THE CLOSET ADDITION

August 19, 2020 134 Comments

Hello Everyone!

I have some FUN NEWS TO SHARE for ME!I was LUCKY enough to get a WALK~IN CLOSET ADDITION!

As you know I have a THING for CLOTHES!If I like it and its made its way home with me I most likely will Not part with it for along long time! That is just the way I am MADE!

It took me a long time to figure OUT SALE SHOPPING is AWESOME but ONLY IF YOU CAN BUY THE ENTIRE OUTFIT!

My wardrobe has NO JEANS and ONE pair of SHORTS I have NEVER worn!

It does have a couple pairs of pants but the majority of the pants are linen & velvet and they go with a TOP and or jacket.I adore the BRAND called BRYN WALKER………I have chatted them up before!I first discovered them in Walnut Creek in the mall. They ALWAYS had a SALE RACK OUTSIDE!

They now reside in BERKELEY.Two shops and have a website as well.

FULL LINEN PANTS would go down to $20.00!!I kid you NOT!That was back in the DAY.

They always have SALES first its 20 % then 50% then 70%!!!

I WAS A SALE SHOPPER GOTTA GET THAT BARGIN!

Then a light Bulb went OFF some years ago in their dressing room!

GET THE ENTIRE OUTFIT ELIZABETH!

YOU will look BETTER and be happier in the LONG RUN!

I DO ALL MY IN STORE SHOPPING WITH THEM.

Then I have MY SOURCES I am ALWAYS sharing on INSTAGRAM!

GREEN SUPPLY VINTAGE ~ Instagram & ETSY

CHATEAU BEL AGE BOUTIQUE ~ Instagram

JENNAFER GRACE COLLECTIONS ~ Instagram, ETSY & Website

CARLA CHRISTOPH DESIGNS ~ Instagram & Website

ARE MY GO TO PEOPLE ON LINE! NOW YOU KNOW ALL MY SOURCES!

I did NOT LINK THEM as I AM LAZY AND HOT!IT has been 100 degrees this last week maybe MORE AND HUMID,whichWE NORTHERN CALIFORNIAN’s are NOT USE TO AT ALL!

JUST COPY AND PASTE TO GOOGLE THEM!

( if you need help with that just tell me in comments!)

Here WE go back to THE CLOSET REMODEL……………….

Foundation was laid out in JANUARY/FEBRUARY.

A hot tub was REMOVED and an architect was hired.

THE CEMENT POUR was done a bit later.CAN you guess which one here is THE ITALIAN?

There HE IS on a different DAY!

NOW the framing has started!

I had to LOSE these windows which I LOVED.

Can you get an idea of the EXISTING CLOSET SIZE?

8 by 10 feet

WHICH I SHARED WITH THE ITALIAN!

I might ADD he had some empty space on his wall………….

This will be added to the closet!Another 8 by 10 FEET!

NOW, I AM GETTING EXCITED!

There was a BIG LAG in building;

due to the COUNTY INSPECTORS not working because of the PANDEMIC.

THEODORE WINKING AT YOU!

I used MY SONS old room to STASH MY CLOSET OF CLOTHING!

Then my SON’s GORGEOUS GIRLFRIEND had to move some of her belongings to hang with MINE!

( She moved out of her old apartment.)

This was all TEMPORARY except for the fact I moved out of my closet in February!

I wanted to take my time and LOOK at each piece and decide to KEEP, TOSS or maybe keep if SPACED ALLOWED!I know how the ITALIAN OPERATES……..when he is ready then all has to be done in a timely manner!THAT MEANS YESTERDAY for him!

Here is one of his three piles!

It took him all of TEN MINUTES maybe less to EVACUATE THE OLD CLOSET!

The rolling rod at the foot of OUR BED!

Housed SOME of the CAFTANS!

NOLLIE……..GRAND DOG NUMBER ONE!

TONQUE ALWAYS OUT!

BANKSY is VERY JEALOUS of her VISITS!

SHE TELLS HIM, “I WAS HERE FIRST PIG I’M NOT MOVING!”

PILLOW became hers on her recent stay with us!

Italians second pile of clothing……….

Sword on Right was The Italians GREAT GRANDFATHERS used in the Great War of 1914-1918.

Now we are getting somewhere!

I am standing in the old closet looking at what will be THE NEW CLOSET!

See the brick tiles?

That is where the old closet stopped and the wall with the windows stood.

Standing in the ADDITION.

Looking back……..as you can see I had not moved everything OUT by the time CONSTRUCTION BEGAN!

Actually a few pieces made their way back into the closet as the PANDEMIC SOARED and MY PATIENCE had all but given up!I live in a STUFFED HOUSE which I have Enjoyed immensely these last few months. However, even the CLUTTER and CHAOS had me on edge!

I just learned NOT TO NOTICE IT!

The old floor I wanted to keep but the ITALIAN after about a two minute discussion

said , “NO!”

It would drive him CRAZY so off he sends me to find flooring during THE PANDEMIC!

I found it at the first spot I stopped.

I was the ONLY person in the shop and I’m lucky most of the time I know what I LIKE within Minutes!

Took THREE samples HOME.

INSTALLATION has been BLOWN into THE WALLS………..

THEN COMES SHEETROCK, TAPING,and Texture.

RODS GO UP!

AND PAINTING!

I was asked color for closet and because I was so HOT and wanted everything to move along I said WHITE!I figure my clothes are MY COLOR!I really wanted to do a PALE PINK but never verbalized it as that would have required more time and paint samples!I have found as I get older the JUST GET IT DONE WAY is THE BEST WAY for me!

Never mind I will have those WALLS COVERED!

HERE are the NEW FLOORS!

He nailed them in place.

Then last SATURDAY I was HIRED to PAINT the trim!

That was AFTER I spent four or FIVE hours CLEANING A CHANDELIER!

CRYSTAL BY CRYSTAL……..rubbing with an ear swab the metal trim as well as finding replacement crystals for some areas.I Know it will NEVER be done AGAIN!

Our NEIGHBORS came for a VIEWING!

SO, I showed how the CAFTANS would LOOK………..

WHY SO HIGH you ASK?

ANSWER is below THE CAFTANS will be two shelves for shoes.

NOT DONE YET!

I HAD TO STOP FOR THE DAY BUT THIS GIVES YOU AN IDEA.

ABOVE the rods will be another shelf for sweaters……..and MY basket BAGS!

I had ordered HOT PINK HANGERS!

They arrived SUNDAY NIGHT after two days of moving in at 5 pm!

I was DOWN for a NAP!

Kimono’s and CAFTANS share the back wall……..

THAT is not a PART in my hair it is a STRIP OF GREY!!!!!!!!!

I HAD TO ZOOM IN as it looks like I shaved my HAIR!

NO MAKE UP.

HAIR PULLED OUT OF MY FACE.

GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS!

AS you can see the ROD has become a BIT FULLER!

The HOT PINK HANGERS got HUNG.

I agree BLACK would have looked better but sometimes

YOU JUST HAVE TO GO WILD!

THIS is the rod on the left side of the closet a bit TIGHT!

……………..HANGERS still on MY TO DO!

I am about half way through them………do you think 200 hangers will do it?

Let me RESPOND……..NO!!

I do NOT know what I was thinking!!!

SO every item has been edited……….still to come are SWEATERS, EXERCISE GEAR and T-shirts.

They will have to fit onto the shelving!

Now there is CHAT about a VERY NARROW ISLAND…………

As we need space for Underwear and SOCKS, scarves etc!

I have a BIG ROUND TUFFET that would LOOK GREAT tucked back there by the CAFTANS & KIMONOS.That would give us a place to SIT and Toss Things UPON!

I also have my GRANDMOTHERS CHAISE LOUNGE…………..

Give me your THOUGHTS DEAR READERS in the COMMENT SECTION:

LET’s PRACTICE OUR VOTING SKILLS!

SEVENTY~ FIVE MORE DAYS!

A.ISLAND

B.ROUND TUFFET………GORGEOUS PIECE!

C.GRANDMOTHER’S  CHAISE

I would like to mention here that another

VERY WELL LOVED BLOGGER and WARDROBE CONSULTANT has passed.

Brenda Kinsel

I was DEVASTATED by the NEWS and so did NOT want to BELIEVE it was TRUE!

I held out HOPE and even rang her phone hoping SHE WOULD PICK UP!

IT RANG AND WENT TO VOICEMAIL so I STILL HAD HOPE!

THEN THE EMAIL CAME……..

WE had met a few times and she always made a comment about wanting to see MY CLOSET!

(I was HORRIFIED as IT would NOT have been up to SNUFF for this ORGANIZED LADY!)

I think I said PLEASE COME once and SMILED BIG OTHER TIMES!

She lived in SONOMA which is a quaint darling town only an hour away from me!

We were always going to do lunch, which never happened as she was a WORKING GAL and as you know I was not up for driving long distances these last 4 years!

The last time I saw HER we were at SANDRA SALLINS in Los Angeles having dinner……….

WE had a lovely time and SANDRA I know your MEMORY is BETTER than MINE but I can remember HER showing us HOW TO WALK?What was that ABOUT…….I recall lots of giggles and FUN CHIT CHAT!She was becoming a GRANDMAMA TOO…………lucky me as I got to drive her back to the GUEST HOUSE she was staying at in Beverly Hills.SO KIND, SO GRACIOUS, SO YOUNG AT HEART!

Brenda has about 5 published books on how to DRESS.

If you need HELP in that department head to your nearest Book SHOP!

BRENDA, I HOPE YOU CAN WATCH ME FINISH THIS CLOSET AND SMILE BACK AT ME WITH YOUR APPROVAL!

I WILL THINK OF YOU OFTEN.

AS I STEP INTO MY BALLROOM CLOSET AS I NOW CALL IT!

IT will BE READY FOR YOUR APPROVAL SOON!

KEEP SCROLLING TO VOTE AS I REALLY AM IN A DILEMMA~

APPRECIATE YOU!

Dear Friends,

It’s with the heaviest heart that we are writing this to you. This past Sunday we said goodbye to our beautiful, courageous, creative, ambitious, and, of course, stylish mother, Brenda. Her last moments were surrounded with the deepest love from her partner Russ, her three children Trevor, Erin and Caitlin, and her brothers Brent and Kirk. She passed peacefully and with grace.

Her passing was unexpected, the result of a new medication that had a devastating side effect. We are in total disbelief, as I’m sure all of you are also. Suddenly dealing with the grief of losing our mother has been a tremendous shock.

As you know, Brenda loved writing about fashion, making it relatable and “doable” for her followers, fans, and friends. Her blogs and posts were fun and inspirational. Her writing could make you chuckle in one paragraph and tear up in the next. She put her heart into each and every sentence and held nothing back. And that smile!!!

We are so proud to have had her as our mom. She taught us strength, to love, to be kind, to appreciate music, and to always get dressed. She is one of a kind and irreplaceable, as I’m sure you would agree.

Mommy Foxy, you have spread your love and vibrance to so many communities and touched so many hearts. All of those that you have reached are now reflecting their love back to you.

Thank you so much for being a part of our mother’s beautiful life.

With love,
Her daughters,
Caitlin & Erin Kinsel

    Ciao Bella,

I think the pink hangars are perfect, so you get your touch of pink. I was gratified to read further up in the comments that the Action Man pouring the concrete was the Italian – I felt sure it had to be!! The tuffet gets my vote – how could you resist having such a thing, and as it’s bound to be smaller, the opportunity for Resting Garments to build up is minimised. What a delightful addition to your home, all round. The demise of the hot tub gets the thumbs up, too. The most peculiar and unhygienic domestic appliance I’ve ever heard of … And thinking about the electricity, how are you faring with the blackouts we read about?

I’m sorry to hear about your friend. How fortunate she was to have her family with her at the end.

SO sad about Brenda; it should not have happened. Allopathic medicine is really scary to me.

As far as the closet, WOW! I didn’t read all the numerous comments, but what came to my mind is a tuft that opens up providing storage!

By the way, it hasn’t hit 100 here!

By the way……..I am going to measure my closet which is huge I know…..when we built our house, I knew there would be grandchildren, so allocated that space for them as well….the island moves out of the way….we actually had 7 little ones sleeping there at once! One in the window seat….the rest on blow up mattresses on the floor. Wheels on the island (invisible under) is a great idea….don’t make it stationary if you might want it to move!

Your hot pink hangers are beyond divine….where did you get them…..replacing all of mine tomorrow….my hangers are now kind of falling apart. When I get through this weekend…I will have a lot to give away….boring black……good hangers; some are just fine….just let me know..I will send!

Oh it is so stunning! I measured my closet……which you have seen and has an island…..(on invisible wheels….and I realized that makes sense……I have a window and a window seat with drawers under…..but there is no room in yours for the “tuffet” I sent you pictures of….

Divine new closet. You have inspired me.

I am going to go through every single item of clothes this weekend…..(starting tomorrow) and purge and send to others who will enjoy! Selfish and horrible to have things hanging in my closet I do not wear and would bring either joy or use for others!
You have inspired me yet again!

ps. What kind of side effect of a medication kills you? Please; let us know….was this a cancer treatment? what? scariest thing ever!

I didn’t read every comment but I am voting for an island. I do think you need a place to sit for shoe trying on, etc. My closet has a tiny stool that can be picked up with one hand and moved around and out of the way. I will post a pick on the FB link. I will not say I’m jealous, but I hope my new office space looks half as inviting as your closet!

I will start by saying how sorry I am for your loss of a dear friend, LA CONTESSA. That is a tragic story that it was due to medication.

Now, your closet. Oh, my!! It is perfection. Love the chandelier and had to laugh when you said it will never be cleaned again. Haha. No doubt. What a lot of work you’ve put into the space. You and the Italian have done a tremendous job. I vote for (B) to go in the center of the closet. I feel like the Chaise will be better in your bedroom just outside the closet. 🙂 Have a great weekend, Elizabeth!

I have big appreciation for beautiful closets … and yours is an inspiration! I think I need to do some finishing in a couple of rooms now! Thank you so much for sharing your fabulous new space darling!!

Stay safe with all of those crazy fires. Do you know here in Southern California … they don’t even mention them on the news!! I can only find any information online!

Wow what a project! So well done! Still can’t get over the amount of clothes you have. Always nice to see the pics of what you are wearing. After reading the blog I had to go and measure my closet. Our house was built in the early 1930s. The closet which is in the bedroom has a small square leaded glass window. It is 3 feet wide – 8 feet high – and 3 feet 4inches long = SMALL. I counted the clothes on the hangers – 54 items. As you can see I am not a fan of clothes. Lingerie/socks are in a dresser drawer.

Now if I had lots and lots of clothes I could store them in a large room upstairs or use 2 other small closets. My husband who has way more clothes than me stores his in a cedar wardrobe – dresser drawers – a closet and in the basement.

I like the idea of an island as you need more storage. I would have it on wheels – (locking ones) – and then it could be moved about. Perhaps if it was high enough you could have a fold down ironing board (I had one years ago on the kitchen wall) attached to one side or a fold down chair. Saw a great fold down chair on a Norwegian tv show recently – it was in a hallway – attached to a wall. I thought how clever.

Looking forward to seeing the end result of the closet.

So sad to read that medication attributed to Brenda’s death.

It’s wonderful and I think it should just be called The Ballroom.
I opt for a tuffet, one needs to sit and think about choices.
I read about your friend and she was an astonishing woman. I’m sorry for her loss to her family and the style community. It reminds me that nothing is for sure and we must get on with all of it while we can.

Magnificent! I vote for the tuffet or the chaise … although you didn’t show us pictures. As you say, you need something to sit on and toss discards when making morning wardrobe selections. This is essential. I speak from experience. Too late in life I learned the ‘complete outfit’ before purchase plan … game changer. I was so sad to hear of Brenda’s passing. In fact, I did not really believe it until I received the email. Such a lovely and brilliant woman gone too soon. She is loving and approving of your new wardrobe room from another plane. xo

Green (or pink) with ENVY : ) Our closet is so odd, like two triangles oddly put together, very impractical!! (And I vote for lime hangars!) The Dressing Room is perfection… dreamy. Perfect for a Contessa. I love the tuffet as a centerpiece, visually, with chandelier overhead. But understand about practical, and if there must be a choice, it usually wins. Hmmm : )

I was so moved by what you wrote about your friend and fellow blogger… it is a reminder to seize the day, everyday, as tomorrow is a promise that may not be kept. xoxo

Looks wonderful! I vote for the island. We have a large master closet and were able to put an old, low dreser in the center. It is perfect piece for storage and also a place to lay things out – particularly for vacation packing, whenever we get to do that again. Perhaps the tuffet could be replaced with a kind of pouff, a bit smaller but still a place to sit. Have fun finishing the organizing and enjoying the results!

So fun to watch the transformation and I think I did spy the Italian ?? He is the amazing guy who makes magic happen and you make it sparkle ??. Bravo ??

Thank you for talking about Brenda. I follow several, many in fact, bloggers etc BUT YOU ARE THE ONLY ONE I HAVE SEEN TO ACKNOWLEDGE HER PASSING?? I’m puzzled? Some of the many knew her (having seen her in pictures with them). Does this omission speak to…. what.?? unfortunately Sad commission.
Of course I did not know Brenda, but did follow her ,and the obvious that always came thru is a kind and very caring person…And what a wonderful sense of humor and infectious and beautiful smile.
Your acknowledgement speaks volumes about the beautiful, heartfelt person you are. Blessings

No one could tell me what day she had died!Thats when I realized I had her phone number in my phone so called it!A GAL in AUSTRALIA wrote about it on her BLOG as did SUSAN UN FEMME.I donot follow many of the FASHION bloggers.I know at FIRST I felt I did not know her well enough to write about her………and was SO DEVASTATED I couldn’t!As I put the closet post together she kept popping in my mind and I thought OKAY this makes sense now……………SHE WAS ADMIRED AND LOVED MY MANY!She had a following of over 19,000 on instagram.I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING LUNCH WITH HER IN SONOMA!THANK YOU, XX

What a welcome addition! With regards the island v. the chaise or tuffet, can you audition these before making a decision?? I cannot work my head around measurements on paper, and find it helpful to at the very least lay out sheets of newspaper that match the measurements of whatever furniture I’m considering. Also, so sorry to read about your friend. What a loss to the blogging community.

Really there is NO ROOM for any of the above! We will have to see what the ITALIAN comes up with…………the room is 10 feet wide.Take away 2 feet on either side where the clothes stick out that brings it down too 6 feet.I guess a 4 foot ISLAND will work. With drawers and I can put picture frames, perfumes etc on top.
I will try and roll the TUFFET IN THERE just for SHOW AND TELL………
AS for the chaise I don’t think we could even get it through the doorway!!!!!!!

Your walk in closet is fabulous, thanks to the charming, clever Italian.
The pink hangers and chandelier are so you.
I like the idea of a tuffet, but the island sounds more practical if you need one.

I LOVE the little window and the chandelier- the two together- modern and classic are so California!! I can’t wait to see this in person one day.. Goals.

Hope you are taking care and not doing much outside with this air quality. I am happy to be back, but landed to ashes all over and grey skies. It’s not even fire season yet!!

Need at least a FOOT if not a little MORE TO walk around……..both sides which leaves 48 inches for the island.Which seems BIG NOW……….I think I did something wrong!

Love it all. What a fabulous space for a fabulous collection of clothes. Nobody paints walls in a caftan! Only you. I’m devastated by the loss of Brenda. I adored her. What talent. I think she was the best at writing about clothes and her life. I was always touched by her writing. She was such a warm, talented and giving person. Not a lot around like her. I don’t remember the walk but I have a photo where Bob had made her a drink. Do you remember what the drink was? I think I was on pain killers at the time. It was after a big surgery. I think the closet is just great! You have a lot of caftans! It is so interesting reading your blog. Just so interesting—my wardrobe is completely opposite from yours! I would not be caught dead in a caftan and wear shorts all the time! I still have nice legs at my age (not telling but older than you are!) and can get away with shorts. I live in Florida where the heat and humidity are tremendous so shorts are a must! I do wear a lot of linen tops which are cooler in the summer. I honestly don’t mind ironing them! Have a great day!

One word ~ GLORIOUS! Love this closet and all your clothes really make it a magical place. I think your mother’s chaise would be great in there with a small side table for wine or tea/coffee. You would need some sort of libations to calm nerves while TRYING to decide what to wear everyday!! But a wonderful dilemma to have.

So sorry to hear about Brenda, I always loved her smile which was the loveliest part of all her outfits.

SEE THATS THE PROBLEM……THE JEWELS COULD NEVER FIT ALONG WITH LINGERIE ETC…….JEWELRY willNOT be sharing CLOSET SPACE!
THE ISLAND HAS TO BE VERY NARROW!!!
AS we need room to walk around………it all gets pretty TIGHT quickly!
      FOOD for thought!
      LOVED HEARING from YOU!

Hello Contessa, That was terrible news about Brenda Kinsel. I just took a look at her website, and was impressed with her underlying philosophy and organization.

You must be thrilled with your new closet, but considering your needs and future acquisitions, perhaps you should have just enclosed the entire yard. My one question is that window–will bright sun come in and ruin your clothes? Perhaps you have already done this, but there are UV-blocking films that can be applied so that nothing will fade.

I don’t have that many clothes, but I had a walk-in closet once, and it was a real luxury. My last house had a walk-in cedar closet in the attic, but it was mostly used for blankets and out-of-season storage.

How marvelous to get additional closet space. Looks good. I like the idea of an island plus a place to sit–enjoy.

Is there a way to have the island AND either the tuffet or the chaise? Yes, I want it all. Your closet is fabulous and I enjoyed seeing the photos. Could you possibly incorporate a chest to hold the items you would have stored in the island? Does the former closet in front of the new closet hold any possibilities for extras? And you are the most elegant and glamorous painter I have ever beheld. Thank you for sharing your fabulous space with us, Contessa! And thank you for this sweet memorial to Brenda. May God forever bless her soul.
