DO YOU FOLLOW TRENDS?

February 9, 2015 108 Comments
THAT was the question put to us on MARSHA’s A-LIST this month by PENELOPE!
For the BY INVITATION ONLY SERIES.
By-Invitation-Only
When decorating your home(s), or those of others, do you follow TRENDS?  Or, DON’T FOLLOW THEM?   DO YOU HAVE “A LOOK WHICH YOU REPEAT OFTEN?”

Tell everyone where you begin when facing a blank, empty room?

And, as several of you are actual “real interior designers” tell us what you do when your client owns items which you ABSOLUTELY DESPISE?

NO!

I DONOT FOLLOW TRENDS……………at least I do not think I DO!

IMG_7587

I adore looking at coffee table books or magazines, but I have to say I DO MY OWN THING!I buy what SPEAKS to ME and I buy too if I know it’s a GOOD price.Whether I need it or not!

Here are WAY TOO MANY  photos of my home…………….as you can see I do not have your typical CALIFORNIA HOME.There is not one piece of POTTERY BARN in this house.Thrift shops, antique shops, farms, flea markets……………consignment shops have all added to the warmth of MY HOME.I buy not knowing where I will put an item sometimes. It has NEVER been a problem. If I LOVE it it will FIND a spot in my HOME.

My look has been labeled iTALIAN which is not quite right! You would NEVER see a home in ITALY that looks like this!I think my style came from living overseas and DREAMING of what could have been. You see I being the AMERICAN had NO DESIRE to leave ITALY and move back to CALIFORNIA.My ITALIAN HUSBAND made ME!But back to my STYLE………

Do I repeat a style she asks………….IN Essence you could say I repeat the IDEA of BRINGING THE OUTSIDE INSIDE.I adore concrete garden furniture in fact, I would LOVE to do a room with ALL concrete benches, tables and garden chairs.Mind you the foundation of the home MUST BE SOLID!Can you see those garden benches with velvet made to fit pillows with tassels on each end! That would be VERY much me in my perception of BEAUTY……..

I decorated our home with “FOUND OBJECTS”I love the THRILL of the HUNT or I should say I did when I had an ANTIQUE SHOP.

As far as starting from SCRATCH or a blank room I just did that with my SONS room………I slowly am adding items back into that space but only items I have had elsewhere. You see I have too much STUFF……………and not enough room to display it properly, but I have NOT reached that AGE where I am ready to LET IT ALL GO!

If I were to decorate a HOME and the PAYING client were to have a piece or TEN that I TOTALLY didNOT ADORE I would tell them.I would tell them WHY.Most likely it would go something like this………”and that table are we keeping that?WHY?There is NO STORY THERE………NO HISTORY………..NO SPILLED drink rings………..NO homework WORDS engraved through the paper on it.It SCREAMS NEW construction, poorly made, most likely made in CHINA and it has NO PATINA!If I were YOU I would eliminate it!We can do BETTER………….!!”

Here you GO…………….you will either say YUCK or you will sit up STRAIGHT  in your chair…………………..

Swooning, missed the Ferry !!! Of course dear Elizabeth I had pictured your home in my mind and it exceeds my expectations!!!! Walked through again and again. My old Farm looked just like this, and now my apartment with a few emissions. Love Saint Francis in the lavatory or powder room, bishops robes crowns, dog and cat hair add to the ambience. This is a home, not a sterile massed produced project home that comes with furniture. This home has soul!!! It is wonderful to be surrounded by things that tell a story, I HAVE Really ENJOYED THE READ

    Dear Contessa,
Elizabeth I find you regal and dignified and I want to express how much of a delight this tour has been. There is refreshing vibrancy in your saturated color hued walls with rooms filled with your treasures. Rich layered collections holding stories to share that offer a glimpse into your persona. The Girandoles that survived the SF ’89 earthquake, the merry go round carriage … All captivate and I for one would love to sit down and soak in your displayed cherished pieces. No you don’t follow trends, I applaud that, I do not either, I follow heart pulls that feed my soul.
I live in Philadelphia and being in a historic city my house reflects the colors and textures of cobblestones, bricks and stone but since I was 3 I’ve had a re-occurring dream of retirement in Tuscany so our row-home reflects the hill towns in choices of pieces that hold very special meaning to John and I. I have an Italian husband too.
Oh Contessa I have one request … Please show more of your intriguing home.
    xx,
    Vera

Elizabeth, I forgot to answer you here…
I rarely ABSOLUTELY do not DESPISE anything someone does in design, I find even what may not look to be useful or beautiful something in this piece I will reimagine it I to something.

As for my HOME, I have never followed the rules or trends, you won’t find anything of mass production in my home, and if so its old and has been reimaged into something soulful. I have had my grandfathers ladder from Paramount Movie Picture studios that has s’en Manu of his set designs for years in my home long before it somewhat became a trend to prop-up and display, and as for his 250 year old dinning room door I aquired it for my home when he was the last in passing, it was there and then I went into the barn rafters to retrieve it for the memories and stories in which that door lead to. Again not a trend when I aquired it, and for the lack of space in my small cottage home it serves as a story and a memory to where that door opened to and now leans against my walls opening to nowhere but just a memory.

I love that you keep your stories and memories at close reach with your display of collections.
I think you know me enough dear through blogging and our phone chat to know that I gather and collect pieces that don’t follow any certain trend except for the trend I create for myself. I like to live in a space that I don’t see everywhere else, as well as créating in the same manner my art surfaces, and that’s tne feeling I get from how you live…. Uniquely you.

      Awwww! Lady “P”
I spent time with Fifi in Santa Barbara at Renee and Gordon’s W. Home and I’n sorts I get this same rush of beauty in Elizabeth’s home that I did with Renees cliff side beach gate house.
It was magical to see her wares displayed so freely taking on the elements of the sea. While windows were opened to allow the sea to visit it was our visit, my daughter Hannah and myself that was treated to this same euro chic vibe that makes living so freely beautiful…. The French have a saying about their Brocante fleas “Not quite valued, but not quite worthless” it is how I value our friends who live their “Joie de vivre.”
I adore the Spirit in how our sweet contessa LOVES! And everyone who doesn’t is so missing out.

I also so enjoy your beauty in your home, as I have visited you and commented a time or two.
It’s so inspiring to see the beauty that comes from within and plays out in our homes.
Grace and beauty to your days ahead.

Sheesh! My last sentence was…..(before I was rudely interrupted by an “user error” I am sure)

Elizabeth is the living, breathing, laughing, loving example of the personification of “JOIE DE VIVRE”!!!!

PERSONIFICATION!!! THAT MEANS SHE IS JOIE DE VIVRE WALKING AROUND AS A PERSON!

    AND SHE IS.

What a treasure she is…..how lucky we are to know her and see her house……(and not be allowed to see the ITALIAN husband’s garage!)

And see the dust; and the crowns….and the gardens…….I cannot wait to visit!

She has created a “world around her”; and the people who live there
(her boys grew-up!!) and “lived there” grew up in “Magic”!!

They may not know it now…..but they will get it.
Lucky us she shared it with us!!!

“Joie de Vivre” is the secret to happiness in life!!!

And if you have it…..it will carry you all the way through! In happiness!

It requires you “finding the happiness” in life…..constantly.

    However……it is always there!

Haven’t you met people with “joie de Vivre”?

Stay with them! They spill happiness all over the place….and you will be filled with it; too!

Stay away from the “cynics”; the one who always see the grey clouds….and never the “silver lining”!

“Joie de Vivre” Has been the one clear goal in my 43 years of decorating!

Oh my dear contessa, post often your home, it’s amazing and I want to move in…. Can Hannah and I come for a very long stay? Pretty please!
You have a home to love, and seeing in on a grander scale as this post I have fallen in euro chic love.
I couldn’t begin to tell you what I love best, I would have to say the biggest surprise is shoes in a FRENCH RABBIT cage, how you inspire a French heart here…. I am getting up and walking off my little French cottage to see what I can reimage into something, I must sneak over and become your peeping Tom.

The awnings I have seen similar to your style in homes but nothing with the spirit and soul as yours… Please share your bedroom if not to personal, I would love to see where your dreaming takes place.

Elizabeth will be “setting trends”; she has never followed “trends”; and I like to think the “trend” she will be setting is this: “follow your heart; buy what you love (there will always be a place for it); care not for the value or provenance, nor the “fashion”; just “if you love it”!
And your house will be full of “YOU” and things that matter to you!

Elizabeth’s house is the story of her life! How fabulous is THAT???

      My favorite!

ps as Mario Buatta says……dust is preserving antiques! (or something like that!!)

the reason this is on here twice is because this host (or whateveryoucallit) said that I had said the same thing twice…no. It was the one about twelve back.

Then it published it twice! just delete one or the other! I did not publish it twice….but when I objected…..it put it back!!

      Ornery girl; I am!!!

ps go look at velvetandlinen.com for the most personal, non-trendy house I have ever seen (except Elizabeth’s) and completely different from ours. Steve and Brooke built a house in 10 months….(when he told me that I thought he was crazy) Yes. 10 months ..move in and landscaped. The miracle of the century to me! completely personal…..I don’t think one “trend”!
Not one that I could possible find! Personal……brilliant……warm and creative…..take a look!

I love that you are you and dont put on any show other than the mad hatter euro drama that is YOUR style. So refreshing in the blog world. Rules are meant to be broken! I am a collector too and I love seeing someone else who embraces excess. Why have one painting when you can have 500?! Love this. But when I come, you’ll have to check my bags for your pink plates.

No, you definitely do not follow trends – they come and go just like food trends do so it pays to be yourself. And your house speaks volume as to who you are! As a very lucky visitor to your incredible home on various occasions I can vouch for the “where do I look now?” as there is so much for the eyes to feast on! My younger son is so enamored with you and your house that he loves to pop in to visit – I will forward him this blog. As for your garden – well that is just as interesting in all different seasons and creates a beautiful backdrop for your fascinating home. Well, we know you will never be “on trend ” but that is what we love about you!!

I SAT UP STRAIGHT the moment I saw your new post pop up in my email! OHHHHHH Contessa dear, YOUR HOUSE IS MAGIC! I like, I LIKE! You are like me in so many ways. You buy what YOU want, and somehow it all equals out to European finds, not modern, American things. There is such a warm in what you have displayed (chandeliers, CROWNS, metal objects and stone) – all of these elements work together so well.

YOU are one stunning woman. You and I have the same hair! Mine is still very black but with a lovely streak of gray on the sides. GOod glory, you are stunning. LOVE THAT BLUE VELVET!

Well, this was fun. Your garden fountain is TDF! LOVE!

Elizabeth trends come and go, it makes a very expensive way of decorating for those who chose to do so. I buy what I love, whether it be an outdoor statue that adorns my antique dresser or another antique mirror found in a thrift store, I bring home loved pieces that stay with me for life, just maybe moved around the place a little over time. Each piece owned is a piece loved until I am ready to give it away to someone who appreciates it more. The joy of giving. x

Well; I think you get it!

Great trends never stop being trends…..maybe that is the answer!

I cannot imagine pinning a “trend” anywhere in Elizabeth’s house! Every single thing has a story….and a wonderful story…..and there is not one identifiable trend I can find in that entire place!

Just divine creativity and personal stuff everywhere! (and I thought there was a lot of stuff in my house! I realize I have a lot more room!)

Your home is as eclectic and whimsical as I thought it would be and as I think you are too. I knew you did not follow trends. I like how all your pieces tell a story. I wish we’d kept more of the things my nanna had in her cellar after she died. They had such wonderful stories to tell. But, alas, my mum and her siblings got rid of almost everything. Believe it or not, flea markets are few and far between here and the stuff in antique shops is WAY over my budget. A lot of our furniture is made locally though. I can’t abide things made in China anymore and am trying my best to get rid of them.

NOW this is a sad story!

All you younger people have to pay attention! This darling lady had a grandmother with great stuff …..and it slipped out of her grasp because if her mother and her aunt…..

I could happen to YOU! You have to talk to your Granny; learn about her stuff…..(there may be complete treasures there; my house is FULL of them!)

You may also love talking to your Granny….(Granny and Grandfathers are ignored often these days….it is completely sad.) My own Granny taught me more than I can even say.

Anyway; when she dies; just corner her basement and attic…..and make sure someone who knows values takes a peek at what is in those spaces……you might be greatly surprised!

If you want mid-century modern (gag me with a spoon); at least you can sell these other things at auction to people who will appreciate them for generations !!!!)

These spaces would fill me with enormous pleasure and a sense of discovery at every turn. The crowns! The books! The objets d’art at every turn and the delight in what is well-used and much appreciated.

    Fantastic!

I am also happy to hear someone else say that dusting isn’t their thing. (I’m a busy woman. Dust is VERY low on my priority list. Can I admit that here openly, please?)
