CAROL BURNETT AND I

November 20, 2017 95 Comments

I would like to THANK ALL OF YOU who wrote a COMMENT or sent me an EMAIL or GORGEOUS FLOWERS or a CARD……or actually PICKED UP THE PHONE!

I was overwhelmed with your KIND WORDS and WISDOM.

It REALLY HELPED ME get through LAST WEEK………….

I read them OVER and OVER……….

I did not RESPOND like I normally DO as I was TIRED and in MOURNING.

I sat around A LOT.

Someone told me to COCOON……..who told me THAT?I cannot recall and THAT bothers me!

I did just that.

I COCOONED A LOT!

I THANK YOU!

ONWARD TO THE HOLLYWOOD STUDIOS OF CBS to see the taping of the CAROL BURNETT 50th anniversary SHOW!

ARE YOU WITH ME?!

ONE OF MY ALL TIME FAVORITE PHOTOS!

I cannot EXPRESS the excitement and AWE that struck me walking into this STUDIO!

THE STAGE was BEAUTIFUL!

The camera and light and sound people were surrounding by dripping FAT ELECTRICAL CORDS!

That was FASCINATING TOO!

I didn’t DARE snap a PHOTO!

BUT I WANTED TOO!!!!!!!!!!

YOU see I was surrounded by ROYALTY!

HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY…………

RECOGNIZE anyone HERE?

The man on MY LEFT is SANDRA SALLIN’s HUSBAND of 57 years I might add this MONTH!

He is the ONE RESPONSIBLE for getting me into this show!

HE IS HOLLYWOOD ROYALTY along with HIS BRIDE!!!!!!!!!

Robert Sallin is an American television director and producer.

He also produced the film Star Trek II:THE WRATH OF KHAN.

I HAVE NEVER MET A MORE FUN, LOVING COUPLE THAN THESE TWO!

I was SO LUCKY again as I got to stay in their home for a few days…….

SO, we look for our seats……..NO names on seats for us!SO, we sat down.Sandra was not happy with the situation and so she wanders off……..only to come back waving at us to MOVE!

She meets us half way…………she whisperers in my ear ……..we are sitting next to SLIM PALEY another BLOGGER EXTORDINAIRE!

MIGHT I ADD OUR NAMES WERE ON THE SEATS!

I KEPT MINE AS A SOUVENIR!

THIRD ROW ~ CENTER STAGE!

DOES NOT GET BETTER THAN THAT PEOPLE AND OH MY GOSH LOOK WHO SAT IN FRONT OF ME!!!!!!

BLUE BLOODS STAR TOM SELLECK and his wife remember MAGNUM PI?

WHAT IS even MORE exciting to ME is that ROBERT SALLIN gave TOM SELLECK his VERY FIRST TV COMMERCIAL!!!!!!!

I think it was SAFEGUARD SOAP and he was in the SHOWER!

How many of you remember THAT commercial?

I DO!!!!!!

I just googled to make certain I spelled his last name correctly and his wife who was VERY CHATTY is an ACTRESS TOO!

Jillie Mack, Actress: Silverfox. Jillie Mack was born on December 25, 1957 in Devizes, Wiltshire, England as Jillie Joan Mack. She is an actress, known for Silverfox (1991), Adventures of Nicholas at Roaring Camp (1996) and Stephen King’s Golden Tales (1985). She has been married to Tom Selleck since August 7, 1987.

SHE told us ALL about their DOGS and kids………she was SO FRIENDLY I ASKED HER TO TAKE OUR PHOTO!!!!!!!!

She asked me to take a look to make certain it was GOOD ENOUGH!!!!!

SO NICE!

AGAIN I was sitting with ROYALTY and I was nervous to pull that phone out because I know that isNOT the PROPER thing to DO!

I was SLOW getting CAROL………………..because my conscious was telling me otherwise!

My Photos are NOT the BEST; I apologize but I was being bad and snapping very quickly………….without being SEEN!

AND

I DONOT KNOW HOW TO USE PHOTO SHOP!

LARRY PANNED THE AUDIENCE A FEW TIMES SO LOOK FOR US ON DECEMBER 3

…………thats when the SHOW will AIR on CBS!

I have another FUNNY STORY to share!

AS a couple LA CONTESSA and THE ITALIAN  watch THE BIG BANG THEORY only because THE ITALIAN has FULL CONTROL over that PUSHY BUTTON as I call it!

I couldn’t stand the show in the beginning.I didn’t even know nor had I ever heard what BIG BANG THEROY MEANS!

Science and MATH were NOT for ME!

However, the show has grown on me over the years to the POINT I LOVE IT!

I laugh OUT LOUD.

Which is RARE these days………..

I told the ITALIAN before I left on my first trip I would meet one of THE STARS!

He laughed at me!

I said, “NO, I’m serious I will have a sighting like in a GAS STATION!”

WELL……. HELLO…………………who is sitting on the sofa with the BLONDE HAIR and in a black dress with STARS?

But one of the ACTRESSES!

SHE PLAYS PENNY………….I don’t know her real name in REAL LIFE, not important BUT THERE SHE WAS AND if I do say so MYSELF better than a GAS STATION!

She was so gracious and FLATTERED to be there in the presence of THE CAROL BURNETT!

These other GALS I recognize but do not know their names either!

I would ASSUME they are ALL COMEDIANS!

They showed OLD SKITS done by CAROL.Which I can recall ALL OF THEM………

You see THE CAROL BURNETT SHOW came on SATURDAY NIGHTS when I was growing up!

MY MOM and MY FATHER and I would all go upstairs to the TV ROOM!

Sometimes they made me go to bed before it was OVER!

So, I would sneak back and lay on the carpet in the hall and watch it under the door!!!!!!!

I have VERY FOND MEMORIES of this SHOW so when SANDRA told me we were GOING I WAS BEYOND EXCITED!

I HAD TEARS in my eyes through the entire FILMING and GOOSEBUMPS!

DOESN’t SHE LOOK GOOD!

84 YEARS OLD!

This was for her 50 year anniversary of her SHOW!

It all began in 1967.

I was SEVEN YEARS OLD!

Now that DRESS behind her is in THE SMITHSONIAN…….I think they said.Made by BOB MACKIE!

Carol’s rendition of SCARLET in GONE WITH THE WIND!

Mister MACKIE made all the COSTUMES for THE SHOW!

FOR EVERYONE for  NINE YEARS!

CAROL is wearing a 30 year old BOB MACKIE DRESS for this SHOW!

I know that because she told us!

RECOGNIZE THESE GUYS!

They were doing a RE~DO and looking at the television monitor screen for THEIR WORDS!

Every once in awhile the HEAD HONCHO would say DO OVER!!!!!!!CAROL would say REALLY?

She goofed just once and stopped the film rolling!

IT WAS FASCINATING to WATCH!

BOB SALLIN HAVE I SAID THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!???

I LOVED IT.

From the valet parking to the final curtain call where we were all walking OUT and got called back as they had to RE~DO

THE

GRANDE FINALE!

I would IMAGINE this GUY has been CUT out of the SHOW!

WE shall SEE on DECEMBER 3, 2017!

KEVIN SPACEY.

A LOT OF NEWS COVERAGE ON HIM THESE DAYS!

SEE the GAL in YELLOW?

Well, when she was in HIGH SCHOOL she wrote CAROL a letter inviting her to the school play where she had a part!

Carol went and HIRED HER……..

THE GRAND FINALE!

Do you see STEVE LAWRENCE or BERNADETTE PETERS?

NOTE THE RED CARPET PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
SO, EXCITING!

LOOK where WE ENTERED!

AT THE ARTIST ENTRANCE!

TRA….LA!!!!!!!

NOW, it’s time for THE AFTER PARTY!

YES, we got to GO TO the AFTER PARTY and I MET A FEW MORE STARS!!!!!!!

COSMOPOLITANS!

One of MY FAVORITES!

LOOK what was floating on TOP an EDIBLE DELIGHT!

It stayed until the very end than melted!Someone told me it was MARSHMALLOW.

BETH from TWO BROKE GIRLS!

Her mannerisms and smile is just like she is on TV!

I  kept running into her and she couldn’t have been nicer……..I did ask her her age and NOW I forget cause this was back in OCTOBER.

Just know she is YOUNG!

This was GORGEOUS upon entering the ART GALLERY!

Made with roses……….

Bernadette had a body guard with her who did not make this photo!

Guess HER AGE?

69

YOUR CONTESSA with BOB MACKIE!

DESIGNER TO THE STARS…………

HE told me he liked my OUTFIT!!!!!!!!!

THIS was THE MAN who was responsible for the AFTER PARTY!He told us he found his suit on the way……..he had stopped for a STARBUCKS and ran into a shop! The Party was beautiful right down to the last detail……………..

GOOD THING I didNOT get my photo with HIM!

I think he might be out of work for a long long time!

CONTESSA HERE with Vicki Lawrence

She is the one who wrote CAROL A LETTER in HIGH SCHOOL and landed herself a GREAT JOB!

She even played CAROLS MOTHER do any of you remember those SKITS?

I made a real bad FAU PAUX (is that how you spell it? Spell check is not RED LINING ME!)

I made conversation with her than asked her if the man she was with was her SON!

It was her BOYFRIEND!

STEVE LAWRENCE who use to sing with Eydie Gormé who he was also married too.

My FATHER loved their voices.

I was in charge of putting the record albums on the stereo as my Father drove into the garage at night after work!

I can recall the albums along with

BARBRA STREISAND another FAVORITE.

I SHALL MEET HER NEXT!

CAROL AND I.

SHE IS A LEGEND and a VERY NICE PERSON TO BOOT!

PLEASE

watch for us on DECEMBER 3,on CBS…………

IT was an HONOR to be THERE and to MEET HER.

One of those SPECIAL MOMENTS you will NEVER forget!

THANK YOU ROBERT SALLIN………….THANK YOU!

Hello dear Contessa… So sorry it has taken me so long to comment. I actually read it last week and then my Internet went on the fritz. I am PEA GREEN with envy. I told you that your buddy, Carol and I share a birthday. I am such a HUGE fan of hers. I used to watch her show with my little Grandma. And then you met Bob Mackie and Bernadette Peters!!!! And Steve Lawrence!!! I always dreamed of being Edie Gorme!! I am taping the show tonight so that if I catch a whiff of the royal Contessa and Sandra I can go back and do a freeze frame. Have fun watching tonight.

I was in New York a few weeks ago and Carol Burnett stepped into the elevator with me. We rode the 12 floors together and, as corny as it may be, I HAD to tell her what a HUGE fan I am and how much we miss her on TV. She beamed, we laughed, and said she loves hearing that and told me to be sure to watch her December 3rd 50th anniversary special! Wouldn’t miss it for the world!
Great post !!! thank you ! and LUCKY YOU!! Xox- Suzanne

As one of the plethora of Carol fans who love this post, I admit, we are slightly disappointed you didn’t get a photo with her husband Brian, only because we never seem to see him in any photos in general XD That said, fabulous post! (And your Spacey snark is much appreciated. Too bad Julie Andrews couldn’t show up there with Christopher Plummer ;P)

Carol Burnette was a big part of my growing up as well. I won a drama scholarship to college by winning a nationwide, high school competition, performing Carol’s big monologue from “Once Upon a Mattress!” I would have loved to have met her and told her that but Im so excited you got to meet her! Your enthusiasm and appreciation are absolutely charming!!!…I am a GINORMOUS fan of Carol as well, though I am a few years older than you so I remember watching as a teen, AND my husband and I never missed a show – even when it went into syndication!
We still remember most every skit and laugh like it is the first time when we see re-runs.
You and Sandra both looked simply gorgeous, perfectly attired for such an auspicious evening!!
And your Kevin Spacey remarks had me rolling on the floor in front of my computer…do you know how hilarious you can be?!?

THAT is JUST ME…………….I tend to say what I THINK which can get me into TROUBLE now and again!
There was the time at the grocery store where they use to say your name as they handed you a receipt!80% of the time they cannot say my last name…….it’s NOT HARD!But think of the pressure on those people………..trying to get it right!
After about a year of this ridiculous CUSTOMER SERVICE DO~DA………HYPE I told one of the store officials they need to get rid of it……..she did not speak to me for TWO YEARS!
They did DO away with it shortly after I complained!
I was trying to HELP…….Move the line a little FASTER, have NO STRESS as they wrap up THE DEAL but this woman took offense!People are FUNNY and I GUESS I AM TOO as I HEAR THAT A LOT……….I take it as a COMPLIMENT…….SO THANK YOU!
I’m really NOT much of a TALKER……………..more on the quiet side!BELIEVE IT it’s TRUE!

I loved this post, your excitement is infectious. What wonderful friends you have!
I once had the privilege of touring a costume shop partially owned by Bob Mackie, in Studio City, via a friend who worked for him. I ran a book club that she belonged to, and she arranged an after hours tour. It was so wonderful to see all the dress forms with clients names (can’t remember anymore who they were). In my youth I dreamed of becoming a costume designer, so this was quite a treat for me. There was an archive of costumes, and there were huge photos on the wall of his most iconic work, including the Scarlett dress. He also did Cher’s costumes! So beautiful. That was my thrilling Bob Mackie moment.

I experienced a bit of the same excitement yesterday, at an exhibit of Marc Chagall’s costume work for operas, at Los Angeles Museum of Art. I hope that in a parallel life I did go on a become a great costume designer. Nowadays I just make cosplay outfits for grandchildren. 🙂

BTW, I love the photo of you, with your mother and a puppy, when you were a little girl. Your mother looks so wonderful. What a lovely lady!!

Really glad you had this happy, cool time after some of the more challenging of life’s “events” you’ve had to go through recently. Sending big (pretend they’re “Hollywood”) hugs…

What a fun time. The only live tv show I’ve ever seen was The Rosey Greer Show, over 35 years ago. I enjoyed it and found him interesting because he did needlepoint! Fun experience.
Do you watch “Blue Bloods” ? A way to still get your “Tom Selleck” fix.
We watch “Big Bang”. Such great writing and dry humor.
So glad you had such a wonderful experience.

How wonderful you got to do this!! I grew up watching Carol and her show and how great to see everyone there. I cannot think of my mom who adored her so much. I love Vicki too. Bob Mackie is also looking great. I can’t wait to see the show and look for you. Sandra and her husband are darling. So cute.

By the way, tell Giampi ( is that how you spell?) Big Bang Theory is also my husband’s favorite show and we went down to Warner Brothers a few years ago and you can see where they film it and even watch it if you are there during filming season. It’s a great tour and he might have fun.

Thinking of you all week. Hoping you are being kind to yourself. It’s a hard time.
    Hugs, Kim

Also, in case you’re wondering, let me share the names of those comediennes: Amy Poehler, Maya Rudolph, Jane Lynch, and Kaley Cuoco. I shall be sharing in this week’s newsletter. Lucky you!

What an incredible star-studded glamorous evening! Carol Burnett is as American as Apple-pie on the 4th of July! A Mrs-iz-za Wiggins….who will ever forget. Next to the Missus Ellen’s portières sketch, the Mrs-iz-za Wiggens with Tim Conway was my favorite. Tom Selleck….SWOON…I remember that commercial he was in. It was as iconic as Farah Fawcett’s…”Take it off! Take it all off!” commercial..long before Blue Bloods and Charlie’s Angels. Oh, those were the days! Innocence and fun. YOU and SANDRA looked like you could have been up on that stage yourselves. You two looked so glamorous and STELLAR! What a wonderful event honoring a special program and much loved star…Carol Burnett!

Carol Burnett was my idol. She did humor that was nice but not prim. She was laugh-out-loud funny without ever being mean. Today, with a few exceptions like Amy Poehler and Tina Fey and Amy Heckerling, comedians seem to feel a need to be “transgressive” in order to get laughs.
She sure looks great. Clearly she had work done, but only enough to look like a younger/smoother version of herself, not stretched or blown up in ridiculous proportions.
I love the image of you watching the show from under the door. My mom was strict about no TV. But Carol was on Saturdays, and we got to watch, although I’m kind of surprised we got to stay up so late. I suppose over 11 years, bedtime got later and later.
Somehow I think you and Carol would have a great time together. She’s missing out!
