JULY JEWELS!

July 3, 2026 71 Comments

40 years ago JULY 5th; I climbed these stairs to the alter at SAN MINIATO al MONTE BASILICO in Florence, Italy.

The etching behind us was an unfinished drawing by; I think MICHELANGLO.

Anyone out there know for certain? Please correct me if I am WRONG!

The stairs were too high for me to step up so we HIKED THE DRESS UP!

THAT WORKED THANKS TO DARYL ;THE MAN GIVING ME AWAY who was my boss at the time!

FUN FACT!I am now 50 pounds heavier and TWO INCHES SHORTER!!

This was not rehearsed, so the fact we all were lined up perfectly is a MIRACLE!

THE HYDRANGEAS KEEP ON GROWING here at my home.

They have never been so LARGE.

THAT MAKES TWO OF US!!

My plate of PASTRIES made by the cutie pie beside me!

HAVING FUN in THE SUN THESE TWO!

The lettuce and zucchini have been VERY BOUNTIFUL!

The beans are just coming into their own now for side dishes.

The zucchini has been ABUNDANT!

It is hard to get this photo, but the BUTTERFLY BUSH was SPECTACULAR this year!

We have hacked it back the last two years as there were hardly any blooms and it WORKED!

THANK YOU SHARI!

AN ENGLISH ROSE………..with a mild wonderful scent.

Tigre reaching out for my FOOT and holding on during TV TIME!

Tigre being THE MAN of the HOUR!

She can do anything to him and he takes it!

Absolutely beautiful to see how calm he is and happy.

TIGRE IS A PEOPLE PERSON!

HE is a very social CAT.

ONWARD TO MY HEALTH NEWS:

I have gotten some GOOD NEWS FINALLY.Both of my doctors are back in the office.

Lung doctor had me take the PULMONARY FUNCTION TEST AGAIN and it is much IMPROVED.

Cardiologist, saw me and had me take the 6 MINUTE WALKING TEST which I failed, but she blamed on her assistants who set it up as I was just fine.(OXYGEN DROPS)That will be happening again next week.My PVC’s in my heart beat have gone down so that is WONDERFUL NEWS.

It has been confirmed that I would not qualify for a HEART TRANSPLANT now by two cardiologists!!!

SO, that is OUT OF THE QUESTION.Seems my LUNGS would not make it through…………always a NEW REVELATION in MY JOURNEY of health issues!

I am happy about that as I really did not want to go through a procedure like that. Some of you may recall the Heart Valve Repair 16 years ago come September!I did not POP back to LIFE right after that. It took its toll on me.

SO, now the only option is the MEDICATIONS!!

They NEED TO WORK THEIR MAGIC FOR ME!

Which I have been on these last 3 years raising dosages as we go; as I get ALL THE SIDE EFFECTS they offer………..so it has been real SLOW GOING.I think I mentioned I am going to CARDIAC REHAB three times a week, which I do find enjoyable.I have been held back a few times now as my heart was showing WONKY ACTIVITY which makes all the bells and whistles GO OFF!

The EYE EPISODES made an appearance recently after a ONE YEAR absence!Which took TWO visits to the Cervical Spine DOC.I know why it came back; I rolled over on my side and went to sleep, which has been proven a BIG NO, NO for me!Hopefully,I can refrain from repeating that in the future! It happened when I was dead asleep!

COLONOSCOPY FINDINGS:THREE ADENOMAS which are “benign (noncancerous) tumors that originates in glandular or epithelial tissue, which lines organs and glands throughout the body.”I was also told I have a very curvy colon!Especially at the top so two of these BUGGERS were hard to get to but he did it!The DOC REMOVED and put a clip on the area, which the used clips will just disintegrate!!I GO BACK IN THREE YEARS.Last time I did this 3 years ago; I was told I had POLYP’S now I have graduated to ADENOMAS.

They can turn into CANCER I was told if left untreated.

THAT is your NEW WORD OF THE DAY ADENOMAS…………so if the heart and lungs don’t KILL ME I can count on the COLON doing the job!

(I HAVE TO LAUGH AT IT OTHERWISE I WILL ROLL UP IN A BALL AND JUST SCREAM.I mean NO DISRESPECT to any of you who have LOST LOVED ONES due to these sicknesses.)

FOOD WE HAVE EATEN THIS JULY CONSISTS of LETTUCE FROM OUR GARDEN AND ZUCCHINI and the FLOWERS TOO!To make these delicious Fritters you will need to slice zucchini rounds thin and put in bowl with salt so the water drains.Leave for 30 minutes.Put about half a cup of flour and Parmesan cheese in a bowl together.Add salt and pepper.Add one egg and some water to make a batter.I’m guessing about 1/4 of a cup.Rip up some basil and add to the mixtures. You do not want the mixture super liquid, more like a cake batter.Dump dried zucchini in batter and MIX then FRY.Use a tablespoon or bigger to make your FRITTERS.

This recipe was found on INSTAGRAM under the name ROCCOBUFFON.

He calls them FRITTELLE di ZUCCHINE.

DELICIOUS!

THOSE ITALIAN’s KNOW HOW TO EAT!BY THE WAY MY ITALIAN DID ALL THIS FOOD with the exception of MY SALAD!He did grow and pick the LETTUCE and wash it so he might as well have put it TOGETHER TOO!

Who can name this type of PASTA?

This is made with a scallion, Creme Fraiche and fresh tomatoes passed to a liquid, zucchini and some basil.Add parmesan to serve along with cut up zucchini flowers.

SEE BELOW!

Beautiful and Delicious.

Main course was SEA BREAM dressed with parsley, garlic, capers and anchovies sprinkled with olive oil.

These BEASTIES were set in foil individually and cooked at 325 degrees for about 30 minutes.

PESTO MAKING FOR THE YEAR………….we made LESS this year than in years past. One has to de-stem each and every leaf without getting the flower of the basil either. These two bowls took us over two hours.Closer to three hours then the process begins with the pine nuts and walnuts and olive oil. Then we POP the jars in the freezer!

That is all from me TODAY!Hope you all enjoy this MONTH as much as I plan too!I turn another year older which seems UNREAL!We watched a series on APPLE TV called SHRINKING which I LOVED once I got into it!Have you notice TV watching has gotten SO STUPID!LAST NIGHT we watched HUNTING HOUSEWIVES………….GOOD GOD THAT WAS AWFUL!I kept waiting for one of the HOUSEWIVES BOOB TO POP OUT!They had those straps so TAUNT on her shoulders you know they left marks!I have NEVER watched a HOUSEWIFE SHOW and if you watch this I think I know why now!

BE WELL.SOAK up the kids and the family this 4th of July and make sure your PETS are INDOORS!

I WISH YOU ALL A BEAUTIFUL SUMMER or WINTER WHEREVER YOU RESIDE!

Thanks for BEING HERE.

Hi Elizabeth, well, finally some good news related to your health. Or I should say better than expected. It’s always a joy to see your garden. It is so beautiful. The hydrangeas are gorgeous. I hope you are having a good summer.
We will be in the US in a months time. Plans are to visit Ephraim (Wisconsin). It’s on Lake Michigan and the are is supposed to be very beautiful. My husband usually makes the plan and I just go with them. To be honest, I’m not in the mood for this trip. But I’ll still try to make the most of it. Take care xxx

What a beautiful couple you were, and still are… Happy happy Anniversary!!

I love zucchini blossoms, especially stuffed w goat cheese and lightly sautéed. Delicious and lucky you – you have your own supply!

And in news you didn’t need to know, I also have a “twisted colon”…my doc had to be especially careful as to not accidentally perforate my colon during my colonoscopy. I now use ColoGuard and will hopefully stay healthy enough to avoid future colonoscopies. Sounds like your doctor is a pro and you are in good hands!

    Happy Summer Elizabeth…

Congrats on the good news and anniversary. Our birthdays are coming up!
I asked for home-made cinnamon rolls (with no icing) instead of a cake.
continue to delight and mama has been spayed. I’m happy to hear you can make zucchini blossoms with no egg. I don’t particularly like zucchini, and it’s too hot here right now to grow them, but I may try again just for flowers.

Have you ever grown Zuchetta rampicante or Trombocino squash. Those are delicious and, I think way more flavourful than zucchini and you can eat them as soft or hard.
    Have a happy July.

Florence Italy wedding with the most gorgeous dress. What a lifetime memory. Always love seeing the pictures. Cannot see the 50lbs must be water gain. Love this sweet picture of your sweets by granddaughter.
Garden is certainly giving up abundant bounty. Amazing what a garden tended can give us. Isn’t it. That English rose is just sheer perfection.
I am a side sleeper, I would be in big trouble. But hey if Jaclyn Smith can sleep on her back on three pillows… to avoid wrinkles. You can master no side sleeping for eye episodes. But gosh that would be hard to control turning over. Try that pillow trick. Now I know why you don’t wrinkle. No side sleeping.
I graduated from ADENOMAS to a small polyp. So I’m thinking with all those amazing vegetables and that chef in house. Three years from now. You will return to polyp or clear. Laughter is healing to us physically and mentally. Love your attitude. Always ultimately finding your joy as you navigate your health journey.
Pesto homemade. Worth the effort. Those that pesto together LOL.
I live in Florida. The beaches are full of pop outs. Front and back. I’m impressed they keep it on.
Happy summer back to you and continued health blessing.

When I had zucchini flowers it was in cooking class in Tuscany with gulianno Bugialli. They were so light I couldn’t stop eating them.Love seeing how happy your grand daughter is. Happy Anniversary. Happy Independence Day, Dear Elizabeth! Happy anniversary! I always love seeing your wedding photos, so elegant!

Advance Happy Birthday! But most of all, congratulations on the good health news – it’s about time. We must keep going. You inspire all of us with your amazing attitude.

I thought of you this week as I was picking tomatoes; I bet you make your own sauce. I’m taking care of a neighbor’s plants while they are away, and they said to pick anything I want from outside. They have basil plants growing like TREES, and this post inspires me to try my hand at pesto! What lovely gardens you have – that rose is spectacular. Mine are looking puny all of a sudden, could be due to the hideous heat. I, too, love hydrangeas. What would we do without flowers?

Your little princess is adorable and looks SO MUCH LIKE YOU. I know you are enjoying her. I’m happy that you get to spend time together.

I thought the dense shrubs and spruce tree hedge would prevent any balls from getting into my yard — boy was I wrong. Years ago I was worrying about whether space debris from Skylab would nail me. I lived in Montreal at the time. I was thinking about it and stepp[ed off the curb — not something you’d do in Montreal without looking! I was lucky but I stopped worrying about Skylab! I’m returning the latest golf ball with a card to ther grandparents!

It has been a hard year for gardening here — first late snow, then late frost, then drought, then high winds and then torrential downpour for a day. My peonies were just out in bloom when a heavy rain shattered the petals. Fortunately, the unopened buds are ok.

So I took even more pleasure in looking at the photos of your beautiful garden. And i always wanted to put zucchini blooms in batter but I have an egg allergy so need to figure out how to leave out the egg…,

First of all, happy anniversary! I’m so glad your lung and heart health has improved so much. An adenoma isn’t fatal as long as it doesn’t develop into a tumor, which takes about 10 years. Adenomas don’t spread or grow. So think positive. I love zucchini blossoms, if only for their beauty. They taste of almost nothing, but stuffed or fried, they’re delicious. I made stuffed ones yesterday, on toast. Oh my goodness, I could eat a mountain of them! I remember your pesto extravaganza from last year so well. The Italian team worked on it all day and then some. Do you still have any left? I made less pesto this year, otherwise, we’d have to eat pasta and pesto every day. I only became better acquainted with hydrogenas last year and kept them well-wrapped outside through the winter. Some are already in full bloom, others are only just beginning to develop their blossoms – long summer enjoyment! Dear Elizabeth, I wish you all a wonderful, healthy summer too. Europe is sweltering under unusually high temperatures of 40°C.

    Hi Elizabeth,
Happy 40th wedding anniversary to you both. What a gorgeous picture of your special day. Love the wall, great memories. Today is our wedding anniversary, 48 years. The years go by so fast. Where did they go???
The English rose is exquisite, just so feminine. Do you cut them or leave them for the garden to thrive?
The Italian knows how to take care of you. You are blessed that he enjoys cooking. So much love comes from his heart and soul.
Happy birthday to you this month. Do you try to give them away like I do?
No one wants my birthday, shucks! My wish for you is, maximum benefits and the least amount of side effects. You have the best attitude. It is what it is right? That is my attitude with my chronic no fun health issues. I always say, it could be worse.
Granddaughter is adorable, it looks like you both add so much to her life.
What did she make you? It sure is colorful.
What is the date of your birthday?

Thank you for the recipes! Went for my physical recently. I used to be 5’4″ during my adult life, but it seems slowly I’ve shrunk to 5′ 1/2″ OMG, that’s it! I’m not fat, I’m just too short.
I adore reading your blog, Elizabeth.

Lovely to hear from you!oh your garden is full of yummy things…especially those zucchini flowers…i am imagining their delicious taste and the pesto.
Good to stay on top of the adenomas…nip them in the bud. I had a lumpectomy years ago for an adenoma in my breast…huge relief when they biopsied it to discover it benign.
Your darling granddaughter is absolutely beautiful! She’s growing up fast! So wonderful to spend time together baking and making precious memories.
Enjoy the warm sunshine and your amazing roses :-))

    Take care Elizabeth,

Lovely photos – all of them. Thank you for talking about polyps and adenomas. I’ve had a number of colonoscopy and had things removed and waited on testing – nerve-wracking. But every time the surgeon has been in such a hurry that they’ve never clearly explained the difference between the two. I will have to see if I can find those reports. BC runs in the family. My last results were better and I attribute that to adding Linseeds/Flaxseed and Chia seeds to my breakfast cereal. Or, finally some luck – who knows. I brought a beautiful white Hydrangea in January and have it in a pot. But can’t seem to get the hang of how to look after it and it’s not thriving. I was a good Gardner with a healthy, happy garden. But now most of my plants are in pots my green fingers seem to have vacated. I don’t find in-pot gardening anywhere near as satisfying. Not wanting to jinks it, but the Rosemary, Ligularia and an old Iris (transplanted from an old garden) are doing OK. All the best to you and to your family.

What a lovely review especially on the fourth. It was good news to hear that some of your health issues are getting better. It’s such a bitch getting older. Your garden I’m envious of. I had to have some people come in and do an enormous cleanup in mine. With my spinal issues right now there’s no way I could do it all. The wedding pictures were wonderful. I still think you look great and love the red outfit or red and white with your granddaughter. Have a wonderful and safe holiday. Lily and I will be indoors since we’re in a major heat wave and it’s like impossible to breathe by midday outside. Horrible. Reading and relaxing in store. Hugs to you

Happy Anniversary and thank you for sharing your lovely photos. All the best for your health and please keep writing and telling us about you and your beautiful family! Ah, the pasta type you used I believe is called TROFIE, it’s a pasta that also goes perfectly with Genovese Pesto 🙂
