BOUNTIFUL DAISY’S

June 11, 2020 113 Comments

A little STORY about little DAISIES in my GARDEN!

ONCE UPON A TIME A GIRL named Elizabeth had the chance to plant and create a quarter of an acre.

She actually was so depressed by the backyard that came with the house she was almost in tears!

The backyard was full of PINE TREES and vinca and poison oak.

The land dropped off after a small deck.

Bottom line it was DARK and UNUSABLE!

CONTESSA SPOKE HER MIND,”I HATE PINE TREES AND DARK GARDENS!”

ITALIAN’s RESPONSE:THE BOYS AND DOGS WILL LOVE IT!

ALWAYS THE POSITIVE ONE THAT ITALIAN!

NEVER MIND I TOLD THE REAL ESTATE AGENT NOT TO SHOW HIM THIS HOUSE AFTER I HAD LEFT the country to go back to ITALY.

My job in 1994 was to find a HOUSE to buy in TEN DAYS.

I HAPPEN TO KNOW THAT REAL ESTATE AGENT IS READING THIS!

What did she do SHOW HIM OUR HOUSE TODAY!

WHY?

IT WAS THE CHEAPEST ONE ON THE MARKET!

SO,

THE ITALIAN came up with the plan!

To terrace it.

To create More usable space.

So, that is what we did!

Concrete planter pavers were stacked one on top of the other and filled with dirt.

HERE I STAND ON TERRACE TWO!

(Wall behind me of green is concrete blocks)

The middle school in town was building a NEW GYM.

I told the truck driver to follow me home !

It was a short drive and cost zero money to DUMP!

I called THE ITALIAN thrilled with my cleverness.

He tells me there is NO WAY AN EIGHTEEN WHEELER CAN TURN TO DUMP IN OUR DRIVEWAY!

I TELL HIM THE MAN IS DOING IT NOW!

HE IS BRILLIANT!

HE HAS THE TRUCK JACK KNIFED.

(bent at an angle).

We had wonderful neighbors they all came to shovel a bit on the weekend!

THREE terraces and 26 years later

CONTESSA is NOT in TEARS ANYMORE!

Those slate stepping stones were put in this SPRING.

As we had grass for years but our pet GEESE ate it and then the PENNYROYAL that I planted from a 6-pack off our master bedroom took FLIGHT and self seeded way down there!IT was FABULOUS but it gave a PURPLE flower come summer……..that bothered me as my garden was ONLY yellow and white flowers.I HAD made my decision after reading THAT TWO COLORS GIVE MORE IMPACT.

WHAT IS THIS DAISY?

YELLOW AND WHITE!!!!!!!!!!!!

YOU KNOW ME I WANTED A FLOWER STAGE!

BUT I LEFT IT ALONE!THE SMELL WAS INTOXICATING AND THE FLOWER WAS VERY SHORT LIVED!

Weeds arrived and other assorted growth so it was not what one would call PRETTY.

IN the winter it became muddy.

SO,THE ITALIAN WENT TO WORK AGAIN.

STONES IN PLACE AND WE PLANTED MORE PENNYROYAL.

BANKSY LIKES PENNYROYAL HE EATS IT……..SO WE PLANTED MORE!

AND PRAYED!

AS SPRING ARRIVED AND WE WERE HUNKERED DOWN FOR COVID-19 for months a green plant started to GROW.

THE ITALIAN wanted to chop it back………..I SAID NO!

TO ME WEED OR FLOWER THE GREEN WAS BETTER THAN THE DIRT!

THEN I REALIZED WHAT IT WAS………..

Daisies symbolize innocence and purity.

This stems from an old Celtic legend. … Freya is the goddess of love, beauty, and fertility, and as such the daisy came by symbolize childbirth, motherhood, and new beginnings. Daisies are sometimes given to congratulate new mothers.

(WELL, I AM A NEW GRANNY!)

THE TYPE OF DAISY THAT HAS APPEARED IN MY GARDEN IS GERMAN CHAMOMILE.

Chamomile is the common name used for several species, but German chamomile (Matricaria recutita) is the one with tiny white daisy-like blooms on spindly stems.

As the LITTLE CONTESSA in training taught me they can become EARRINGS!

YOU GRANDMOTHER’s out there can have fun teaching and sharing this NEW TRICK to YOURS!

Tip: Cut the stem long and turn like your screwing a nail to get it in your ear!

EVEN THE ITALIAN WAS HAPPY!

LOOK HOW TALL IT GREW!

THEN THE STAR JASMINE BLOOMED!

BOTH OF THESE IN THE SAME WEEK!

I AM LIKE A LITTLE KID IN A CANDY SHOP!

MEANWHILE back in the KITCHEN we were having a nightly visitor!

BANANAS are kept on the kitchen table for MR. BANKSY’s daily breakfast.

A Banana was eaten three nights in a row………skin pulled off and discarded on the table.

NO POOPS like a MOUSE would leave behind!

SO I MADE A TRAP………..CORNMEAL.

TRA LA…………we have tracks!

THE ITALIAN thought it was a BIRD as there was no trail of POOP.

I was more inclined to think it was a little Mouse as THAT CAT loves to bring them and show me!

When HE is not resting up after a NIGHT of HUNTING!

PLEASE PLAY DETECTIVE…….what is your OPINION?

BIRD or RODENT?

Could this adorable ORANGE CAT have caught a little varmint and left him to his own devises running around MY HOUSE?

SUN BATHING through the SKYLIGHT!

MEANWHILE BACK INTO THE DAISIES I GO while you contemplate!

I may NEVER come OUT!

JASMINE and Abutilon meet THE SPANISH STEPS!

BELOW WATCH BANKSY THE TEA CUP PIG WALTZ THROUGH THE DAISIES!

51 seconds of video

THERE IS YOUR ANSWER!

A VERY SMALL Minnie Mouse?

THAT tail goes on FOREVER!

Does that mean it’s a RAT?

LAST TWO NIGHTS HE HAS BEEN A NO SHOW!

GUESS WHAT…………HE IS BACK!

HE NEEDS A NAME?

LONG TAIL

SUPER SLEUTH

LORD MOUSE

PLEASE ADD TO THE LIST………….XX

CONTESSA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! OK first of all, when I try to get to your blog from my blog roll, the link takes me to a completely different page, not here! So I have to search on Google for you!

I just saw you came to my blog. Your visit led me to search for you and HERE YOU ARE, amongst the daisies! I tell you, these flowers are stealing my heart. I planted Shasta Daisies in my quadrants out back but they did not make it. I think I will end up putting peonies there, which is not a bad thing but where OH where can I plant myself some daisies! Look at how they appeared for you! And these are the German chamomile type, which is what I love. I got so excited the other day when I was able to purchase two bouquets of chamomile at my local podunc market! LOL

You are fabulous as always, living the life I love of flowers, pigs, chickens and style. Hugs to you!

I am not afraid of snakes but I can’t stand mice. Those daisies are gorgeous. You must have your plants on overhead sprayers? We don’t get any volunteers as everything is dripped in our yard. This post is filled with such beauty and whimsy, and the very real feeling of a fairy tale-come-true… with Cinderella (post-slipper fitting) presiding, along with her handsome prince.

I know I am not alone in feeling swept away into a special world… where a handsome pig dances down the lane, an orange cat reclines on a velvet chaise with leopard pillows, and a royal corgi is at his post… and where daisies grow as tall as Jack’s beanstalk. And, of late, when one of Cinderella’s mice returns in the dark of night to pay a visit to a now grown up Contessa.

Speaking of the new visitor…we lived in a (somewhat) converted ice house on an estate in CT when we were first married (and could see the outside through some of the barnwood walls). Heat was primarily from a giant wood burning stove. We slept in an open loft, and above our heads where we slept was the half wall that ran across the loft.. where we quickly came to realize the mice would scamper back and forth during the night. There was no way to remove them– this had been their home for too long (and there was no way to mouse-proof this abode), as this short story will attest. One day I went to a very old chest of drawers where I had put a bag of peanuts in the shell. They were all gone. Not a bit is shell in sight, just the chewed empty plastic bag. It was a MYSTERY until the day when I went to our closet (under the stairwell like Harry Potter) looking for my yellow rain slicker with hood…and there was the peanut stash, still a good amount left along with empty shells. They had to have moved them one at a time from inside the chest and across the floor, then under the closet door and up on the closet rod and then into the raincoat hood. Needless to say, I grabbed an umbrella and left their private pantry untouched… I did not name them, but I would vote for Daisy for yours, and for her to be safely relocated to the far reaches of your secret garden : ) XOXO

How considerate that the little Banana Muncher did not leave a calling card!! Perhaps best not to name it if you intend on setting a trap. Clearly THEO would rather lounge on the velvet chaise than
chase this visitor. The little flowers of the Chamomile are so pretty- MAGICAL really……:)

I shall never tire of photos of your lush gardens! The Italian has good landscaping ideas PLUS obviously he is a hard-worker because he implemented his ideas and he continues to maintain and improve your terraced gardens.

I was told that mice and rats carry harmful DISEASES – and to wear disposable GLOVES if you touch or catch one, touch a mouse trap you used, touch their poop, or you touch anything that they touched. You do NOT want a mouse in your KITCHEN, especially on your kitchen TABLE. Although I’ve never seen a mouse there, I always have two mouse traps in my basement (peanut butter bait), and I catch mice all year round!

Since Oakland lost its football team to Las Vegas, perhaps the Raider Rat is appropriate! The Midnight Munching Mouse, Bananarama Rat, or Long Tail Sleuther. Those little critters have good sniffers. They know where to go! How does Banksy feel about sharing his breakfast?
Your garden is lovely and the unusual steep slopes Ultimately gave you The paradise it is today. BTW-my mother’s favorite flower is a DAISY.

Hello Contessa, Daisies grow all over in Ohio; a very welcome flower. Some years we get solid stands of them in the fields. My grandmother loved daisies and collected a type of antique Limoges china, pale green and patterned with daisies, so seeing daisies always reminds me of her.

CONTESSA your garden is exquisite – bees – butterflies – hummingbirds must be frequent visitors. The fragrances must be intoxicating.

The Italian did a fab job of designing the terraces!

Do you ever make tea from the chamomile?

Oh dear the mouse – Short Ears – needs to be on high alert or the cat will get him.

It’s always a pleasure to view your garden – one feels like Alice in Wonderland – being taken on a journey of wonderment!
