OLAF and AN OLD FRIEND

May 4, 2024 60 Comments

As you know OLAF was my new piggy.

We went through a few names before settling on OLAF.

He was a big boy and needed to lose weight which we did successfully over months.

At first OLAF and BETTY (the dog) got on fine.Betty was happy to have a new HOUSEMATE.

However, over time she got tired of his leave me alone “grunts”.They then starting biting each other.BETTY was stubborn as a mule. She wouldn’t budge from her sitting spot. After time OLAF learned he had to walk around, out of his way to get to where he wanted to be.This continued for months.

Here we have BETTY and THEODORABLE sitting on the old vintage chair that I loved as it made one sit up straight. As you can see someone had a good time ripping the fabric off! That came after the hole making in the gold cushion cover. Theodore is sitting on!

Olaf loved to pull it to the ground and rip it!

HE HAD A TASTE for OLD TEXTILES………

Which made me think he is not getting enough food! So, I up the kibble by 1/4 of a cup………..

As you can see he gets an assortment of vegetables, carrot, cucumber and or zucchini and a head of Romain lettuce along with 1/2 cup of piggy kibble with a dash of warm water…….

We would add fruit in as well to alternate.

His eyes were NEVER WIDE OPEN.

He did allow me to clean them.

Ears too.

And of course he had his mani/pedi every few months by that woman EMILY THE TRIMMER!

I ADORED HIM………..even if he destroyed three dog beds and we had to put up baby gates so NO ENTRY to BETTY’S BED which resided in our bedroom. He was an early riser as we are early risers and that meant weekends too.I could hear him coming from the living room clop clop on the tile floors. If no sound came from us he would move furniture around in the hallway! All doors in the house had to remain shut due to the fact he could go in and turn around and lock himself in. A tight spot for a piggy his size!!For example, the guest bathroom! It could have something to do with SAINT FRANCIS of ASSISI resides in there in the shower!

This was OLAF’s bedroom. He moved himself from behind the sofa to under this table and brought all his blankets! There were an assortment of blankets. Six I believe! From sheepskin to Johnny Was and TJ.MAXX.

As cute as this was we did have a fear of the STUFF STACKED ON TOP of the table would TOPPLE ONE DAY!

The fear left me, but NEVER THE ITALIAN once we took scissors to the purple TAFFETA TABLECLOTH and went to town.No more FLOUNCE on the FLOOR hanging out looking OHHHH SO ELEGANT!

SO his glide in and out was seamless and no fear of getting caught up in material that would then be pulled by a very STRONG BEASTIE BOY!

I ACTUALLY LOVED WATCHING HIM GO IN AND OUT!

SO without a doubt its a little too quiet around here……………..

So, on May Day 2024 OLAF left at 5 pm to travel due east to his RESCUE HOME with many other pigs.I cried for a good long while………..

He brought me so much JOY.

I battled with the ruined things……..verses HIM.

I would say to myself what or who gives you MORE JOY IN YOUR LIFE NOW?

The old stuff you have acquired or this PET PIG.

Well, the answer to that left MAY FIRST 2024……………….. I WILL MISS YOU!

Last SUNDAY I had my ITALIAN drive me to NOVATO to meet up with an old friend from elementary school days! Here we are after not seeing each other for over 50 years!

Now this is a FUN STORY!

Above is KITTY aka Katherine.

Who I had searched for when Facebook came out and the internet etc……….

NO LUCK.

Friday night my phone informed me I had a text message and I was slow to answer due to having dinner………..once up from the table I looked. It was from my girlfriend Celeste.

Another old, old friend who lived above me growing up.

We three all played together when we were very young.

Enter Celeste’s SON who works for a grocery store in Tiburon. His employer sent him to another store in Novato on Friday to work as they were short staffed; I assume.I really do not know why nor is that important to my story! He must have been assigned to the Bakery department where Kitty works as they got into a conversation and Kitty said she had grown up in the area and explained where exactly.Well, the son knew the area well as he too grew up there. So, my friend Kitty says do you know such and such FAMILY?

SON reply’s Celeste is my MOTHER!!!!

SO that text was from Celeste telling me she had FOUND KITTY!!!

Many texts back and fourth and I call the grocery store at 8pm that night to see if she is there.

CONTESSA……..bubbling over with JOY to a complete stranger.”Hello does a Kitty……….work there?

YES!

After I tried to explain the CONNECTION! She told me to call back the next morning!

Which I did at 8:25 am on SATURDAY.

This call I was MORE DIRECT!

CONTESSA;” HELLO BAKERY PLEASE!”

“One moment Please.” says clerk.

Another woman answered in the bakery department and without hesitation I ask for Kitty.

Hello………….says Kitty.THE EXACT SAME VOICE I REMEMBERED from elementary school days!

CONTESSA SAYS, I know your aren’t sitting down but this is a voice from your past!

“Who is it?”says Kitty!

AND I tell her my name……….there is a moment of silence. Then I go on to say I have been looking for you for YEARS!She responds by saying and I too have been looking for YOU!

AND THERE YOU HAVE IT WHAT A SMALL, SMALL WORLD!

I had THE ITALIAN drive me to NOVATO the next day to give her a hug and from there we have another date planned to get together and do A LOT MORE CATCHING UP!

OVER 50 YEARS of catch up CHATTER!

HAVE YOU EVER STUMBLED UPON AN OLD FRIEND who had popped into your head from time to time as the years went by?I can not even begin to tell you the THRILL IT HAS BROUGHT TO BOTH OF US.I have to say OUR MEMORIES are still there from the monkey bars and dodge ball to KITTY being THE PITCHER OF THE MIGHTY MUSHROOMS and Ballet classes and salamander catch and release!

AND we LOVED to watch DARK SHADOWS every day at 4 pm after school!

How ON EARTH DO WE REMEMBER THIS DETAIL?!!

Speaking of detail……….

Somehow, this item came up in our conversation.

Kitty remembered it being on the table at my Mother’s home.Recall SACCHARINE?They were tiny little white pills the ladies would use for coffee or tea!

I told her it is sitting beside MY SINK RIGHT NOW!

Well, I wrapped it up and gave it to her on HUG DAY!

One less item MY BOYS will HAVE TO TOSS!

NOT our BEST PHOTO but here I am with MY BRITISH STEP MOTHER who turned 90 in APRIL.

SHE IS STILL CLOTHES SHOPPING and just had her kitchen remodeled after years of talking about having it done!WE HAVE THE CAREGIVERS TO THANK FOR THAT!Seems one was cooking fried banana’s on the stove top and the hood caught fire which then caught more of the kitchen on FIRE!

A BLESSING as now she has a NEW KITCHEN!

KEEP WISHING FOR THINGS AS THEY MAY STILL COME TRUE!

So sorry to have to decide to let Olaf go but it’s important to make good decisions, even though they’re very hard. He shall also miss you!

I always enjoyed all the stories about photos about him.

This is my thrilling story of reconnecting with a lost friend. I am a proud Army Brat, but because of moving so often with my dad’s career, friends came in and out of my life often–never to be seen or heard from again. I spent my last 2 years of high school in a DOD (Department of Defense) High School in Pusan, South Korea. My father was stationed there and we lived on a military base from 1967-1969. I had a good friend and class mate who was from Athens, Greece. We had lost touch with each other after the early 1970’s. She was not on Facebook, but her husband and 5 daughters were. She sent me a message and we reconnected about 10 years ago. It was so amazing and fun to talk about our past lives living in Korea. I was on a cruise to Greece with my bother and his family about 6 years ago and we got to meet up for an amazing dinner and visit. We had tears when we parted. Then 2 years ago I returned to Athens with my husband, it was so fun to reconnect again with my girlfriend and her husband. What a wonderful dinner and evening we shared with my Greek girlfriend and her husband. Hoping she will come to visit me next in Ca. to keep out thrilling adventure going.

Heartbreaking I know for you. I had two springers that drew blood often, and also hard on the home. Very stressful to all. I hope you keep us posted on Olaf’s future adjustment. I know you are comforted by the rescue taking him back. A reminder to us all, how amazing these generous people and organizations are to all of us that cherish animals of all kinds. Enjoy the sun and friends ahead Olaf. Maybe a mud bath or two.
I’m picturing Olaf’s Joy reuniting with former friends at the same time you have. That is a very good thought. I hope it’s your thoughts too as you stroll through your beautiful garden. Hugs

Well I will fill you in on the phone but yes way less stress on a daily basis is what I needed most of all.Coping with a bit too much with health now.Spending more time getting chest X-rays and Ct scans than at the grocery store!!!
I either have a lung infection or walking pneumonia at the moment!Do you think anyone has listen to my chest?Thats a NEGATIVE!Have finished around of two different antibiotics and I feel worse!
      It’s NEVER ENDING WITH ME!

    Hi Elizabeth,
Wow, a huge decision you had to make. I know from everything you shared that you were a wonderful mama to Olaf. From everything you shared it sounds like the house will be running in a more peaceful way. Not all fur kids get along, they can be just like people. I can imagine it’s a big adjustment but Olaf will be back connecting with her buddies.
Your Kitty story is wonderful. It sounds like you are going to pick right back from where you two left off 50 years ago.
Wow, 90 years young, your stepmother looks very good. Keeps herself up so well. You must have such admiration. We can all learn from her generation. They have a strong will and just make things happen without hearing complaints.

    Carissima Contessa,

A Beautiful, bittersweet post. We all adored Olaf and his antics, but that being said, it must have caused a lot of stress on Betty. Not a good thing. Do you notice Betty is happier now? I am glad Theodorable was not affected!
The Universe is quite Interesting at times… it knew you would be extremely sad about Olaf, so it brought you your old friend! Is that not WONDERFUL?!?!
Happy Belated Birthday to your step-mum! She looks positively Beautiful at 90!!!! God Bless!

Such hard decisions we have to make about pets… you were the perfect mama to Banksy and Olaf, the very best. So much patience, love, and care for an animal few have as in-house pets… they were so, so lucky! Very glad he’s back at the rescue sanctuary, where he will be fine and safe and have other pigs for friends : ) Still, very difficult to make the decision, but it was obviously the right one.
And it’s wonderful (the word serendipity seems right : ) how you reconnected with your childhood friend… she came back into your life when Olaf left…

    Hi there Contessa

Oh my sad that Olaf has to find a new home but it had been a very trying time for all so it is for the best. Olaf had such good care/attention.
Beyond fabulous your meet up! More good times are ahead. I had an American pen pal in the late 60s – he went off to Viet Nam and I heard no more. Well I got curious a couple of years ago as to what had happened to him and tracked him down on LinkedIn! Yes I found him! We email every so often and he will be coming out west with his wife next January and we will meet up!
    Love your entrance way.

    Hi Elizabeth!
I know what a painful decision you had to make in re-homing sweet Olaf. You did a wonderful job with him, and slimmed him down as well! He knew he was loved. One of our dogs also loved sleeping under the cloth over a round table, just her sleeping face would peek out.
Oh yes, I remember Dark Shadows and how much we loved it as kids. Barnaby! Whatever we were doing we had to stop and watch, even in the Summer we’d leave the swimming pool to watch, wrapped in our towels.
I’m finding at 64 that reconnecting with old friends and childhood friends is just wonderful. The shared memories and history are priceless treasures.
I peek at your instagram and your garden is looking lovely. We woke down here in La Mesa to rain and wind this morning. Good for the garden.
    Take care,

Oh, and I forgot to say, I watched “Dark Shadows” every day after school too! Remember how they would have periods where they went back in time for a few weeks or months? All of the same actors played different parts, except for Barnabas and Angelique, who were immortal. Barnabas was forever in love with Josette, who left behind a music box. David Selby was so handsome! And who was the psychiatrist (Julia?) who knew Barnabas’ “secret” and protected him? She was around when Victoria Winters (the character’s name) was working as a governess for Roger’s child. The local tavern was called “The Blue Whale.” How is it that I can remember this stuff? What a fun show! You could do a post on it!

Oh Contessa! I did not fully appreciate the extent to which Mr. Piggy was disrupting your home. Something had to be done, and you did it; the right thing is often the hard thing. Be comforted that he enjoyed his time with you and probably thought he was at a spa. I hope things will settle down there now for Miss Betty. Looks like she did her best. As Sandra said, your stepmother is beautiful. Since I just got a new kitchen, I understand her joy. You are sweet to see this through for her. I loved hearing about Kitty! Seeing the picture of you two made me think of you both as children. I bet she was thrilled to get the little silver container. What a treasure to be connected to an old friend. I am still in touch with a couple of grammar school chums. These relationships are precious. Be well.

My neighbor had a rescue pig. His name was Gilbert. Gilbert grew to be 450 pounds. He was an outdoor pig. For the first while Gilbert wasn’t adjusting very well and we were all worried about his health. Then the next neighbor over got a couple of black sheep. Gilbert and the sheep would visit at the fence and got along well. A hole was cut into the fence to allow the sheep access to Gilbert’s yard. After that Gilbert’s health improved, al he needed was more companionship. I hope Olaf has friends at his rescue, it’s all he needs.
I loved Dark Shadows too. Used to watch it every day after school. Barnabas..what a character.

You have the wrong Rita. I’m in Victoria, Australia. However, I will answer your question, when I did wear red lipstick it was Lancome. Can’t recall which one. Have a wonderful week.

yes! when i got my first computer (1991) i joined an alumni group for my high school in japan (US Air Force military dependents’ school). The oldest brother of one of my best friends, whom I’d never known or met, saw my name & immediately alerted his sister. we’d lost contact since 1978. now i see friends from my teenage years occasionally. such a blessing after so many years away (we all drifted in different directions once we left Japan). frank (my man) came to pick me up after one of the get together and discovered he & someone from my high school (friend of a friend of a friend) had a mutual friend in san francisco where we live. (frank was born & raised here & never left.) amazing! 5th degree of separation. 🙂

so in your case & mine, a male relative of our girlfriend made the connection & got us together again!!! so nice. so right.

sorry about olaf. but glad for betty. she was there first and it was her home first. thank goodness for your poor upholstery too. the destruction was awful to see.

I went to see Kitty yesterday as I had an appointment to meet a new client at the coffee shop next door to her shop. It was lovely to see how happy she seems. I’m looking forward to our get together. Old friends can be a balm for our souls.
I’m so sorry about Olaf. I’m glad the rescue could take him. ???

Oh my goodness, so much happening. Sorry about Olaf. I’m sure he’s in Pig heaven with all of his buddies. Did you have to chop all those veggies every day? Goodness that’s a big job. But very healthy.
Love seeing your old friends. I’m still in touch with my grammar school friends. Can’t replace them. Your Step mother is beautiful. That’s going pretty far to get a new kitchen.

It is ONE VEGETABLE OR TWO NOT ALL AND YES CHOP CHOP!Faster than making our dinner!I enjoyed making it look pretty for him as he would nudge my ankles with his snout and say HURRY UP!!He was a slow eater and seemed to enjoy each bite!
