NEW FRIENDSHIPS REQUESTED!

December 6, 2022 54 Comments

I have a reader here who has asked me to write a post on being an older woman who has found herself alone as friends and family aren’t near by.I think it is a GREAT IDEA AND MAYBE WE CAN START AN EMAIL TELEPHONE CHAIN IN ORDER TO MAKE NEW FRIENDS!

She lives in an apartment building in Los Angeles and has lost three friends in one year due to illness or moving out of state! She saw these women frequently if not daily! What I would like to know from any of you living in the Los Angeles area would you be up for a MEET UP?

A COFFEE OR LUNCH GET TOGETHER?

BEFORE THE HOLIDAYS?

THINK OF IT AS BIRDS OF A FEATHER MUST FLOCK TOGETHER!

I RECENTLY FOUND THE ARTISTS WEBSITE OF THIS DELICIOUS CUP BELOW!

    TAP RIGHT HERE!

I AM NOT DEMANDING A HAT EVENT BUT IT MAY BE FUN IN THE SPRING!

I’LL LEAVE THAT UP TO YOU LADIES!

Heck I may even fly in to say HELLO!

If you are available please either send me your email and phone number and NAME OF COURSE or leave a comment below. THAT YES you are interested.

(I WILL HAVE YOUR EMAIL if you leave a comment!)

MY EMAIL IS : iolacontessa@gmail.com

TRANSLATION IS:    I THE COUNTESS at GMAIL.COM

(As LA CONTESSA was taken way back in the day when we started email so WE CAME UP WITH THIS SILLY EMAIL!

(Think I shared that story a couple times already!)

IN A NUTSHELL THAT ITALIAN TOLD ME I NEEDED A SECRET CODE NAME!

 ONWARDS TO CONNECTING EACH OTHER……

BETTY CONNECTING WITH THE MEN IN RED BELOW!

MY Los Angeles READER’S THOUGHTS ARE:

  1. Lonely woman are a national problem.  Some appear to have lost all their friends over time and find it difficult to make new ones.
  2. They need not be only single women.
  3. They may be more comfortable initially just giving their email addresses.Telephone numbers could be optional.

I have domestic and international friends who I am in touch with via email and, on occasion, telephone but, locally, I have no intimate friends any more. Personally, I would very much like to find two or more people who are local to me here in L.A. for conversation/occasional meet-ups, and who, on a reciprocal basis could be of assistance if needed.Regarding the latter, I am currently in good health both mentally and physically so this is not a pressing issue.

I am active and have many interests but a lot of what I do involves working from home alone. I very much miss the three friends who died this year. They all lived in my apartment building so we talked or saw each other often. One I talked with daily.    Two other friends have moved out of state. All are sadly missed.

The nearest good friend lives about a 40 minute drive away, via freeway, so would not be available in an emergency.  She also has her hands full with husband, teenage son, and full time demanding job.

There must be many women who would like new friendships either close by, within the country, or even internationally.

 CONTESSA SAYS

IF you are interested in connecting here via LA CONTESSA let me know either by email or comment below.I adore putting people together! As someone said,I should have had a Connect A Person App long ago!

I think this is a GRAND IDEA as I have found BLOGGING AND INSTAGRAM;

NOT WHAT ONE WOULD EXPECT ARE THE REACTIONS;I HAVE RECEIVED IN THE PAST.

SO I TEND TO WRITE THE WAY I TALK!

I WAS EVEN TEASED ABOUT IT GROWING UP.

Losing dear familiy members and close friends is heartbreaking indeed … after these sad experiences one knows that life will never be as it was before. Something very precious has gone forever. Thankfully I am not lonesome but I do miss them all and wish I had felt more lucky when all these loved ones where alive and around me.
My English is very bad today … sorry …. I wish you all a merry Christmas, luck, health and a happy New Year in peace. XO Edith from Austria

I understand losing friends and family and being alone at a certain age because that’s happened to me. It reminds me of when my mother experienced the same thing. It’s isolating and heartbreaking. I’m in San Antonio, so I wouldn’t be good for weekly lunches… unless a group is flying to LA, then count me in! xoxox, Brenda

    Hi Contessa!

I like the little poem from Rosemarie, above. And I was very touched by this post. I hope that this woman can find some friends as a result of what you wrote here today. Lots of good suggestions are provided by your readers, on whom you can always depend. It truly does feel good to do things for others. I just found a bunch of books to give to an inner-city Little Free Library that a neighbor sponsors, and am myself collecting clothing for an inner-city middle school; the responses I have gotten to my request, as well as the responses here today serve to restore my faith in humankind. Thanks for all you do for us, without even realizing it! Have a lovely Christmas and a restful holiday, my friend.

    Hi there CONTESSA
So good of you wanting to make/help connections for your LA reader. Sad to read that her close friends are no longer in her bldg.
Working from home certainly does curtail going out and about connecting with people.
I live as you know in Canada so of course could not connect in person but could send her a card or 2.
I find as we age making “friends” is harder – it’s more acquaintances that we make.
Yes lots of clubs one can join – courses we can take – volunteer work etc – but again these may just connect us with acquaintances. I’m sure thru your network she is bound to get a “friend”.
Here is a poem that I still remember – my Grade 4 teacher wrote it in the autograph book that I won in the class spelling contest:
A friend is one who understands
What’s in the heart of you
Who stands for all your little faults
    Because they’re part of you

Elizabeth, I met you and I love your voice (and yes it was not what I expected after reading your blog for several years). A friend gave me that same birds-with-hats mug for my birthday one year (along with loose tea) – I love it. And finally, some people are surrounded by neighbors and friends, but yet they are still a bit lonely. Also, Covid has negatively impacted many relationships to some extent, but hopefully they can regain lost ground (like Ukraine!).

I’m so tardy in responding to your post.
You have such a good heart. The aging process is so difficult. It was so good that the lady in Los Angeles reached out to you and shared where she is at. When you experience a decline in your health and your friends and the passing of
family and friends your world becomes very small. The elderly (don’t care for this word) often get over looked. They become so vulnerable. I was raised on total respect for them.
I just wanted to acknowledge the fabulous birthday hat that your friend Patricia Murphy created for you. A labor of pure love. She is a keeper.

Contessa, How kind of you, always reaching out and connecting like minded friends. My heart goes out to your reader/friend and she is not alone. I believe loneliness, especially as we age, is of epidemic proportions. For those with small and spread out families, no family, strained and estranged family relations, growing older is particularly difficult and especially so around the holidays. If I lived in LA I’d be out for coffee (cocoa) with your friend in a hot minute. By all means share my email address if you think we are on the same wave length. I love all your photos today … and the crown! No one leaves the Contessa’s home without having had a good number of laughs. Sorry to see you signing off for the year, but you have things to do … it’s already December 8th. Yikes. Hope to see more holidays-the-Contessa-Way over on Instagram when you have the time. Merry merry! xo

Well please give Banksy a Merry Christmas kiss from me. Always will remember Banksy’s video of the dash about near the Christmas tree. “No one hurt in the rumble”.

At first glance I thought you were responding to a comment I left on a recent post… maybe there would be a way–if readers chose to participate–to give you our names and emails and the city and state (or country) we live in (sent to your email) and then you could do a blog post post organized by state with contact info. Also could include a couple of lines about ourselves. Then we could reach out to others who follow you who are close enough to where we live. Obviously would be many more misses than hits, but one never knows. The common denominator is a v. good one–we all love you!! Just an idea : ) The difficulty meeting new friends is hard at any age, but much harder as we get older.
You are a Christmas fairy godmother to all of us!!
    Merry Christmas, dear Contessa XO

    Hi Elizabeth,
This is so nice of you, to be the matchmaker for another woman in your tribe! You’re so good at pairing up people and I’ve been lucky meeting some great women through you.
I’m going through roughly the same thing, “couple friends” that are no longer there in my life. I’ve been pondering how to get out and about to meet new people that are open to developing relationships. “Lifelong Learners’ through the university is one group I’ve considered checking out. They do all sorts of things and are open to whomever wants to show up. Also, there’s a ukulele club that’s been meeting weekly for over 20 years! Now that sounds like fun! Of course the classes I teach put me in touch with a lot of wonderful women, even if just for the afternoon it’s fun to chat and get to know people.
I hope you have a wonderful Christmas. Is your tree up yet? I just baked my second batch of cookies and think I will be done after one more batch tomorrow. After baking 7-10 types of cookies every Christmas I’m scaling way back!

I’m not sure it will attract more readers but it’s not expensive to update and the young lady who does it for me is really sweet and helpful.
I have had a crazy busy day at work and then had to go to the supermarket so I am feeling rather sleepy but I have 12 days of vacation starting from tomorrow. It will be nice to have some time for myself.
I have an idea about something that I would like to do but I will email you about it.

That was very kind of you to do this Elizabeth. It can be so challenging to meet new friends at the later stages of our lives. I feel like as a recent empty nester, a lot of people are struggling with this and they don’t feel a connection to those they previously socialized with before through their kid’s school and activities. I have been fortunate through playing tennis at my small club and with blogging to connect with new peeps. I wonder if there are any fun things this lady can also join like a Mahjong group? Three of my friends in different locals recently started this and others have just started playing pickle ball too..
You’re always doing good work and thinking of others. Sending you hugs for a beautiful holiday. xoxo
