THIS IS MY KIND OF STUFF!

NOT ONE ITEM CAME HOME WITH ME!

A MAN AND HIS DOG!

I kept bumping into them and was happy to find them at their stall.

The DOG is from SCOTLAND, of course I cannot recall the breed.

There is a VERY SPECIAL STORY about a DOG like this who’s MASTER passed and the DOG sat on the GRAVE for YEARS.The town fed HIM.

SEE BELOW for THE TALE!

” HAVE YOUR SAY THE INCREDIBLE tale of Greyfriars Bobby, the faithful Skye Terrier who slept on the burial site of his beloved master for 14 years, has touched the hearts of Scots and visitors from around the world for generations. In Scotland, in 1850s, John Gray worked as a night watchman for Edinburgh City Police. Statue of Greyfriars Bobby being replaced on pedestal after it was knocked off its pedesta. Around 1856, Gray, or Auld Jock as he was sometimes known, took on a dog named Bobby to accompany him on his long rounds through the cobbled streets and closes of Edinburgh. Other accounts claim, he was actually a shepherd hailing from the Pentland Hills, but regardless of Gray’s true occupation, Bobby was devoted to his master and seldom left his side. After John Gray passed away from tuberculosis on 15 February 1858 the devotion of his most faithful canine companion continued. Gray was buried in an unmarked grave in Greyfriars Kirkyard in Edinburgh. Tourists flock each year to see Greyfriars Bobby. The morning after the burial, so the story goes, Greyfriars’ curator, James Brown, discovered Gray’s most faithful companion lying on his master’s newly-filled plot. As dogs were not permitted into the grounds of the kirkyard Bobby was quickly ushered away, only to return, defiantly attracted to the burial site of his dear owner. Come rain or shine, the vigil persisted. Brown eventually took pity on the dog and Bobby soon became a popular local figure. Each day, large crowds would gather in anticipation of the sound of the One o’ Clock Gun, which became Bobby’s signal to scurry towards the nearby inn for a lunchtime meal. Pupils from South Morningside primary school at the statue of Greyfriars’ Bobby in George IV Bridge, Edinburgh in June 1972. READ MORE – Ceremony to honour Greyfriars Bobby Stray dogs were not uncommon in 19th century Edinburgh, and strict licensing laws were in place to tackle the problem. Any dogs found without owners willing to cough up the necessary ‘dog tax’ Would be disposed of. Pavement parking should be culturally unacceptable – campaigners The ownerless Greyfriars Bobby was in great danger but in 1867 his fame saved him as Edinburgh’s then Lord Provost, William Chambers, stepped forward to pay the license fee. Chambers even supplied Bobby with a brand new collar, the inscription reading: “Greyfriars Bobby, from the Lord Provost, 1867 licensed”. The collar, along with Bobby’s feeding dish, is now on display at the Museum of Edinburgh. Statue of Greyfriars Bobby. Picture: Ian Georgeson. The life of Greyfriars Bobby, Auld Jock’s ever-loyal companion, eventually came to an end in 1872 at the ripe old age of 16. Bobby’s remains were interred outside the entrance of the kirk in one of the flower beds, a stone’s throw from his master. Memorial statue and fountain A year after Bobby’s death, a memorial statue, incorporating a drinking fountain intended for use by both canines and people, was erected at the junction of George IV Bridge and Candlemaker Row. Both the statue and the alluring tale which spawned it continue to enthral tourists from all around the world. In recent years, however, a tradition has surfaced which claims that good luck will come your way if you rub Bobby’s nose – bad luck for the statue as it turns out as its dark patina faces the prospect of being continually worn away, exposing the gleaming bronze underneath. Hoax? The story of Greyfriars Bobby entered the annals of local legend long ago. 11 Skye Terriers and the owners gathered at Greyfriar Bobby’s statue in 2014 to remember the pooch. Picture: Neil Hanna Numerous books and films, including the 1961 Walt Disney hit Greyfriars Bobby: The True Story of a Dog, have covered the tale in great detail over the years and Edinburgh has benefitted greatly from the tourism which it generates. However, there have been various claims that it was all an elaborate hoax, designed purely for the financial benefit of one or two men. In 2011, Dr Jan Bondeson, a historian and lecturer at Cardiff University, delved deep into the 140-year-old tale and concluded that it was nothing more than a shaggy dog story, created to draw in business for Greyfriars’ curator James Brown and restaurant owner John Traill. While Bondeson accepts that a dog fitting Bobby’s description did indeed roam the cemetery, he would have been nothing more than an ownerless stray that sniffed around, waiting on scraps. A lack of any firm evidence to suggest that a John Gray had ever been interred at Greyfriars other than from the accounts by both Brown and Traill, coupled by the fact that such a small dog would have made an unlikely policeman’s companion, also suggested to Bondeson (and many others before him) that something wasn’t quite right. Then there was the mystery surrounding Bobby’s age. Skye Terriers don’t often live beyond 10 or 12 years, but the rough-sleeping Bobby, who endured all manner of harsh weather conditions, supposedly survived until he was at least 16. According to Dr Bondeson.”

    Elizabeth,
I went to Greyfriars’s and saw the statue of Bobby on the pedestal.
That was on our 2017 Scotland adventure.
In fact, it was a stone’s throw from where we staying.
It’s the sweetest and saddest story of devotion of a dog.

You really saw some beautiful sights on this trip.
I bet Charlie is kicking himself that you two didn’t link up at Highgrove………..maybe next time.

Doing a blog catch-up and thrilled to be back on the garden tour. First of all ‘how couth’ … I die. A tour by the Earl Sandwich himself! Oh my! And, we’re finally at Highgrove . . . I’ve been chomping at the bit through the first three posts of the tour. For a moment I thought you might say Prince Charles greeted La Contessa himself and was ready to reach for the smelling salts. Alas, that was not to be BUT to be inside the gates, on the grounds, observing trees planted by future Kings. There’s nothing more to say . . . xo

I do believe I saw La Contessa in the Michael’s parking lot today, Saturday November 17th. Had I not been muffled behind an N95 face mask, due to the poor air quality, I would have yelled out “Hello”. If it wasn’t La Contessa, it was an impostor in chartreuse!

Another fairy tale post… you are utterly and completely divine… Disney needs YOU!!!! I choose to believe the story as it was recounted… it is beautiful and heartwarming… we need more fairy tales in our lives, more wonder and inspiration and joy and love. (And more COLOR.. all this adds up to YOU : ) Not to mention that dogs have human emotions, and they are better than many (many) humans. I was so sad to hear about Goose…my heart aches for you.
Of everything, I would choose the door in the garden leading to one room with a fireplace… a secret, magical, cozy spot… to write : ) XOXO

love, love, love it. Keep on going. Maybe you should become a travel blogger. I remember driving through Tetbury with my daughter on a mother daughter trip. I mentioned that i wanted to see Prince Chrales’ home. Well, Susannah would not let anything stop her. We drove to Tetbury and spied the house. In those days it was quite simple. None of the palaster’s had been attached, the garden had not begun. In all it was really quite simple and might I add a tad disappointing. Aw but now! This is a must see for me. I’ve seen his garden in photographs, just stunning. So happy for you to have this tour. Yippie!

THE AQUEDUCT!!!! An aqueduct for a backdrop is the ultimate garden statement. The more Roman the better! Now, you have an Italian that likes to build things….he must get started on YOUR aqueduct ASAP! That way you can host garden tours and point out that the aqueduct in the background was built by not-too-ancient Italians that lived on the land…. Gorgeous tour! I really loved this and all the little shops, the shop owners, stopping for CRUMPETS & TEA, stepping carefully over sluices and slices, roaming the Royal Gardens where the Princes play. What a treat…to be savored over a cup of Earl Grey and a crumpet. I love these tours so much!

Yes…the earthquakes…I forgot about them. On top of that add the fires and mudslides. I understand his fears. I heard from our friends in San Francisco. They reported that the air is practically unbreathable. All those people caught in that fast moving fire. I see the pictures taken around Paradise. The trees are still standing, deer are stepping over the dead burnt ones…but the entire town is GONE…like a bomb hit it. My thoughts and prayers are with all of you living in California. You married one smart Italian! Focus on the FOLLY

Thank you for the lovely photographs and commentary on your recent trip. In case you were not told, the story of Greyfriars Bobby was made into a full length feature film by the Disney Studios in 1961. It was based on the book of the same name. The lady in the store, her wool suit, reminded me so much of something Lady Di wore back in the day. Old school, Brit style. That flea market—be still, my heart. A small table in your hand basket. I do want to see it. The little boy is so adorable – filled with happiness.

One can visualize wandering about on the grounds and exploring the flea market – having a crumpet. Great photos.

The trip that keeps on giving to all of us! Thank you for continuing to post these wonderful photos and share where you went. Some of those shops have my name written all over them. Remember I’m the Texas woman who had an iron, Parisian cow head shipped home… which costs more than the cow head. I would need Debra to keep my credit cards and no matter what I said, did, or if I cried and screamed like a two-year-old, she couldn’t give them back to me. xoxox, Brenda

Hello Contessa, What could be better than old stone walls and the gardens and estates that contain them–except by adding antiques for sale! I loved the warning sign on the pitchfork. In Taiwan, deep water in parks is marked by signs showing a stylized wave with a hand sticking out of it–makes the point! That warning about deep silt is no joke–remember the newscaster Jessica Savitch, who drowned when her car fell into relatively shallow water, but the doors were mired in silt and could not be opened.

A while ago we had a bunch of old wooden-handled shovels and pitchforks that came from my great-grandfather’s garage, but we never thought of making a trophy of them, and they disappeared over the years.

Highgrove was so special, I agree! I use my tea towels from the shop all the time. Did you notice how each and every Delphinium was staked individually? Amazing…. So, he uses goat manure in many of the organic gardens, something I have been thinking about since we have goats in my village. To be continued!

As for the converted mill, so glad it was converted to a new use and not torn down and replaced with new faux-old buildings for ye olde shoppes.

    Hi Elizabeth,

Great post! Very interesting… I love crumpets but it has been years since I’ve had any.
I have a garage full of old tools that I was going to thin out but now am inspired to keep them.

I am keeping your mother in my prayers. Mine could not talk but when I said “I love you” she squeezed my hand. I was so lucky to be there when her soul embarked on her next journey. But I have often thought that some cannot depart with their children present. Whether you were there or not, she knew full well the love you have for her. How blessed we were to have such mothers.

This is a great post! Very interesting. I have a garage full of old tools on the wall that I was going to get rid of (or at least whittle down in number) but now am giving them a reprieve. A crumpet is like a spongy pancake. Very delicious!

    Ciao Contessa!

Another visual feast – your trip is truly the Gift that Keeps On Giving!! And lucky us to get a tour around the grounds of your Dream House. If we didn’t know by now, we all know what your idea of perfection is! Just mention Key Words in future and we can all go “A-Ha! We know what you Mean!!”

Your tour guide’s choices for accommodation have been so full of English charm & character, you have been very lucky. I am surprised, though, you weren’t led by the hand to try a crumpet! They are the very definition of Delicious!! In this house we do indulge on the occasional weekend in the shop-bought variety (I know … ) which we served toasted with lashings of butter and honey or marmalade. They are a thick, round, sponge-looking yeast bread made with bicarb soda to give them the characteristic holes which the bitter melts into. So it’s a warm, salty, sweet and buttery thing with loads of attendant calories but maximum pleasure. So sorry you missed out!!

I have coincidentally been sitting on a recipe for home-made crumpets this past little while – they are cooked on a flat grill plate inside a sort of large egg-ring, and will be spurned on to try it pronto. If it’s a winner, I’ll send you the recipe and you can start an English Tea House!

    Elizabeth,
Wonderful! Thank you. I can’t wait till we go to England again because it’s been far too long (other places to see). Gary was stationed in England and I stayed with him for several months. I also spent my junior year of college in Wales.

A CRUMPET is very like an English muffin, only denser. But it has the indentations for butter or clotted cream (I wonder if they have good vegan clotted cream by now.
