BALLERINA~MOM~BLOGGER

January 24, 2017 136 Comments

TIS I at AGE 15 in a SOLO dance at the MILL VALLEY WOMEN’S CLUB.

This was my last time to preform as I had to get on with REAL LIFE.

A LIFE where I could support MYSELF.

You see I wasNOT GOOD enough to be a PROFESSIONAL DANCER.

But Life is odd in the fact A REAL PRIMA BALLERINA ABSOLUTE entered my LIFE as a DEAR FRIEND

YEARS LATER.

I cherish that and her QUALITIES have been engraved in my memory ever since WE lost HER to CANCER.

I weighted about 115 pounds at the time……..

Stand about 5 foot 11 inches tall.

I can REMEMBER this as a PASSE and DEVLOPE.

I was HOLDING MY BREATH!

(FRENCH ladies did I spell that correctly?)

Villa CORA…………

THE ITALIAN and I on our wedding DAY 31 years ago!

IN FLORENCE, ITALY.

Do you think this AFFECTED WHO IAM TODAY!!!!!!!!!?

I DO ADORE BUSTS, BALUSTRADES and SHUTTERS!

MOTHERHOOD arrives on NOVEMBER 12th 1987.

This PHOTO had to be about a month later……….

This arrived about TWO YEARS LATER on OCTOBER FIRST 1989.

This was OUR CHRISTMAS CARD in 1990!

I am wearing ESCADA!

I worked in the COLLECTORS DEPARTMENT at NORDSTROM and we were privileged to receive clothing at COST.

I still recall my employee number!

48105-7

I still have this outfit TOO!

Can I slip into it?

THAT’S A NEGATIVE!

SO, why am I keeping it?

MEMORIES!

Life moves FORWARD and I close my ANTIQUE/VINTAGE shop and what do I do with the EXTRA CASH hanging out in a bank account?

I head to PARIS with MY TWO SONS.

WHY?

Because THE ITALIAN wouldn’t GO

AND

Because these TWO had NEVER BEEN!

AND

I Needed to meet CARLA COULSON!

The PHOTOGRAPHER behind these AMAZING PHOTOS!

YEP!

TIS I AGAIN in front of THE LOUVRE in PARIS in the TUILERIES GARDEN

feeding THE HENS.

AND That was about FOUR YEARS AGO………and HERE IAM TODAY!

FLOUNDERING on what it is I should BE DOING with MYSELF!

You see THE ITALIAN he LOVES TO WORK.

The BOYS are DONE with ME and doing their own THING.

SO, here I sit.

WITH my COW MUG

thinking how we can BUY some land and PLOP a COW, a few sheep and loads of chickens on it.

WHAT AM I SUPPOSE TO BE DOING?

THIS IS SO ME I couldNOT leave the shop window without taking a SNAP!

SOME people have been known to call me a QUEEN which I dislike.

A CONTESSA fits me just FINE.

NOT TOO HIGH UP

STILL playing with animals

and having a mighty fine time!

Not taking MYSELF too seriously!

SPEAKING OF QUEENS have you seen THE CROWN?

RUN

DON’T SKIP

RUN.

YOU will have SO much respect for HER even MORE THAN BEFORE!

INSTAGRAM is where I spend A good part of my day……..cruising the PHOTOS and liking and commenting!

IT HAPPENS TO BE MY THEATRE OF LIFE.

I feel as if WE are another LITTLE FAMILY of people who like the same things!

I was DRAWN by ANNE M BRAY who lives and works in LOS ANGELES.

HER BLOG is called

SPYGIRL-amb.blogspot.com

She took a photo I had posted and recreated THIS DRAWING ABOVE!

A TOTAL SURPRISE FOR ME!

THIS is WHAT I CALL FUN FUN FUN!!!

Just YESTERDAY this came through my PHONE……………

A WORK IN PROGRESS by the LOVELY KAREN PERSSON who hails from PALO ALTO , CALIFORNIA but lives in HOLLAND now and has for YEARS from what I have picked up on.

It is INTERESTING how MUCH you can learn from THE PHOTOS!

To see my instagram photos head to the HOME PAGE on this BLOG.

Take a meander down the LEFT SIDE BAR………….

BEWARE,

there are A LOT of SELFIES.

I did a STUDY…………BELIEVE IT OR NOT!

MY FOLLOWERS want to SEE ME and my ACCESSORIES……..MORE THAN MY CAT THEODORE with the EXCEPTION Of MADAME LIBODZA!!!!!!!!SHE caNOT get ENOUGH of THEODORABLE as SARAH C. named HIM many years ago!MY GARDEN, MY SONS PIG my TABLE SETTINGS ALL come in SECOND and THIRD to little OLD ME!

CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?

SO,I guess THAT is MY JOB for the moment.

CREATING MY kind of ART on a DAILY basis and tossing in a BIT of HUMOR to BOOT!!!!!!!

AS I spent the month of NOVEMBER cleaning OUT and organizing……..NO I did not TOSS MUCH OF ANYTHING!I ran across this book.DO YOU HAVE IT BY CHANCE……… this is the COVER of the BOOK which happens to be my BEDROOM years ago!

………….SAME FLOOR.

LOVE SEAT in the KITCHEN NOW with a brown velvet cover.

Floral love seat at foot of bed so WINSTON can ACCESS…………..MOLTO IMPORTANTE!!!!!!

BLUE DESK I SOLD at my SHOP………….SIGH……..

RED GARDEN VESSEL I SOLD back to SHOP; YEARS after owning…… to the GAL I purchased it from!

ALL the other STUFF I still have.

The room does not look like this anymore……….WOULD YOU BELIEVE A ROLLING RACK HAS TAKEN UP RESIDENCE IN MY BOUDOIR!!!I would like to MOVE IT OUT!!!!!!!!!!However, I do not see that happening in the NEAR FUTURE!

DO YOU HAVE THIS BOOK LINGERING In YOUR COOKBOOK COLLECTION?

I DO!

Only because FIFI O’NEILL and MARK LOHMAN

came to SHOOT MY HOUSE for a magazine one morning and stayed until DINNER.

From that DINNER we ended up in HER COOKBOOK!!!!!

I LEARNED HOW TO MAKE MASHED POTATOES FROM THIS BOOK!

I KNOW!

I couldNOT get them RIGHT because I was using a mixer!!

I NEEDED A MASHER and a few other DELECTABLES!

So,

this BOOK means A LOT to me!

A BASIC EVERYONE NEEDS in their FOOD REPERTOIRE.

BEFORE THAT I made the magazine WHERE WOMAN COOK!

I WAS BRAVE AND WORE VELVET.

Here IAM in MY GARDEN with THE PENNY ROYAL creeping about with MEIDILAND ROSES in white in my stone walls. The umbrella you see in the DISTANCE is the TWO STORY CHICKEN COOP.MY GARDEN is BUILT on a HILLSIDE.

The ITALIAN had VISION to TERRACE IT.

I had vision to make it a ROMANTIC ~ FRAGRANT Hillside.

STILL A WORK in PROGRESS as well.

But

Truth be told A GARDEN is NEVER DONE.

IS IT?

Here is a SAMPLING Of some of the FEEDBACK I receive……………it makes me SMILE!

WHAT MEMORIES DO you CHERISH?

ARE YOU STILL MAKING A FEW?

If you have a few minutes can you leave me a COMMENT in the comment section and tell me what YOU would like me to SHARE with YOU?

As you can see I am FLOUNDERING in that AREA as well.

I NEED YOUR HELP!

Otherwise, I might bore you with MORE PHOTOS of ME as THE KING MOUSE in a ballet PRODUCTION in the 1970’s.

SEE BELOW!

You are exactly where you are suppose to be right now and doing what you are suppose to be doing. Be patient, the best is yet to come! You provide so much entertainment and eye candy for us all. Thank you thank you thank you!
Also, do you remember when you were really young and you didn’t know what you were suppose to be doing? It happens at every age I think— just know you are not alone. Hugs, kisses and thank yous.

      THAT is JUST IT!
I DID KNOW WHAT I WANTED TO BE AT A VERY YOUNG AGE……………I HAD DIRECTION.
I wanted to be a VET…….too much SCIENCE!
I wanted to be a BUYER in FASHION well I worked for MARIA and feel I DID THAT but on the OTHERSIDE.Once again Loads of MATH……..YUCK!BUT I DID IT!
I wanted to LIVE in EUROPE!Check DID THAT although it was under SAD circumstances.
I wanted to MARRY A EUROPEAN………………I CONQUERED THAT without even TRYING!
I wanted a FARM.WELL,NO FARM yet but I have had my share of ANIMALS.
I HAVE WANTED TO DRESS like the OLDER woman in MAGAZINES since my youth…….I always LOVED the stories at the end of VOQUE or HARPERS that had an essay on PEOPLE and their HOMES and FAMILY.I would have LOVED to work for a MAGAZINE company in my younger days and OF COURSE a BALLET DANCER was the FIRST DREAM that did not come to FRUITION.
Not to be forgotten is the FAMILY………..with the BOYS friends popping in and out THAT was a DREAM before it became a REALITY.
IN CONCLUSION……….I think I GOT what I wanted and have touched on the things that were on my LIST!SO, APRIL THANK YOU for this comment as it made me THINK about what I wanted as a CHILD………TRA..LA!!!

I love that you don’t take yourself too seriously – and that you find joy in simple things like your garden, pets and antique treasures. I completely understand what you mean about wondering what you should be doing with yourself at this point in your life. I am at the same point in my life and I sometimes wonder the same thing. Follow your heart and you can’t go wrong. And you can adjust your sails as often as the wind changes direction.

Thank you for sharing these sweet and beautiful pictures and thoughts, so I could read them at 3 a.m., when I can’t sleep:) Oh, the floundering…it is a difficult thing at this time of life, when the kids are grown. But you even do floundering well, though:) Maybe you should get into jewelry design, where perhaps a portion of the profit could go to a charity of your choice? And I would love to hear more about your house decor, what you like to cook/eat, and never tire of pictures of you in your accessories:)

Floundering? That seems the wrong word. You consistently entertain thousands of readers with your self-deprecating charm, your exquisite taste, and your fascinating talent for pulling everyone and everything into your orbit. Maybe you mean to ask “what else.” And the answer is probably smack dab in front of you. Maybe you are already doing it. Don’t mean to write such an enigmatic comment, so if ever you want to talk, I love this topic.

Dear Contessa: I changed my life at 62 last year and opened a jewelry boutique in an existing fabulous gift shop in Atlanta. It is never too late to do what your heart’s desire is. Having designed fine jewelry necklaces and earrings for 32 years, I have added Previously Enjoyed Estate Fine Jewelry to my collections. Now I am learning about that and learning about websites (under construction) and blogs. Please continue to entertain us with your fabulous blog!!!!

I feel like I have opened a treasure box full of jewels. Every piece sparkles and shimmers begging me to study it. I pick one up and my eyes grow wide…and then I see another. That is what it felt like reading this incredible post. First, the lithe ballerina with arching arms, curved back and come-hither eyes. Yes…you DO look like Ali McGraw during her “Love Story” days. Then, the young mother with an infant…glowing and wrapped in the cocoon of wonder and creation. We watch as you open and close your shop, are featured in books and magazines. You sweep across continents and through books with majesty and grace. The lithe arching arms and soulful eyes have beem made more beautiful by a beauty filled life. Needless to say, I am in awe. Outside of standing in front of Parisian monuments…I have done none of these things. I enjoyed this gander through the life of a woman with style and substance….burnished bright by romance and love. I have been left enriched and joyful that such people are real and reach out and pull us in. Gorgeous post… What would I like???…Perhaps, a tour of your terrace, a view of your home…and more posts like this!

I recall that… my Mother (your Auntie Rosella) our Aunt Katherine and my Aunt “B” (Your Mother) were ALL so proud and “bragged” to everyone who would listen when you WERE a dancing Ballerina!
And many thanks for… after visiting your home a few years ago that it IS alright to embrace my own Clutter in my home! As our Aunt Katherine said to my Mother one time when she was criticizing the clutter in her amazing Montecito home… “well Rosella… it’s COLLECTED CLUTTER) and as you and I know… what an understatement THAT was!

    WooHoo…your LIFE !!!
I think you have had a divine time here on planet Earth!
OK, now I know you’re TALL. TALLER than me, and that’s a good thing. The main reason you can wear all those wonderful clothes. And, about the clothes: I have beautiful things hanging which I know I’ll probably (PROBABLY) NEVER wear again, but they are so splendid I can’t get rid of them in any fashion (re-sale, charity shop, etc.); I love seeing them and I always remember where I wore them and how much fun I had, sometimes I even remember the conversations of that evening. I just did a post on Chanel’s Haute Couture, which you commented on, where I expounded on the unique appeal of DRESSING UP. I know YOU know what I mean !! i now have 5 little grandchildren, from 8 years to 1.5 years, and even though my adult children are doing very well, those little kids love their MiMi (me), I even speak to them with the same words I used with my kids & it’s just so much fun to live their fantasies with them, as we probably did not with our own kids. You know I LOVE LOVE LOVE you. We have the same opinions on ALMOST everything and if I were able to buy more property and get animals , chickens, roosters, etc. I would be even happier. I’ve discovered that whenever I SEE an animal I smile. That’s a really great feeling, isn’t it.

Personal stories, don’t change a thing, I just love reading every post, you always make me smile. Sometimes I nod to myself in agreement, others I laugh out loud; your blog is truly refreshing and I love it. Your ballerina days look so graceful, a poise that I can see you have carried with you always. As for memories, every day I like to think we are making memories, some are good, some are bad, but hopefully we’ll come to laugh at the bad and sigh happily as we remember the good!

Do most young girls yearn to be a ballerina? My first tutu was blue. Of course, I always wanted a flamenco dancer’s layered skirt, yellow with black trim. And then, a cowgirls’s outfit with those adorable sheepskin chaps. All those memories, all those long years ago. Feeling nostalgic this early morning. Those are happy memories. Worried about the memories being created now. So very disturbed by the actions of Trump. Well, this blog has cheered me up a bit. Absolutely adore your Coulson (sp?) shoot in Paris..

You are a bon vivant, an effervescent angel reminding us all to enjoy life. You aren’t hawking the latest “must-haves.” In fact, while your style is maximalism (not less is more but more is more), your kind of “more” usually involves flowers or jewelry and clothes/fine robes you already have. You make the most of things. Which is a good lesson for us all.
I agree that you would be a hit on TV; as far as your voice goes, I’m tired of all the women who sound like men or like chain smokers. I agree with your assessment of crowd-pleasers: lots of you, your home/garden/wardrobe, your witty observations, your family….I’ll take it all.

I’ve just been pouring over garden catalogs. The problem is so many plants are desirable as I plan a new “scree” alpine flowerbed on a sunny, drought-prone, gently sloping boulevard. I am so glad I did not put real rock garden rocks on the boulevard as 2 people cross-country skied over it recently and they would have have been injured.

Instead, I used a charcoal coloured small gravel (rock chips that interlock) as the “scree” and as a mulch. I had intended to not plant more this spring and simply let the plants from last fall grow but since I found so many, well, I’m sinking fast. Spring gentians, moss phlox, a ground hugging rose, alpine thyme, and the list continues indefinitely. And for the shadier areas a few treats, too, and a David Austen rose called Strawberry Hill that I must have. A great way to spend time when not feeling well. By the time I was finished, I had 50 plants on the list… The young single mum who does my gardening (since I can’t due to illness) is not going to believe it…

Then I discovered someone in the city has found old apricot trees and he will give me scion wood for grafting on my plum trees. I will still have apricots which don’t usually survive here!
What I would like you to know is that I love your blog –– how I wish I’d met you earlier. I love your distinctive clothes, jewellery, interior design. I have been looking at the antique tables here and wondering if the Wedgwood blue painted end-wall should be repainted. You define style for me!
I also love reading about THE Italian. And I adore your garden! (I wish Meidiland roses survived here!).

What do I remember as a child? I remember being keen on ballet, as a 6 year old, with a Russian ballet teacher who had been a prima ballerina in Europe. I found a program recently from years ago where I was a lowly snowflake in Swan Lake. My neighbour down the street was in the program too and she loved borrowing the program. Alas, I did not have the body to be a ballerina and no-one spared my youthful feelings on the matter! Sadly! Our teacher had a hip flask which she needed while teaching us and when she wanted to motivate us she would lift her skirts and flash a bright pink old fashioned girdle! Perhaps that is what teaching us had led her to…after her pre-war ballerina career and the wartime death of her count husband. I loved seeing your ballerina photos!

    You are meant to blog!
