MY GARDEN in AUGUST.

August 14, 2023 117 Comments

AUGUST 10, 2023 in my GARDEN.

Photos taken by me wandering around about 7 am……….

With an OLD iPHONE.

BETTY showing off her profile!

This OAK LEAF HYDRANGEA was given to me years ago by a neighbor who was redoing her GARDEN!

The benefits of still having planting space!

I LOVE THE CONE SHAPE!

PLUS it has the two main colors I use in my garden.

Yellow and White.

This year this HYDRANGEA did not take off like normal!

MAYBE WE HAD TOO MUCH RAIN IN SPRING?

IT LOVES WATER…………..HYDRA means WATER RIGHT?

THE SIDE ENTRANCE which is mostly SHADE.

ABUTILON which attracts HUMMINGBIRDS.

Or INDIAN MALLOW.

We have had more HUMMINGBIRDS this year then in the past!

DOES not do well in the colder climates!

Fruit Trees are producing this year!

I SHOULD PICK THIS BEFORE A GORGEOUS CREATURE ABSCONDS WITH IT!

WE HAVE BEEN BLESSED WITH TWO!

ONLY TWO!

PLUMS.

A BENCH left over from the HEN HOUSE DAYS.

NOT REALLY USABLE.

AS IT IS BROKEN.

A birdbath I constantly find OFF CENTER!

CHICKEN COOP NO LONGER HAS RESIDENTS.

IT IS TWO STORIES AND COULD HOUSE BUNNIES OR BIRDS.

I HAD FORGOTTEN I HAD PLANTED THESE BULBS!

I LOVE WHEN THAT HAPPENS!

THE MOLES OR VOLES LOVE TO TUNNEL HERE!

SEE THE LOSE DIRT?

BRIDGE OF SIGHS…………..over the creek bed.

Composting on the RIGHT!

PENNY ROYAL the long green stem with purple.Smells heavenly especially when you walk on it!

A FRENCH BENCH that has decided to decompose in my garden………..

I paid a FORTUNE for it!

THE ITALIAN CAN RE-DO IT !

I MAY HAVE TO REMIND HIM A FEW TIMES!

ENTER THE VEGETABLE GARDEN.

BASIL STRAIGHT AHEAD.

Which will be CUT and DE-STEMMED for PESTO MAKING!

BASIL FOR PESTO.

WE MAKE PESTO FOR THE YEAR AND FREEZE IT.

IN FRENCH JAM JARS!

BE SURE TO PUT OLIVE OIL ON THE TOP BEFORE CAPPING;

AS THAT KEEPS THE MOLD AWAY!

THEN AFTER EACH USE.

A JAM JAR LIKE THIS CAN FEED TWO.

MANY TIMES.

NEVER ADD PARMESAN TO IT IF FREEZING!

THAT CAN BE DONE AT THE TABLE WHEN SERVING!

SO, EACH TIME YOU USE A HEAPING TABLESPOON OR A BIT MORE ADD OLIVE OIL TO COVER BEFORE PUTTING BACK IN THE REFRIGERATOR!

DOES THAT MAKE SENSE I HOPE?

WHAT YOUR THUMB NAIL WILL LOOK LIKE AFTER DE-STEMMING BASIL.

BLACK FOR DAYS!

ZUCCHINI FLOWERS which is why we BUY ZUCCHINI PLANTS!

I HAVE A FUN STORY TO SHARE AND A RECIPE TOO.

I WAS TALKING TO MY FRIEND SALLY IN BELGIUM.WE KNEW EACH OTHER IN FLORENCE in the early 1990’s.I TOLD HER I NEEDED SOME RECIPES!

SHE SENT A LONG LIST THEN A FEW DAYS LATER SENT A VIDEO FROM INSTAGRAM.

IT WAS A MOTHER/DAUGHTER TEAM.

THE RECIPE LOOKED DELICIOUS AND THERE WAS SOMETHING FAMILIAR ABOUT THE MOTHER TO ME!I ASKED MY FRIEND SALLY IF THE MOTHER’S NAME WAS ANN?YES!IT WAS AND I SAID SHE LIVES IN MY TOWN!THE DAUGHTER WENT TO SCHOOL WITH MY KIDS……

WE LAUGHED AND SENT EXCLAMATION MARKS BACK AND FOURTH!

WHAT A SMALL WORLD!

THE DAUGHTERS INSTAGRAM IS A BIG DEAL WITH 723K FOLLOWERS!

IT is called MAXISKITCHEN.

https://www.maxiskitchen.com

She is also on YOUTUBE,TIKTOK and has an AMAZON STOREFRONT.

I HAVE MADE IT TWICE NOW AND IT IS DELICIOUS!

DIPPING THE ZUCCHINI FLOWERS INTO THE FLOUR,WATER AND SALT BATTER.

YOU CAN STUFF THEM WITH MOZZARELLA AND OR GOAT CHEESE.

ADD AN ANCHOVIE TOO!

OR SMALL PIECE!

LA CONTESSA in her GARDEN in the early morning hours.

Can you see the GREEN BEANS BEHIND ME?

WE CAN FEED OUR STREET!

BELOW OUR GREEN BEAN TUNNEL!

GREEN BEANS FOR DAYS……..

Please do NOT ask me the name of this rose as I planted it over 25 years ago and of course I THOUGHT I WOULD NEVER FORGET THE NAME!

I DID.

CAN YOU SEE THE TALL ORCHRE TOWER AT THE TOP?

THAT WAS FROM WORLD WAR TWO.

AN ALARM IF WE WERE TO BE BOMBED!

THE NEW CHAIN LINK FENCE IS OWNED BY THE WATER COMPANY!

THAT IS WHERE LAST YEAR A CAR CHASE ENDED UP IN MY BACK GARDEN UPSIDE DOWN!

THE DRIVER WAS DOA………….that means (if you were as slow as me) DEAD ON ARRIVAL!

I had the police with their GUNS drawn telling the two passengers to put their hands up.

ONE GUY WAS ABLE TO DO THAT!

TOO MUCH EXCITEMENT FOR ME!

THE COMPOST BIN.

THE GRATE ON TOP IS SO BETTY DOES NOT JUMP IN AND EAT THE FOOD THAT ENDS UP IN THERE.

WE COMPOST ALL OUR GARDEN LEAVES AND BRANCHES AND FOODS.

IT PRODUCES ENOUGH TO ENRICH THE SOIL IN THE VEGETABLE BINS AND FLOWER BEDS EVERY YEAR!

DO YOU KNOW YOU CAN COMPOST USED PAPER TOWELS?

YOU CAN !

AND THE RECYCLE CAN DOES NOT WANT YOUR USED PAPER PRODUCTS!

WHICH INCLUDES NAPKINS, PAPER TOWELS AND TISSUES!

ONCE THE COMPOST HAS BEEN DECOMPOSED IT IS MOVED TO THIS BIN FOR NEXT YEARS AMENDMENT.

BOLERO IS THE NAME OF THIS ROSE.

I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!

FRAGRANT AND PROLIFIC.

HOW MANY TIMES HAVE YOU HEARD ME SAY THAT?

TOO MANY!

BETTY MY ASSISTANT IN THE GARDEN!

BOUQUET FOR COMPOSTING………JUST AS BEAUTIFUL AS WHEN THEY FIRST ARRIVED!

TO ME ANYWAY!

ZUCCHINI RECIPE FROM https://www.maxiskitchen.com

SAUTEED ZUCCHINI:

2 TBSP BUTTER

1 CUP ONION,DICED SMALL

2 CLOVES GARLIC,MINCED

4 CUPS ZUCCHINI,SLICED IN THIN ROUNDS

1/2 TSP PEPPER

1/2 TSP SALT

1/2 TSP DRIED OREGANO

PIE PREP:

2 EGGS

1 CUP MOZZARELLA

1 CUP 4% COTTAGE CHEESE

2 TBSP FRESH BASIL,CHOPPED

3 TBSP FRESH PARSLEY,CHOPPED

2 TSP DIJON MUSTARD

1 PIE CRUST

FOR SERVING: FRESH PARSLEY, MINCED PARMESAN CHEESE GRATED ON TOP.

VEGAN MOTIFICATION:

SUB IN 2 CUPS VEGAN MOZZARELLA FOR THE MOZARRELLA AND COTTAGE CHEESE.

SUB IN OLIVE OIL FOR THE BUTTER AND LEAVE OUT THE PARMESAN.

1.PRE HEAT OVEN TO 375F DEGREES.

2.IN A POT OVER MEDIUM HIGH HEAT ,SAUTE ONIONS AND GARLIC IN BUTTER UNTIL ONIONS ARE TRANSLUCENT (2-3) MIN.ADD THE ZUCCHINI,SALT AND PEPPER AND OREGANO AND SAUTE STIRRING OFTEN FOR 6-8 MINUTES UNTIL ZUCCHINI IS TENDER BUT NOT COMPLETELY FALLING APART AND MOST OF THE LIQUID HAS COOKED OFF(IF THERE IS A LOT OF EXCESS LIQUID,DRAIN IT OFF)TURN OFF THE HEAT.

3.IN A SEPARATE LARGE BOWL,BEAT THE EGGS AND MIX MOZZARELLA,COTTAGE CHEESE,BASIL AND PARSLEY; ADD THE ZUCCHINI MIXTURE AND STIR TO COMBINE.

4.SPREAD THE PIE CRUST INTO A PIE PAN AND BRUSH THE DIJON MUSTARD IN THE INSIDE OF THE PIE SHELL;POUR IN THE FILLING AND ARRANGE ZUCCHINI ROUNDS ON THE TOP SO IT LOOKS PRETTY.

5.BAKE 35-40 MINS UNTIL A KNIFE COMES OUT CLEAN FROM THE CENTER(IF THE EXPOSED EDGE OF THE PIE CRUST LOOKS LIKE IT’S OVER BROWNING YOU CAN COVER IT WITH FOIL.)

6. LET COOL FOR 5 MINUTES TO SET AND THEN SPRINKLE WITH PARSLEY AND PARMESAN AND ENJOY!

RECIPE MAKES 1 PIE SERVES 4-6 PEOPLE.

PREP TIME 25 MINUTES PLUS 40 MINUTES TO COOK.

(CONTESSA ASSUMES THEY ARE USING ITALIAN PARSLEY VERSES REGULAR PARSLEY.)

PS. THIS BOWL OF PESTO MADE 42.5 JARS OF PESTO WHICH WILL TAKE US TO NEXT SUMMER IF MY YOUNGEST SON DOESN’T GRAB TOO MANY OUT OF THE FREEZER THROUGH OUT THE YEAR!

WHICH I LOVE!

I FELT FALL IN THE AIR ON SATURDAY WHICH IS WAY TOO EARLY HERE IN CALIFORNIA FOR ME!

I AM GOING TO KEEP THINKING IT IS SUMMER AND MY NEXT POST WILL BE ON CAFTANS AND HOW I WEAR THEM THROUGH OUT THE YEAR!THIS IS A REQUEST FROM MY DEAR FRIEND SANDRA SALLIN.AS SHE HAS FINALLY GOT THE BUG!

THEY ARE COOL FOR THAT Los Angeles HEAT AND SHE IS LOVING THEM!

AS A FOLLOW UP THE SLEEP APNEA MACHINE MINE; NOT THE TEST ONE I HAD FOR THREE WEEKS IS WORKING!I FEEL BETTER OVER ALL NOT AS TIRED.RECALL THAT DAY I HAD PHYSICAL THERAPY IN THE MORNING FOR THE NECK/ATLAS……..WELL HE TOLD ME THE ATLAS DOES NOT MOVE!!!

I KID YOU NOT!

WHY HAVE I BEEN GOING TO A CHIROPRACTOR FOR THREE YEARS TO GET MY ATLAS ADJUSTED AND HE SHOWS ME WITH MY FINGERS WHERE ITS OUT OF ALIGNMENT?I ALWAYS FEEL BETTER AFTERWARDS BUT WANT TO KNOW WHY THIS HAPPENS AND IF THERE ARE SOME EXERCISES THE PT CAN GIVE ME.

HE GAVE ME THREE EXERCISES TO START WITH AND COULD NOT ANSWER MY QUESTION AS TO WHY!HEADACHES, NECK PAIN AND MORE EPISODES ARE COMING FAST AND FURIOUS LETS HOPE I JUST HAVE TO WORK THROUGH IT…………..at this point I have nothing to lose.

THAT AFTERNOON I SAW THE SLEEP APNEA GAL.THIS WAS MY THRID VISIT AND SECOND PERSON TO TELL ME I REALLY DIDNOT NEED THE SLEEP APNEA MACHINE!

I KID YOU NOT!

REASON BEING A HAVE MILD SLEEP APNEA (STOP BREATHING 8.4 TIMES AN HOUR).

I TOLD HER AS SHE HAD NO IDEA THAT I AM IN HEART FAILURE AND IT IS HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! (THAT WOULD REQUIRE LOOKING INTO THE COMPUTER!!!AND DOING A LITTLE RESEARCH ON ME BEFORE GIVING ME THE REAL DEAL MACHINE.)

SHE SAT UP STRAIGHT IN HER CHAIR AND GOT A BETTER ATTITUDE.

I ALSO FOUND OUT MY LUNG DOCTOR WORKS WITH THE SLEEP APNEA CLINIC AND I ADORE HIM!SO THAT WAS MY KICK OF JOY FOR LAST MONDAY!

HE IS KIND, SUPER TALL,RESPONDS TO EMAILS IN ONE DAY and LISTENS!

SO,I AM GOOD TO GO IN THIS DEPARTMENT!

Thank you for the tour of garden, it has so much character.

Oh, my! What a delicious garden! Thanks for sharing your back garden in its entirety, LA CONTESSA. I had no idea you had a bridge and creek in your back yard. Beautiful flowers and greenery and what a cute assistant you have. The pesto sounds delicious and your Italian looks very happy to make it. Delight in these last weeks of summer. I do find it goes all too quickly. Fall will be here in a blink!

    Hi Elizabeth,

Just now catching up! I love your garden and flowers SO much. Everything is beautiful and I enjoyed seeing it. The mystery rose does look like a David Austin rose but i cannot figure out which one. Do you ever get the Austin rose catalog? Beautiful photos to dream over on cold or mizzly winter days and nights. And I think it is free, too! I am sorry to learn of heart failure. My mother lived a very long and productive life for years after being diagnosed with it. And buon compleanno – a little bit late but the party looks spectacular – I love the opera panels! Here, I finished our book about our park’s history, and an article re same and now am restoring order to house. Between smoky days, extreme heat, bad storms, the good days of summer seem especially short.

I love your garden…so many wonderful plants….. I have a very tiny 6 year old garden with lots of wonderful roses……anchored with four Westerland’s climbing everywhere and two Sally Holmes that are amazing …….and two paniculata Hydrangeas….plus tons of other plants I enjoy or want to try.
I also have a CPAP machine that I cannot leave home without! I have had it for five years. I do not use the Darth Vader mask…..I have a small part that fits just under my nose with head gear that keeps it in place. …I wear a pony tail or bun at night so the strap has an anchor. When I read that Carrie Fisher(Princess Leia) died of undiagnosed sleep apnea I could not see the sleep doc fast enough! I am 75 and still traveling and take my travel machine EVERYWHERE!
Love and luck to you….. keep gardening and entertaining all of us.

      HI DEBBIE,
YES THOSE ARE CALLED PILLOWS THAT GO INTO YOUR NOSE!THEY TRIED THAT ON ME FIRST BUT IT WAS A NO GO.THEN WE TRIED THE FULL FACE MASK AND THAT TOO WAS A NO GO FOR ME!THE LAST OPTION I WANTED WAS A CHILDS MASK IF THERE IS SUCH A THING BUT SHE SAID IT WOULD BE TOO SMALL FOR ME……..SO I ENDED UP WITH JUST A NOSE MASK!I HAVE DEVELOPED A SORE ON THE NOSE WHERE THE MASK SITS IN BETWEEN MY NOSTRILS.NOT FUN BUT GOING AWAY WITH VASELINE APPLICATION.I TOO FOUND TO WEAR A PONYTAIL OR NOW A WIDE HEADBAND HELPS HOLD THE STRAPS IN PLACE WITHOUT HURTING ME.MY HEAD IS VERY SENSITIVE TO THE SQUARE LABEL IN BACK OF MY HEAD.
NO DARK VADOR MASK AND I HAD NO IDEA SHE DIED OF SLEEP APNEA………..EVERYONE SHOULD BE TESTED AT SOME POINT IT WOUL D SEEM AS A LOT OF US ARE ON THESE MACHINES!.

Forgot – beans – I steam mine. Loose less nutrients so I have been told. Have beans in steamer – bring water to a boil for a couple of mins then turn off the heat and continue steaming.
For a number of years I used to enter my beans in a garden fair and they would win FIRST prize. Not easy finding 6 beans that are same colour – length – width – thickness etc! The Italian should enter a fall fair if there is one in your area in September!

Hi Elizabeth! These are beautiful and magical photos of your garden and life, just lovely. I love those rusted metal candelabras on your gates!!! I collect rusty metal garden things too. Old baskets, urns, etc. My husband gave me a rusty metal cat silhouette one year, but it’s put away as it scares the birds out back and makes the dogs walking by out front go nuts, ha. Thanks to Betty for showing her profile so expertly.
It’s fun to see what you can grow up north, that won’t grow or do as well down here. It’s quite a difference. It has been hot here and I will admit I did write in my calendar on Saturday “Felt a tiny touch of Fall in the air, hooray”.
Delightful to see all the basil jarred up next to the Italian basil master. What a good tip, not adding the parmesan before freezing. My basil was eaten by the squirrels this year, I saw one sitting right in the pot munching away after I’d just shooed it away, ha. They also got to our tomato plant first and the raccoon finished off the job, eating the only remaining ripe tomatoes a week ago, oh well! Never had to deal with squirrels in 20 years, until this rainy year. I plan to try that zucchini pie!
So many photos and thoughts, I could comment on every one. That DOA car wreck, oh my what an event!
    Take care!
    🙂

    Hi there CONTESSA
So odd the post did not arrive in my inbox until this morning!
LOVE LOVE LOVE the garden! Thanks for sharing! Birthday guests must have had an amazing time celebrating in it!
The basil – never seen it that long! Here’s to the Italian’s green thumb.
Hydrangeas – these I have in my garden – some started by clippings = so easy to do. Did you know if you bring the flowers inside and they start to wilt – they are NOT finished – you plunge the flower head in cold water and then put the stem back in the vase that has HOT water (only an inch or 2) viola they come back and last another week! I also recut the stem. I was so impressed when I tried this.
Drs – Years also one told me I had a polyp in my throat – sent me off to the specialist – he looked – polyp? There is NO polyp!
The birds and bees would have a grand time in the garden.
Theodore must have some favourite spots to curl up in the garden.
Here in BC = no plastic bags – some shops have paper. One place wants to use compostable ones – but govt is saying NO to that.

Have to love the medical profession, doesn’t matter where in the world. I recently visited my doctor to look at a sore throat I had for 4 weeks. She said it all looks good, not red and your tonsils are not swollen. I replied with well that’s good since I had them removed when I was six. No idea what she was looking at..

I used to garden so much more when the kids were little. Growing our own strawberries, pumpkins, and watermelon was magical. I miss it. Tried a few tomato varies and a zucchini but I think my soil needs more attention as it did not produce very much. Love seeing the pesto being prepped. The fragrance was divine I’m sure.

The glowers, I know, are all you…I have a few oak leaf hydrangeas and love them, I have two of the regular kind, too…I never know what color they’ll be from one year to the next. This year, one’s punk and the other is blue. But the oak leaf are always a dependable white.

Love, love it all. What a joy to go walking around your garden and kitchen. It’s all so wild and beautiful. How did that zucchini dish taste. It was beautiful. Do your string beans taste good. It’s been a long time since I tasted a really good string bean. It was a real treat!

THE ZUCCHINI DISH WAS DELICIOUS!I HAVE MADE IT TWICE NOW!
ALSO AN EASY RECIPE TO FOLLOW…………
I WANT TO DIVE INTO MAXISKITCHEN MORE IN DEPTH AS IT ALL LOOKS SIMPLE AND FRESH!
THE SECRET TO STRING BEANS IS NOT TO OVER COOK THEM WHICH WE AMERICANS TEND TO DO I THINK!
THE ITALIAN LIKES THEM COOKED FOR 3 MINUTES IN BOILING WATER I PREFER 4 MINUTES.ADD SOME VINEGAR TO THEM WHEN YOU SERVE AND OR OLIVE OIL!
      CAFTANS UP NEXT FOR YOU!

    Dear Contessa,
What an abundantly beautiful August garden you have there. You know I’m in awe of that Pesto making process! I do have a question for you about that; once the jars are filled do they go straight into the freezer?

I have a few caftans that I love to look at but really haven’t felt comfortable with wearing them,YET…So give us a good tutorial and inspire me to get them into my weekly wardrobe choices!

I will definitely be giving that recipe a go! I love anything with zucchine. This is a wonderful post with lots and lots of inspiration!

      TO ANSWER YOUR QUESTION YES!
AS STATED POUR A LAYER OF OLIVE OIL OVER THE TOP MAKE SURE TO COVER PESTO.THEN PUT TOP ON AND PLACE IN FREEZER!
TRA LA…….so easy and handy through out the year!
      XOXO
