LIVING WITH A RETIRED HUSBAND!

January 25, 2023 60 Comments

NO NOT MY HUSBAND BUT MY GIRLFRIENDS HUSBAND!

HERE IS A LITTLE INTERVIEW I DID WITH ANITA and PAUL about THAT RETIRED LIFESTYLE!

MANY OF YOU ALREADY KNOW I HAVE BEEN DOWN WITH PNEUMONIA FOR A COUPLE WEEKS NOW!

I HOPE TO DO A POST EXPLAINING MY SYMPTOMS AND WHAT IT WAS LIKE AT 62 years of age.

I am still in RECOVERY but doing better today to move to the computer!

SO I WILL BE WORKING ON THAT NEXT!

  STAY TUNED!

  XXX

Paul

ANITA RECENTLY YOUR HUSBAND RETIRED.

HOW HAS THAT IMPACTED YOUR LIFE?
WHAT IS THE BEST MEDICINE YOU CAN SHARE?

Elizabeth, Paul retired just before covid lockdown in May 2020.  Covid impacted heavily on our lives, the same as everyone else’s worldwide.

We had just moved permanently to the country when this happened.

This was the first time we had ever been together everyday our entire 35 years of married life, except for a year we lived in Singapore.

Paul always worked in the off shore oil industry

on a 4 week rotation.  4 weeks work……4 weeks home.

Living on a big property with acres between us helps!!!!

I also encouraged Paul to join the local CFA (Country Fire Authority) and now he’s a volunteer wildfire fighter.

He’s met new people and this has helped his integration into village life.  I think its wonderful that he’s doing something

independently from me.  Paul brings home great chats after meetings and training sessions.

Anita & Paul

IS THERE LACK OF CONVERSATION AT THE DINNER TABLE?

We talk all day as there’s a lot to do here.

TV is ok at dinner time as we’ve covered the worlds problems by 8.00 a.m………..each day!

ARE THERE ANNOYING HABITS?

Yes!!!! But I have some too!!!  He dresses at the same time every day and keeps his day structured like he was still working.  He even takes morning and afternoon tea breaks.

DOES THIS RETIRED STATE REQUIRE MORE MEAL PREP FROM YOUR SIDE?

Initially yes.  It drove me crazy for a while until I showed him how to prepare sandwich fillings for lunch and  make some simple pasta dishes.

Paul never had to cook EVER as he worked on facilities where that was done for him.

He can now make a great tuna pasta for dinner and make a hamburger mix.

If I send him shopping for seafood………he brings home the best.

He can do a good take-away………he’s great at reading menus!!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE THING TO DO TOGETHER?

Probably working in the garden.

Travelling………we compliment each other.

Going for country drives…….even though we live in it!!!

IS THERE A ROUTINE IN THE HOUSE?

I have no routine.

Paul keeps strictly to his.

DO YOU FEEL THE NEED TO TELL HIM WHAT AND WHERE YOU ARE GOING?

Because we live in a remote location……..yes.

Often I spend a lot of time driving because the nearest big city is a distance.

DO YOU AGREE ON THE SAME TV SHOWS?

Yes!!! We love crime drama.

WHO GETS UP FIRST IN THE MORNING?

Paul does. In the winter he lights the fire as we live off grid………no main electricity, and then he makes us a cuppa.

He likes to read his emails and the newspaper online.

HOW MANY YEARS TOGETHER?

YOU WERE ALWAYS LIVING AWAY FROM EACH OTHER AS A MARRIED COUPLE AS YOUR HUSBANDS WORK INVOLVED TRAVEL.
DO YOU THINK THAT WAS A POSITIVE NOTE ON THE RELATIONSHIP?

We have been together 40 years Elizabeth and I believe our marriage lasted the long haul as Paul worked away.

We always looked forward to seeing each other on his return.

ANITA please have PAUL answer the following questions after you have!

Let’s see how well he knows YOU!

1. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR? Blue……..

2.FAVORITE TIME OF DAY? Morning and 5 p.m……..wine time!!

3. FAVORITE VEGTABLE? Potatoes………love them.Tomatoes close second.

.4. FAVORITE FLOWER? Hard one.  Crazy about dahlias but I adore Geums………especially the tangerine ones.

5.WOULD YOU RATHER BE WITH PEOPLE OR ALONE IN YOUR DOWN TIME? Alone.

I’ve spent a lot of time on my own my entire adult life. I value quiet time.

PAUL’s ANSWERS NOW BELOW!

1. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE COLOR? Paul said he’s not sure but guessed BLUE

2. FAVORITE TIME OF DAY? Paul said Sunrise

3. FAVORITE VEGETABLE?  Paul said Parsnip which is a pretty good guess……I love them!!!

4. FAVORITE FLOWER?  Paul said DAHLIA .

5.WOULD YOU RATHER BE WITH PEOPLE OR ALONE IN YOUR DOWN TIME?

Paul said I like to be with people……..not really right Paul!!!

CAN HE DESCRIBE THE FIRST DATE FROM WHAT YOU WERE WEARING TO WHAT YOU DID OR ATE? We both remember that day Elizabeth.  I was on the handlebars on my friends push bike being ridden around.  I was wearing pink hotpants.  Groovy!!!  I can’t remember a first date Elizabeth as we were friends for 6 years before we got together.  As friends we ate a lot of cheese and drank a lot of red wine.

PAUL SAID THE SAME THING!!!

THEN PLEASE GIVE HIM A SCORE FROM 1 TO 10. TEN BEING THE BEST SCORE POSSIBLE!

We all have annoying habits, we all have faults ………. but I would give him a 10……….

sempre xx

(Paul scored pretty well……I think maybe an 8!!!!)

What a darling couple. I loved this. I hope Max can retire soon because I have loved the time he was off and he keeps busy as I do. We seem to figure it out. I look forward to it as he worked so very many years and long hours!
My dad retired later in life and he and mom never had any tine together before she died. Retiring early as you can is a great idea provided you can have fun together and both have things to keep you occupied and interested I think.
I can’t wait to read about their garden!

Love this post Elizabeth! My husband is 11 years older than I and is gearing up to retire. I am sure there will be a little adjustment but not to much as we have both worked from home the last 11 years. The only difference is that he did travel at least every 2 months and that will be an adjust meant for him and me. When he travels I typically get up to all of the things he hates me to do, like rearranging the house, painting rooms, etc
I cannot wait to check out Anita and Pauls garden!
Thank you Anita and Paul for sharing your story!

Great interview…and so interesting… I still work so haven’t had this experience YET…but it will come. Part of me looks forward to it and part does not. It is more about me having always worked (began at 15 in retail shop) and missing the social interaction as I have a very people-oriented job. But would have more time to work on writing–two books started and not making headway given limited time (and THE wedding : ) SO SORRY to read that you have had pneumonia and very relieved you are on the mend. Sending love and all good wishes for full recovery soon!! XO

Retirement- half the money & twice the husband! Still adjusting almost 3 years into my retirement, 7 years into his. Starting retirement at the exact moment Covid lockdowns began allowed slothful habits to develop. This article inspires me to break them. Thank you!

What a lovely couple! I remember your talking about them in an earlier post. I loved the pictures; it sounds like they have a good life there. Like Juliette, I wonder about the off-grid arrangement. They are both healthy and active, which contributes to a good attitude. Anita and Paul set a good example for us all! I could not imagine my husband ever being in my way; we have our own space/chores/activities, and a deep respect for each others schedules, responsibilities, and preferences. That is probably why we enjoy our time together so much. I suppose it could be different if one or the other partner in a couple becomes bored. Thank you for introducing them to us, and thanks Anita and Paul for sharing your perspective. I loved reading this.

Contessa, rest up and take good care of yourself to get in the fast lane to recovery.

    Hi there CONTESSA
How lovely to be living in the country and enjoying gardening together.
Retirement – my husband stopped working many years ago – I was and am still working tho not full time. I felt bad for my husband when COVID hit as I was now off work so around the house a lot! I felt his peace and tranquility was disturbed. Tho he didn’t mind.
Now back at work so he has a break from me!
We have different sleep/wake up schedules. The few mornings I am up early I again feel that I am breaking his peaceful morning tranquility.
It’s quite funny – my husband goes to bed early and if I’m not working he will say to me “have a nice evening”. When I am in/out of the house he will say thanks for stopping in. Great sense of humour he has.
The main thing is for people to have interests – do things alone or together. Have a daily walk or two.
Glad you’re feeling better – but do NOT overdo it.

    Ma Chere Contessa,

So sorry to hear you had pneumonia! That sounds terrible.
At the beginning of January Paul got covid and I had it two days later.
Can’t imagine where he got it as he has been isolating pretty much given his autoimmune condition.
I have recovered, but he’s still fatigued.
Your pneumonia must have been tough.
Glad to see that you’re back and writing again. ?
    Stay healthy!

This was so much fun! Anita … tell us more about living off the grid?! No electricity? How do you cook (gas?) and get internet? My husband is considering retirement soon … after 22 years together where he traveling during the week. Covid, of course, introduced us to weekly life together … it’s an adjustment. I hope you convince Contessa and the Italian to make the trip to Australia. Cheers! xo

Love meeting Anita and Paul and reading how they are experiencing togetherness in retirement. Definitely going to check out her Instagram! We have some very good friends who live outside of Melbourne in Shepherds Flat. Such gorgeous country! My husband is partially retired and I’m not. Although we enjoy each other’s company, I’m grateful that I have my time away at work and Pilates.

omg. it took a while to get used to michael being home ALL THE TIME. he basically had no hobbies/interests except vegging and watching tv…now he cooks and cleans and even does the laundry – so no complaints. he’s a good traveling companion, too. he kept ‘business hours’ for the longest time, but now sleeps in a bit. just like me.

I just spent 5 months with my husband and we have been married for 32 years and those 5 months was a trial. I found I missed my routine. (My quiet mornings) and I missed just being alone. I’m glad he’s okay don’t get me wrong but the day he went back to work I heard angels singing! Which is weird because for the first 17 years we worked together daily in his shop! I think as you get older you become more ingrained into your own way of doing things.

Hello Rena. I understand completely what you mean here. I use to spend 6 months of each year on my own, so i understand the need for quiet time. Having great friends, family and a diverse amount of interests has helped me over my solo period. I’ve made the adjustment now and I couldnt compliment life without Paul here all the time.

    Hi Anita
Loved this interview. I had a good laugh when I read you love to watch crime dramas. Retired husband, moved to country, spending EVERYDAY together. Yikes!
Anita sounds a lot like me! My husband was gone most of our marriage. Adjusting to him underfoot is still a challenge. He has many hobbies so I do get my alone time too, Anita. That and Liking each other, as Anita points out is key. Gardening together out in the fresh air with no stresses around (country living) sounds perfect. Must take a look at your garden.
Looking forward to Contessa and Her Italian in Australia.
Thank you for sharing Anita honest answers.
