CONTESSA UPDATE AND HER GARDEN!

May 13, 2019 183 Comments

HELLO!

I ‘m LOOKING TIRED and OLD HERE.

The lines in MY FACE are coming FAST and FURIOUS!

This photo was taken on a TUESDAY.

ON SUNDAY I experienced something I wish on NO ONE!

MY right arm started tightening up and it went into my neck and shoulder.

I couldn’t sleep due to the pain lying down!

When I got up and went to the living room the pain was shooting to both shoulders and down my SPINE!

I WAS A MESS!

YES we called THE ADVISE NURSE and she thought it was a pulled muscle…….

WRONG SIDE FOR A HEART ATTACK!

BUT I still thought that was happening as there was pressure in my RIGHT CHEST!

Doctor followed up in the AM and thank goodness most of the pain from the night before was GONE!

She however, wanted me to be seen!Which I appreciate and understand!

CAN I GIVE YOU A RUN DOWN OF HOW THAT WENT?

THE DOCTOR WHO RANG in the AM, SAID TO CALL THE ADVISE NURSE BACK AND GET AN APPOINTMENT for TODAY!

SHE WANTED ME TO BE SEEN.

(WOMEN AND HEART ATTACKS ARE STRANGE VERY DIFFERENT CLUES than MEN!)

THAT was WRONG INFORMATION according to ADVISE NURSE CENTRAL!

SO, I ring MY DOCTOR who is OUT on Maternity Leave but that’s okay someone will be covering and MAYBE I will LIKE THEM BETTER!I was told there are NO APPOINTMENTS for TWO WEEKS. Of course, driving after taking Ativan is not worth it since the reaction is much slower, as well as brain activity. It is not necessary to take the drug without serious indications at http://hesca.net/ativan/ . There is nothing useful in taking psychotropic drugs. If recovery is possible without taking such serious drugs, it is not advised to start taking them. It can also cause addiction. I let her know I may be suffering from a HEART ATTACK or STROKE( lets put some FIRE UNDER HER SEAT!)Which resulted in saying ,”OH YOU HAVE A CARDIOLOGIST?”YES, I SAY”.She says

“CALL HIM!”

IN doing so I hit the wrong button which was for appointments on The phone……You know push 1 for SALES push TWO for whatever……..well I PUSHED THREE!I explain what happened the night before and I would like to see MY HEART DOCTOR or someone in his office………

THIS IS WHAT SHE SAID TO ME.”WHY ARE YOU CALLING HERE?”

I then called CARDIOLOGY and HIT THE CORRECT NUMBER ON THE PHONE and LEFT A MESSAGE.

I heard back in ONE HOUR.

WHICH IS GREAT I THINK!

The lady was VERY Nice and said she had received my message and sent it to MY doctor which HE responded with I should GO TO EMERGENCY!

Needless to say I did not GO to EMERGENCY because the last time I was told to do that by a PHONE MD the EMERGENCY ROOM DOCTOR asked “WHAT AM I DOING THERE?”!!!After telling me I have a LEFT BUNDLE BRANCH over MY HEART and I could have had a small Heart Attack!!

I KID YOU NOT!

IT’s been a week since this ORDEAL happened and I am FINE.

I’m sharing this as I think it is IMPORTANT TO SEE WHAT IS GOING ON IN THE MEDICAL INDUSTRY.

MOST PEOPLE WHO ANSWER THE PHONE DO NOT GIVE A HOOT!

Nor, are they over 50!

I remember a time when they told YOU to call NO MATTER WHAT!

BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY!

I wonder if this GENERATION has even heard of that saying!

LETS HEAD TO THE GARDEN AND CLEAR OUR HEADS SHALL WE?

SO NOW

IT’s GARDEN TIME!

IT was time to take advantage of the good weather and put myself to bed in my FRENCH DAY BED in the GARDEN.

Veranda magazine arrived and away I went.

I WAS SO HAPPY looking around and up and seeing roses peeking through the shelter I have created with the ITALIAN JASMINE.

I didNOT feel guilty at all.

I’m at that AGE where we MUST START ENJOYING THE LITTLE THINGS and NOT worry about what needs to GET DONE!

LIKE LAUNDRY!

I’m Moving at a MUCH SLOWER PACE THESE DAYS!

THE GOOD NEWS IS I am NOT Taking a NAP A DAY ANYMORE!

SOMETHING has changed there!

BY the way THOSE BRILLIANT DOCTORS I HAVE; SAY I doNOT have POTS.

(THEY DID MORE TESTING!)

I’m pretty sure I DO after everything I have READ but LETS PRETEND THEY ARE RIGHT!

I am doing BETTER and THAT’S WHAT COUNTS!

COULD BE BECAUSE MY DEAR FRIEND IN ITALY TOLD ME TO DRINK TWO BIG GLASSES OF WATER BEFORE DOING ANYTHING EACH DAY!

AT THE SINK!

SO, I drink 24 ounces of WATER before my coffee.

WITH A STRAW!

A METAL STRAW THE ITALIAN MADE!

Goes down better!

I HAVE NEVER BEEN A WATER DRINKER!

BUT NOW I AM.

Lets head out to THE GARDEN as it is ALMOST BURSTING!

MAY 2019

A VIEW from my bedroom.

That is MISTER BANKSY’s FOOD BOWL center stage.

YOU see I put it inside another bowl as he likes to TIP it first than EAT!

He passes ALL the GOOD vegetables and heads straight for the PIGGY PELLETS!

Garden area off my MASTER BEDROOM.

I would like to rip it all out and start over here with gravel and a CHAISE LOUNGE!

That HOUSE over YONDER took out a few BIG TREES and NOW I see them and they SEE ME!

Wonder who got the better DEAL?!!

Garden Path on the Third Terrace that was put in this SPRING!

ALL the green is weeds and some newly planted PENNY ROYAL.

Those ROSES BUSHES are called BOLERO VERY FRAGRANT!

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THEM!

DO NOTE

the THREE LITTLE PIGGY’s pink, yellow and orange that one of my READERS SENT TO ME for YEAR of THE PIG!

ALL THE WAY FROM TAWAIN!

I ADORE THEM JIM THANK YOU!

A FEW ROSES I ALLOWED MYSELF TO PLUCK!

SNOWBALL TREE NOT LOOKING SO BEAUTIFUL THIS YEAR we lost part of it evidently!

STAIRCASE TO THE CREEK AREA………

Yes, those are tall WEEDS to THE RIGHT!

I’ll get THERE!

PEACE ROSE DOING HER THING!

SHE IS OLD!

MOTHER’S DAY!

ME and PEACE having a little CHAT!

GARDEN TOUR DAY NO SUN…….I got to tour other GLORIOUS GARDENS in MY AREA!

OUTFIT BY Bryn Walker a floral design.

This is from this seasons collection and is in HEAVY LINEN.

I CANNOT TELL YOU HOW MANY TIMES I WAS STOPPED FOR THE OUTFIT!

I DIDNOT WEAR THE HAT as it was NOT NEEDED!

GET TO THE SHOP OR ON LINE ASAP!

THEY ARE IN STOCK!

PAGE TWO!

Second Terrace with PILLOW FIGHT ROSE TREES!

The GREEN is JASMINE and will start to bloom in the coming month!

BANKSIA ROSE CASCADING over the SWING!

WITH SUNLIGHT DANCING THROUGH!

BOLERO.

BOWING TO MISTER BANKSY AS HE WALKS BY TO HIGH UP TO EAT!

” WHO ME EAT THY ROSES? “

I GET A SPANKING IF I DO THAT!

I KNOW BETTER NOW…… NOT TO EAT NONNA’s ROSES!

YES, the scarf came from Bryn Walker TOO but that I purchased on a DIFFERENT DAY!

ONE DAY, I HOPE I’m STILL AROUND, THAT ARBOR THE ITALIAN MADE AT MY REQUEST WILL BE COVERED IN ROSES!

One NEEDS an ARBOR FULL of ROSES to GO TO THE CHICKEN COOP

DON’T YOU THINK?

IT’s a WIN WIN SITUATION!

FRESH EGGS AND ROSES!

THE HAT happen to match PERFECTLY!

WHAT ARE THE CHANCES?

HOPE YOU ENJOYED THE GARDEN TOUR!

I’ll try and do another one maybe with a little video…………

THIS garden is about 25 years old…………I knew NOTHING of what I was doing!

I read A LOT of MAGAZINES and turn corners of pages down!

I BOUGHT PLANTS THAT SPOKE TO ME!

I have enjoyed the process VERY MUCH and THANK my ITALIAN for HAVING THE VISION!

IT was HE who had the idea to terrace the back………MY JOB was to find the dirt to do that!

I had NO problem going up to dumptrucks saying follow me I’m down the road!

No NEED to go to the DUMP AND PAY!

I had 18 WHEELERS FOLLOWING ME!!!!!!

TO the HORROR of THE ITALIAN!

Only because they would not fit!

MIRACLES DO HAPPEN WHEN YOUR WANT IS MORE THAN YOUR NEED!

PLEASE LEAVE ME A COMMENT AND ASK ANY QUESTIONS YOU NEED TO KNOW!

I ANSWER ALL QUESTIONS AND ENJOY HEARING FROM YOU!

IT MAKES IT ALL WORTHWHILE!

THE BLOG CONTINUES IN THE COMMENT SECTION WHICH CAN BE QUITE FUN TOO!

DO YOU READ THE COMMENTS?

I REVEAL MORE INFORMATION.

ENJOY THE SEASON!

Contessa, I am very worried about this scare. You may have had a giant muscle spasm from the gardening.. that has happened before to me, but I don’t like how they blew you off at the doctor!! That is just wrong. Next time you should try the emergency if you worry.. You’ll at least be where they can help if it’s worse. The garden is magical and you look gorgeous in the Bryn Walker. I love those long coats on you. Your so tall and they look amazing- scarf too. Relax and enjoy the garden this week – we are getting rain I heard though. Kisses to Banksy. I will have to call you and check up on you. xoxo Kim

Oh Elizabeth! You are gorgeous in your garden. I so enjoyed my stroll. Your 25 years have made it your piece of heaven on earth. You and the Italian are just divine.

Now to our medicine today. YOU ARE SO RIGHT! I went for my annual appt with a specialist on Friday. I got there 15 minutes early, as instructed by the office. Half hour after my scheduled time I asked if there was a situation I should be aware of (emergency or such) NO I was told. There are two people ahead of you. Another half hour passed, I asked again. NO two people ahead of you. (I see a rep come in with coffee and treats….hmmmm), after an hour and a half I got up and asked for a final time. No she said, you guessed it, there are two people ahead of you. I caught a glimpse of the line for blood work (twenty in line at least), and I said I have been waiting an hour and a half, at this rate I will be here all day. I am cancelling my appointment. She said she noted it was the long wait in my notes. I was asked to reschedule, I said no thank you. I will look for another practice. I was so mad. How dare they treat us like this? This is not care. This is abuse!!! I have to say as I drove away I felt proud of myself for not taking it. But now, oh now to find another practice that is better. Sending you all the get well wishes possible. Enjoy that garden and your life. You inspire us all. You my dear friend are one of a kind. We NEED you!
    XOXO,
    Kimberly

The girls at the receptionists were ALL around 24-27 I’m guessing. They had 4 receptionists, three check out. This is like a car factory!

        Hope you are feeling better.

Dear kind clever Contessa! Cannot believe the B***shit you are dealing with vis a vis doctors. I live in France, and if I have a problem I just show up somewhere and it is handled. The American health care system is such a total mess, the more I hear about it the more upset I become. Friends were here recently, he pays $1400 per month for a Kaiser plan, and still has to pay something for various things. I pay nothing and have a co-pay of $5 per visit at most. I am treated with respect by a doctor I know, I don’t have to call the whatever nurse person and tell them my story. I am so sorry that you are going through this, it should not happen. Try to continue your positive attitude, and take photos of Banksy whenever possible. You are amazing.

Dear Elizabeth, What you experienced sounds very frightening. I wish I could say that I’ve had better luck dealing with the medical community, but I’ve had some scary situations as well. One that I feel landed me in the hospital, about a year and a half ago. I’ll be 74 next month and I feel tired all the time. So much so, that I’ve given up thrifting. It’s time for me to pare down and not add to my things. Well, this was a cheery comment. Sorry! I love your posts and that garden is wonderful. Take care beautiful lady.

I simply cannot believe this post !!! So many beautiful photos of you, Banksy and that lovely flowing green expansive garden. Just brilliant. Now, about the health/pains, etc. Get thee to the Urgent Care next time this happens. Here in Houston, I’ve taken friends many many times, the doctors are awesome, because they are YOUNG and eager to help you. They can do full diagnosis, tests, etc, and if hospitalization is required they have you transported. I’ve been so impressed. Also, there is this concierge doctor association called MD VIP, once you sign on with a doctor who is a member, they return your call within 30 minutes 24/7, you can see one of their members anywhere in the USA. I highly recommend this, it is so worth the fee they charge. I’m older than you, but at some point in all of our lives we need “work” done. I didn’t hesitate. Once I looked in the mirror at the hair salon, with that cape thing around my neck, and almost screamed to see MY neck looking so badly. I had a full lift, nose, under eyes; I looked like I had been in a battle for a few days, but wore scarves tied around my head to cover the damage, and everyone thought I had been on a little vacay because I looked “rested.” So happy I did that. I still have no wrinkles to speak of, but around the mouth I’m sagging, my mother had the same thing, but now that I’m a widow I don’t know if I’ll do anything else. I’m even thinking of letting my own hair grow out just to see WHAT color it is, as I haven’t seen it since I was 18!! Please take care of yourself, like you take care of everything else. You are a prize in this ordinary, boring world full of uninteresting, uninspired, uncreative people. A PRIZE !!!

SO glad your beautiful garden can provide a respite from your recent health scare!! It’s so nice to think of you actually relaxing with a magazine and a coffee in the garden. I know that most of the time you are probably working and weeding, and caring for animals, etc. etc. I seem to remember that you are only 57, which is hardly elderly. “60 is the new 30!!” All this reference to “at my age” and “I’m at an age when” seem premature!! Of course, if you’re not feeling well, that certainly brings on the fears. And your experience with getting care from your doctors is truly eye opening. It’s shocking. I’m not sure what your next step should be….. keep switching doctors until you find one who you feel comfortable with? While not the most convenient, maybe come on over to Kaiser SF where we seem to have more caring docs! Were you ever seen with this past heart attack scare? I couldn’t tell from your post. But I hope so!! By the way, you look absolutely beautiful in the pics!

OMG! So sorry for the medical debacle! I get so angry about our medical and insurance situation here in the US! Very glad you are feeling better! YES water does wonders…Steve and I learned years ago from a functional ND to drink half your weight in ounces of water every day! Everything in the body is improved by this simple behavior. (It does seem like a lot at first but get used to it). I always bring a water bottle in the car and drink it on the way home- I am trapped in the car with no other distractions so I might as well get some water in me.
Your garden is magnificent! And you are a true beauty! Love you, Lisa

Now my Fitbit tells me to drink 64 ounces a DAY which I have NOT ACCOMPLISHED YET!Been at this about a week…………keeping track of the water intake! If I do half my weight that will be 75 ounces a DAY!YIKES…………..I WILL GIVE IT A GO!!!
There is a GREAT BOOK MY SON KRISTOPHER gave me years ago about WATER and how important it is for the BODY!
      THANK YOU HIGH SCHOOL BUDDY!

Steve and I both have water bottles that we know how many oz they hold and I know I have to drink 3 of these bottles a day. First bottles of the day we fill at night and put by bathroom sinks so we drink them before we start the day. Has become routine now and yes I pee a lot! XOXO

So sorry to hear of your continued health trials. Not sure if it would be a good fit for your potentially more serious problems but we have had good luck with urgent care centers for non critical but time sensitive situations like bronchitis, strep throat, etc.
As for you and your garden in a profusion of roses, you bring the Spring time! Sniff every ? and bask in their evanescent beauty.

Contessa, you never cease to amaze me! I really hope to meet you in person one day so I can experience your vibrant personality first hand. You are lucky you have nurses that speak to you on the phone, but at our age it seems to me with your symptoms a trip to the emergency might have been good advice. For as you say, it is impossible to get quick appointments these days. I sincerely hope you are better now, sounds so scary. This getting old stuff really sucks! Your garden is fabulous! Here on my mountain top I am so limited with what I can grow, and once I do the wildlife eat it all. I have a herd of deer that come through every day and eat all my roses and new leaves off all my fruit trees. So annoying!

my advice? find a great Holistic Vet and after he’s checked out the dog and Banksy… take any advice he’s willing to give! they’re incredible. and they ‘usually’ have the caring heart of a true physician.
I spent two months being sick. the human PA never ‘heard it.’ I finally asked for a chest xray. I simply couldn’t BREATHE. turns out I had pneumonia in both lungs. WHY did I have to diagnose my own issue? who knows? would I have died? it’s the kind of NON-care we’ve gotten used to in this country. AAAGGGHHH! XOXO

OMG! I do not understand these doctors and medical staff….NOT AT ALL! I have Blue Cross Blue Shield (HMO). My hospital that I must use is the trauma center & destinations for most of the violent shootings in Chicago. YET,I GET MUCH BETTER TREATMENT! I have never heard of such a think. One would think we were living in a foreign country….I have heard of this type of treatment there. In other countries, there is some sort of algorithm used to determine the value of your life (based on age…younger people get better care), the older you are it seems the longer you wait for treatment only to be treated with indifference once your time for treatment finally arrives. NOT GOOD! I have NEVER been treated like this…NOBODY SHOULD!

NOW FOR THE GARDEN! I love the PEACE ROSE. My mother has always had a PEACE Rose in her garden. We even had a Chicago Peace Rose. What a PARADISE YOUR GARDEN IS and the Three Little Piggy Rose is beyond words…I LOVE IT! The terraces were such a brilliant idea and now that they have “matured” with beautiful flowers and greenery they are paying you back for all the hard work you put into it…and chasing down huge four-wheelers (LOL…picturing you with an army of huge trucks following you down the street) Your garden tours are magical and I just love them. Please do a video! You look amazing and I will be monitoring your site for updates on your health!

ITs the STAFF who bother me more than the DOCTORS!They are young and have NO idea what it feels like to have had HEART SURGERY and know something has not been right in the last 3 years because you lose your vision and feel like PASSING OUT!So, you have this HISTORY and then you have these WEIRID sensations that keep you from sleeping as you are in so much PAIN!
NO One ESPECIALLY ME wants to bother people and make a FUSS.I’m just reporting IN the SYMPTOMS as its NOT NORMAL for me……………..WHY was there not more COMPASSION or KINDNESS given at the CALL CENTERS?I think 60 MINUTES should do a few interviews and do a show on what kind of training they have etc…………..IT WOULD BE AN EYE OPENER I DO BELIEVE!WHAT do YOU think?

The garden looks enchanting. My husband and I went out early on Mother’s Day to our new farm, to sit on the porch and drink our tea and coffee. We lasted ten minutes before we began weeding. I have to admit that I am totally horrified at the response you received from your Medical Team and as a practitioner myself I know that this is not what we were trained to do. We are lucky enough here in the Back End of Beyond to have a wonderful MD who will still do house calls but I am afraid that those kinds of practitioners are few and far between these days, Because of my own background. the family and I haven’t had to call on his services although it is very reassuring to know that if I was unsure of anything then he would be at our house as fast as he was able to make it.

I do love, love, love a rose garden and it appears you look after yours so well. Justifying all the hard work. Bryn Walker suits you so well and you have the height to carry it well. So sorry to hear of your continuing illness, hope you find a specialist soon who can help. I too was told starting the day with a glass of water is beneficial (like you never bothered too much with it) I’m now so used to it I look forward to my a.m glass. Some mornings add slice of lemon or lime, delicious. A tip I had from a Chinese pharmacist is “do not have the water too cold as colon doesn’t like it at all” I think she was right goes down much easier. Really enjoy your postings, thank you.

Spend more time in your garden, with no shoes on, to really ground yourself and feel connected. Gardens and nature can heal so many things. Just slow down, enjoy this beautiful time of year, and have a plan ready in case this happens again any time soon. Love to you, Lisa

I’m so glad you are A-OK Elizabeth, but sorry you had such a stressful experience, first with the pain and the lack of sleep, and then with the rube-goldberg-like route to getting medical help. But your garden is glorious and it could provide rest and calm to anyone, so I’m glad you were out there enjoying it. Love the hats, the flowers, the outfits and the photos! K.

Hello Contessa, You must get some better connections to health professionals–these problems need attention right away, even if they turn out to be nothing. But I am glad that you are feeling better in general.

Your garden is absolute magic. I love the green background, and the features built into the landscape–the steps, furniture, stone or terracotta pieces, and so forth. I love how you manage to keep everything in proportion, something that can be done only by people with a real feeling for building a garden.

HE SOMETIMES BECAME A PROBLEM FOR MY VISIONS!

Very glad it wasn’t a serious illnes but it often turns out that those kind of pain come
from psychological pressure, which you even discern yourself. You do right when you
find joy in gardening and all the other little things in life which counts. Take care of No.1 and all my best. ….and don’t worry about wrinkles… they are your life and suit you very well and you have personality and charisma.

haha….the 6th sense, partly because I’m sensitive too. Good to let your emotion out
and forget the past. We are in an age where we should live very aware in the
present and enjoy time as good as possible. It’s not easy but it’s like excercise, do it regularly and never give up.

Your garden looks as if it’s in some remote corner of England, so lush, and with no houses (except that one) in sight. Walls of greenery, except for the walls of roses. My colleagues gave us rose bushes for our wedding–a great gift, IMHO. They are thriving so many years later.
Your outfit goes perfectly with the roses and looks great on you.
As for your health scare, WTF with medical professionals chewing you out?!?! This inability to get an appointment is a form of rationing. I am glad you are feeling better.
In a related vein, at a dinner party this weekend, conversation turned to health (as it does when the guests are our age). And one of the guests complained about the time she called the doctor (who was also my doctor) to come for a house call for an emergency and the doctor said to go to the emergency room. Everything turned out OK, worst case averted. I’ve been to the emergency room more times than I care to count for various family and it’s never fun. But even when everything was OK, nobody ever, ever complained that we had come. Once was when my kid had meningitis. Our doctor said: to the hospital, now! There are two kinds of meningitis: one where you just wait it out with Tylenol and the other where it can kill you in a few hours. My kid (who had been vaccinated, but I learned there are strains the vaccine doesn’t address) had the first kind but was kept in hospital overnight just in case. Oh, and no charge because we’re in France, with socialized medicine. Thank goodness.

Paradise/heaven – what an absolutely beautiful environment you two have created.

It was pure pleasure viewing all the pics.

Oh my goodness re your symptoms – when I felt like I had been stabbed in the back and pain across both shoulders my employer called 911 right away. As soon as emergency staff heard family history – women heart attacks – right away various tests re heart were done. Also follow up. Fortunately heart was fine. Hard to figure out what caused the symptoms.

Some friends too start their day with warm water/lemon.

What a beautiful post, from the garden to the hats and dresses. I loved it all. Sorry to hear of your medical scare but glad your feeling better. I was very encouraged to hear that you had no idea what you where doing when you started your garden. It is so beautiful and it inspires me to keep going with mine, even though I don’t have a clue I know what I like. Stay well.
