CHEERS TO MY HEALTH!

January 7, 2019 300 Comments

WELCOME 2019!

I think last year was the FASTEST YEAR EVER for me!I can recall MY FATHER stating the OLDER you get The FASTER it GOES!

He was RIGHT!

A few of you have inquired about MY HEALTH over this PAST YEAR and I have remained pretty silent on that issue!

If you have been FOLLOWING me for sometime you know I had asked for YOUR HELP!

TO SEE THAT BLOG POST from MARCH 13, 2017 GO HERE!

I still SUFFER from THE EPISODES as I call them and now am entering year THREE!

MY DEFINITION of an EPISODE is my EYES GO I cannot focus and I feel like I will PASS OUT!

It’s hard for me to keep my eyes OPEN.

I cannot walk!

The episodes last for MINUTES!

Once the Eyes come back into Focus I am left with a terrible HEADACHE from the base of my neck to the TOP of MY HEAD.

The Next DAY I usually feel like a TRUCK has HIT ME!

To say I am a bit discouraged is an underSTATEMENT!I have seen Medical Doctors, Cardiologists,Neurologists,Endochrinologists,Acupunture Specialist, Massage Therapy and now a HOMEOPATH.

I lost over half my head of HAIR!

I have shrunk over a FULL INCH.

I am VERY TIRED even though I have exercised my entire LIFE!

The latest NEWS is I have OSTEOPOROSIS of the SPINE!

But lets back up a moment to where I found OUT I had a LEFT BUNDLE BRANCH over my HEART this past FALL!

Back in SEPTEMBER I was boarding a flight to London and as they were announcing the boarding sections I was throwing up in the recycle bin!

I was able to board the Flight barely and had asked for help as I entered the plane.Of course, they questioned my well being and wanted to make certain I could FLY!I assured them I was OKAY and just needed to sleep it off!I felt I had gotten FOOD POISONING from my can of TUNAFISH I had eaten before leaving for the airport!

It only got worse and I will spare You the DETAILS!

Once in England I was able to function but SLOWLY.

I barely ATE.

I traveled with a PLASTIC BAG in my BASKET BAG ready to pull out in a moments NEED!

I sat by Myself in the bus just in CASE!

AS the trip was ending and I found myself in London for four days I had to go to bed in the afternoons to MAKE the Dinner or Tea dates!

Here I am in the LAND of MY DREAMS and I am in BED!

After coming back HOME I ONLY got worse!

I WAS SO SICK!

Again I have NEVER had FOOD POISONING so did not know what to think but we are Now in week THREE!I did figure it OUT!I was on a medication from NEUROLOGY which was a pill that gradually added mg each week! The day I boarded the FLIGHT I was at FULL DOSAGE!I was reacting to the meds and having ALL the SIDE EFFECTS!

GOOD NEWS IS I LOST 20 Pounds!

Bad News is My doctor did not get back to me in a timely manner nor seemed concerned!I was VERY VERY SICK!

After calling and emailing I finally got a DOCTOR on CALL who helped me go off the medication!I had started reducing the meds by myself as I did not get a full answer from my NEUROLOGIST!(He told me to reduce meds but did not say by how much!)

I am OFF those seizure medications!I would rather LIVE through the EPISODE than be on those medications!I was on TOPAMAX,which is a seizure medication but used for MIGRAINES.

This was the third or 4th medication they had tried on me!

Now, I have to say all along I thought it was my HEART giving me trouble!

I have had HEART surgery on the MITRAL VALVE in 2010.About five years later I learned from a check up ECHO that the VALVE was leaking again! It was ALL MATTER OF FACT and NO real concern as it was NOT bad enough to go through the surgery AGAIN!It has never been brought up to me in follow up visits.

I WAS BESIDE MYSELF WHEN I LEARNED THIS NEWS!

But here I thought it was my HEART that was FAILING me!SO, upon returning from ENGLAND I demanded TESTS!Especially a STRESS TEST which I knew I would fail!Just because of my breathing and huffing and puffing!I was having all the SAME SYMPTOMS I had before I had the heart surgery!

I arrive for the STRESS test!

SAME woman I have had for the last 20 plus years!

MONICA!

Can I be BLUNT?

Cant stand the woman!

They have me hooked up to the monitor with wires all over my chest and Monica comes over and asks if I exercise.I say YES!I do PILATES REFORMER 3 times a week.I LOVE IT!

“Whats the Reformer she asks?”

Then she goes into a DIATRIBE about how I need to get my HEART RATE UP and that’s NOT GOOD ENOUGH!

I explain I cannot do aerobics as I feel LIGHT HEADED and have the sensation of fainting if my heart rate goes too high. The same happens WHEN I WALK !

SHE CONTINUES TO LECTURE ME!

Now my BLOOD PRESSURE is on THE RISE!

She goes back to the machine and says “Well, you will NOT be having a STRESS TEST today!”

WHY NOT I SAY?

“Because you have a LEFT BUNDLE BRANCH over your HEART!”

She gives me no EXPLANATION as to what that is and marches out of the room to talk to the doctor in charge.

I am given another HEART test instead where they inject a fluid into your veins that makes you feel like your exercising!DURING THIS TEST THE TWO ATTENDANTS TURN THEIR BACKS TO ME!A side effect of this test is a HEART ATTACK!

ARE YOU STILL WITH ME HERE?!!

LET ME INTERRUPT THIS BLOG POST BY TELLING YOU ABOUT…..

EYEBOBS GLASSES

GIVE AWAY COMING NEXT POST!

THE GIVE AWAY GLASSES ARE LIGHT PINK in color!

THE POWER IS 2.00

(All you have to do is LEAVE A COMMENT on this  BLOG Post or the next BLOG POST and YOUR name will GO into a MAGICAL TOP HAT to be PICKED AS A WINNER!I will then MAIL off TO YOU with another TREASURE from MY CASA!)

After these tests have been completed and there were a few it comes to the attention of my CARDIOLOGIST that no one did an EKG!He would also like my blood pressure taken!I can go at any time and just walk in……..

I arrive and tell the receptionist WHY I am there and also my doctor would like the BP taken! She informs me I need to go to the THIRD FLOOR for a blood pressure reading!I’M IN CARDIOLOGY!The first thing they do is sit you down in a chair and take the vitals!!!!

I think be CALM ……….do as she says YOU have the time!

I also tell the GAL who does the EKG!

Her response was,” I don’t know where you would have that done!”

I’m in CARDIOLOGY PEOPLE!!!!!!!

SO, knowing that the offices CLOSE FOR LUNCH and it is close to noon; I RUN to the third floor!YES, I’m out of breath!I say to the receptionist I’m here to get my BP read at the Injection clinic. He says,”Oh thats on the second floor!”I arrive on the second floor,”They are closed until 1:30!He does tell me I can go downstairs to have a reading in the EDUCATIONAL department!I say THANK YOU and off I trot!

I walk around the room and do not see the MACHINE!

There are TWO PEOPLE behind the counter.

I ask….. They Point!

BIG NEW MACHINE!

I try 4 times……..NO NUMBERS!

I turn around and say”Is it working?”

They ignore me.

SO, I get up and walk to the counter……..I can tell THEY KNOW NOTHING ABOUT THIS NEW MACHINE!

NO blood pressure reading.

Now, I’m at The medical building and I was so sick over the weekend we had to CANCEL DINNER GUESTS!I think why don’t I try to get an APPOINTMENT with ANY doctor………(AT this stage I still think I have had food poisoning.)I go back upstairs and ask the receptionist. His response which I  knew what it would be, but thought I would try anyway!”Oh, I cannot do THAT!” HE SAYS.”DO you have the APP on your PHONE?”I say, NO APP on MY PHONE! “Than he explains I must go to THE LAND LINE on THE WALL and call the phone number posted there!

I say you mean &*%-*$#@ and he smiles and says “YES!”

( I Know ALL the PHONES NUMBERS of this MEDICAL BUILDING BY HEART!)

I walk to the phone.

I’m tired Now and Frustrated.

There is NO CHAIR under the PHONE but a BANK of chairs within reach……but they are all hooked together so I sat on the FLOOR!

I call The NUMBER.

I wait.

SIX MINUTES for a REAL PERSON to answer.

The gal comes on the line and asks me questions which I gladly  answered!

She sends me to an ADVISE NURSE.

I answer her questions.

She puts me on HOLD.

I wait.

She comes back on the line and wants me to talk to a doctor!

I do and have both these women on the line with me.

I’m still on the FLOOR!

Now, recall what I really wanted was my Blood Pressure Taken and as an after thought; I thought I should be seen by a doctor as I had been SO SICK for the last month!

The doctor comes on the line and states that from my answers to their questions I was a “WALKING HEART ATTACK!”Please get myself to EMERGENCY NOW!

Mind you this is the FIRST DOCTOR I have spoken with since the TECHNICIAN MONICA has told me I have a LEFT BUNDLE BRANCH!

I thank her and say I will walk myself to EMERGENCY NOW………

I DO and GUESS WHAT THEY DID FIRST THING?

Took my BLOOD PRESSURE!!!

It was HIGH!!!!!!!!!

I wait 20 minutes for the Emergency Room Doctor.

A thirty-something DOCTORESSA arrives and likes my shoes!I tell her ANTHROPOLOGIE!

I fill her in on the LAST THREE YEARS of EPISODES and being so SICK since LONDON which was in SEPTEMBER and we are now in OCTOBER!SHE looks into the computer and sees the EKG that was taken within the last hour.

SHE explains to me that the BUNDLE BRANCH was NOT there TWO years ago!(THE LAST EKG PREFORMED ON ME)and that I could have suffered a small HEART ATTACK!My doctor can have tests done to see if that was the case!I’m thinking to myself…….good GOD I don’t think I WANT TO KNOW if I did have a HEART ATTACK but that is INTERESTING INFORMATION!

ARE YOU READY FOR THIS?!!!

SHE than turns to me and says ,“WHAT ARE YOU DOING HERE?”

I say, I wanted my Blood Pressure read as requested by my CARDIOLOGIST and than thought I should be seen by a doctor as I have not been feeling well and the doctor IN YOUR BUILDING on the END OF THE PHONE sent me here……….I state ,”ARE YOU RELEASING ME!” She says ,”YES” and with that she walks OUT THE DOOR!

I SAY “GREAT!”I can go HOME AND FEED THE CHICKENS!!!!!!!!

DO YOU BELIEVE THIS?

I’m still in shock about it………so I thought I would SHARE THIS CARE that I HAVE BEEN RECEIVING.

I HOPE THIS IS NOT A UNIVERSAL PROBLEM!

THE PAIR BELOW GIVE ME GREAT COMFORT!

SIR WINSTON and THEODORABLE

IN Night TIME MODE!

I’m Now seeing a HOMEOPATH who has me on a DIET as SHE feels it is a FOOD ALLEGORY which is causing THESE EPISODES as I call THEM!

She has me writing down ALL that I eat and DRINK DAILY!

The LIST is LONG of FOODS I CANNOT HAVE.

TO give you a brief idea NO GRAINS what so ever, even GLUTEN FREE.

NO,NIGHT SHADE VEGGIES which are Bell Peppers,Tomatoes,Potatoes,Eggplant and Okra.

NO RED MEATS

NO TURKEY

NO SHELL FISH

NO FERMENTED FOODS like ALCOHOL,VINEGAR,PICKLES,SAUERKRAUT,ETC.

NO TEAS except GREEN TEA.

NO ASPARAGUS

NO Processed SUGARS

NO MAN MADE SALTS like SODIUM NITRATE,NITRITE and ERYTHORSORBATE.

NO PERSERVATIVES

NO CHOCOLATE

NO GROUND GRAINS

NO FLOURS

THIS HOMEOPATH states she will TAKE CARE OF ME……….since I have Not been TAKEN CARE of the PAST THREE YEARS!

BUT I’m Human and Fell Off the LIST a few times with Chocolate and TEA and ONE GLASS OF WHITE WINE during the HOLIDAY SEASON and ON DECEMBER 26th I had a GLASS OF VINO!I have NOT had wine or alcohol since the beginning of SEPTEMBER!(Only because I did not FEEL WELL ENOUGH!)

I QUOTE”

“OK so you are going to have a hard time for a little while if you keep doing this cheating thing.”

I’ll spare YOU the other TEXTS!

I WAS NOT GIVEN A HANDOUT ON DAY ONE when I was told to start this DIET.

It was all verbal……..I had never heard of NIGHT SHADES BEFORE!

She did say I could have ONE COFFEE A DAY!

I STARTED THIS DIET ON NOVEMBER 4, 2018.

I’m doing MY BEST PEOPLE, but am finding it TUFF to find things to EAT!

I start my day with CELERY JUICE……THANK YOU MEDICAL MEDIUM!

I than have a LATTE from our Italian coffee machine that is industrial, which is ONE TABLESPOON of coffee with ALMOND MILK!

I need the CALCIUM…….for my OSTEOPOROSIS!

I have given up A YOGURT for breakfast as my ACUPUNCTURIST feels I was eating too much DIARY.

My tongue has been enlarged and that means one is retaining to much moisture he tells me!

I had given up WHOLE MILK TWO YEARS AGO by suggestion of my FIRST BORN.

I SAW A BIG DIFFERENCE in the TUMMY AREA!

NOT so much BLOATING!

CALCIUM percentage in WHOLE MILK is 25%.

ALMOND MILK has 45%.

I eat AN APPLE with CHEESE for lunch MOST DAYS……..as it is filling and QUICK!

I do have SOUP for lunch if I have made it and have EXTRA!

I made a GREAT Bok Choy SOUP YESTERDAY!

DINNER……….well there I have BLOWN it as I did not get the HAND OUT until recently of the NO NO’S TO EAT!WE eat mostly chicken and salmon and RED MEAT for DINNER!

Dinner consists of a PROTEIN, vegetable and green salad ALWAYS ending with FRUIT!

THIS IS THE ITALIAN’s WAY TO EAT and I have to say OUR KIDS were NEVER SICK GROWING UP!

SO THERE YOU HAVE IT!

Where I STAND TODAY………MY Episodes are getting shorter in length and the feeling of PASSING OUT HAS NOT ACCOMPANIED them in this last month! They still come every two weeks give or take. Last year they came every TEN DAYS like CLOCKWORK!I could schedule my LIFE around them almost!

I get NO WARNING!

They just HAPPENED.

I’m pretty worthless after they have VISITED ME for the rest of the day.

IF ANY OF YOU HAVE HEARD OF THIS OR KNOW SOMEONE WHO IS EXPERIENCING THESE KINDS OF WAVES WILL YOU PLEASE SHARE WITH ME OR THEM!

I would appreciate any FEEDBACK you may have!

THANK YOU and I promise the NEXT POST will be MORE UPLIFTING!

MY LAST THOUGHT IS:

I DO WONDER if the OSTEOPOROSIS has anything to do with THE EPISODES?

I KNOW YOU PEOPLE ARE SMART AND CARING!I see that from your comments and emails and phone calls!AS of today I have LOST 30 pounds since the FIRST of SEPTEMBER, which is TERRIFIC but I am a bit worried.

I only drive roads where I can pull over………….which has limited my LIFE GREATLY!

I WISH YOU ALL A WONDERFUL 2019!

I will CONTINUE to PUSH AHEAD and NOT GIVE UP as I have some VERY EXCITING PLACES TO VISIT THIS YEAR and I HAVE TO BE FEELING WELL!

OMG Contessa!! You have had the worst run around. I’ve just dropped you an email so I won’t Bore your Readers with my thoughts here. Suffice to say, if your recent photos are anything to go by, you are the Most Glamorous Sick Person I’ve ever seen – plastic emergency bag in your handbag or not! I can barely summon the enthusiasm to even brush my hair when I’m feeling poorly, yet you can still dip into your accessories collection and colour match your lipstick. I’m constantly learning how to shake up my priorities from these pages.

Cheers to your health from me and plenty o’ baci

Dear Contessa I can only echo everyone else’s sentiments don’t give up. The wonderful Italian can perhaps do some pushing of the doctors as well. Thank you for being you and I can’t imagine how annoyed you must have been trying to get your blood pressure done – although you did make it sound funny. It was just too preposterous. I have Ari’s new book and it is fabulous. Take care and you look amazing but you always have.

OH my word, Elizabeth. What a complete palaver you’ve had. No solutions, more stress, and such a waste of so much of your time. I hope this diet does some good, and I agree, living with the episodes is better than living through that medication. Keep me posted. Maybe you just need to go somewhere like the Mayo Clinic for a week and let them get to the bottom of this.

Dear Beautful Contessa, whilst your new svelte look no doubt makes you even more of a vision of loveliness; dramatic weight loss should always be investigated. I thought you had first world medicine in America, your dismissive treatment sounds appalling. ?. Get yourself to a caring physician or functional medicine Dr as quickly as possible. I believe you should have a full body scan, and be admitted for a battery of tests until they can give you a diagnosis and treatment. How awful to think that like the regal swan, you have been gliding along before uswith every posting but beneath the waters, paddling with some difficulty. We all hold you in our prayers for a speedy resolution to this ordeal ??

Hello Contessa, During all your exciting posts we never imagined that you were undergoing these episodes! Medicine has become so specialized that now there is no central person to take care of your case and tie all the threads together.

Do you have one of those home blood-pressure machines? They are very inexpensive (mine was about $50, and is the same brand they use at the hospital, just smaller), and you also get the consistency of always testing on the same machine, plus no waiting!

By the way, I still have your card up–it is the brightest spot in my living room!
    –Jim
p.s. Leave it to you to make us laugh during your recounting of these distressing problems. Still, we are worried about you, so please make your health a priority, even if it means dealing with these difficult people.

Elizabeth – I’m SO sorry to hear that you’ve been dealing with all this. I think the uncertainty of things, especially health related items, weighs heavy on ones shoulders and seeps into all parts of life. I can only imagine how frustrating this has been. I haven’t read all the comments, but a few things come to mind. Of course, I’m not a doctor. But it does sound like several things are going on all at once. (Heart issues, osteoporosis, “episodes”) One more thing to check, in addition to the full panel of thyroid tests, is iron levels. Just being mildly low in iron can cause shortness of breath at the top of a flight of stairs, for example. And, what made me think of it is that low iron may also give you a high heart rate. Also, at some point ONE doctor needs to step up and coordinate all your tests, etc. That’s why so many recommend the Mayo Clinic’s diagnostic programs. Very expensive, but also very thorough and comprehensive. I have not done this myself, but have had friends do so and with success. There is one in Arizona if Minnesota seems too far. The team of docs are all there to discuss your case so usually patients leave with answers.

If you do wish to stay within in your current medical system, you could switch to specialists here in SF. I can recommend a cardiologist in SF who will listen to your story. Let me know if you would like her contact info. She’s with Kaiser SF and her office is on Geary St.

I hope you are able to get a diagnosis soon – 3 years is too long for all the uncertainty. Thinking good thoughts and fingers crossed.

Elizabeth, I am so worried to hear you are still having these issues! I do not like how you were treated at all, and you absolutely have to find a new doc asap. I would try UCSF if you can. You have to get to the bottom of it. My neighbor suffered horrific pain and was unable to sleep laying down for 3 years. His doctor never tested to see if he had gallbladder issues. Finally after desperation and so many ER visits he switched docs and they diagnosed it on the first visit. His life has changed so much. You cannot stay with these people. Also the food thing may make you feel better, but do not count on this curing it. You need some real medical advice. The racing heart can be partly anxiety, and menopause- I have had it too. The heart thing makes me wonder they aren’t more concerned. Bless you for still doing the trip in the state you were. You would have never have known. I think you look gorgeous- the hair, the glasses and everything. Take care and PLEASE go see a new doctor. Sending love and hugs. xoxo Kim

To those deriding homeopathy, there are MDs, DOs, and NDS who are medically trained and are also homeopaths! Homeopathy just adds more tools to the toolbox, but Elizabeth, is your homeopath one of those, and what’s her/his homeopathic certification?Anyone with the previously-mentioned degrees can legally practice homeopathy, but that doesn’t mean she/he’s an expert.

This sounds extremely distressing, and my heart goes out to you.
if a food allergy is suspected, you may be interested in taking a look at The Plant Paradox, written by a world-renowned cardiologist, and also experienced in autoimmune diseasesDr. Gundry. His clinic may even be not too far away. I’m pretty sure he’s on the West Coast.

Elizabeth dearest!!! I am speechless…. what a load of $&@%#¥#! I can’t believe the low level of everything the doctors and nurses you have encountered have reached. They must be exposed, can you imagine what other people with less possibilities go through if you went through that?!!
I would have everyone share your post, you must tell the hospital and doctors names, maybe a layer wants to pick the case, send it to The Huntington Post. I was so happy for you to read ALL the wonderful suggestions you received , I’m sure you are going to find an answer with all this love and support, sending you mine from my little corner, my flame is still too weak but I’m fighting!

Well; I agree with many of the responses. You need to change physicians. My husband has had such great luck with his physicians. What insurance do you have? You really need to switch physicians. I agree with trying an elimination diet but perhaps try another homeopath. Again my husband has had great luck with homeopathic MDs.
I’ll message you – my husband goes to Sutter Health on San Pablo in El Cerrito. And his cardiologist is Dr. Peter Hui @ CPMC in SF. Dr. Hui is excellent. As is his team. CPMC is a great hospital. Good luck.

The CPMC docs in SF. The GP my husband sees at SUTTER is Dr. Christine Simon. She is great, as are a few nurse practitioners. Yelp has low stars for this practice; but this doc & NP or PA Wardlaw is also great. Go.

    Hello again

Question I have now rereading this blog is do you have copies of all the tests/results that were done so that you review them and take to next health person you see.

My husband is adamant about getting copies of all tests/reports.

We can now directly view our blood test results online.

    VIA EMAIL from WALES!
    Dear Elizabeth,
Amanda from Wales here wishing you a happy new year.
I have tried to reply to your blog post ,but for some reason it didn’t display…so decided to write to you with some suggestions.
I was rather amazed at the sheer disjointedness if your recent troubles, and somewhat dismayed.
I was a nurse for 30 years, not a Dr, but will give you my thoughts. I have no idea if there is a single condition that would explain all your problems, but the left bundle branch block really does need to be looked at with some urgency. I do not understand, as an ex a/e nurse, why you would be sent home from a/e!!!!
It can mean that you’ve had a heart attack or that there are other heart problems…but they need to investigate! The attacks when you felt like passing out can be explained by possible heart problems.Have you had a 24/48/72 hour tape? Usually just done for 24 hours, but can be for longer if nothing picked up. You wear a little monitor that records your heart rhythm, and show up any arrythmias.if you have had a heart attack as was suggested, you may need to be on different medications. It is inconceivable to me, that your Dr wouldn’t have a Bp machine in their office!!! Can you change Dr, get a second opinion,/proper workup?
I hope that is helpful. I must admit you do look great in your photos.
    Wishing you all the best
    Amanda xx

Oh, dear! I agree with many of your readers that thyroid would explain some of the symptoms. There are two bloodtests for thyroid. My doctor for years thought I had thyroid problems but only did 1 of the tests. Finally, both were done and a thyroid problem was discovered. There are several types of thyroid problems: low thyroid (hypothyroid), high thyroid (hyperthyroidism), Grave’s disease,
    Hashimoto’s disease.

If you usually have low blood consistently but now have high blood pressure, then what has changed? Is a tumour causing the high blood pressure? A pituitary tumour could among other things affect the amount of thyroid stimulating hormone and cause fast heart beat, high blood pressure, heart disease, increased sweating, thin skin and weight loss. A friend had one which was successfully removed. You should see another doctor, tell him or her that you are concerned about losing the weight when you were not trying to. This is an immediate red flag for a doctor — unexplained
weight loss. Also mention about the hair loss. Definitely check out the thyroid and your vitamin levels –– folate, B12, Vitamin D, B6 etc etc. Are you on blood thinners? After I broke my arm, I was on a short chain heparin. My hair fell out in clumps. Hair will fall out with a thyroid problem, too. With a folate problem, it may fall out and turn grey prematurely. There is a real bias against women in the medical profession as they just think we fabricate symptoms. I had about 8 MRIs that were all interpreted incorrectly. Only on the 9th did someone correctly interpret what they were seeing and I ended up having brain surgery. You are NOT dumb, you are NOT stupid. You are a woman who deserves answers and good treatment. Don’t tell a doctor what you think you might have (some egos cannot take this even if you are right). Instead, tell them your symptoms. If you went to an endocrinologist, go to a new one for a second opinion and make sure you tell him the symptoms that are more recent. Persevere.

I agree with Ellie’s friend about the possibility of a pituitary tumor. Your symptoms sound just like my cousin’s. Vision problems (caused by pressure on the optic nerve from the tumor), fatigue, dizziness, weight loss, hair loss. The pituitary is the master gland and can affect many systems and functions in the body. Her tumor was removed with a proton knife procedure.
My second suspicion is thyroid problems. H
      Best of luck to you!

Also, thyroid problems can be caused by pituitary tumour.

Does the blood thinner cause hair loss? I’m not sure which one you had but the one I was on (a short-chain heparin) caused my hair to fall out massively. What about yours?

Someone above mentioned being tested for diabetes and that was my second thought. Should be ruled out and would explain cold feet, feeling like fainting, etc.

Maybe don’t assume weight loss due to topamax. Might be coincidental.

I am so sorry that you are going through this medical hell. I agree with so many, kick those docs to the curb and find new caring and more knowledgable ones in your community, or, as so many have said, go to the Mayo Clinic.

I have a friend that experienced low blood pressure that was exacerbated by dehydration who experienced some of your symptoms, but not all.

Also, I believe that low blood sugar may produce some symptoms that align with some of yours.

Challenge these doctors. The answers they are giving you are not enough. I just sat picturing you on the floor…on the phone trying to get care IN A CARDIOLOGY UNIT after you were blown off by those who were suppose to be helping you. I have faced-off against doctors, but I have NEVER experienced such incompetence and callousness in my life! That should not have happened. This could be a combination of issues….viral/medication/underlying health problem. Do you have a Patient Portal with your Health Care Service/Hospital/Group? It serves as a record of your concerns, dates you messaged them, specific answers they gave you. It also is a document of care. I found it very useful in the past as I had to advocate and push hard for care. If I didn’t…I would be dead. I backed them into a corner with their previous written communications and was able to get an ultrasound…which showed the problem. The doctor who had been blowing me off..changed her tune and I was in the hospital prepped for surgery within days. I told them where the issue was and they told me I was wrong. They told me I had cancer and I told them to wait for pathology as something was not adding up. Well…I am here today…I was right and they were wrong. CHALLENGE, PUSH, DOCUMENT

This is all beyond CRAZY!!! I have certainly had my share of ridiculous episodes with the medical profession that go on and on without proper answers – why is it that doctors have a hard time listening to women of a certain age – but this tale is just traumatizing. And nauseating! Surely, there is an answer. OK, here is what may sound like a strange thought, but the New York Times Magazine, at least I think it is the New York Times Magazine, used to have a column in which medical professionals try to figure out what the diagnosis is on someone’s mystery condition. If that still exist, perhaps you might consider getting in touch with them? To a degree, it is like crowdsourcing in a public venue calling on medical expertise. Certainly not as good as being at Mayo (for instance), but who knows.

Meanwhile, personally I am extremely wary of physicians who do not know me prescribing medications. This happened just a few days ago when I was in the emergency room, and I very explicitly explained that I am extremely sensitive to medications, always have been, and generally have to be dosed closer to a child rather than an adult or I get sick. I was sent home with a script that was a full adult dosage, despite my explanation, of a week long medication, as explained to me by the pharmacist who filled it. Needless to say, I am very leery of trying the medication, particularly because if I have an adverse reaction there is no one around to help me out.

WTF? And I can’t tell you how often this has happened in my life. And I wind up either sick from the medication or having to get an alternative and/or child dose.

I wish you a speedy resolution to this bewildering situation. xoxo

I thought about the NYT too. The series is called Diagnosis and invites readers (well, readers who are health professionals or med students) to suggest a diagnosis to the case that’s presented. From the bottom of the latest such article: Lisa Sanders, M.D., is a contributing writer for the magazine and the author of ‘‘Every Patient Tells a Story: Medical Mysteries and the Art of Diagnosis.’’ If you have a solved case to share with Dr. Sanders, write her at Lisa.Sandersmd@gmail.com.
And today the NYT had an article about the Undiagnosed Diseases Network: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/07/health/patients-medical-mysteries.html?action=click&module=Well&pgtype=Homepage&section=Health

Just found your blog today – not sure how, but perhaps the why is serendipitous… similar health experiences for myself and my husband. We are loathe to dispense specific health advice, but I will tell you that we have finally found the right combination of doctors for us.

First, our primary physician is an Integrative M.D. whose concierge practice specializes in treating patients at the cellular level. Sometimes we question the annual cost and huge amount of testing she does (much of it not covered by insurance), but she keeps us on our toes and healthy. An added benefit is that we can contact her by phone, e-mail or text at any time with questions or concerns.

Second, this M.D. has referred us both to an Integrative Cardiologist who has changed the course of our individual heart problems. Mine is mechanical (mitral valve) possibly caused by radiation following breast cancer surgery or Lyme disease, and my husband’s is electrical (for which he previously had multiple heart surgeries and cardioversions, all failures).

Third, two books by the same author (Stephen Harrod Buhner) have made sense of much of the advice we’ve been given over the years. One is “The Transformational Power of Fasting – The Way to Spiritual, Physical & Emotional Rejuvenation.” The other is “The Secret Teachings of Plants – The Intelligence of the Heart In the Direct Perception of Nature.” If you read nothing else in that last book, at least read Chapters 4, 5 & 6.

May this be the year you find true health from your own health care providers! Ours are both in St. Louis, but if you’d like their contact information anyway, just email me. Best to you.

Have you consider going to a different hospital. I had an “incident” almost 4 years ago. I went to the local er where I was admitted. The head cardiologist told me I should transfer over to the Cleveland Clinic. They handled all the arrangements.
My experience has been the complete opposite of yours. Every appointment the tests are emailed to me. They provide a graph showing each appointment lab results and compare it visually so I’m able to keep track of what going on. Every doctor in the network is connected so each one sees without me having to tell them any of my medical history. This really sounds like shabby treatment. That’s enough to increase your blood pressure.
I also have osteoporosis but I doubt that’s causing your problem.

      I agree with Leslie,
A lot of what you mention sounds very thyroid like. I would get blood tests and also your vitamin levels at the same time. Something like low B12 can cause a great deal of issues. Hopefully it’s just something simple. Secondly I know they like to prescribe estrogen for osteoporosis and if so I would explore other options. I would stay on dairy, butter , eggs and beef stock (High in bone building and general nutrients)

I agree with Leslie, it sounds very thyroid like. I would get blood work done and nutritional panel. Being low on B12 can cause a lot of those issues. A diet high in milk, butter (K2) bone broth and liver provide great building blocks for thyroid and bone health. Did they give you estrogen for osteoporosis? I think that is problematic and I would seek alternatives. The most important thing is to to find a good doctor! Who listens and is thourough ….. not so easy to do . Keep us updated xxx

Two years ago, my mom was having some different types of episodes. We eventually got her to emergency. They did blood tests and CT scans. Nothing! Finally they did an MRI and found a tumor the size of a large lemon in her prefrontal cortex. She had surgery and is doing fine. Her neurologist even said that without persistence it might have gotten overlooked. Good luck, best wishes and sending you love.

I am so very sorry for this crazy medical merry-go-round you have been on! Very upsetting.

You need a new MD…..look online for the best rated MD’s in your city. Ask your local friends if they recommend their doctors. Do your research and don’t be afraid to change docs until you find the right one for you.

A good MD will be able to refer you to the appropriate specialists, if needed.

There are some wonderful, caring, well-read doctors and they usually know the best specialists in your area. I went through 5 docs before I found mine 7 years ago. She and her two nurse practitioners are fabulous. My husband and now many of our friends are her patients.
    Love you fun lady….good luck!

I agree with Josephine–get a new doctor. Your doctor should be taking your blood pressure! What kind of medical institution sends a patient all over the building to get her blood pressure taken? I think you can also get blood pressure devices pretty easily at drugstores to monitor it yourself.
Ask your new doctor about seizures. They can develop with age (you and I are the same age, so I’m not insinuating anything that doesn’t apply to me, too!). And aren’t there other cardiologists in California?
This past summer, I drove someone to the ER. It was serious and they were admitted. We waited a total of about 10 minutes (no spurting blood…if you ain’t spurtin’ you ain’t hurtin’). I waited far longer to get news while the patient was undergoing tests. I observed the others in the ER, and nobody waited very long–0-5 minutes to sign up with the receptionist, 2-10 minutes to talk to the triage nurse, 0-10 minutes to be called for treatment. Of course, it being France, it’s all covered by socialized medicine–no surprise bills.
If your problem is vascular (heart/veins), then losing weight could be easier on your heart. It’s true that Pilates doesn’t exercise your heart but it’s great for your back and other things (I do it!). Walking is good for your heart. Housework can be, too.
Do you take anybody with you on your doctor visits? Your husband, or one of your sons? It can help pressure them to step up. For example, the neurologist telling you to reduce the meds but not saying how much. For crying out loud. Tell the doctor you’re going to record with your phone so you don’t forget anything. That might help HIM remember to give you all the details.
You certainly look great, and I love your glasses. I will send you a photo of my new ones, which are similar. But -7.5 bifocals. I don’t qualify for your giveaway.
Wishing you a solid, benign answer to your spells soon, and a very happy and healthy 2019.

Good grief, what a run around! You need to be checked out asap by Dr, do you have a good GP? Or can you go directly for cardiology referral. I am amazed that you weren’t evaluated more in A and E tbh.A new left bundle branch block should be investigated, it could possibly explain your episodes of near collapse.I am so sorry that you are having a bad time health wise I hope that you get some answers and help soon. Have you had your thyroid checked. My good friend had many of your symptoms and she had thyroid cancer. Hers even started with what she thought was food poisoning. She also lost 30 pounds and had no energy. I would recommend that you come to Dallas and get an appointment at UT Southwestern Medical. She went through the doctor run around and made huge progress once she went to this hospital. I can even get the name of her doctor. I’m glad to say she much improved today though it has been a tough journey of dealing with idiot doctors!

Wow, unbelievable what you’ve been through and all the running around when you went to see the cardiologist. I think the homeopathic method sounds excellent and food allergies definitely can cause many health problems. I had mentioned this to you before when you asked for ideas, etc. I have 21 food sensitivities which were found through a blood test many years ago. I did a 4-day rotating diet for 2 months, eliminating all the sensitivities (wheat, rye, oats, nightshade, which includes potatoes, tomatoes, mushrooms, eggplant, etc), cows milk, yoghurt, oranges. Doing that eliminating diet for two months really made me realize how much better I felt when I didn’t eat the ‘bad’ foods. Now I can eat a small amount of some of these foods but I definitely have to really watch it.

Sending you love and healing vibes so you totally get strong again!

    Love,

I had read before that all those food types definitely were bad for people with arthritis or rheumatism. I do eat a tiny bit of grains but I know I shouldn’t eat them at all, except for rice which makes me feel fabulous. It gives me air!

Salads are fabulous but eating only an apple and cheese for lunch would never be enough for me… and besides I avoid cheese. I only occasionally eat a tiny piece of cheese. I buy vegan cheese often, though. The quality in the US isn’t as good, though, at least that’s what I experienced there in May. Hopefully that’ll improve.

Nice that you’ve lost weight but don’t lose too much!

        Hugs xoxoxo

Dear Elizabeth, you are always so upbeat and cheerful so it almost comes as a shock to hear how sick you have been. I thought that your episodes were no longer bothering you. I really hope that you will soon get a decent diagnosis. It’s true that some medicines can have nasty side effects. Maybe you need to make a list of all the ones you are taking to see whether they are reacting together as it can happen. Maybe you can find a pharmacist who can help you. I’ll be thinking of you.

OH gosh, I am so sorry you have been thru such a horrible time!
Regarding the nutritional help- about 10 years or more ago I was having terrible health issues with many very weird symptoms. The traditional medical route was providing no help what so ever! I started seeing a highly trained Naturopathic Doctor (she works together with MD)that finally helped me. It did take a lot of time and education on my part. One thing I found out was I have an auto immune disease-Hashimotos.(no quick cures for auto immune situations)(FYI-celiac is an autoimmune response). The doctor put me on a very strict elimination diet for 3-6 months following that list you showed above. I was very religious about following it as I was very ill. Well, I can report I started to feel so much better. The plan was after the several months on the diet I was to introduce back in one thing at a time to see how my body reacted. It was a very revealing process! The doctor did provide me with lists and resource suggestions and it was a serious lifestyle change. One main resource I continue to use for cooking and other useful info is elanaspantry.com To this day I have learned I do much better without grains of any kind and very little dairy. I love those foods but I just don’t feel great after I eat them. I was also told the body reaction can take up to 10 days to react after eating them. Have you been logging food items in your symptom book? For the past 15 yeas I too have kept a symptom log book to report to my practitioner. It has been very helpful and revealing. I wish you much luck and vital health on your healing journey! Please call me if I can be of assistance.

My dear you have suffered. Find a new doctor your treatment has been appalling. I had dreadful problems with stress, osteoporosis for 10 years, even needed a mobility scooter for a time, couldn’t walk, lightheaded could gracefully hit the floor when welcoming people and kissing them on the cheek, happened with a very handsome airline pilot he said he hadn’t had that affect on anyone before??It was so everyday my husband really took little notice . Then my condition slowly improved , I can walk,I can exercise I drink more water and don’t pass out , self help we have to take charge of our own bodies, I am still on blood pressure meds, and a small dosage of citaplam but am feeling so good. My mother also suffered from your episodes for many years at your age, eventually they went she also had osteoporosis ??As my son says “box on” I am sure a good Mediterranean diet even f it contains ‘ nightshade fruits and a glass or two of vino will see you improve. My love and thoughts with you COURAGE??

OMG, Contessa…..this is terrible news. I can give you no suggestions, but I will tell you, that I have distrusted the medical field since the 70s. I am 77 and only go 2ce a year for blood work. I go to a chiropractor, and self -treat. However, your situation is more severe…..you need to find connections….that is the only way to get competent help. Our country is falling apart, and we “seniors”are also. I am simply outraged at the lack of care you received. I believe you should have been a bit more vociferous…..the skeaky wheel gets the oil……I hope somebody will help you, but the homeopath, I fear, is not helping. Wait,,,,,,,I do know someone you can contact…..she has a doctorate in nutrician. She is a bit strange, but really knows her stuff. Her name is Beth Ley in Mn.
She has helped my son with mental illness, as he refuses traditional meds. Look her up on the internet, as she will come up. She actuallyis the ex wife of another of my sons……long story there!
I loved your gorge photo and sweet note …have it tucked into a mirror, so I see you daily! I am sooooo sorry this health thing is putting a cramp in your life….you must get it resolved, one way or another. I wrote you in the fall, and told you I was working at the most uncreative ladies retail store in the world, and I have decided I have to find something else asap….well, that God awful place is Talbots,,,,or I now call it the new Macy’s………mark it up, mark it down, blah blah, bluh. Please carry on and keep us posted……if all else fails, call Beth……that diet you are on now is too extreme! GET WELL!!! Fondly, Victoria

Please go and demand a blood test. And don’t leave until they do it. None of this sounds right and much as I respect homeopathy you need to see a trained medical doctor, especially with your medical history. Blood tests should look at your hormone level, due to you being a lady of a certain age, but also may indicate something more serious. This is not to scare you, but the sooner you receive a full and accurate diagnosis, the quicker you can be treated. Also I think that a chest X-ray would also be no bad thing to really check and see exactly what is going on. A full body CT scan will also do this. You need all these things done as a matter of some urgency, and you need you AND the lovely Italian to support in this. Please do not be fobbed off. If you wonder why I am presssing you to do this, it’s because of my own experience. Don’t need to bore you with too many details, but suffice to say, if I had pushed harder and trusted my own instincts and not have been fobbed off, my own prognosis may have been better. Knowing what I know now I would always insist on bloods, X-ray and CT scan. Those 3 should show anything that’s serious up straight away. Please go..I love your blog and Instagram..it has lifted me on so many dark days…so Thank you. This is a tiny way I can payback the enormous pleasure you have given me.
