COLLECTOR IAM!

January 31, 2022 85 Comments

WELL, AS A MATTER OF FACT I DO………..

HOW MANY COLLECTIONS CAN YOU SEE HERE?

I COLLECT SO MUCH OR I DID ITS HARD TO TAKE INVENTORY OF ALL THAT I DO COLLECT!

I KNOW A GOOD THING WHEN I SEE IT!

SINCE I OWNED AN ANTIQUE SHOP MANY YEARS AGO I THINK TEN YEARS AGO I CLOSED THE SHOP;

CAN THAT BE TRUE?

I WAS ALWAYS ON “THE HUNT.”

YARD SALES, CONSIGNMENT SHOPS, ESTATE SALES and FLEA MARKETS and my occasional trips to EUROPE.

I was known for leaving clothes behind just to get THAT TABLE IN MY LUGGAGE!

They were GARDEN TABLE’s actually!

There have been TWO that I brought back in my luggage over time!

One from LUCCA, ITALY and one from L’Isle Sur La Sorgue in PROVENCE, FRANCE.

THE ITALIAN just shakes his head at me!

I WAS SO PROUD I DID IT AND DIDNOT HAVE TO PAY SHIPPING!

SO WHAT EXCATLY DO I COLLECT?

BOOKS I LOVE BOOKS………

Problem now a days; I do not remember much of what I read, but I do enjoy the READING PART!

Especially if it has a lot of photos!

I binged in two or three months and found all these USED BOOKS ON CECIL BEATON.

A MAN I WOULD HAVE ADORED from what I have read!

MADONNA bought his HOME in the country in ENGLAND.

It came up For Sale recently and I did DREAM about BUYING IT!

Did you know he did the costumes for MY FAIR LADY?

CAN I JUST SAY THOSE HATS were THE CATS MEOW!

I COLLECT HATS TOO!

I dragged this ORCIO back with us FROM ITALY…………..bought the velvet church letters with our initials from THAT BIG PARIS FLEA MARKET on the outskirts of the city.

SEE the old silver cigarette holder?Well I collect these too not that I ever smoked, but I loved them as they look like garden urns to me!I have been known to use them at the table for each individual person with Flowers.Above the initials is an old clothing rack I think came from I. MAGNIN’S on UNION SQUARE in San Francisco!

I HAVE THIS ONE AND TWO STANDING ONES WHICH I ADORE!

I collect Chandeliers………….YES, I KNOW how MANY CAN ONE PERSON USE!

SOME ARE NOT WIRED JUST THERE FOR THE LOOK.

BECAUSE THAT ITALIAN WILL NOT CONVERT THEM FOR ME………..

ONE DAY I’ll get my way when our eyesight gets SO BAD which is happening to me at AGE 61!

I KEEP SAYING to MYSELF WHAT WILL GO NEXT on THE BODY?

No ONE TALKS ABOUT THESE ISSUES!

Well at last count I have SIX(chandeliers) in the KITCHEN which does not include the pantry!

TWO MORE IN THERE WHICH I LOVE!

HATS I HAVE A HUGH COLLECTION……..NEW AND OLD!

I learned in my 50’s how important they are for the Body!

To keep warmth in as I am ALWAYS COLD and the sun out of my eyes which have ALWAYS been SENSITIVE!

Not to mention off my FACE!

I use an old scale in the kitchen as a GARDEN HAT RACK……..

Works for me GRAB and GO!

I also keep a couple in the car!

Just in case the SUN is beaming down through THAT sunroof!

I also collect silver salt and pepper vessels…….sterling or plate.

I love the different styles.

  PORTRAITS AS WELL!

YOU SEE I HAVE A VISION OF MY KITCHEN WALLS BEING COVERED IN OLD ANCESTORS!

SOME are PRINTS but others are painted……….

I hope one day to inherit a few more and to make room. The prints will DASH RIGHT OUT OF HERE!

ONE DAY ONLY THE REAL DEAL WILL ADORN THESE HIGH KITCHEN WALLS which THAT ITALIAN BUILT!

THEY WILL EACH BE NAMED AND WHILE I WAIT FOR THAT ITALIAN TO COME HOME

I CAN HAVE A DEEP DISCUSSION ABOUT THE DAYS EVENTS with MY NEW FAMILY MEMBERS!

YOU would think I could get a better container for the FISH FOOD!

The newspaper covers up the PRECIOUS OLIVE OIL from the direct sun.

OH there is another thing I collect FOOD DOMES!

  SILVER.

What is NOT to LOVE ABOUT THEM?

My BIGGEST One HIDES A PLETHORA OF PAPERWORK!

Along with SILVER BABY CUPS and SILVER FRAMES and SILVER CHAMPAGNE BUCKETS!

IF YOU THINK I AM OUT OF ROOM TO DISPLAY IT ALL YOU ARE SPOT ON!

I collect old Autograph Books……….Crowns and Costume Pearls!

 ANYTHING THAT SPEAKS TO ME!

IT is a GOOD thing I have been HOME most of the LAST THREE YEARS………

Little damage has been done EXCEPT in the CAFTAN and KIMONO department!

They make it SO bloody easy……….TAP TAP enter three digit code and thats about it!

The SALE is COMPLETE and I look forward to looking OUTSIDE my DOOR!

GUESS you could say I COLLECT BIRDIES VELVET FLAT SHOES AS WELL…………..

every time I buy a pair they send me a survey to fill out and I do as I am TOLD and I get 20% off my next pair!

OH don’t forget the JULIA CLANCY TURBANS!!!

I went crazy two years ago and bought many ON SALE as my hair kept falling out!

I thought I should be prepared!

AND my latest find…….CATIQUES!

THANK GOODNESS I DONOT LIVE DOWN THE STREET FROM THIS WOMAN!

She takes vintage rhinestone pins and fur clips and turns them into STUNNING necklaces!

The Beauty of these is she finds OLD CHAINS AS WELL.

  TALK ABOUT RECYCLING!

I seem to do THAT too with VINTAGE STEMWARE!

  WELCOME TO MY KITCHEN!

Here you can see THREE of the silver FOOD DOMES!

  I HAVE MORE!

  TOILE PILLOWS BY COTTAGEBYDESIGN!

Her instagram is HERE just TAP IT HERE she is doing three dimensional HEART SHAPED PILLOWS for FEBRUARY 14th!

THE DESK………I KNOW EXACTLY WHERE EVERYTHING IS I NEED!

 PHOTOS!!

I COLLECT PHOTOS I STILL LOVE TO PRINT THEM!

KNIFE RESTS ARE ONE OF THE CHEAPEST THINGS TO COLLECT!

I average about TEN DOLLARS A PIECE!

I THINK I NEED MORE STUFF!

I SEE SOME BARE WALLS AND THAT NECK IS GOING…….

Perhaps some NECK CREAMS WILL BE MY NEXT SPLURGE!

WHAT DO YOU COLLECT or are YOU at THAT STAGE IN LIFE where you are PASSING ON and Cleaning OUT?

Don’t ANSWER that question I think I know the ANWSER ALREADY!

I just received this from an INSTAGRAM FOLLOWER she painted my kitchen!

  SHOULD I PURCHASE IT?

  SEE HER INSTAGRAM RIGHT HERE…….

I DONOT THINK YOU HAVE TO BE ON INSTAGRAM TO SEE?

TELL ME IF I AM WRONG?

  PLEASE!

I somehow first left a comment on an old post of yours.
I don’t think I collect much of anything. I barely have room for my books these days. Trying to find some way of somehow expanding the shelves I already have 🙂
You find joy in everything and that is one of the things we all love about you. Hope you are doing well. You always look so joyful and I need to be more like you. Finding joy shouldn’t be difficult.

What a treat to get a peek inside your beautiful home! Love all those collections, especially that you collect chandeliers! Were all those photos on the side of a refrigerator? I wasn’t sure what that was. And what do you do with all of your hats? I’ve been hat-collecting lately and they do take up some space. Another fun and interesting blog!

I just LOVE your collections, LA CONTESSA! Everything is stunning and working together for that layered look. Your home should be in a magazine! I’d like to say that you are looking fantastic and your health is showing. You are positively glowing in these photos!
I collect china tea cups. I was given my grandmother’s small collection when she passed and have continued the tradition. However that said, I hate to say that I have had to curb my collecting impulses as much as I love the ‘maximalist’ interiors. We live in a two bedroom, two bath apartment, which is quite spacious for the city. Still, I have to be careful as we have no additional storage. I am living by the motto that if I don’t use something regularly, it goes—UNLESS it is precious sentimental value.

They say our homes represent our personality. My favorites are the paintings and the tapestry. Of course I’m drawn
to anything glittery and shiny, must have been a bird in former life. Have you thought about a series of tall shelves, that way each collection could be appreciated by yourself and others. Your housekeeper must be so special to clean so carefully, I would be terrified I might break something. Enjoy your collections.

Oh the comments! They are wonderful. Your home tour was a gift this am! Love it all. I think it would take a day to view all of your incredible collections. My downfall is anything for the desk. Letter openers, inkwells, antique writing instruments, hand blotters, mail scales, 100 yr. Old letters from all over the world, etc. I love to photograph my little treasures in black and white as the process evokes the old world feeling I am trying to achieve!
Thank you for sharing your joyous home. Your personality shines through it all!!!

I can think of nothing more comforting and happy than to be roaming around one’s home and delighted with all you survey… pure joy! I’ll admit I lean to being more of a minimalist but think in large parts that comes from moving 25+ times between 7 countries in the past 35 years. I tend to have a few nice things that I adore that I can enjoy because my living space limits how much fit that criteria. I probably do need to downsize my closet contents, the high heeled shoes that will never get worn again, the pieces that have sat on their hangars for the past couple of years. However I am no adverse to adding new pieces that bring me joy. We have a trip to Morocco and Europe booked for later this year and my eyes will be open looking for pieces that I know I will enjoy having in my life.

Once a collector, always a collector. You certainly have found many treasures over the years . The Cecil Beaton books are quite a find , I do love and collect fashion books , also gardening books . A tad envious of your turban collection , all simply divine and so very glam. Although I do admit to having my own hat collection. How I would love a peek at your collections if ever I make it back to California again. Thank you for sharing your joy of collecting Elizabeth.

Contessa … while the topic may be collections, this post is the BEST Home Tour on the inter-webs. Magnificent. I love the domes … and the knife rests. And, YES, you must have the painting. Per your instructions I won’t answer the question about collections. Sigh. So glad you introduced me to Cottage by Design. Two heart shaped pillows are making their way to me. Hi Elizabeth,
Your home is a wonderland! I love it so much. I’ve tried not to be snoopy but on all the trips to the bathroom usually I take a circuitous route so I can see more! I am a bit of a collector too, although not in your league! I have a lot of luster ware, Japan made paper mache’ trays from the 40’s, etchings from places In Europe we’ve traveled, fun carved fish from whenever we went to Hawaii, my “girls” made from coconut shells in Mexico from our many trips there back in the day. Then there are all my books, copper pieces, blue and white ginger jars, candle sticks, etc etc. My husband would say I collect sweaters, shoes, and art supplies! (My studio is proof of that!)
So you see we are kindred spirits! Now I am trying to pare down to only the best and my favorite things, get rid of the things that don’t hold personal meaning. And also, collect more friends and moments of JOY!
You are the best, keep doing what you do so we’ll!

Thank you, dear Elizabeth! Your house tour inspired me in so many ways. I(to my children’s chagrin) also have several collections. Like you, I once had an antique shop and was lucky enough to travel and shop in Europe and at home. I’m really happiest with all my treasures out on display. Seeing them everyday brings joy and memories and thoughts of who may have had them before me? Such a pleasure to see all your bits. Take care and I’ll think of you as I’m dusting!

Lately, I am looking for interesting garden ornamenture for the new courtyard. I am not sure that is a word. We collect many of the same things. Love the hunt!

    Hi there CONTESSA
    Great blog.
My house is collecting dust and spider webs asI’m not too mobile due to my injuries.
What do I collect? Well in the past it was ceramic birds during my Mexico travels and then glass paperweights during my travels in England. In the end too many of both so gave a lot away.
I do have a nice collection of small boxes but they are having to stay in a drawer as this current cat we have liked to flick them off the buffet and mantle onto the floor! Most annoying to hear crash!
My husband said I am not to walk down the back lanes in our neighbourhood anymore as they are a great place for me to collect things that people are throwing out. I have gotten some nice pots – metal plant stands – pictures – small tables – wooden bird cages for the garden. Another person’s junk is a treasure for me. One day a man said to me – what are you looking for – I see you looking in the bins. I said glass jars – in the summer I like to make floral arrangements from my garden to give away to people that I have met on my walks. Well, about 2 weeks later he was at my door with a box of vases that he had BOUGHT for me and a bag of ribbons. So kind. This was so I wouldn’t have to look for jars.
Pens – I can never resist getting a free pen from a shop/bank etc. One can never have enough pens. My husband has said NO MORE PENS. These I would take and give away on my holidays in Havana.
On my walks I always take a bag and collect cans/bottles on the ground – my neighbourhood clean up. These are worth 10 cents each. I told my nephew this is my TAX FREE retirement income.
I do have a collection of rings – earrings and necklaces which I should wear more. Also shawls for the winter. Books too – I save my favourites.
Thanks for sharing your fab collections.

BUY IT!!! I can’t believe you even gave it a second thought. It’s a fabulous painting and it belongs in your house. I want to see it on your wall the next time I visit. We’ll sip something delightful from your stemware and compare our book collections. Books…this is one area where I’m pretty sure I have more than you! ?

Elizabeth , I loved that you finally shared more details about your home. I have had so many questions from readers, since you were on the Californians at Home! I love the Cecil Beaton stack and I see the cocktail book- have you made one yet? He was a genius and the Madonna at his home were always my favorite Vogue layout!
That hanging rack from I. Magnin is so neat.. There is no end to the unique and beautiful things you find. I do think you need to invite the Libertine guy over to your home. You two are simpatico. If I had to pick two favorite things, I guess you’re refrigerator with all the pics and the silver and glass collections are so amazing.. well I guess that’s three! Please share more stories of how you found it all and we still need the yard treasures and a post about your portraits through the years!! Love this! xo

Thank you, thank you, thank you! After being home, going nowhere, and seeing nothing stimulating for so long, I feel as if I got to come over to yours and wander through your home absorbing everything. Absolute “eye candy!” I feel revitalized!
Since downsizing in order to live and travel in our motorhome for a few years, I don’t have many collections any more. The few things I wouldn’t part with (which went into storage) were wicker baskets that I have collected since my 20’s, and beautiful cigar boxes. A collection of framed art from artist friends – a photo collection of my sweetie’s motorcycle adventures through the years,, and a few of my own favorite photographs.
Knowing our kids don’t want our stuff, I keep trying to pare down, but… it’s challenging.

Oh, collections! And yours – the books, the vintage stem wear, the jewelry, the hats, the paintings! And yes, I can especially totally relate to that having had to live with the people in my life telling me that I collected too much art… And of course there are other less space-consuming collections that I am incredibly attached to, some that date back to childhood (antique doll furniture for example). We will not even discuss the shoes although I haven’t worn any of them in more than two years now. Sigh. Oh, and the chairs, which I confess do take up a bit of room. May I sigh again here?

I think some of us are naturally inclined toward the richness and beauty of well worn, hand crafted artistic objects. And that does not preclude our love for more contemporary objects as well. It is that aesthetic appreciation that in part fuels our desire to enjoy these objects every day, understanding how important the creative process itself is, and how creative collecting as a process can be.

And let’s face it, it is also about beauty. The things we feel are beautiful, how they make us feel, how our senses come alive when we interact with them.

Besides, the pleasure of the hunt, the chase, the discovery – all of the memories around these activities – and of course the history and stories in well-worn objects… what’s not to love?

    Sending hugs,
    D.A.

I enjoying seeing other people’s collections, including YOURS… but I never have been much of a collector… just a kitchen shelf of small lusterware (after seeing it featured in Martha Stewart’s magazine about 24 years ago)… and a dining room cabinet shelf of 20 Limoge tea cups. I won’t take them when I downsize… but will anybody want them??

I used to collect stamps and put them in books. I collected Snoopy stuff as I didn’t live too far from the Daisy Hill Puppy Farm store in SF, then I became a teenager and collected music, then I became a college student who kept moving to the cheapest room to rent yet I was in love with my minor, Children’s Literature, so I picked up books thrifting in Oakland, Concord, Alameda, and Hayward, etc. Now I’m a mom to two young adults and both my parents have gone on to dance in Heaven’s garden. I helped cleaned out their homes and that definitely led me to pare down and simplify. Currently, I’m in a one bedroom apt. and, I’m still doing paring down as a gift to me to enjoy now and a gift for my children for when I pass on. The things I collect now are moments of joy and memories of good times together. Your collections are quite delightful. It would be a fun couple of days to visit and see them in person. I do so enjoy your blog. Enjoy your week, Contessa.

Hello Contessa, I think you know already that I support you in all your collections. If I listed all the things I collect this comment would be longer than your post. In fact, if we had gone out collecting together, the flea markets would look like a plague of locusts had visited! I too admire paintings, but I also love prints and engravings; they would forever have a place. Incidentally, silver food domes always remind me of Whatever Happened to Baby Jane, which I consider definitely a plus.
