January 16, 2019 184 Comments

NOT every day this BLOGGER gets an EMAIL stating that A company wants to Give me A PAIR of glasses……………EYEWEAR!

In Fact, they wanted to give me TWO pairs one to keep and one to GIVE AWAY!

THAT company is called EYEBOBS!

TO SHOP THE COLLECTION click HERE!

I have been wearing their glasses for YEARS!

UNBEKNOWNST to them!!

ARE you ready for my FUN TALE?Well, it all started one day from this thing CALLED INSTAGRAM!A woman asked me if the glasses in my photo were EYEBOBS.I think I replied I did not know but would check and YES They were!

That woman’s CALL NAME on IG is I_MAGNIN.

Me being Me got curious and I asked if she was related to the SPECIALITY STORE that use to be based in San Francisco!

YES, was the response…….!!!!!

WE had a LOVELY BACK and FOURTH as I had to tell her I had worked for I. MAGNIN’s and JOSEPH MAGNIN’s years ago when I was a young thing majoring in FASHION MERCHANDISING!

In fact, I had just gone to MACY’s to VISIT the OLD POWER ROOM from I.MAGNIN’s DAYS!

IT was the MOST GLAMOROUS Bathroom I have ever been in.

When I went to the city from MARIN COUNTY with my MOTHER we would ALWAYS stop by the I. MAGNIN POWER ROOM!

BACK in THE DAY…….1960’s, 1970’s all our Doctors and Dentist’s were in the CITY!

450 SUTTER STREET and 490 POST STREET!

I FELT LIKE I HAD JUST MET A MOVIE STAR!

As she is A direct descendent of the I.MAGNIN FAMILY!

I Get to GIFT YOU NOW this pair of LIGHT PINK FRAMES with a POWER of 200 READING GLASSES!

If you leave a comment with a little BLURP to me your name will GO INTO A TOP HAT and perhaps I will have MISTER BANKSY tip the TOPHAT to FIND A WINNER!

I MUST SHARE with ANN ONE of MOST SPETACULAR pieces MY MOTHER bought on the FIRST FLOOR of I. MAGNIN’s in UNION SQUARE years ago!

This BEADED NECKLACE………I cherish to this DAY!

I also Own a sign that came from the THIRD FLOOR SALON, (I BELIEVE)that says GOWNS……….

I purchased at a FLEA MARKET and she told me she went to the LIQUIDATION SALE,which I knew about BUT COULDNOT BRING MYSELF TO GO!

TOO SAD FOR ME!

AT least they kept the POWDER ROOM in TACK and MACY’s expanded into the BUILDING and moved SIDEWAYS!

MAYBE I NEED TO GIFT THIS TO THE GREAT GRAND DAUGHTER OF THE FOUNDER?

I would LOVE for it to find it’s way HOME!

ANN ARE YOU READING HERE?

DO YOU KNOW THERE is A BOOK on THE STORE?

Well, I’m telling YOU there is and it is PINK just LIKE THE GLASSES!

IT was a BEAUTIFUL STORE and had a few branches as Far East as CHICAGO.As far NORTH as SEATTLE and of course in Southern California were I worked in the 1980’s!

I would ASSUME A LOT of YOU remember this JEWEL of a STORE?

The entire FACADE of the UNION SQUARE shop was white marble.

SHE WAS KNOW AS THE MARBLE LADY!

IN MY OPINION There is NOT a STORE TODAY that comes close to this WHITE MARBLE LADY!

SO, LEAVE ME A COMMENT and I will PUT YOUR NAME IN THE TOPHAT and let the WINNER KNOW on my NEXT POST who has WON! IT will be AN AGELESS STYLE POST!MY GUESS is MY VICTIM for JANUARY will remember MAGNIN’s and have a story or TWO to SHARE!

I can NOT THANK YOU ENOUGH for this valuable information!

I will be in TOUCH via EMAIL if the TESTS CONFIRM this DIAGNOSIS TODAY!

Just want you to know I emailed MY DOCTORESSA with this information!

She set up a phone call so we could CHAT!

From there she sent  me to CARDIOLOGY who sent me to NEUROLOGY who sent me back to MY MEDICAL DOCTOR to do THE TEST!

(SHAMEFUL NO?)

THIS WAS ALL ACCOMPLISHED IN ONE DAY!

MAYBE MY LUCK HAS TURNED!!!!!!!!

I just want TO SAY THANK YOU to ALL who left a comment on MY LAST POST with STORIES and INFORMATION for me to CONSUME!

TRUELY, this was THE BEST MEDICAL ADVISE I COULD RECEIVE and to know a few of YOU have the same thing was INCREDIBLE TO ME!

I WILL BE IN TOUCH IF I GET ANYWHERE TODAY WITH THIS DIAGNOSIS!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

IT HAS BEEN CONFIRMED I HAVE WHAT IS CALLED POTS.

POTS stands for postural tachycardia syndrome and is a disease characterized by the heart rate climbing 30 beats per minute or more when the patient stands, according to the Autonomic Disorders Consortium. This increase in heart rate comes with no major change in blood pressure.

Other symptoms of POTS include discomfort in the head and neck, visual changes, weakness or poor concentration over a period of at least six months. Beta-blockers or alpha-2 agonists are medicines used to treat the disorder. Other treatments include orthostatic exercise and drinking water, but no single treatment has proven completely effective.

Wow. I just met the nicest woman outside my yoga class who has POTS. I had never heard of it. She is going to several doctors, but also a “gut” doctor who has her on some herbs I can’t remember the name of. She has lost a lot of weight. It sounds so complicated. But I’m going to tell her about your blog when I see her at yoga next weeks. Even more hugs than last week. Never got to I. Magnin store since I live in NC, but it does sound lovely. We had one here called Montaldo’s that you would just SWOON in front of and especially inside. My Mom and I would go when we had VERY special occasions to attend. Unfortunately it is gone too. The memories are wonderful for me as I’m sure yours are for you.

YES! Know we caught the culprit…Mr. POTTS! This agitator must be thoroughly investigated and the appropriate correction administered. Knowing what you are dealing with is the most important turn of events in this long battle you have fighting. Thank heavens! On another note, I Magnin was where my parents bought me my first…and only…fur coat. It was in 1987 and I was working in downtown Chicago. It was a cold walk in the winter with the freezing winds blowing off the lake. My parents purchased a white fox fur coat and hat at I Magnin’s for my Christmas gift that year. I still have it. I was told I looked like Lara from the movie Dr. Zhivago. The coat has these football size shoulder pads and I stopped wearing it. I still wear the hat. It just had a week long spa treatment in the freezer…so should be nice and fluffy.

So glad to hear you are starting to identify and receive information about your symptoms. Now you can begin a treatment plan that will hopefully put things back in balance!
You look stunning in those pink Eyebobs! I have worn them for a few years and am always amazed at their quality and variety of styles. They are a great accessory addition, and the lens quality makes reading a breeze!
Will be thinking best thoughts for you as you move forward in wellness! ?

    Hello Elizabeth,
I remember I mangin and Joseph Magnins also! As a kid we went to the Walnut Creek and San Francisco I Magnin.
And when we visited my grandmother in San Mateo, if I remember correctly there was a J magnin that she would take us shopping for first day of school clothes and there was a kids only entrance with a slide that took you downstairs and adults couldn’t fit into it. It was magical! I don’t think I’m making that memory up!
    Hope all is well

I love the story of I MAGNIN’s and that necklace is totally gorgeous!!! A lovely piece and a sweet gift.
BTW I don’t want to be entered in the eyeglasses draw as I wear progressive lenses.

What a fascinating story to be found on Union Square! I always love these types of tales. They recount an era of days gone by, so rich in their history and the culture of the times. I spent many shopping days in that Macy’s during my days as a local in SF. That powder room is memorable!
I’m in love with everything pink and red for February, so please put my name in that hat!
And as for the your health diagnosis, let’s just say, I am so thankful.
As always, I am y-ur biggest fan!

I loved I Magnin too. I even modeled for them for a while. They had a really scary haughty fashion director whose name I cannot remember. What an elegant store.
As for the Eyebobs, they are darling but I require more magnification than that. I actually have ordered a custom pair from the Beverly Hills store who creates most of Oprah’s eyewear. I loved the round ones she wore for the Michelle Obama interview. I don’t look much like Oprah so hope they will also suit me.
Here’s to good health and good vision! ?

Love my fashionbable Eyebobs. Please put my name in the hat.
There was an I. Magnin in the mall close to my first job and apartment. It had the best dress and gown departments. I still remember the first fancy dress I bought there for a gala. It was deep turquoise blue – and much to my horror another woman had on the same dress – but fortunately she embellished her dress with a thick black beaded belt (which ruined it in my twenty-something opinion). Fond memories. How lucky for you to have worked at San Fran I. Magnin.

Did you know I went to Walnut Creek city hall to try and stop the demolition of their I Magnin store? An iconic white stone building with tall black framed windows and iron railings. I posted on IG. I have kept a Christmas shopping bag that has the store windows with wreaths in them.
Of course, pink #2 glasses are my jam! There have MY name all over them!

I worked at Magnin’s late 70’s into the 80’s. 10th floor. I was the resident interior designer …… got to oversee all the remodels and building of new stores. My wonderful boss was Malcolm Ross. We always had lunch every year after I retired with my children. One of the kindest men EVER. I got one of the cosmetic counter mirrors made of plexiglas in leaf shapes …… and I have a pink book! I loved that store!!! So many stories!
I also wear Eyebobs and love them…

    Dear Contessa,
My heart sings when I hear stories about I. Magnin. I worked at Flagship, Union Square 1978 to 1985, first in Lingerie sales. Then the Credit Department for a year followed by Advertising. I have lots of stories.

I read your writings because of Brenda Kinsel who introduced herself to my mother and me while looking at costume jewelry at Nordstrom around 20 years ago.

Love of Specialty Retail Stores runs in my family. Bergdorf Goodman, Frederick & Nelson and Liberty of London come to mind. And yes, Joseph Magnin as well.

I think we will meet one day. I live in Oakland and enjoy Andrea and Serriphin shop on College Avenue.

I lived in France (Nantes) my junior year at Santa Clara University. I loved seeing Italy, England and Spain in 1976. I am hoping to return to Paris one day. It has been too long– over 40 years.

Please add me to your eyeglass frame drawing. I wear glasses and am ripe for an update.

In gratitude for your inspiration and playfulness.

I Magnin… For a year I lived in Los Gatos and went to I Magnin every chance I got, which was about once a month. What a fabulous store! My stepfather was dear friends with the beautiful actress, Marjorie Lord. Remember her from Make Room for Daddy? Marjorie invited me to her home for lunch and I remember going to I Magnin to buy something smashing to wear. While I haven’t been diagnosed… or tested for POTS, it sounds a lot like what I’ve been suffering with. I’ve taken beta blockers since my late 20’s, but am still plagued by these episodes. BTW, my last stress test, a year ago, said I had the stats of a 28-year-old female, so I’m grateful for that. xoxox, Brenda

Oh, I and J Magnins! I worked at a brokerage firm in San Francisco back in 1960 and would not walk, but run on my lunch hour first to J. Magnin to try on shoes (they had the best shoes) and then to I. Magnin just to look at all the fabulous clothes and be calmed by all the beauty in that store. I was 20 at the time and I am sure you were not working there yet. The pink glasses are terrific so throw me into the hat! I am so glad you have an answer to your health dilemma and I am very interested in what path you choose to address it. Take care of your sweet self.

My mother used to model for I Magnin in La Jolla, Ca. They had the best dressing rooms and powder rooms! Our church was right across the street from the store. She would have my sister and I wait for her in the shoe dept. after catchecism class on Wednesdays. We were to find a seat and start our homework until she picked us up. Of course we didn’t! We would take the elevator up to the powder room and pretend we were fancy ladies out for a day of shopping and lunch, and were so tired that we had to stop for a rest! Then we would go down to the makeup dept and try on perfume. Every week we would pretend we were someone new.
Thanks for bringing that memory back! I am going to call my sister and reminisce!

So glad you finally have some answers about your health! Such a relief! Hope you feel better soon. Thank you for your Eyebobs giveaway! Your eyewear always looks so stylish. I grew up going to the I.Magnin in Palo Alto and SF with my mom. She told stories about shopping in SF with her sisters and friends. She also used to travel by TRAIN across what was the old Bay Bridge to shop at I Magnin in Oakland and J Magnin in Berkeley. The area near UC Berkeley/Shattuck Ave used to have nice shops. I cherish two sweaters my mom purchased back then. Love to hear stories of the Bay Area from years ago. Thanks for sharing yours.

THE TRAIN was BEFORE MY TIME but MY GRANNY use to take it to work! She wrote a column for the OAKLAND TRIBUNE!!!!!!!
      I can’t imagine J. MAGNIN’S being in BERKELEY!!!!!
ARE you still in the Bay Area?

Yes, I live in Oakland! The only transbay train I have known is BART. 🙂 The Tribune building is historical and preserved. JM used to be on Bancroft, just below College Ave! Seemed like a strange location, but I guess not in its heyday.

Wow – good catch on the diagnosis. Now maybe there will be medical CARE for a change.

Love the Eyebobs! And I just had my annual eye exam yesterday and found that my readers prescription has been upped from 175 to 200!

Even though I didn’t have an I. Magnin in my neck of the woods, it was one of my favorite stores when I went to the West Coast. My favorite clothes were their own branded items, and I kept a simple ivory (winter white?) mid-weight wool jacket for years. After the stores closed, I took a class on making a sewing pattern from a favorite piece of clothing just so I could clone that jacket, but sadly I wasn’t tailor enough to do that.

I would love a February “pick me up”. I think pink eyebobs should do the trick.

I love stores like that we used to have Sakowitz downtown here in Houston. The same feel and vibe and they had the best restaurant with little mini cinnamon served in their lunch bread basket. Ahhh was a wonderful thing!

Good luck on your medical issues.

Amanda, you reminded me of the happy days when I lived in Houston. I remember Sakowitz very clearly. I also recall how dressed up people were when working and shopping downtown. I worked at the Museum of Fine Arts and have such pleasant memories of my time in Texas so long ago.

Great news about the suspected cause of your health woes! I had a little google as I’d never heard of this – don’t strange things happen to we humans?

Don’t worry about adding me to the hat – I’m only 1 for reading glasses at this stage. I’d have to Grow Into Them!! But it’s a lovely story about your Eyebobs encounter!!

First of all, I’m happy that you’re slowly figuring out what your health problems are. Secondly, I. Magnin’s was the ultimate store in Los Angeles and Beverly Hills. I always felt like such a pauper in that store. I never touched anything. Way too elegant for me. But I loved it. Of course, my other favorite was Bullocks Wilshire. The Tea Room! Some how Barneys restaurant just doesn’t compare. You can’t go home again.

I do love your glasses, but I progressed from 2.0 many decades ago. I am a fan of Anne et Valentin (made in Toulouse), but now have frames from Traction Productions (made in the Jura of France). When you wear glasses every waking minute, the style really matters. Mine are -7.5 bifocals, and cost a small fortune just for the lenses. Having tried on all the frames, I am very jealous that you look good in everything.
Best of luck with the diagnosis. Thinking of you.
