MY FIRST COMPLAINT!!!

January 20, 2015 125 Comments

IMG_7243

NOT MY FIRST person to UN~SUBSCRIBE  to VINTAGE HEN HOUSE as I get that on almost EVERY POST I DO………BUT my first e~mail telling me that MY CAPS and EXCLAMATION MARKS are bothersome………….

HERE YOU GO from the source HERSELF!I received this e~mail about two weeks ago.

“I enjoy your blog but unsubscribed as I find the language use so bizarre as to be a complete distraction. Is there some rationale/purpose/method to the punctuation and capitalization?”

In my response I did say I write the way I TALK, so if you know me YOU MOST LIKELY GET IT!Or as my dear friend JAN said, “I CAN HEAR YOU SPEAKING WHEN I READ YOUR BLOG!”

If YOUR My BLOGGING buddy PENELOPE BIANCHI  the response was this:

It is purely a REFLECTION of your PERSONALITY!!!

She is trying to make you FIT INTO A BOX of her making!(frankly….it is hard to do those caps and stuff)I couldn’t do it;but it truly does…..(do you agree? If not, don’t say it!)(I know you wouldn’t!!!!)

I hope you will post it just like I said using your caps the way you do…..and NEVER NEVER NEVER stop writing the way YOU DO!

WE LOVE YOU

IT IS you!

No, one can imitate you!I cap all the wrong things…….You are the master of the caps and exclamation points……how sad for her.

XXOO

PENNY

I recently was mentioned on a BLOG called HAVE SOME DECORUM and one of ELEANOR’s commentors EXPLAINED me PERFECTLY!

Let me see if I can COPY & PASTE that here for you to see!

“And lastly, Contessa’s selective CAPS mystified me until I read her blog. Now I understand it as an exuberant act of emphasis and love how lighthearted it is. It’s like talking with some carefree woman at a party after she’s had 1/2 glass too much rosé. It’s nice to read a voice in a blog that’s not trying to be anything other than ITSELF :)”
I was so touched by this as this is from a MAN I have never met,but who understands me perfectly!
SO, do my CAPS Bother YOU?
Should I STOP at one exclamation point or give the REAL meaning of what I am saying with a FEW more?
MY DEAR FRIEND ELEANOR had this to say…………..

Side note: you may know my friend Elizabeth as La Contessa. My friend RJ calls her “All CAPS Contessa” as she distinguishes her writing with perfectly placed capitalization that I love. I have to tell you, this woman is quite remarkable. She is quirky, kind, generous, loving, interesting, forthcoming, a true friend, and is an absolutely magically unique woman. She has a charming blog that you all should check out:

THANKS RJ………….you made MY DAY as well.

As for MADAME ELEANOR sitting over YONDER in PARIS……………..I CANNOT THANK YOU enough!I had over 4065 people PEEKING at MY BLOG because of YOU!!!!!!

YOU HAVE quite THE FOLLOWING!!!!!!!

AS for MADAME PENELOPE……….who came to MY rescue when I wasNOT certain how to respond to this query.Well, let me tell you…………….

Penelope is a FORCE……….she LOVES to comment on BLOGS and has VERY GOOD TASTE!

She lives in a REAL HOUSE!(NOT TO BIG!)
A house she had built and decorated on HER OWN.
She is a DECORATOR EXTORDINAIRE!
Her Home has BEAUTIFUL things but is LIVED IN!
It is NOT UN~TOUCHABLE……………it is REAL.
She reminds ME of MYSELF in so MANY ways.
We both have chickens, dogs and cats.
Married ITALIAN MEN.
Have DEFINATE IDEAS On the way THINGS need TO BE!
She adores FESTIVITY CROWNS…….and if YOU GOOGLE FESTIVITY CROWNS she POPS UP!
We both wear our CROWNS out in PUBLIC!
I could go ON and ON about PENELOPE but why don’t YOU pop over to her site and say HELLO.
Her Blog has been recently RE~VAMPED by a techy genius’s  so saunder over and take a PEEK.
Do say THE VINTAGE CONTESSA sent you……..as that will be my NEW NAME for the NEW YEAR!
Click Here FOR PENELOPE’s BLOG………check out the DUCK POND!
I am VINTAGE 55 this year and since LA CONTESSA was taken by a shop back EAST I decided this WILL DO!I will be changing my BLOG SITE to READ:THE VINTAGE CONTESSA, so if that lands in YOUR inbox just know it is I  with a NEW NAME but still VERY much ME!
The VINTAGE HEN HOUSE is retiring……………since I closed the shop almost TWO YEARS AGO I thought it was time to LET GO!
I hope YOU will continue to FOLLOW me and my EXCLAMATION points!!!!

VIA A LOVELY EMAIL WITH A PHOTO THAT I CANNOT GET TO APPEAR!!!TRUST ME THIS MADE MY DAY!

Well!!!! I had considered writing you to tell you of the effect your CAPS are having on my life so clearly the time has come.

I also use caps. Not as much as you :), but I find they are Most Useful. Over the last couple of years I’ve come across people (not anyone I know, fortunately) commenting that they really don’t like caps and they take it as someone screaming at them. I never thought of it like that because it’s all in how you use them. However, I think I did tone them down just a bit so as not to offend.

Recently my husband was promoted. He is no longer in charge of one restaurant but now he oversees three and sometimes 6 so he is not able to have direct communication with the employees all the time and he depends a lot on emails in which he sometimes uses CAPS to emphasize important things. Just before the holidays he was told that his use of caps was offending some people and was asked to Tone It Down.

That provoked some lengthy discussion between us about the use, or not, of CAPS while we were at our annual Christmas Eve dinner at Balthazar in NYC having a fine time stuffing ourselves with the most succulent oysters and a bottle of champagne. I contributed my feelings on the matter as he did his plus I told him about your writing style and the exuberance and humor it expresses and how it always leaves me feeling plumped up, lighter in spirit. After some consideration we agreed then and there that we didn’t want to live in the flat grey world of monotone communication and that we want to live with gusto and joie de vivre (“Toujours Gai” has always been our motto), and so we wrote out our new MANIFESTO right there on the paper tablecloth – that from now on we are going to be PEOPLE WHO LIVE IN CAPITOL LETTERS!!!!!!! We ripped it off the table as we left, took it home and posted it on our refrigerator.

    Amitiés, Lindy NYC

P.S. 1: I definitely HEAR YOU when you write. I GET IT and I’m obviously not the only one. You are a blazing star on a brilliant trajectory. It would seem that’s too much for some people. Pay no mind.

P.S. 2: I read Ellie’s column (thanks to you) and love it and loved the reference to you as All CAPS Contessa.

P.S. 3: That’s our dog Harry as a pup on the fridge.

    P.S. 4: DON”T CHANGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. 5: Of course you can use any of this however you like.

You introduced me to Ellie. So you can do no wrong. At first I was confused by your blog but then I saw it as an extension of who you are. So “You GO Girl!” Be who ever you are. We’re all here to enjoy your exuberance, dash and style.

PS. If Suzanna would like some help with how to start a blog I would certainly give any help I can.

Your first compliant? That should tell you something. You touch a cord with people…people who are kind and creative. Those criticisms can be so hurtful if you let it be. Good for you, speaking out and getting the confirmation you have! If people were all the same, imagine how boring it would be.
When I first started to read you I was surprised by the time you were taking to use the caps and exclamation points. I had always read that typing in all caps was yelling in print. Then I met you and realized it’s your zest for life and how you express exuberance.
Your joy and feeling shines through in an honest way that many blogs don’t have.
You are an original. What could be better than that? Nothing.
    Have a great week!

I came to your blog via Corey Amaro. WOW, was my thought, is this lady ever flamboyant!!! Synonyms for flamboyant are exuberant, confident, lively, animated, vibrant, vivacious. And your script relays that. Let’s hear it for differences and variety. And those adjectives are so upbeat and light. Blogs have opened up the world to the variety in the world. We will probably never meet but thanks to your sharing my life has been enlarged to a world I would have not had access to. So keep on sharing. I for one am very thankful you do!!

I LOVE to think of you at Giverny. Your words are like flowers- some tiny, delicate and fragrant; others, BIG and BOLD; but each lovely in their own way.

Who amongst us has not sneaked a photo here and there, even without STRICT permission? Ask your guest about this!

As for the Ducati- I am happy to have raised a strong, smart and fully self-actualized person. If she wants to go, I will happily look forward to hearing all about it. (be that as it may, a photo of this activity would NOT go un-wanted) 🙂

Understand you completely, deeply, intuitively. From the 1st sentence.

The ‘complaint’? Alas, those people are like plants in my garden. I choose the plants in my garden and the people in my life. Think any of my plants EVER complain? Not in my realm. They perform, make me & others happy, enrich the earth & me & others and so very dearly much more.

Knew you were in my realm at the first blog post. How couldn’t the Duchess of Hambrick know this? Terrible language but you KNOW what I’m trying to say.

If a plant does not pay the rent in my garden, it’s gone. Always more joy to be found. Always.

    You go Contessa.

It seems to happen to all bloggers at some time or another…I know the first time I received a nasty comment I was surprised and hurt but I figured out pretty quickly that some people are NEVER happy and they thrive on trying to drag others into their toxic web….

Keep on writing and I owe you big time for introducing me to Ellie at Have Some Decorum.

It’s always hurtful to be criticized.
it’s much easier if a blog reader just fades away quietly, and keeps their personal upsets to themselves. If she (or he), was a happy person, they wouldn’t have wanted to be hurtful or controlling.

Well, we love you and your exclamation marks! Now I’ve never met you but somehow, the exclamation marks and caps make me hear you speak. And thanks for clearing up that misunderstanding I had about the snake. Phew, I was wondering how on earth you could put up with such a creature. Now I am sure snakes are wonderful animals in their own right but I just can’t abide them. Give me rabbits and dogs any day.

I never give an audience to complaints. Life is much to short. I prefer to use my energy celebrating life with like minded individuals. You have too much zest for life and love to share … to be bothered giving time to this.

You are much loved … simply … because of your tremendous exuberance for life. Keep on being you my friend. No one thrives living in a box of sameness.

Elizabeth, someone stops following you because of punctuation?
I don’t understand why someone would be bothered to write to you about this.
Why can’t these people just fade out quietly, show a little decorum……hmmmm, don’t comprehend this behaviour.
See, I am one person who likes the caps and the exclamations.
I’ll share a secret with you………..I have appalling eye-sight….he he.
Going to look at Penelope’s blog now.
Forget about all this sweetpea……….you’re fabulous, you write with style and that’s why we all love you so.

When I first started reading blogs, YOUR’S was the one I kept coming back to; BECAUSE of the all the caps and exclamation points! I could tell that you obviously had MUCH personality and lived life aloud. You type your stories in the same manner that you tell your stories. Excitedly and exuberantly! I love that you are confident enough have to have little regard for the grammar police (I’m always amazed at those that are so free to criticize).
Your joie de vivre pops off the page. Due to your contagious, bold happiness, I have a new friend.
    Go Elizabeth!

    Much love,

Dear Elizabeth, I also was taken aback by all the Caps you use, that is, until I read your Blog several times. Years ago when first starting to use email, we were told NEVER to use all Caps because it was like shouting. NOW I GET IT. Your exuberance is just as delightful as the topics on your Blog. If you weren’t so classy and so interesting, it might not work. But…it does work! While searching for your site (thanks to Andrea from The French Basketeer) I stumbled upon a “Vintage Hen House” somewhere on the East Coast. Definitely NOT your site. Glad you have cleared that up with your new name. It is so much more representative of YOU.

    À bientôt, Charlotte Des Fleurs

Bonjour Elizabeth, I understand in cyber world caps mean emphasis, I often use them. For me blogs are sharing, supportive, fun, new ideas, connecting globally, inspiration, passing along the love, creativity..”sweating the small stuff” like someone using caps is low on my totem pole. These things happen in a world of many personalties. With ALL the blogs available, I am sure this person can fish other blogs. I have been “missing in action”, been really sick with bronchitis for 15 days starting New Years, now my computer, I named Jack, is in repairs, responding on this cellphone is not the greatest while packing and moving. I behind checking on you & Ellie,Vicki, along with my others FAVS! ! ! I am so looking forward to your new blog. I want to start a blog, but have no clue how. Would you share with me a start tip? I have my idea it’s the technical start that I need. I would love that. XOXO

      Hi there from Florence,
As a professional writer I must say I did notice the CAPS, as when we write CAPS means someone’s speaking loudly – or yelling!
So I kind of raise my mental voice whenever I read your Blogs and just imagined that was what you were like.
Someone got stuck into me once for excessive CAPS usage. Go for it. Stuff the critics!
      CAPS away,
      Lisa
