AGELESS STYLE with Nena Ivon

April 29, 2022 71 Comments

NENA IVON INTRO
Staying with one company for one’s entire career is very unusual, but that is exactly what I did…I started my career at Saks Fifth Avenue, Chicago while still in high school, i was the youngest employee hired by the company, and spent the next 53 years, at the time the longest tenured employee, with the company as fashion and special events director. In that position I worked with 200 fashion designers (including…Adolfo, Bill Blass, Geoffrey Beene, Bonnie Cashin, Normal Norell, Pauline Trigère, Oscar de la Renta, Carolina Herrera, Carolyne Roehm, to name just a few), lifestyle experts and produced thousands of fashion shows and special events. During my time at Saks I also taught fashion courses at various Chicago colleges, most recently in the Fashion Studies Department at Columbia College Chicago. I was very fortunate to receive many awards, the City of Chicago proclaimed a day in my honor, and I chaired numerous charity galas, have been involved on many not-for-profit boards most recently as president of the Costume Council of the Chicago History Museum. I currently host monthly nenasnotes The Fashion Book and Film Clubs and a weekly series of nenasnotes The Fashion Master Class. In addition, I write for the nenasnotes blog and do free lance writing and fashion lecturing.
THE FASHION BOOK AND FILM CLUBS
and
   THE FASHION MASTER CLASS
I began the monthly nenasnotes The Fashion Book Club in 2019, and am pleased to say, many of the authors have joined me in conversation over the past 4+ years. The events were held in a private club, in person with champagne in hand, prior to the pandemic when they became virtual. Taking them virtual has allowed me to welcome attendees, who are recommended by current members, from all over the States. I started the nenasnotes The Fashion Film Club in March of 2020, the Tuesday of the week we went into lockdown….obviously went virtual month two! In January 2021 I started a weekly nenasnotes The Fashion Master Class…we are now in series 4 with a 16 week series 5 beginning in May.
I  have spent a lifetime studying the fascinating world of fashion and I like nothing more than sharing that knowledge and experiences.

I planned the budgets, booked the models, worked directly with the designers to plan their visits, choose the appropriate organization to benefit from the shows…etc.

I was very fortunate to receive many awards, the City of Chicago proclaimed a day in my honor,

and I co- chaired numerous charity galas.

I have been involved on many not-for-profit boards

most recently as president of the Costume Council of the Chicago History Museum.

CAN YOU SHARE YOUR FAVORITE LIPSTICK COLOR AND BRAND?
RIMMEL from Walgreen in bright clear red, they have several to chose from.
I like it because it has a sealer and stays put all day…perfect for mask wearing and cheerful for all my Zoom meetings!
For a splurge I go to Chanel in Coco Red!
I don’t use a lip liner they bleed on me…who knew!
  Carolina Herrera
What was your ensemble in your 50’s for work?
Favorite colors together?
We had a very strict dress code…black, brown, grey or navy, dresses or skirt suits (no slacks), you could wear a white blouse no other color and no pattern.  Heels, of course, and nude leg.  I chose black as my “uniform” and it still is.  Now, usually a black turtleneck and either slacks or skirt, I team them with bold color or print jackets and often an interesting black leather jacket, not a moto.
Favorite colors together?
I like and wear most colors and feel everyone can with a makeup adjustment.
It depends more on the cut and style of a piece rather than a particular colors.
What accessories do you find work BEST for you?
Bold statement necklaces and brooches, Victorian jet in necklaces, pins, earrings, gold chains with gold hoop earrings, my signature pieces are diamond studs and a very sentimental charm bracelet with heirloom charms!
If money was NO OBJECT which handbag would you carry now or in the past?
Can you tell us WHY?
I’m very funny about handbags, I don’t like changing them, so my go to is a vintage black quilted Chanel.
Give us a brief description of your office at Saks Fifth Avenue.
For example rolling rods, photos, samples etc.
Rolling racks in my office, not usually, lots of autographed photos from the designers I have worked with (I can count around 200 designers, lifestyle experts, authors, cosmetic mavens….etc. that I have done events with), the many awards I received over the years, a collection of miniature perfume bottles from all the launches we did!  Lots of other photos, of course, a desk and a computer cabinet. It was set up like a sitting room.  All my “things” are in the Nena Ivon Archives at Columbia College Chicago, including a vast amount of “paper” from events.

How can WE JOIN THE BLOG AND PLEASE TELL US YOUR SOCIAL MEDIA SOURCES?
What kind of EMOTIONS did you have leaving SAKS after 53 years?
I can only IMAGINE!!!
Actually, I was absolutely fine!  My retirement had been planned for six months and it was time to get on with the rest of my life.  I’m not a creature of change, obviously, but it was time.  All my former models, over 50 of them, threw a fabulous retirement/reunion party at our landmark hotel The Palmer House…it was THE best and the Store had a very soignée party the night before I closed my office door for the last time.  It was a perfect ending, between you and me, I planned the guest list, catering etc. and yes there were some surprises as well!
How did your book club and film club come about?
What do you ENJOY most of HOSTING a FASHION AFFAIR?
It was, before COVID changed our world, still doing fashion shows, lectures, and I was Adjunct Faculty in Fashion Studies at Columbia College Chicago for over 30 years.
NENASNOTES The Fashion Book Club just seemed like an interesting thing to do, we begin our fifth year this June, it started as a once a month, it still is, at a private club, with bubbles and bites and often a conference call with the author…I now do the meetings via ZOOM and will continue to do so, that way we can meet no matter the weather or my attendees location.  Nenasnotes The Fashion Film Club just started it’s third year, our first monthly meeting was the week we went into lockdown!  Both are great fun…I can always welcome new members! In addition, I started Nenasnotes The Fashion Master Class a weekly meeting, a small group, to discuss the history of fashion designers from Rose Bertin, dressmaker to Marie Antoinette to todays hot stars and everyone in between!
I understand you have a BLOG….tell us about that Things you post or write about?
A FEW of NENA’s BOOK COLLECTION above!
My blog is NENASNOTES.COM.  It started in 2016 and for the first several years I posted daily about just about everything that interests me…from personality profiles, to interiors, to book reviews….the list is endless.  I’m on INSTAGRAM and Facebook also as nenasnotes, I like Instagram very much for ideas, etc.  I’m afraid I follow too many posts, as well way too many blogs!  Oh well!!!!  I don’t do TikTok nor Twitter.  I do Pinterest, not as often as I should.
MORE BOOKS OF THE THOUSAND PLUS SHE OWNS!
Are you still LEARNING about FASHION or do you feel what
Goes around comes back around?
I love to learn and am obsessed with research….when I find a bit of information I want to find out more…I have over 1000 fashion/lifestyle books and of course use them constantly and what did we do before GOOGLE!!!!!.
I really never changed my style, I’m not a trend shopper, sure I’ll add something on trend at the time, my wardrobe is basically seasonless.  Obviously our bodies change…it’s called gravity!  I was very young when I started at Saks and dressed more on trend in clothing, make up and hair, as I have aged I’ve found I’m very comfortable with my basic black.  I would say I get rid of clothes more because of my body changing not my fashion philosophy.
  Nena Ivon with Bob Mackie
AND TO THINK
(I YOUR CONTESSA ALMOST SAT IN HIS CHAIR  AT THE SPECIAL CAROL BURNETT SHOW A FEW YEARS AGO
WHICH THE WONDERFUL HUSBAND of SANDRA SALLIN GOT ME INTO AT THE LAST MOMENT!)
Bob Mackie was Best known for his dressing of entertainment icons such as Ann-Margret, Lucille Ball, Carol Burnett, Diahann Carroll, Carol Channing, Cher, Marlene Dietrich, Barbara Eden, Lola Falana, Judy Garland, Mitzi Gaynor, Elton John, Bette Midler, Liza Minnelli, Marie Osmond, Joan Rivers, Diana Ross, RuPaul, Tina Turner, Sylvie Vartan, Vanna White, Pia Zadora and Barbra Streisand. He was the costume designer for all the performers on The Carol Burnett Show during its entire eleven-year run, and designed the costumes for its spinoff, Mama’s Family, and for the 1993 television adaptation of Gypsy.
What is the difference between STYLE and FASHION in your opinion?
It’s so funny that there are 13 questions, 13 is my lucky number!  Great question….to me, STYLE is in one’s DNA, can you develop it, sure….you, The Vintage Contessa, are a PERFECT example of STYLE!  FASHION can mean so many things and I think it’s main problem is how people want to be IN FASHION….what does that even mean??!!
I have a saying I always use when doing lectures….think of these two phases
“What a nice outfit you are wearing!”
or
“How wonderful you look”.
I’ll take the latter any day!
Thank you so much for inviting me to be included in your spectacular blog!

 A TESTIMONIAL ON NENA

”One of my greatest enjoyments for the past 4 years has been attending Nena’s fashion book club – imagine my (our) awe when Fern Malis, Nadeem Kahn, Jeffrey Banks, Hamish Bowles just to name a few, are authors that zoom with Nena!  I also attend her fashion master class each Wednesday, her fashion history lessons,  intimate first hand  knowledge, stories of her personal interactions and friendships with many of our designers is invaluable!  Most of us only dream of having Oscar de la Renta a phone call away!”

Elizabeth, Nena is a LEGEND in Chicago!!! She truly embodies that rare someone who has such passion for what they are doing in their daily life. You are the same. I started working at Marshall Field’s Water Tower on Michigan Avenue in 1975 and it was magical. Imagine having dinner and drinks and cigarettes with Geoffrey Beene, Bill Blass, Pauline Trigere, (and on and on) in town for a truck show after a long day of waiting on the customers? It was such an education to watch giants in their field doing it all with such wit and humor. Nena, I love this post so much – Attitude is everything and that is why you are such a legend. I hope to hop into the book group soon.

    Cheers!

Fabulous –the interviewer and the interviewee : ) Immediately subscribed to her blog, and quickly perused, and found a post on Ukrainian egg art–I had just cut out a Wall Street Journal article on the same subject! Another blogosphere rabbit hole to jump into– hurray!! Very envious of her book nook filled to the rafters and the darling pillowed chair…and loved reading about her amazing career in fashion. Believe me the fashion industry isn’t all glamour, lots of details behind the scenes but I loved my career and wouldn’t have changed a thing…well maybe some of the tedious paperwork!

Nena has obviously had a fascinating and fulfilling career. I can relate to so many of her comments…such as, “I love to learn and am obsessed with research…when I want to find a bit of information, I want to find out more.” I have been a researcher in various fields all my working life, so I know just how she feels. It is important to keep learning. I totally agree with Nena’s answer to the question, “What is the difference between style and fashion? My thanks to Nena, and to our Contessa, for a wonderful interview and for introducing us to such an intriguing woman.

What an accomplished woman! Very interesting career and the people she has met are icons! I’m with Nena on the black clothing. I’m embracing all black more and more. I wonder how I will fare in the summer months 🙂 Speaking of color, that blue kaftan is stunning and I almost chose that color! Instead, I opted for the lighter blue (slate) color. But wow, it is stunning on Stephanie.

Nena, you are a gem. I loved learning about your fascinating career, and especially your ability to rub elbows with all of those creative fashion icons!
My favorite takeaway from the interview was the question you posed: Would you rather be complimented on the outfit you’re wearing, or for “looking just wonderful today”?!? What a perfect reminder that beauty and style radiate from within, and are much more ethereal than a single outfit. Thank you!

Oh my gosh, Nena … what a life! I am fascinated. FASCINATED! It’s been such delight reading through … and I love that you spent your entire career with one company. Unusual for the times, yes. But so many benefits to the continuity. I’ve got to run off to lunch and then I’ll be back to pour over your amazing story again. Contessa … thank you for, once again, bringing us such wonderful women to learn from and be inspired by! xo

What a wonderful blog you have Contessa! So upbeat and fun with none of the snobbiness some fashion forward blogs can be. Your interview of Nena is PHENOMENAL! I’ve know her since 1986 and you asked her such great questions that I learned things about her i didn’t know!! She is truly a wonder, so gifted, so fun, so generous, so INTERESTING AND SMART – that’s why she has such a fan club, it is truly a special honor getting
to be in Nena’s presence. Anyone who wants to do something entertaining, informative and social should take one of her master classes and by all means, be part of her fashion book and film clubs – you’ll be hooked on Nena as the rest of us!!!! BRAVO CONTESSA!!

That is so true…one must do what they love and then pivot into something new but still related to one’s passion and expertise! Thank you for your lovely comments.

    Hello Nina
Thank you so much for visiting us on Ageless Style. How fascinating your career has been. I love that you were so comfortable about retiring, that you knew it was time and were happy with your decision. I think so many at our age are afraid of change. You have shown us how to move on, and take on another challenge, while still pursuing your interests. I am off to sign up for your blog. It sounds fascinating! Great job Eliz. You found another pearl!
