A

STYLE SPECIALIST!

BELOW

HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?

I guess I would describe my style as effortless chic with a twist.  Sometimes hearing how others describe your style says it best.  A fellow style blogger, Catherine, from Not Dressed As A Lamb, described my style and I loved what she said, ‘Cherie has a ‘certain something’ about the way she dresses that I can’t quite put my finger on – she has a very sleek style, but at the same time it’s quite eclectic and daring.  She’s chaotically chic, someone who just effortlessly puts outfits together without looking like she’s tried to hard.”   All of this being said, I appreciate all kinds of styles and fashion.

WHAT INSPIRES YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?

Everything.  Wherever I go I am always observing and looking for inspiration, especially vintage and one of a kind pieces.  I love to peruse flea markets, vintage stores, garage sales and consignment stores.  Finding that special piece is so exciting to me.  I often pair my unique finds with current outfits, which give any look an unexpected twist that’s all yours.  I love Nudging myself.

WHAT ACCESSORY CAN YOU NOT DO WITHOUT?

Shoes. I think they are the soul of my style. Ha, no pun intended.  Your shoes say so much about you and your personality.   In fact, I love shoes so much, I have a link up called The Shoe And Tell Fashion Link Up, NOT Just For Shoes, every Monday on my blog  Shoes tell a story and each week I feature all types of shoes where anyone else can share their outfits and shoes as well.

FAVORITE COLOR?

That’s a tough question.  I prefer warm colors.  But, I think if I had to choose one it would be green.  I have green throughout my home and my wardrobe.

DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE PIECE THAT DEFINES YOUR STYLE?

Animal print, specifically leopard.  I have no idea why I’m drawn to it, but I love it.  I have collected animal print vintage coats and handbags for years.  In fact, I need to stop!  Oh, and I almost forgot I also collect animal print shoes.  I will pretty much wear leopard with anything, from florals to stripes.  One of my favorite looks is comfy jeans, a white shirt and a pair of leopard pumps.  Effortless chic with a twist.

WHAT ARE YOUR STYLE STRENGTHS?

I would have to say it’s being able to mix all kinds of things to come up with a stylish look.  I love mixing prints and patterns, high and low, new and vintage, casual and dressy, etc.  I just love playing with clothes and accessories.  And, I love style challenges.  For instance, a friend once challenged me to style a burlap bag.  And, I loved it.  I opened the closed end, cut it to the length I wanted, belted it and wore it as a paperbag skirt.   Shopping my closet and anyone else’s with what they have and coming up with brand new looks. Helping others find their best style.

DO YOU HAVE A STYLE ICON?

Many.  But my absolute style goddess is Coco Chanel.  She was truly a trailblazer and literally changed the world and how women dressed.  I’ve watched and read everything and anything that has been written about her.

WHAT ARE YOUR BEAUTY ESSENTIALS THAT YOU COULDN’T DO WITHOUT?

I do not profess to be a beauty expert at all.  I don’t spend a lot of time on it, but I try.  Here are a few of my must haves:

Clarisonic brush every night to exfoliate (a game changer)

                                      Armani Luminous Silk Foundation

                                      Diorshow Black Mascara

                                      YSL Eyeliner Pencil

                                      Boom Glimmer Boomstick

                                      Bare Minerals Loose Mineral Veil

Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask

                                      Thayer’s Witch Hazel for Toner

DO YOU HAVE REPEAT OFFENDERS IN YOUR CLOSET, IF SO, WHAT ARE THEY?

Oh definitely, yes.  Anything animal print, white shirts of any style, blue oxford shirts, stripes, big comfy sweaters, vintage leopard print coats, other vintage coats, vintage handbags and muffs.

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN OVER 50, OR OVER 40?

1.  Take the time to learn what styles and colors look best on you.  Seeking the help of a professional stylist is invaluable.  They will teach you what looks best on you.  If you don’t want to invest in professional advice, then listen to the people around you.  Ask them what their favorite outfit is that you wear?  What are you wearing when they compliment you?  Is it the neckline? The color?  Just because something looks great on your best friend or a model in a magazine doesn’t mean it will look good on you.  For example, I don’t look good in turtlenecks.  The best neckline for me is a deep v-neck or a ballet scoop. Wearing clothes that suit YOU can literally be life changing.

2. Wear clothes that you are comfortable in.  You won’t look stylish if you are struggling to walk in your shoes or you can’t sit down because your skirt is too tight or too short.

3. Spend time and money on a great haircut and skincare.  You can rock a pair of jeans and tee shirt if your hair is fabulous and your skin is glowing.

4. Be authentic and dress for yourself.

5. Take style risks and try to remain open minded.  Allow yourself to be Nudged.

6.  Don’t be so concerned about what other people may think, exude confidence and smile

DO YOU HAVE ANY STYLE RULES THAT YOU LIVE BY?

I really don’t like style rules.  I have a few personal ones, but they are based on what looks best on me.  For instance,  I’m not a big fan of my upper arms, so I usually don’t wear anything sleeveless, instead I try to find ways to camouflage or distract from them.  Once you discover what looks best on you, then you can make a list of your own individual style rules.

WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONLINE GO TO SOURCES?

Since I am such a lover of vintage, mostly handbags and coats, I shop alot on eBay.  But, if I’m not looking for vintage – Bloomingdales,  Anthropologie, Topshop, Zara, Madewell, Calypso St. Barth, The RealReal, Poshmark, and the Gap.

Don’t forget to shop outside the box…look beyond your regular stores, like your husband’s closet, your grandmother’s cedar chest, your local vintage or consignment store.

DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR DESIGNER THAT YOU ARE DRAWN TO?

I appreciate all types of designers, but I think my favorite is Dolce and Gabbana.  I don’t own too many pieces, but I love their unique, old world sensibility.  Their style is hard to describe because it’s so layered and complex, and they are masters at mixing patterns and prints. Their clothes are classic, but irreverent; bold, but unapologetic; sexy, but elegant.  I am always inspired by Dolce and Gabbana’s enchanting designs.

Since we’re all pet lovers in this blog, I’d like to share with you that earlier this morning, we lost Apollo, our 14 year old golden Labrador, beloved companion to our family, our most loyal friend who never betrayed us, who always showered us with pure, tender, unconditional love. I’ve experienced serious loss since I was a kid many times over but I never thought that losing a pet would be so painful. We cherish the memories and we already miss him. He’s resting in a beautiful spot overlooking vineyards and olive groves , a short distance from the sea. Forever in our hearts.

Cherie is divine… I have subscribed. You/she had me at…DOGS. Hers could have been in the queue at ‘Katnip & Bonz’ with diamond collars, non? Inspirational to women of a certain age who are forever changing their aspect to the sun… love the jeans ETC. Love the leopard. Love the shoes. And, of course, love the DOGS.

Prayers to Ellie’s family…her husband’s post was a perfect tribute to a woman who was a force of nature…so much so that I thought she could defy the odds and live and live. But what she did not have in years, she had in emotional and intellectual technicolor intensity that I think few are capable of. Humor, wit, brutally honest… I am so glad I knew her, just a little, through her writing. And hope Gracie is doing well… I will never forget what she wrote at Thanksgiving last year.

Oh I love these style blogs…mostly because I sadly have no style what so ever…unless you can call comfort frump a style….and those shoes! Makes me embarrassed about my measly 6 or 7 pairs, 2 pairs of which are clogs, and the rest are either loafers or Birkenstock sandals. (oh….but I am forgetting my 3 pair of boots! One tall pair of Merrells, a pair of Eileen Fisher booties and a Moto boot of indeterminate make….oh so chic!) I’m teasing, but really…my style is based on what fits and what is comfortable. I DO draw the line at sweatshirts or tees with cat pictures on them. So there’s that. Thanks for being so stylish…you are giving me life goals!

Bonjour, Contessa! I LOVE HER STYLE and philosophy! I’ve often been gossiped about (I know it, I hear it!!!!!!!!) because of the way I’ve dressed. But as I GROW UP (not older), I realize that smiling through the mud of mudslinging and growing confident over who I am, that this is the best way to fit into the clothing I love. I’m taking some tips from her photos here (I can’t get into her blog from your link) and I honestly am going shopping today to pick up a few new things for school that is starting on Tuesday. I’ve got my pumps ready, a few new skirts, but I need a funky pair of drop fresh water pearl earrings, a animal print jacket (love hers) and a few turtle necks. Bring on school – Madame is ready!

The mix of vintage and new is exactly the look I like…it isn’t as easy as Cheri makes it look though 🙂 It’s hard to find vintage that fits, so I suppose one has to be willing to tailor some items. A leopard furr muff is always useful!!! I have a couple and I adore them. And, my motto is, you can never have too much leopard!!! or too many shoes!!! On another note, my family used to go to Gulf Shores, Alabama every spring break when I was growing up. So many fond memories. Alabama is beautiful. So happy you commented Jeane.

You know I LOVE Cherie because she’s our featured Style Blogger on 1010ParkPlace, along with Hildie Plumpepper! Cherie has an eclectic, easy style. I could put on the same outfits and they would look like they’re wearing me, but Cherie has that certain something that makes her comfortable in most anything she puts on. Cherie–and YOU–have had a big impact on changing my wardrobe from classic, tailored to something like a purple, pleated, satin midi-skirt I’m wearing to the museums in Florence. After all, I’ll be in the presence of the Medici’s! I can’t be drab, now can I? xoxox, Brenda

TO ELLIES FRIEND FROM CANADA AND THOSE OF YOU WHO KNEW ELLIE here is what her HUSBAND wrote on INSTAGRAM &FACEBOOK.
One year ago, Ellie, my wife, died in Montecito CA.
For those of knew Ellie before and or during her 6 years of ALS, you know what a remarkable woman she was. But what you don’t know is how “truly” remarkable she was, as I did.
We fought this monster together for 6 years, along with by our side, and looking back at all of this, I wonder how it was possible to have been so strong and positive as she was.
If you think about ALS for more than 30 seconds, I mean really think of it, of what it is, what it does to you, you die right then. Pissed off she was, furious she was, but never she felt sorry for herself…even at her (our) lowest points, that came from time to time, like a graveyard shift, she had the utmost strength and will to live, not to survive, but to live.
Ellie was a warrior of all warrior, as we say in France “une guerriere”. I became her legs and arms and of we went for 6 years as if nothing was wrong, carrying caregivers with us, breathing machines, masks, wheelchairs, feeding tubes, cleaning supplying, Ellie’s caravan…
Ellie was family less but friends fortunate…Jenny Brisick, Yolanda Hadid, Diandra Douglas, too many to list, you know who you are…. thank you for being there for her….
Early on, when all limbs failed her, she began her blog (via voice recognition software, completely paralyzed from the neck down) in order to communicate with the world…. she then began her “Brocante” online store and did both until the very end…. She was the commander in chief and had an army at her feet, an army of caregivers, that became brocante experts, FedEx shippers, Photographers and I was her General at her command.
She would tell me: “Bunny”, you’d better kiss me because you are going to miss me, with her smile, and I do, and I wish I had kissed her more.
I more than ever realize, that it is only trough memory that Ellie exits (and through Gracie)
So today, as pretty much every day, a little bit of memory fills my day… an image folder of Ellie I was looking at, entitled “happy days”. She is my happy days.I love you darling, she would reply: I love you bunny.
    David

Thanks so much for this. What a lovely tribute David (the one and only “bunny”) has written for Ellie. I am so glad he remembers and treasures the “happy days” after the excruciating, awful illness. I think that many of the Have Decorum readers only slowly realized the truly grim illness she was suffering. She usually put such a spin on it that the reality wasn’t obvious sometimes. David really captures the essence of how Ellie approached the illness, not to merely survive but to live. “To live”. Of course, he had been recruited and commissioned as her “general”. I remember my astonishment when she opened her online store. I thought with a smile about how she would be organizing everyone from caregivers who probably were assigned wrapping parcels and David who would accompany her on shopping missions. I loved the kindness people showed her. Deb Owens leaps to mind –– theirs was a friendship born in a caffè in Paris and she came through for Ellie big-time. I’d like to have friends right here like her! La Contessa, Heather from Lost in Arles met her and loved her. And so many others. Sometimes I thought it was coffee party, tea party, one after another but Ellie’s isolation was lessened by such friends.

There were days on the blog when I would read it and roll my eyes. Or laugh. Or empathize with her frustration over something. When I first emailed her, I thought, feared, perhaps I would get a witty, feisty comment back at my expense but only kindness came my way from Ellie. I had watched my brother become a quadriplegic and die inch by inch. That was our bond in the beginning. I loved sending her photos I had taken and writing to her about my world. And that is what so many people did. They brought her into their worlds as she had brought them into hers.

Gracie thought we were just “virtual friends” but I think we were her link to the outside world. It is amazing how deep a bond was forged between us. And I know that, in spite of her release from such suffering, we still shed tears at the end. And smiled remembering “happy times”.

I cannot see a piece of blue and white without thinking of Ellie and smiling. I think of Teddie a lot.
I see him walking on top of the stonewall. We talked about how traumatic it is not only to lose the ability to walk but to have to part with beloved high heels. Seemingly trivial, but significant to shoe afficionados. I wonder about Gracie from time to time. I wonder how she’s doing and think about the tough deck of cards she was dealt at such a young age. We talked about dying and living. I still wonder who the guy outside in the courtyard was. In such a short time, she and I had a great correspondence, friendship going. I remember that if something neat had happened to me, I’d race to my computer at midnight my time to write her my news so she’d get it when she woke up. It was as if I were racing home when I was a child to share the day’s excitement. She could not answer all of the emails everyone sent to her as she had to save her breath but she read them all. I always thrilled to see a reply from her. We had a lot in common but still had very different lives and personalities…

For David, don’t worry she lives in our memories.
I was worried she was going back home but I received a reply: “Don’t worry. Everything’s organized. Everything’s okay”. I felt she was going home to die. And so it was…

I would define Cherie’s style as “Maximaliste.” Perhaps even “Haute Maximaliste.” “Très Haute Maximaliste”? Why not. There is not a single boring outfit. Take the photo near the top–white T and jeans…..AND a red kimono topper AND spotted (Hereford?) slides. Or the one lower down with a denim/chambray shirt and white jeans….AND fabulous ruffle cuffs on the shirt AND a cool straw bag AND architectural striped shoes.
I can only imagine how much fun she must be, because nobody who has so much pizzaz could possibly be dull. Just look at you, a fellow Maximaliste. Bon vivants.

Another TRIUMPH! This interview has all sorts of gems embedded within it…like…learn to look for stylish pieces outside of the box…as in Box Stores. Look in consignment shops, vintage shops, ebay, raid your husbands wardrobe, look in Nanna’s Attic. There are lurking treasures in all of these off-the-radar places, so add some street-style cred. to your look! Mix it in with your wardrobe and you will get a STYLE NUDGE like no other. I love this blog and have followed Cherie for some time, now. I am always crushing on her shoes and bags and kimonos. She has such a wonderful eye for creating a silhouette that is striking and stand-out wonderful. I have recently picked up the Armani foundation that she mentioned in a 5.5! Armani is a beautiful brand that lasts…and lasts…and lasts. I am very INSPIRED by this post and adore the display of gorgeously, perfectly styled looks….and that new leopard jacket being worn by my FAVORITE CONTESSA! As they say in L.A…. Isn’t that the best foundation? I have tried others and nothing compares. Thank you for all of your wonderful words Lisa, and for letting me know that you are inspired. I am equally inspired, as I have just followed your instagram.

Wonderful post and great questions. You really got to the heart of the matter, I love that!! She was a wealth of inspiration. Love the word NUDGE!! Nudging is a good thing in wardrobe, dressing or life in general!! It is fun to read about women that KNOW themselves so well and celebrate it with their wardrobes. I loved the way you finished the post about what you will be trying and what you were inspired to purchase!!! YOU are also an inspiration, Contessa!! I feel like finding a fun vintage purse now!!

I have arrived home and am sitting at my kitchen table catching up with all the news of the world around me. My Italian is making the cappuccino and I’m indulging in reading your Blog post. What a great source of inspiration this morning! The Leopard prints are Amazing and her long lean looks are spectacular! Hope things have cooled down a bit for you. On the drive home yesterday, there were areas that were over 110 degrees. I melted.

I LOVED this interview. It was chock full of valuable tips. I love Cherie’s authentic style. She is a girl after my heart with all that leopard. I loved her comment about not trying to trudge around in uncomfortable shoes….so true. I am going to try some of her suggested products. Love her blog!!

First prayers for Texas. When we had our catastrophic flood of 2013 from a stormfront that just stalled over our area for 3 or 4 days (like Harvey’s stall which would not move on), we had 1/17th the rain Houston has received and far fewer(but still plenty) homes destroyed. The scope of this disaster in Houston is almost unimaginable but for the photos. So prayers and donations to American Red Cross or others.

Secondly, prayers for Ellie, our friend. She was amazing. Even now, I hear a nagging voice nudging me about this or that. I’m sure she’s wandering around examining items at a flea market, appreciating this antique or that, listening in to our lives (she threatened she would be watching each of her friends while they were having sex – now there’s a thought!) and generally overseeing things! There have been so many times when a glimpse of Ellie has crossed our paths in the past year. So here’s to the most spirited blogger, the incredibly diverse and kind but frank Ellie!

And for Diana, Princess of Wales! Words just don’t arrive at the complexity of her, her overriding kindness to the downtrodden, her beauty and spirit. Prayers and great admiration for the memories that Prince William and Prince Harry have shared and the lovely white garden at Kensington Palace created in her memory. As the English would say, well done, you!

Thanks Contessa or posting both. I read about Cherie and when I saw the pink shoes with the thick, platform heels identical to a pair I gave away, I swear I heard Ellie say to me, “See I told you not to give them away!”. And Cherie’s style is like a kindred spirit to mine. I have a garment rack downstairs loaded with vintage Coco Chanel style suits from my younger days. Coco Chanel forever! It was great learning about Cherie’s unique style! And if she lived close to me, I’d definitely want to get together to talk style over lunch!

    Thanks for a great post!

OMG you are killing me knowing that you have a rack full of Coco Chanel suits! Don’t ever get rid of them. I unfortunately am boardering on being a hoarder, so I rarely get rid of anything. If you’re ever in NYC or New Jersey lets have lunch. Thank you!

      Hi Cherie,

Ah, not Coco Chanel suits but Coco Chanel style suits, of which several were French by other designers, too. I hope that eases your pain! Still, about the suits, I would never get such beautiful fabric or workmanship now. I just have to lose a bit more weight and then I’ll be able to wear them all again. Thanks for the invitation but it’s unlikely that I’ll (sadly) never get to New York or New Jersey as I cannot get valid travel health insurance. If, however, you ever are in Banff or Lake Louise or nearby, let me know and
I’ll go there for lunch with you! I love your style.
