THE RETIREMENT of 2025.

January 9, 2026 71 Comments

HAPPY HEALTHY NEW YEAR TO ALL OF YOU HERE TODAY!

I thought I would start the NEW YEAR with a RECAP of LAST YEAR and the RETIREMENT!

HOW IS IT GOING YOU ASK?

The retirement happened one year ago January FIRST 2025

My first thought was how will I keep him BUSY?

He is not one to sit and READ nor watch Television NOR PLAY GOLF!

HOW IS IT GOING ?

Well,I honestly ask myself WEEKLY, because I am not sure!

My first thought was “OH WE CAN GROCERY SHOP TOGETHER AND HAVE LUNCH TOGETHER!

I was getting EXCITED for the TIME TOGETHER!

HE DOES TAKE ME GROCERY SHOPPING,BUT ASKS TOO MANY QUESTIONS!THE OTHER DAY IN THE PRODUCE AISLE HE ASKED,”WHY ARE YOU BUYING MORE POTATOES?”MY reply was “DON’T ASK QUESTIONS!”

THE produce lady who is my FRIEND turned around TO TAKE A LOOK!I saw the smile on her face!He did point out the CILANTRO; I had picked up packaged in a plastic box was twice as much as the fresh bunch!

I did give him that WIN!

GOOD CALL HUBBY!

GROCERIES ARE AT AN ALL TIME HIGH HAVE YOU NOTICED?

I don’t think our HEAD of STATES has ever been in a grocery store……….think about THAT FOR A MINUTE!

I did have an IDEA at the time he retired that he could be our neighborhood HANDYMAN!

HE LOVES PEOPLE and HELPING OTHERS.

HE IS A PEOPLE PERSON!

EVEN TIGRE had thoughts about HOW WILL PAPA STAY BUSY?

PAPA or THE ITALIAN as you know him tells TIGRE to get off the table and to stop scratching the furniture when he is HOME!

So, Tigre HANGS OUT here on his little PURPLE TUFFET trying to be COOL!

NOTE the little purple TUFFET is made out of ANTIQUE coat hooks!

A BRILLIANT IDEA………not mine I found it that way.

SLICING PROSCIUTTO for lunch time HOUSE GUESTS with BETTY!

SHE ALWAYS gets to TASTE TEST!

BETTY is incredibly patient and polite.

Has incredibly good manners for a dog and better than some people I know!

Do you think parents TODAY TEACH TABLE MANNERS?

That would be an interesting survey!

I THINK ALL OF US OVER 60 KNOW THAT ANSWER ALREADY!

ALWAYS A SMILE WHEN WORKING!

Have I mentioned HE STOPPED EATING LUNCH?

WHY YOU SAY?

Because he isNOT MOVING AS MUCH as when he REALLY WORKED!

He would get up at 4 am.Be home by 7:00.pm.Long days for a very long time.

YEARS in fact.I always complained I spent MY LIFE waiting for him to come home.

Now he sleeps until 7:30 or 8:00 am and HE LOVES IT!

I am the one getting up way too early, so we have traded routines basically!

HE took over washing up the dishes after dinner and the POTS and PANS!

Without me ASKING!

He also sorts the laundry on Friday or SATURDAY mornings and starts the washing machine!

WHAT A GIFT HE HAS GIVEN ME!

I FEEL RETIRED!

I still am in charge of the DINNER…………..really my only job!

This photo is from 1987 so the ITALIAN is 27 years old. This is a photo of when he had been working for a few years. With our FIRST BORN.This baby of mine LOVED TO EAT!

See the spoon in his hand.He always ate with a utensil never his HANDS.

He was taught table manners from birth!

When I look at these photos I realize how fast it all really did go!

Did I do what I wanted to do?Did I enjoy what I did?DId I have fun while doing it?

GUESS THATS A TOPIC FOR ANOTHER BLOG POST!

But the SHORT ANSWER IS YES!

With the exception of ONE DREAM!

I SO WANTED A SMALL FARMHOUSE with ANIMALS GALORE!

IT’s TOO LATE as I do not have the STAMINA or ENERGY to care for them now.

Somehow that TRICKLED DOWN to the SONS.

Which makes me VERY HAPPY!

A LITTLE WELDING IN THE GARDEN FOR MY ROSE ARBOR!

As you can see here he rebuilt part of the fence.Trimmed my BANKSIA ROSE back in doing that then decided to make it an arbor when there is practically nothing left of it THE ROSE that is.

At this point all I can DO IS SMILE……..he likes THE MANICURED LOOK.

I THRIVE WITH THE CASCADING, ROMANTIC, LOST GARDEN KINDA LOOK.We couldn’t be MORE different in our opinions!

I HAVE HAD TO HAND OVER THE GARDEN TO HIM……….which was ALWAYS MY DOMAIN.

Yesterday, he started the front yard and told me the two rosemary bushes were DEAD.Could he take them OUT!Sure I said without really thinking……….

I was NEEDED for A CONSULT on a different matter later in the morning on the rhododendrons. One was dragging on the ground and growing through the BIG ONE!Did I want him to make a support for the low growing one?

That would be nice I said, thinking it will give him something to do not that I really wanted more supports showing. Then I saw the DAMAGE!The WHITE ROSEMARYI had purchased years ago from my favorite nurseryman, who is no longer there was now on the street awaiting a garbage bin!Tears started welling up in my eyes as I quickly returned to the house. To give myself comfort I said to ME, MYSELF AND I………..

“WELL, YOU WILL NEVER GARDEN AGAIN SO WHAT DOES IT MATTER? GET OVER IT!”

There has been A LOT of those RUDE AWAKENING MOMENTS for me lately.

It is a HARD REALITY TO SWALLOW because we still feel young in our heads, but the body cannot keep up.I now have MY MOTHER’s BODY of when she was older!Except she NEVER lost her HAIR like I have!I am not complaining just saying that all of a sudden you see yourself in the MIRROR and wonder when did THAT HAPPEN?

THIS IS MY MOTHERS BODY!NOT MINE!

Yes, I am still going through photos. This one is from around 2007 I’m guessing as I am wearing a sweatshirt MY SON brought back from SEMESTER AT SEA for me.We were decorating the CHRISTMAS TREE.So, in this photo we are about 47 years old. Before, the BLOG BEGAN!

SO, YES OVERALL RETIREMENT has been GOOD FOR HIM.He has stayed busy between FAMILY and FRIENDS who need his assistance.

He is NEVER HOME!

Loves to drive and run errands………

BETTY, MY DOG is with him 99% of the time.

Do you have a husband who is retired? How did you cope in that first year?

Any funny stories to share here in the comments?

I have to admit I thought it would be a bit different!

I think I have LESS contact with him now that he is HOME!

Before I got at least TWO phone calls a day and another call to announce his ARRIVAL TIME!

NOW.

Only a call if I have asked him to get some item for me and he has a question!

HE TURNED 66 on JANUARY 2, 2026.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY MONTH TO MY WONDERFUL ITALIAN/PAPA!!!

AND ALL YOU OTHER JANUARY PEOPLE!

I KNOW THERE ARE A FEW OF YOU OUT THERE!

NINETTA MY GORGEOUS COUSIN,CELESTE ONE OF MY OLDEST FRIENDS,JILL THE LANDLADY more on her further down and DEE MY DIVINE DEVOUT BLOG READER may you all CELEBRATE IN STYLE and HAVE A WONDERFUL YEAR!

MANY CARDS AND DRAWINGS FROM THE GRANDS!

I LOVE THIS PHOTO!

TUBING with THE GRANDCHILDREN.

BOWLING in BIG BEAR for NEW YEAR’S EVE!

WASHING UP AFTER DINNER with his NEW ARM COVERS

FROM HIS FIRST AND ONLY LANDLADY EVER!

When THE ITALIAN first arrived from ITALY he lived with the owners of our company, but the neighbor had space underneath her home in the BERKELEY HILLS that he could rent!THE LANDLADY as we called her back in the day rang the doorbell the other day and I was napping! In my mind it would have been the AMAZON person making a delivery so I did not jump off the bed.The ITALIAN heard the doorbell and answered it!He had NO IDEA WHO THEY WERE, but was making conversation and I too was straining to hear but couldn’t figure out who it was!Plus, I had just dozed off into NEVER NEVER LAND!

The BEAUTY of this story is YOU CAN NEVER BE TOO OLD TO STILL HAVE FUN!

LANDLADY has a BEAUTIFUL LAUGH and has ALWAYS HAD IT!

AS I TYPE THIS TODAY I REALIZE IT’s HER BIRTHDAY TODAY!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY JILL……………you are a REAL GEM and that DOCTOR KNEW IT!

When I was dating the ITALIAN and hanging out at his place this man you see here in the HORSE MASK donned a GORILLA SUIT to court THE LANDLADY!Maybe we can get her to tell us the STORY of WHY HE WORE A GORILLA SUIT in the comments?!!It must have been some kind of JOKE between the TWO OF THEM!I remember a man walking the path to her front door, in said gorilla suit as I sat outside reading!

I do not think I EVER HEARD THE REASON WHY…………….

BOTTOM LINE THEY ARE FUN PEOPLE AND MORE PEOPLE NEED TO BE LIKE THEM!

WE ALL NEED TO LAUGH MORE AND HAVE FUN!

When was the last time you dropped into a friend’s home to say HELLO?

JANUARY 2, 2026 the BIRTHDAY FEAST!

IN THE JOHN WAYNE ROOM BETTER KNOWN AS THE DUKE!

Here is a bit of TRIVIA for YA!John Wayne was called THE DUKE because as a child, his constant companion was an AIREDALE TERRIER named DUKE, and firefighters in his GLENDALE, CALIFORNIA neighborhood nicknamed him”LITTLE DUKE” since he was rarely seen without the dog, a name that stuck with him throughout his life.A name he preferred over his given name of MARION MORRISON.”

RIGHT TO LEFT…………..OUR SON, his newly ENGAGED WIFE TO BE,HER ADORABLE SON,THE BIRTHDAY BOY,ME,HER DIVINE DAUGHTER and OUR SWEET LOTTIE.

BE WELL, BE SAFE AND JUST TURN ALL THE BAD STUFF OFF FOR AWHILE IT’s BECOME TOO MUCH FOR ME TO COPE WITH.IT’s making me SO ANGRY which is not good for one’s HEALTH and we all know I have enough S&&& going on for ALL OF US!

I have NOTHING GOOD TO REPORT IN THAT DEPARTMENT SO NO UPDATES TODAY!

MAYBE NEXT BLOG I CAN SHARE but today let’s keep it JOYFUL!

My words for 2026 are MAGICAL THINKING!

THANK YOU FOR BEING HERE.

TO COMMENT OR YELL AT ME SCROLL DOWNWARDS………

THANK YOU!

So late reading this. But as you know I always love your posts. Some beautiful photos and memories. We both are very busy with our six grandchildren who live nearby. Collecting and delivering them to after school activities and minding the babies so mums can have a break. GG still plays a lot of tennis and I got to pilates and walk. Never enough hours. The Italian is a sweetheart. We both got good men x

    Hi Elizabeth

I can relate to your finding photos. I sorted out 190 boxes of papers, documents etc from my father’s office. I did it over 9 months spread out over 3 years. In every box I found photos I had never seen before. Now I have a ton of photos to put in albums (that seems to be my fate in life).
treasures, all! GP looks wonderful — perhaps you would lend him to me –I have several things that need fixing. My best wishes to you for the New Year. I look at my friends and wonder how they grew so old.

I understand. It seems like life actually kicks up a notch at retirement.
In a way it slows but for me it seems like the days are full.

How exciting, your family is growing!! More beautiful children to love…

My husband retired about 3 years ago and we have a bit of a “routine” that works for us. We have breakfast together, then an hour walk together with the dogs. After that we each have our own errands, appointments, etc.
Afternoon he goes into his man cave (the basement) to catch up on the news and sports online, while I read or play scrabble or watch garden shorts on YouTube.
We come together again at dinner time for a glass of wine, dinner prep and then finally, HE does the dishes!
Of course there are days that involve big garden or home projects and we tackle those together. All in all I love having him around, especially considering that he travelled so much for work throughout our marriage.
I think that you and GP are handling his retirement beautifully…he needs to be a busy bee and you encourage it!

    Hi, Contessa!
I so enjoy reading your blog and taking me away to a kind and lovely place instead of all the shade in the US lately. It’s heartbreaking to see our country be “lead” by such unkind and cruel chaos-generators at the top. This past week almost put it over the top but you know it can always be worse even if it doesn’t seem possible. We have a balmy 46 degree day here today except the wind is howling. I am anxiously awaiting a new garden season which is awhile away here in the Dakotas. But I have a sunporch full of blooming geraniums to tide me over. It’s 60 in there today. Have a space heater to keep them thawed when it gets to be cold freezing temps. They love it cool and it helps me cool off my hot head to go out there and deadhead. My hubby (a farmer) will never retire, I’m afraid. I’ve had to make my own joy as he is always off busy 4/7/365 and isn’t a date-night person either. Oh well, I’ve got good dog, kitty and pony companions…and three grown daughters and 4 grandkids who are part of my favorite era. Grammy is the best joy I’ve had and feel so blessed to have all of them within only a few hours travel. Please take care and continue to bring joy with your tales of life in California with the Italian. My old photo blog is gerberbaby1.wordpress.com if you need a bit of reading material.

        Hi, Contessa,

I was to a circus in a tent almost 50 years ago I think. It was magical but I was younger then and now, like you, I would be concerned about the comfort of the seating and also dealing with the crowds. I loved the circus but now with the concerns about animals being abused…especially the elephants…one is a bit more aware of the back story. I definitely am not a fan of the motorcycles in the iron ball routines that are so NOISY and an assault to the senses. I would love a change of scenery and don’t let HIM stop me getting it but he is all work and no play and as we know, that makes for a dull man. Like a leopard, one can not change his spots, even though I thought when I married him that I could!! Thanks for your advice and encouragement. Yes, I have thought about bringing the blog back especially since my only granddaughter is now 13 and is preferring the company of her peers to her Grammy. We are very close but there is only so much time in her day and those peers are very important…I understand that and encourage that but I still miss her. Have a brilliant day and we will both try to carry on in these days of so much darkness.

Happy New Year Contessa! And Happy Birthday month and retirement anniversary, Giampiero! I can’t believe it’s been a whole year. Retirement suits him. You are fortunate that he knows how to do so many things. I enjoyed hearing about the transitions there since he retired. My own husband will probably never retire. He works at home, but I don’t see him for most of the day. We enjoy our evenings together, and occasionally we have a date. As to the gardens, as you know, they are my domain. That’s why I held my breath when you were telling the story of G around your plants. If I need Don’s help, he is happy to pitch in. He is charge of blowing leaves and trimming with the weed eater. Everything else is on me, which is fine. I am thankful to have a passion. So happy about K’s engagement; I know you are, too. How fun for Charlotte to have instant siblings. May this new year bring you new delights, new interests, and a renewed spirit. Let’s chat soon,

Bob retired over 10 years ago and it was so hard for me to get used to the fact that he would be home during the day…. I didn’t like that he put the TV on when I like the house quiet but in 10 years I’ve gotten used to him being around! I still fly (very occasionally) so he gets a few days off, but we do like to travel so we were together a lot when we do travel!

Yes, I have noticed the price of food it’s crazy… I looked at a loaf of bread the other day and it was $8.99. I remember in fifth grade. They were explaining inflation and they said one day you would need a wheelbarrow of money to buy a loaf of bread…. I thought I think we’re almost there..

So glad that your son got engaged! She looks wonderful and I know that Lottie is excited to have companions

Happy New Year to you and the Italian. I do hope this year is a happy and healthy one .
My husband retired at 60 ( I was still working) but keeps busy with his cars , home jobs and some volunteering. It does take adjustment on both sides I found.
GP seems to be enjoying his retirement and it is important to keep busy. I feel your pain regarding your garden but sometimes we have to let it happen. Hopefully the banksia rose will recover -they are very hardy.
    Wonderful family photos.

Thank you so much for the birthday wish. You have perfectly described aging, as if they were my words. However, sorry you are feeling this way. At 65, your age, I was a different person. I recognize and relate to the hearts part in your energy level. Life changing for the good with growth ahead is a very different ride from life changing and stealing away choices.
Retirement for me and my husband was once again perfectly described above, with the exception, of help around the homestead. I have laughed so hard at the story of ‘tiding up the garden’. The realization that my yard was now under new management and I was demoted.
I can sum it all up with the absolutely pur- fect picture of Tigre. I’ll leave it to you to decipher the sentiment I believe is behind his expression; however,
appears new management is not appreciated. Betty, on the other hand, is handling change quite well or has jumped sides. I’m afraid she is forgetting you’re the mother and that’s your spot in the car. She’s having a great adventure with Papa.
Maybe this is the year we enjoy flower arrangements in our beautiful vases. Husbands can bring them to the door freshly cut from the well tended garden they are resurrecting and streamlining. Let’s do more of that and drink mint tea as we contemplate a new flower garden, for our arrangements, with all that cleared area appearing.
Loved the pictures of your beautiful family you have shared over the holidays. Love the blog. Yes times are changing all around. Peace to you in 2026 California friend.

MY GARDENER does not like plants TOUCHING!He would like to see THE DIRT!Or the neighbors yard for that matter!I had a double whammy two days ago when the neighbor had her gardener trim OUR rose that was growing into their yard.I had asked if it was a bother months ago and NO was the answer.WELL a 20 plus RAMBLING ROSE will be no more on their side.Lets hope we can bend toward our side.I will not LIVE LONG ENOUGH to see that NEW LOOK but it was just a RAMBLER not a continuous bloomer with FRAGRANCE GALORE!SO, I have gained more LIGHT into my side yard which is a WIN WIN!
LIFE GOES ON……….and YES to puttering with our vases which means I need to MAKE MORE table space!Loved our chit chat yesterday. You look BEAUTIFUL from the photos and so happy you ENJOYED YOUR BIRTHDAY!I am still chuckling about the birthday card story and CHARLIE doing her DUE DILIGENCE protecting HER BELOVED NANA!

    Ciao Bella,

What a lovely family you have! The grandkids are gorgeous. Hasn’t the Italian’s retirement gotten off to a cracking start? He looks very relaxed about the casa, and it’s nice for him to have Betty as his shadow, saves you having to troop around after him as he busies himself 🙂

Yes, having a retired husband underfoot comes with plenty of good but requires having to “let go” of some things. Mine also needs to be busy so has pretty much taken over the cooking and cleaning, which he undertakes with the zeal of a convert. Sure, there might be some casualties about the place but if you just close your eyes and take a deep breath, it’s easier to remember that having such enthusiasm coming from the bubby is better than the opposite!

Retirement looks great on him. Retiring and “doing nothing” makes us old before our time, so I’m glad he’s busy finding things he likes to do. Both of my husbands died before that day came, and while I’ve reached that age, I want to stay active and engaged, so I’m researching what happened to a girlfriend of mine. In the late 70’s, she was staying with me, and when she called home, she learned her husband had been shot. I put her on a plane to Miami, and that’s the last time I heard from either of them. I can’t help but think there’s another book there somewhere. LOL! They had a story to tell before that day!

Take care of yourself and your energy, sweet friend. Love, Brenda

    Hi Elizabeth,
I always enjoy your entertaining blogs.
You and your Italian are adorable. It’s wonderful that he enjoys keeping engaged in his craft. Likes helping others, I so relate to that. He is a guy with a big heart. Your hubs always has a joyful smile on his face. Always by your side, what more can you ask for.
You have a great family. Yay your son is engaged, very exciting. She is a beautiful lady, inside is what counts.
My Bear and I had our own business forever and we were not working in the same office. I was on the road everyday.
Living together in total retirement over all we do very well. It’s give and take, we are compatible 99 % of the time.
He is my best friend. Our personalities are so opposite. I’m super friendly (my friends and hubs says) Bear is more reserved. A Brit, me German, French, and Italian. More Italian I think.
I’m starting to read “Let Them” by Mel Robbin’s. Think it’s going to be a good read. My “Hope” book by one of my hero’s Jane Goodall sits on my bedroom bed waiting to be picked up again.
The new year is starting hard in our family. One terminal, back in the hospital, it’s HARD and heart wrenching. The other two dear friends in hospital too, one just released to a care facility. I think highly of both of them.
The ICE incident this week has me outraged this week. I read so much about Renee Nicole Good, mother of three and so much more about her. Such a good person. To think the 34 Felon called her, “a domestic terrorists and his side kicks jumping on his band wagon. I’m it sickens me.
    What in the earth!!!
Excuse my vent to start the new year.
Take care and stay safe out there.
    Hope you are feeling ok.

KATHERINE, I too have started HOPE but put it down!In fact I am reading THREE books at once which I NEVER DO!I can highly recommend the books written by DIANE KEATON!She wrote three books about her life which I can relate too as she grew up in Southern California close to where I spent sometime! She shares her heart throbs who were BIG TIME ACTORS, but nothing ever came of it.She has a bit of a sad story but really worth reading!
I am so sorry you have family on the brink of their life.It is VERY DIFFICULT to see.Just keep showing up for them as long as you can.
Don’t get me STARTED with the STATE of our STATES!He is not gaining ANY VOTES anywhere.Thank You for your card and emails…………….I stepped away from the computer and just enjoyed my TREE!Today we take it down always makes me sad!

Oh how delightful. I wish he was my handyman. He would have the best time with Bob who is also kinda retired. Congratulations on your son’s engagement and you adding two grandkids to the family. Great fun. Oh, my heart would ache with a downed plant. But it looks like you’re having lots of fun. Bob is having a wonderful time editing my Youtube videos, and being my manager etc. We’re having fun together.

Oh the warmth and love pours out of your blog ,
I can relate to all you say about men and gardening, for years hubby was banished from touching, trimming my various gardens unless I was beside him giving directions , never moving an inch away.
In retirement which has gone on for so many years, don’t know how that happened ! Calvin like your hubby is a physical person always making , altering doing things and loves sailing, sport etc. he has gradually been reduced because of health issues to supermarket shopping with me ,to stop helpful suggestions he has his own shopping list controlling coffee, yoghurt, cleaning washin* things and wine, milk so we don’t clash too much. A woman who overheard us a few times came up and said our conversation around the aisles was hilarious ?! Can’t think why? washing up, vacuuming he has taken over can’t complain there so we roll along into the ‘ crumblie’ stage of life. Luv and hugs xx

I love your stories!! Such a great idea having him be the Handyman oh my gosh I wish she lived in my neighborhood. Just one thing I would suggest don’t let him massacre your plants. It will break your heart and make you sick. Just beg him to please let you help him trim properly and not take out things you love and not take a hatchet job to a beautiful rose vine. Your garden is your soul, and he can be gentle and conservative in his trimming. Just because there are a few branches of dead rosemary doesn’t mean the plant is dead. You could just trim off the dead branches and it would come right back.I know how much he cares about you and if you tell him how much you care about those plants, he’ll respect that I just know it.

Loved, loved this post. The word retirement is on my mind (yet also I word that has negative vibes for me?!) So I loved reading about how his first year has been and that it’s been a smooth transition. My husband (older and retired for some time, but I am old, too!) reminds me of your Italian, can do anything, does all the yardwork, which is major in FL, and also the resident chef–I am so lucky.

The year of magical thinking is the perfect mantra for 2026, and we all need to do it. Loved the photos of your adorable family AND pets. Sending love and magical thoughts your way… XO

Loved this Elizabeth. My husband sold his company at age 59. He is now 85 (I’m 79).
Retirement changes as you get older. For a long time he was busy busy. Running every morning with his buddies, golf twice a week, Rotary once a week and even more when he was a district governor of rotary in Houston.

Then we had a summer mountain house…and he hiked once a week with a men’s group. Was on this board and that. Constantly on the go.

Now ….sold the mountain house, and have moved to a new town. He misses his buddies..He does volunteer two mornings a week otherwise he is bored silly and wants to go with me on every errand…or asks when will you be back?…constantly Don’t get me wrong I love him dearly but even more when he had more to do..

    Sorry about the rant….Janey

Still think you should write a BOOK! There is ALWAYS something new to learn from YOU! Like those ARM COVERS! LOVE THEM! I have NEVER heard of them! I keep having to wash my tops and cardigans daily because of all the splatters and wetness that happens while washing up in the kitchen. This would solve the EXTRA laundering!
Your Sweet Italian is definitely enjoying his retirement! The one common thing I keep hearing about PEOPLE who are in their late 80’s and 90’s is that they keep their hands and minds BUSY DAILY and have A LOT of social interactions. Your PAPA has got the RIGHT IDEA!
Beautiful to see that You are looking GREAT and enjoying a lot of quality family time, too! Tigre is looking more and more like Theodorable!
You have a lot of Wonderful people/ friends celebrating their Birthdays this month – I, too, am one of them. No one escapes the aging process, Lol.

Arm Covers!!! I need some. One reason I always wear sleeveless clothes while puttering around the house is because I hate getting my sleeves wet.

Now that we’re back in Santa Barbara after taking care of my mother in Camarillo for 16 years (she died in August at 104 years old) my husband is back “in his garage” and I LOVE it. He’s 80 years old (I never thought I’d be in bed with an octogenarian!) and he has slowed down a little. I retired first and when he retired soon after, I thought “Oh no, how is this going to work?” It did and we love it!

I loved this post today and your photos, as always.

My OH has been self-employed for well over 30 years so I’m used to having him around. He’s become a great cook and maker of pickles, jams and chutneys. He has taken far more interest in gardening in the past 23 years since we moved here. BUT I would never trust him with a saw or secateurs in the garden without checking out what he was attacking. Nor would he dare remove any plant without my specific say so. All my plants have history, like your white rosemary.

He is also an artist and has far more time to paint in retirement so that’s a win!

He’s taking care of me right now while my left arm is plastered after I broke my wrist on 17th December. I owe him big time!

Im sure your Italian looks after his Contessa too. He has such a kind face. You chose well!
