MARSALA,SICILY

September 20, 2025 123 Comments

HOTEL CARMINE is a three star GEM.An old nunnery restored to host THE TOURIST.

Cruising the gardens………

Across the street from our hotel window.

See that RED SIGN on the building?

There is a house FOR SALE and I am ALWAYS INQUISITIVE!

THE MORNING SPREAD in THE NUNNERY!

CAN YOU GUESS WHO WENT CRAZY HERE?

What comes to YOUR MIND when you see this little balcony?

For me it is Romeo and Juliet!

RUINS IN MARSALA…………… in the middle of our walk through the town.

No garbage.

No grafiti.

THE SALT FARM. On the way to catch a ferry to MOZIA. A small island full of artifacts.I was in MY ELEMENT!A very good friend of THE ITALIAN told him he must take me there and HE WAS RIGHT!

The RED VELVET Venetian shoe belonged to a man on the ferry.

I thought that was an interesting choice for such a HOT DAY.

1921 archeological dig on the island of……..MOZIA.

FOUND TREASURE!

READ below for the history of this very small island.

A GREEK STATUE found on the island of MOZIA.

A MAN FROM THE 5th century BC.

They can tell how his arms were from the CARVED SHOULDER MUSCLES!

Found in 1979.

INCREDIBLE………..

YES, I would have LOVED to bring HIM HOME WITH US!

Todays Theater /Drama mask!

From the SIXTH century if I have my Roman numerals RIGHT?

Note there was a door at one time by the horizontal latch.

ARTIFACTS from MOZIA………..there were so many items found. It was as if you were wandering around in that period of history. They are STILL DIGGING!Below is a set of cosmetic tools I thought were FASCINATING!

WE WOMEN HAVE ALWAYS BEEN TRYING TO ENHANCE OUR BEAUTY!

KUDOS to the person who put this BACK TOGETHER!

There were cases and cases of these little pots!

BACK TO OUR NUNNERY, which I HAVE TO SAY OUT OF ALL THE HOTELS WE STAYED IN………

WAS MY FAVORITE.THE COLORFUL ROOM.

Tiles on the floor.

THE VIEW ACROSS THE PIAZZA!

THE CHURCH BELLS RINGING EVRY MORNING!

THE CHOIR SINGING from inside the church on SUNDAY!

The garden area and the EASY PARKING right in front!

IT REALLY WAS A LITTLE GEM.

The food wasn’t bad either………….

I always found a PERCH to sit on!

And in this case a plant to match!

The GORGEOUS ITALIAN went for PASTA as his first course; where I went for the octopus salad.

40 YEARS NEXT JULY!

I do BELIEVE there were a few betting against us in 1986, meaning it wouldn’t LAST!

I am HOLDING ON AS LONG AS I CAN!

DO YOU KNOW HE IS BASICALLY, THE SAME WEIGHT AS WHEN WE GOT MARRIED?

I cannot even begin to DESCRIBE MY HAPPINESS with this bread!

ALL the restaurants had it and it was GLUTEN FREE!

The brand is SCHAR.

I thought it was German, but I have a READER HERE on the blog who has found it in ARIZONA and she sent me the packaging which says MADE IN ITALY!

SO, now I’m on a HUNT for it here in CALIFORNIA!

I ATE EVERY LITTLE CRUMB OF IT AT EVERY MEAL JUST BECAUSE I COULD!

I want to say this was HALIBUT, but I could be wrong. It was delicious whatever it was…………

LEMON GLUTEN FREE PASTA.

ICE CREAM………..better known as GELATO!

I THOUGHT THIS WAS FUNNY, because you HARDLY EVER SEE AN OVERWEIGHT ITALIAN!

One of the walled entrances to the city of MARSALA.

We would take an after dinner stroll every night to help the DIGESTION!

Very warm and always people in the streets.

This is one of MY FAVORITES photos I took on our trip.

He is dressed in BLUE just like the church door!

How could this photo be better in my opinion?

(If THAT TREE was not in a PLASTIC POT!)Is the correct answer!

THE THINGS ONE STUMBLES UPON IN SICILY is a COMPLETE DELIGHT to the SENSES!

That is a WRAP on MARSALA and the tiny island of MOZIA.

I keep losing a bunch of YOU READERS after these travel posts…………

BUT I WILL KEEP ON AS A FEW OF YOU ARE ENJOYING THEM and it helps me RE-LIVE the trip!

I DO HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU!WHAT MADE YOU FOLLOW ME IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Antiques, fashion, style for older women, decor?

TELL ME WHY YOU READ ME!

I NEED TO KNOW!

I thought this was worth mentioning as the FOOD PRICES have NEVER BEEN SO HIGH here in CALIFORNIA!

I sent THE ITALIAN for fruit and his bread.

THREE ITEMS TOTALED $35.04.

Five yellow peaches were $12.38 end of season.

Green grapes $14.67 for almost three pounds. The bag you see below.

ACME ITALIAN BATARD bread $7.99.

YES, this was the EXPENSIVE GROCERY STORE which I seldom shop at, but with good reason it was close to his other errand.Plus, they get LOCAL fruit.Which being the end of the season I thought would be a TREAT.As I LOVE SUMMER FRUIT!

The grapes had a little flavor and the peaches less…………

The BREAD I FOUND TO BE OUTRAGEOUS!

IN FACT, I WAS DOWN RIGHT MAD that I SENT HIM THERE!

QUICK HEALTH REPORT!

The EYE EPISODES are still GONE!THE ATLAS IS HOLDING!It has been FIVE MONTHS NOW!

THE HEART Failure is still working OVERTIME as the BLOOD PRESSURE is hovering below 100 now.

I cannot take the heart meds if it’s not over 100.TOP NUMBER.

LOW BLOOD PRESSURE makes you light headed and tired all the time.

THE LUNGS are acting UP!

THE COUGH from THE LADY WINDERMERE or better known as NON TUBERCULOSIS BACTERIUM is GETTING WORSE to the point I’m vomiting daily.

THE BACK IS MUCH BETTER FINALLY!

IAM NOT A JOY TO BE AROUND.

In fact, I will be the first one to tell you I am CRANKY!

Other than that I am getting a FEW DRAWERS CLEANED OUT!

HIP HIP HOORAY!

NOPE!I donot think that was even on the menu!!!
Marsala is by the sea…….therefore,FISH is the main event! The fish in Italy is so much better than here in California.I never liked fish growing up.Over there is has FLAVOR!And they do not cover it up with sauces…………….
I ate fish 90 percent of the timeout can not say for sure.
The liquor was SOLD there but I cannot say I saw chicken on the menu!!

That nunnery is utter gorgeousness. I will continue reading your blog for as long as you decide to write it. Can’t really remember why I followed you. I think you started commenting on my blog first and I got curious. Your blog is always delightful because it’s so varied. I hate it when people post the same things all the time. Variety is the spice of life and your blog is as varied as it gets, which I 100% love.

Having been to Italy, I enjoy seeing your vacation photos. I think that the food in Italy is thee best – probably because I am half Italian. I’m glad that your have not had an eye episode in five months. I cannot remember how or when I started following you – but I do believe that The Preppy Empty Nester sent me to Ellie’s Have Some Decorum blog – and maybe I found your blog from your comments on Ellie’s blog (??). What a wild ride Ellie took us on for as long as she could – RIP. I started following the three blogs around the same time – and am fortunate to have met you and Ms. Clooney in person!

That would have been YOU at the time!I think I gained a few people from ELLIE’s BLOG as I have been told that over the years!Even here in this comment section which I did not know until recently!I WAS A BIG COMMENTER ON HAVE SOME DECORUM AND LOVED READING IT!Gosh, how many years has it been now?I’m thinking six is that possible? She put up a GOOD FIGHT all the way to THE END!I received a message from one of her inner circle not to attend the FUNERAL!Thought that was SAD and INTERESTING!As you know I went to her apartment in PARIS and brought her a big box of Macaroons only to be told she HATED THEM!!!I told her to give them to the HELP!SHE WAS ONE OF A KIND and had a BIG FAN CLUB!Her Mother sent me a lovely message at the end and I was VERY TOUCHED by that.

I have been following you since I think you started, or close to it!
I always enjoy your posts and find them very entertaining – antiques,
art, style for older women, decor, and travel. You do a wonderful job
of writing your blog and making it interesting.

I am wondering if some sort of computer algorithm could be
interfering with your reader list, or something internet-related.
    Just a thought….

      Hello SUSAN!
From the very beginning that’s a long time!!!Thank you for hanging in there!
No not an algorithm thing as it’s an email function. There are a few ways to sign up either on the blog itself on the HOME page under Subscribe or WordPress or Feedspot another delivery service! When my computer lady passed away a few years ago the lists did not get transferred over correctly by my new person!
Let’s just say she forgot to push a BUTTON!Poof GONE!I can see daily how many read and Open the blog.
But thank you for that idea!!!That is how the instagram works by algorithm.
Some days it’s a few hundred other days thousands!!!Which is sad as one has followers and wants those people to receive not people we areNot following as much!
Meanwhile the blog changed why I don’t recall now the reason from a dot NET TO A DOT BLOG!
      TheVintageContessa.blog
Is how you would google me now.
That was where the GOOF UP WAS!
Anyway I still have You and a few more so that is all I NEED as long as I’m relevant and people ENJOY IT!
      Many thanks for telling me!

Fabulous photos and details. I love pictures like the fellow in blue by the blue door. Sometimes the most serendipitous combinations present themselves! Love your floaty blue and white kaftan too! The food looks incredible- it mostly is in Italy! What a trip you had in spite of health issues.
I began reading you for over 50 fashion. You brought a daring individualistic version of dressing that I have always embraced. Your love of “things”, wearable and in your home that bring you such joy, is why I love to see your posts. Stay adventurous, and stay steady and resolved on your journey managing your health. And keep posting fabulousness!

I love seeing the travel pictures! There aren’t enough of them, as far as I’m concerned.
I have followed you for so long, that I don’t remember how I found you. It’s been over ten years, at least. I read you, because you’re relevant, interesting, and
gracious. I think you are one of THE most beautiful people on the planet—from inside to outside. And such STYLE such TASTE!!
I am so sorry about your health issues. It sounds trite to say, but that’s best I can do.
I pray for you. I want you to be well. You have soooo mush to offer.
Be as cranky as you need–you’ve earned it!

    hi Elizabeth,
I love seeing your travel photos, I hope you’ll keep posting them. They are the only way I’ll get to see Italy in the near future!
I buy the GF Schars (with an umlaut) bread at Safeway. My package says made in New Jersey. So, not sure if it’s the same as what you had in Italy, but in general their GF products are pretty good. Just FYI.
Stay healthy buddy. I hope to get up there to see you soon. So busy here, and I need to find a day when I can brave the traffic!
    Xo Heidi

But interesting that the Arizona bag says Made in Italy!?! You would think it would be the same wholesaler!
SAFEWAY!!Where in frozen or bread aisle?I must LOOK??
