SYRACUSE AND ORTGIA

August 19, 2025 74 Comments

OUR TOUR GUIDE ARRIVING IN HIS APE in SICILY.

We all met in a PARKING LOT!

OUR MODE OF TRANSPORT FOR THE NEXT THREE HOURS!

I do not know why this photo is distorted!Do you see it that way?

AT LEAST IT MAKES MY ARM LOOK LEAN!

Unfortunately you can not see from here but the water is crystal clear!

Here is a better PHOTO of the CLEAR blue/green waters……..

A small beautiful church with a SAINT!

NOTE HOW SMALL SHE WAS.

SHE WAS BURIED INSIDE THE ALTER.

BASILICA SANTUARIO SANTA LUCIA.

Below I’m trying to show how tall she would have been with my leg.

Another distorted photo…………HUM BUG!Plus the DOUBLE CHIN IS ACTING OUT!

THIS WAS SAINT LUCIA’S TOMB.

Historic ROMAN and GREEK Park in SYRACUSE where they have modern art on display.

THE PARK IS QUITE LARGE.

PARCO ARCHEOLOGIC DELLA NEAPOLIS

Look at the pink colors in these ancient Roman/Greek Caves. It was SO HOT that water looked VERY APPEALING!This is called the EAR of DIONYSIUS.A unique cave with impressive acoustics, once used for storing water.

ALL BUILT BY THE ROMANS AND GREEKS.

MORE MODERN ART in an ANCIENT SETTING……………..

THE TUFA STONE ABOVE.

Is a type of limestone, specifically calcium carbonate, that forms from the precipitation of minerals out of water.

It was a little TOO HOT for me this day in SYRACUSE.After walking the Historic NATIONAL PARK we sat our selves down for a GRANITA and a WATER.If you can imagine I was VERY HAPPY TO SEE OUR GUIDE and his CUTE LITTLE APE!

AS I was DONE WALKING FOR THE DAY!

THE PALACE and a FOUNTAIN that looked VERY INVITING AGAIN!

Now we are on the tiny island of Ortgia.

A couple of REMNANTS……….How many MEN did it take to LIFT these stones?

I have NO IDEA.Just remember there were no power tools or equipment back in the day.

A BIT OF FASHION FOR YOUR EYES……….

I LOVE THAT PALE PINK BUILDING.

The horizontal sailor t-shirt is ALWAYS BIG in EUROPE!

For both men and women.

The weather dictates shorts for ANY AGE!

I admire this age group on bicycles.

A PEEK through a wall to the other side!

NOW THIS APE has STYLE!!!!!!!

A MOMENT TO CAPTURE THE MOMENT!

I think this is my favorite photo from the whole trip!

First time in MY LIFE I have felt short!

There are ZERO BEACHES in ORTGIA!

JUST ROCKS to access the water.

I do not do well on rocks……..never have.

Never will!

THE FACADES of these building just TAKE MY BREATH AWAY!From the color to the window surround to the light fixtures!I guess NONE of the ARTISANS who created this immigrated to THE STATES as our buildings are so BORING!Don’t get me started on the CHURCHES HERE IN THE STATES!

LANTANA my husbands childhood favorite flower……………

I was thrilled I MATCHED the LANTANA…………….

I have NEVER seen so much, so BOUNTIFUL.

IT LIKES THE HEAT IS MY GUESS.

We ruined this dress in the wash when we arrived home as SOMETHING BLUE got in with it!

NAVY BLUE……

This dress is ON SALE NOW at Bryn Walker in BERKELEY.I think its 50% OFF!

If not its 30% OFF.The whole STORE IS ON SALE……………..it comes in a LILAC TOO!

1-510-525-9418 (CALIFORNIA TIME.)

YOU ARE WELCOME!!

THEY WILL SHIP.

NO ONE THERE!

THE PIAZZA WAS EMPTY!

This was early JUNE of 2025.

The ITALIANS aren’t on vacation yet!

DONOT GO IN AUGUST AS ALL THE ITALIANS ARE ON VACATION ;PLUS OTHERS FROM AROUND THE WORLD.

BEAUTIFUL CHURCH…………once again; I think to myself how did they get those stone figures up there?

I know in FLORENCE, they mounded piles of dirt to access the top of THE DUOMO.

That was the scaffolding!

I could MOVE INTO THIS…………

Could you?

I would put planters hanging from the balconies maybe with cascading LANTANA!

This was my last photo I shot in ORTGIA……………..stairs going no where now.

Plants and most likely an artifact or two if you dug around.

As a child I would have LOVED this setting to play in.

As an adult I do LOVE the LOOK of it.Minus the plastic bags.

Next up THE VALLEY OF THE TEMPLES in THE AGRIGENTO dates to 400 BC.

Meanwhile, back home I had a HAIRCUT!I had missed my appointment when we returned from this MAGICAL TRIP due to my BACK.She fit me in and here I AM………….

My buddy JO ANN was my INSPIRATION!

I recently saw her its been years and her daughter cuts her HAIR!

The daughter happens to have the same birthday as me and just turned 40 which makes sense as when we worked together at NORDSTROMS she was pregnant with her baby girl!SO over 40 years…………..I have known THIS BROAD who was and still is SO MUCH FUN!She then became an INTERIOR DESIGNER.Now retired.Still having FUN!

SHE WAS ALWAYS SMILING AND LAUGHING!

LOOK we even have the same hair. Our original color with DASHES of GRANNY GRAYS!!!

OH, I just came up with GRANNY GRAYS its a GOOD ONE!!

I went a little LONGER.Trying to hide the neck stuff a bit.

It was WINDY getting to the car, so that is why I have fly away HAIRS sticking straight up!

Some lipstick would be a BONUS, but I was too much in a hurry to show THE ITALIAN!

Necklace I purchased in NOTO, SICILY.It was like $30.00 and what sold me was how light it was around my neck.Plus THE SIZE IS RIGHT UP MY ALLEY!

TIGRE IN A STRETCHED POSITION.

THEODORE SNUG AS A BUG!

WE are becoming good friends………..it ONLY took a year!

SCHOOL has started and I have the sense everything is going to speed up again!

The FALL calendar is filling up.

One SON turns 36.

Company from ITALY ARRIVES.

HALLOWEEN I must prepare.

ANOTHER SON turns 38!

Need to unload some furniture into my house and do some MUCH NEEDED PRUNING INSIDE LA CASA!

First stop will be MY CLOSET.

YOU BE WELL……….. AND INVITE A FRIEND FOR LUNCH!

I just did that and we ate TUNA PASTA and MOZZARELLA tomato CAPRESE salad.

IT was DELICIOUS and OH SO EASY!

GET MOVING.START LIVING.

WE ALL LOVE TO SEE INSIDE OTHER PEOPLES HOUSES.

MAKE THAT TIME TO BE TOGETHER.

I will be at the SEBASTOPOL CENTER FOR THE ARTS on SATURDAY,AUGUST 23 rd from 2-4.

A short film will be shown on ADVANCED STYLE along with some question and answers with A BOOK SIGNING TO FOLLOW with the author of ADVANCED STYLE ARI SETH COHEN.

HOPE TO SEE YOU THERE………..tickets are $15.00 each.

I HOPE YOU ENJOY HIS BOOKS.

    Hi, Elizabeth,

I’m greatly enjoying the photos from your trip.
I think it’s possible that you may have confused tufa
which is indeed calcium carbonate that settles out of water with TUFF sometimes also pronounced tuffa. TUFF is formed by compacted volcanic ash. I myself made the mistake once when I was in Italy, I think at Siena. I mentioned to my friend oh, it’s tufa but he said no it’s TUFF (tuffa).
While it’s not impossible that you saw TUFA but I think it’s more likely that it was TUFFA.

I was impressed with your kind answer to Susan. It must be very hard for her to have such a terrible level of back pain and that she needs morphine daily.

I personally really liked the bright yellow dress. True, it is rather bright for the pastel colours of Italy, but I do think yellow suits you. I think there might be more flattering dresses for you, but I think that your yellow dress was probably incredibly comfortable for your trip. In fact, I think almost every colour suits you. True that most of the comments here are very positive except for the Maga people. But then the people who read your blog are people who share your interests for the most part. We are most likely to have at least one thing in common. It probably does not even enter our minds to criticize anything you say because we enjoy it. My comment about Tufa/tuffa is not meant as a criticism.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR TAKE ON TUFFA and or TUFF!
SICILY is NOT an island that screams PASTEL TO ME………although, TUFF is light colored!SICILY IS FULL OF REDS,ORANGES AND YELLOWS……….think LIMONCELLO!LEMON DRESSES AND BRIGHT COLORS.They are loud and VIBRANT PEOPLE………………think of the LAVA flowing down MOUNT ETNA!
Hopefully, those MAGA people have UNSUBSCRIBED BY NOW!
ARE WORLD HAS BEEN RUINED DUE TO THIS PAST ELECTION!
AND NOW THE COVID SHOT is in harms way of NOT BEING DISTRIBUTED!
I had an appointment and they DONOT HAVE IT AT MY MEDICAL CENTER!!!
YOU MAY HEAR ME ROAR SOON!!!!!!!!!

        Hi Elizabeth,

I myself once thought the tuff at Siena was tufa — from calcium carbonate. A geologist promptly corrected me that they are not the same. In California, I think the stunning example of tufa is at Mono Lake (I’d like to see that!). Here I have a rock garden made of tufa — it is great — you can drill holes in it and plant in the holes.

tuff or tuffa by contrast forms out of volcanic ash

Love your haircut!!! As you know, I cut mine yesterday, even shorter than yours. Chin length. And I’m loving your photos of Italy, especially the beautiful water and the sculpture. Like you, I’ve always wondered how the ancient Maya, the Italians, the Greeks, etc., managed to get those giant stone blocks to the top of the temples. Defies logic, doesn’t it? My favorite photos are of you, however, because you look so happy! I’m thrilled you went. xoxox, Brenda

I gotta say that you seem to have wittingly, or unwittingly assembled a crowd of strangely uniformly positive followers !!! I read all the comments and ultimately I began to find it quite weird how they are ALL, to a person, entirely lauditory!!!
Maybe I don’t understand the purpose of the comment section……or maybe they all know you well and understand you to be utterly unable to process a less than flattering reference? I don’t think you ARE
fragile though, given the deserved blasting you gave a month or so ago to those MAGA nuts who chastised your politics (which I LOVED, by the way.)
Anyway, what am I trying to say? I just found the rosy comments, one after the other, quite stultifying.
Has it become inexcusably bad manners to say something critical? Love the hair, love the photos, love your style, hope your back is better and all together now WHAT A LUCKY WOMAN TO TAKE SUCH A WONDERFUL TRIP AND TO SHARE IT WITH ALL OF US IS SIMPLY GRAND!!!!!!
As for myself, I too loved the haircut! But that ghastly yellow dress was one of the least flattering colors you could have chosen for the soft palette of Italy! On your Instagram site you have worn clothes that are simply divine and that show off your beautiful skin to perfect advantage. You looked lovely in your hospital gown!
That awful bright yellow seems really popular this summer….maybe people find it cheerful…… which it certainly is on a brown skinned woman!
Anyway, I was thrilled to hear it’s ruined! Good riddance!
Well. I’ve said more than enough! Maybe I’m just jealous as I have a VERY bad back, take ninety mgs a day of Morphine, and rarely leave my bed! I am also quite a bit older than you are, which perhaps gives me leave to be so ill mannered!
    Please don’t misunderstand me! I’M A BIG FAN ?????????????????????????????

      Dear SUSAN,
Thank You for your comment as YOU put a BIG SMILE on my face this morning! The comment section is for ANY COMMENT YOU NEED TO RELEASE!I take No offense to what you have stated above! In fact,I AGREE with you it’s not the BEST COLOR ON MY MOZZARELLA SKIN!Plus those CAP SLEEVES are not a flattering cut on my arms either!Yellow was one of the fashion industries colors of the YEAR which a company called Panettone ( like the ITALIAN CHRISTMAS BREAD) puts out!So, it has been popular recently!
I’m SO SORRY you are in pain as well.It is NO FUN at all and I now have more sympathy for my Mother who suffered for years since, I’m doing all the exercises now for myself that I would watch her do every morning!I am better but am up with a sore back and a lot of tension in the upper muscles that had left!I had MOVED a lot more yesterday and I do believe I’m worse today!I APPRECIATE YOUR COMMENT and those question marks I know were either HEARTS or another EMOGJI,which my comment section doesNOT recognize! Why I have no idea but perhaps the programming for this blog was made before the emojis became a part of our life so let’s just stick with EXCLAMATION MARKS which we all know work here for now!
Thanks again I agree and your comment is PERFECT!

Yet another exciting and enjoyable post from our Contessa! I love the things you notice on your travels – I would notice them as well: the clear water, the age of the folks riding the bicycles, their fashions, the facades of the buildings, wondering how they were constructed, those stairs-going-to-nowhere. Keep your ruined yellow dress and dye it dark blue! You looked especially cheery next to the Lantana. I love it, as well. They are only annuals here in Zone 7b, so don’t get so large. I have it in white, which is lovely. I enjoyed seeing all of the ruins there, and didn’t realize there were so many; I have been across the sea there in Tunisia and seen Carthage. It’s such a short distance, it makes perfect sense; those clever Romans. Your new ‘do is very flattering on you! And of course, the kitties are adorable. Thanks for sharing all of this with us, it is so fun to read and look at.

Oh Contessa, I love your new hairdo with the fringe/bangs – it makes you look much younger but you’re a Spring Chicken compared to me! Did the Italian like it? Did you wear your hair like this when you first
    Met him?

I love all the photos of your Italian adventures this Summer. The ape is iconic but I bet it was bloody uncomfortable! We’re now thinking of spending Christmas in Italy now we’re not going to Thailand. We want to go somewhere we’ve not been before. Napoli is very tempting. We can get a flight to Rome from Seville and a train onto Naples.

I bet if your boys and their families weren’t in the US, you would love to have stayed on in Italy, maybe forever?!

I’ve just watered the garden. The heatwave is over, thank God.

How sad about your lovely yellow dress. Im really good at getting stains out of things or getting them back to their original state – what a shame you live so far away ???

Im so happy to be living in Europe.

No, I did not have short hair in 1984. It was probably to my shoulders and most likely I had a permanent wave in it. It was the 80s and we liked curls!
He has always been a fan of long hair. I have tried short hair over the years a few times I really don’t have the face for short short hair, but this will do I think for the time being! The Italian did like my hair very much! Believe it or not the APE it was very comfortable much more so than the taxis in ROME!! I just love that APE. In fact I think I’ve mentioned this. I wanted my son to bring one home and put in his room or use on our street. We live on a short court and I thought it would be great for carting, firewood, and other things that we could share on our street!!
My husband makes LIMONcello and he has a Limoncello belt with paper cups and the pouring apparatus attached anyway I digress again. We were once upon a time a very fun street!!!
Go to Napoli I think that would be fabulous food, culture, and water views. It’s all there. My husband was born close to Naples so he is a Neapolitano!
The Italian would not wanna live in Italy today and I would have to go back and be there for a while. We lived there for three years in the early 90s and I did not wanna leave but it’s changing a lot and not for the better and of course why would we live there when our family is over here Doesn’t make any sense. We can ALWAYS VISIT,but first I have to get over my anger with BUSINESS CLASS as there is no way my body can fit into a coach seat for that 12 hour flight ANYMORE!

What incredible views!! The water looks crystal clear. Loved the Ape vehicle- open air and the driver looks very personable.
    I love your new haircut.

Robin in Umbria have you been to Sicily? If so, what towns did you visit? We had a lovely vacation and I’m sorry I missed seeing you. I did reach out but you didn’t get the message in time. I was just too far away from you anyhow I hope it hasn’t been too hot this summer. Fall is around the corner with the Vendimia arriving!!!

LOVE your new hairdo. It’s so becoming. Your travels have made me so happy, you look invigorated by them and I love it. The Italian seems to have made your daily life a lot more fun, and is a great example of how to live a retired life. Bless you both.

The Italian doesn’t sit still he has to move and yes he’s enjoying retired life but I wouldn’t call him retired. He’s always working on somebody’s project. If not his own this week he built a pond for our youngest son 100’ x 50’ or something like that.!! The man loves to work! Two weeks ago he created a nursery for baby twins that will be arriving in November!!
He is a man on the move with many many tools!

I know that about retired men! My husband retired from school administration in 2012, and has since worked as substitute in both teaching and administration, and is now working regularly as a background actor in film and television (he was an actor until his late twenties). I, on the other hand am happy to just do hobby projects in retirement. And travel, of course!

You are so welcome Donna. Thanks for following along. It’s always good to see other places and I was lucky enough to go on the trip as I mentioned I didn’t think I’d be able to go until right before we left. It’s been a tough year.

Your new Bob, looks fabulous on you. Love your new look. It certainly helps having such thick healthy looking hair. I said it, so it’s true. Will you have to blow dry it to have it look like this? Probably yes.
Thank you for all the pictures they are wonderful.

I’ve only washed it once Katherine since the cut and I partially blew it dry I was lazy and I didn’t have a round brush so yes blow dry with a round brush is how you make this look happen but I have to say I’m happy with it flipping up very easy and thank you for the compliment. My hair is no longer thick. That’s why we cut it off. It’s falling out by the hand fulls!
It’s really been quite a shock to me as I had such thick thick hair I could never put it up in a clip until these last few years anyway this is a darling cut. She did a wonderful job and I hope I can make it half as good looking as she did!

Hello Contessa, The places you visit all have such vivid colors and beautiful buildings and water. I appreciate your photos which always liven up my day. I suppose these could be sought out here, but except for a few places people don’t seem to make a huge effort. Plus the fact that it is cloudy and raining all day. Today I wanted to run errands, but I started hearing the thunder around 2:00, and the storms continued until evening.
