MORE of ROME…..

November 4, 2025 52 Comments

THE BASILICA OF SAN CLEMENTE IN ROME.

ACROSS THE STREET FROM OUR HOTEL.

FOUR LEVELS OF HISTORY!

ARE YOU READY TO GO DOWNSTAIRS?

IT WAS COOL DOWNSTAIRS COMPARED TO THE TEMPERATURES OUTSIDE!!

HOW ON EARTH DID THEY MAKE THIS?

NO POWER TOOLS!

TWO PERFECT PROFILES!

I LOVED THIS WALL………

GOT THAT?

4 th CENTURY!

Good thing it was HEAVY or it may have been in my BASKET BAG!

THE ITALIAN IN HIS CITY!

SO, COLOR COORDINATED!

I like the shape of THE BRICKS HERE.

LOW CEILINGS FOR A SHORTER POPULATION.

ITALIAN for those of you who want to PRACTICE!

I KNOW THERE ARE A FEW OF YOU WHO SPEAK!

THESE FRESCO’S WERE ALL COVERED UP.

MOSS IS GROWING FROM THE DAMPNESS AND WATER BELOW.

HERRINGBONE PATERN.

A PIECE OF THE ANCIENT FLOOR THAT ONCE WAS A HOME.

DO YOU LOVE THIS FLOOR FROM THE 4TH CENTURY?

THERE IS WATER RUNNING UNDERNEATH HERE…………I HAVE VIDEOS OF RUNNING WATER OUT OF THE WALLS BUT LACK THE KNOW HOW; TO INPUT INTO THE BLOG.

(Requires a YOU TUBE video, so I am told!)

DAMP DAMP DAMP SAYS THE GREEN STUFF………….

I BARELY FIT!

OLD PASSAGEWAY TO THE UNDERGROUND HOME IN ROME.

POTTERY FROM ANOTHER TIME………….

OLD VINTAGE FIAT 500 would look GREAT in my LIVING ROOM WITH MY ORANGE WALLS!

BATHS OF TRAJAN.DATES FROM 109AD.

ROMAN RUINS……………

Did you know the CYPRESS TREE means “WELCOME?”

I read that years ago, so I googled it to make sure I had that right. It has a few meanings but it does mean HOSPITALITY in ancient FRANCE the number of cypress trees planted near a farmhouse indicated the level of hospitality.THREE meant a place to rest.TWO meant food and drink and ONE meant the travelers should MOVE ON!!

OUR HOUSE HAD ONE CYPRESS TREE WHICH I LOVED BECAUSE IT REMINDED ME OF OUR TIME IN ITALY!THE ITALIAN TOOK IT DOWN RECENTLY, DUE TO FIRE CONCERNS HERE IN CALIFORNIA.IT WAS TO CLOSE TO THE HOUSE.

GUESS IT WAS THE CYPRESS’S TIME TO MOVE ON!

I WAS PISSED.

The ROMAN ARCH IS THE ARCH OF CONSTANTINE.

I BELIEVE!

IF I HAVE THAT WRONG LET ME KNOW IN THE COMMENTS AND I WILL FIX IT!

Do not ask me what those OCTAGON shapes are I have no idea!

THEY WERE THE CEILING AT ONE TIME IS MY IDEA.

MAYBE PAINTED OR TILED.

I think this is an AMAZING PHOTO if I do say so MYSELF!

LAYER UPON LAYER OF HISTORY HERE.

I think we can give credit FOR these shots TO THE ITALIAN.

I had to REST UP in OUR hotel for the day.

HE went out walking PRETENDING TO BE ME WITH THE PHONE!!

I FOUND THAT VERY AMUSING AND WAS HAPPY TO SEE OUR SURROUNDINGS!

QUIZ TIME………….The Italian is sitting in front of what ANCIENT building behind him?

Yes!We are dining on the street, which got a little scary for me!

As I could see the on coming cars,BUT WHAT A VIEW!

THE ITALIAN and the ….?

Note the woman on the vespa. WHERE DOES SHE THINK SHE IS GOING?

This was a FAMOUS ARTIST HOUSE back in the day and I cannot remember WHO!

DO YOU?

ABSOLUTELY GORGEOUS!

CIAO BELLA!

TWO ROMANS CATCHING UP………….over lunch.

AND THAT DEAR READERS IS THE END OF ROME!

I HAVE A FEW PHOTOS I WILL SHARE OF BUDAPEST LATER!

THINK FOR THE MOST PART YOU ALL HAVE ENJOYED THE PHOTOS OF OUR TRIP AND THOSE WHO DIDNOT LET ME KNOW BY UNSUBSCRIBING TO THE BLOG!!

SORRY, IF I CANNOT PLEASE ALL.

TODAY, I AM OFF TO THE HOSPITAL TO GET A RECLAST INFUSION FOR MY BONES.IT LASTS ABOUT AN HOUR AND I GET IT ONCE A YEAR.THIS WILL BE MY FOURTH YEAR.NORMALLY,THEY DO IT FOR THREE YEARS THEN STOP FOR AWHILE,BUT FOR ME WHO NOW HAS TWO FRACTURED BONES IN MY BODY; MY L-1 AND MY SEVENTH RIB THEY HAVE DECIDED TO CONTINUE!

I HAD NO IDEA THESE WERE BROKEN AS THERE WAS NO PAIN!

THEY BELIEVE I DID IT FROM COUGHING!

I DO HAVE PAIN UNDER THE LEFT BREAST, WHICH THEY SAY CANNOT BE THE RIB AS THEY CAN TELL FROM THE X-RAY IT IS AN OLD FRACTURE!

GO FIGURE.

I DO HAVE OSTEOPOROSIS AND HAVE HAD FOR YEARS…………

OBVIOUSLY, THE “RECLAST” DIDNOT WORK THESE LAST THREE YEARS; BUT MAYBE IT DID AS THE FRACTURES COULD HAVE BEEN MUCH WORSE!

HAS ANYONE EXPERIENCED SOMETHING SIMILAR AND WOULD YOU BE ABLE TO SHARE WITH US IN THE COMMENTS?

AS ALWAYS I APPRECIATE YOU AND YOUR THOUGHTS.

BE WELL AND FIND JOY IN THE LITTLE THINGS!

MY OBSESSION THESE DAYS ARE CHOCOLATE COVERED RAISINS!

    Hi there Contessa
I’ve been an armchair traveller during your recent blogs. So enjoyed reading about your travels and the pics have so much beautiful detail = magnificent!
    Thanks for sharing.
The Italian could be a tour guide/planner – he did such a good job planning this memorable trip.
People unsubscribed – how ridiculous in my opinion! Your blogs are always varied – fab pics and connect your readers – always enjoy reading their comments and your replies.

I enjoy your travel posts, partly because I don’t care to go to Europe again, but it certainly is beautiful , as are your photos, and I enjoy the places vicariously.
I’ve never been to Rome, but liked Budapest and look forward to your impressions.

Adore all… a place I would love to go but probably won’t… the history is overwhelming. The subterranean photos and the layers of architecture above ground are amazing to study –what they were capable of building and sculpting so long ago. It is astonishing… incomprehensible really. You are an inspiration to keep on going and doing… aging is not fun, but having the right perspective helps so much. Feeling sad the travelogue is ending, have loved every post : ) XO

Thank You for your love and always cheering me on!Rome is just a short flight from London hint hint!Maybe you can squeeze it in!You seem to have a ton of energy to me!Plus the people are SO FRIENDLY AND KIND!Most speak a-little English too so you can communicate!
Every Day I seem to have MORE HUMOR about this aging stuff!
Yesterday the receptionist at my dentist office hung up on me!! I go in today. I haven’t quite decided my stance on everything.!!The nurse who gave me RECLAST injection told me to check with my dentist regarding cleaning and no deep cleaning! Anyway, she couldn’t be bothered to give him that message and to get back to me later in the day as I so kindly asked, she told me to send her an email and she would forward it to him I told her I don’t want to send an email. I just want to know if I should cancel my appointment for cleaning or keep it. STAY TUNED!!!!!!!

Love seeing ALL of your photos, from a vacation trip or just around your house and garden! We have been to Rome a number of times, the most memorable in 2018. Our Alaskan priest was studying Canon Law there and gave us the most wonderful tour of San Clemente, Santa Maria Maggiore e Saint John Lateran. He has the most amazing brain and retains everything! He has spent years studying in Rome, beginning with seminary and is fluent in Italian. It was an absolute treasured time with him there. Prayers for a positive health outcome. I am soooo glad you and the Italian were able to take this amazing trip! God is good.

had 6 fractured ribs, and cracks in my pelvis, but I did

Hello Contessa, Who could ever get tired of seeing your pictures form Rome? Those layered ruins, those brick-paved floors, and imagine when they were building those walls all those carved fragments were scattered around just for picking up! Not to mention those great photos of you and the Italian having a good time. I cannot imagine anyone unsubscribing over vacation pictures. There is nothing ideological about them, and if someone doesn’t enjoy them, in a couple of weeks you will be writing about something else interesting.

Hi Contessa, thank you for sharing the wonderful photos of your trip. I’m so glad you were able to travel!

I hope the Reclast helps your osteoporosis. I’ve had osteoporosis for over 30 years, but since taking Fosamax for a few months several years ago, I’ve refused treatment. I’m hoping that choice doesn’t come back to haunt me! I have a mild compression fracture in my thoracic spine, and I hope it doesn’t become worse. Fortunately, I’ve found an acupuncturist who seems to know exactly where to put the needles to relieve my pain when I’ve done something I shouldn’t have.

I enjoy your blog, and thanks again for sharing your trip with us!

Acupuncturist are great. I was just thinking about mine yesterday I haven’t been to him in years, but he did help me in the beginning when I didn’t know what was going on with my atlas. Gosh, 30 years seems a long time but that’s good news. I think I’m going on about 10 years and I always drank so much milk even as an adult. I never understood it anyway I don’t have any pain from my fractures which I find weird nor did I have a big fall. A year ago I fell in my kitchen forwards and dinged up my knees, pretty bad, but that was it and my toes were black and blue. as I landed on my brick floor.
The Fosamax I’ve heard horror stories about so you probably did the right thing. Let’s just keep hanging in there.!

We planned to place two small cypresses in large terracotta planters, for either side of the front door of our house in the South of France. Being so narrow and vertical, we felt they wouldn’t interfere with going in and out of the door. But when we mentioned our intent to a neighbor she was horrified, telling us cypresses were for cemeteries, that they represented death! Quickly changing gears, we chose two olive trees instead. They required annual trimming to keep them from blocking the doorway, but it was fun to see little olives appearing each spring.

I hope your infusion is painless, works well and gives your bones the support they need. You looks fabulous in the photos – your skin is glowing. I love that you two color-coordinated, it’s a great color on both of you, and it suits a Roman Holiday perfectly! Hello Contessa, ive just read your blog and enjoyed your photos including the one of your Italian and the COLLISEUM! We were in Rome last February/March. It was great to be back apart from the staggering amount of tourists.

You both look really well in these photos and so happy to be back home.

Your photos are great, especially the lead shot/layered one.

How wonderful the food is in Rome, especially the Carciofi ?????. You should have included photos of what you ate!!!

Hope your infusion etc goes well. Something is clearly working because you look fabulous!

Ciao Bella e mille Grazie! xxx
