THE VALLEY of the TEMPLES.

September 10, 2025 36 Comments

YES WE DID!

WE WERE STILL IN SICILY ZOOMING FROM SYRACUSE TO THE AGRIGENTO REGION.

ALSO KNOWN AS THE VALLE dei TEMPLI.

The VALLEY of the TEMPLES.

I had to go potty so we stopped at MC DONALDS and I used the facilities while the GORGEOUS ITALIAN ordered a coffee.Back in the day you never used the FACILITIES unless you made a purchase FIRST!

THEY HAVE A GOOD COFFEE MACHINE!

I loved that it was YELLOW!

This PARK was all made by the GREEKS in 400 BC.

It is still STANDING!

JUST LIKE ME, but I had a MOMENT of going DOWN!!

I hope you can understand the height and scope of these PYRAMIDS from my photos.

The day we were here it was 100 degrees if not MORE!I nearly passed out in the first photo you saw of me here.

We walked from TEMPLE to TEMPLE with little or NO SHADE.

I have noted from my ticket stub we had arrived at 2:00 in the afternoon, so NOT the BEST TIME to tour OUTSIDE.We did it however and found shade at a BAR tucked into the bushes halfway through………

I promptly ordered a WATER and GRANITA!!!

I LOVE THIS PHOTO of MY HUSBAND.

HE IS ALWAYS THE GENTLEMAN.

AS I HAVE MENTIONED IN ANOTHER POST HE ALWAYS HAD MY ARM OR HAND.

TODAY HE HAD MY HANDBAG as it was so HOT I could only concentrate on my steps.

I think MY BASKET BAG looked much better with his OUTFIT!

To think how many MEN and HANDS it took to build these Temples.

No cranes.

No electrical tools.

No Trucks.

WE FOUND SHADE!

I was COLLECTING OLIVE TREES this day in the Agrigento!

They were my best friends!

Protecting YOUR FAVORITE CONTESSA FROM THE ELEMENTS!

I forget what these holes were for but I think sleeping?

Can anyone tell me?

GOT WATER IN MY HANDS!

It is BLUE like my OUTFIT!

A COLOR I SELDOM WEAR.

The blue in the distance is THE Mediterranean Sea.

LOOK AT THE TRUNK OF THIS OLIVE TREE!

As you can see there were not many people there that day…………………

These columns holding those clouds up high in the sky!

Parts of the TEMPLE that didNOT make it to our CENTURY!

STILL BEAUTIFUL in its pile of antiquity.

If you head to SICILY one day be sure to go see this area.

“THIS IS SICILY’s star attraction, The Valley of the Temples it is an archaeological site in the Agrigento on the islands southern coast.Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1997 it is considered one of the finest examples of Greek architecture outside of GREECE.

I would LOVE TO KNOW why it took so long to become a UNESCO park!

The city of the AGRIGENTO.

I remember holding on thinking what is taking HIM so long to snap a photo!

I was REALLY HOT and thought I was going DOWN!

In his defense as you can see here HE TOOK A FEW PHOTOS!

AS I stated before OLIVE TREES were MY BEST FRIENDS; although this one did NOT give me shade.

I thought MY GOSH this is an old one that they have POTTED!

They must have brought it back to LIFE.

WE ARE OFF TO FIND SOME DINNER IN TOWN!

LEAVING our hotel in the ORANGE MOBILE!

He is having a CAMPARI.

I am having a NON-alcoholic beverage which was DELICIOUS!

Do I remember what it was……..NO!

THE DAYS CATCH at our restaurant ……….if I have-not mention before in another blog post we ate mostly FISH while in SICILY!

WE are headed back to the hotel after a wonderful meal.

Look what is ALL LIT UP AT NIGHT!

THE TEMPLES!

By now I am TELLING HIM TO SLOW DOWN and pull over!

STUNNING!!!

This photo was taken from our HOTEL ROOM when we got back from dinner!

What a TREAT!

SO, that is the end of the AGRIGENTO and the Valley of the Temples.

I still have MORE TO SHARE in upcoming POSTS, but first I’m going to go back in time a WEE LITTLE BIT!

Here I am with THE ITALIAN and our TWO SONS.

It must have been SPRINGTIME in the early 1990’s and we were in an outdoor enclosed patio that the boys called

NEVERLAND.

I think one of the AUNTS made their T-SHIRTS for EASTER.

I do recall LOVING those YELLOW SANDALS and I had them for YEARS!

More of SICILY to come ROME and BUDAPEST!!

I managed to clean out six drawers this week so far.Small drawers but neverless, it took all of FIVE minutes per drawer for the LINGERIE drawers and it was easy!Underwear that was too small and bras with underwire GONE!TUBE TOPS with sequins GONE!Gloves and cold weather mittens GONE.

Not because I do not like them anymore, but because I will NOT be wearing any of it ever AGAIN!

THAT WAS A BIG AHA MOMENT FOR ME and a little bit sad!

I use to rationalize why to KEEP just in case……………

Have you gone through that clean out phase knowing you will NEVER WEAR ITEMS AGAIN?

It’s another part of LIFE NO ONE REALLY TALKS ABOUT!

And what about those fancy HANDKERCHIEFS that belonged to your Mother and Grandmother?

Nope, I could not toss those.Did think I might start using one!The rest I TUCKED in the back of the DRAWER for someone else to find down the road aways………….

I am VERY SENTIMENTAL if you had not picked up on that by now!

BIG HUGS TO ALL OF YOU!

Those temples are astounding. I cannot believe I haven’t been to see them yet. But I definitely won’t go in summer. Some time in late winter or early spring will be perfect.

I am sentimental too. I keep all sorts of stuff I don’t use. Perhaps it’s time to clean by drawers too.

P.S. UNESCO didn’t start designating World Heritage Sites until 1978, so this place came along in a later batch of designations.

What gorgeous photos of the ruins! I, too, marvel at the engineering of ancient times, and how magnificent structures were erected without modern equipment. How sweet of Giampiero to hold your bag – being European, he looks completely natural doing so. The bronze outfit looks magnificent on you! You are quite the fashion plate. That is a sweet family photo; as another commenter said, “Where does the time go?” I am proud of you for cleaning out drawers. I need to do that in my whole house. I still have a pile of my parents’ things in the basement and I think I am now ready to go through it all. I’ve done well downsizing my closet, but still have many things I know I won’t ever wear again, but like you, I am sentimental.

I so enjoyed your wonderful photos of the Valley of the Temples as we still plan to visit next year probably in Spring . I can imagine how hot and uncomfortable it was sight seeing in that heat. As usual your travel outfits looked wonderful.
The photo of you both and your boys is so special.
Well done you you on starting to sort through things no longer needed . I too am at that stage but it is such a task .

Thanks so much for sharing the photos from the Valley of Temples. For some decades, I personally could not face clearing out a basement. Now I find it’s like a treasure hunt. I try not to keep many things. I am writing a brief history of my father based on all the papers I am finding. Most of the papers end up in the recycling bin, but not before I make any notes for the history. It is fine to say that our memories will last, but unless we actually write our memories down, nobody will really know them. I have written a draft children’s book based on my memories as a child as far as what nature, birds, and other things I saw. It may or may not be printed due to cost, but at least I know that a few copies will end up with family. I too was surprised to find my mother’s glove box with elbow length, white gloves, and black gloves. I remember so well as a child seeing my mother dressed up to go out for dinner. I found a treasure trove of costume jewellery as well. There comes a time when one can face cleaning up without sadness. You should really make a memory book or album for your lovely granddaughter and wow, was the Italian ever hot when he was young. We’ve all known about your beauty now and in the past, but it was hard to visualize the Italian until I saw the photo. The rest, of course, is history!

I think one could go view those temple ruins a hundred times and never lose awe of beauty and history. I can only imagine what it’s like to see and feel in person.
The olive tree trunks have kept steady guard. Olive trees always remind there is beauty in the old that comes only with passage of time.
Beautiful trip, beautiful pictures. Your outfit (bronze color) standing by the potted Olive tree was perfection from head to toe. The sandals and skirt flair absolutely said Greece goes to Italy. Like the ruins.
Yes I have had the moment when I realized that I’ll never wear or cross that bridge again moment. It is an awaking isn’t it. Once embraced it becomes an opportunity to revisit our memories and realize the blessed life we have hopefully lived. I see that with you with each dear item you share with us that holds such deep memories for you. A blessed life indeed.
Thanks for taking us along on your journeys. And yes I want to go to Mcd’s and see that yellow coffee machine. Wish all your readers could have a cup there with you.
    Hugs and kisses Dee

You and I HOLD A SPECIAL BOND THAT IS FOR SURE!We share a LOT IN COMMON!That “AWAKENING” as you call it which is a better word is SOMETHING!!!So many feelings FLY THROUGH!
I can let go of that!
Those were my FAVORITE BRAS of 65 years, but I can NO LONGER WEAR THEM!Hurt my ribcage area TOO MUCH.
Not to mention the dollars I’m tossing!
Tube top I haven’t worn in 30 years but but maybe under a sheer BLOUSE?
      Who am I kidding!!!
I am so thankful we got to live in the 80s and 90s as we got to dress up and go out into the discos into the bars into the theater into the Opera House. Those were the days when people dressed and it was appreciated.
They were FLEETING THOUGHTS as I was in a hurry to get through the drawers and SIT DOWN!
You ALWAYS GET WHAT IM TRYING TO SAY!

You have inspired me to write more detailed accounts of our trips. I really enjoy reading yours. And yes the clearing out phase is upon us too. So much stuff. Most of it is my girls’ school stuff. All in the attic….. Everytime I go up, I bring something down and ask if I can throw it out. Usually the answer is YES.

I am sad to think we are nearing the end of this travelogue… remember they had these in movie theatres before the movie?! Have loved tagging along with you : ) These photos made me feel parched just looking at them– really don’t know how you did all of this, every day/night was packed to the brim. The night photos of the temples are stunning.. I cannot imagine living someplace like this and seeing ancient history lit up at night while driving… goosebumps. And the olive trees are character trees, like the acacias in Africa. They are very old and very strong and will outlive us : ) But the most emotional part was your ending.. I have had to make so many decisions about my parents’ things… so hard and emotional. I have a pile of the pillow cases w/ trim, the doilies, the afghans (even pillows), vintage lace tablecloths, linen tablecloths, it goes on and on. I cannot throw them out or give them away.. the work was incredible and they are beautiful. And have had to clean and organize my things to make room… so it’s been double the effort and I am a saver, so all I have been doing is moving piles around trying to find space… SO I GET IT : ) Wonderful family photo… they are treasures!! XOXO

We were making plans for our last big European vacation hurrah and it was sad to think that our safety is so much more a consideration than in the past. Our 70’s is not the time for chancey adventures and instability around the globe is certainly a pause for thought. But then we thought,” If not now, when?”And…still haven’t booked the trip. Sigh.

Enjoyed the pretty pictures. Sorry it was so hot. My husband has been known to also take my purse on trips when it gets too heavy.

I too need to pitch and toss . Stuff accumulates. There was a flea market around here that advertised it was a wonderful place to visit for the “under stuffed”. I don’t know anyone like that! I approached my closet yesterday with every intention of thinning it out. Didn’t happen.

Hello Contessa, Those are beautiful ruins, beautifully photographed. Also, you say that you were hot and tired there, but in all the photos you look cool and fresh as a daisy! I love it when you share some of your photos “from the old days.”

My grandparents downsized tremendously when they retired to Florida, but when my grandmother passed away we found she had kept her old glove box, even though gloves were the last thing she would be needing in that hot climate, and the day of dress gloves had passed anyway. Still, that was once the symbol of femininity and being well dressed, and still important to her. We are glad she kept them, and they are now heirlooms.
