(This info came from INSTAGRAM!)
MY DAILY DOSE OF NEWS AND WINDOW SHOPPING!
thank you so much elizabeth for asking me to take part in your style series. i’m so flattered and honored to be among the beautiful women who have come before me.
1.HOW WOULD YOU DESCRIBE YOUR STYLE? unfussy. i cannot bear to fuss with my clothes or accessories during the day. i lead a very ordinary life and my clothes reflect that.
2.What INSPIRES YOUR SIGNATURE STYLE? that’s such a great question and hard to answer. what style i have has just always been my style. i’ve veered here and there over the decades but my basics work perfectly for me.
3. WHAT ACCESSORY CAN YOU NOT DO WITHOUT? sunglasses. i have 4 pair that are always on rotation.
4. FAVORITE COLOR? i have 4, white, black, blue and camel.
5. DO YOU HAVE A SIGNATURE PIECE? i’d say old jeans and a little black dress is always chic.
6. WHAT ARE YOUR STYLE STRENGTHS? i think my style strength would be that i know my limits.my look is pared down, 2nd hand and yet i hope it has an effortless look to it.
7. DO YOU HAVE A STYLE ICON? i have always loved jane birkin. she is the perfect mix of nonchalance and elegance.
8. BEAUTY ESSENTIALS?
My daily beauty routine first starts with my diet. i believe that lots of fresh fruit, veggies and water is the way to beauty. at night i use my clairsonic…
I’m an esthetician so you would think I use a ton of products but my daily routine centers around 4. at night i use my clairsonic bc it’s like getting a facial every day. in the morning i mist my face with water and use a little moisturizer or sunblock then apply my foundation if i’m wearing it that day, a little blush mascara and always red lipstick. the product line i use is Osmosis. it’s amazing!
9. DO YOU HAVE REPEAT OFFENDERS IN YOUR CLOSET? my wardrobe is quite small but I definitely have repeats…menswear, little black dresses and vintage coats.
10.DO YOU HAVE ANY STYLE RULES THAT YOU LIVE BY? for me things have to be simple. i lead a pretty uncomplicated life and my wardrobe reflects that.
11.WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE ONLINE GO TO SOURCES? the main source of my shopping is the goodwill or any 2nd hand shop. i always start there but when i’m looking for inspiration or something new i’ll first look at emerson fry. she is so good at effortless style. everlane makes beautiful affordable basics and ebay is fabulous.
12.DO YOU HAVE A PARTICULAR DESIGNER YOU ARE DRAWN TO? ralph lauren has and will probably always be my man. he just always gets it right.
13.WHAT ADVISE DO YOU HAVE FOR WOMEN OVER 50,or over 40? when it comes to skincare i say start early and don’t forget about your neck. i’m not a big fan of plastic surgery but to each her own. as far as fashion goes, wear whatever makes you feel like smiling because that is really your best accessory!
thanks again elizabeth for inviting me into your lovely blog and style series!
THANK YOU JANET for YOUR PHOTOS and WORDS of WISDOM.
CAN YOU BELIEVE HER CLOSET UP TOP?!!!
THAT IS HER CLOSET.
COULD YOU DO THAT?
GO THAT SMALL!
I ADMIRE HER SO MUCH!
DEAR READERS,
if you want a REAL TREAT click on the LINK BELOW to see JANETS HOUSE which was THE GARDENERS COTTAGE of an OLD ESTATE in the REDLANDS,in Southern California!SHE SAW THE HOUSE 25 YEARS AGO and ADMIRED IT from the driveway than it became HERS 25 years LATER!
Her style and home are exactly what I aspire to! She exudes an austere kind of chic. Nothing overly fussy, everything in balance, and yet, there’s a richness to everything. Also, I love her hair! Printing off a pic to take to my stylist. “Give me the ‘Janet,'” I’ll say.
Thank you Elizabeth for sharing her with your readers. I’m going to share her cottage in the newsletter this week. xoxo
What a fabulous lady! I will definitely follow her. If I could, I would wear sunglasses 24 hrs a day. I love this series and always meet someone knew. You have the chicest friends. Have a wonderful week, dear friend.
Amazing! I am in Awe of that minimalist closet that she keeps! There is surely something to be said for keeping only what you use! I love this!
Sending out all the best wishes for a Blessed Easter Sunday today to you and your Beautiful Family!
XOXO
BACI,
Zingara
This was a lovely and beautiful article and Janet’s style is perfection for her! It truly seems to be the embodiment of who she is as a person!!! I adore this series that y’all do for us!!! It is so delightful! I cannot wait to drop in at her blog next!!! Thank you, Dearie!!! Have a blessed Easter!!!
I’m stunned by such a simple, effortless, pared-down look. I can’t do that very well but I always admire people who do chic so well. What a beautiful woman! I love discovering new people to read about! xx
I am in awe of such a simple closet. Mine, well I have wardrobes, are overflowing and my clothes come in all the colours of the rainbow, and then some. I have a colleague at work who does the minimalist colour thing but I just could not do that. I enjoyed this feature, as always.
Such a great post. I admire Janet for being able to minimize. We renovated a little house for my mother (900 ft) and she adored it for 30 years. Not sure I could do it !! Shall send good thoughts out to Janet and follow her blog now. Happy Easter Elizabeth. Xo
JANET would LOVE Those paintings you are doing in blue and white on the old TEXT!
I think YOU should think about selling your doodles and or make cards that would be for sale!
I KNOW I WOULD BUY A STACK!
900 is small.
Ours was 1200 when we bought it!
The ITALIAN ADDED ON AND NOW it’s 2,000 something……..NO linen closet,No coat closet,Closet I share…………NOT ALLOWED ON HIS SIDE!He says “I’m a GAS!”……..give a little TAKE A LOT!SO, I am NOT ALLOWED ON HIS SIDE where he has SPACE JUST SITTING THERE!!!!!!!!!!NAKED SPACE!!!!KILLS ME!

It was such a pleasure to discover Janet and learn about her style. I sauntered on and learned about her house. I loved the fact that she edited down to fit the size of her house so well. I wish I could all my clothes in her closet and still look fabulous! Thank you Elisabeth for introducing us to her. Happy Easter!
Thanks for posting this interview, it was a pleasure to learn about Janet and her blog.
Love her uncomplicated style, relaxed, polished and sophisticated. It seems to allow her true self to shine through, without the distraction of unnecessary accoutrements.
I definitely agree that Ralph Lauren, “just always gets it right”.
I’m another fan of Janet’s effortless style. She dresses in the vein of Birkin (of course), Hepburn and even a dash of Diane Keaton. I adore that she recognizes a woman’s best accessory in the end is her smile. Amen to that!
She’s my kind of lady. Happy Easter Elizabeth to all the family!!
What a refreshing post, I really relate to Janet’s style, especially her simplified beauty regimen and clothes closet. Her style is understated and classic and I love that she shops the thrift stores for her clothing and home décor. Her home is utterly charming. I will head over to her blog and find out what’s been happening in her life now. Thank you again Elizabeth for introducing a new friend to me.
hugs,
Leslie
OH, LESLIE……………how wonderful I have put YOU TWO together!YOU actually are NOT THAT FAR APART in Southern California!I think YOU BOTH WOULD HIT IT OFF TREMENDOUSLY!!!!FOLLOW JANET………..maybe you can be of HELP TOO!

What a beautiful post. I enjoyed reading the comments as much as the story. And I like it that Elizabeth responds to the comments! I am visiting from Janet’s blog and like this one just as much – another one to which I can subscribe! LOVE the Paris photos as well. Thanks for bringing all of this to us, Elizabeth. And Janet, keep the faith. We never know what the future holds and hope can be a driving and powerful force. My heart is with you on this journey. May God hold you in the palm of His hand. Give Larry a kiss on the cheek and tell him it’s from me.
Thrilled YOU POPPED OVER from THE GARDENER’s COTTAGE TO PEEK at the INTERVIEW!
I see YOU did MORE than peek YOU CRUISED!!!!!!Those PARIS photos were taken FIVE YEARS AGO come OCTOBER!!!!!IT was a TRIP I will NEVER FORGET!
If I am lucky enough to get GRANDCHILDREN I will DO the SAME with THEM!!!SUCH FUN MEMORIES!
THANK YOU……….XX
Oh I just adore Janet’s style! So elegant, simple and chic! she totally has a Jane Birkin vibe going on! I love that she is a thrift shopper like myself and her closet is my ultimate wardrobe goal. Janet is proof that you can be both elegant and cool in a very uncomplicated style. Sending love and good thoughts to Janet and her husband.
Saw pics of Martha Stewart’s new closet this morning. Love it but not for me. Knew immediately I don’t want a life needing that many clothes. Zero judgement of Martha, glad she’s Martha, have many good epiphanies thru the years with Martha’s books, tv, magazine, and my sister says Martha’s now hitting it out of the park on QVC.
Janet’s closet? I want that life for sure. Simple. Pared down. Second hand. Yes, Janet’s closet is the hunt.
Moving 3 years ago into our ca. 1900 home, made the decision to modify zero closets or add closets. Instead, modify my life to the architectural template we moved into.
OH I am swooning over her little cottage home…and her style. MY heart goes out to her. We just never know when life will change drastically for us. Reading something like this makes me want to kick myself for getting depressed over such insignificant things.
Thank you Elizabeth….beautiful post.
I absolutely love her uncomplicated style and her contentment with it is reflected in all the photos, she looks stylish and elegant in every single one.Thank you so much for this interview today, can’t wait to read her blog and get to know her better. Have a very Happy Easter. xx
She is marvelous. I’ll be 60 in April and I think I’m carrying it well, and seeing this lovely lady (who is probably younger than me) look so fabulous in her jeans (my favorite) and long hair is giving me inspiration to look my best no matter what age.
I think SHE OUT RANKS YOU!!!!!!But I am PULLING that out of my HEAD from a PAST BIRTHDAY Announcement!
ALWAYS CARE ABOUT YOUR LOOKS………that will MAKE YOU HAPPY and the PEOPLE that LAY their eyes on YOU!Somehow, I do not think we have to worry about YOU!

Love this post Elizabeth.
Janet is one of my favorite bloggers. You, also.
She embodies simple chic, and is so authentic. I have followed her as long as she has been blogging. She is such a nice person, and you are the same.
I am praying for her and Larry.
XXo R
I’ve followed Janet’s blog from the start. She is such a breath of fresh air and i look forward to each post. Her simple home, food and wardrobe are so inspirational!
I pray for Janet and Larry as they face the challenge ahead of them.
HAPPY to HEAR this BETTY!
SHE shared basket bags with us a few months ago and BOY did I get in trouble on the INTERNET because of THAT LINK!!!!!!!!!!!
Nothing like a good RECOMMENDATION from a BLOGGER YOU ADORE!
XX
My house also had its start as a small building on a ranch (though it was more in the shack genre than cottage). I love what she has done with her cottage, and I love her style.
I do not know if JANET will come and answer questions here………But if NOT I will try and find out for YOU!
CLAIRSONIC is a BRAND so any of those will do I believe! There are Knock offs I have seen in SEPHORA………..XX
from the first time I’ve followed her blog years ago I’ve called Janet AJJ. she has to me the same artless impeccably simple and elegant (never “trying to hard!”) style of two other famous icons.
Audrey Hepburn (does she not remind you of Audrey?) and Jackie. and we all know which Jackie I mean! and her own name Janet. AJJ… a monogram that I always think of when seeing her.
I love how she ends her blog … (and it’s because of her I’ve become a Vegan)
her last line is “kindness is never out of style.” I love that! and it’s her. it sums up her life.
am sending love to her and Larry both! they have so much living and loving yet to do! XO
and CONTESSA… you and your life are all about JOY! over the top delightful JOY!
thank you for this wonderful series and your own blog! XO
OH JOY!!!!!!!
I have a VERY HAPPY READER HERE!
I agree with you 100%.AUDREY & JACKIE………PURE ELEGANCE!
DO you recall how AUDREY had a pet deer for a film she was doing and those photos in the grocery store with the deer in her cart!?!
I ADORE THOSE PHOTOS……………she connected with animals as well as people.
SHE LOVED TO GARDEN TOO!SHE HAD MANY ROSES in SWITZERLAND………..just like OUR JANET!WE need to solve HER ROSE dilemma!I HOPE A FEW ARE BUDDING RIGHT NOW to give HER some JOY!!!!!!!

Thank you for introducing us to Janet. When I looked at her picture ate the top, I thought….Jane Birkin…just with a little “t” at the end. Their styles and look are very similar. I will definitely check out her blog site…although I read she has been facing some challenges that seem to have turned her world inside out. I will find out about it…but will be sending good thoughts and prayers even before my fingers take flight to the Gardener’s Cottage. Sweet and simple…also strong. Another wonderful woman and lovely interview. As always….well done!
I think I am the ONLY person in THE BLOG world who did not know who JANE BIRKIN was until RECENTLY!When was SHE FAMOUS…….the 1970’s or the 80’s?How could a GIRL like me have missed out on HER!I DEVOURED those FASHION MAGAZINES……..as a kid.
For me it was not SO much the clothes as how they SHOT the PHOTOS…….background, lighting,PROPS!
HAPPY to introduce YOU LISA TO JANET!
I LOVE making CONNECTIONS!!!!!!

I’ve always adored Janet from afar. She seemed so perfect I never felt I could add to her exquisite look. I always feel like a mess when I visit her website. So beautiful and serene.I love the way she looks, dresses and cooks. I could use some of that simplicity in my life. Could any of us have a closet like that? Not me. Would love to but I know me. Never happening.
My heart goes out to Janet and Larry. Very trying times. Sending love and admiration.
HOW DID IT GO YESTERDAY with the CLOSET HELPER?
How many trash bags are going to GOODWILL?
SO, Happy to hear you are on the mend!
YOU and I are FAR from this CLOSET………..which is OKAY!
But something WE BOTH can ADMIRE!!!!!!!!!
I ONLY HAVE ONE PAIR OF SUNGLASSES……..how many do YOU HAVE?
Headed for an EYE EXAM TODAY!
Think WE all will be thinking about LARRY and JANET………..
POSITIVE THOUGHTS!
XO
There is such a beautiful serenity and calmness to Janet. Even her all lower-case typing has a lovely simplicity to it. I have been loving her gorgeous life through her blog for about a year, and I am so happy to learn just a little bit more about her stunning style through this delightful interview, Contessa.
Keeping you and yours my prayers, Janet..
xx
Stephanie aka tendrheart4
Another fabulous post Contessa…
I’ve been reading Janet’s blog since she started writing in 2009 and I am a HUGE fan. Love her home, the carefully curated decor and her own personal style…she is a lovely woman too.
I love Janet’s style and her blog. She always inspires me to live with less and reminds one that you don’t need to own a lot to be chic. She always has good food ideas too. Again loving this series Elizabeth! xo
This style interview was the best! Love Janet and your interview questions were so perfect. Janet’s style is so inspiring and her closet is gorgeous. Thank you Dear Contessa and thank you to our beautiful Janet XOXOXO
They are the SAME QUESTIONS EVERY MONTH!
CINDY came up with them……..
I told CINDY if we run OUT of PEOPLE to INTERVIEW we can CHANGE the QUESTIONS and Hit up the same people AGAIN!
I know JANET appreciates your comment……THANK YOU!

I identify with having a small closet. For ten years I lived on a ranch in what we called “The Little House” that was only 22 feet by 22 feet. My closet was three feet wide and I put two clothing rods, one up higher than the other. Like Janet, it forced me to wear only the essentials. I’m a woman of faith, and I’m sending my prayers for Janet and Larry. xoxox, Brenda
22 by 22……………I AM 6 feet………so add TWO MORE OF ME AND WE ARE OVER!
NOW, will you PLEASE DO A POST on THAT HOUSE!
What did you keep UNDER the BED?
THANK YOU for YOUR GOOD WISHES……….XO
Another great post about real women with real style. I have been a fan of Janet for sometime and I am in awe of her recent closet renovation and editing. I do not think I could edit myself to just a few items but it is a goal.
My prayers are with Janet and Larry as they tackle the uncertain times ahead.
I KNOW THERE IS NO WAY I COULD DO WHAT SHE HAS DONE EITHER ELIZABETH!
YES, WE ALL ARE THINKING ABOUT THESE TWO!
SOMEHOW, it will be OKAY…….I JUST FEEL IT!

I love and adore Janet, we live so close to each other and I missed a meet up with her, but I am sure someday we will meet.
Her effortless style is so well put together and an inspiration to having a shopping guide to all her thrifting advice. I think this is why I adore her so much. I can relate to her style as I see totally myself and my over 50 style in her. Mensware in white dress shirts have always been a favorite in my closet, and I never turn away a pull over lens sweater at a clearance rack.
As for her closet? Well, yes I’ve done just that to mine. Organized with only what I know to be fitting and beautiful. Limiting it to years of inventory… timeless pieces that intermix and expand a wardrobe, freeing up space for important pieces. There truly is an art to living with a small closet wardrobe… abundance doesn’t mean fashionless, and proof of that is so evident in Janet’s head to toe style. What a beautiful post this was, and inspiration to living beautifully simple and stylish at its forefront.

YOU Missed a MEET UP WITH ME AS WELL!!!!!!!!
LIFE DOES GET IN THE WAY SOMETIMES OF OUR FUN!!!!!!
YOU Should make the EFFORT TO TRY AGAIN……….a lunch a coffee just to get her out of the HOUSE A DISTRACTION of SORTS for HER.
HUGS to YOU,
AND I’m loving the ROSE PAINTINGS!!!!!!!!

Beauty in her case is simplicity and impeccably made selections. I marvel at people who know how to simplify and edit their closets. She is a doll in a doll house.
I am so inspired by her that I want to dump my closet and edit down to ” a few of my favorite things.” But then, they are all of my favorite things!
Thank you, Elizabeth, for inspiring us once again. You always pick winners. Where are these beauties? They must not hang out at CostCo. Come to think of it, some of my favorite things have come from there: A graphic T paired with a 3/4 black jacket and striped pants (in same color family) or black pants. It has to be fun for me. Thank you Janet and Elizabeth.
OH RAE!
YOU sent me that video which I have not had time to watch yet but I will……I noted it was 47 minutes.Maybe later today!
I say that TOO as you KNOW!WHERE ARE THESE WOMEN IN OUR NECK OF THE WOODS!SHE IS A GEM and LOVED VERY MUCH BY HER READERS!I have been FOLLOWING HER FOR YEARS AS WELL…………..XX
I love Janet’s style (but you probably could have guessed that!) she makes me believe that there’s hope for little ol’ style-stunted moi. And, I remember reading the Country Living story…love it all.
I am not familiar with lovely Janet and I will be sure to visit her blog. I love how comfortable she looks and feels, there is a calmness and peace about the way she presents herself. I so enjoyed this post. Thank you for introducing me to Janet!
I was thinking she reminded me of Jane Birkin, and then I got to the part where Jane Birkin is her style icon. Perfect fit!
That closet = GOALS.
Thanks for this introduction; I am off to read Janet’s blog.
YEP………GOALS I WILL NEVER ACHEIVE NOR would be ABLE TOO with MY collections of STUFF!
I DO ADMIRE HER!!!
I ADORE HER COTTAGE!
When we moved here from FLORENCE, ITALY I called my house THE COTTAGE!
STILL DO but does not COMPARE to HER ADORABLE ABODE!
XX
Somehow I found Janet when I found you, Ellie, Mimi T. and Heather… (what a home run). And although I have not commented on her posts until the most recent, I have always admired her simplicity and sophistication. She reminds me of Audrey Hepburn, my all-time most favorite fashion icon. The whiteness, the cleanness (it honestly seems like I can smell Ivory Soap : ), the brevity of her words and home décor and personal style are all so appealing. (The wardrobe-size closet is something I simply marvel at.) I think of her as a master EDITOR… and as a writer, I know that is a rare talent. Most of all, I find inspiration in the joyfulness, authenticity, and passions of women of a certain age who so willingly share their wisdom and real life experiences–both happy and heartbreaking–with their readers. It really feels like a privilege to be invited into the lives and homes of such amazing women. THANK YOU for all you do to brighten and enrich our lives, dear Contessa…XO
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE YOUR COMMENTS!!!!!!!!!!
YES! YES! YES! I SEE IT TOO!!!!
A MASTER EDITOR is the perfect description for her!Do you recall when she was culling out the wardrobe and would try things on OVER and OVER!They had to MAKE THE GRADE!!!!!!!
I LOVE SEEING and HEARING what these lovely LADIES SHARE WITH US!
IT is a GEM of a SERIES THANKS TO CINDY!!!!!
XO
Elizabeth, thank you for bringing us another Ageless Style contributor.
I enjoyed Janet’s bio; she is beautiful outside and inside. What’s better than favorite old jeans and little black dresses? I agree with her that knowing your own limitations is clutch, especially at our age. And I cannot live without my Clarisonic either.
I adored this interview. I love Janet and her effortless style. You know I tried to wrangle her but you snatched her up first. Janet is my kind of fashionista. She just simply has it. She has great instincts. Her interiors and her fashion sense mesh. She knows her style and does it so effortlessly. Hats off to Janet and my heart goes out to her during this difficult time. GREAT INTERVIEW!!
THANK YOU CINDY!
YES YOU AND HER GO HAND IN HAND.ELEGANCE AND MORE ELEGANCE……in black ,white and maybe come camel tossed in!I think you two are the SAME AGE AS WELL!
THANKS to YOU WE HAVE this AGELESS STYLE POST IDEA!!!!!!!!!
