HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE?
I would describe my style as a mix of glam with a big dash of Southern California sportiness mixed in. I have a penchant for dramatic pieces that move well when dressing for an event. During the week I am more prone to uniform basics that allow me to get things done … and still out the door in style with the addition of well chosen accessories!
WHAT INSPIRES YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE?
A deep love for accessories inspire my style always! I have loved accessories since I was very young. That love led me to getting a certificate in Fashion Merchandising, a design degree from UCLA and owning and designing for my own fashion accessory company for years! Some people paint with oils or acrylics … my main medium has always been accessories and clothes.
WHAT ACCESSORY CAN YOU NOT DO WITHOUT?
Living in Southern California … I can not live without my sunglasses and hats! Not only do these accessories offer valuable sun protection … but they are one of the quickest ways to add a quick high dose of style to any outfit.
FAVORITE COLOR?
My favorites color is always in a range of creams and whites, For me they are calming colors that also show texture and line beautifully. Having favorite wardrobe colors makes it easy to build a wardrobe of beloved pieces that withstand time.
DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE PIECE THAT DEFINES YOUR STYLE?
Signature pieces that define my style would definitely be headwear! I am always on the lookout for fabulous hats. I have been designing and refining my turbans for some time now! I have also added crowns to my designs in my online shop. For occasion dressing I always find them a perfect celebratory accessory!
WHAT ARE YOUR STYLE STRENGTHS?
My Style Strengths are definitely that I will take risks with what I wear. I am passionate about clothes and accessories. I dress to please myself … and make my heart happy! At my age I know there are so few things I really have control over … and how I Dress Myself … is definitely one. I am always most concerned with how clothes make Me feel! Feeling truly happy with what I’m wearing … makes my heart happy … which means I have more love and energy to pour into others. I believe what we Wear can be a conduit to truly expressing who we are at the time … and giving us more joy and passion in our daily life!
DO YOU HAVE REPEAT OFFENDERS IN YOUR CLOSET if SO WHAT ARE THEY?
Oh I definitely have repeat offenders in my closet. They are my grab and go … tried and true outfit … that with the fast grab of a couple of accessories … get me out the door in a flash! This summer the piece that has been on a continual repeat is my white linen dress from Anthropologie. With some sleeve detailing … grabbing a great necklace, shoe, sunglasses, hat and bag … I can be ready for any of the weekday destinations! You can hear by now … how I am all about well chosen accessories for a finished chic look.
WHAT ARE YOUR BEAUTY ESSENTIALS THAT YOU COULDN’T DO WITHOUT?
Beauty essentials that I can not due without would definitely begin with my use of Erno Lazlo skincare. I have been a loyal user since I was 18. I was at the counter in Neiman Marcus and I saw a women in her late 60’s with the most amazing skin and beauty. She said she had been using it for decades. She told me how Jackie Kennedy has chosen it even for her own children, I started using it then and to this day … 40 years later because the line has always accommodated my changing skin through the years. Erno Lazlo has had me oiling my face for decades … before the recent trend realized the benefits.
For makeup products I swear by Chanel, especially their liquid foundation. But I do veer form the line when it comes to concealer, where my top choice is always Cle Du Peau.
WHAT ADVISE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN OVER 50, or over 40?
The advice I would give women over 50 is too learn how to have fun and enjoy dressing. I am a firm believer that style and fashion do not belong exclusively to the young. At 58 years old, I can say I have never enjoyed style more! With the investment of time and effort there are style choices out there for all ages and sizes. I believe we all have more to give … when we feel good about how we look! At my age I have also realized there are few things I can control in life … but deciding what I want to wear is definitely one I relish!
DO YOU HAVE ANY STYLE RULES THAT YOU LIVE BY?
My only style rule I live by is to … wear things that make my heart happy! Learning to develop and embrace personal style is a wonderful thing … and can add layers of happiness to even your day to day! I learned years ago to dress for myself … especially at home! There was a time many, many years ago … I dressed for the outside world … but wore my grungy clothes at home. I finally realized how we dress for ourselves at home … says so much about how we feel about ourselves and our lives. I got rid of the stained and grungy old pieces … and invested in cozy loungewear for my day to day at home … active wear that makes working out more fun. I now have clothes for home that I look forward to putting on … and I’m never embarrassed to open the door. I have pieces that are comfortable, functional and tell my inner voices … I am very grateful for my life … and to be me. I actually believe how we dress at home for ourselves … is as important … if not more so … than how we dress outside the home and seeing others.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONLINE GO TO SOURCES?
Online shopping … for me can be a blessing and a curse … in the sense it can be a rabbit hole I can loose hours inside of. I actually decided to take the whole month of September off from shopping online … and I must say it has been wonderful!! I have had not only more money in my accounts … but more creative time as well. With none of my dreaded … should I buy it or not. To be completely honest, I have filled up too many closets … trying to fill myself up after all of my children have left the nest. Guest rooms are also closets these days. So right now I am on a editing, refining and organizing my wardrobe and have found it absolutely invigorating! As I approach 60 in a year and a half … I want to refine my style even more … to celebrate and embrace my years with elegance and gratitude!
But to answer the online site question properly, when I have shopped online, I like to start my search on high end sites like Moda Operandi, Net-A-Porter and Neiman Marcus. Not that I actually shop there very often, but it is a fast and easy way to see new fashion trends that I might be interested in. I am definitely not in the financial bracket to frequent these sights … except on very rare occasions. If I find some ideas that catch my eye, I move down to check out the likes of Anthropologie, J Crew and Zara. Sometimes even Target has some great everyday finds. If it is a concept I absolutely want to explore … I can make one up myself. Growing up I was an avid sewer as my parents owned a fabric store as a side hobby. So when I can’t find something I want online … with a price I am comfortable with … I simply create one. My turban collections are a perfect example. I like mine with a strong, bold presence, that I couldn’t find … so I started designing my own.
DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR DESIGNER YOU ARE DRAWN TO?
I am still loving Donna Karan … especially now with her recent designs for Urban Zen.
~
CARMEN BUSQUETS is definitely my favorite STYLE ICON of the moment.
Well there you go my dear! I answered all of your questions! Thank you for your interest my friend. I have really enjoyed pondering my style philosophy and I am even more eager to edit and purge my closets to further refine and define my wardrobe!
