SISSINGHURST!

August 7, 2017 95 Comments

MY FAVORITE GARDEN from my recent trip to England.

WHY………brick walls,out buildings………….and a WEE bit of HISTORY!

SEE the TWIN TOWERS in the distance?

VITA SACKVILLE WEST’s STUDY.

WHO WAS VITA?

A WRITER

A GARDENER

A MOTHER

A WIFE

AND A WOMAN WHO HAD LOADS OF PASSION FOR A WORN OUT BUILDING.

SHE CREATED the FIRST

ALL WHITE GARDEN.

FOLLOW ME!

OFF TO THE TOWERS!

View from the top of the TOWERS!

Bottom floor of the TOWERS.

I DRESSED FOR THE GARDEN!

THE WHITE GARDEN.

The Priest’s House in the distance which YOU can RENT!

LUPINE!

One of MY FAVORITES which has never done well for me!

Copper pot found on the GROUNDS.

One of THREE.

This dates back to EARLIER TIMES………MUCH EARLIER TIMES.

This WORKS FOR ME!

SEE the reflection of the tree?

BRICK WORK HAS SUCH STYLE!

MEADOW’S ARE BIG in ENGLAND.

HAROLD was Vita’s husband.

ANY STONE or CONCRETE GARDEN THINGS GET MY ATTENTION.

LOVE THE HEIGHT OF THIS STONE BENCH at SISSINGHURST!

Taller than the NORM!

LOVE HOW THIS IS GROWING IN THE WALL!

OLD STONE SINKS FOUND ON THE PROPERTY ALSO………….HAPPY TO SAY I HAVE ONE OF THESE FOUND ON A SUNDAY WALK in TUSCANY!Tossed at the side of the road for GARBAGE!I never ran so fast in my LIFE to get the ITALIAN and his SISTERS to GO GET IT!!!!!!!!It now HAS A HOME in my MASTER BATH.

A POT WITH AN ACCESSORY!

A RELATIVE of VITA’s.

VITA AT AGE 16!

This copper pot was found in the PIGGERY!

OH, how BANKSY would LOVE THIS.

I would LOVE to have a BRICK WALL with a VIEW!

The ITALIAN is AFRAID of EARTHQUAKES SO NO CAN DO!!!

CASCADING over the wall………

If I recall CORRECTLY this little STONE BOX was brought back from their travels to IRAN.

Where the GRANDSON lives now with his FAMILY!

THE OLD BARN that now houses the RESTAURANT.

SHALL WE STEP THROUGH………….?

Elizabethan Barn!

THAT was used as a HOSPITAL PRISON in the 7 year war!

Vita’s bedroom window.

ANYONE know where this PLAQUE resides?

This little BENCH was made by their CHAFFER and HANDYMAN!

With FOUND objects on the PROPERTY!

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT!

I hope you enjoyed my Photos of SISSINGHURST and if you ever find yourself in the KENT countryside in ENGLAND take a GANDER.I doubt you will be disappointed any time of year.ENGLAND has SO MUCH TO OFFER and the PEOPLE ARE SO LOVELY!!!This concludes my SHARING of photos of the lovely CHRISTMAS Gift my husband gave me.I hope to GO back AGAIN and AGAIN.

MEANWHILE,I plow through at my little estate………..back home with my companion SIR WINSTON at my side!

    Ma Chere Contessa,
I was feeling stressed and decided to take a look at your blog post.
    Delightful vicarious trip to Sissinghurst!
I loved all the lovely vines and blossoms draping the beautiful English brick walls.
Thanks for the pick me up.
You dear Contessa looked divine in both England enjoying the white garden and at home with Winston in your little Sissinghurst.
You are the best gardener I know!

So beautiful! Seems like you walked through those gates on the most perfect day! Now I must read about the history of this estate because that tower has triggered my memory…something about a gift Queen Elizabeth I gave to a very special confidant…there’s never enough memory for the wealth of fascinating English history!

YES, but not the TOWERS………..I do not think. This was a GRAND PALACE at one time…….than a PIGGERY and a PRISON!Vita had relatives who had towers identical to these somewhere else in England and that is one reason she fell in LOVE with the falling down structure. Her SONS were horrified she was buying it as was the husband HAROLD!She purchased with her own money as her family estate was left to her cousin a MALE.And HE didNOT want it!!!!!!IT was TUFF being a GIRL back in the DAY……….still can BE!XX

Breathtaking… loved the bird’s eye view into such a magical place… and YOU are the perfect hostess for such a grand setting!! The ‘management’ should have offered you a garret apartment ~ clearly you should be in residence (even if part-time) at Sissinghurst : ) It is impossible not to become intoxicated by the beauty and history of England… I am immersed in reading about Chatsworth and do not want to come up for air. Stunning! And the gardens are nice too (wink wink).

Really quite gorgeous, all of it, reminding me that my one or two quick pass-throughs in the UK long long ago (on business) were utterly insufficient.

Between my addiction to Foyle (and other British series on PBS) and your amazing photos, I’m really in the mood to cross the pond and enjoy.

How mundane and uninspired Vita and Virginia might have been had they not discovered each other and been inspired by each other!
Their avant-garde lifestyle was not private then. I have been interested in Sissinghurst for years and my mother used to literally consume books about. Harold Nicolson and Vita Sackville West. The garden and the people are like old friends to me.

I have always felt so wistful that Virginia committed suicide. What a waste. But Vita Sackville West is known to have buoyed up Virginia’s self image. You have given us such images of Vita’s garden, beautiful images and a wonderful context for her.

Incredible tour and so full of history, beauty, and a private view of one of the great English gardens! Thank you for this fabulous tour. The buildings, old bricks, walls with large viewing window, and a rose garden that cannot contain itself within the confines it has been placed and climbs the old walls to get a better view! The White Garden and white lupines…and the straight, perfect, thick, flat topped hedges! I have never seen such well maintained and full hedges! Of course, the Priest’s House, Elizabethian barn turned prison in the Seven Years War, Vita’s room and the meadows that give way to the well-hedged gardens. This is such a beautiful post and I have learned so much…enjoyed so much…admire so much about the old gardens of Great Britain! I am heading to amazon to find Mathew Dennison’s book, Behind the Mask…The Life of Vita Sackville-West. Don’t be surprised if I go missing for awhile….don’t worry…you will find me sitting at the end of a poem!

Don’t change a thing about how you write or photograph or or or. Love you.

    XO T

I really enjoyed reading your post about Sissinghurst and Vita Sackville-West. She was of course lover
to several women, most notably Virginia Woolf (for about a decade) and each was the inspiration and muse of the other.

I love your new caftan but would have to grow a few inches for it or any caftan to look good on me.

Thanks again for the great post.

Sissinghurst looks like such a happy place. The flowers are gorgeous and you certainly dressed for the occasion. You and Sir Winston are also looking very regal in your garden back home. The Italian sure knows what makes you happy.

What funny hats the barn/restaurant wears.
I love your flowing white gown. But what is the pink underneath? We really need more details about your outfits. The caftan in the last photo is exquisite. However, I suspect it’s in part because you’re tall. If it were half as high (OK, I exaggerate. 3/4), it might lose its elegance. But how comfortable it must be, and how satisfying to swish around.

I always learn so much from your posts. I have been to London several times but, haven’t ventured outside the city. Now I want to go to Sissinghurst. Thanks for writing your fun blog.
