A RENTAL SHOTGUN HOUSE!

June 15, 2023 74 Comments

WE all have made friends from BLOGS and SOCIAL MEDIA who we have yet to meet face to face but in my case I am lucky to say I have met DEB MILNES.

A lovely woman who found her true SCOTSMAN at a dinner party.

I believe it was a second marriage for her and HE WAS A BACHELOR!

And lucky me I got to meet both of them at a dinner party in Laguna Beach,California years ago at THE FRENCH BASKETEER’s HOME!

It was as if we had known each other for years!

As I recall that night we both did not want the night to end.

Meet DEB and see what she has done to a 138 year old house!

1.Who are you?Where did you grow up and who do you live with now?

Hello, I am Deborah (Deb). I was born in Montana, but was raised 40 miles north of Seattle. If you’ve ever heard of Chrissy Teagan, watched HGTV’s ‘Unsellables’ or read Kristin Hannah’s book ‘Firefly Lane’ (also a Netflix series), you have have heard or seen slivers of my quintessential home town of Snohomish.

2.I remember you had a BLOG YEARS AGO……….name?
I started blogging around 2006, the same time as so many talented men

and women. Blogging was unchartered territory and I forged friendships because of that unorthodox medium that still are strong today. How can you possibly be friends with someone you never met? We all proved you can. My blog was Dumbwittellher and I blogged about anything that stirred me. I miss it, but I ran out of steam after our move to Scotland. There was too much shortbread to eat and castles to see when I wasn’t at my job.

3.What is your NEW VENTURE? WHY did you move from CALIFORNIA to LOUISIANA?

Currently we are working on a 4100 sq. ft. retired nursing home. Perhaps buying this project has it’s own hidden message?

My husband of 22 years and I tend to have wheels on our feet and people have given up on asking for our address. We currently call New Orleans home. 4 years here under our belts and still going. We moved here from San Diego out of necessity. Graham’s career dictates where we typically move and it’s unpredictable. You either fight it or you ride with the wave. Now most contractors and their significant others tend to rarely buy a house where they are currently working. You never know when you have to ‘pull up shop’ and find the next contract. We take the risk of buying a
house, living in it and spend our down time remodeling it. We caught on years ago that the one way to survive the ups and downs of real estate is to invest in a property and to invest in yourself. Our M.O. is to not buy a house that’s been remodeled (I don’t love buying someone else’s design choices) because doing that ourselves is not only a rewarding challenge but our chances are better for coming out ahead when selling.

4.How did you become interested in Interior Design? How did you learn it ALL?

You know how some were born to dance, or play the drums? I was born loving design, fashion and architecture. My parents had good taste, and their home was always evolving and I got bit by that bug. I wanted to get an education in architecture but life didn’t take me down that path so I studied every magazine or book I could afford (mind you, this was way before the perks of searching the web),

5.Please tell us more about your NEW VENTURE!

A) Location to downtown New Orleans
Our current home is close to the action. Downtown New Orleans is

called the Central Business District and we are just 16 minutes by car. Most are familiar with the French Quarter & we are located just a 11 mile ride away.

B) Walking distance?
Our home is too far to walk for most to the business district, or the

Garden District, but the French Quarter is only a 20 minute walk. In the peek of muggy summer, it might be a longer stroll. We are 15 minutes walk to Frenchman Street.

6.How easy is it to get an UBER? Very easy to Uber anywhere.

C) Cost of staying in your SHOTGUN HOUSE?
Like most rentals, the cost fluctuates with demand as determined by Airbnb. The ‘Redemptory’ sleeps 6 and starts at $350. per night with a two night minimum. I’m currently working on a website for people to contact me easily if they wish to book a night for less than 6 adults.

D) Food STOPS for dinner and a good coffee in town?
New Orleans is a trap for eating too well. Come willing to let down

your diet guard for your stay and imbibe in all this great town has to offer. Since there’s not enough time to list them all, in my humble opinion these are show-stoppers –

* Mosquito Supper Club

* Saint Germain
* N-7
* Bywater American Bistro
* Paladar 511
* Alma’s (for breakfast and lunch)
I think if it’s your first visit to New Orleans, it’s a must to dine at one of the three – Commander’s Palace, Brennan’s, Antoine’s, or Gallitore’s, if anything for history sake and people watching.

Coffee – I am not a coffee drinker (and heaven knows I have tried) but I am surrounded by those that are.Taking my daughter Emily’s lead, I would suggest Pond Coffee, Petite Clouet, Mammoth Coffee (soon to be in the Bywater neighborhood), Saint Coffee, and Ayu Bakehouse in the Marigny.

E) SHOPPING STREETS?
Most definitely Magazine Street.

F) ANTIQUE ZONE?
The French Quarter has high-end antique shops but there are a few dotted around the city that I love to haunt.
DOP Antiques
Merchant House
Magazine Antique Mall
Mac Maison Antiques

G) Best Cocktails:

Bar Marilou

Peacock Room

Peycahuds Bar in the Hotel Maison De Ville – brimming with history, the property housed the creator of New Orleans signature Sazarac cocktail, Antoine Peychaud, and Tennessee Williams wrote his masterpiece, A Streetcar Named Desire, while staying here.

St. Pat’s Irish Coffeehouse
Tiki Tok (who doesn’t like a drinking out of a banana?)
Arnaud’s French 75 Bar
Hermes Bar – Antoines Restaurant
Best bartenders and budget friendly cocktails – Molly’s at the Market Best Frozen Irish Coffee – Erin Rose

6. FAVORITE PLACE FOR JAZZ MUSIC?

On Frenchman Street – The Spotted Cat Bamboula’s
D.B.A.

The Mason
Fritzel’s European Jazz Pub
Palm Court (for traditional jazz in a traditional setting) The Maple Leaf Bar – Uptown area

7.FAVORITE TOURISTY THING TO DO? Carousel Bar Hotel Monteleone Preservation Hall for Jazz Ghost/Cemetery Tours

Cycling Tour
Oak Alley Plantation Tour

8.RIVER CRUISES?

Steamboat Natchez VIP Jazz Dinner Cruise Airboat Adventures Swamp Tours

9.How many MORE HOUSES are in your FUTURE?
Perhaps two. I was told this week however that our days of a complicated and long remodel are coming to an end. The Mr. is finally getting worn out! I swear he’s said this before.

10.Will you ever return to SCOTLAND your husbands homeland?
Graham searches for houses online (what feels like weekly) in his hometown of Aberdeen. I think it’s only fair for him to get the chance to spend more time with his siblings and family before we get to the point that we must be settled for good. The clock is ticking.

11.NOW A FEW DETAILS ABOUT YOU!
I’m really nobody, but I’m everybody. A middle-class upbringing by parents who stayed married. Mom worked at a local family run clothing store, and dad was the music director at our towns one High School.

Life was very

‘Leave it to Beaver’. I was Beav infused with a bit of naughty Eddy. I was the elementary kid who spent their fair share of time in the corner at school for talking too much, and the High Schooler that was snickered at for wearing clothes that weren’t quite mainstream yet. Think knickers, gaucho pants, Swedish clogs and skorts and my clothes were handmade by Singer and my mom. I have always had the desire to not be main stream. I am the one who will hold the door open for you. I’m too sensitive and I read too much into most things. Music moves me and design in all forms drive me. I have always related to the under-dog. I rarely go shopping in a store, unless it’s for bedding plants.

Somewhere along the path through adulthood I developed social anxiety. I had little to add to a conversation & low self-esteem. The esteem part is a another DIY project. Because we’ve had to move many times since my mid 40’s, I have been forced to be in many new situations & having to put myself out there. I now give credit to those years of being uncomfortable to turning that part of me around. I must also give credit where credit is do and that’s marrying Graham in 2001. We met at a Christmas party in Ballard, WA, we were both with dates. At 42, I asked Graham out. A bold move for this ‘boomer’.

My proudest achievement is my four adult children, two daughter’s and two sons. They are PNW people through and through. We have been blessed with 7 grandchildren and that number could rise. Matt, Marc, Kate and Emily are all insanely creative, & hilarious; they an carry a conversation with a lamp post, and above all, they are kind people.

Since 2016, we have remodeled 5 houses and we are on our 6th. Numbers five and six are considered doubles, so basically it’s designing two houses. We live where we are remodeling and that to be honest, is not easy & never glamorous. That’s why you never get an invite to pop over or a pic of our dining room table setting. My dining room is currently filled with paint cans. I love people, but I struggle with those that cannot be genuine. Perfection is unachievable. I have to laugh at myself and I need to accept that there is more to to each of us than what’s captured in a lovely photo. Our frailties are what make us human and it makes us relatable. Since I was 40, the phrase, ‘walk a mile in my shoes’ plays repeat in my mind when I get frustrated with behaviors that I can’t understand.

Last is it me or has anyone else noticed that post COVID,so many of us are unable to fully read a few paragraphs?I promise, there won’t be a test after reading this!

I tend to be drawn to an orange/red or a berry.

Elizabeth aka The Vintage Contessa. This is an excellent interview with Deborah. It brought back memories of blogging in the early days and the wonderful community that emerged from those days.

I feel that Deborah and Graham’s projects get better and better with each renovation. Such a pair of talented individuals who are unique and put a piece of their heart in each project. If only they had time to have their own HGTV show!!

Like you possess Elizabeth, I feel style is in the genes and is a gift one is born with and Deb and you were at the front of the line when God was handing out this gift.
Keep us your great work and sense of humour.

Late to the party here, but loved meeting you, Deb. Like you, I love color and whimsy, in my home and when I dress. Your interior design aesthetic is so charming…I could move right in! And thank you for your openness about your social anxiety…like you, I’m basically very friendly but tend to be shy and reserved, especially in large groups. Kudos to you for plowing through your shyness and creating a beautiful, inspiring destination for your lucky guests!
I lived in Laguna Beach for nearly 30 years…now I’m wondering if our paths may have ever crossed??
I’ve only been to Nola once, about 20 years ago, and had a blast. Jazz at Snug Harbor and beignets at Cafe du Monde…it was an unforgettable trip. If I ever get back, your beautiful inn would top my list for lodging.
Many thanks, Elizabeth, for the introduction to Deb!
    xx

Hello Stephanie, thank you for taking the time to comment. Graham & I sincerely appreciate your compliments. My biggest fear is failure to create a space that doesn’t evoke feeling or is just a bit less cookie cutter.

I’d like to think we’ve crossed paths at some point. You were so fortunate to call Laguna Beach home for so long. I thought it was magical. I dreamt of being a surfer!! ? I love that you hung out at Snug Harbor. Another super spot for music. Perhaps one day we will meet & I loved knowing a bit about you too! Keep well. ?

This was a great post, Elizabeth. I follow Deb on Instagram and while I’ve been aware that they’re relatively new to New Orleans and they’ve been restoring a house there, most of the rest of the interview is new to me. It’s always fun to learn more about people we’re drawn to. I, too, love to restore homes, usually tough projects like the three-story, 6,400 sq ft home I lived in for decades… that was an ongoing project… and the 22 ft by 22 ft “Little House” in the Texas Hill Country. Both were labors of love. xoxox, Brenda

What an adventure!! Loved ‘meeting’ Deb (also my name, Deborah–I think it was v. popular back in that time, we are the same vintage : ) And my mother made all my prom dresses, summer dresses, a mother-daughter combo, even down-filled ski mittens in leather–AND sewed most of my Barbie clothes, including suits and pillbox hats : ) I am sorry to admit I didn’t inherit the sewing gene–my college graduation gift was a Singer and I never once used it, but moved it every time we did thinking I would. (It took me five times in Home Ec to put a zipper in a lined skirt.) Anyway… just loved this bird’s eye view into the shotgun project (ADORE the colors and decor) and all the priceless tips on where to go… maybe one day we will visit… what a fantastic place to stay!! I forwarded this post to my newly married daughter who has been to your city… a great spot for their couple friends from different parts of the country to meet (and party… and maybe the ghost would reappear for cocktails : ) Have reread this post, it was so chock full of eye candy and info… a wonderful interviewee and interviewer!! Cheers!!!

Hi Deborah, and yes…we are a certain vintage with this name ( : I loved reading about all the great things your mother made you, truly impressive. I too didn’t inherit much of that gene. I made things out of necessity (like the curtain under the kitchen sink, etc.) and other projects like that but it doesn’t compare to putting in a zipper! I couldn’t either. I can’t thank you enough for your very kind compliment and we truly appreciate anyone sharing about this new venture. We completed another double-style home here during Covid. We finished up the rental and got our license & then bam, Covid hit. Sold it all lock stock and barrel and it lives on as a holiday rental. Well, I for one hope the ghost shows up for a wee dram one day. He/she was a tad feisty at first but their last task was to vacuum the back of the house which I greatly appreciated despite the fact we have no carpeting. You take care and thanks again!

Hi Elizabeth, I know I can always count on you. Thank you friend, and we both appreciate you being a champion to support us all these years. I’m so glad that the Aberdeen flat was your favorite. Gosh that was a fun challenge. Those were the days you could buy vintage easily and arrange shipping via a truck without breaking the bank. Oh my, the day the men showed up at the front door, looked up those long front stairs to the flat knowing they had to bring up a 48″ stove. Stay tuned…perhaps another Scottish project one day before we give up the ghost. Have a super week!

      Hi Ellie,
Thank you for reading and I know I’d get a long with anyone who wanted to frame a vintage Antoine’s menu and own one of the cookbooks. If the author was Roy Guste, he was part of the Antoine dynasty. He passed during Covid but we had the great fortune of meeting him and buying the rights to have one of his images blown up for a huge mural in our last house here in New Orleans. He loved photography and really captured incredible images. I recently met his cousin and it’s really incredible that the family still owns the restaurant today. It’s so nice to be able to dream of traveling, I hear you. I long to travel again. You take care and so nice to ‘meet you’!

Hi Deb? from a Gulf Coast neighbor! New Orleans is special and eclectic. You captured her well with your design of the shotgun house.
Yes, I wondered if she was haunted. So many of the homes there leaning toward the white, high Belgium look now. Tara Shaw I’m certain you know well.
Love the entrance with lettering and shutters; also, that musical artistic light in kitchen. Now that screams NOLA. Would be fun to stay there as it offers the New Orleans vibe, for sure.

Hi Neighbor Dee! Thanks for your very kind message. I do love an all white aesthetic (aka Leanne Ford) but every time I think I’ll make that happen, a house speaks to me in color. Yes about Tara Shaw! I’m sure glad you liked dining room light. I scoured Ebay for instruments and husband Graham volunteered to make a light happen. I am thrilled you appreciate the shutters. Those were a work of love and insanity scraping, filling and re-storing them so they could outlive me. Thinking of you as we get further along in hurricane season. I hope it’s a quiet year for us all! Take care : )

Fun interview Elizabeth. Sounds like Deb and Graham have a lot of energy and creativity. I especially loved the wall and floor colors in the laundry/bathroom and also the blue bedroom with the gold bedspread. Looks like the perfect place to stay and a great get-a-way spot. Thanks ladies!!! Maggie

Hello Maggie, and thank you for your super compliment. I think Graham and I have an unspoken competition going as to whose energy will not give-out first! He works 50 hours a week at his desk and then does all these crazy tasks. I have the luxury of taking a break when a Dr. Pepper is needed. I’m really glad to know you loved the wall and floor colors of that first bathroom. That was a leap of faith and so your comment makes my week. You take care and all my best to you!

What a lovely surprise to wake up this morning and see a new blog post … and DEB! If she’s not the loveliest person on Instagram I don’ know who is … what a joy it is to follow her (and Graham’s) adventures in decorating. And color. Deb’s use of color is like no other and her taste and style so uniquely fabulous. Why isn’t the Redemtory in a magazine? And how did it get that name? I think Deb and Julie Reed (rest in peace) would have been besties … I wonder if they ever met during their New Orleans years. By the way, I was stunned to hear it’s been 4 years (already!) since the move to NOLA. I’ve never been … sort of embarrassing. Deb’s IG feed and stories push it further and further up my must-do list. Now I know where to stay … and where to borrow a cup of sugar. Wonderful post, Contessa … you’ve made my day! xo

Juliet, how do I express my gratitude enough for all your kind comments? I may not be able to get my head through the door in the morning!! Don’t be embarrassed you’ve never been to this city. I was 60 the first time I visited. It was such a shock to the system and I loved it unconditionally. I would have been over the moon to have met Julia. I bought her book, The House on First Street, right before we knew we were moving here. I loved it and I adored her. The name…well…I was trying to be cheeky and with a unique name. I found so many wonderful antique religious pieces on Etsy from France and I thought of the rental as a repreive from the occasional naughtiness in the French Quarter. I admit, I have a strange sense of humor. BTW, you can borrow a cup of sugar from me any time!! I’d love to meet you. Happy Sunday to you : )

Wow what a fun interview with your friend Deb! I can see why you you connected as kindred spirits. Elizabeth has that unique gift of bringing people together and always knows the most interesting people. Deb’s latest project in New Orleans is amazing – I want to enlarge each of the pics and take in all the details. I fell in love with New Orleans about 10 years ago when we celebrated my husband’s 60th there with dear friends. It is truly a magical city that one must absolutely experience at least once! The music, the food, the people all blend to make it unforgettable. Seeing your property makes me want to plan another trip soon!
I was a huge Anne Rice fan for many years and New Orleans came alive in her writing and always fascinated me. Thank you Elizabeth sharing Deb with us!
Definitely following her account and who knows maybe we will meet in person when we visit next!

      Hi Michele,
Thank you for your kind compliments. Feedback is so appreciated and it tickles me to no end knowing that anyone likes what we’ve done. I think people either love New Orleans or don’t and I’m glad you had a fun experience here. A great place to come to celebrate a milestone like you did for your husband. If you visit one day, I’d love meet you. Elizabeth is the best, and I’m so grateful for her!

What a wonderful woman to feature, LA CONTESSA. Deb, I appreciate your openness and sharing honest words in your answers. This: “I love people, but I struggle with those that cannot be genuine. Perfection is unachievable.” YES, yes, yES. So true. The house is gorgeous. I love all the color. The chair in the bathroom was also a real stand out for me, too. Very interesting combination–bathing and reading/relaxing. Oh, and the trumpet on the front door! Charming!!I love NOLA and would like to return someday. I’ll have to round up five others to join me.

Hi Lisa, so nice to ‘meet you’. Thank you for your lovely comment. I currently am working on a website so if you are traveling with fewer than 6 and don’t need all that space, you can contact me with dates and I can adjust that price but you’ll still have the entire home to yourselves. It’s a long story but the city has a temporary pull in July of everyone’s STR licenses to re-work a system that was broken. That’s why the B&B license but I’d prefer to allow people to have the luxury of the entire space to themselves. I hope that makes sense? I am so glad you liked that crazy chair/bathroom situation. It was the English granny in me!! My dad was a band director so I HAD to have an instrument on the front door. He used to do that at Christmas but here you can get away with about anything! Have a wonderful weekend, Lisa and take care!

Wow, Contessa! What a fun and fabulous post! I loved reading about Deb and can relate to her; she is someone with whom I could be friends. Singer and I made all of my clothing in high school. I knew I was “different” and didn’t fit in to any one group. I later learned to wear this as a badge of honor. “Different is good,” as the old commercial said. In my earlier life, I restored houses with my then-husband. We would find a house that looked like something out of “The Munsters,” from which the average person would run, screaming, due to vines growing on it, broken windows, caved-in ceilings, etc. We did these while both working full-time jobs. The newest house we worked on was built in the 1920s. It is grueling work, but in the rewards department, has no equal. I was proud to be able to give new life to an old home that needed us. I, too, prefer people to be genuine, so that is yet another thing to like about Deb. Now, as to the house, I am a bit confused: the old nursing home is next door to the shotgun, right? And that is where Deb and Graham live? And I have never seen a shotgun with a hallway! What a nice bonus to not have someone walking through your bedroom on the way to the back of the house. That bathroom is fabulous! I am going to guess that it’s in the former location of the kitchen, as that used to be on the back of these houses, right? And is there more than one bathroom? I love all of your design and décor choices, Deb. You have returned this amazing house to its former glory and then some. Seeing this featured on the Contessa’s blog is enough to make me want to return to New Orleans and stay in this beautiful place. Very best wishes to Deb and Graham in their pursuits. And, thank you, again, Contessa, for keeping us entertained with your creative features. There is never a dull moment with The Vintage Contessa!

Hi Judith, Can you please just move here to N.O. so we can be BFF’s? Crazy how much in common and you sound like you and your ex had mad remodeling skills and vision. Not for the faint of heart. Plus, you wore handmade clothes like I did!! Now that would be so chic. Thank you so, so much for your super comments and ones like these truly do fuel us to keep going. You know what it’s like, not always fun. Those were good questions about the house. It’s a double-shotgun house. At some point the dividing wall was taken down but Graham got that back up so it can live on as two separate homes again. Yes..to have a hallway (and there of course is one on each side) is everything here. We’re not sure where the original kitchen was? There wasn’t one on the side of the house your’e seeing here when we bought it. We do believe that originally there were two houses on this lot (one behind the other) and they combined the two. You can see the 2 different rooflines from the attic. The bathroom with the W/D only had a sink in it. We took part of the first bedroom to be able to add a shower/W&D area to that darn small space. The house was haunted when we first moved in but we’ve not experienced anything 18 months. I think she/he felt at peace at last and moved on. You’re so right about Elizabeth, never a dull moment and we all love her for that don’t we? Oh to live in her magnificent home!! Happy weekend to you and thanks again : )

I can only repeat your last sentence ‘it’s a well lived life” and this restlessness, always trying new things, obviously keeps her young. Looks much younger despite the many non-stop renovations and her huge family. A tough hard-working woman. Hands up. She has an interesting taste in interiors and she makes a lot of little Drama decorating is her thing too, but you still can’t be beat. I like the dark colors in her house and the eclectic interior. New Orleans is still on my bucket list, but it’s getting harder and harder to see. (And Brad Pitt is no longer there either). You are both out of the mainstream and I like that kind of people even though they are often difficult. Your hubbies will know. Please don’t take anything written too seriously.

It was wonderful to catch up with you. When we spoke I told you the story of a memory I had a month ago. You and I , 19 years old. Feeling like adults sipping white wine at your Mom’s home. I can’t recall whether you lived in Newport Beach or La Jolla. I was so happy to spend time with you since you moved away from Northern California. For an appetizer we had apples and sliced cheese. I never had that in combination before and with the white wine it was delicious!! I think of you, my friend, every time I serve apples with cheese. It was fun reminiscing… remember our shopping spree in Italy on our European bus trip… a harbinger of the fun times ahead for you there. I am honored that I was there at the beginning. Hello Contessa,
Thank you for your interview and story about your friend, Deb Milnes currently in New Orleans.
What fun aesthetics in her home and precious tips for so many treats in a place I’ve wanted to visit for many years. I may have to plan a trip to New Orleans based on all this great information.

I used to read Anne Rice and so miss her presence on Facebook. Beyond all her interesting novels, Anne Rice really engaged with her Readers–young and old. New Orleans will host a memorial for Anne Rice in the next 12 months and I might consider trying to attend that huge gathering.

I hope you are healing and handling all your health challenges as well as enjoying your chateau and Dear Ones. I so appreciate your energy to keep going with sharing your expansive views of a beautiful world. You inspire me and others.

Omg. Just rushed thru reading this. Started taking notes but quickly realized that EVERY WORD is worth reading again and committing to memory. Will FOR SURE will be taking the shopping recommendations to heart and will be hitting up all the antique stores just so I can soak it all in.

Yes, family still in NOLA. My daughter is attending nursing school there, living w one of my sisters. I realized I’ve been back 3 times since August 2022 so definitely looks like I’ll be able to explore all the cool places very soon. SO EXCITED!

I was born and raised in NOLA. Moved to Southern California in 1998 where I still reside w my husband (Todd), 2 young adult daughters (Abby and Claire), and Boston Terrier (NOLA).

As inspiring and interesting as the remodeling houses aspect is, hearing about Deb’s personality and life’s journey is resonating most w me. Can relate to being socially reserved but quite expressive and engaged w authentic people.

Ok. First round of gushing done. Off to reread every word again and to study all the photos of the architecture and design choices!!!
