SCARY STUFF and BEAUTY

October 23, 2024 67 Comments

HELLO FRIENDLY VISITORS!

I will give you the LOW DOWN of OCTOBER in a few words and a few photos of course my favorite pastime!

OCTOBER 1, 2024

My SECOND BORN SON had a BIRTHDAY!

35 years old!

HOW ON EARTH DID THAT HAPPEN?NO photos of that event as there was none!Nor did I see HIM that day!He was ten pounds 2 ounces at birth born at 8pm.My doctor was JEWISH and he was THRILLED because it was a holiday for him and he could get home to finish the FEAST!

OCTOBER 3, I had a HEART PROCEDURE in an operating room!FASCINATING as they play loud music and there were over 8 people in the room each with a different job.ALL INCREDIBLY NICE I might add.I had a RIGHT HEART CATHETERIZATION.They go into your body with a camera………..they entered through my neck as oppose to my wrist or groin where they had prepped me!Who knows why but it did not hurt!I was given a low dose of FENTANYL( Oh MY GOD THE BORDER DRUG!) as they were going to give me nothing but I told the surgeon I’m a bit of a sissy!Pain and I aren’t BUDDIES in anyway.I have ZERO PAIN TOLERANCE!Just the way I was MADE.

The outcome of this PROCEDURE is they want to do MORE TESTS!

So, I wait for that to happen.

YES, all a bit nerve racking for me as I wait.

I am home alone on a weekend in October and trip over the carpet, footstool and land palms down on my brick floor. The first thought was anything broken? No, I deduced right away as the pain was bad, but not excruciating.I was able to pull myself up onto a chair after a few minutes or so.

First thoughts were anything broken? How do I reach my phone?Who will find me here on the floor?

THE FEAR WAS THERE as I had damaged myself.

Days later I am still dealing with awkward pain.

This photo above was about 10 minutes after the FALL.

What you donot see here are my toes and the bottom of my Right foot!

The bruising came out days later and it was BAD.

The first few nights I couldn’t even sleep with a sheet on my feet!

I would scream out in the night in pain.

The feet were DRY as I kept a support hose knee high on the first three days and at night to control the pain along with Tylenol. No wonder I couldn’t walk straight with all this bruising on the bottom of my foot which I discovered days later……..I am still LIMPING 12 DAYS later.

That white dryness has DISAPPEARED THANK GOODNESS!YUCK!

SO lucky, I did not break a BONE.As I am in full on Osteoporosis.

Eight days after I discover a bruise on my HIP which does not hurt at all.

The bruises just keep POPPING UP!

The GORGEOUS BEAUTIFUL KNEE.BOTH LOOK LIKE THIS.

BELOW DAY 11……….I know I need a PEDICURE but not ready for anyone to touch my little TOES!

The yellow bruises means its getting better……….

The white stuff on my toenail? What is that? That is a NEW ODDITY FOR ME!

OCTOBER 17, ONWARDS TO THE BEAUTY PART!

I headed to the San Francisco FALL SHOW in an UBER.

AFTER MUCH DEBATE we left as his phone was not giving him the directions!

He was from EGYPT,which was a place I always wanted to visit!ALL my UBER DRIVERS are IMMIGRANTS which I LOVE as I get to ask questions while traveling to my destination. He told me I need TO GO!

I was able to direct him to FORT MASON where the show was exhibiting.

(At least I have-not forgotten my way around the city!)

With traffic and a meet up for lunch; I was a bit RUFFLED, so I asked to get out of the UBER before I should have. Therefore, I had to walk a bit of a distance on my achey foot.DUMB ME!

I meet up with this woman!

This is LINDA.

HER INSTAGRAM is worth a PEEK………..COSGROVEFINEARTS.

She recently had an exhibit at Berdorf Goodmans in New York!

SHE IS A PAINTRESS! SHE PAINTS BEAUTIFULLY!

Look at those CAMEO’s she turns into rings.

Between her and me we knew a FEW PEOPLE AT THE SHOW!

ALWAYS A THRILL TO MEET PEOPLE AND SEE PEOPLE YOU KNOW FROM YOUR PAST!

This AMAZING HAND PAINTED Desk was from SICILY!

A place high on my list to see………….

The Italian is talking about a trip in the SPRING TIME!

Let’s NOT GET TOO EXCITED YET!

MY VIEW AT LUNCH besides Linda and her reliquary necklaces!

See that leather stool on the RIGHT?

There were TWO of them.

Those were my FAVORITE ITEMS I would have purchased had I had an extra $39,000.00 for the pair!

Guess where they came from?

I will give you ONE GUESS!

TUSCANY, that region in ITALY were we LIVED YEARS AGO.

We wandered around and had a nice lunch. Then went to see a lecture with WES GORDAN and AERIN LAUDER. The grand daughter of Estee Lauder cosmetics and Wes Gordan is the CREATIVE DIRECTOR for Carolina Herrera couture. They both share the same Interior Decorator! Both shared snippets of their lives and stories which I always find interesting.Estee, allowed her granddaughter to order multiple desserts at THE PLAZA HOTEL when they would lunch as a young girl!

Before the lecture I spied another INTERIOR DECORATOR who I knew would be there and thought I bought tickets to her TALK.Alas, somehow I bought the wrong tickets on the wrong day so MISSED THAT!She kindly received me with me tapping on her shoulder and gave me a BIG HUG.We have been following each other for YEARS on INSTAGRAM and we both LOVE COLOR!Note the theme of the show was BLACK & WHITE but we both got our own DASH of COLOR in our OUTFITS and accessories! She has written a BOOK called WANDERLUST a few years back ,which I ENJOYED SO VERY MUCH.

YOUR CONTESSA AND MICHELLE NUSSBAUMER at the SFFALL SHOW in OCTOBER 2024.I was THRILLED TO MEET HER AND HER ASSISTANT WHO SO GRACIOUSLY SNAPPED A PHOTO OR FOUR FOR ME!

Her RED LIPSTICK IS FABULOUS!

MINE IS NON EXISTENT!

I must learn to RE-APPLY after LUNCH!(Funny story as a child it would embarrass me to watch my mother apply lipstick in public with the mirror compact etc.I have never done it in public.I’m okay going to a restroom and putting it on if NO ONE IS IN THERE!)

So, how is your OCTOBER evolving?

I am reading STANLEY TUCCI’s latest book WHAT I ATE IN ONE YEAR and am LOVING IT!I made his MINESTRONE soup yesterday and have to say I LOVED THAT TOO!

ALSO,I READ FIFI O’NEILLS latest book SOULFUL COTTAGE and enjoyed those words and photographs very much.Poor FIFI has survived TWO HURRICANES within days of each other and is dealing with LOADS of CLEAN UP!Fallen trees etc……….she needs HELP financially and has given her VENMO account on her INSTAGRAM.I believe she is 78 years old and had NO ELECTRICITY FOR 12 DAYS!Therefore NOT ABLE TO WORK.SO, if you have VENMO or can HELP HER PLEASE MAKE CONTACT WITH HER at her EMAIL.

fificoconut@me.com

HER INSTAGRAM NAME IS MISSFIFI2610

I KNOW THIS WASNOT EASY FOR HER TO ASK FOR HELP.So, I’m spreading the word.

I apologize for not linking the instagram accounts but am not able too at this time.

SPY the TAIL of TIGRE amongst the cutting boards?

Seems he brought a mouse into the CASA and that is where he took refuge!

Wish me LUCK!!!

AS THE ITALIAN heads to bed he saw this and snapped a PHOTO for me!

I am SO LUCKY when it comes to PETS and their ability to SHARE.

I shared a transport vehicle this week at the car dealership and was the last to get inside.Do you think the other two passengers said HELLO?They were both staring at their phones.I DID!The rest of the trip was made in SILENCE.I tried to make conversation……..but the phones were MORE INTERESTING!

I took a walk this morning after dealing with a few THINGS of IMPORTANCE just to clear my head and see if I could put weight on that foot. The walk was not long but I did it and while I was walking I passed a woman.Do you think she looked at me or made eye contact we were inches apart!I SAID,”MORNING!”

She continued to look at THE GROUND.

I am not going to ask YOU what the heck has happened as I know what has happened.

Let’s HOPE we can PUSH a Re-start soon!

MORE LAUGHS,MORE SMILING and MUCH MORE LIVING!AS WE ENTER THE WINTER SEASONS…………..CREATE JOY DAILY!

I ADORE HEARING FROM YOU BELOW……..keep on SCROLLING DOWNWARDS.

A BIG HUG,

XXX

    Hi Elizabeth,

Oh my! I forgot to respond about your surgery and your fall! Hope the outcome of the heart surgery was good. Please let us know!

What an ugly fall you had! Hope it’s all healed now. As we get older it does take longer to heal from falls, etc.

    Sending healing love to you!

    Hello dearest!

Golly, your wounds look gruesome, you poor thing!! I hope you are on the mend with no lasting effects. I tripped up in the street last year landing on hands and knees, like you, without your very weird foot bruises, but now have a scar under my knee and a lump at the top of my tibia, which doesn’t hurt but means I can’t kneel down easily any more. Not that I do, for once down, the getting up is not really graceful, hahah!

So wonderful to see photos of you out and about at the Antiques Fayre, meeting like-minded friends and having the opportunity to Accessorize! So reminiscent of the sort of photos I enjoyed on your blog when I first found you. May this mean you are getting back into your old groove again!

Oh, my goodness LA CONTESSA. You have lots of news for October and it isn’t even over yet. I’m so sorry about your fall. It sounds as though you are recovering well at least. The fall show looks spectacular and you and Linda look beautiful. Good to have that operation behind you and it will be good to get the tests done and results. Hopefully that will not take too long. Sicily! Wouldn’t that be a fabulous trip for you and the Italian!!
Always nice to hear about the books you are reading. I am a Tucci fan as far as his acting but haven’t read any of his books yet.
Tigre’s tail looked like it was part of the wooden cutting boards like an added feature. LOL so cute. The picture of he and Betty snuggled is precious.

P.S. While most people in Canada will return a “hello” some do not. Of those who do not, about half are too busy walking and listening to music over air pods so don’t even hear you. Others have cheerfully jumped in and helped me retrieve my recycling/garbage/compost bins. I bought a beautiful cane from Italy [no duty (due to the Canada EU Free Trade agreement), 30% off on sale, free shipping]. It is exactly like one I bought heavily discounted years ago with a silver coloured (pewter) duck head and shiny black shaft. Just as I reached the sidewalk the other day I dropped it and a passerby raced over and picked it up for me. I highly recommend a cane — see Roberto Cavignini. I ordered it on a Sunday, my initials were engraved on it Monday, it was shipped on Tuesday. It was funny. It went by Fed Ex — it went from Italy to Memphis (just before Hurricane Helene). On Thursday, someone in Memphis accidentally sent it back to Italy. At midnight Thursday, it was sent back to Memphis where it must have been put immediately back on the flight up here because I had it on Friday. I’ve noticed that people are much more solicitous when I have the cane!

What a beautiful photo of you at the show!! Oh, I’m so sorry to hear about your fall. Hopefully, any tendon damage will heal soon! I am busy decluttering — a friend’s brother is doing the heavy lifting! It is great to have help, a helper who cheerfully follows instructions and in turn offers sound advice) I’m busy doing it outside and pray we have no snow for the next week! I should have done this years ago (when I was more physically able to do so) but something always came up! I am keeping a few treasures. I never realized how good it would feel. Once you get started, the paralysis disappears and you can find loving homes for your treasures!

Hi Elizabeth, Im glad to see you are healing from that nasty fall. They happen so quickly, and at our age-it takes a minute to figure out if we are actually OK. Just last night some friends and I were leaving a restaurant and my friend tripped while crossing the street–luckily I stood there in a white dress making sure the cars saw there was a body lying in the crosswalk- so no further damage was done. She limped back to our resort and we got her iced up. Just a small difference in the pavement was all it took. heal quickly!

So sorry to hear about your fall, Contessa! I’m glad you are on the mend. I, too, fell recently when I was out walking my new dog on a leash and she took off after a bunny and pulled me to the ground – I apparently hit the street pelvis-first, then elbows/hands, then knees. I figured this out due to the severity of the injuries. My massage gal informed me that I had dislocated two ribs as well. Although it could not have been helped, I felt like a goober and was glad no one was around to see it. Annoyingly, we must all be very aware of our footing at all times, as well as the path ahead.

The antique show looked fun, and I’m happy to see that you met a few friends. Your little Tigre is adorable!

May your tests reach a result that will inform your healing. I’ll be thinking of you.

You make it all sound amusing but I know that fall was painful. I wish you quick healing. I went through many, many heart tests five years ago and ended up having surgery to repair two valves. Luckily it could be done robotically and I can actually breathe now. I keep repairing and replacing parts (both knees) but apparently that’s the price I’m paying for still being here at almost 75. You’ll get through all this!

    Hi Elizabeth,
Oh oh oh my goodness. You were so very fortunate that you did not break any bones, and I hope you have no fractures. Welcome to the falling club. A club you don’t want to be a member of. I took a fall on September 23rd. On the cement in front of Walgreens.
I took my eyes off of looking down, I did not see the slant down and the next thing I knew I could not get up. My hit was right below my knees. Still recovering.
I have fallen four times, two times running, one time hiking. Now I’m super duper careful, almost paranoid. I was so lucky that my Honey Bear was in the SUV thank goodness. I was so embarrassed when I fell, teary eyed. I could not have gotten up by myself. A young girl came to my rescue.
You take care of yourself, your feet look like they are very painful. Your toenails must be bruised too.
Take TLC of yourself. I’m surprised you are okay walking.
Give yourself a big warm hug.

Hello Contessa, How terrible for you to suffer that fall! I hope that the bruises are healing. You were lucky that your injuries were limited. For a couple of years now I have been trying to keep paths totally clear, both in Taiwan and in Cleveland, although sometimes I let my standards slip a little, after which I severely rebuke myself. I know you love clutter and things as much as I do, but there comes a time to be practical.
    .
Linda Cosgrove seems a kindred spirit. I loved looking through that website–some of her artwork is pretty surreal. I am sending that photo of her with the cameo rings to my sister, who will appreciate both her style and her jewelry.
    .
Please take it easy for a bit and get better, then tell us about your new adventure.

Well, they don’t call October a fall month for nothing. I too took a fall walking my dog and tripping over a raised corner of walkway. Fell on my face. Two nice gentlemen boosted me up and offered a ride home.
I was shaking like a leaf but declined their offer. I walked (slowly) home with my shoulders back. I was amazed that I did not break a single bone. Bruise on right arm and left knee. I might have had a mild black eye but with my eyebags who knows. Lol when I got home my husband asked if I was alright. I hadn’t called him and wondered how he knew I had fallen. I had walked home with grass stuck on my face!

Elizabeth, did you ask her what color of lipstick she was wearing? We need to know. I;m so glad you made it to the show. I’m sure it was great fun.

Also, you’re right you need some moisturizer.

I always say morning or hello on my walks. If it’s noisy I just lift up my phone and wave.

No, I didn’t ask her, but I should but you know the red leaks into my wrinkles so I can’t really wear red except those Bobby Brown crayons!! which I think I’ve been discontinued!!!

    My darling friend,
Your toes, the bottom of your feet, and your knee look a lot like mine after I missed a step in Greece in July. It’s been a long road of physical therapy and foot exercises I do every day. I tore the ligaments in my right foot and sprained my left ankle. A man in his early 40s fell in the exact same spot so while I’m sorry for him, I don’t feel like an old person. FYI, my toe still hurts like crazy when I bend it and there are some shoes… the pretty ones… I cannot wear. Hopefully it will all return to normal. You look fabulous in the photos! So happy you were able to go to the show in SF and see so many people you know. That’s the best medicine of all. Now about the mouse in the cutting boards…. Love, Brenda

Dear Brenda, that’s right you had that horrible fall also I can’t point my toes or move them so they think the tendons are ripped or sprained or something find out today!
Update on the mouse Betty got it. He saw it in the living room and we cornered it and I was able to pick it up and put it outside. All is well.!

Contessa what a terrible fall but so glad no broken bones. Looks like you had an amazing time at the Fall Show, and you went in spite of your fall.
Your courage and determination is unmatched. Best wishes.

    Cara Elizabeth,
So sorry to hear of your fall. So scary!! Thank goodness nothing was broken!! Hope you continue healing well.
The olive harvest had begun in our area, but has temporarily halted due to tons of rain. You may have heard of the flooding in Italy (and Europe, this fall). The draught, now sooooo much rain.

Sitting at the podiatrist office now waiting to hear about my foot. I think the tendons are damaged just what I needed to hear.!!

You met interesting people on this show and I love the interior design of Michele N’s house. She has great taste. As I wrote before, your fall doesn’t look good but at least your catheters didn’t hurt and I saw you have a long lifeline and a great love line (hand reading). What more can you ask for? Uber drivers are a story in themselves and visiting Egypt once in your life is a must. Highly recommended and you will feel like Cleopatra afterward. I wish you a speedy recovery and stay kind and nice even if other people don’t appreciate it. Kindness, politeness and more….It’s disappeared everywhere thank’s to the smart phones, computers etc. and now AI is waiting. Horror pur.

    Buongiorno Contessa!
You must look on the bright side: my (Italian) husband fell down the stairs in September and broke his ankle. A very nasty fracture, had to have an operation and I’ve been nursing him ever since. Very hard work!!
I do hope you’re feeling better now!

Dear dear Contessa! I’m so glad to hear you are healing up from the treacherous fall. We must be more careful with ourselves. I phoned a friend the other day and asked what she was doing and she said “ trying not to fall!” Love your post and Michelle is one of my favorite designers. Very unique perspective on decorating. You continue to heal and let’s enjoy life to the fullest!

You are one amazing woman, Contessa…beautiful, talented, gracious, and with an indomitable spirit. It’s a treat to follow what you have been up to, speaking of which, thank goodness you were able to get up from that bad fall and despite being banged up, had no broken bones. Here’s to a special trip in the spring for you and the Italian.

So sorry you had that nasty fall and glad nothing is broken. I don’t understand having your nose in devices constantly, I prefer to see what is going on around me. What scares me is the amount of parents with young children in prams and the parents on their phones instead of interacting with their children on the walk.

    Hi there CONTESSA
That’s great you were able to get to the fall show – it was so opulent. A visual treat. A fun-filled social outing for you!
Ouch re your fall – I wonder if taping like Brenda had done on her feet when she injured them in Greece would have helped.
Fentanyl – I was given that too when I had minor surgery. People here are still dying of overdoses. Scary.
We don’t hear anything here now on the news re the aftermath of the hurricanes – such an upheaval for people.
The animals are so content in your house.
Holiday in the spring (?) keep us posted.
Cell phones – I work at a theatre – live entertainment – there are a few people at each performance who can’t sit for 45 – 60 mins without looking at their cell phone. Not just 1x – but a few times! They should be focussed on the performance – but no – it’s time to look at the cell. Surely one should be able to wait until intermission.
It does surprise me at times when people do not say hello. Even on an airplane – how can someone sit down and not acknowledge their seat partner?

Your happy spirit shines in this post! Despite tests and falling you persevered and got out and I’m sure brought joy to many- at least the ones who didn’t have their noses in their phones. I always speak to people in passing and throw out a compliment. Why not? It’s the easiest way in the world to let someone know they are “seen” in this rush around world. Keep healing!

Dear Beth, thank goodness you’re OK and have soldiered on despite your tumble. Typical that it should happen when The Italian was away.
I’m so excited for you that there may be a trip to Italy in the Spring. Travel gets more challenging as we get older but it’s so worthwhile and gives you something to look forward too. Our boy was 40 in May and we will celebrate with him in Thailand over Christmas. It’s a shame you’re so far from Europe as I’d love to meet up! Sending love and hugs, xxx

Hi brave wonderful woman! I feel your pain….sort of. So sorry about your fall but you survived. Love your friendly spirit in spite of being ignored. Ignore THEM! I do wine tastings in Whole Foods, Gelsons and Total Wine & Spirits so I engage people all the time. They start to walk by my table but I won’t have it and call out (“would you love to taste some wine while you shop?”) Gets them every time. I have a lot of fun with these tastings. It can easily become a party because that is the mood I exude. I always greet people and yes people are stressed but interacting is what helps, at least that is what I believe. So don’t give up. I have a girlfriend who bought a house in Noto, Sicily and renovated it. Can’t wait to go there. Please take care of yourself. With much love.
