Well, Lady W, formerly known as La Contessa, thank goodness you have a diagnosis and a conscientious doctor to oversee your treatment. Being tall, thin and elegantly unique are all positive markers for better than average outcome. Ten times better than average outcome. I’m confident you’ll overcome and live on into your dotage with Mr. Scientifico. Take those meds religiously. Hopefully the side effects are minimal. Fingers crossed. Reading through some of the comments … my goodness you get so MANY comments … I think an air purifier is an excellent idea. Perhaps your fingers have already done the tapping and Amazon has one on the way. I also agree that a change in primary care docs is in order. I look forward to your Ageless Style victim coming to us from Holland … and, yes, I always receive an email alerting me to a new La Contessa … oops, Lady W … post. Love the long sweatshirt, housecoat number … I’m always cold too. Particularly hands and feet. Wear your mask, take your meds and keep us posted. xo

so my friend…don’t know how to add comments on your webpage…i’m ancient after all, but not complaining?
I definitely think you should be LADY WINDERMERE!
i hate taking antibiotics, would love to be losing weight, as long as it’s not due to cancer, and wonder if the cure is worse than the disease?
I’m so sensitive to them, that I never feel like myself when taking them…and love feeling like myself. You look absolutely MAR-VEL-OUS, and hoping that they turn around whatever is ailing you. Wish SF would allow me to take your chickens, but I’m sure the raccoons would appreciate them too.
Love you,
J -
I think that is a scary diagnosis, but now I’m curious because I have been experiencing some of those same symptoms. I think I have irritable bowl syndrome though. I hate that you have to get rid of your chickens but your health must come first! The Italian is such a sweet man. We are very lucky women and now that the politics have changed what will we talk about. I love that robe thing! I need one of those in my life! Walking blanket sold me! These people should pay you for your advertising! Not just them but a lot of people!

Wow, now I had time to read the whole blog. So glad your lung doctor has confirmed that you have the Lady Windermere sickness and that it can be cured with the antibiotics. Interesting to hear that it comes from birds but sad that you need to get rid of the chickens. I remember when I had really bad asthma and took medication daily and if I visited friends with birds I could barely breath. Luckily my asthma is over but I do get bronchitis when I get the flu.
Hope you get over this cure quickly and regain your health asap. You can’t lose more weight! You’ve gotten very thin, but you’re still as beautiful as ever. Your energy and character is always so uplifting!
Oh… so exciting that you mentioned your next post being about a woman in Holland! Can’t wait to read it.

Dear Contessa, so pleased you have found a caring specialist to help you undertake the healing journey. As many others have said knowing is sometimes overwhelming but far better than not having a confirmed answer. My hope is the antibiotics have the desired result without any side effects. I know it will be a sad day parting with the chickens .
Clever and kind Italian helping the spiders. Keep up with your little purchases to add some cheer to your days.
All best wishes. xx

Ciao Bella,
Your new specialist sounds like a peach and you’ll be in good hands. All will be well and I’m sure there are probably other niggling things in your life that are the result of your Elegantly Named Ailment which will right themselves with your treatment. Thank goodness we still have antibiotics that work but you’ll have to watch you keep your gut health up for the duration. As for the bedside manner of your regular doctor, I’m with the chorus here and suggest it’s time for a change!
Your chicken days are over but at least you’ve got the best photos that any chicken wrangler could hope for their portfolio!!

VIA EMAIL;Elizabeth,
Its great you have a diagnosis and a treatment plan!
And a doctor who seems to care!
In terms of a question to ask your doctor, I would ask about probiotics if you already have not.
Antibiotics kill good and bad bacteria in your system. To protect it, you need to replenish it with probiotics. Ask him about how and when to take probiotics while on antibiotics. How many hours after you take antibiotics to take probiotics. You do not want one canceling out the other.
Pharmaca is an integrative pharmacy and they have really good probiotics and knowledgable staff. Whole Foods also has very good probiotics. Usually good probiotics need to be refrigerated because they are live.Best of luck in your recovery and kick some bird disease butt!

Elizabeth, I am 80, same age as Sandra Sallin who I follow. I have heart disease but it is contained now and I really don’t have many health problems at all. As you are 20 years younger, I suggest you do the following:
Get rid of that GP and find a doctor who will make a health plan for you and contact you when certain tests are due etc. that’s all very simple.
Also, eat probiotics like yoghurt as one of your followers has said, and organically, as another has said. I had forgotten that animals are injected with antibiotics, that fills me with horror?
Fortunately, you probably have a Mediterranean diet and that is best, as long as your appetite comes back. I wish you all the best, especially with COVID rampaging through your country. One good thing, you have gotten rid of that hideous former administration so that may brighten your days from now on too.
We have a small population here in Australia and were able to contain the virus early, but it’s still here and pops up just when we think it has died.
Happy New Year to you and your lovely husband.-

Okay, I’m not a doctor, but it sounds like they’re saying that there are many differences in what people experience but 25% might die from any cause. So what? It doesn’t say how old the people in the study were. Nor do they say how severe the cases were, how long they went without treatment, or if there were other underlying conditions. And, how does this compare with the prognosis of healthy 60-year olds dying from any cause in 5 years. Just because the average life expectancy for women aour age us somewhere around 80, it’s only an average. Isn’t it fair to say that roughly 25 percent of us won’t live that long and another 25 percent will exceed expectations? And, didn’t your doctor say that many of us are walking around with it but just don’t know it? My uneducated guess is that since this is a difficult disease to diagnose, the people in the study were either really old and suffering from other age-related symptoms and/or had been harboring the bacteria for quite some time. This is a perfect example of Dr. Google giving only part of the story and leaving the reader to imagine the worst.
But Mr Scientifico is a genius…and a kind-hearted soul!

Dearest Elizabeth…
So many wonderful suggestions here.
Probiotics, for certain. I prefer to eat or drink mine and love kombucha, flavored kefir water and Greek yogurt. I am prone to tummy troubles and these have helped tremendously and taste delicious.
I would inquire about a pneumonia vaccine, and flu also if you haven’t already had them. I’ve not been a huge fan of such vaccines in the past, but now that I’m well into my 60s and with the pandemic, I’ve decided to err on the side of caution in such matters.
You’re looking beautiful and radiant despite the diagnosis…and that last paragraph says to me that 75% do recover, which I have no doubt you will!

Good morning CONTESSA
Thank goodness you finally got a correct diagnosis for some of your symptoms. I like that the specialist has moved fast on getting you treatment.
Hopefully if your other symptoms still persist after a few months the specialist will clue in and try to find out what is causing them.
The GP is really odd – one would think you’d get a call – want to confirm treatment etc. Or at least say – finally a diagnosis!
I would ask the lung specialist if one would have to go on oxygen at some point with this syndrome. Also, has he had many patients with Lady W or is this quite rare for the area that you live in?
Besides taking antibiotics is there anything else you need to be doing? Will you be having to have scans etc every few months/year?
I hope the chickens get a home close by so you can continue to have fresh eggs. Nothing can beat a fresh egg.
Your readers/followers are all behind you for a GOOD recovery tho it will take some time.-
THE GP IS TOO YOUNG AND HAS NO EXPERIENCE WITH A 60 PLUS YEAR OLD!
TIME TO GET A NEW ONE……..I have tried BEFORE but the GOOD ones or OLD ones aren’t taking NEW PATIENTS!!!
ITS ALL BEEN A BIT TOO MUCH NOW…………..I tried NOT to YELL AND SCREAM as I do NEED THESE PEOPLE………BUT the fact is they saw my LUNGS condition in 2014 again in 2018 and now in 2020………………NO ONE SAID ANYTHING TO ME THAT I RECALL.I need to go back in correspondence and research the notifications as someone said this is MALPRACTICE.
EVEN the DOCTOR that contacted me in 2020 said all looks fine in her email but yet I was sent to a LUNG DOCTOR!!!AND he showed me the difference between 2018 and TODAY!SO< SHE SHOULD GET A GOOD RANT FROM ME!THINK I WILL DO THAT! Goodness, “Rope in a Tub” is quite clever. I save spiders and occasionally find one in the tub. It is difficult to get them out without injuring them.
I am sorry you are having to rehome your chickens. Did the doctor state this was necessary? Since you already have the Madame’s condition?
Do you think this is the same illness as the “bird flu” that made the rounds a number of years ago. Lady W sounds much more genteel. On another note, I have recently scared myself by going onto Internet and researching a recent condition of Husband’s. When I mentioned to the doctor I had done some research, I was told not to assume that all on Internet will refer to your situation. Sometimes too much information. He had a bone marrow biopsy. Turns out, it was not a bad experience, and, for most part, all is well. A condition that needs to be monitored, but no symptoms.
Air purifiers may help and stay inside on bad air days.
Stay safe!

I tend to be on the ‘Scientifico’ side so when you asked what questions you might ask the doctor, my mind immediately started thinking. From reading your post, you have made pro-health lifestyle changes but you might ask what you might do from the perspective of lifestyle changes to maximize your improvement. Possibly ask if gentle cardio exercise might build up your lungs. Once you start taking more than one antibiotic, I recommend asking about any possible negative interactions of the meds. My father had a device where he blew into a bottle to raise a ball – the purpose was to strengthen his lungs. I think it is called a lung exerciser. You might ask if that would help or if there are other lung exercises you might perform to strengthen them. I really enjoy your posts and send wishes for healthy improvements.

For all the antibiotics ahead, something for your MICROBIOME HEALTH: https://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2021/01/24/how-does-the-microbiome-affect-your-immune-system.aspx?ui=91aa58067da4752eddd0d90f11a2cf9a1365c1d69aa253bfaea52de21bd6c7ec&cid_source=dnl&cid_medium=email&cid_content=art1ReadMore&cid=20210124&mid=DM784022&rid=1066745559
“Your immune system and gut microbiome share a symbiotic relationship and your immune function is largely dependent on the state of your gut
More than 99% of your genes come from microbes, not your chromosomes ”FOR YOUR FOOD INTAKE WHILE UNDERGOING INTENSIVE ANTIBIOTIC TREATMENTS:
“One simple strategy that will protect your microbiome is to avoid antibiotics. While they may be necessary to combat an active infection, the vast majority of antibiotics you’re exposed to come from food. Animals raised in concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs) are routinely fed antibiotics that you then ingest when you eat that animal. That’s one of the reasons why I strongly support and recommend eating organic, as organically raised animals are not allowed to be given antibiotics unless the animal is actually ill. CAFO animals are also more prone to carry antibiotic-resistant bacteria.”
“with a robust diversity of beneficial bacteria in your gut, you’re effectively able to block infection from occurring even though you may be exposed to dangerous pathogens.”
“We’re now realizing that the boundary between infectious or communicable diseases and noncommunicable diseases may not be as rigid as we used to think,” Dietert says.
“People have been able to show that if you install the wrong microbe into your gut microbiome — one that’s dysfunctional and not very robust — you can wind up with a predictably-increased risk of very specific noncommunicable or chronic diseases.
We never thought that was the case, but there’s evidence emerging, really within the last couple of years, that [chronic diseases] are all about microbial management. So, understanding your body, understanding your genetics and taking advantage of that, [can allow you] to be naturally healthy.”

Wow, Lady W, this is pretty wild. But thank goodness you finally have an answer. And personally, I think it is scandalous that your regular MD hasn’t been communicating properly. YOU are a strong and amazing woman, and you will absolutely manage through this. (besides, we do what we must.)
Birds! Yikes! How crazy is that?
A little sidenote: your rope for the spiders. I am shaking my head and shaking my head and shaking my head, and yet your kindness and sensitivity to all creatures is so perfectly illustrated in that act.
Sending virtual hugs for strength and healing, xo

Hello Contessa, Now you know how Tippi Hedren felt! You might have addressed this before, but do you have an air purifier in your house? Breathing dust and particulates is never good for you, but with respiratory problems might stir up even more trouble. I hope your new regime will be the solution to your problems.
–Jim
p.s. I have posted the results of my quiz, if you want to check how well you did!

YES AN AIR PURIFIER MIGHT HELP!
I LOVED READING THE ANSWERS AND HOW MANY PEOPLE GOT IT CORRECT!
DO ANOTHER ONE!IT WAS GOOD OLD FASHION FUN!
THANK YOU SO MUCH!

Your new lung doctor sounds like a gem. I would ask her for suggestions for a new primary care doctor. Yours needs to be fired if he had these results for years and didn’t bother to do anything. And all you needed was a prescription for antibiotics!
I hope you have a stock of P95 masks for when you have to be around a lot of people because it sounds like you REALLY don’t want to get COVID. When can you get vaccinated? Even then, you have to be super careful while your body gets to work making antibodies.
Pre-COVID, we were told that the rise in allergies and some other conditions was because of our excessive cleanness, that kids who grow up with animals or on farms have fewer allergies, etc. Exposure to low levels of germs is good because your body learns to fight them. But sometimes what usually makes you stronger can kill you. I read about a woman who nearly died from a bacteria she caught while gardening. We are all on a tightrope between being too lax and being too careful. Of course, not all microbes are equal; some are easily vanquished while others are treacherous.
I wish you luck in the battle against Mycobacterium avium!-

When I told Gary about Lady Windemere Syndrome he asked, “Is that when you are unwell unless you’re living at Downton Abbey?” That is the answer off to Downton Abbey you go! Better than antibiotics!

I am sure with the diagnosis and proper medicine, you’ll be as good as new! I “found” the 40 pounds you lost, so I can mark this ailment off my list of things I might have! I am tall— but no longer slim, so my prognosis will be for something that affects tall, slightly pudgy older ladies!????

VERY FUNNY……………..FAT MAKES YOU LOOK YOUNGER MY MOTHER ALWAYS SAID AS SHE NEVER LOOKED HER AGE!
I HOPE YOU ARE RIGHT!
THANK YOU!

Regarding the diagnosis- remember:FACTS ARE FRIENDLY. You are a posative person and I believe that in itself will aid your recovery. 🙂
For now, baby steps: 1)give the birds away and 2)TAKE _ALL_ THE MEDICINE.
It sounds like the lung Doc is conscientious. Glad you found a good one!
Maybe “sonomachicks” can give you some help in re-homing the feathered flock?
Regarding the spider rope- GENIUS! We are a spider saving family. I have always caught any indoor spiders and walked them outside. Both of my daughters have taken up this mission and they rescue any little friends as well. I think GP is very clever and has a good heart! <3-
SONOMA CHICKS ALREADY HAS OFFERED…………I NEED TO SEE HER PLACE ANYWAY!!!
SHE IS A DELIGHT!
I LIKE IT YOU FOLLOW DIRECTION WELL!!!!!
HA HA HA………………..I ADORE HER CARDS!

I am sorry to hear about your new diagnosis, but it is better to know than to remain in the dark. I can’t wait until this pandemic is under control so I can travel north to see you. Take care, Donna
