GARDEN SIGHTS

May 30, 2023 76 Comments

My long awaited post on my garden is not coming to FRUITION as I had hoped. WE have had odd unexpected weather and just GRAY DAYS! So, I decided to DON A GOWN from THE WARDROBE VAULT and open a HATBOX that has been closed for years! Found the MAGNOLIA branch on the ground and began to take photos!

THE THINGS WE DO TODAY.

TO ENTERTAIN OURSELVES AND OTHERS!

YES, I TAKE MY OWN PHOTOS……….BETTER THAT WAY. YOU CAN TAKE AS MANY AS YOU WANT AND DONOT HAVE THE ITALIAN OR SON SAYING HURRY UP!

I DELETE MORE THAN I KEEP.NOT EASY BEING THE STYLIST AND WARDROBE MISTRESS AND PHOTOGRAPHER………….

I AM POSITIVE A FEW OF YOU ARE SURPRISED BY THAT INFORMATION.

BUT IT IS TRUE.

THIS IS WHITE SWAN…….

NO FRAGRANCE BUT A BEAUTY.

THE GARDEN BLOOMS HERE ARE A TYPE OF YELLOW JASMINE.

I PLANTED YEARS AGO AND HAVE MOVED THREE TIMES.

IT STARTED OUT IN THE FRONT YARD.

NOT ENOUGH SUN THERE.

IT FINALLY FOUND ITS FOREVER HOME CLOSE TO MY BEDROOM AND AS YOU CAN SEE I HAVE A SECOND BED JUST IN CASE THE AFTERNOON NAP NEEDS TO BE OUTSIDE.

IT HAS FRAGRANCE! TONS OF FRAGRANCE!

MY ORIGINAL PLAN FOR THE GARDEN WAS TO HAVE ONLY FRAGRANT PLANTS!

THE ROSE NAME IS BOLERO HERE………EVERY YEAR I PURCHASE ONE MORE!

THE CLIMBER BEHIND ME IS NEW DAWN.

I THINK!

IT REALLY NEEDS MORE SUN BUT I’M LETTING IT STRUGGLE……….NEED TO CUT BACK THOSE GREEN LEAVES WHICH WILL KILL ME.

MAYBE I WILL.

MAYBE I WILL NOT!

I SHOULD HAVE INSISTED ON ONE OF THESE DURING MY LIFE TIME!

NOT IN MY GARDEN NOW, BUT FURTHER NORTH ALONG THE ROADSIDE!

I HAVE HAD LOTS OF TIME TO DWELL ON THE WHAT I DID AND THE WHAT I DID NOT DO…….in my life time so far.

THE WHAT I DID OUT WEIGHS; THE WHAT I DIDNOT DO!

I AM A PERSON THAT SHOULD HAVE HAD A MENAGERIE OF ANIMALS.

AS A CHILD MY FATHER BARELY LET ME HAVE A CAT.

I SO WANTED TO BE A VETERINARIAN GROWING UP, BUT SCIENCE WAS JUST NOT MY CALLING!

MY MOTHER WAS AN ANIMAL LOVER LIKE ME AND WE MANAGED TO SNEAK IN GUIENA PIGS, RABBITS, A ROOSTER, A HORSE AND THATS ABOUT IT!I DID GET TO TAKE CARE OF THE CLASSROOM RAT OVER A VACATION HOLIDAY!

I REMEMBER THAT WELL AS WE KEPT HIM IN MY CLOSET!

ARE YOU OUT THERE SHIRLEY NOAKES?

A WEEPING ROSE……..

I HAD NEVER HEARD THAT TERM BEFORE I MET A DIVINE GIRLFRIEND FROM SOUTH AFRICA.

THEY WERE HARD TO FIND THE YEAR I PURCHASED THIS ONE WHICH IS ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO.

SHE STANDS GUARD IN THE FRONT AS YOU WOULD ENTER…….MY ABODE.

SLIGHT FRAGRANCE.

AN ARTSY PHOTO of me in THAT HAT!

I like to think of it being an ICE CREAM CONE!

VINTAGE LUCITE AND NEW DAWN ROSE BELOW.

BASIL SEEDED BY THE ITALIAN FOR HIS PESTO.

WE MAKE PESTO FOR THE YEAR AND FREEZE IT.

THE CLIMBING HYDRANGEA I PLANTED YEARS AGO FINALLY GIVING ME MY MONEY’s WORTH!

I READ SOMEWHERE YEARS AGO IT TAKES SEVEN YEARS FOR IT TO BLOOM!

Well, it has bloomed in the past but not like this year and it has been close to TWO DECADES since I planted it!

SUNSHINE, FLOWERS and a CAFTAN in mid day……….PERFECTION!

ANOTHER MONTH HAS SWISHED BY………….I FROZE MOST OF MAY!

I NEED SUN IN MY LIFE.

IT MAKES SUCH A DIFFERENCE!

SEEMS TO BE A PROBLEM BOYS?

LEAVE IT TO THESE TWO TO CHECK THINGS OUT!

SPECIAL APPEARANCE BY THE ITALIAN AND YOUNGEST SON………..

TAKE CARE EVERYONE……………XXX

Speaking of gardens. I was at Costco recently and I noticed a Fiskars small (my size) loppers was on sale. I looked at it walked around, looked at it walked around and then I couldn’t contain myself and put it in the basket. Well, Bob started laughing. He said “I knew you you would want it.” Yesteday, I had the best time lopping off branches hat had gotten in the way of a blooming ???? and my rosemary. It worked so beautifully. You’d better be careful entering my garden I’ll lop off something on you. It’s so nice to have sharp tools.

Well this may be my favorite post so far! How lovely you and your roses are! Only you can rock that hat Elizabeth… I think I love the photo with your hair down the best.. I have never heard of a weeping rose! SO pretty. I am hoping to add more roses to my yard too. I only have a few and am really envious of those who have them.. This year especially, California roses seem to be having a heyday thanks to all the rain?

You and your garden look amazing despite a strange spring!
I wish things would grow as prolific and bountiful here in the southwest, but being at such altitude and so dry with rocky clay soil it is not to be.
Your caftans and accompanying hats are always pretty and delightful to view in such an amazing setting as your garden.
Due to my love of animals, I too wanted to be a veterinarian, but science was not my calling.
I was wondering if you were going to make pesto again. Do you have specific garden beds where you put all those basil starts? I make a bit of pesto in the fall from our couple of basil plants- yum!
The weeping rose at your front entrance is spectacular!

Amazing photography and your garden looks lovey … gray May and all. Where is the sun … we need sun. Just got back from walking the pups and my hands are frozen. I had to wrap them around my hot cocoa cup to thaw enough to get my fingers moving on the keyboard. I’ve never heard of a weeping rose either. So lovely. Hopefully June Gloom will come and go quickly and your garden will be even more spectacular. See you soon, dear Contessa. Ciao! xo

BEAUTIFUL! Both you, and your flowers! You’re so lucky to be tall, you wear those hats like a crown! I had no idea that roses could be so large and lush, almost peony-like, the Central Texas weather doesn’t really support roses. Yours are stunners!
I hope you feel better soon! (PS – with my heart and HBP issues I’ve taken Boiron ossilococcinum or Black Elderberry syrup for years. Both are antivirals (cold and flu) found in pharmacy. ). XO

Your garden is coming along beautifully, LA CONTESSA. The selfies of you are gorgeous. The one with the ‘ice cream cone’ hat is very stunning. Nice to see your men checking things out. Making sure the vehicle is SAFE. A baby cow, for a pet. Well, my husband had a calf for a pet when he was very young. He said they were hard to bond with. He grew up with a Border Collie that was his best friend and they are incredibly smart dogs. So I guess it was very apparent that the calf wasn’t nearly as intelligent as the dog. Ha. Well, he was cute though. Sounds like you did okay in the pet department during your childhood and of course, as you grew into the LA CONTESSA, you certainly have had many loving pets.

Lovely photos, hope being in the garden lifts your spirits! Do you know the name of the plant below the climbing hydrangea? Saw-tooth leaf edges, looks sort of exotic, grayish-green…I saw one up here in Salem, Oregon that survived our cooler temps but the owner didn’t know the name…haven’t seen them in the garden centres so far…

If that helps?i do know it gives a bloom and the APP SAID RED WHICH IS SO NOT ME!
I have only had it for a couple years and no bloom yet!
      It likes SHADE.
Once it blooms I would be happy to send you a photo.

How does your garden grow? With snips and snails and very green thumbs and sprinkled with love : ) Exquisite… the roses and the gardener! The artsy photo needs to be on the cover of Vogue. And once they find out you are the model, the stylist, the photog, the gardener, they will want to hire you!! I always wondered about the photos, but assumed the Italian was the photographer… that you are is amazing. The flower close-ups are swoon-worthy… wish the fragrance could be teleported too : ) Miss all the northern clime flowers so much…roses, lilacs, peonies, tulips, daffodils etc. We do have gorgeous gardenias in FL, but would trade them in a blink. I think you should dress ala artsy photo for Dr appt. : ) Then begin,., “About the caps. it’s my passion for living and sharing…” XOXO

Oh these photos are beautiful! My yard is mostly shade so I love seeing full sun successes and so smart to move things around. I need your husband’s recipe for pesto because mine is always so harsh – too garlicky or basily – does he use lemon basil? A mortar and pestle? Good luck with the doc. After being in remission for 8 years, a friend went to see a radiation oncologist after her PCP saw some annual test results. He told her to go back to her PCP with her questions – he would NOT answer her questions! and he’s known as a great oncologist! It is maddening. Thank you for your positive energy sharing your beautiful home with us – love the guys under the cars. All the new cars will probably soon make that obsolete. Ciao xoxo

your flowers and you, too! Don’t you just love this time of year, before things get brown and crispy?
I just had the entire property cleaned up, mowed, chopped, pruned, weeded. It looks so much better. My daughter’s beloved came while I was at my workshop and planted a bunch of lavender and other plants in the front, it was such a nice surprise and looks great. Can’t wait for everything to grow and flourish! I’m loving my potted roses on the back deck and always have a fresh bouquet at my desk and my kitchen windowsill. Ah spring!

I took notes, notes, notes on your plants. You have a green thumb for sure, what glorious flowers you have. I am so envious. Heaven, heaven to me. My garden is haphazard. Any place my former Beagle DUG a hole I put a plant. He and a midshipman from the Naval Academy seemed to be in a competition on who could dig a better hole in a nano second. My beagle won every time. It was so funny. Then when I did plant something he stole the tags, so I really have no idea what plants I have. I know so little about what is in the garden, so every year am delighted when things flower. But your place…mama mia. Truly heaven.

Love seeing your artsy photos in the garden with your beautiful caftans and that amazing hat! Your garden is so beautiful and it shows that with time and patience (and words of encouragement) the plants can thrive and show their true potential. The Bolero is a new one in my garden this year and it is so lovely – I can see why you add more each year. The white swan rhododendron is so pretty – my parents had one in their front yard but it was bright pink. They also had the biggest hydrangea plant you can imagine and I have never been able to keep one alive. Too hot where I’ve lived or not enough shade.

    Hi there CONTESSA

It’s always a feast for the eyes when one opens up your post! Such a colourful variety of pics and interesting tales to read.
You are a one man band as the saying goes – writer – stylist – photographer – set designer etc.
A joy it would be to be reclining on the bed and taking in all the sights/fragrances of your garden.
The hat – wow – you must get invited to a garden party!
Re the dr – look him in the eye and tell him the truth – why you used caps and that you were/are concerned with his response. (He’s probably forgotten what he said.)

    Hi Elizabeth!
So much to comment on. What beautiful photos, and taken by you- an added and impressive bonus! Your garden looks just wonderful- even photos of such beautiful roses can make my heart sing. I love your detailed descriptions as to fragrance, etc.
What an amazing hat that that is. Speaking of magnolias, it was my job to pick up magnolia leaves, flowers, etc off the lawn when I was a kid. I did it reluctantly.
That’s a lotta basil! So much wonderful pesto promise in those seedlings.
Love animals, like you. I grew up in an animal filled household, everything from cats to rats, horse. bunnies and the dog. Dad always said “no more!”, but then one time he came home with a replacement for my recently deceased bunny. I’m with you, a little farm would be the dream.
Favorite photo- your husband and son under the truck!
Sun is finally out down here in So. Cal. after days of clouds and temps topping out at 60 degrees.
Oh! p.s….my husband and I met through a mutual friend, she and my husband had worked together throughout his teen years at a veterinary practice, that won me over.
    Take Care! 🙂

MY ITALIAN and I worked together that is how we met!
I AGREE that was a GREAT SHOT of the “MEN” under the truck!
There are THREE more flats of BASIL to be planted from what you see here!It keeps us IN STOCK for the year…………..plus a few get SWIPED by the SON!
That was a good job for that AGE!
I remember I had a list of duties that hung on the refrigerator!I had to clean the ashes out of the FIREPLACE!!

Love all of your flowers. My sisters roses are bursting also. Those rains really made a difference. My sister is training roses to grow on old branches of trees she’s trimmed branches off. I can’t wait to see how they grow and bloom on the branches. Here’s a lot of optimism in Gardner’s. Just stunning. Can you show us how it began? Love seeing the Gardner’s imagination.

I will dig around for old photos………the land just dropped off to a dry creek bed.We brought in tons of dirt and built walls.THE ITALIAN had the vision not me!OH, and we took down TEN PINE Trees to make this happen which we used to heat the house for YEARS!
Roses in trees are beautiful…………but eventually the rose will kill the tree.Any vine in a tree not so good, but I would imagine she will cut back the roses so shouldn’t be a problem.TELL HER I WILL NEED A PHOTO!!!
      CAN IMAGINE IT ALREADY!!!XXX

Your roses are pure Bliss! I love when all the garden roses are in bloom…I wonder if you get black spot on your roses? We seem to here as we are near the ocean and the cool damp air settles on the leaves at night…roses love sunshine and warmth. (Just like me!!!)
Your garden must be an oasis of calm…that daybed is the perfect spot to recline and listen to the birds. I would take my tea outside and savour all that beauty.
    Take care Elizabeth.
    XO

Stunning blooms. Wishing for their scent.

Faint me a river……… your ICE CREAM CONE HAT.

Imagining scent of your kitchen while putting Basil to FREEZER.

Beautiful photos, you have an eye for capturing beauty!
My mother always had a beautiful yard, lilacs that smelled wonderful. And I remember a plant called bleeding hearts ?
Unfortunately I did not inherit her green thumb.

So good to see you out enjoying your beautiful garden! I’m fascinated with your “ice cream” hat! How is it that the fabric can drape and billow like that? Such fun! Xoxo

Hi Elizabeth, the yellow is called Carolina Jasmine! I am growing kiss me Kate & Eden roses; sadly it’s looking like I have to wait years to see any blooms! Can you believe I put in orange marigolds and one side all died. I cannot imagine why such a hardy flower easy to grow & all died! Your hat does look like your name ice cream. I love it but seldom eat it! I adore your garden! xo
