GREAT DIXTER an ENGLISH GARDEN

July 9, 2017 93 Comments

As you know I went ABROAD in the SPRING TIME to take in some WONDERFUL OLD GARDENS!

I think I will let YOU WANDER THE GROUNDS through my lens and take it ALL IN………..

I had NEVER heard of GREAT DIXTER before.

As we drove up the driveway I had tears in my eyes……….I had know idea what awaited me or WHY I was reacting that way!

CHRISTOPHER LLOYD’s house where he was born.

Great Dixter was the home of gardener and gardening writer Christopher Lloyd (1921-2006), who developed it into a hub of ideas and connections that spread out across the world. He loved Music and SIR PAUL Mc CARTHY was a good friend of HIS and GREAT DIXTER.He lives just down the road………in a small town called PEA……….something!!!!

As our Guide spoke this door OPENNED and two barking DACHSHUNDS came bouncing out at FULL SPEED! Behind them was the GARDENER with a tray of TEA.He was headed down to his office as he lives in this GRAND OLD HOUSE now that CHRISTOPHER LLOYD has passed.

FACTS ABOUT THIS BREED……….

The dachshund is a short-legged, long-bodied, hound-type dog breed. The standard size dachshund was developed to scent, chase, and flush out badgers and other burrow-dwelling animals.Must have been some thought put into the BREED for the GARDEN!
CHRISTOPHER, always had two of these DOGS and they were ALWAYS Named after PLANTS!
Today one is called MISS CONIFER.I missed out on the name of the other.
ANYONE KNOW?

The AMERICAN MEADOW he wanted to create with seeds brought back from the USA!

I like the petals MORE than the FLOWER HERE!

They look like EYES!

The BARN that houses the HOPS is from THE ELIZABETHAN TIMES.

As most of you are aware THAT is my name……..Elizabeth and as most of you are unaware I ALWAYS have HOPS hanging in my living room!!!!!!

I ADORE BARNS…………………just for your FYI!!!!

I WANTED TO RE-FURBISH ONE IN FLORENCE and MAKE THAT OUR HOME years ago but as you can see THAT DREAM NEVER came TRUE!

Here we have the GARDNER headed back to the house with the tray and empty cups!

There were TWO dogs one wasNOT leashed so he must have sprinted ahead!

NURSERY where you can purchase plants.

This house was not huge to begin with but was added on too over time.

The last addition being in 1910.

The compost PILE.

THAT RAY OF LIGHT???!!!!!!

There it is AGAIN!!!!!

I think CHRISTO was following me around the GARDEN in a form of a STREAK of LIGHT!

This was BEAUTIFUL………….a border of Highs and Lows.

These are stairs that were made in a circular fashion.

WORKS doesn’t it?

I would NEVER have thought of THAT!

Now, I want SOME!!!!

ME

looking oh so AMERICAN in my YUME CAFTAN from CYPRESS!

I only BUY the MEN’s style as they are long enough for me to wear without leggings.

YES!

This is a MAN’s PINK CAFTAN!

I always dressed my BOYS in PINK when they were small………..it is a VERY EUROPEAN Color did YOU know THAT?

A wall in the old chicken coop made with recycled roof tiles!!!!!!!

DON’T YOU LOVE IT?!!!!!!

Sunken Garden and The ELIZABETHAN BARN in the background.

They were BIG into POTS!

THE HOUSE of GREAT DIXTER where CHRISTOPHER Lloyd was born.

A project of re-thaching …………

Christo as HE was called was an ECCENTRIC MAN.

He wrote a monthly column for COUNTRY LIFE MAGAZINE for 39 years!

His Mother had all the BOYS do NEEDLEPOINT as children……………remember there was NO Television or internet back in the day!I of course, LOVED THIS as well………………his pillows and chair cushions still reside on the seats they were made for! Many were Flower motifs!

There was an old horse pond that was used back in THE DAY; for taking the swelling out of the horses ankles where CHRISTO would nap or take his TEA after a meal…………..he would listen to the visitors as he was half way hidden by the grasses and either invite them to SUPPER(HE was a VERY GOOD COOK!)or invite them to take some TEA with him on his blanket by the pond!Or engage in a conversation if HE didNOT like what he heard!!!!!

HE SOUNDS like a WONDERFUL ECCENTRIC MAN I would have been KEEN to meet!

I am currently reading EVERY BOOK I can get my hands on about GREAT DIXTER.

This book below is a GEM.

People who knew him in LIFE have written THEIR stories or memories to share.I ENJOYED THIS BOOK VERY MUCH.If you have been to GREAT DIXTER or are headed THAT way YOU may want to track down a copy of this book as it really gives you an insight into WHO HE WAS.

Now, that I have VIEWED these photos once AGAIN

I feel the NEED to get out THERE and F I X my Garden!

Wish me LUCK!

PERHAPS, I SHOULD CHANGE!!!!

Great Dixter house and it’s garden’s are beautiful ….. us Brit’s are so lucky to have zillions of old houses and gardens to visit ……. there are so many that we would never see them all. Every year, most villages open their gardens to the public as well so you can see grand country houses alongside ‘ normal’ sized gardens and can get such good ideas for our own gardens. I’m so pleased that you enjoyed your trip to the UK Elizabeth. XXXX

Dear Elizabeth, this was such a beautiful post. I loved your beautiful photos. You must have had such a blast on this trip. We are still in the US, one more week to go. I am not looking forward to going back to work. I have enjoyed shopping and visiting with family. I have also been eating too much and will need to get into a serious exercise schedule when we get back. Looking forward to reading more about your adventures.

    Dear Contessa,
These pictures of yours speak such volumes to the vision and creativity of the man, Christopher Lloyd. I am sitting in my garden right now reading and rereading this post. I must admit to having gotten caught up in the daydream of this lovely garden. The whimsy and the serenity of the English gardens always takes my breath away. Your photos are beautiful and that pink kaftan is super!
Hoping that your summer goes well. My mom is with us visiting from New York. Now that woman really knows how to garden! And she is 84 years young.
    Beautifully done Bella!

Looks marvelous. Andrew Denman, Candy Denman’s son here. I”m going to be in England for a few weeks coming up later this month, and I may have to check this out. I always enjoy a good English Garden. A friend of mine runs the arboretum at Castle Howard in Yorkshire, so I’ll be visiting there as well. The grounds are a sprawling Capability Brown design. By the way, in case you are still in the UK, I currently have art on display at the Nature in Art Museum in the Gloucestershire area. It’s England’s only wildlife art museum and worth a visit if you fancy a trip to the countryside.

So much to take in! Wonderful photos of everything! How cool is the recycling of the roof tiles into a wall – love that texture and concept. Also the US inspired meadow is quite beautiful too. I do love seeing men in pink. Vanessa from Sydney relpy on why we now dress boys in blue and girls in pink was fascinating and totally believable as Royals always influenced trends – just as Queen Victoria influenced brides by being the first to wear white. Gorgeous photo of you off to the garden wedding!

    Hi Elizabeth,

What glorious photos to wake up to in chilly Sydney! Thanks for giving me a beautiful floral morning…By the way, you were channelling an earlier era in dressing your boys in pink as it was only in the 20th century that the type-casting of pink-for-girls/blue-for-boys came about. Red and pink had been forever the traditional colours for boys – the colours of passion – while blue was cool and refined – think the Virgin Mary. The reason the colours swapped was apparently a quirk of fashion, started by a trend-setting royal in Britain who had a pre-prepared nursery for a new baby but the baby materialised as the wrong sex, but mama decided to use it all anyway. So the story goes!!

    All the best,
    Vanessa

I heard Fergus Garrett speak just a year ago and since then have wanted, even more, to go to Great Dixter! But I did get my fill of so many gorgeous English gardens in the Cotswolds. They are just out of this world, aren’t they? So glad you had SUCH a wonderful time. Did you find Chelsea crowded beyond belief? Everyone I met warned me that it has become just so crowded, every day. Did you feel that? hmmm. The Cotswolds were peacefully quiet but then we also had the heat wave happening. Hard to focus on the gardens when it is so hot and sunny! Loving all these pictures; they are really a treasure. Thanks for posting all of this!

What a delightful write up about Great Dixter. I particularly loved the shot of you in the meadow. It was nice to see that the gardens were not too manicured and there was a playfulness about the whole place. I’ve subscribed for the last 7 years to Country Life. I. WANT. YOUR. HAT.

I want your hat, the brooch, the shirt, the skirt, and your holiday in ENGLAND! Oh what a delight. English, French and Japanese gardens are my favorites, with well-maintained American gardens coming in last. What a joy to be in Britain to see where our culture really started. FABULOUS!

Thank you for greeting us before this fabulous tour in your magnificent hat with quarter moon brooch. You were a fabulous guide showing us through this Elizabethan home and hop embellished barn. The rays of light helped with its sunbeam finger to point out what we may have overlooked. The gardener with his tray of tea and small dachshunds seemed to be welcoming us as we made our way behind you on the path. Glorious flowers in pots, patches, sunken gardens, high low gardens and among the thatching. The American meadow made me nostalgic for all the American meadows I have that I strode across in my life. You looked more American in that meadow than the Statue of Liberty does in New York Harbor! The round steps…yes…you must include those in your garden. I had a lovely time in Dixter, today. Thank you for being my guide~

When Christopher Lloyd came to speak in Atlanta, I was a volunteer on the committee handling his trip. I was a volunteer for many years, it was a way to learn more, and I could not afford the symposium entry fee.

Yep, got to spend time with him. How wonderful I could NOT afford those entry fees. Met Rosemary Verey this way too.
    .
    And more.

Finally getting to Great Dixter, A THRILL.

Found one of Lloyd’s garden books on vacation in Florida at a used book store over a decade ago. It was a signed 1st edition. Love those type of life moments.

This garden is magnificent; I even love the sea of pots (and I’m usually anti-pots!). No wonder you had tears in your eyes, this is obviously a very special place to you. You fit right in! Let us know what else you find out when you delve into your Dixter books. I think I’ve studied every photo in your post at least five times. The placement of everything and the whole mood is magical.

On a side note, that hat is just magnificent on you! GORGEOUS! xx

All I could think of if I did what they had done how soon it all would be DEAD as I wouldn’t keep on top of the watering!IT DID LOOK GRAND HOWEVER in front of the front entrance.

THAT HAT I HAVE HAD FOR YEARS…………..added the pin so I could SEE!!!!!

I have one million pots. They are hard to keep watered; but I love them. Some belonged to the famous landscape designer Florence Yoch (google her) because my family bought her house! Many are from Impruneta! (If I had not watered them myself for the last 3 years, not one plant would be alive because my gardener was so dreadful. He would water for 1 minute these big pots…..that does not work.) My new gardener gets it….and I don’t have to water them any more! He is heaven! (when bubbles come up when you water; it means the soil is way too dry!)

Oh Elizabeth! Years and years ago….(the early 1980’s) I read that Bill Blass’s (I met him a few times and LOVED HIM!) favorite magazine was Country Life. So I subscribed! It is still my favorite magazine! And my favorite column was Christopher Lloyds’s column about Great Dixter! It was fantastic. The gardener’s name was Fergus! Was that who was there??? You are so right, he was a funny and eccentric man. He was friends with all the great landscape people and gardening experts all over! I can’t believe he died 11 years ago! I cried when he died!!!
I am thrilled you saw his garden! I wonder if there is a compiliation of his columns!

Christopher LLoyd left his house to Fergus! You simply have to get old issues of Country Life or read his columns somehow! I learned so much; that is why my property looks as it does (it cannot compare one iota with his; but I learned about nature and wild….and the beauty of “unkempt”!!
Subscribe NOW!! It is expensive, but it comes every week! It is full of wonderful things, same houses and estates that you saw in the front…..great articles….it is my favorite magazine! If you won’t subscribe, I am going to save them in a pile and make you come down here and get them every few months!
I was at a Bill Blass show at I. Magnin in San Francisco; and he took a liking to me…I bought a beautiful outfit….my daughter still has the gorgeous sweater top; the black satin skirt burned up in my fire in 1982! (with all of my clothes except coats in the coat closet, and sweaters in a chest!) He was them most charming delightful man. He invited me (along with a few other ladies who were already friends of his) for lunch! Whew!!! It was heady!!!
YOU MUST READ COUNTRY LIFE!!!! Listen to me!!! I am old!!!

    Good Morning Elizabeth,
Did you write this post just for me???………haha.
It has all just come flooding back, my visit, the joy that place gives me.
I know you were overwhelmed too.
    Great Dixter does that.
I do like all the pots by the front door.
Might try something like that here in Beaumaris……….they do need tender loving care.
I think I’ll order that book Elizabeth, as I have a feeling I’ll enjoy it.
Lastly, you in the wildflower garden………..amazing!!
Hope you’re having a happy Sunday, maybe in your garden, maybe lounging on your French day bed.

Another enjoyable post with beautiful photos – and I learned about Christopher Lloyd and Great Dixter

My sister loves dachshunds – she’s had four so far – all types – and she names them after military generals (like Rommel).

Once again in August I will be heading to Truro for book group. You said that your son is in CA this summer, but is Joey’s Food Truck still in business on Cape Cod, because I would like another delicious taco.

What a gorgeous garden! Beautiful photos. I love the aesthetic–not too rigid. All those old buildings are pretty easy on the eyes as well.
I had no idea there were men’s caftans, although of course I see men wearing similar garments all the time–they are immigrants from north Africa. Not usually in pink, though. Pink here seems to be a favorite of burly rugby players.
My favorite shot of you, though, is the last one, where you look as if you have stepped right out of “Mary Poppins,” on your way to a suffragette march.
