Lafayette’s Hen House
April 25, 2012 by Kellee
In a landmark building that once sold ice cream and cigarettes, is a lovely group of women that run the Hen House. Owner Elizabeth Kirkpatrick, a bay-area native (and former Gucci exec), has filled the space with beautiful housewares, children’s things, garden accessories, clothes, jewelry and gifts for over a decade. The cursive writing decorating the outside of the house, also graces each hang-tag with a thought, inspiration or perhaps a way to use an item that you hadn’t thought of (like the industrial size cupcake pan that would be great for organizing jewelry or crafts).
The hen greets you at the door, another special hand-drawn detail.
Described by one customer as “waves of wonderment” the house is chaotic yet enchanting – going through twice is a must!
I didn’t leave without a few items… bright and happy, this candy stripe fabric has inspired me to add color to Gideon’s room – I’m having his little armchair recovered in this fabulous material. And something for me; a beautiful pin with ribbons, violets and a crocheted flower – great on a blazer , dress or hooked onto my purse.
What a jewel, you’re sure to find a special detail for your home or self that won’t be found anywhere else.
