FILOLI in WOODSIDE

September 18, 2017 85 Comments

WELCOME to FILOLI!!!

Would YOU BELIEVE this is the DOOR TO THE GARDENS?

Note the DOOR KNOCKER!!

This is what YOU SEE upon entering THE GARDENS in WOODSIDE, CALIFORNIA!

A LITTLE GRASS RESTORATION IN PROGRESS!

I definitely NEED These FLOWERS are these a type of DAHLIA?

I am OFF to MY NURSERY to find OUT and I have a GIFT CERTIFICATE burning a HOLE in my HAND BASKET!!!!!

I FOUND OUT!

They are Zinnias!

Too late for planting NOW!

This was STUNNING in PERSON………….how many 4″ pots do you think it took to plant this area?!

They were on both sides of me this is only ONE SIDE!

MY NEXT HOUSE!

If I have to MOVE into smaller quarters this is IT!

One ROOM with CHARM and FRENCH DOORS and LIGHT!

THIS WILL DO!

ARE YOU READING MISTER ITALIANO?

You SEE I DO STOP to SMELL the ROSES!

With MY BIRTHDAY HAT and a FRENCH BASKETEER PINK BASKET!

Do YOU know why I was HERE?

BECAUSE OF THIS GRAND DAME!

YOU SEE I have known PAT since moving to our town 23 years ago.

MY ITALIAN was HER daughters SOCCER COACH!

They were leaving for FLORENCE to live for a few months as her husband had a job awaiting HIM!

HE IS ONE SMART COOKIE and SO IS SHE!

PAT MATCHING THE GARDEN!

Her GARDENS have been on The CALIFORNIA NATIVE PLANT GARDEN TOUR A FEW TIMES!

I WAS THE GREETER!

OH, there is my FATHER and MOTHER’s DOUBLE CHIN coming into SIGHT!

THANK YOU PARENTS AS MOM ALWAYS SAID, “A LITTLE FAT MAKES YOU LOOK YOUNGER!”

I match the FLOWER STALK can’t think of the name but it is a BEAUTIFUL COLOR and who knew I would DRESS in the same color!!!!

Looks like they are preparing to plant for FALL!

I find this just BEAUTIFUL!

SO, PAT calls me one day as I am driving down the FREEWAY and asked me if I want to see THE EX- HEAD GARDENER from SISSINGHURST SPEAK at FILOLI?

(ALEXIS DATTA ~ HEAD GARDENER AT SISSINGHURST from 2004-2013 although she had been working there since 1991 the year I MOVED TO ITALY!)

DID YOU HEAR MY REPLY!!!!!!!!!!!!YES~ YES ~ YES!!!!!!AS I have just been there in MAY!

THIS WAS HER BIRTHDAY GIFT TO ME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

DOES PAT KNOW ME OR WHAT!!!!!!!

SHE GETS ME!

THANK YOU PAT!

There are TWO HUMMING BIRDS can you SEE them?

There were FIVE in TOTAL but this was my BEST ATTEMPT!

How GORGEOUS to watch them fly in and out for a sip of WATER!

Again there were FIVE DEER!

I could only capture these LADIES!

The OAKES surrounding FILOLI are massive we were guessing 300 years old at least!

THE MANSION AT FILOLI GARDENS.

Looks like they are doing a GREAT DIXTER THING here with the POTS outside the FRONT DOOR!

This was the house used in the opening TV SHOW for DYNASTY in the 1980’s!

Do you remember the CARRINGTON’s and ALL THAT went on THERE?!!

I remember going to a DYNASTY PARTY and dressing as ALEXIS……….BIG BLACK HAT,etc!

How FUNNY the HEAD GARDENER’s name is ALEXIS!

PAT’s hair matches the Spanish MOSS clinging to the tree!

She has GORGEOUS HAIR!

Good thing my BASKET was not a bit BIGGER!!!!!!!

Because I was alone with this CHILD and puppy for awhile!

ALL PORTRAIT SHOTS TAKEN ARE FOR MY INSTAGRAM BUDDY IN ENGLAND NICK OF PERIODPORTRAITS on INSTAGRAM!

FOLLOW HIM IF YOU LOVE THE OLD AND ANCIENT!

I was ZOOMING in on the CHANDELIERS but this room was painted a mint green and had painted SCENES on the walls.

A REAL BALLROOM!

Now, I have been LUSTING for a FIREPLACE like this for YEARS!

We actually had one this size when we lived in FLORENCE!

Let me SHOW YOU THE SIZE WITH ME IN THE PHOTO!

GOD, MY BIRTHDAY HAT EVEN MATCHES THE DECOR HERE!!!!!!!!

I have been LUSTING after these plant stands TOO ever since I saw them at VERSAILLES with my SONS at the PETITE TRIANON!

I would have a problem with placement as I have THAT ADORABLE PIGGY BANKSY who lives inside the CASA and likes to RUB his BODY from time to TIME on my FURNITURE!

I wouldNOT be HAPPY nor would HE as HE would have the FRIGHT OF HIS LIFE!

Have I told YOU he is  SCARRED of his own SHADOW??!!!!!!

DEN AREA………….THAT PAINTING!

I think A LOT of us would LIKE to be REMEMBERED THIS WAY!

I know PAT would and I AGREE!

CAN ANY Of YOU paint like this?

IS the PAINTING CROOKED OR IS IT ME!!!!!!

One of the LADIES of FILOLI!

They had the light shinning on HER hair and it was EXQUISITE!

JUST LIKE PATS!

HERE

you were to SEE the HYDRANGEA’s NOT US………..WE covered them UP!

SORRY ABOUT THAT!

They were REALLY TALL and SPECTACULAR!

I THINK I NEED A BIGGER CELL PHONE TO CAPTURE THE BEAUTY BEYOND ME!!!!!!

I have the BIG one NOW and LOVE it but I hear the NEW phones are costing ONE THOUSAND DOLLARS!

What do you think about THAT?

AS MY DEAR FRIEND PAT SAID,”What do they DO?Make my dinner for me!!!!!!!”

Now, I would NOT share this photo except it has a funny STORY and I love HER SMILE at ME!

I asked her for her photo with me and said,” PLEASE DONOT SPEAK as she was losing her voice speaking!”I told her I was just at SISSINGHURST in MAY and LOVED IT!She said to me weren’t you wearing a hat when you arrived?!!!I said YES!I guess I better put it ON and she liked the IDEA!I had taken it off so the people behind me could SEE!I LOVED THAT SHE SPIED ME UPON ENTERING THE GARDEN A FEW HOURS EARLIER!There you GO the CONTESSA was SPOTTED AGAIN!As you can see PAT SNAPPED THIS when I was SO SURPRISED she had seen me in my GREEN HAT!!!!!!!NOT THE BEST OF ME!

BUT I wanted to SHARE ALEXIS with YOU GARDENER’s OUT THERE!

THIS IS A BIT BETTER!

Our shirts a bit wrinkled and mine turned up trying to cover that BELLY!

Rena this photo goes up TOP under LA CONTESSA & FRIENDS!

HAVE YOU READERS EVER CRUISED THAT?

GO to HOME PAGE LOOK UP TOP!

YOU CAN ALSO SEE ME AT THE LOUVRE in PARIS WITH MY GORGEOUS SONS and a few CHICKENS under LA CONTESSA!

GOT THAT!

XX

Well, This picture I ADORE THANK YOU PAT for being my PAPARAZZI and TAKING me TO this WONDERFUL TALK ON SISSINGHURST!

DO NOTE the DIRT MARKS ON MY PANTS!THAT IS A LOVE SMACK FROM BANKSY my GRAND piggy before departing!

I did receive MANY COMPLIMENTS on MY BIRTHDAY HAT so THANK YOU PATRICIA………………..a different PAT!!!!

Better known in MY WORLD as AGENT 43!

SHE was married to a CIA AGENT years AGO and did not even KNOW IT!

SHHHHHHHHHHH*********

DON’T ASK it is A wonderful STORY but I should STOP here!

Lovely as usual! Filoli is one of my favorite spots and you go well with it’s surroundings. Love the hat. I think this is the most fun out with a friend. I always go to the Christmas program there. The shops are wonderful. Also there is a terrific garden spot nearby and Portola Kitchen one of my favorite restaurants! Hope you are enjoying fall. xo

Awnings are a good idea, Contessa, but all I can think of right now is they would be one more thing to take down in another hurricane! I think I may grow vines over the windows. That would be a quick solution for the house. The poor garden is another story.

But these problems pale in comparison to what others less fortunate are experiencing and I am keeping it in perspective.

    THANK YOU for understanding!

Lovely to see the gardens and you! SO fresh and happy!

We were in Greece (Chios) with hurricane Irma headed straight to us in Ft. Lauderdale, so the end of the trip was in shadows (but, Contessa, you will love it when you go to Greece, and please contact me because we’ve been 3 times and can offer suggestions). Long story short, we managed to get home (buying full price RT tickets) 48 hours before the storm, and managed to get boarded up & ready.

Our back yard is ruined. It was a shady haven and we lost 2 trees, with the other one severely hurt, and all the plants in the ground, despite being covered with branches to protect them from the merciless sun, are burned. And the western sun just cooks the back of our house now. Sorry to complain because I know others have suffered far worse, but seeing the lovely gardens just reminded me what we lost here.

Things grow quickly here in the subtropics, so we’ll plant more trees, but it’s sad to lose old friends.

What an extraordinary day you had out in such a beautiful house and garden.
I’m sure Alexis spoke fondly of Sissinghurst, but did she talk about life after THAT garden?
What brought her to the USA?
I have no doubt she was an interesting guest speaker.
I’m sure she saw the resemblance between you and Vita and I’m so pleased she commented on your hat.

    Good morning Elizabeth,

Another beautiful garden and a beautiful you! I love the outfit and the smudge from your grand pig. The minute I dress up to go somewhere my pups jump all aver me, usually when I am wearing white.

I greatly admire beautiful gardens because I do not have one and I have no green thumb. Speaking of gorgeous gardens, do you follow Joeseph Valentine on Instagram? He and his wife have created a beautiful garden in NH and it is featured with photos by Joe in Traditional Home this month.

    Have a great day!

Adore this post… but that is how I feel about each one. I am rereading The Secret Garden (having recently reread A Little Princess, one of my MOST favorites)… and it seems to me this is what you unfailingly bring your readers…a secret garden of color, beauty, humor, surprises, elegance… I suppose, most of all, what we feel is the love and joyousness of YOU. I was so reminded of TTS…Pat’s hair is the Duchess of Devonshire’s, Grand Mama’s favorite flower is a pink rose (and she always takes time to smell the roses), the fireplace is the one at Chadwick Manor that Alexandra can stand up in… I honestly expected to see my blue and gold macaw, Taco, in some exotic aviary at any moment. It is always so wonderful to tag along with you… a beautiful– and much needed– respite from the world’s turmoil and heartache … xoxo

What a lovely visit to Filoli you had! Filoli is one of my favorite places to visit in the Bay Area — right up there with the Legion of Honor. The gardens are so perfect, that even I — no whiz with a camera — can get stunning, beautifully composed shots! I love the way the fog rolls over the mountains in that spot. One of my dearest friends was a docent there. The training program is quite rigorous. I especially love your shot of the conservatory. I have a watercolor of that very structure, painted by a family friend who was an artist in residence there. It hangs over the fireplace in my bedroom and is one of the first things I see e

Hi Contessa! Filoli is celebrating its 100th birthday! That portrait of the lady with the lovely silver hair is Mrs Bourne, who with her husband William Bourne, built the house and began the gardens. The ballroom chandeliers and sconces have just recently been lovingly resored, the blue lights were there originally, and designed to simulate moonshine on the ceiling at night! The murals are depictions of Muckross in Ireland, which was the estate the Bournes purchased for their daughter Maude when she married and moved abroad with her English husband. Upon Maude’s death the house and property was deeded to Ireland and became the first National Park of Ireland. That beautiful gate to the garden was restored and reinstalled several months ago. The entire Filoli estate is full of history and wonderful stories. Docents give really informative tours of the house and the gardens. I hope you will visit again sometime when I am there to give you your wristband and welcome you. But just so you know, I have already claimed the garden house for myself. You will have to get your own!!

THANK YOU FOR THE HISTORY!WE were there late afternoon close to 5 and did talk with one of the docents but time was short!Maud died at an early age………
Just fascinates me that they would build this house in the MIDDLE of NO WHERE back then!I would assume groceries were delivered to the house? Was it Mrs. BOURNE who later in Life moved to WOODSIDE but came back daily for the GARDENS?I understand Family members are on the BOARD still! What a WONDERFUL LEGACY……….and a treat for us to visit.

What a perfect birthday present for you. What great stuff did you learn from the head gardener? I loved your Bryn Walker coat. You looked so snuggly and stylish. ( for a change) I adore Filoli. I’ve spent many hours there with the grandkids. It’s always fun wandering around and taking beautiful photographs of the grandkids among the tulips. What a surprise seeing the size of that fireplace. Loved that the head gardener wanted to see you in your beautiful hat. Were you the only one there in a hat? Of course, it’s not just a hat it’s a whole garden surprise on your head!

So as I was indulging on Neapolitan ice cream, (they said use ice chips but maybe I misheard as I came home with ice cream), I looked for a new blog from you e miracoli! c’era un viaggio in giardino, un viaggio scoperto! Non lo so perche l’Italiano non ha fatto un camino per te. Incredibile! I love this blog. Instantly, I no longer felt down or pain from the surgery. Thank you for meeting me at the door to introduce me to this incredibly beautiful California garden AND for introducing me to your friend and Alexis. You do know the most interesting people!!! The flower basket door knocker had me at, “Knock Knock!” What a dynamic entry.. or perhaps Dynasty would be a better description! I remember that series and LINDA Evans in these huge shoulder pads… I digress… The garden is so lovely and with those gorgeous California mountains and rolling hills in the background it is heavenly. What a friend Pat is to let you know about the former Sissinghurst gardener speaking that day… I am still trying to recover from the Sissinghurst Garden Tour. You looked like lovely rose in your softnpetal-like jacket and beautifully brimmed birthday hat! How perfect for this perfect day! I enjoyed the Zinnias and the hummingbirds… I saw them both! The fireplace is bigger than my closet… and it’s the most perfect stone/marble… Thank you for another magnificent garden tour!!! You are the Goddess of the Garden!!!!!!

You know that garden tours are my favorite…and this certainly did not disappoint! You look so fabulous in the matching (well, almost) colors in the garden. What a gorgeous place. Color is the key, isn’t it? To what? well, to almost anything! And Sissinghurst. Yes, well, anything will do in reference to that very very special place.

Bright sunshine and beautiful smiles complement the stunning grounds. What an entry door! Now that is something I would love to have!

What a beautiful day you spent Contessa. You really do, do GRAND things and these gardens and your birthday hat are all that! I think my favorite photo is of the den with the two yellow couches facing each other, I’d love to curl up there and have a cup of tea. You look wonderful my dear!!

Where to start? That you thoughtfully coordinated the colors of your outfit with the garden? The obvious loveliness of Pat? The great talents of Alexis? The jaw-dropping size of that fireplace (seriously, I figured it was a normal one until the shot with you in front of it).
Such places are as much works of art as any sculpture or painting. And they are never finished.
My hat (not nearly as wonderful as yours) is off to you, as well, for the daring combination of yellow with burgundy. It looks great. And even your shoes match!
As for phones, I pay €2 a month for unlimited calls and texts and have the cheapest model on the market. It meets my needs just fine. My priorities lie elsewhere.
