THOUGHTS!

July 10, 2023 129 Comments

July is here and we in CALIFORNIA are still waiting for summer to arrive!

WE have been having gray foggy mornings with sun about 2 in the afternoon.

PHOOEY!

Even BETTY the ROTTI is a bit MIFFED!

No sun means MOM does not go outside so NO BALL TOSSING!

NO WAY TO LIVE!

MY LATEST CHANGE OF LIFE!

The dry crepe skin just appeared!

How can you go from smooth skin no wrinkles to this OVERNIGHT!

Any advise out there?

Should I lather on the dry skin cream?

I think this was MORE of a shock than losing the hair at 56 years of AGE.

BOTH ARE MOMENTS OF HORROR!

There is NO WAY to prepare for this change of LIFE!

So, what do you do?

You go into THE GARDEN.

It helps rid the pain and the sudden OH MY GOSH I look like my Mother SYNDROME!

THE ITALIAN who picked me over others!

Why?I have no idea!

He spent $8.00 on a ball of Mozzarella di Buffalo back in 1984 only for me to say I preferred the one wrapped in plastic at the grocery store! He responded with you mean the one that BOUNCES off the walls?

What did I know!I grew up in AMERICA and had NO IDEA this was top of the line as far as cheese goes!

I had A LOT TO LEARN back then 37 years ago; in fact I am still LEARNING!

TABLECLOTHS and NAPKINS and PARTY FAVORS are being accumulated for the FESTIVITIES!

It has been YEARS since we did a garden dinner party and now 12 days out I am worried about the weather!Never mind I have NOTHING TO WEAR!

I know you are CRACKING up about that last line!

Even I am laughing out loud!

Must be SOMETHING IN THAT CLOSET of MINE TO COVER THY BOD WITH………..

The old chicken coop in the distance behind me.

The rebar arches still NOT COVERED AFTER MANY YEARS!

The garden was suppose to have a FOLLY.

A TURRET to climb for a glass of wine.

With a Bridge to meander too.

Toss that DREAM AWAY because now I would be too tired to walk all the way there and back!

THINGS HAPPEN FOR A REASON.

AN ODD NIGHT WE GO OUT TO DINE!

It is so cold I add leggings underneath my dress plus; I have terrible varicose veins and do not care to share the sight with you!I will SPARE you the details.I have done the VEIN SHOTS and worn the support hose and everything else involved.

NOTHING WORKS!

Here we are at the restaurant.

What should have been taken away from the start remained with us for the entire night.

Can you SPY IT?

The top of my STRAW.

The paper they left on for sanitary purposes.

The Bus Boy was all over us wanting to clear plates while one of us was still eating!

Do you think he took that piece of paper?

The Italian even moved it to his side to see if that made a difference!

NOPE!

This is the nicest dining restaurant in our area………..note the white tablecloths!

Just a BEAUTIFUL PHOTO………..of the Pacific Ocean.

THE SUN and MY CAMERA MET AND HAD TOO MUCH FUN CREATING THIS RAINBOW EFFECT!

Nice of it to FRAME MY FACE but what are those REBARS in my neck!

Zucchini Blooms from the garden.Best SNACK EVER!

Any of you READERS recall way back when I was in that

MAGAZINE

making these for WHERE WOMEN COOK?

I BEST GET BACK TO CLEANING AND COUNTING PLATES!

NOT EVERY DAY I HAVE 40 people for a sit down dinner in the garden.

Even though I’m not cooking and cleaning it is a LOT of WORK.

I just do not have the ENERGY ANYMORE!

Good thing I did it in my younger days………….as things change!

Don’t wait make the VISION HAPPEN NOW!

HAVE THOSE GIRLFRIENDS FOR LUNCH ONCE A MONTH.

DO A MONTHLY ROTATION Of GIRLFRIENDS HOSTING!

WE HAVE ALL HEARD OF DINNER CLUBS!

HOW ABOUT A POTLUCK CLUB?

EVERYONE BRINGS ONE ITEM TO SHARE FOR THE AMOUNT OF PEOPLE.

INVITE an INSTAGRAM GIRLFRIEND TO COME OVER!

Remember when I did those INSTAGRAM LUNCHEONS?

THAT WAS ONE OF THE MOST FAVORITES THINGS I HAVE EVER DONE!

AGAIN make it easy on yourself have everyone bring something!

MAKE GOOD USE OF OUR DAYS!

LOTS OF JOY AND LAUGHS.

THAT IS WHAT YOU WILL REMEMBER!

Somehow we got a jump start on the birthday month!

I WONDER HOW MANY BIRTHDAY WISHES I WILL GET TO BLOW OUT?

Thank You Nancy for starting THE COUNTDOWN!

Love this post. Is it just me or is there more of the color yellow in the images than usual. It’s like the sun, you are bringing summer to California single handedly. I will send you some of our summer from Phoenix. We have some summer sun to spare.

Lovely photos of you, LA CONTESSA. I particularly like the one of you peeking out from under the lilac tree, wearing the blue and yellow/gold kaftan. Your birthday plans sound wonderful and I can’t wait to see the photos on Instagram and/or here at the blog. Looks like you’ve been having a lovely birthday month in spite of the weather. I do hope fire season is less severe due to the cool, rainy summer. At least that’s an upside.

The straw paper! I guess the server couldn’t see the forest for the trees. Such an obvious thing to remove from the table. It’s one of those things you can laugh about. We go to our favorite water front hotel in the city (it’s the oldest in the city and has a ton of character). We often comment though on how odd the servers are. There are a few really good ones but…
We were there last night and I said to the woman who was pouring our water “What a beautiful evening.” I smiled at her and she laughed out loud like I had told a joke. Then another bus person came to our table to place a fake candle on it and she smirked and plopped it down without looking at us. Weird!
Anyhow, another one of my rambles. So excited to hear all about your birthday dinner!!
And don’t even get me started on aging body parts. Ugh. I have no specific cures, but I do moisturize after my shower. Still, the crepe on the arms is evident. No one told me about aging legs and bam, it happened to me.

What fun your birthday dinner party. You deserve a celebration. Love hearing the different opinions about aging and suggestions for dealing with crepe skin and all as I’m in my late 70s and dealing with this too. I’m off to the magical city of Paris in September and it’s just what I need. So much to deal with as we age. But just count our blessings and look for the joy each day. Your blog is so real and your openness very helpful. Thanks for sharing it helps to know we are not alone.
Happy birthday and will look forward to pictures.

    Hi Elizabeth,
Wonderful pictures you posted. The one of the Pacific Ocean is really extra special. You have a good eye. The photos of you in your garden are always a joy to see.
Happy early birthday, it must be coming up soon. It was nice seeing you out for dinner with the Italian, and taking you out to dinner. It’s a good sign you felt up to going out.
The aging process can take you back at times. My creepy skin happened over night too. It’s so attractive. After my shower I use
Cetaphil Moisturizing lotion, the one for dry to normal, sensitive skin. In fact I use that all over my body. No fragrance. It’s reasonably priced, buy it at Costco or good drug stores. I’ve used it forever and I love it. Maybe you have used it too.
    Take TLC of yourself.

I did laugh at you not having anything to wear for the big party. I am confident you will have the perfect dress and shoes hiding in that dressing room.
Easy for me to say but dont stress about those party preparations , it will all fall into place and be a wonderful evening.
After my last six months of surgery and treatment I am viewing the annoying things about my ageing self through a very different lens.
Enjoy your birthday celebrations , hopefully your weather will improve.

Regarding the crepey skin. I drink a good quality protein powder, and it has really helped my skin and hair. The best one for me is Vital Proteins with Collagen & Peptides. Unflavored can go into any drink. I have recently started mixing the chocolate flavored Vital Proteins into plain Greek yogurt for a protein pudding.
For my skin I mix Vitamin E oil and jojoba oil. Feels wonderful on the skin.
Best lotion I have used on my arms and legs is, Shikai Borage Therapy Advanced Formula. I have had really good results with it. Everyone’s body is different, but I hope this helps. Please ask your doctor or nutritionist if you are allowed protein powder.
It has been sad to see you feeling that you are old at such a young age. Our minds are so powerful. I know when health is low it’s hard to stay positive, but if you can, celebrate the moments in the day that bring joy. Love your body and heart. Tell them they are strong and healthy. Again, the mind is powerful. Believe in your own wellness . Sending you care and affection .

Happy Birthday from another Cancer 07/09/59. Did you go on a ? picnic?
A party for 40 is work even though you have others helping. Just be the Producer/ Director and sit back and enjoy.
As for creepy skin; that’s what I call it. I am skinny fat. We all get crepey skin. I remember a few years ago I discovered it doing a yoga plank and it was like what the hell!! Veins, oh I have them, a big huge one over my knee. Going to get some spider vines removed, or at least will try. So my way of covering them up is by self tanning lotion. It helps!

Your garden is glorious. If you could do a video of a walk through and tell us about what you have planted and other bits of fun info re animals etc. Yes do as I do go shopping in your closet! It is fun!

Ok, you say it is cold where you are! We are from Vancouver Canada, (it’s in the 80’s) with summer a cottage in Ontario on Lake of the Woods. June temps 80’s. Last night 46 degrees F. Thank good for the heated mattress cover! Warmer today. Enjoy the cooler days as that heat will return! Again Happy Birthday!

      HI MEL from INSTAGRAM!
      NO PICNIC………….
I have never used the self tanning lotion!!I think because I never expose my legs! The spider don’t bother me as much as the LARGE RUNWAYS that have been created by standing a hardship for me.
A video of the garden now is too late maybe if we get the second bloom.
The garden is THREE terraces all planted walls of white Jasmine and a white rose called MEDILAND.Some of those need to be replaced now!WE added fruit trees to one terrace two years ago so we have those to look forwards too. There are veggie bins further down that are doing well now.
Lots of GREEN TREES SURROUND our LOT so its beautiful to look up!

    Hi Contessa!

Yep, we’re all getting older and looking more like our mother or even grandmother! Wait till you’re 71 and you’ll see that you have your grandmother’s upper arms with the vertical wrinkles. My grandnephew (8 years old) asked me a few weeks ago what the wrinkles were in my upper arms so I said, ‘I’m old’!

Sorry to hear about the varicose veins and how the surgery, etc hasn’t helped. Good to know. I have a few varicose veins but they barely bother me. I’ll think twice before going to the doctor about them.

Love all your photos and you look so gorgeous!

See you tomorrow! Looking forward to it. I’m so lucky that I’ve also been part of the Instagram friends lunches!

I get your e mails re blog and have wordpress. And how I love receiving them. I think the secret re varicose veins is to have minimal invasive treatment. I had mine lasered about 12 years ago. I have a wonderful man who uses laser for all kinds of stuff. They are only beginning to return now so I will get them done again. No answer for crepiness except keep moisturising to help lessen the crepey look. My arms are ok..it is my upper legs that annoy me….SO just keep being you. Stay honest and chat…. it is not complaining….most of us feel the same and still are grateful we are here. We all have our own issues… but I too love getting advice from others. It is good to know what works.

Hi Elizabeth! I think a birthday month with many celebrations is wonderful! Love the post today and all the great photos. Always love hearing about you and your husband and your story together. Bouncing mozzarella, the only kind we grew up with here. I had to be coaxed to eat zucchini blossoms as a teen, my best friend next door had an Italian grandma who made those, as well as all kinds of delicious Italian foods and fresh pasta.
At 63, the crepey arms have set in here too. Just lately I’ve really noticed them and have been slathering on Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion and/or Gold Bond Crepe Corrector lotion. Not a cure, but improves the look a bit. Getting older can feel like a science experiment!
The heat has finally come on down here in So. Calif. High 80’s this week and morning sun finally.

The seasons do seem to be a bit out of kilter. I am in the south of New Zealand and we should be having mid winter weather, but it’s still quite mild. Nothing we can do about the weather. Which is just as well, can you imagine the squabbles about whether we should have sun or rain today!
Re the crepe problem…I am in my 80s and it has been creeping up for a wee while. I’m trying to drink lots of water as I think dehydration is a possible cause. We will see how that goes. I might have to accept the skin the way it is!
Wishing you a wonderful lunch and a very Happy Birthday!

DEHYDRATION could be KEY as I have had to cut back since MARCH!
IN HEART FAILURE they donot want you drinking a lot of water!
Because of the retention which makes the HEART work harder!!
Can’t say I hate that part as I am NOT a WATER DRINKER………but I do sip away through out the day and I am not retaining water yet!

    Dearest E
First of all you are a delight – you are so refreshingly honest and open about what is going on in your life. I don’t see it as complaining – I think we are all experiencing similar things as we age but no one likes to talk about it. I think talking about it is healthy! Look at the great tips that are shared here and knowing we are not alone in these experiences is definitely helpful. Speaking of which, I think we would all love the recipe for your friend’s sugar scrub if you get it! Your garden is so beautiful and looks like something out of a magazine. I’m sure your garden party will be a magical event for all who are lucky enough to attend. As far as not having anything g to wear?? I think you can go shopping in your closet and you will definitely find something fabulous!!! Yay to month long BD celebrations

    Dearest Contessa,
You were correct about WordPress not transferring over your subscribers. The last post I received from you was dated back in May. I don’t know what we can do about that, but I’ll I’ll thinking of something for you.
I’m so happy and pleased to hear of the early prepping for your Garden Birthday Soirée. It will be a beautiful evening under the canopy of your wonderful garden. I was so very fortunate one lovely afternoon to have shared it with you and your Italian. I still remember the incredible taste of homemade pasta and pesto!
There are so many memories of good people and celebrations yet to come! I am living vicariously through you at this moment. As you know, these days I’m up before the sun and out walking Leo, my Aussie, before the Las Vegas sun and heat set in for the day. The rest of the day I’m lurking under a rock like a lizard. Hahaha!

    Dear Elizabeth,

Happy birthday. I hope your garden party is a beautiful sunny success.

I’m quite a bit older than you (73) but I’ve had good luck dealing with crepey skin by using thick creams on my arms and legs every night. I like Cerave moisturizing cream, not lotion. Put it on damp skin and the difference is amazing. Skip one night and it’s full on crepe. It’s not a cure, just a plumper upper but it makes a significant visual difference. In California you may need a quick reapplication in the morning.

I use cerave like Valeri, when I am straight out of the shower. Then I put on a long sleeved cotton flannel night gown, cotton fleece sweat pants, loose socks and short cotton gloves, though I am now considering long evening gloves because the clothes help soften the skin the closer they are to your body. I use a lot of cream. Lotions don’t work nearly as well and I only use them if I don’t have time to allow the cream to dry, which takes a couple hours and is better if you do it before bedtime and then sleep 8-10 hours. This is easy for me because I’ve always bathed at night, (I love being clean when I go to bed, the shower helps relax me and prepares me for sleep and it makes my morning routine very simple). Every dermatologist I’ve seen, and I’ve seen a lot because I have eczema, recommends cerave. Swaddling myself in clothes is something I discovered via Vermont Country Catalog which sells cotton gloves for use with creams because I needed very soft hands for doing silk embroidery. Adding the gloves completely got rid of the calluses on the edges of my fingers and made my hands silky smooth, so I thought I’d try it with the rest of my body. Another benefit to doing this before sleeping is you won’t have any residual stickiness by morning. Btw, I turned 63 the end of May and most new people I meet think I’m around 40. Have a wonderful birthday! ? I can’t wait to hear about your garden party?!

Time moves on and with it come many changes, some good, some bad. People who say “age is just a number” haven’t yet encountered the changes in their body as they age, or the demising energy, or the arches and pains… It might be “just a number” as far as the brain goes and that’s only if your mental faculties remain healthy. However, my lovely Contessa, your are about to celebrate another birthday and that’s something to celebrate. So, HAPPY BIRTHDAY! I am thinking of you and yours (including the precious animals ) and sending much love to all, always. XOXOXO

I love reading about your adventures, parties, etc. Your photos are gorgeous. I am 72 and recently lost about 25 pounds. As a result, my upper arms are crepey. I am hydrating like crazy, and plan to talk to my dermatologist, but realistically I think it is something I have to get used to. I would rather be a little thinner and deal with the arms. I refuse to give up sleeveless apparel in the summer. I live in Texas and I am staring at a weeklong forecast of temps over 100! Thank you for spreading joy and style for us over 60’s!!

I won’t wear a pair of pants or capris again till December! lol. 40 people for a meal outside? Geez, I would be a nervous wreck, although I am lucky. My husband does all the cooking and planning! I’m not sure 40 people would show up if I was cooking! I’ve never eaten a squash blossom. How do they taste? I hope your party is a smashing success! don’t put yourself down and question why your hubby chose Contessa. You are an attractive woman with a lot of self-humour. Everyone gets older but don’t let wrinkles and gray hair spoil the fun that life can offer you every day if you allow it. You still have so many years and even more wrinkles, aches and pains ahead of you what do you want to do at 77 like me? Arms and legs can be covered. Take care of your face, put on a little make-up and smile, smile, that’s the secret of aging. And don’t forget with your whining you attract everything you complain about, what you don’t like about yourself. You also have the most important thing, 2 capable sons and an extraordinarily loving husband. Now you’re probably mad at me, but someone has to tell you, flattering and whining brings nothing but wrinkles and bad mood.

“whining” wasn’t the right word I chose but just talking about it, exchanging ideas, doesn’t attract what you want. I’m too honest and want to help at the same time and that’s often misunderstood. I think we both have to reconsider our vocabulary in order not to be misunderstood. But when I read the many comments (not only in your blog) there are so many flatterers that I get sick.
But I like you the way you are.

Contessa I so enjoy all your comments on your life health and gardens. For me it is a breath of fresh air to know I’m not alone in this aging process! I will turn 80 on August 8 and wonder how this could possibly be, my mind sings a different song than my body feels but hearing your thoughts make it OK and to continue positively onward. Naps are now a must do but then it will give a second wind to me so it’s Ok. Arms looking really wrinkled makes me love long sleeves of any kind so I add a light weight jacket but it’s Ok too. We can only go with all that these Golden Years (Ha Ha Ha!!!) dole out and laugh determined not to get old in fun thoughts and pleasures. My dear friend, i know i owe you a call. Way over due.
    Old, tired and wrinkled?
Well I say that’s the I earned these wrinkles…the jowls not so much.
The crepe skin….I make this amazing sugar scrub that I use faithfully every morning that is made with 7 essential oils and organic brown sugar. My whole family is hooked and at Christmas I make 600 jars to hand out to my customers! You might see some in the mail?1? The veins? I had success!!! My dermatologist did 3 rounds of shots and good to go for while! I think it is who you go to….
Energy? Well LADIES I don’t know about all of you but I have been waking up between. 3:30-4:00 am every morning for the past 7 years. I’m in bed at 9:00 pm but 3:30 is very early. The funny thing is I have Designers (I’m is the Home Furnishing business) that will text me asking if I am up and can they ask me a question(they now know I am usually up) and they are also up! They are around my age (66) so I know it is an age thing. A nap is not in the cards for me since I am on the road a lot for work.
Yes OLD. And as I say OLD AND WISE. Within my company, i am the oldest and they all call me “Grandma” and they come to me for all kind of advice, work and life related So is that a bad thing? No!!! I am embracing this time of life. Or at least I am trying to.
And just for the record…I am not embracing the jowls.

Dear Contessa, so sorry I don’t have any cure for your arms. I noticed different things happening to my body when I turned 70. I had no idea I had dry eyes until my Eye doctor told me, so drops twice a day for me. The other day I just happened to notice that my hair is so dry. Now once a week a deep moisturizing for 24 hours is my MO. 20 years ago my vaginal area was very dry. I’ve been using cream which helps with the PH balance.
My 102-year-old mother is a great reference for me. I can only hope that I will take after her. She has no pain, she only takes a thyroid pill, she has a wonderful attitude. She exercises every day, she drinks a little wine or beer every day. reads and she’s got all of her marbles!
Like you, I love to entertain and I like to do all the cooking. It is so much work, it takes me about a week to get prepared, and 2 days to clean up. I have a wonderful husband that knows the drill and helps tremendously.

I love your blogs, I had the sme problem re hair loss and suddenly noticed when trying on a potential’buy’ it quite put me off and I couldn’t get home quick enough. Varicose veins been there still have them so wear trousers or longish dresses and then crepey arms yes that here too , looking like my mother finding I have similar mannerisms . But we are all unique it’s a matter of recognising the negatives and costing them aside, forget them luv luv

    Hi Contessa,
Good luck on your luncheon! I get you don’t have the energy to clean. I asked my grandmother, how she keep a nice home. She said , she didn’t clean so much as tidy up. My son and his family of five are arriving on Thursday. I am tired just thinking of them coming to stay. My husband says just clean the bathrooms . So I will follow his advice for once and that of my granny. I am now soon 72 and the big shock is how tired I am these days. Taking a nap is a must. I wish I had more energy but I don’t. It’s about accepting life on life’s terms. You are a lovely woman with a lovely home and a husband who knows your value.

      THANK YOU………….
I understand the nap situation too but I am 62.Alot of my time is spent sleeping and it takes me a good 30 minutes to wake up from that nap!
YOU ENJOY THE FAMILY……..how lucky you are to have them!

    Dear One (Contessa also Elizabeth),
First off…what gorgeous photographs in this post. Glowing flowers, glowing You! Betty portrait is so, so very sweet. What a Cutie!
    Yellow and Blue…Yay!
    Pressed flower candles…wonderful!
Hats of all sorts! Yes, yes and more yes!
Keeping warm. Yes, I have on my bamboo fleece from Bryn Walker almost every morning. It has been cold in Hiller Highlands in the mornings.
Zucchini Blooms seem extra special. Only certain times of the year. I have only ever tasted Squash Blossoms which may very well be the same as your Zucchini Blooms. My mouth is watering.
I have no solutions for crepe skin. I am more full-figured so my crepe skin at age 67 is plumped up a bit. Varicose veins are my Nemesis! I have not tried shots but try to use the compression hosiery to help with the veins and swelling. I love to have my feet in more open shoes. My feet seem to prefer fresh air. Those various compression socks are a drag. I am in your boat.
Restaurant pet peeve…taking one diners dishes away while any other guest is still eating. I’ve had the discussion with Service Folks and they say that Management likes them to be attentive. I feel rushed since I am the slow eater. I don’t think there is a fix for this peeve. I do try to stop it from happening when they reach for my spouse’s plate and I am still dining.
July Birthdays: I am also in your boat. I am a Cancer/Crab/Moonchild/July Birthday club member (7/16). July is a great month to have a birthday. A July Birthday can be a highlight of the Summer.
Your festivity in your garden will be enjoyed by everyone with eyes to see, noses to smell, ears attuned to delightful conversations and hearts to swell with Joy of the present moments. And the tastes! Enjoy! Let the bulk of the work be trusted to others. You are encouraged to simply Shine!
Contessa, your ideas inspire and set my imagination on a lively path. Mrs. Dalloway would approve. Queen, Andrea Serrahna would bless your gathering.
    Happy Birthday
Thank you for sharing your ideas, beauty and heart.

LETS GET TOGETHER WITH ANDREA ONE DAY!
YES SQUASH BLOSSOMS are the same……………
YOUR PET PEEVE AND MINE!I guess we are old school. My feeling is the staff is not trained correctly. My husband pointed out that todays customer does not want an empty plate in front of him and he really could careless if the other person is finished or not.Does not make a difference to the customer.BUT A PIECE OF GARBAGE THE STRAW PAPER SHOULD BE REMOVED!I ended up telling the waitress to pass it on!For their knowledge.Could make a difference in THE TIP!

I saw those lightly breaded squash blossoms and thought I MUST ask for a recipe! We get them up at the farm just now…I stuff with goat cheese and black olives. But that breading helps keep the shape and add a crunch….YUM! Looking forward to July birthday festivities for ALL of us ruby ladies!

Don’t fret, Contessa: while there is beauty in youth, there are other kinds of beauty in age. I saw the latter every day in my 96-year-old mother-in-law!

Not to worry, Contessa … Mother Nature will not dare spoil your birthday festivities! Nothing to wear? Oh my. I don’t know what to say, I’m rendered speechless. 😉 As for the crepe … it hit me sooner and no amount of cream does any good. And the veins, I had same experience with three (THREE) rounds of injections and those dreadful hose. Oh the horror of it all. What can we do but maintain our sense humor and appropriate hemlines. Your Instagram lunches were the best and I was honored to attend one … and you know I’m all for pot-luck. Here’s to sunnier (but not hot) days ahead and more delightful dispatches from Contessa’s garden. xo
