September 28, 2017 162 Comments

HERE WE GO AGAIN!

TIME to hook up with CINDY at https://cindyhattersleydesign.com

TO INTERVIEW a WOMAN OVER 50 who oozes with STYLE.

I do believe this is our 4th installment together.

Now the fun here is to read about my GAL and ALSO POP over to CINDY’s POST and read about HER GAL!

COMMENTING Is ENCOUAGED on BOTH BLOGS out of respect to US (for the effort and time commitment) and the WOMEN who allowed us into their THOUGHTS on AGING and sharing their SECRETS and WARDROBE.

However, if YOU do not have the TIME WE GET IT!!!!!!!!!

JST

 JAN SHER-TUCKERMAN is A FASHIONISTA!

I met JAN in SAN FRANCISCO!

She walked up to me at a TZIPORAH SALAMON’s book signing and said, “I FOLLOW YOUR BLOG!”

Of course I was BLOWN away by this………..as this was the THIRD time I had been RECOGNIZED in PUBLIC!

Long story short I started to FOLLOW JAN on Instagram and found out she lives in ARIZONA.She makes BEAUTIFUL one of a kind handbags out of VINTAGE materials!YOU MUST TAKE A LOOK AT HER WEBSITE!

HER WEBSITE click on her website!

HER ETSY SHOP HERE TO SHOP HANDBAGS!

She has grown children in the area and comes to California often. She also has GRAND CHILDREN so I had them for LUNCH as BANKSY was a DRAW!!!!!!After she left it HIT me that JAN would be the perfect VICTIM for MY AGELESS STYLE partnership with the lovely CINDY HATTERSLEY and thought she would be a GREAT one to INTERVIEW!

JAN has been a YOGA instructor for many years and is an ARTIST in her own RIGHT!

“The daughter of a scrap yard owner, she developed an early appreciation for found and seemingly ephemeral forgotten objects. With her father encouraging this spirit of imagination and re-invention she became a serious student of collectibles with a keen sense of the history, form and material composition of her objects of study.”

She LOVES COLOR just like ME!

She does ALL the work herself………just like I did when we settled into OUR HOME Of the last 24 years.

Take a peek!

I believe those are BOTTLE Tops glued to the side of the mirror!

Jan recently had a GARAGE SALE and I was BLOWN AWAY by HOW ORGANIZED SHE WAS.

SEE HER INSTAGRAM  @janshertuckerman

She had EVERYTHING SORTED BY STYLE!!!!

The frosting on THE CAKE was I had NEIGHBORS who had recently moved to ARIZONA from my HOOD and I asked her if she would have them over to tell them where to go for this and that!TO MY ASTONISHMENT SHE DID!!!!!!I find it SO RARE these DAYS that PEOPLE actually FOLLOW THROUGH on THEIR WORDS!

How would you describe your style?

I dress for myself.  No one else.  I’ve never been one to follow the crowd or be label conscious. As both an artist and a daily yogini, and living in the desert, my style is either extremely casual or totally unconventional.

I’ve collected vintage clothing since I was a teenager and I love combining outlandish finds with contemporary pieces, such as the perfect jeans or the little black dress. My petite stature of five feet tall and size 4 1/2 shoes limits me being a candidate for following a lot of current fashion, which is so okay by me.

What inspires your signature style?

Traveling near and far, and scavenging for the one of a kind item, inspires me to mix up my style.  Travel stirs up the spontaneity to bring out the unique things in my closet from around the globe, especially anything done by hand.  Extraordinary beadwork, unique embroidery, tooling on old pee wee boots from the 1940’s, woven huipil garments from Guatemala….most of these are a lost art and have been discarded or under appreciated.  Also, old movies and photographs demonstrate to me that most garments of today are manufactured mass produced pieces, instead of carefully crafted works of art.

What accessory can you not do without?

Without a doubt, the accessory I carry every day is one of my own handcrafted jst satchels.  It’s the first thing people see and the item commented on most frequently.  I adore being my own advertisement for my artwork.  Nothing pleases me more than to sell something off my shoulders.

And my yoga mat and water bottle, not an accessory, but a necessity!

What is your favorite color?

The color that sets my soul on fire is orange and all of the variations: cantaloupe, tangerine, coral, burnt orange, and brick orange.  To me, orange is a neutral color.  And of course, black…. although over the years I’ve become a little immune to all black attire.  It’s a real easy trap to fall into because it is so easy to whip on.  The huge exception being black shoes.  One simply cannot own enough black shoes and boots.

Do you have a signature piece that defines your style?

I have worn some form of a Cartier watch for at least 25 years.  I wear it 24/7, except while practicing yoga.  I always feel like I am ready to go in a moment’s notice that way for some reason.

I have created several pair of unmatched earrings and love to mix them up.  They hang as little charms on tiny hoops. I’ve combined all sorts of things, such as: Tahitian pearls, little diamonds from my parent’s old jewelry parts and my father and grandfather’s Shriner lapel pins and have had them made into little jewelry memories for my ears.  I have a stack of old tribal silver bracelets that are very special to me.  Wearing them all together is my right hand’s habit.

However, the single piece that makes me feel the most spectacular is the talisman ball necklace my husband had created for me in Santa Fe.  It is fashioned with half being a porcelain compass and the other half embellished in gold and silver.  It is meant as a good luck piece for safe traveling and it is inscribed by the artist with “jst forever,” by my husband’s wishes.

What are your style strengths?

I would say the biggest strength in my personal style is not giving a damn about what others think of what I am wearing on any given day or night.

Also, knowing not to follow trends of any type. It usually does not make me feel like myself. Being confident in the now and accepting the body that I was born with usually is what makes me tick…

Do you have a style icon?

Of course, I do!  Her name is Millicent Rogers, a socialite, fashion icon and art collector. She was the granddaughter of Standard Oil tycoon, Henry Huttleston Rogers, and an heiress to his wealth. She spent time in Austria, and combined wearing traditional dirndls with her Mainbocher and Schiaparelli couture.  She was a champion in combining ethnic with traditional clothing. She fell in love with the Southwest aesthetic when she moved to Taos, New Mexico.  She immersed herself in local culture and started collecting chunky silver and turquoise Native American jewelry, which she wore with broomstick skirts, boots and peasant blouses that were made in New York. She was an early champion of southwest style, art and jewelry and brought international attention to this style.

My equal love of the Southwest has given me the opportunity to emulate her look, in any small way I can.  It’s a comfortable image for me to attain and my circle skirts collected over many years are mostly hand done and one of a kind.  I love to pair the skirts with my cowboy boot collection that is equally wonderful.

What are the beauty essentials that you couldn’t do without?

Tom Ford “wild ginger” lipstick.  I am addicted to lipstick and feel absolutely naked without it.

Le Labo Santal 23 perfume.  My signature and only fragrance.  My bestie says it smells like trees, which is fine by me.

Surgical gauze squares for washing my face with a little texture.

Systyne eye drops

“10” mascara from Walgreens

Tattooed eye brows

Kiehl’s Crème de Corps body cream

Cle du peau undereye concealer

Do you have repeat offenders in your closet, if so, what are they?

Zhandra Rhodes custom orange silk chiffon couture dress.  Zhandra herself, fit the dress on me.  I will never forget her wild pink hair and asking me where I was wearing the dress, as she didn’t want me to be duplicated at any event.  I assured her that where I was going in it would never be an issue. It is singularly the sexiest thing in my closet. It reeks of sensuality and soft lushness and fits me superbly.

A silk hand dyed and handmade palazzo pant and top ensemble I acquired in Malibu at least twenty-five years ago. Every time I wear it, which has been a lot over the years, I feel happy and ready to party

A black chiffon dress from 1920’s that I bought in a Paris flea market.

My collection of jean jackets that just keep on getting better as the years go by. My favorite is one with a applique of a bulldog on the back from the University of Georgia.  It was wildly mismarked as very inexpensive at a L.A. vintage store. I have taken lately to add old needlepoint remnants to the backs of some of my plain ones.

Outrageous vintage velvet, sequined and beaded vests from Transylvania that I bought in a tiny store in Budapest.

What advice do you have for women over 50, or even 40?

Practice yoga!  True beauty and happiness lies within.  I’ve been a yogini since I was a teenager and nothing makes life better than the union between your body and your mind being one.

Take care of your skin!  Do it regularly or regret it forever.

Don’t underestimate the importance of sleep.  It’s tonic for the soul!

Do what you love with passion and patience.  Someday it will pay off.

Learn to love being by yourself.  Explore meditating and keep a regular time to practice the art.

Cultivate stellar friends and treat them like the rare jewels that they are in your life.

Don’t be afraid to extend yourself to someone in ill health by dropping off food.  They will appreciate it more than you know, and you will reap the benefits by helping someone in need.

Trust your instincts. Follow your gut.  If someone makes you feel uneasy, let them go.

Live for today.  Don’t wait until tomorrow.

Do you have any style rules that you live by?

Never, ever, ever copy anyone else.  To me, it is not a form of a compliment.

Get the best sunglasses you can afford and wear them every day.

If something is uncomfortable, I don’t buy it.

If you find the perfect something, consider buying duplicates.

Have a professional do your makeup once a year and change your palette.

Dressing jeans up is such a plus in packing.  Finding the perfect fit is essential.

Pack light and wear stuff twice on a trip.  When in doubt, do without!

It is worth spending more on accessories.  We wear them more frequently than clothing.

Be careful of sale stuff.  I love a good bargain, but sometimes they are the items that you discard the quickest.

What are your favorite online go to resources?

I’ve been an eBay shopper since they began.  I truly think I wiped the country out of size 4 ½ vintage shoes.

Vintage Martini.com, Antique Dress.com, The Outnet, Etsy handmade goods, Monrow.com, American Eagle Outfitters,

Do you have a particular designer you are drawn to?

Christian La Croix and Pierre Frey fabrics for my one of a kind satchels

Oh Antonio! What fab compliments! One way I have found to keep my closet stellar is to automatically hang your things up after you wear them or back from the dry cleaners..and, the correct matching hangers is required…when I pack for a trip, I seem to weed out stuff and put them immediately in the give away box. And, a woman told me a long time ago that when you buy something new you should “introduce” it to all the other things that it might be paired with in color and style. Best, j

I am smiling that Jan bought the villa/house when her husband was out of town. My father went out of town once. Somehow a scotty puppy took up residence when he was away (and my father had not wanted a dog. It took 3 years for my father to adjust but soon after it was “his dog”).

Any woman who has red shoes is my BFF! I love red. I don’t often wear it but when I do, watch out! Attenzione!

Elizabeth – when I bought the orange blouse at 90% off, I also bought $1,000 worth of other clothes for $100. total. Just now some of the clothes are fitting me. Most were designer clothes from Germany. I felt like I had gone to heaven. I shouldn’t need anything except gardening clothes from now till about 20 years from now as they are all classic styles. Speaking of which, I read Cindy’s blog and loved it, too. Talk about classic!

To be a guest in her home is to be delighted from the moment you step into her magical and beautiful home and kitchen (that she designed and mosaic-ed and antiqued herself) until the last morsel has slid down your throat. To be her friend is to be supported and cherished and pampered – physically and emotionally. This lovely article only scratches the surface of the inspiration Jan is. LOVE THIS WOMAN!!

Dearest Nancy, we have been through many years and lives together. Cooking for you has always been a delight. (No nuts, no meat, tons of chocolate). But, the amazing thing about us is our connection despite the odds. You are the STRONGEST woman I know. Xo j

Countess , your egg salad was divine. And served byYOU! What more can a person want? A fav and fab fact about our home, 13 years ago, was that I bought it when my husband, tom, was OUT OF TOWN! Yep, he was surprised to say the least when he returned. This home was the perfect palette of good bones to build upon. I toiled, for a year, everyday, doing the various mosaics I envisioned.. I was fifty years old and it took amazing strength to accomplish and finish. I was the only woman ,with a sea of subs on the job, many who spoke no English. They were the ones who stood back and grinned as they had never seen such a circus going on! Creating the three shower interiors was demanding. With no electricity, it was either 20 degrees or 120 degrees inside the house. I ate like a lumberjack to keep up my energy. I would regard this time one of the best periods of my life.

Hi, Elizabeth. What a great blog post! I love the colourful clothes. Recently I have become very fond of orange. I have blouse I bought last year at 90% off (a boutique was moving so had to sell everything). It’s an orange blouse that was just a bit snug last year so I put it away and forgot about it. Now it fits perfectly! Suddenly I am wearing colours. At the same sale I bought a red jacket that I adore. It has such fine workmanship and on the inside it has a red lining with white polka dots. Such fun. So I loved reading about Jan’s colourful wardrobe! It made me feel a lot better that she explained that her closet had been a bedroom… I love her wall of handbags and I really love Jan’s hat. I love the vintage photos on her wall. I was thinking of taking mine down but seeing hers, have decided to leave my own up. Often, other people have such narrow fashion parameters so it’s great to find someone as inspired and free-willed as Jan! many thanks for such a great post about a true inspiration! Ann

Elizabeth, you have really uncorked the Genie’s Bottle this time and once the smoke cleared this incredible person stood with a magic carpet to take us away. Okay…she is a very creative Genie and she made a coat out of the magic carpet…that is certainly imbued with magical creative powers. Reading Jan’s story in her collections, beautiful 4 1/2 size vintage shoes, in bottle-cap encrusted mirrors, in cowgirl boots of every color and make and…a jean jacket collection…so enviable I had tears in my eyes! I studied the pictures before reading the Story of Jan and the rod of her personality can be seen in the work she has created and pieces she has collected AND ORGANIZED (first organized artist I have ever encountered) closet that inspires me to…well..go up and look at mine..and weep. After studying all the pictures you have included here, I read her story and her words…her words are penetrating. I kept nodding my head and thinking that this woman is so wise…spiritual wise…the kind of knowledge and understanding that goes deep. I discovered a caring person and one who will act of their beliefs. Jan has taken the pain and fear of a breast cancer battle and made art. She is one who embraces life after looking to that horizon that leads to the other side when the world is done with us. I will follow some of her links and will renew my interest in the surgical gauze strips still left in their packages. I will check out Varda handmade shoe, and perhaps spritz myself with some La Labo Santal 23 at the perfume counter. Thank you, Elizabeth for introducing us to Jan and her work! I could write a book about the southwest and spirituality, but I need to leave you here as it would take too much time. Loved this interview!!!!

La contessa: the belt is not Judith Lieber. It’s a great one from India. The white sculpture behind me in one of the pics is on our property and it was done by John Bartalameo, a fab ITALIAN man! The name of the sculpture is “solstice” and four times a year, the sun shines directly through it during each solstice. The purple wall is the entry way to our home and continues all the way through the glass door .

So uplifting! Love the colors– not me, but I appreciate them!

And WOW on her great legs!!

You look very Oscar Wilde in that scarf.

Contessa– I have come to a solution for fast shade in my hurricane-depleted back yard. I am going to plant PLANTAIN plants. They grow quickly, are exotic, and will give us food we like!

Plantains in the banana family, not the herb! If you’ve ever has tostones (unripe) or maduros (ripe) at a Caribbean restaurant, then you’ve tasted them.

      Jan, you’re welcome!
Contessa, I trust you weren’t offended by the Oscar Wilde comparison. That scarf is
      so dramatic.

Oh my goodness, Jan is adorable! I have a vintage handbag collection (not nearly as large as hers). I should display them better! I like her taste in pooches as well! I am going to check out her bags. They look amazing. You did it again Elizabeth! Bravo!

Thanks so much, Cindy, for the compliments. My other two doggies did not make the pics. Standard poodle and labradoodle a little miffed this morning. Best, jan
