MARSALA,SICILY

September 20, 2025 123 Comments

HOTEL CARMINE is a three star GEM.An old nunnery restored to host THE TOURIST.

Cruising the gardens………

Across the street from our hotel window.

See that RED SIGN on the building?

There is a house FOR SALE and I am ALWAYS INQUISITIVE!

THE MORNING SPREAD in THE NUNNERY!

CAN YOU GUESS WHO WENT CRAZY HERE?

What comes to YOUR MIND when you see this little balcony?

For me it is Romeo and Juliet!

RUINS IN MARSALA…………… in the middle of our walk through the town.

No garbage.

No grafiti.

THE SALT FARM. On the way to catch a ferry to MOZIA. A small island full of artifacts.I was in MY ELEMENT!A very good friend of THE ITALIAN told him he must take me there and HE WAS RIGHT!

The RED VELVET Venetian shoe belonged to a man on the ferry.

I thought that was an interesting choice for such a HOT DAY.

1921 archeological dig on the island of……..MOZIA.

FOUND TREASURE!

READ below for the history of this very small island.

A GREEK STATUE found on the island of MOZIA.

A MAN FROM THE 5th century BC.

They can tell how his arms were from the CARVED SHOULDER MUSCLES!

Found in 1979.

INCREDIBLE………..

YES, I would have LOVED to bring HIM HOME WITH US!

Todays Theater /Drama mask!

From the SIXTH century if I have my Roman numerals RIGHT?

Note there was a door at one time by the horizontal latch.

ARTIFACTS from MOZIA………..there were so many items found. It was as if you were wandering around in that period of history. They are STILL DIGGING!Below is a set of cosmetic tools I thought were FASCINATING!

WE WOMEN HAVE ALWAYS BEEN TRYING TO ENHANCE OUR BEAUTY!

KUDOS to the person who put this BACK TOGETHER!

There were cases and cases of these little pots!

BACK TO OUR NUNNERY, which I HAVE TO SAY OUT OF ALL THE HOTELS WE STAYED IN………

WAS MY FAVORITE.THE COLORFUL ROOM.

Tiles on the floor.

THE VIEW ACROSS THE PIAZZA!

THE CHURCH BELLS RINGING EVRY MORNING!

THE CHOIR SINGING from inside the church on SUNDAY!

The garden area and the EASY PARKING right in front!

IT REALLY WAS A LITTLE GEM.

The food wasn’t bad either………….

I always found a PERCH to sit on!

And in this case a plant to match!

The GORGEOUS ITALIAN went for PASTA as his first course; where I went for the octopus salad.

40 YEARS NEXT JULY!

I do BELIEVE there were a few betting against us in 1986, meaning it wouldn’t LAST!

I am HOLDING ON AS LONG AS I CAN!

DO YOU KNOW HE IS BASICALLY, THE SAME WEIGHT AS WHEN WE GOT MARRIED?

I cannot even begin to DESCRIBE MY HAPPINESS with this bread!

ALL the restaurants had it and it was GLUTEN FREE!

The brand is SCHAR.

I thought it was German, but I have a READER HERE on the blog who has found it in ARIZONA and she sent me the packaging which says MADE IN ITALY!

SO, now I’m on a HUNT for it here in CALIFORNIA!

I ATE EVERY LITTLE CRUMB OF IT AT EVERY MEAL JUST BECAUSE I COULD!

I want to say this was HALIBUT, but I could be wrong. It was delicious whatever it was…………

LEMON GLUTEN FREE PASTA.

ICE CREAM………..better known as GELATO!

I THOUGHT THIS WAS FUNNY, because you HARDLY EVER SEE AN OVERWEIGHT ITALIAN!

One of the walled entrances to the city of MARSALA.

We would take an after dinner stroll every night to help the DIGESTION!

Very warm and always people in the streets.

This is one of MY FAVORITES photos I took on our trip.

He is dressed in BLUE just like the church door!

How could this photo be better in my opinion?

(If THAT TREE was not in a PLASTIC POT!)Is the correct answer!

THE THINGS ONE STUMBLES UPON IN SICILY is a COMPLETE DELIGHT to the SENSES!

That is a WRAP on MARSALA and the tiny island of MOZIA.

I keep losing a bunch of YOU READERS after these travel posts…………

BUT I WILL KEEP ON AS A FEW OF YOU ARE ENJOYING THEM and it helps me RE-LIVE the trip!

I DO HAVE A QUESTION FOR YOU!WHAT MADE YOU FOLLOW ME IN THE FIRST PLACE?

Antiques, fashion, style for older women, decor?

TELL ME WHY YOU READ ME!

I NEED TO KNOW!

I thought this was worth mentioning as the FOOD PRICES have NEVER BEEN SO HIGH here in CALIFORNIA!

I sent THE ITALIAN for fruit and his bread.

THREE ITEMS TOTALED $35.04.

Five yellow peaches were $12.38 end of season.

Green grapes $14.67 for almost three pounds. The bag you see below.

ACME ITALIAN BATARD bread $7.99.

YES, this was the EXPENSIVE GROCERY STORE which I seldom shop at, but with good reason it was close to his other errand.Plus, they get LOCAL fruit.Which being the end of the season I thought would be a TREAT.As I LOVE SUMMER FRUIT!

The grapes had a little flavor and the peaches less…………

The BREAD I FOUND TO BE OUTRAGEOUS!

IN FACT, I WAS DOWN RIGHT MAD that I SENT HIM THERE!

QUICK HEALTH REPORT!

The EYE EPISODES are still GONE!THE ATLAS IS HOLDING!It has been FIVE MONTHS NOW!

THE HEART Failure is still working OVERTIME as the BLOOD PRESSURE is hovering below 100 now.

I cannot take the heart meds if it’s not over 100.TOP NUMBER.

LOW BLOOD PRESSURE makes you light headed and tired all the time.

THE LUNGS are acting UP!

THE COUGH from THE LADY WINDERMERE or better known as NON TUBERCULOSIS BACTERIUM is GETTING WORSE to the point I’m vomiting daily.

THE BACK IS MUCH BETTER FINALLY!

IAM NOT A JOY TO BE AROUND.

In fact, I will be the first one to tell you I am CRANKY!

Other than that I am getting a FEW DRAWERS CLEANED OUT!

HIP HIP HOORAY!

I started following you just before Ellie died. I was impressed and moved by your kindness to both her and Heather. I love your style, I loved Banksy, enjoy reading about the Italian, and enjoy seeing photos of your garden. I live in a house full of antiques. I was amazed at how high your prices for groceries are – ours here are very high so I look around a lot for bargains. I hope your blood pressure goes up a bit so you can take the medicines and I hope you can avoid a heart transplant.xo

    Hello Countessa,
Just keep doing what you’re doing. We need more beauty and fun in the world. Your blog is like chatting with an old friend.
Don’t take it too personally about people leaving
I think a lot of people are tired due to the current landscape in the world and are just taking a break from their devices…
    Wishing good health to you

“Your blog is like chatting with an old friend!”I think that is one of the MOST beautiful comments I have received as I LOVE that description and FEEL like I am chatting with FRIENDS!
THE CRICKETS were IN HARMONY LAST NIGHT!We dined in the backyard as it was warm and they were singing but when I walked to the trash can last night on the street for garbage day today THEY were TEN TIMES LOUDER!
I recently video taped the MUSICA for my SON and sent to him saying ,”The crickets are still here and doing a REALLY GOOD JOB!”

I actually have cut back on watching many of those I follow because I found I was spending hours on YouTube and social media enjoying it all for sure, but not getting anything done in my life. So, now I dedicate a period of time and when times goes off I turn off my pad.

I found you intriguing and inspiring from my first discovery, and have stayed ever since. Your attitude, outlook, belief system, the way you live your life, what you value, and the fact that you speak your mind to make you an amazing role model for all women – we, and Parnassus, are so fortunate to have access to your blog. I have sent up a prayer for your health situation to ease up, and send you healing and loving vibes and great good wishes, as Queen Elizabeth used to say.

Fabulous account of this segment of the trip and the photos. I am so happy that you and that good-looking husband of yours got to make this incredible trip.

Please, get better and meet me in Nashville for the next Antique and Garden Show.

I know I say it a lot, but I just love the way you dress when traveling. Not sure if it’s because you are statuesque, but the caftans make you look like a model! And they give you such an air of style and cool chic which isn’t easy in hot Italy. Do you think hard about what you will wear or does it come naturally to you? It’s not natural for me at all.

      HELLO MARJUN………………
      THE HEART IS BEATING FAST!!
THE BLOOD PRESSURE IS LOW.So, the heart try’s to compensate.
I check in every couple of weeks with the Cardiologist department with BP readings, symptoms etc…………if the BP goes below 100 I cannot take the heart meds or all of them.We are still adding heart meds so this is SLOWING ME DOWN!
Originally,I would have known in December if these medications were making the heart stronger. Now it will be pushed back.
Tests will be done to see if any progress has been made in the new year. The EJECTION FRACTION needs to come up.
If the medication does not work……….then I’m put on a LIST!!!
For a heart transplant.SO, you can see WHY I’M A BIT CRANKY!
I have been through ONE HEART SURGERY already in 2010 for a valve repair.
I did not POP BACK FROM THAT IT TOOK ME MONTHS!
I am very tired all the time.
GOOD LUCK with your SAVINGS!!!SICILY would be a different experience from the other two. What ever you pick it will be FABULOUS!

Hello Contessa, As usual, anything with history, ruins, or archaeological interest is my favorite. I love the way people in books and internet posts casually buy whole islands, entire floors of New York (or insert the name of any expensive city) apartment buildings, and the like. I agree with you it’s a pity that so many beautiful or interesting places ruin their looks with plastic, steel, or ugly concrete planters, trash cans, and the like. It’s the way the world is going, so enjoy the nice places while you can!

It’s been a while since I’ve been in touch and there’s a reason for that. Suffice it to say for now that I am undergoing treatment for a rather bad bout with multiple myeloma. My “barn conversion”, which is at leastlivable, but all improvements have ground to a stop while we work our way through the trials and tribulations and expenses of treatment. But you will be one of the first to know when I resume my project. Keep posting! Your posts truly do cheer me up and inspire me.

I love your travel posts. I get to see places that unfortunately I will never see in person. Your photos are excellent and give a good feel about where you are.
I started following you when I joined Instagram when you had Banksy. The video where he attempted to climb the stairs in your garden. Then your connection to Ari Cohen. I became fascinated with all the elegant women. I don’t have the skills you have like your decorating abilities and your gardening is spectacular. It’s fun because I feel like I know you a little which if you think about it is ridiculous since we have never met in person.

I’ve been reading your blogs, albeit irregularly, for many years. Personally, I like your travel blogs, and the last trip report from Sicily included some beautiful photos.

As for the price increases, they’re also outrageously high in Europe and rising month after month. Where this will lead ?

Not sure what directed me to your posts but I fell in love with the fact that you had a pig – Banksy. I find you delightful and very authentic. We all have health problems of one kind or another. I loved when you did your closet full of caftans! That was a fun journey. I love your travel tales. I may have even been in your shop at one time as I visited Mill Valley often in the past and perused whatever was within a 40 mile radius. The fact that when life throws you lemons you always manage to make lemonade! Very uplifting to me. Love you to bits.

I found you from reading Manger and scrolling down blogs she recommended and one was yours… as I think I’ve told you, I thought it was the cookbook author The Barefoot Contessa, but it was so much better… it was you : ) I can remember being enchanted from the first moment. It was like falling down Alice’s rabbit hole…so much to see, to think about, to laugh with– the color, fashion, decor, books, animals (all of them but especially Banksy), food and so much more. Your photos are gorgeous and your writing is so unique, I would know it anywhere. Full of zest, true blue emotions and observations… a voice that is filled with kindness and caring. It is proof that friendships can come from reading correspondence–letters in the old days–but never meeting in person. J’adore you, my friend… (and have loved your travelogues so, so much : ) XO

So nice to see more of your trip – it looked marvelous, and your room was a wonder! I love the painting/wall mural in your room. I think I began reading your blog years ago when I was guest-posting on 1010ParkPlace and Brenda followed your blog… or perhaps I began reading you because I followed Ari Seth Cohen from the beginning and learned about you there! I love reading/seeing photos about your gardens, your beautiful caftans and gowns, and your pets.
I’m sorry your health is giving you such a hard time. Is there a place like The Mayo Clinic out west that you could visit? My darling sister (like you) had multiple things going on that were beyond challenging – her doctor sent her to Mayo and they helped create a “cohesive game plan” for her return home to her doctors. I was first attracted to your maximalist home and garden. I stayed because you are interesting, your animals are cute and the Italian is also interesting. I also love your opinions and observations. You’re so open I feel like I know you and am concerned about your health. Please take care.

The price of groceries in Texas is about the same as California, even at the chains. Where is the outrage among magas? I’m sure it will go to extreme highs with ICE deporting all the farm workers and tariffs and border backups blocking imports from Mexico. Having a garden will be imperative for health and economics. I cannot imagine the future with JDVance and co buying up all the distressed farms. It’s looking bleak.

The mixture of antiques jewellery clothes and holidays is just right. I have been so interested in your Sicilian holiday as we plan to go there soon I hope. When we are on holiday we stroll about and stop for a coffee or glass of wine and look at a gorgeous view or funny little street. Just like you..How could anyone get bored with that? Nothing too organised ,just enjoying the place and the different people.
I do hope you are feeling better soon, do have plenty of rests with a good book in your garden, I’m sure that is a good cure. Love and best wishes from Judy in Brighton UK.

Ii love all your posts. Great delight in their diversity of subject. Some people live very narrow lives and have no curiosity or sense of adventure in their narrow world.
Of concern always is your health and the struggle you have , teaching us as we all fight our various health problems that we are not alone and the grace you live with all your problems.
You are a shining star for womankind ..love and hugs Jo

I shall “KEEP ON BOXING ON”!I LOVE THAT!
My Readers JO have helped me a lot over the years by mentioning names or telling me “HER MOTHER” had the same eye episodes as me………….THAT WAS ONE BIG MYSTERY!I lost a lot of precious time from those episodes.I remember I did not drive for 3 months as they scared me so.But that is CURED and today I go for a check up of the Cervical Spine and I already know what he will say!All is good!
