ITALIAN MEMORIES!

April 16, 2018 152 Comments

I was married in ITALY………..in 1986.

Five years later I would be living there!

I lived in ITALY for 3 years……….2 months and 8 days!

Do you think I wanted TO LEAVE?

HECK NO!!!!!

I felt at HOME there in the COUNTRYSIDE of FLORENCE,ITALY.

The only thing that could have made it BETTER was if we owned a CASA COLONICA or an old BARN as our HOUSE!

Three years went by relatively FAST……

Once I understood the BASIC’s!

HOW TO DRIVE!

GAS STOVE.

SMALL REFRIGERATOR.

Washing machine even SMALLER.

NO CLOTHES DRYER AT ALL!

EVERYTHING was IRONED as the water was so HARD the clothes dried STIFF,actually crunchy!

When I say EVERYTHING I mean EVERYTHING!

UNDERWEAR and TOWELS TOO!

One had to DRESS to go FOOD SHOPPING……..wool pants and a silk blouse.

ABSOLUTELY NO JEANS!

The Grocery store ESSELUNGA CLOSED on WEDNESDAY AFTERNOONS!

Closed on SUNDAYS AS WELL.

HARDWARE STORE would NOT sell my ITALIAN a BOX of screws…….only a few!

Clerk:”How many do you need?”

ITALIAN Husband “I don’t know I will take a box”

Clerk:”I can’t sell you a box what if someone else needs them!”

(ITALIAN MENTALITY……………. thinking about THE OTHER GUY!!)

Milk came in a LITER BOX.I bought 6 liters every other day.

It cost MORE than wine.

To Buy wine you drove up to the winery with your big glass bottles in hay set in a basket. You grabbed a hose inside the door…….No one was ever around and you filled up your bottles.Once home you syphon off the wine by a hose into smaller table size wine bottles and topped it off with an oil made for wine to seal the air.

ALL BILLS were paid at THE POST OFFICE!

(Such as phone, electrical and gas.)

IN CASH ONLY.

EASY to rob someone in line as they all had CASH!

Most things were paid in cash.Credit cards weren’t in fashion to pay when we lived there.

If you bought a House the loan could only be for 10 years. Most people paid in CASH and would never take out a LOAN.It just was not DONE.

YOU lived with FAMILY.

I passed an old OXEN DRAWN CART  daily on my way up and down the hill. One day I saw a FARMER amongst THE OLIVE TREES.I stopped the car and asked if he would sell me THE CART?

“YES”, without hesitation he said.I than asked HOW MUCH?

ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS was the AMOUNT.

I had to HOLD BACK MY EXCITEMENT!

He even knew where we lived on top of a hill that over looked FLORENCE.

He would DELIVER THAT CART the next day!

I didNOT tell THE ITALIAN as he would have asked TOO many questions!

Next day I am taking my SONS down the hill to school and WHAT DO WE SEE?

The OLD OXEN DRAWN CART being pulled up the hill by a TRACTOR!The wheels are actually spinning on the cart.I told my Oldest SON he would be late for school as we were turning around and following this tractor HOME!If any bits were to fall off the cart which was moving at about 5 miles an hour he was to jump out of the car and fetch them!I think that happened TWICE.

THE CART made it to our front garden!

I than took the BOYS back down the hill to school!

I than got a phone call at Home from The ITALIAN!

“Is there anything I should know about?”

You see he saw the CART being towed up the hill an HOUR earlier when he left for work!

He KNEW EXACTLY where THAT CART was going!!!!!!!!!!

Another GOOD STORY was when I traded olive oil for rusted sconces……..plus money!

Those sconces are mounted on wood on either side of the FIREPLACE NOW.

To some they are JUNK…….NOT TO ME!They held candles and were in a circular form at one time to Light the streets of Florence!

THE MEDICI CREST.

That was the family who ruled FLORENCE for many many years…………

This guy is BIG!

He resides at

Villa Demidoff, A Medici Villa

These chickens belong to another friend who lived in a CASA COLONICA.

They were fascinating people as well…………….too bad I cannot recall their name!

They lived in GRASSINA anyone out there remember?

I found this on one of my drives behind our HOUSE!

OLD ~ OLD ~ OLD!!!!!!

1991……..CHRISTMAS CARD.

I had seen a dress like this in a magazine and had this one MADE in FLORENCE!

By a woman who made Children’s clothing!

Oh, the ITALIAN was SO LUCKY HE HAD BOYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The MONEY THAT WAS SAVED!

This was either 1992 or 1993……..

Each summer we would stay at THE BEACH for about 6 weeks……

This was an excursion we took with FRIENDS.

A very famous Church that only the sides remain. The name escapes me at the moment!

SAN GALGANO!

(Thank you Alexa.xa on instagram)

NOTE:The ITALIAN is standing on his TIPPY TOES!

I loved MY sandals……had them FOR YEARS!!!!!!

There was a big basket hanging off the back side of me!Nothing has changed there either!

I still DRESS THE ITALIAN in COLORS!!!!!

I would be HAPPY to LIVE in this structure!I’m happy to say my ESTHETICS have NEVER CHANGED!

THIS IS BLISS FOR ME!

Can you make out the DOOR between the VITA AMERICANA?

That is what they call this type of IVY!

WE lived outside of FLORENCE…….20 Minutes to downtown .

We did this ONLY ONCE but we took the TRAIN to BOLOGNA.

(BEST FOOD IN ALL OF ITALY!)

  to buy our BOYS  MCDONALDS!

ME TOO……..as I loved a QUARTER POUNDER with CHEESE and THOSE FRENCH FRIES!

On that TRIP we found a great MARKET with FABULOUS ceramics………..too bad I had the ITALIAN with me!

He gives me THAT EYE ROLL!!!!

However, I did end up with some MAGNIFICENT CUPS!

The POWER OF PUPPY EYES!

My FASCINATION with OLD DOORS has NEVER left ME!

Also, the DOOR KNOCKERS were a BIG DRAW for ME!

I could NEVER be BORED walking around downtown!

The TABLE ARTISAN on the LEFT here and the ENTREPRENEUR SON  (food trucks) on the RIGHT!

WITH PAPA IN THE MIDDLE!

These were MY FRIENDS when we lived in ITALY……….

Starting on the LEFT we have GRACE the CANADIAN.Than CINDY an AMERICAN,Katharine an AMERICAN I donot recall the woman with the baby I think she is an ITALIAN………..at the VERY end is ANGELICA a GERMAN.

WE FOUND each other and would do PLAY DATES and meet up at PARKS or at each others HOMES…..

This DAY was a GRACE DAY she had us heading across the RIVER ARNO to this PARK and we had a picnic!

Grace lived in an OLD VILLA that was down the MOST BEAUTIFUL STREET to me called VIA CAROTA.

I would STOP by and have a cup of TEA with her in the afternoon before picking up the BOYS at school.

Grace was usually IRONING!

She has THREE KIDS.

Cindy lived across the PIAZZA from GRACE and she was and is a TOUR GUIDE.

She always had a good story to tell about THE TOURSIT’S quizzing her on her knowledge of ART WORK!

KATHARINE,knew everyone and how to OPERATE most anything. She was from Los Angeles, BRENTWOOD and became my FAST FRIEND!She too ended up with THREE children…….

Angelica, was LIVING MY DREAM LIFE!She owned a CASA COLONICA in the countryside outside a small village called GREVE.Most likely if you have been on a TUSCAN TOUR you went to GREVE!They had GRAPEVINES as well which my family got to participate one year in the VENNDEMIA.The picking of the grapes for the wine harvest!

Her husband was from LEBANON, she was GERMAN and they lived in ITALY therefore spoke ITALIAN and their SON went to the FRENCH SCHOOL!That child spoke all four languages BEAUTIFULLY!What a GIFT they gave their children!

There are MORE FUN STORIES to share like THE FACT, I had to go to DRIVING SCHOOL in ITALIAN and know ALL the PARTS of a MOTOR and their FUNCTION!!!!!!!!!Heck, I did not know them in ENGLISH!Everyone held their breath while I took that TEST!

My ITALIAN was NOT SO GOOD!!!!!

I PASSED!!!!!

A MIRACLE INDEED!

The Most IMPORTANT lesson I learned right away was NOT to stop for Pedestrians that are in the crosswalk! You are likely to be rear-ended!Actually, driving in ITALIA was MY BIGGEST FEAR of the MOVE and I can honestly say I conquered that FEAR after THREE DAYS!

Or the time I spent $100.00 on a SALMON for Christmas Eve that wouldNOT fit in the DINKY OVEN!I was horrified at the cost………who knew THAT FISH was so expensive in FLORENCE in 1991?Certainly NOT ME!But because the VENDORS KNEW who I was and had known my MOTHER IN LAW I did not have the COURAGE to say NO THANK YOU after they had wrapped it and charged me!

I called THE ITALIAN at WORK IN TEARS!!!!!!!

Than the FISH wouldn’t fit in the oven he was too BIG!So that ITALIAN MADE A BOX of wood covered in FOIL and CURVED THAT FISH TO FIT!

Do you know way back then 27 years ago you had to pay for a plastic bag!You also loaded up your groceries yourself!People were always bringing the plastic bags back to RE-USE!There were garbage cans for GLASS and PLASTIC way back in 1991!

You know those green bottles that seem to have popped up this last decade that are very POPULAR for DECOR that were for wine?SEE PHOTO ABOVE!

Well, I found mine at THE GARBAGE BIN at the base of our HILL……that’s right we had to put the garbage in the trunk of our car and drive it down to be PICKED UP!I always thought the emergency break wouldn’t HOLD while I did that!

When it came time to LEAVE ITALY and return to the STATES I would NOT leave without them!

Nor MY CARRELLO!!!!!!!

The OXEN DRAWN CART!

The last TAX that was paid on this was in 1948…….The metal tag is still on it!

My plan in Florence was to make it a FLOWER VESSEL.

The cart made it to CALIFORNIA only to decompose over the last 25 years……..she sits in the front yard today without her wheels which are in the side yard!Did I tell you SHE was found under the olive trees next to a VILLA where ELIZABETH BARRETT BROWNING lived?!

TRUTH!

HERE I AM sipping an ESPRESSO…….VERY RARE for ME with My newly acquired CARRELLO!

CIRCA 1993

FAVORITE TOOL FOUND was a little hand rake to knock down the olives from the trees!I think I SOLD THAT at my ANTIQUE SHOP years ago!

I bought HORSE MEAT thinking it was BANKSY MEAT!!!!!The SISTER IN LAWS would NOT eat it and I couldn’t understand WHY until the one went NEIGH NEIGH!!!!!!I ANNOUNCED I was NOT eating it either!!!!

THE ITALIAN DID!

He wastes NOTHING!!!!!!

I  found one of these little doors in STONE to BUY!!!!

So, I did without HESITATION!I hid it in the BIG CARS TRUNK from MY ITALIAN until Father’s Day came around! You see that is how I introduced the BIG EXPENSIVE STUFF TO HIM!

A GIFT for HIM but really a THRILL FOR ME!

Never mind he took the BIG CAR to work one day…He NEVER drove the BIG CAR TO WORK!And once again on his way he hears BANG~BOOM~ BANG in the trunk and calls me to ASK what is inside!!!!!!!!!!!!!!?

I had to tell him about HIS gift EARLY!

Not this one but a similar one is cemented into a wall in our Home…………

These were found in churches and Homes in Italy.I have been told varying stories about their purpose but lets just say it was used as a little SAFE.

ALL THE PHOTOS HERE ARE MY OLD FASHION PHOTOS WITH A REAL CAMERA FROM SOME VERY SPECIAL BOOKS THAT HOUSED MY MEMORIES OF OUR YEARS ABROAD.

I found a lovely BRITISH WOMAN out in SAN CASCIANO who made HATS!!!!!!!!

A SIGNORA BING, I think was her name!OH, what an OUTING we had!I would round up MY TRIBE and OFF we would GO!She lived in a BEAUTIFUL OLD FARMHOUSE with a GARDEN TO DIE FOR!The one hat I purchased lived on my HEAD and on my FRONT DOOR FOR YEARS!I still have it!!!!!!!!

I found the ONLY THRIFT SHOP out on a hill in SCANDICCI.In fact, a BLOG I READ NOW OUR FRENCH OASIS in FRANCE mentioned it recently…… Emmaus! I gather its a CHAIN!After the thrift shop an antique shop or two were on the road home!I could ALWAYS find a TREASURE!

I READ two BLOGS that take place in FRANCE well MORE but these two I will mention TODAY!

One is OUR FRENCH OASIS which is written by an ENGLISH LADY living THE LIFE of MY DREAMS in an OLD FARMHOUSE with HER CHILDREN and HUSBAND!Click over and SEE what I am talking about!

Another is TASTE OF FRANCE an AMERICAN living overseas in a FRENCH VILLAGE!She shares HER LIFE and recipes and wanderings with US and is ALWAYS SO KIND TO COMMENT ON MY BLOG!

Both of these WOMEN are EXCELLENT WRITERS………….and do a FABULOUS JOB!

If you are a EUROPEAN JUNKIE like ME take a PEEK!

(FANCY NANCY YOU WILL ENJOY THESE SO SUBSCRIBE!)

I could go on and on……….but I will STOP HERE for TODAY!

WE did NOT FLEE TO ITALY as some FAMILIES DO to have an EXPERIENCE.

We were NEEDED to Help with my Husbands FAMILY.

We lost Both his parents.

The reason we were in ITALY was due to the DEATH of MY IN LAWS………they died at different times but left behind a couple of SISTERS to MY HUSBAND that needed a HELPING HAND.They were teenagers………MY ITALIAN is 10 years older than the first daughter. He promised his 53 year old MOTHER that he would MOVE back and CARE for the family in her final days.He flew back to the STATES helped me pack up………we sold all OUR BELONGINGS to friends and strangers and were back in ITALY within 10 DAYS…………………….with our TWO SONS.

I barely spoke the language…………

THIS EXPERIENCE MADE ME WHO I AM TODAY!

I fell in LOVE with this old CITY and being THE AMERICAN did not want to come BACK to the USA!

But that is a story for another day……….and by now you must be ready to Hop over to those other Blogs I mentioned!

SO CIAO CIAO………ARREVADARRCI …….until next Time!

PS.A REAL CONTESSA LIVED DOWN THE HILL FROM US.SHE HAD THE CASA COLONICA AND THE CANADIAN HUSBAND WHO LOOKED LIKE SANTA WITH A TON of DOGS!IT LEFT A BEAUTIFUL IMPRESSION ON ME.I do THINK of her often……………..

Wowwwwww!! Just taking a small respite here and caught up to your blog. It feels like I just read the first few chapters in a wonderful book!! You really put us all THERE!! I hear the geese at the window, feel the crunchy clothing, see the parts falling off the cart !!! Even the celiac part ( almost half my family is celiac) and what a challenge!! All that PASTA!! And sooo much more,,,,,,,, loved it all Contessa! You are very talented in your writing and your profound passion shines through. My husband is Italian on the maternal side and they know nothing of their history except his grandparents came from Italy in the early 1900’s ,,,,,,,, but upon arriving in America they wanted to be very American and rarely even cooked Italian. So sad to me, but they DID take care of family. His uncle “UNKIE” lived to be 98 still smoking cigars Lol. Thank you for this captivating story and hopefully there’s more to come. XO

Oh oh oh! I was going to type how lucky you were to live such a glorious life and then I thought actually that is only the half of it – what a wonderful set of opportunities you may have been given – but even more importantly you took those gilded opportunities and absolutely live them to the max! Now there is a life lesson if ever there was, the photos and the prose are fantastic – I am happily swooning here in Scotland (not so glamorous) although as a transplanted Kiwi I think myself very lucky to live here (closer to Italy and France than back home 🙂 )

Loved this post and the pictures! I hope you continue the story. I need to know what happened to the sisters! My husband and I took a trip to Tuscany and Umbria three years ago and simply loved it all of it! San Galgano, Pienza, Montepulciano, Pitigliano, Chiusdino and the Sacro Bosco: The Garden of the Monsters or Garden of Bomarzo which is right up your alley. Your writing elicited lot of wonderful memories. Thank you.

Thank you on so many levels, for another fabulous post, because your posts are always unique and original and I simply love reading them and thank you for thinking of me and my blog. Our youngest daughter and I were meant to be going to Italy next week but we had to cancel. The travel to get way down south to the heel, was just way too complicated from this part of France, the easiest and cheapest route was to go to London first, then fly and then hire a car and drive for two hours, the total trip was going to take nearly two days!! Hopefully we shall go in July instead, cannot wait and I shall ask your advice before we go! xx

So fascinating: it is amazing where life will take us, isn’t it? Do your boys remember those years? Are they bi-lingual? I have always lived in the States and only started traveling in my fifties (money, my friend!) But now, of course, I travel all the time but still…..it does not compare to actually living the life. Thank you for this wonderful story!!!

Ohhhh!!! Contessa!!! I just loved this post! You really must keep adding to it and write a book. Your style is wonderful. You and the Italian are such a great couple.
I could relate, my hubby is Dutch and in 1990 we moved to the Netherlands because of his elderly parents, we thought it would also be a great experience for me as an American. It truly was a life changing experience, we lived there three years, the second half in the center of the medieval city of Amersfoort. Old world charm and the Dutch seeped into my bones. I craved a daily reminder and in 2014 designed a shed to remind me of the 15th century water gate. Hubby and I built the shed together and it delights me every day.
Your home and yard are so wonderful to see. I’m just south of you by about three hours so if you ever have tours I will be there!

Elizabeth, I’m still trying to catch my breath after reading your post again and again and again…Wonderful, happy, precious, lively, colourful, flavoursome memories of things past, vividly described by you in a Proustian manner, bringing out sweet nostalgia of bygone days, stirring up emotions and awakening the senses , transporting us all through a unique time capsule, all the way to picturesque Tuscany.
Coming back to mundane reality, I think few people use tumble dryers in the Mediterranean countries. Be it the mentality or the climate, je ne sais quoi. I do slave once a week over ironing, thank God for Elna Press…I iron everything…I was supposed to do this mandatory chore today but decided to daydream instead, thanks to your incredible post. And I’ve just discovered a small tub of left over tiramisu cream in the tiny freezer…TANTISSIMI BACI xxx

So enjoyed reading this post with your wonderful photos; took me back to when our two children were that age (we teasingly call them Potalians since I am Polish and husband is Italian). Loved hearing about your past family experiences living in Italy. I can now see how it has influenced your fabulous Italian style! I married my Italian 38 years ago and am still an Italian wanna be…and still hope to visit the Florence area someday. 🙂

    Hi Elizabeth!
What fun memories you have, shared in such a lively and interesting way. I feel myself transported to Italy just reading about all your adventures there! A few years ago I studied Italian at the local JC, gosh it was hard to learn. And now, because I didn’t have a chance to use it, I’ve forgotten most of what I’d learned.
I grew up for awhile in Germany, German was my first language! Momma was German and my parents had a very European attitude in the way my sisters and I were raised. While we lived there we travelled often and to so many wonderful places. The experience of living abroad changed me and has informed my life since. I always wanted the same thing for my own daughters, and we were able to share some of those same experiences with them. Now in his career husband has been fortunate in that he frequently travels to Europe on business, and sometimes we have been able to go along, too. My first born wound up getting her Masters degree in Ireland, because of her earlier exposure to the country during some of those trips. I think eventually my husband and I will wind up living somewhere in Europe, if only for a few years. The lifestyle and attitude just suits us and feels more like home, even though we’ve lived in California for most of our lives!
By the way, I had that same asymmetric hair cut in the 80’s! I thought I was tres-chic. But I see now that you wore it sooo much better!
I’m so looking forward to meeting you in person, very soon!

I love reading about your life in Italy. The cities have changed a lot and become much more cosmopolitan. But I think that out in the countryside, pockets of the old Italy remain. When we retire I would love to just live there for 6 months and explore it from top to bottom.

The details are enchanting…filling up the oil bottles of olive oil and carrying them in a basket of hay. The story of the cart and the joy of found friendships. Beautiful! Gorgeous! Memorable! Thank God his birthday was a few days away, so I explained how a man of his stature NEEDED an appropriate place to store his personal things. I didn’t even care that my things would remain in another chest. I HAD MY ARMOIRE!!!! As I read your blog, I think you are my SISTA from anotha MISTA!!

Love this post! As an American expat in Provence I can relate to so many of your experiences…particularly those from “back in the day!” Newer arrivals here in Provence know nothing about life before Amazon…when you could easily spend a full day or more driving around from shop to shop trying to find the widget or gadget you needed (only after figuring out the name for it in French, of course)…back when NOTHING was open on Sunday…when grocery stores closed for a couple hours at lunchtime…when the only way to buy or sell something was by posting a 3 x 5 card on the bulletin board at one particular shop in town…when watching tv meant only French tv…no Skybox, no Freesat, no Netflix, no streaming, nothing in English, just French! Like you, I was always infatuated with old, traditional things and for years was always dragging “antiques” home however I could get them there! Anyway, thanks for this lovely look at your Italian life!

The French did NOT HIDE the RESTROOMS!
In ITALY you had to BUY something at THE BAR before you could even ask where and if you could!NO one wanted you using the Bathroom!
I had Celiac D. at the time and did not know it!I FOUND EVERY RESTROOM that could be available to ME!The BEST was in COIN a department store in the MENS department hidden into the paneling!!!!!!!THAT was a COOP!

What beautiful photos, what charming memories! There is something special about living somewhere besides where you were born. Everything is new and novel, like the wine dispensed into a huge glass bottle from a hose, but to the locals it is as normal as water. I loved reading about your time in Italy. I tried to work in Milan (in banking) in the mid 90s, but it was nearly impossible with the unemployment rate there. I know people smile for photos, and that we choose the photos that show the best smiles, but….you can tell when people are smiling for the camera or smiling because they are sincerely happy. What comes through in your pictures and your writing is the profound love you, your Italian and your boys have for each other. You guys always seem to be having the time of your lives. While it’s true that you have some excellent adventures, there are people (surely you have encountered them) who in the same situation would be morose and complaining. I come here above all for your attitude. The world needs more of you.
The Italian clearly was a catch, finding ways to incorporate your treasures into your home. The fish box sounds brilliant. And he looks so perfectly Italian in that shot on the beach, with red espadrilles to match his red polo. That is the definition of casual chic.
Re village life in Italy, it’s much the same here still today. The grocery store is closed on Sundays and on Monday afternoons; also from 12:30-4:30 p.m., for lunch break. The supermarkets have been closed on Sundays, too, but now a few are opening on Sunday mornings. Fridges and washing machines still are small, and few people still have dryers. Did you have to buy bottles of gas for the stove? And hot water heaters above the sink in the kitchen and another in the bathroom? (Those are disappearing.) People still pay their bills at the post office, though now it’s just the elderly–most people have automatic payments. Until two years ago, we had to take our trash to big bins down the street. It was quite convenient–anything smelly went out ASAP. Now we have individual trash cans with electronic chips and they weigh the trash. Kind of extreme change.
The big event photo with your family looks like a fashion shoot–the setting, the colors, that dress!! It’s stylish today–I hope you kept it. And your asymmetrical hair is very fashion-forward. You must have been so glamorous to your Italian neighbors–a tall, chic Americana.
Thank you for the shout-out. You are very kind. And thank you for giving me something to smile about all day. My head will be in Tuscany.

Oh Elizabeth I loved your post – so enjoyable to read! My Nonnie came to the US when she was a teenager and she told me so many interesting stories about Italy when we were both younger. Thirty years ago I traveled all over Italy, and Florence was my favorite spot. How fortunate that you lived in the countryside there for several years!
You do have an eye for treasurers – and it’s a good thing that the Italian doesn’t reign you in too much.
My mom’s good friend is from Italy, and I’ve never seen her in jeans – and very rarely in pants – even in the winter. She always looks so fashionable, and she has the best shoes (like you).
You should scan all your old Italy photos, upload them to a site like Snapfish, and make a photo album.
Will Nicholas be on Cape Cod this summer with his food truck?

Enjoyed this blog thoroughly. I like that you/Italian were supportive of his family. To pack up and move to help them was very heart warming.

This move certainly gave you a new cultural experience and wonderful memories.

This blog also brought back memories to me – 1986 – the year I met my future husband – my workmate said to me one morning I’ve met the man for you – and introduced us. Here too bills – electric/telephone/hydro were paid at the post office in cash. Remembering too the earlier years when most stores were closed on Sundays.

Trust you to spy the cart and put it to good use and to get it shipped back with you. A treasure.

Elizabeth, I love this so much. I have to say I just adore the photos of you all. You remind me so much of an Italian Vogue model from that time. It was good of you guys to move there and help take care of the sisters. That had to be a huge thing to bring your boys there and do that. However, in hindsight, it made for the most wonderful experiences and an appreciation of all that is beautiful and different. What a terrific start for young boys to be immersed in a different culture. I wish we had done this . How wonderful you have these albums and your special souvenirs like the wagon and the bottles and so many beautiful things and the amazing friends you made. Please share more of these tales. By the way, I once stayed in the countryside right out of Florence and it was the most beautiful place, called I Parigi. I don’t know if you know of it, but I think it was an old nunnery or something, now a hotel. One of our best trips ever. xoxo Kim

Fabulous memories and so wise to take photos at the time! What a treat for us all to get a glimpse of La Dolce Vita (of course, bittersweet having the family reasons for being there in the first place). I’ve been to Florence many times but it was only in the 21st Century that a camera came too. At the time you think that your memories will be enough.

Back in the Olden Days when I was a Girl, I had a romance with a Roman aristocrat and we drove up to Florence for a getaway and for me to meet some of his friends, all (children of) landed gentry, so got to see and stay in some amazing places including a casa colonica in Arezzo that I was only reminiscing about today! We had lunch at a friend’s parent’s villa in Fiesole one day and cocktails with a couple of principessas in their palazzo apartment in downtown Florence. Such a different experience to most of my other visits.

My favourite museum there is La Specola, the 18th Century medical wax museum. Not for the squeamish but has to be seen to be believed!

AREZZO, saw me ONCE A MONTH as the BIG ANTIQUE FAIR was held there the first weekend of every month! That is where I started my collection of EX-VOTO……..body parts!
I remember they were about 7 to 10 lira………..the bigger heart ones were like 20 lira!It was the cheapest thing I could COLLECT.I loved how they came from a church and were for HEALING……..Now lets hope they were NOT stolen from a CHURCH to SELL!!!!!But leftover STOCK found in the ATTIC!!!!!I gave them a HOME and still LOVE THEM…………..I think I can build a HUMAN!Got ARMS, legs, head, heart,BOOBS!!!
What an experience you had getting INTO THOSE HOMES!!!!!I know the FERRAGAMO FAMILY has a VILLA in FIESOLE and they had PEACOCKS!One flew over my car VERY LOW driving up one day!Did the PRINCIPESSAS play the GRAND PIANO????I have heard about them but never met!I have never been to LA SPECOLA!!!!!!!!!!!Is it on the RIGHT side of the ARNO under SAN MINIATO back a bit closer to the PONTE VECCHIO?
I NEED TO GO BACK………..I have been saying THAT FOR YEARS………..BUT what do I do with MISTER BANKSY?
I would LOVE to hear MORE of your STORIES…………………UNABRACCIO XX

Oh, if you are into ex-voto you will go mad over La Specola!! Yes, it’s right next door to Palazzo Pitti and the Boboli Gardens. There are even a few life-sized waxworks done in renaissance poses. It’s all so “the agony and the ecstasy”!! There were only about 2 other tourists when I went several years ago, so not to everyone’s taste…Put it on the top of your list when you go back as it will be yours – Banksy will need to be billeted somewhere very accommodating to his eccentricities…I’m sure one of your blog fans nearby would love to have a brush with his stardom!

I wonder if these are the same principessas? They lived somewhere near Santo Spirito from memory. No piano playing at our intimate get-together, just some serious chit-chat with my visconti. Not much smiling with these Lesser European Royals!

Aren’t peacocks a hazard when you live near gentry!! Speaking of Ferragamo, the Ferragamo shoe museum is my second favourite place there.

Luckily for me, Mr P thinks all my Italian Romantic Stories are hysterical – yes, I’ve always had a Thing for them – so I can trot them out from time to time. I may give them an airing on my blog one day. For now, the names will always be changed to protect the innocent, etc etc!!

      Unabraccio back xx

    Oh Elizabeth,
I have loved reading about your life in Italy.
The small details and the big.
Casa Colonica, the trip to McDonalds, the 1991 Christmas card, ivy covered doors……………all of it.

I was in Italy for the first and only (so far) time in 2015. Florence was a gorgeous city, and the countryside was so beautiful. I love reading about your life, what a wonderful adventure you are on. May all the wonderful blessings continue for you. xoxo

PS – I use the same technique with my husband and “major” purchases. A slow introduction is always the way to go, and works to everyone’s benefit every single time.

Contessa, you pack such a punch and in sentences, no less! I loved reading this so much. Your writing is lyrical and descriptive. If you ever do a writing/blogging workshop I would love to attend.

You’ve certainly learned a thing or two about writing since high school, very fortunate for us that are clamouring for your stories in book form. If I should ever find myself in CA, I will take you up on that glass of wine. Alas, I am landlocked in Albuquerque, NM which actually in this moment is not a bad place to call home.

Well, now … I might need a glass of wine after that visit to Italy. And some music! Struck mostly by your Exotic Tan and Asymmetrical Hair Style , The Handsome Italian and Beautiful Boys. I can easily see why your heart bleeds occasionally for those years. If there is one thing I have learned in life, it is that it is very hard to go back. CHANGE in so many ways has taken place: You have a delicious home and family here, your roots are deeply implanted, everything and everyone that makes your life work is here… I know because we have revisited our former duty stations while we spent nearly 20 years living in some beautiful tourist areas while in the US Navy. Nothing has remained the same and I wouldn’t trade Lafayette even for Hawaii and our two yrs there with a hilltop home we bought and a gorgeous view of Pearl Harbor Monument. All of our fun party friends are in other parts of the world. So the beat goes on. What a grand life that had to have been. But the home and gardens here are pretty romantic. And besides who wants to struggle without our amenities today. THANK YOU for a beautiful tour. My heart felt it all ……

This is just fascinating. I’ve been waiting all day to hear your adventures. What lovely memories you have. Experiences that will be with you a lifetime. I’ve been to Florence once, but to live there and be immersed in the culture, what an opportunity. If you don’t mind, I think I’ll use that little Father’s Day trick you mentioned. I laughed out loud at that! I just always use…oh that, I’ve had it forever!?. Thank you for sharing your history with us. Can’t wait for the next chapter!
