure love them as separates. I re-subscribed to your blog. Now let’s see if I get your posts. I wonder if anyone else has that problem.

Elizabeth another wonderful post of your and your menagerie looking beautiful and the animals entertaining. I will have to take a look at BW, my wardrobe is mostly dress, cashmere sweaters and lots of coats. I think I have a problem with coats and bags but I am from the Midwest and wee need a variety of outdoor clothing. Classic pieces that are comfortable that’s my style.
I too wanted to be an archeologist, even studied it for awhile and then changed majors.
To answer your query on my blog, I donate, save and give lots of books away when finished. I also do not watch tv, and will occasionaly watch a movie so I have lots of down time in the evenings to read.
Tell me Elizabeth, what are you reading lately?
Have a great and thank you for your comments.

You always look wonderful and so colourful. I wear black most of the time with touches of white and grey ! Very different to you but thats what I like …. how everyone is different and has their own style. I love clothes that have Victorian and Edwardian influences to them I know my style …. I think its very important to know your style and stick to it . Never follow fashion …. just buy and wear what you like and that suits you. There wasn’t much fashion for the young in the 1950’s but, as a teenager in the 1960’s things started to change and London was a centre for diverse fashion. Biba in Kensington was my favourite shop and I was always in there ….. we would spend the whole day there and see The Beatles, The Rolling Stones Freddie Mercury …. anyone who was anyone shopped there and it wasn’t expensive. and there were so many individual boutiques then ….. now, it seems, every shop sells the same thing. I don’t like to harp back to the old days but, it was a magical time. XXXX

For all the reasons mentioned by those who have commented, your blog is the ONE & ONLY.. .every post is like an elixir for the mind and heart… captivating, artistic, beautiful, thought provoking, sweet, funny : ) and as many said, always honest. A rare jewel. I often feel you are reading my mind–your musings, curiosity, rhetorical questions, opinions.–and others obviously feel the same way. The common denominator is probably our AGES, but there is something timeless as well. Good character, kindness, empathy, wit and wisdom don’t have expiration dates : ) Like most, I remember playing dress-up and feeling like I was a real princess (a large cardboard moving box held cast-offs from my mother and grandmother.) I was also IN LOVE with a gray felt flapper hat (and long strings of pearls), and upon seeing this all the time, my Aunt named me ‘Mae-Moe,’ Perusing your photo journal is like grown-up dress up for me : ) My wardrobe is simple, classic and not dramatic… why I adore your style!! I just ordered a tan linen blouse from BW, and discovered her line is at Dillard’s, yay!
Already looking forward to the next post : )

    Hi there CONTESSA
I only read 2 (regular postings) and 2 infrequent blog postings. Yours of course is one of them! I do like to follow a few people on instagram. You again! Your blogs are always informative – stimulating and entertaining. Good involvement from your readers.
Shoes for walking – I now wear KEEN – bought them in the spring – they are waterproof which one needs here due to all the rain we get. Can walk in them for hours. I LOVE to walk but every once in awhile something quirky happens to my foot and I get sidelined. So frustrating. So WALK when/while you can. I walk mostly alone here there everywhere. On my neighbourhood walks I have met some nice gardeners who offer me veggies from their garden. Last week I went up the mountain with a group – oh my the 84 yr old was so mobile compared to me (I will be 74). – in fact most of the women have been hiking for decades. No hiking for me only walking.
Unfortunately I do not have a love for clothes. This always annoyed my mother who loved clothes. I do love jewelry. We wear a uniform at work = beyond dull and boring – I’m always hoping that one day Giorgio Armani will design our uniform.
Your pics always enhance your blog = colourful.

I hate walking as well although last winter, Annie had surgery on her knee and needed three months of rehab which meant walking twice a day. We built up from 1 minute, twice a day, to 30 minutes, twice a day. By the end of our three months, I was in great shape! Weight was perfect. Slim and trim. On to Clogs…. Ugh! Birkenstock sandals… Ugh! I can’t bear the thought of these. Reminds me of other footwear I don’t like. When I first met James, I told him I didn’t like men wearing flip flops, and he threw his one pair away. xoxo, Brenda

I really love that last look on you. Which kind of surprises me because I do so enjoy seeing you in bright color. That monochromatic look with the pearls is quite stunning though! I love to read blogs for pure enjoyment, to make connections with people, and to get inspiration in either writing, fashion or art.
I seem to get all of that here, LA CONTESSA!
I have also loved fashion growing up and now as an older woman, I feel myself being more free in my style. I did not work in fashion at all, mostly sports and recreation! I love to thrift and vintage shop. So my wardrobe is quite the mix. I find though, if I truly love something it will go with almost everything I own. I’m a true mix ‘n match girl. I also find I prefer skirts over shorts in the summer now. Well, I adore your style! I’m on the shorter side and so don’t look quite as elegant in the longer clothing. Although my kaftan is very flattering and I absolutely love it! I’ve gotten a few compliments on it from strangers (once at the coffee shop and another time while shopping at the grocery store 😀

Now that is a question – not sure where my love of dressing came from either . I find I like to have fun and play more with my style as I age but also find we know our bodies more and what really suits us. You certainly have nailed your style with your beautiful caftans , big hats and Bryn Walker always acessorised as only you can. It was such a treat to see you in your beautiful garden.
I follow a variety of blogs covering many topics of interest to me. I quite enjoy walking and try to walk rather than take the car these days , walking our dog, Raffy and walking and talking with friends makes it more fun too.

Cara Contessa, I love seeing you in the garden in the green outfit and hat – majestic and soft at the same time! And the last outfit is gorgeous too. Just today, I had to search my wardrobe to find just the outfit that fit my mood – a muted Johnny Ws geometric tunic with soft jeggings and Eileen Fisher sandals. I felt harmonious head to toe and inside/out. Those days of harmonious emotional dressing are so lovely., and bring compliments. I too hate walking. Dancing a bit is good, but with current neck pain movement hurts. I need patience and acceptance. Your photos give me lush sensations of nature at a needed time. Thanks.

Yours is guaranteed to be fun AND informative.
I’ve learned about style, cooking, gardening, health… always a surprise what the topic will be.
AND you write with humor, empathy and most importantly honesty.
    I love that!
I don’t have any health tips to share, but I can concur that I too hate walking..what a pain.
I love gardening and looking the best I can. In the words of British designer Vivianne Westwood, “Dress up.. you’ll have a better life”. That might be translated as “care about yourself”
This in a nutshell is one message your blog offers. Again, I love it! Don’t change a thing.

Good question! Where does that love of clothing come from? Growing up, I had to be very creative with the hand-me-downs that my sister gave me. I was a real pro at rolling the waistband of a too long skirt! One of my fondest memories was taking the bus downtown to Bullock’s Pasadena. I remember going to lunch at the tea room there and enjoying the fashion show. I think that is when I decided that dressing up was definitely for ME! As an older person, my clothing choices are more about just having fun. And you know what? I am a girl that just wants to have FUN! I enjoyed your blog today. Your garden is so green and gorgeous. It’s so hot down here in San Diego! My garden is needing a lot of TLC! Please send some cool weather my way!

Bryn Walker items can be found at Dillard’s, FYI. Reading blogs has been inspirational, informative, and sometimes just plain enjoyable. Sometimes I look to the author to be that friend that is sharing what goodies she has discovered and I too might want to try. For instance, Txtanya is doing the Amazon purchases link up today so I cruise over there and see if any goodies she has found would make my life easier. Or it’s that friend that’s sharing her love of animals and antiques and how she’s gracefully growing older. I recently moved to a beautiful place (Hawaii) to spend my second half of life and I will be outdoors and walking more than my previous location which had four seasons. My only problem is now, what hair style and clothes will work for me in this environment. I know my preferences of what clothes I like and don’t like but now I have to consider the environment as well. Wearing jeans or light weight cardigans is just too much weight on me and causes lots of sweat. I need light weight and also no need to iron, so for me, linen is NOT the answer. It sure would be nice if those companies who make UPF clothing could make some nice looking ones for women that aren’t just PFG style (professional fishing guide- I think- looking at you Columbia) or just made from hot nylon or just sleeveless or short dresses (Lily). I have had many Mohs surgeries already and need to have UPF clothing and EVERYONE BUY STOCK in Sunscreen because I will be using it daily and multiple times a day here. Listening to a color & stylist has not worked for me because 1) who can find kingfisher in a garment color? 2) I’m not going to be wearing golds and browns while living in Hawaii 3) Then there’s the problem that she was located in a very different place than I was years ago and thus, did not know what my stores carried so I wasn’t interested in buying from international stores only. Sorry this is long. Bottom line, which I saw today on Jennifer’s blog, awellstyledlife, buy clothes for the life I have. And when I look good, I feel good & that’s empowering. Have a lovely week!

Hello, Bryn Walker … you need to sign up our favorite Contessa straight away! Modeling, spokes person-ing … all the things. These days I pretty mush wear a sports stye bra every day. Putting on the old bras with underwires is uncomfortable. How did I do it for years, decades, day after day? Remember panty hose? Or nylons as I called them. Oof. Anyway, your style suits you, looks effortless and chic. As for walking. I love to walk. I didn’t used to love it. But when Jim insisted we bring home a Labrador puppy (twenty or more years ago) it became essential. She needed walks and lots of them, in addition to day care for lots of play with friends. I’ve said that Sasha, our Labrador, was my personal trainer. And now, with our little dogs same thing. Walking everyday. If they don’t get a good walk they get into mischief. But I love it. I listen to podcasts … there are so many wonderful and entertaining podcasts … I never want our walks to end. Books are fun also … and if it s a really good book you walk farther and farther! Convinced yet?! You know I love blogs. Like Oprah, I love to see how other people live. Especially people like YOU. La Contessa! xo

Oh, I hate walking too. I tried this morning, I went to a nearby park to walk in the shady part, when a squirrel ran in front of me, then turned and stood in his hind legs and wouldn’t move as I shooshed him away. I snuck around him, then went for a brief walk, but the SoCal heat go the better of me so I turned around and got in my car and drove home.

Honestly, I hate getting old. I’m 71, and pre-pandemic I was very active, and dyed my hair and looked a decade younger. Now I have a full head of silver, I hide in my house, afraid of Covid, and squirrels, and mosquitos, et al. I’ve turned into a depressed, humbug old lady.

I did treat myself to a breakfast out, alone, on the terrace of a local coffee shop. The sweet young waiter was very kind and the day looked promising. Then I decided to take that walk in the park, and well, you know how that went.

Thanks for listening. I love the clothes you show. I love fashion, though I usually dress like a toddler with my yoga pants and Tshirts. Hermit style, you might say.

You are a delight to read. Thanks for posting and sharing your life.

OH! What a doll you are to respond so lovingly to my comment. I will DM you my IG handle, and you can see what my life is made up of. I have seen Sandra Sallin’s post in the past, usually because you mention her. I will definitely follow her, right away. I recall that she is an artist, which I have dabbled in. Now I try to focus on music…the key word “TRY”. I have a terrible habit of paying too much attention to Twitter, so I depress myself and focus on nothing but bad news.

Again, I love your posts!! You have a beautiful home, beautiful clothes, and wonderful husband. I’m especially enchanted by the green door. Certain colors bring joy, don’t they?
It’s Saturday night as I write. Have a wonderful Sunday, and week. I will be watching a noir movie on TCM. Or maybe that new movie Mrs. Harris Goes to Paris. I think I can rent it on Amazon Prime. Hubby and I leave for a one night out-of-town trip soon. Yay, me, so brave.

        A pronto!

What a lovely post, Contessa. You know that I really enjoy seeing your gardens, particularly, if YOU are pictured in them as well. Someone else already commented on this, but I feel the same way: when I read your blog, it is as if you are talking to me. You are interested in what your readers think about various things, whether they be issues, flowers, health, or travel. I, too, have always loved clothing, but am nowhere near as talented as you in that department. In high school, I made almost all of my own clothes, and I later made wedding gowns for my sister and myself. I don’t care for anything trendy, as I want to keep and wear clothes for a long time. About half of my style is classic and timeless, and the other half is Bohemian. They don’t intersect as styles, but each has its place with me. As to blogs, I need to be interested in what the author has to say; I regularly read very few. I want really good decorating tips, interesting clothing features, beautiful gardens, and thoughtful, intelligent writing. Thank you for sharing your life with us, your sense of humor, and your incredible style.

Mill Valley –yay! That sweet little town was home-base for me from 1980 to 2006. I also remember the 36 steps up, just to get to the front door, then another 14 inside to reach the kitchen level of my house — I was younger then. 🙂 Now I’m in Scottsdale, AZ, with just 15 steps up to my entryway. Piece of cake, most days…… life’s good. Keep on walking!

Dear Elizabeth, What a lovely blog today,I always love your style of dressing and ADORE the limey- green outfit. And the beautiful hat. Perfect! I only have one precious Bryan Walker piece,a gorgeous bright blue linen top which I bought on holiday in Florida years ago. Lovely with white wide leg trousers. Unfortunately Bryn Walker aren’t here in the U K otherwise I would buy more. My secret of dressing now that I am well over middle age , is plain two pieces or dresses with masses of bracelets and earrings to distract the eye from wrinkles and sags. It works for me! I can’t cope with patterns, I get easily bored with them Love and best wishes from Judy in Brighton UK

Wonderful reflections! You are certainly the epitome of finding your personal style expression and a wonderful model for Bryan Walker. Even though I like flowy clothes I do not feel attractive in Bryan Walker somehow. My body does not love to walk as much as it did so my preference is to dance. Take me to Paris or New York though and I will easily get 15,000 steps per day in.

Walking is a habit that one cultivates not unlike tending the garden…I walk along scenic areas of our city. Mostly the seashores…I listen to the birds, look at the boats and people playing on the beaches. No ear buds for me! I breathe in the salty sea air and just put one foot in front of the other. Walking with a friend makes the time fly by!
I only have one Bryn Walker piece but I love it…I am a dedicated Eileen Fisher client!

I was a fashion merchandising major too and a buyer for two local chains. I have always loved clothes too. I learned how to sew so that I could make them as a teenager. My mother was not interested in clothes at all, but her mother WAS.

    Walking? Hmmm…
First, don’t think if it as exercise or a chore; it’s a way to unwind and connect with nature. Try strolling around a flat neighborhood with houses and gardens to look at. The Lafayette Moraga trail, starting near Stanley School is a good choice. Or, Moraga Country Club, which is open to walkers on Monday mornings (although there are some small hills).
Then, listen for birds, watch for squirrels or bunnies, or even other people walking their dogs. It’s always a treat when a bunny hops across your path.
I know a lot of people enjoy listening to podcasts or books on tape, but I can’t stand having those ear bud things in my ears! Besides, I prefer to be in the moment, absorbing all that’s around me.
Finally, take your time. It’s not a race, it’s a walk!

As always a great post. Since I live in a big city there is always something to see on my walks. Yes, I read many blogs…mostly lifestyle or book focused. Yours, of course, as well as several you have mentioned. I don’t do many dedicated to fashion nor do I often write about fashion on my blog…unless something strikes my eye during couture and ready to wear weeks. I am also interested in classics that stay with us. You are a great example of finding your style and staying with it. Our Randolph Street Market, features many vintage fashion vendors, and after the 2 1/2 year hiatus I’m writing two posts a month on their website…one on classics always being new (think animal prints, plaid, floral, etc.) the other is on collectibles. Your caftans are most certainly classic and on trend right now! Keep telling your stories I always enjoy them.

YOU, my dear, are my twin sister from another mother! I found myself agreeing with all your likes and dislikes! So Uncanny!
Only other differences are that YOU ARE GORGEOUS and I REFUSE to wear a bra these days – TOO UNCOMFORTABLE and RESTRICTING ! I will only wear one if I have to go to the Doctor or somewhere important. Otherwise, it is a seamless shaping tank that I wear under loose clothing. My pants have to be the pull on loose type pants, too ! I cannot deal with belts or zippers around the waist….TOO UNCOMFORTABLE and RESTRICTING! Lol! I just LOVE YOUR STYLE! FROM YOUR HEAD TO YOUR TOES!
I, too, tried out to be a model ( too short back then at 5 foot 7), obsessed with archeology – ancient civilizations, as well – used to visit the Museum every Friday -for over a decade- after work before I got married….thought about becoming a vet – you know my love of animals! ( But I just have a ‘thing” when it comes to reptiles….cute from afar..)…and did you say BALLERINA….that was one of my hopes! Parents were too cheap to enroll me in ANYTHING I truly LOVED. I remember my father saying he would only enroll me in JUDO so I could learn self defense…ugh…anyway, we are VERY similar in our likes and dislikes, Elizabeth! Don’t even get me started with…. WALKING….
