SANDRA VEUM for AGELESS STYLE!

July 29, 2021 59 Comments

YOUR BIRTHDAY IS ARRIVING SHORTLY ON AUGUST 1,YOU will be 56 years old!

HAPPY, HAPPY BIRTHDAY SANDRA!

May I inquire how tall you are and what size you generally wear?

I ask because I see you in A LOT of long MAXI dresses and many women who are not statuesque feel they cannot

DO THAT LOOK!

IT IS TIME FOR AGELESS STYLE WITH MY PARTNER Cindy Hattersley DESIGN.IF YOU ARE NEW TO OUR BLOGS We INTERVIEW A WOMAN OR MAN ONCE A MONTH AND ASK A FEW QUESTIONS!THE POINT IS FOR ALL OF US TO LEARN SOMETHING NEW OR TAKE AWAY A NEW SKINCARE ITEM OR BOOK TO READ!OR WAYS TO CLEAN OUT YOUR CLOSET OR RE-PURPOSE WHAT YOU ALREADY OWN!MY GOAL HERE IS FOR MY VICTIM TO HAVE FUN ANSWERING THE QUESTIONS AND HIGHLIGHTING HER BUSINESS OR INSTAGRAM FEED.I LOVE PUTTING PEOPLE TOGETHER!

IT BRINGS ME A LOT OF JOY!

LET ME INTRODUCE TO YOU SANDRA…………..

I am 5’2 but I say my personality is 6’2, ha ha! I love maxi’s and midi’s and actually prefer to wear them since I don’t like my round knees. I do look for the right proportion and type of material for a nice drape. Too much material or too thick of material seems to wear me verses me wearing it. My rule of thumb is to wear what makes you feel confident and beautiful! My size ranges now between a 4-6, 27-28, xs-sm, and a size 6 for my shoes. On average, I am a small. Funny enough because of my height people assume I am a petite sizing but petites do not fit my torso. They tend to be too short for me. I have a large ribcage so I always have to look for tops and blouses that get past my gymnastic ribcage. ? This is where everyone should really know their body silhouette and go by the best fit. As a wardrobe stylist, I fit every body type and size.  All sizing is gorgeous; remember it is always about confidence!

“I want YOU to PROVE THEM WRONG!”

  SAYS LA CONTESSA!

Also give us a brief BIO of who YOU ARE!

I am Sandra Veum and I am a Personal Wardrobe Stylist in San Diego, CA. My business is MARIPOSA STYLE and I have had my styling business over 15 years now. I am a mom to a remarkable daughter who just graduated from Cal Poly SLO and is already working in marketing as a Social Media Specialist for a marketing software company. So proud! I have been with my yummy hubby for over 30 years, with 26 of them married. We lived in sin for a few years. 🙂  He is an uber talented architect and specializes in healthcare, corporate, workplace, and houses.

I am a lucky gal who knew her passion of styling and fashion early on and created a business where I can help others be the best version of themselves! I offer closet evaluations where I help you edit, organize, “shop your own closet”, while creating your own “look book”.  I help you become more of a strategic shopper while learning where to spend the money and where to save.  I like to focus my efforts on my client’s individual needs, body type and budget rather than a specific designer, brand, or store.  I believe that everyone can be “effortless chic” with their own individual style and at any price.  Individual style comes from a person being inspired, open-minded, and confident with who they are. I help develop your own personal style and integrate it into your life.

I was Fashion Valley Mall’s Personal Stylist/Shopper.  I am a Content Contributor and Shopping Blogger for the San Diego Tourism Authority, San Diego’s official travel website, www.sandiego.org.  In addition to being a guest speaker for Qualcomm, a keynote speaker for Marriott Marquis San Diego Marina, and a guest on various podcasts: The Modern Girl Podcast, The Flipping 50 Show Podcast, The Parker Edison Project from KPBS Radio, The Brett Davis Podcast, and Women’s Hormone Health private Facebook group.

I received invaluable retail experience throughout college.  After graduating, I started in a “Manager in Training” program for a specialty chain of retail clothing stores.  Then after a short time, an opportunity came my way to develop my skills in the hospitality industry where I spent the next 16 years in sales and marketing. Before my professional career, I graduated from Arizona State University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Textiles & Clothing while receiving a Minor in Business.

1. SANDRA as a wardrobe stylist how would you DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

Funny enough but my style changes all the time. Meaning I like to have a variety to choose from depending on what I feel like when I wake up. Sometimes I feel like wearing a jean ensemble then maybe the next day wearing a dress and then next a culotte ensemble. I change all the time. That is why I believe I do not get bored with my wardrobe. If I had to come up with a quick description it might be “classic with an edge”. My philosophy is to be known as someone with great style and not just a certain genre. I look for fit, material, and a uniqueness in the construction, details, or something just a little bit different. One of my tips is, even if you are trying to downsize, make sure you still have variety of pieces or you will get bored after a while. Life is too short not to play dress up!

2. As a stylist can you define FASHION and STYLE for us?

I personally define the two that Fashion is a visual/inspiration to create your own Style. I feel that Style is your own personal twist or personality on something that was inspired by Fashion. I also feel that Style has no price. Just think of Fashion as constantly evolving and changing but Style should always remain within yourself once you define who you are.

3. What made you go down this path? Is there a GOOD STORY TO SHARE?

There is always a good story to tell! I have always been inspired and intrigued by fashion and style, even as a little girl. I would always watch classic movies with stars like Jean Harlow, Ava Gardner, Bette Davis, Lauren Bacall, Carole Lombard, Greta Garbo, etc. and think, “Wow, I want to dress like that” I also always liked dressing my Barbie dolls up and had multiple changes throughout my playtime creating make-believe events. This also included Ken since Barbie needed a stylish date!

The ironic thing is that I was also a tomboy growing up since my best friend was a boy and I did gymnastics and softball. Where you might think this would contradict my interest in fashion I like to think that it now makes me a good stylist today knowing how to incorporate style into people’s lives while making it functional for them. I am one of the few stylists that I know that actually has a Bachelor of Science degree in Textiles & Clothing with a Minor in Business.

4. What do you LOVE most about your job?

I absolutely love building confidence within people, I just happen to do it through your wardrobe. I like to think of myself as a style concierge. I am here to help people’s lives easier with their wardrobe, closet, packing for trips, shopping, and helping them make smarter choices while getting excited to wear everything in their closet. I love changing people’s lives. I have worked with so many people at so many different parts of their lives both good and bad. If I can bring a smile on someone’s face by doing what I do, then that makes my day! I love hearing how something as simple as wardrobe or a closet can truly inspire people with their life goals. I love what I do!!!

5. What TRENDS TODAY can the over 50 woman DO with confidence?

Let me first start by saying, what can’t women over 50 wear with confidence today, trend or not? I feel that most of us after age 50 really come into our own. We embrace where we are at and accept us for the fabulous women we are. I do remind my clients to remain true to yourself and not try to dress for others. Be mindful of not trying to relive the glory days though. Meaning do not try to compete with your daughters or share clothing. It is important for them to create their own style and come into their own confidence while you evolve into your confidence as a fabulous woman over 50! That does not mean that if your daughter wants to borrow a fabulous tailored blazer or leather jacket from you, that you should not do that. It is more about having your own style as it evolves and letting daughters come into their own. I hope that makes sense. I feel that you can embrace most trends but still focus on your body-type, fit, skin tone, hair color, and lifestyle. If you feel amazing, then wear it with pride, just don’t be wrinkled or sloppy.

6. Favorite Magazine today for FASHION?

For me I still love Harper’s Bazaar & Vogue. A close third and fourth are In Style and Elle. I actually still get in the mail all four of them and love when I can just savor my time going through them. I usually save them for when I am traveling so I can really read them. I used to also purchase the European versions but since Covid they have doubled in price and got so expensive, so I count on my on-line subscriptions and Pinterest for European inspiration.

7. FASHION BOOKS YOU COVET?

HAVE YOU READ ANDRE LEON TALLEY’s BOOK?

THOUGHTS?

I own almost every coffee table fashion book out there. I LOVE them! I usually get them as gifts, my family and friends know me so well. Some of my favorite biographies are: “I’ll Drink to That” by Betty Halbreich. I also have had the pleasure of meeting with her twice when I was visiting NY and became pen pals. 🙂  I also love “Empress of Fashion” about Diana Vreeland, “A Life in Fashion” about Isabella Blow. I also love “Coco Chanel “The Legend and the Life”, and “Grace” memoir of Grace Coddington. In addition to “Scatter My Ashes at Bergdorf Goodman”, and last but not least “The Woman I Wanted to Be” by Diane Von Furstenberg.

Finally yet importantly, of course I immediately ordered and read Andre Leon Talley’s book “The Chiffon Trenches”. I loved his background and all of his fabulous stories. It made me wish I were with him in those fashion glory days!

8. When you are helping a client sort their closet what do you zoom in on first?

What is the FIRST THING that you think of to START the EDIT?

I immediately see how they have their clothing organized or not. This tells me how they are living in their closet with wardrobe choices. I do not see messes, I see if they are putting thought into their ensembles. I like to start by asking them ahead of time what items they are having trouble wearing new or not. I also like to ask what their outfit of choice is to feel the most confident in.

We then start to go through the closet asking questions along the way and pulling out the items that they are having trouble wearing. I then start to build outfits around those pieces. With regards to editing, if it is of poor fit, tattered/holes/yellowed, or outdated we start the donate pile. There may be pieces to re-work that we can breathe new life into with a tailor, and then some pieces that we can consign. My rule of thumb is if you have not worn it over two years then time to maybe get rid of it. Also if you are unsure if you want it or not, put it aside for 24 hours and then make the decision. Nine times out of ten, you donate it.

9. Will you SHARE YOUR SKINCARE REGIME PLEASE and tell us about your A) Favorite lipstick B) Favorite Foundation C) Favorite MAKE UP REMOVER.

I actually wash my face with baby shampoo. I then apply “Eye Protection Therapy” by Skin Resource MD for dark circles. Then “Facial Serum” all over my face before my moisturizer. I then put Clarins “Lotus Treatment Oil” all over my face neck and then finish with “Skin Food” cream by Weleda. I also always wear a chapstick of some kind on my lips before bed. I have very dry skin. The daytime I repeat everything, excluding the face oil, but now add Cetephil’s “Daily Facial Moisturizer with SPF 50+”

  1. Favorite lipstick is anything from Trish McEvoy and one from Nyx called “Love is a Drug”. I love berry colored lip liners, any brand. I go by the color.
  2. I first use “The Pore fessional” primer by Benefit and then mix Garnier’s “BB Skinactive 5-in-1 Miracle Skin Perfector” in light/medium. It has SPF of 15 and is anti-aging & a little bit of “Dew You” by Too Faced for a little natural dewiness with my BB Cream. I then finish off my blush with “You’re So Jelly” by Too Faced, for a slight highlight on my cheekbone.
  3. My fav make up remover is Neutrogena’s fragrance free “Cleansing Towlette”.
  4. I am adding a secret weapon for bright eyes, which is using “Lumify” whitening eye drops. The best!!
  5. I also love a jade roller for my face and neck in addition to Nuface Line smoothing device for my face and around my mouth.

10. How often do you see a WELL PUT TOGETHER WOMAN IN San Diego COUNTY?

DOES IT TAKE YOUR BREATH AWAY?

DO YOU WANT TO RUN UP TO HER AND COMPLIMENT THE OUTFIT?

DOES IT GIVE YOU JOY?

(VALERIE AND COMPANY NOT INCLUDED!!)

CHATEAU BEL AGE BOUTIQUE 1578 W.LEWIS STREET San Diego, CALIFORNIA

THIS IS VALERIE!

I love that you say that I cannot mention Valerie’s posy! They are fabulous! When I see a woman who truly stands out and just looks put together or unique, I make sure to compliment her. I think we all need to do that more often for each other. I love making people feel good about themselves and I know how much it means to me if someone compliments something I have on. I do feel San Diego is a little too casual at times probably due to our weather. I just love to see when women just add a little pizzazz to their outfit. Even simple ensembles can be picked-up just a bit, by adding some jewelry, a scarf, statement earrings, a hat, or a fabulous cross-body! Whatever suits them.  I like to say, “It is like adding an exclamation point at the end of a sentence!

11. How do you decide if a piece of clothing stays in your closet or gets the BOOT?

I try to be compassionate about this process since most people have an emotional attachment to a piece of clothing they are holding onto. Sometimes it is a memory, a weight goal, or a guilt gift. I try to help guide them on what to get rid of and what to possibly keep during this process. My usual recommendation is that if you have not worn it in two years you might need to donate it, gift-it to a friend, or consign it. Do not base any of this on the last 1.5 years of the pandemic since I am calling that a “mulligan” in regards to our clothing usage. I am strict on getting rid of items if it is of poor fit, bad proportion, stained, has a hole, out of style, etc. You never want to look sloppy or not put-together.

12. CAN YOU SHARE WITH US EVERY LITTLE OR BIG ITEM THAT IS IN YOUR HANDBAG?

DO YOU TEND TO USE IT ALL?

I have pretty much shifted to wearing a cross-body at all times. I use both of my hands all the time and I found that my shoulders and neck were hurting so once I switched to a daily cross-body bag I am so much better. What a cross-body does it helps you become more mindful of what you “really need” in your purse. I use everything! My items are:

  • A small leather card case to carry my driver’s license, credit cards, cash, and insurance cards.
  • A small brush with hairbands
  • Small cologne spray
  • Eye drops
  • Small hand sanitizer
  • Cute mask
  • Some tissues
  • Blisstick- anti friction stick- to prevent blisters from shoes
  • A Shout Wipe&Go
  • Safety pins
  • A couple double sided fashion tape
  • Sunglasses
  • Readers
  • Small make-up bag- only essential for touch-ups

14. A few tips on your FAVORITE restaurants in San Diego since it is a VACATION DESTINATION!

What is your favorite cocktail to enjoy when you get to go out?

Where do I begin with my favorite restaurants! There are so many but here we go:

  • Cowboy Star for steak & atmosphere
  • Coasterra for Mexican food, margaritas, and panoramic water/city views
  • Bencotta & Cesarina for homemade Italian food
  • The Turf Club in Goldin Hills for a retro dive place to grill your own food at a communal BBQ and drink delicious Lemon Drops or Filthy Martinis with stuffed blue cheese olives.
  • Great Maple in Hillcrest for brunch and their sinful maple bacon donuts!

My favorite cocktail to enjoy depending on the atmosphere, and what I am wearing, just kidding, would be and in no particular order:

  • Filthy Tito’s martini with blue cheese stuffed olives
  • Strawberry basil Moscow mule
  • Spicy cucumber margarita with jalapeño
  • Aperol Spritz
  • White wine during summer, cabernet during winter

“STYLE COMES FROM BEING INSPIRED, OPEN-MINDED AND CONFIDENT WITH WHO YOU ARE, WHILE SOMETIMES TAKING A LITTLE RISK…”

“…MY PHILOSOPHY, ANYONE CAN BE EFFORTLESS-CHIC WITH THEIR OWN INDIVIDUAL STYLE AND AT ANY PRICE. I BELIEVE IT IS IMPORTANT TO HAVE YOUR OWN ‘LOOK’ RATHER THAN FEELING FORCED TO WEAR THE LATEST TRENDS.”

Great article! Interesting to get to know Sandra.
I totally downsized my wardrobe in 2017 after reading Marie Kondo’s book. Almost four years later my closet seems to he full again.
On my way to find Sandra on IG.
    Thank you

La Contessa, I love coats! Funny, but I must have lived another life in a cold location because I own more coats and jackets than someone from North Dakota! I just love them! Being born and raised in AZ and now living in San Diego it probably makes no sense. 🙂 I can relate to broken coat rods! I just buy sturdier clothing racks now and put them in my office.:) Makes a colorful backdrop!

Hi Marleah! So glad to have you visit my IG! Thank you for also reading the article, I just appreciate La Contessa so much! I love Marie Kondo, she is just so cute too! I love her way of editing and organizing but for me it is a little more extreme. There is no right or wrong though. Techniques need to work for the individual. I love her idea of if you don’t love something then to free it. I tend to keep a little more since I like my options and like to dress different everyday. Again, no right or wrong. I do feel that I need to edit a little more since Covid time since I feel my wants might have changed a little. Thank you so much again for sharing your thoughts!

Hello Leopard Jean! Yasss to leopard. I always say leopard is a neutral. I have so much leopard and love it! So glad you agree! Australia is on my bucket list! It sounds like I will have the perfect wardrobe when I finally go i.e. leopard and caftans.:) Funny but I am actually doing a Zoom call today with a company out of Australia called shopshare.tv. Hi Elizabeth,
Very nice! Sandra seems so relatable, I like how she thinks, and her style is great, very wearable and fun.
I have been venturing out of my comfort zone for some time now, but let’s face it this last year has been boring and not fun to be in the house all the time. So now when I go out I try to dress with more fun and jazz things up a little bit!
I agree with Sandra that style has no age and to dress in a way that feels right for ourselves. I’m going to check her out on instagram!
I am looking forward to being more free to travel and visit new and exciting places, and to dress for them, too!
    XO Heidi

Hi Heidi! thank you so much for your nice comments on the fabulous La Contessa’s blog! I am glad you are venturing out of your comfort zone. Just take it in small pieces and then as you get used to it keep going. I tell clients to be patient with yourself since it takes approximately 21 days to change a habit. Don’t count the last 1.5 years either when re-visiting your wardrobe. Base it on the past and how you currently feel moving forward. I wish you some fun future travels and exciting places to go! At the end of the day it is all about having fun and feeling good!! Cheer!

I so loved reading all her beauty essentials. Thank you Sandra I look forward to following you on Instagram and being more adventurous with my clothes. Why not? I really appreciate when someone has great style and sadly up here in the Bay Area, I rarely see people go out of their comfort zone ! This post also made me want to get down to San Diego! It’s been a while and it sure looks lovely. Thank you Sandra for spilling the beans on your secrets! Loved it all! Kim

Hello Kim! A fellow Californian, love it! I am a Californian now but I was a Zonie which is AZ.:) I am so glad you could relate to my height and age. I personally feel that after 50 years old we all start blending, right? Meaning we can all relate more with everything going on in our lives and are more open about it. Thank you for following me on IG, let me know your handle and I can follow you too if you like.:) Now onto your wardrobe and taking chances, YESSSSS! I could not have said it better myself with “Why not”? Maybe you cans tart a trend in the bay area and inspire people to step it up just a bit. Remember it does not have to be a huge thing, it could be as simple as adding a scarf, a pop-of-color earring, a cute cross-body bag, etc. You are so welcome about my recommendations in San Diego. I love it here, I also love the bay area.:) Let me know if you ever visit!!

I enjoyed the post about Sandra. She has a terrific style that packs a colorful punch. How wonderful it would be to have my closets curated – if I worked outside the home or went out more, I would do it. I appreciate seeing her daily skincare and beauty products (I wonder why she washes her (dry-skin) face with baby shampoo – I have very dry, mature skin and I use Paula’s Choice creamy, moisturizing face wash in the dark red container). PS: I too have a yummy hubby 🙂

Hi Kathy! I am so glad you read the interview with the fabulous La Contessa! She is truly one of my role models! Thank you also for your comments.:) You would be surprised how many people I have worked with that maybe don’t socialize or work as much anymore. Everyone’s needs are different at different times in their lives. In those cases, it seems to be more about having pieces in your closet that work for you now, but still make you happy and feel good about yourself. I always say that even if we are going to the grocery store or a doctor’s visit, why not get dressed in a casual & comfortable chic way? It is a proven fact that we feel better about ourselves when we are put together. They say even our posture seems to be more erect. I am also speaking about myself too. Now, don’t get me wrong, there are days that I wear my workout clothes, btw I probably did not even work out that day, and run my errands. We all do that, but the key is not to get in a habit of it, because then we forget how to dress when we need to put more effort into it. I hope that makes sense. With regards to baby shampoo, I was recommne3d by my dermatologist to use that to wash my face after being diagnosed with Idiopathic Angioedema which would affect my eyes. I just use a little bit and rinse thoroughly. I then lather up my face with the Clarins oil and moisturizer. When I am really dry I actually use Nivea Creme. It sounds like you found your magic concoction though that works for you. So glad you also have a yummy hubby! 🙂

Thank you Elizabeth for another inspiring Ageless Style and introducing Sandra.
I enjoyed her take on style and age and wearing what makes you feel your best . I did have a chuckle about not re-visiting our youth through our choices. Sandra’s clients are indeed lucky to have such an enthusiastic stylist guiding them to be their best selves. I agree and do also give a compliment if I see someone who looks fabulous and different to the norm. I am a bit of a collector so do not get rid of things that I haven’t worn for a couple of years as time and time again their turn comes round again.
    Once again thank you both.
P.S. Elizabeth , you commented on my roses , they hadn’t been pruned then , much shorter now.

Hi Jill! So great to meet you through the interview with the wonderful La Contessa! I am glad you could relate to some of it and maybe had a laugh or two.:) I am so happy to hear that you are also compliment other women, so important for all of us! With regards to collecting, I am as well. The key though is that the fit still works. For example, the silhouette of pants has changed from 10 years ago even in regards to the current style of a full pant. The rise might be different and the cut of the leg might be different. Of course, there are classic pieces that will always work like a palazzo pant. When I help clients edit their wardrobe, I teach them on the items to keep, knowing they will return like you said, or get rid of it. The ones I recommend getting rid of, I know will come back but probably be tweaked a bit or reinvented. For instance, remember the stirrup pants with the oversized shoulder pad sweaters that hit mid thigh? BTW, not saying you own this or ever wore it.:) Those will more than like not come back exactly. But we are seeing the shoulder pads to keep a structure of a blazer or the current trendy t-shirt with shoulder pads on trend. The only time stirrup pants would be good is if you are riding a horse, then that would be equestrian-chic! It sounds like you totally get it though. I never say to apologize for having too many clothes but that to make sure you give them all a wear so that they just don’t sit in your closet. It sounds like you have an amazing collection! I love that!! Thanks so much again an so nice to meet you.:)

Hi Sarah! I am so glad you read the interview and happy that you like a vertically challenged gal wearing a maxi dress! Tall or small the whole idea is finding the right fit and material that drapes nicely on your body. At least that is what I always strive for. I also like easy maintenance.:) So happy you enjoyed the article. Have a great weekend!

Wow, Contessa! Congratulations on another wonderful post. You have a talent for bringing us intriguing and interesting women. Please keep doing so. Sandra is elegant, warm, knowledgeable, and authentic. (Just like another Sandra we know!) Her own confidence and joie de vivre is evident in all of the photos, making her an inspiration to all of us. I like her attitude. I am 5’5″ and love wearing long dresses and skirts. I could use a session with Sandra to help with my wardrobe – I have far too many clothes (something you rarely hear a woman say) and need to pare down to a more manageable amount of pieces that I will actually wear. I appreciate this thoughtful and informative post.

Hi there Judith! Thank you so much for reading the interview with the creative La Contessa! I totally agree with you that she has a knack of introducing such unique women from all over the world. I truly admire her for that. I always learn something new when I read her interviews and info on herself. 🙂 It means the world to me what you stated, thank you so much! I love that you are 5’5, that is tall to me, ha ha! My daughter is 5’5 and I think that is such a perfect height. I am also glad you enjoy wearing maxi dresses and skirts. I think they are so chic! I am here anytime you are ready for a session. I also work virtually! Feel free to contact me for a complimentary consultation.:) Funny enough, a lot of my clients actually have a lot of clothes but they are not wearing them. I guess it is the 80/20 rule. The key to paring down is to make sure you are still left with enough pieces and the right pieces to create some fun with. Sometimes too small of a wardrobe creates boredom. Thank you so much again and be sure to reach out to me when you are ready too!

    Hi there
I enjoyed Sandra’s enthusiasm and her comments – helps others to be the best version of themselves – effortless chic – I love changing people’s lives – wear what makes you feel confident/beautiful. These are all positive comments which we can incorporate in our lives.
    So true to compliment someone.
Sandra has some really interesting what I call sidelines/extensions related to her occupation e.g. shopping blogger for SD Tourism Blogger.
She is encouraging me to go thru my closet!
    Thanks for sharing.

Hi Rosemarie! So nice of you to take the time to comment. I am so happy you enjoyed the interview. I just adore La Contessa! I am also glad you feel the same way I do about basically feeling good about ourselves and encouraging others to do the same. We are all in this together! It has been very cool to have such different opportunities since I started my business over 15 years ago. The shopping blogging is just one that I loved doing as well as helping companies out with writing and presenting on dress codes. This is now needed more than ever due to Covid and everyone confused with what to wear. 🙂 I am also thrilled you are encouraged to go through your closet. I know it can be daunting and that is why I suggest doing it in pieces. Remember, going through your closet can also mean just shopping your own closet and coming up with new “looks” with old pieces. It doesn’t always mean editing. I hope that helps. Thank you so much again!

OMG, hello Hilda! I am Irish so this is amazing! My maiden name is McGrady.:) One of my wishes is to travel to Ireland someday! I just know I would love it and the people! You are so welcome on the style tips. I truly love sharing just about anything! Maybe too much at times, he he. The Lumify eyedrops are the absolute best! I even confirmed with my optometrist if it was ok to use everyday and he said yes. Apparently it was created from eye drops for Glaucoma originally. I guess one of the side affects was the whitening of the eyes so some smart person created Lumify! It is a little pricey but worth every penny! I am so happy you are following me on IG, let me know your handle and I will follow back. I concur with you on how wonderful La Contessa is! Bravo to her! Cheers!

Hi Naila! What a beautiful name! Thank you so much for commented on the fun interview with the fabulous La Contessa! I am glad you agree with my definition between style and fashion. With regards to reliving our early years, trust me, I have been there myself. I finally woke up one day and thought, “I feel even better today, in the sense of acceptance, so I am dressing now for myself and not others”! I read so many “rules” growing up about what I could wear and what I could not wear. I finally said to heck with that, I am wearing what I feel awesome in! Rules are meant to be broken as long as you do it in a stylish way.:) I am so glad you can also relate to the idea of having many styles. Thanks so much again for your comments!

I feel that it helps everyone out. So funny about the big ribcage. You are so right that no one ever talks about it. I guess I have dressed and styled enough people to really know the ins and outs of how to dress every situation. It certainly helps when I have similar situations. I am so glad you liked the list of restaurants and boutiques. I could have gone on and on but knew the blog could only list so many, ha ha! I just tried a new restaurant last night called Callie, which was fantastic! Feel free to reach out anytime!

Love this series and loved learning more about Sandra. I’ve followed her for several years because … YOU! Never in a millions years would I guess she is in inch below 5’10” … I love how she carries herself and how her wardrobe creates a sense of serious height. You’re right … caftans are for everyone. I’m tempted to look her up when we make our annual pilgrimage to Coronado at the end of the year. I’m panicking about my step-mother of the groom dresses and could use some help. In the interim, she’s got me thinking about closet editing. Another great style ‘victim’, Contessa … and now, off to see who Cindy’s featuring! xo

Good morning, Juliet! I truly appreciate you following me! I have always admired La Contessa ever since meeting her at my favorite boutique, Chateau Bel Age! I also appreciate you thinking I was so tall….I wish! As I said in my interview I have never felt my height. I have learned over the years how to dress taller.:) Don’t get me wrong, there is nothing wrong with being 5’2. There are advantages to that height and being tall. Either way it is about learning how to dress for our height and body silhouette. Amen to caftans! I try to channel Elizabeth Taylor on a yacht somewhere with Richard Burton when I wear mine, ha ha! By the way she was also 5’2! I would love to either help you when you are visiting the beautiful Coronado or at a minimum meet for coffee! I actually have quite a few clients on Coronado.:) I love helping with weddings and completely understand the protocol of them. We should at least have a chat. Lastly, I love that you are inspired to edit your closest. One of my tips with regards to editing closets is trying to get in the habit of doing it every quarter, bit by bit, so it is not as daunting all at once. If you notice items that no longer “speak to you” put it aside in a donation bag and add to it throughout the quarter. That way you get in the habit of editing! I hope that helped.:) Hope to meet you!

I always plan to downsize my wardrobe and get more quality things but I end up putting everything thing back in my wardrobe. I cling to clothes because of the memories they bring. My mum, on the other hand, just throws things into bags to donate. Not sure how were so different.

Hello there! Thank you so much for taking the time to read my segment. I just love La Contessa! She is so inspirational to me in fashion and just as a woman! With regards to having a hard time getting rid of items, you are not alone.:) Memories can make us hold onto items that we think bring us pleasure when in actuality it is truly the memory.:) I say when editing start small. Meaning, start with one section of your closet, maybe your workout wear. That probably does not have such memories. then move onto another section. This way you are getting in the habit of editing at least. With the items that you have the most memories for put those aside for 24 hours and then revisit them the next day and see how you feel. Sometimes taking a picture helps too. You can also maybe re-work items into aa more modern fit, make a scarf, pillow sham, jacket, etc. You just want to make sure you are wearing your clothes and that they bring you joy and make you feel confident. Once you know what to get rid of then you cans tart adding in higher quality pieces that bring you new joy and maybe pair them with a nostalgic item that you might have re-worked. At the end of the day it is all about being the best version of ourselves!

I loved reading about Sandra. If she had not stated her height, I would have guessed she was taller. The way Sandra dresses really is an inspiration.

Since I lost quite a bit of weight (but never enough!), I’ve been reassessing my old wardrobe. I find it hard to get rid of some things because they are old but exquisitely made and with fabric that is a high quality that you just don’t see these days!

I really hate how unstylish plus sized clothes are — so I’m taking matters into my own hands.

Hello! Thank you so much for responding to the blog. I just adore La Contessa! She is so inspiring to me! I am so glad you enjoyed the piece on my background. I am even more happy that you did not realize my vertically challenged height, ha ha! Again, I personally feel that height and weight does not matter, it is who you are inside and how confident you feel about yourself. I want to commend you though on your weight journey. Good for you! I personally think everyone should reassess their wardrobe every few years. I know it is hard sometimes to get rid of high quality items, but if you are not able to wear them for whatever reason you are doing it injustice. 🙂 What I mean by that, is that the piece is, or was, meant to be worn at some point. Maybe you can rework it into a different more modern style?, a scarf?, a pillow sham? Or donate it. You would be surprising, even with the hard items to get rid of, how refreshing it is once it is gone. Then if high quality is your goal, start adding your must-have can’t-live-without pieces one by one over time. Just make sure before you invest that you come up with at least three to five different ways to wear it so that you get your cost per wear. I agree that the plus size styles really needs to be re-vamped. There are too many beautiful plus size women that need to showcase their confidence. There are some brands which are slowly embracing that. Unfortunately it seems to be more on-line right now. I love that you are taking maters into your own hands! You already sound confident to me! Thank you so much, again, so nice meeting you!

        Hi Sandra,

I tried to lose weight for about 25 years and only gained more; then I stopped trying and lost it. I have been thinking of having some things remade. I have a lovely seersucker dress with a very full skirt and I am thinking of having made into only a skirt. I have thought about taking up quilting and using some of the material in a quilt. It bothers me that sizes that were never considered large when I was growing up are now considered large. When I was young, I was totally traumatized because I could never find a pair of jeans that would fit. A few years ago, I bought a pair that didn’t fit — wll now they do — would it have been so hard for designers to have made pairs that fit? I have several lengths of Irish tweed and think that I will have a great tailor sew things for me; although I was just given a beautiful Bernina sewing machine, I think I’ll trust the beautiful fabric to experts. When I was working, I was an expert at buying pieces that could be worn in many different ways and had a versatile but not large wardrobe. I have given away many pieces but some just cannt leave! Again, thank you for sharing your story! Ann, a height challenged colleague!

Sounds like a great plan with possibly taking up quilting! That way you can still have the memoires but used differently. I also love the idea of the seersucker dress being made into a skirt. Then you can wear the skirt with a white t-shirt and denim jacket. I totally get it about the sizing. We have been all over the board with sizing for years. Slowly but surely designers and brands are getting smart with making all sizes. I am thrilled you found a pair of jeans that worked for you! I’m not sure what size you are but check out the brand Liverpool for jeans and other items. I just bought a pair of jeans and love them! I actually had to size down so it was good for the psyche! Thank you for sharing and keep in touch!
