OH CHRISTMAS TREE!!!!!!!

December 10, 2018 127 Comments

WE started the Month off on DECEMBER 1,2018

with a BEAUTIFUL DINNER given by THE GARDEN CLUB at THE OLD ORINDA COUNTRY CLUB.

MY SON, brought us the TREE from his LAND up NORTH!

I think it’s THE MOST BEAUTIFUL TREE we HAVE ever had!

This year it landed in THE KITCHEN as that is where THE ITALIAN put in the TALLEST CEILINGS!

You see WE didNOT want to cut the TREE!

THREE FEET had TO BE REMOVED TO FIT!

Next Up was a TEA PARTY at a Home where ME and THE FABULOUS SHARI had to make the ARRANGEMENT for the DINING ROOM TABLE!

Lets PEEK at THAT TABLE!!

SHALL WE?

This would be GRAND CENTRAL for THE TEA PARTY!

I was going for The POWDER ROOM but MY BUDDY SAID THIS ROOM!!!!

I meekly said, “OKAY!”

Those of you from CALIFORNIA will remember LONGS DRUGS?

This was the FAMILY’s ESTATE years ago.

SO, I got THE IDEA from my favorite PAST TIME!

INSTAGRAM!

MY MOUTH DROPPED OPEN and STAYED THERE for SECONDS!

BY the way this is THE ACCOUNT of SERENA CRAWFORD  who was FEATURED on AGELESS STYLE HERE on Cindy’s BLOG a couple of months ago!

If YOU MISSED IT CLICK HERE!!

SHE does a FABULOUS INSTAGRAM PAGE!!!!

YOU CAN TRAVEL THE WORLD WITH HER in the COMFORT of your own HOME!

Ps. SHE KNOWS PEOPLE I KNOW IN South Africa!

HOW COOL IS THAT??

SO THIS IS HOW THE DINING TABLE THEME came to FRUITION!

IS YOUR MOUTH A GAPING?

WE HAD SO MUCH FUN OUTSIDE in THE BRISK SUNSHINE!

OUR FINISHED VESSELS for VEGTABLES!

SHALL WE TAKE A BOW?

 ONWARD TO RED FRUIT VESSELS!!!!

With a TOUCH of GREEN!

NOT DONE YET!

JUST HAD TO STOP AND ADMIRE MY HANDY WORK!

THE BEST COMPLIMENT was from SHARI’S HUSBAND THE DON………. as SHE CALLS HIM!

“IT LOOKS LIKE A DUTCH STILL LIFE PAINTING!”

                                                                                                              THE DON

I’m SUPER PLEASED!

((((CAN YOU TELL!))))

THE MOUNTAIN in the distance is MOUNT DIABLO for YOU Bay Area BUFFS!

This is SHARI’s VIEW from HER HOUSE with THAT DON!

SHALL WE ENTER THE TEA PARTY?

ENTRY TABLE!

MY NEW FRIEND KATIE from GARDEN CLUB’s FLOWER VESSEL & BOUQUET in the FAMILY ROOM!

ANOTHER PRETTY CREATION!

I think this was in THE MUSIC ROOM!

THE MAIN SALON!

There were TWO of these!

OH SANTA!

DINING TABLE!

YOURS TRUELY and SHARi’s CREATIONS TOOK CENTER STAGE!

THEY SHOULD HAVE BEEN BIGGER!!

BUT they are HARD TO TRANSPORT as they are HEAVY!!!!!!!

NO WATER BUT those VEGGIES HAVE WEIGHT!!!!!!

Who KNEW LOW CALORIE GOOD FOOD for YOU has a WEIGHT PROBLEM in TRANSPORT!

If one was to make on LOCATION it could have been BIGGER!

I think I will do ONE for MY HOME every WEEK!

I can PLUCK my vegetables as NEEDED as the week PROGRESSES!

TEA PARTY SCENE!

LOTS of TREATS to MUNCH ON!

I had my DOUGH made the day before but left it in THE FREEZER TOO LONG!

So, at 6 AM the MORNING of THE TEA I started again from SCRATCH as I wanted to make these sugar cookies with POMEGRANATE DRESSING!

I READ ABOUT HERE ON CLAUDIA’s BLOG called GOURMET PROJECT.

 MY COOKIES!

I had a bit of difficulty with the cookie cutter so made BLOBS!

They cooked TOO BIG!

AS I’m NOT suppose to EAT as I am Gluten FREE I Passed and told people to break OFF a piece!

They did………and kept coming back FOR MORE!

I will make again!

As that RED topper is SO MAGICAL for THE SEASON!

They are VERY SIMPLE TOO!

CAN YOU IMAGINE IN A HEART SHAPE for VALENTINES DAY!

This GAL was a FREQUENT SHOPPER AT THE HEN HOUSE when I dabbled in The ANTIQUE and VINTAGE STUFF!

SHE looked ABSOLUTELY STUNNING at the TEA!

HER EARRINGS KEPT SPEAKING TO ME!

Lucky ME she told me where!

I was NOT as LUCKY!!

HOWEVER,

I did FIND TREASURE TOO!!

It’s the SEASON to be SHOPPING for OTHERS!

Why is it I always FIND MORE for ME THAN the GIFTS I NEED?

I MAY have a WHITE ELEPHANT SALE HERE TO LET YOU PARTAKE IN THE JOY OF RHINESTONE JEWELS!

WOULD THAT INTEREST YOU?

THE LIGHT MAN has FINISHED and is PROUD of his TREE!

NOTE WINSTON under the LADDER!

Isn’t that BAD LUCK?

THE ITALIAN did a BEAUTIFUL JOB

and he knows NOT TO ASK ME TO HELP as I am NOT as PRECISE as HE!

I wrapped GIFTS instead, close by with MUSIC BLASTING the CASA with HOLIDAY SPIRIT!

ABBIAMO FINITO!

WE ARE FINISHED!

JUST IN TIME FOR OUR ANNUAL STREET PARTY!

Tell Me do PEOPLE R.S.V.P. to YOUR PARTIES?

WE had ONE RSVP as of YESTERDAY!

WE are the DESSERT CASA ONLY.

With DESSERT you get MIDNIGHT PASTA TOO!

AS THE HOSTS on our street FOR THE MAIN FARE THEY WORK FULL-TIME and NEED TO SHOP and PLAN FOOD the week before!NOT to mentioned re-arrange Furniture in their living room to set up MORE TABLES!

MY THEORY which has JUST COME TO ME!

Is that PEOPLE DO NOT ENTERTAIN anyMORE and have NO IDEA

what goes into SETTING UP A PARTY!

THEY JUST SHOW UP!!

I THINK YOU KNOW HOW I FEEL ABOUT THAT AND I DONOT NEED TO SPELL IT OUT!

MY FAMILY has TWO PAGES in this BOOK and MY GORGEOUS SON is on the COVER!

MY MOTHER’s CHRISTMAS TREE in her last few years………

AS SHE WAS THE MOTHER HEN at The HEN HOUSE STORE her daughter owned!

THEODORE did NOT make the BOOK as The photo I submitted was NOT up to SNUFF!

Just know HE was a RESCUE CAT from the POUND and a CHRISTMAS Present to ME many years ago by THE SECOND BORN!

BEST CAT EVER!

AS THIS IS THE BEST GIFT EVER from THE FIRST BORN!

BANKSY landed in my kitchen on VALENTINES DAY to live with me and THE ITALIAN for EVER AFTER!

HE HAS NO IDEA HOW GOOD HE HAS IT!

THE GRAND DOGS!

WHO MADE THE BOOK AS WELL…….

NOLLIE on the LEFT.

Goose on the RIGHT.

(GOOSE is full of CANCER and has been given just days to LIVE!)

He is LIVING A GOOD LIFE and GETTING ALL THE FOOD HE DESIRES………MY SON reports he is a VERY HAPPY DOG at the MOMENT!

Elizabeth loved this whole post. First I have to say I adore your new haircut. Looks so chic. What a fun party and those arrangements! Wow. I have to try the pomegranate cookies. I love pomegranates and eat them all winter. Congrats to your family on being in the book. You deserve it as you guys have the biggest hearts and I love that you live like a Princepessa with your Banksy! The tree is fabulous. Where up north is your son now? Tell Giampi he’s amazing with lights. Max could not do such a fab job. The house looks gorgeous. Enjoy the holidays.xxoo Kim

Am beyond impressed with your vegetable still lifes. You’ve given me such an idea for our future farm!! The home looking so interesting. I was zooming in, trying to make out the tapestry/wallpaper mural/giant artwork in the dining room. And speaking of scale, I never realized how high your ceilings are. Until the tree came inside! What a lively existence you lead. You inspire us all.

THAT HOME YOU were ZOOMING in on was NOT MY HOME!THAT was the TEA HOME the old LONGS ESTATE!
Our ceilings were installed by THE ITALIAN by HIMSELF!He sat on the CENTER BEAM and with a crank machine hoisted the other beams UP UP UP!
One BEAM fell and I thought it was HE!
He smiled at me and said “I COULD HAVE CAUGHT IT BUT THAN WHAT WOULD I DO WITH IT!”Meaning he would have been leaning off balance!!!!!!!
AT that time there was NO ROOF and NO BRICK FLOORS INSTALLED!
      HAPPY HAPPY HOLIDAYS!!!!!!!

Gosh, Contessa, you’ve got some pics there!! Your table arrangements are incredible & the other contributions to the morning tea make me think I need to Lift My Game on the arranging front – pick-and-plonk is not going to cut the mustard any more!!

I think Winston was right to look worried under the ladder – the Italian had to be like a nimble monkey up & down and reaching so far with all the lights and baubles. The end result is pretty glorious!! Our 3-foot tall tinsel tree (could be a table setting in Casa Contessa!!) is also colour-lit these days. A last minute white light failure a couple of years back meant there was only coloured to choose in the shoppes, but I prefer it now. Nothing pinterest-worthy in our tree assemblage, just a memory tree with the decorations from travels and childhood, and that’s how I like it!!

Sad news about Goose. Such a sweet-looking dog. And, no, I expect none of your brood realise how lucky they are, living with you in your Teatro!!!

Oh, I have 10 neighbours in for drinks & nibbles tomorrow and they’ve all RSVPed. I must count myself lucky.

Contessa, your blogs are always so uplifting. After enjoying this one, I am most definitely in the Christmas spirit. Beautiful pictures as always. I agree with Cara about etiquette. I don’t think she is being harsh. After all these years, I still remember a statement by Dr. Rowse at Oxford, “If you don’t tell a fool he’s a fool, how will he know he’s a fool?” If no one speaks up, how do people learn and improve? Let’s all hope for better manners in the coming year. In the meantime, I wish you, your husband, and family, and animals, and followers, all the happiness that a Merry Christmas and a healthy and prosperous New Year can bring.

I’m sorry to hear about Goose. It always makes me sad when our four legged family gets sick because they can’t tell us where it hurts or if what we’re doing for them makes them feel better. I do remember Long Drugs, btw! As for entertaining, most people don’t know how to do it, or make the effort. I have a party once a year for my birthday which I love planning but I keep it rather simple (have to shop by bicycle). Sadly, it’s true that not everyone sends a RSVP!

Such a beautiful picture of you and the Italian, you shine with the spirit of Christmas. And…..those veggie and fruit centerpieces….GLORIOUS. It looks like a great time was had by all at the tea party. Love your Christmas tree. How very thoughtful of your wonderful son to bring you such a fabulous and most grandest of trees, The natural Noble Fir. (they are getting harder and harder to find) It is my tree of choice and of course I get excited when I see others who have one too. I’ve made friends with my local tree provider and he now does his best to bring in a nice selection of natural nobles. He shared with me the effort that goes into bringing these coveted trees to the lot and it was labor intensive and time consuming to say the least considering it is coming from the land of trees, Oregon. As always, I love your post. Sending Merry Christmas wishes to you and your family.

Oh, and lovely centerpieces. I hope someone enjoyed eating all those lovely treats!

But I forgot to comment on the rudeness of people when it comes to parties! We used to have a formal event every year, after NewYear’s and specified on the invitation that it was dressy, with black tie appreciated. People would show up in jeans, never to be invited again! Unbelievable! I had neighbors show up in casual clothes and told them to please walk home and change. Now we just do it every other year because I’m usually so annoyed it takes that long to recover my desire to host.

Yes, they wouldn’t RSVP, as you note. SO horribly ill-mannered. I now put an RSVP date and if I haven’t heard by then, will call a day after and say that I’m sorry they won’t be coming to the party. So many of them will say that they would be coming, and I’ll say “I’m sorry, but when you hadn’t responded, I went ahead and invited others to take your place.”

I know people will think that’s too harsh, but the party is a lot of work, as you know (polishing silver, ironing linens, putting out the holiday china, cleaning the house, making the food, writing invitations, among many tasks), that if people cannot be respectful and considerate enough to reply to an invitation and dress as requested, I don’t want them there! SORRY.

I don’t know if you know Kathleen at Passage Des Perles, but she also is outraged by the current lack of manners by people who should know better.
And SO MANY people never reciprocate!

    Again, thanks!

Hello Contessa, I see you are not just ready for, but are already celebrating the holidays! Since you always seem to be in celebratory mode anyway, I guess that this time of the year you must be turbo-charged. I don’t mind taking the holidays off here–in fact, my only plan for Christmas is a dentist appointment.

I love trees that have space between tiers of branches the way yours does. That accommodates so many more ornaments and there’s also depth, instead of having all the ornaments on the ends of the branches. Did it come that way, or did your husband customize it?

Thanks for posting this and Happy Holidays!

Contessa – what a nice surprise to find this post in my inbox this morning. LOVE IT.

The post flowed so beautifully with the start of the pic of you and the Italian. Yes that would be a beautiful Christmas card. I love tea parties and your group did a fantastic job of decorating – I have picked up ideas for my group. Edible arrangement tops it all. I like too how sections of the table were elevated.

The Christmas tree is stunning. What fun to have an annual street party – yes people do need to RVSP. The little hen is delightful. Anyone who enters your house this month will be enchanted with the decorating.

I too will buy a book. It’s so important to help animals. So sad re Goose but he is surrounded by love.

Your holiday season is off to a good start – enjoy the remainder.

Such a festive post, Elizabeth! The tree is a delight, your animals (especially Banksy) make my heart sing, and my word those vegetable arrangements are so beautiful and inspiring. The shining silver vessels and the various shades of green are so amazing. Who knew that celery could almost look like stars when cut like that?!

Like you, I love entertaining. It is an art, and like most art, you either have the knack for it or you do not. Sometimes people prioritise convenience over ceremony, which is fine, but not for me. Paper plates and plastic cups are soul-destroying. You keep doing it RIGHT and inspiring people, lady! xxx

Ordered the book and love seeing your fur babies. I have a rescue of my own, Arnold is his name. He is part Bassett hound and part golden. Don’t think about that too much!?. He is a sweetheart! My black cat, Seinfeld, is also a rescue and is the best cat we’ve owned. The sweetest spirits!

Well hoping you have a very Merry Christmas! We are tucked in the Rocky mountains where the snow is plentiful and it is really feeling like Christmas! Looking forward to your adventures in 2019!?

Those fruit & vegetable arrangements you created for the tea are BEYOND GORGEOUS! I love artichokes in arrangements….apples….grapes….and all things green. How beautiful they are and their reflection in that high polish table…something to behold. The tea looked to be a HUGE success and all those tasty delicacies…heading for the pomegranate sauce cookie recipe now (I also love Pomegranates in arrangements..oh my!) You look sublime as you floated between guests listening to their sparkling jewels speak to you…oh I bet they had some stories to tell…shimmer…wink…shimmer…wink. I can her them twinkling with laughter! Then, we move to the CASA…of the Garden Goddess and her handsome Italian. That tree is a work of art! It is encrusted with luminous glass ornaments that dangle and drip from ceiling (vaulted ceiling) to floor. The Mother Hen Tree with the leopard wrap around the hen neck…is so very special. Not only is she a stylish hen, she is imbued sweet memories of your late mother. Keep her close! Merry Christmas, GORGEOUS!

What a trip you’ve taken us on! The centerpieces indeed do look like Old Masters still lifes. Your tea party is very glamorous. I imagine invitees to that gathering did RSVP. Our friends are good about RSVPs, but sometimes when we’ve had bigger events–la Fête des Voisins (neighbor day) or a big cookout–people just show up…or don’t. Or show up with a bunch of friends in tow. We quit doing bigger gatherings because of it.
Your tree is beautiful and makes me reconsider colored lights. We just put up ours, and it was such a special moment. Our kid put on Christmas music and sang along.
