Greetje Kamminga for AGELESS STYLE!

June 28, 2019 105 Comments

Although I just turned 65, I am still working full-time and have done so since I was 17. April next year I will stop working at my job and contemplate on what I will do next. Money will be less of an issue then (I am very lucky in this respect). I am an advertising manager working at a large bank, the person between marketing and the advertising agency.

I started taking (very bad) photos of my outfits when colleagues who went to a different department complained they wouldn’t be seeing what I was wearing every day. One thing led to another and in December 2012 I started my own blog. Turned out it was the hobby I always wanted. I love every aspect of it. Is it narcissism? No, I just like to entertain, to make people laugh, to create and I have an unduly interest in adorning myself. Always have, even when I was 12 years old and penniless.

How would you describe your style?

More jeans than dresses.

But really liking so many styles that you could say my style is “all over the place”.

What inspires your signature style?

My legs. As my signature style is skinny jeans with a fitted jacket. My legs are my assets and I will emphasize them as much as I can. If there is anything I learned these past six years of blogging, it is how to emphasize my good points and how to downplay my “lesser points”. A fitted jacket gives me a waist and hips, creating a nice hourglass figure. In reality I have no bum, no hips and rather a thick waist haha.

What is your favorite accessory?

A necklace. I have A LOT OF necklaces. Of course you win in this area Elizabeth; you are the queen of necklaces. I cannot stand in your shadow, but necklaces are really my favorite accessory as well. We both love the Angela Caputi ones.

What are your favorite color combinations?

Oh dear, I have so many. Yellow and blue (or black), cream with brown or green, orange with blue or green, pink with green, purple with pink (and orange), red/white/blue, fuchsia with blue, black and white (or cream) usually with some or a lot of red thrown in.

Do you have a signature piece that defines your style?

TWO: jeans and a fitted jacket. But I “do” a mean dress as well.

What are your style strengths?

Not giving any thought to what other people think.

Being confident. I was lucky with my character and my upbringing. Gave me a lot of confidence.

Do you have a style Muse?

Not really, but I do love the style of Victoria Beckham. So sad I cannot afford her clothes. Or perhaps I can. This month I went to England and came across clothes by her I could afford although still not cheap. Perhaps she does a pret-a-porter collection? Have to look into that.

What are your favorite beauty products and why can’t you live without them?

I do not have any beauty products and I can live happily without them. It will sound odd, but I do not have any interest in beauty products. I will continue to do my make-up as I have learned a long time ago and only change it a bit every 10 years or so. Strange, right?

What advise do you have for women over 50?

Dare a bit more. You may think everybody is looking at you when you do <fill in whatever you are afraid of> but really, most people are only interested in themselves and don’t take a blind bit of notice of others. If they do say something about you, keep in mind they are not you, they evaluate things from their character, their perspective. Again, they are a different person. You are you. Basically: do not care what other people think or say.

Use colour near your face, find out what colours suit you best. You don’t have to go to a consultant. Just have fabric pieces in many colours ready and hold them near your face. You will see immediately what drains you and what doesn’t. I used to love black and white as a combination and I still wear it as it is so easy and always good. But it is not right for me, doesn’t make me sparkle. I found out that bright, saturated colours near my face make me sparkle. Me in bright fuchsia is so much better than me in camel.

Do you have any style rules that you live by or do you choose to break the rules?

My (and I emphasize MY) style rule is to present the best version of myself that I can create. Because it make ME happy. Which usually means a flattering hourglass outfit, but if I want to wear a big wide shapeless dress that I think is awesome or a pair of boyfriend jeans, or a pair of trousers with a dropped crotch, I will not hesitate. And I do not care whether other people like it or not. My choice, my pleasure. I am not the other person.

For myself I have chosen not to wear sleeveless anymore as I don’t like seeing the wrinkles on my arms. And to have the hem of a skirt on my knee, because that is more pleasing to my eye. Do I think every woman over 50 should do this? Absolutely not. Choose what makes you happy and let “rules” like “no white after labour day” or “no fitted tops after 40” not influence you. What a load of nonsense.

What are your online and or boutique sources?

Sorry, too many to tell. I am basically an old school shopper. I like to go into boutiques and try stuff on. As I live in the Netherlands, it won’t do your readers any good to tell them the addresses. However, if they come over to my tiny country, they will find two tabs at the top navigation of my blog, called Amsterdam and Haarlem.

There are enough addresses in those posts to keep you busy for a month. Online shopping is very good for items from small entrepreneurs, from Ebay or Etsy and if you cannot find the item in the shop but it is still available online. I suppose if I were to live in the USA, I would shop Nordstrom.

Do you have a particular diet or exercise regime that you follow?

Yes, I do no eat too much, keep track of my weight every week and if I gain more than 2 kilo (4 ½ pounds), I will cut down immediately. I call that “keeping my margin small”. And I exercise twice a week at a fitness club for an hour each time. It keeps my body and muscles supple, lithe.

Do you have any anti aging foods and or supplements that are your go to’s?

Only Vitamine D3 and Magnesium (for muscle spasms at night).

That is all. I do not believe in anti aging food or supplements.

It is just marketing.

Elizabeth you continue to delight with your selection of fashion friends you introduce us to on your blog. The longer I read Greetje’s interview the more I felt like I was listening to a girlfriend. Absolutely enjoyed seeing her fashion style but really-really loved her attitude and confidence about aging and beauty products. What a breath of fresh air, I want to have cocktails with Greetje! 🙂

WHAT A BEAUTIFUL WOMAN! So many details of her physical aspect that I can comment on that I find wonderful. Since I don’t know her, I can’t say anything other than what I can see, but what strikes me is her posture. The clothing wears HER. She stands with dignity and poise, and in my opinion, she has the right proportions of shoulders to hips that makes everything she is wearing hang gracefully. I try to stand as the dancer that I was and still am, but my hips and shoulders are not equally proportioned….many have and probably will still tell me to forget all of that, and there is nothing I can do about that other than love how what I wear wears me. Statuesque and wonderful are both of you. And dearest Contessa, I am so glad to hear that you were able to listen to the music on my blog post. I had two bloggers who said they could not hear a thing or see the video! I will go watch that documentary on the Great Pavarotti and come back!

Dear Anita, never believe photos. If you were to take a photo of me when I am not aware of it, you would see that I slouch. I hate that. Often photos for the blog need to be taken again and again because I do not stand straight. I have worked on this my whole life and don’t seem to manage it.
As for proportions.. I have an inverted triangle shape: broad shoulders, small hips, no bum. I just have found out how to disguise that with clothes. When you look at the site of 40PlusStyle you will see many tips for many shapes.

I agree with Greetje about everything except beauty products. I believe that serums and hyaluronic acids have contributed greatly to keeping my skin younger looking. Now if I could just find something, other than Botox, that worked for deep lines. xoxox, Brenda

Hi Brenda, well, perhaps my cynicism towards beauty products is unfounded and I missed some wonderful ways to fight the wrinkles. As, boy, do I have wrinkles. The thing is, I will never know or be able to prove it. We cannot go back in time and do it all again only a bit differently. Too late now so suppose.

I am a regular reader of Greetje’s blog. I love looking at her outfits, but mostly love her entertaining style of writing, her humour and the touch of Dutch in her blog (I miss Holland now and then, since I live elsewhere in Europe).

I absolutely loved reading this item. It’s very much Greetje, but a side of her that you do not read very often on her blog. It’s the good and solid advice to do as you like and to be aware that other people are just that: other people than you. Looking at the world through their eyes, with their priorities. Wise words from a funny & fashionable lady.

    Love, Lieske

    Hi there CONTESSA

Always enjoy the ageless style posts. Tho they make me realize I have no style – have never gotten into clothes/fashion. Now maybe at the age of 70 and reading these posts I will start giving more thought to a “style”. What I have going for me is that people do not believe I am 70 – perhaps 60 they say but not 70.

You will find a lot of information there. About body shape, about proportions and colour etc. It has helped a lot of women.

What you see is what you get with Greetje. I love how much she experiments, how sometimes she thinks she gets it wrong but really knocks it out of the park! I think she’s a born entertainer (just like you Elizabeth!) which is why blogging comes so naturally to her.

One of Greetje links is titled Haarlem. I went Haarlem once and it was magical. An exciting visit to another glorious world; Franz Hals house, the market in the town square and that magnificent cathedral. A real treat for this Southern California native. Holland is a wonderful country. Thank you Elizabeth for introducing us to new people. Your garden is so beautiful after all our rain. California has never had such a lush spring in recent memory. Greetje is gorgeous! Thanks for sharing her here with us, Contessa. I love her style. Reminds me a little of my own. I particularly like her attitude about ‘no rules’ and ‘what makes you feel good”. I couldn’t agree more. Color is something sorely lacking in some brands these days. Although I like neutrals, I also agree with Greetje, that color near the face is best. Cheers and enjoy your garden. You’re looking radiant as well, Contessa.

When I went for a colour consult, the nice lady told me that black and white near my face was a harsh combination which would emphasize my wrinkles. If I wanted contrast I’d better opt for forrest green with cream. I followed her advice as I could see she was right. Now if I wear black and white (still my favourite) I add colourful earrings or a scarf.

Hmmm… a lot in common… year of birth, working full-time since 15 (insisted my mother drive me to get ‘working papers’–wanted to buy my own car– wore a shift dress made by my mother for an interview at an upscale boutique in Westport, CT and was hired!!), love classic clothes, wedges and block heels, jeans of all colors, old school beauty supplies (cold cream, vaseline etc.), taking life in stride with confidence and a sense of humor (very important). A working girl by day (and by night writing). Legs are best, knees are weak. Live with husband, one cat, and one dog (stars of Fantastic Tails : )

LOVED meeting Greetje… in some ways it felt like looking into a mirror… have subscribed to her blog and can’t wait to read her archives… Ageless Style is such a treat, congratulations to Cindy and to you, dear Contessa (and I agree, you OWN leopard print.) XO

I love Greetje! Her blog is my favorite blog that I receive! I actually go back into her archives to see what she has worn years ago! The name of her blog is apt, because she HAS NO FEAR OF FASHION! She will wear most anything that is flattering to her! She is much braver than I could ever be with my clothing! She does help me to become a little bit more adventurous with my style of clothing. She looks great in heels (I hope your knee is better now) and I am jealous cause I cannot wear them anymore! Keep up the great outfits, Greetje!

Oh Linda, what a lovely comment. Thank you. I am beaming here with pride. And am also a bit shy over so much appreciation. Don’t be jealous about the heels. As I have often said in my posts: they are for the photo (and for work, where the floors are smooth and I don’t have to walk much). Usually they are in my bag and I am walking on flats until I arrive and switch.
And no, the knee is not better. As a matter of fact: Knee is hating my holiday. Oh well.

Hmmm.. Taste of France, here is a confession: I can still wear heels but not for a long time. Preferably in the office with flat, smooth surfaces and not having to walk for too long a stretch. Otherwise I wear flats (while hating them) and keep the high heels in a bag to switch when I arrive. I have arthrosis in my left knee and got inflammation on top of that. Still trying to get rid of the last symptoms after 1 1/2 year. Never just believe the photo. As my mother used to say when I was swooning over a great hair photo: “Don’t be jealous. As soon as this photo was taken, somebody behind her took his hands away which were keeping her hair up and looking luscious”. Haha.

      Hi April,
Thank you for the compliments. I hope you have interest in the subject of dressing as that is key. If you can’t really care or find it pretty boring, it is hard. If you really like it, it is a matter of focussing.

Greetje is so chic and what a fun person. I love her outlook on life and wearing what pleases her. She has an eclectic style and looks great in casual and dressy. Dutch women are very stylish and she is no exception. I love that white dress on her. Gorgeous. Well I am inspired now to try more fun combinations and enjoy dressing up. Thank you Greetje for your positive message to women. I am off to follow her now! So many cool people from this series.

P.s. You look so amazing in the leopard..and the necklace! Best look yet on you E. xoxo

      Hi Kim,
That is a lovely way of putting it: “an eclectic style”. Sounds so much better than “all over the place”haha. I can show you a lot of Dutch women who aren’t very stylish. I think in every country there are people with style and without. I don’t think it has much to do with where you are born/live. Although… those Italian women and the Parisian women…
I hope you will indeed follow my blog and that I am able to amuse you (for a long time). Thank you for your compliments.

When I found out what certain colours did for me, I couldn’t go back. I love bright colours. And now and then I throw in something like the white dress. Which is rather a bright thing too, right?
Block heels are so much more comfortable than stilettos. And often more modern as well. Thank you for your compliments.

Greetje’s style speaks to me. I’m not as tall and perhaps a little thicker but I think she and I share the same body type, made for skinny jeans! She looks happy and self-assured in every pic. How nice is it to reach a stage — feared by many — where we can give not a whiffy whit what others think?!? I’m with you there, Greetje!

Hi Mithra, I think reaching this age, helps with the gaining of confidence and the not giving a whiffy whit (as you put it) what others think. You have been through so much and you have recognized how little it means when people judge you. On the other hand, I have always been a bit unaware (or ignorant) of what people think of me. Just never noticed it too much. As long as people weren’t really out to hurt me, I accepted their opinion for what it was: an opinion. I could choose to do something with it or not. I was so pleased when the teasing by fellow students stopped when I reached the age of 16. After that had stopped nobody was out to get me anymore. Yay.

Indeed, to still have a “real job” in one’s sixties (fortunate!) isn’t a given these days. Too many of us have been sidelined, regardless of credentials and experience and most importantly, ability to contribute.

Hi “D.A. Wolf”. thank you for your compliments. Red is indeed a very good colour for me. Any kind of “red” really, like orange, purple or fuchsia. As long as the colours are bright, saturated. Red is my favourite colour although it is difficult to choose.
The fact I still have a “real full-time job” is perhaps because I never stopped working? I don’t have children of my own, only a lovely stepdaughter. Of course I have been lucky, I’ll be the first to admit that. Being sidelined can happen to anyone.
As for shoes: I always thought others had lovely shoes, but I guess I have a rather good collection myself now hahah.

We have a not dissimilar shape and while I do admit that I can look rather good in the trousers/jeans and fitted top combo, I’m no real follower of Fashion and I tend to go a bit off-piste with some of my outfits and wear basically whatever crazy thing that makes me happy, haha! Knees stay under wraps, notwhithstanding, as they are gruesome but opaque tights cover a multitude of sins if the hemline is no longer to my liking.

That leopard lurking under the jasmine looks mighty fine, too!!
