INTERMISSION.

August 11, 2025 61 Comments

I am going to interrupt this Italian adventure with a Post of RANDOM TOPICS!

ONE.

I am going to share MY BUSINESS CLASS EXPERIENCE WITH YOU ALL on the airplane.

TWO.

I have another BOOK TO TELL YOU ABOUT AND A RETREAT in THE FALL if you are so inclined to check it OUT!You have to be able to hop on an airplane to FRANCE to ATTEND!

THREE.

The CARD SHOP SHOCK!

FOUR.

MORE BIRTHDAY WISHES bestowed upon me by little ones!

FIVE.

A BOOK SIGNING AND MEET AND GREET with ADVANCED STYLE and ME!!

Let us begin with the airplane ride.

BUCKLE UP AS I RANT!

I HAVE ALWAYS FLOWN COACH SO THIS WAS SPECIAL!

I had my own TV screen with multiple choices of things to watch……………

Guess I should tell you the airline is ALAITALIA.

SO, this STICK FIGURE PANEL probably makes sense to most of you, but for me I had a difficult time! The GOAL was to make my seat become a BED!NOT AS EASY AS YOU MAY THINK………………That first STICK IS GOAL!But getting there you have to manipulate some of the other stick figures for the chair to recline!

HOW DOES ONE KNOW THAT?

MY ITALIAN DID and he has FLOWN LESS THAN ME and NEVER in BUSINESS CLASS!

SLEEP MODE for me, which the HUSBAND WHO WAS NEXT TO ME BETWEEN A PARTITION HAD TO DO WITH HIS TOUCH. LEANING OVER THE CONSOLE to my panel.I WASNOT A HAPPY CAMPER as they say here in the STATES!HE took this snapshot of me which I should NOT be sharing, however I am at the point of not caring!

What is happening to my hair!Long story short the HAIR is FALLING OUT ONCE AGAIN which all started at age 56 and it is back to say HA HA HORRENDOUS HAIR HOARDERS are back!Nine years ago I lost half my head of HAIR actually MORE.I could NEVER wear it up as it was TOO HEAVY!

I see bald spots here………..

I got side tracked FORGIVE ME!

IF ANY OF YOU HAVE FEEDBACK on hair LOSS I WOULD APPRECIATE IT!

THE ITALIAN IS ALWAYS HAPPY unless I put something in the wrong SPOT!

See how high that divider comes up?You cannot hold hands or lean on each other! Or for THAT MATTER TALK as there is too much noise!I ABSOLUTELY HATED THIS!He was in HEAVEN with his movies while I struggled to move the CHAIR!I crushed my shoes and my BASKET BAG.They should have gone in the space way down below which I did not see on the first flight over.OH I WAS SO PISSED!

WHY DON’T THEY GIVE YOU A SLIDE SHOW ON YOUR OWN TV OF HOW TO OPERATE YOUR SEAT along with the SAFETY PROCEDURES?

Once again I am CERTAIN A MAN DESIGNED THIS CUBICLE!

NOT A GORGEOUS ARTISTIC SOUL with COMMON SENSE!

AS you can see this is the seat in front of me on the LEFT.

ALL I CAN SEE is HIS TV SCREEN and the person to my side TV screen.

Because of the wrap around enclosure.

ZERO HUMAN CONTACT OR VISUAL.The only people you see on the 12 hour flight is the STEWARDS or STEWARDESSES.We were in the second row in the front of the GALLEY which they call the kitchen on airplanes and yachts I think!

I am pulling that OUT of my BRAIN from YEARS AGO.

I am SO AFRAID for us humans.Between the phones and these capsule seats (let’s call them) we are GOING TO HAVE NO TOUCH OR COMMUNICATION in the FUTURE!

THE SEAT BEHIND me to the left.A lovely Mother and her baby sat there.

THE MENU WAS GOOD, but we forgot to order me a GLUTEN FREE MEAL.

THIS IS TOTALLY OUR FAULT and by NO MEANS DO I BLAME THE AIRLINE.

Going over I just picked from a dinner.NO PASTA for me it looked DELICIOUS and there was cheese I could eat after the meal.I couldn’t touch the bread but,I could eat the green salad with zero dressing. The presentation was GRAND!They bring a white tablecloth and cloth napkin and arrange everything just so!I WAS VERY IMPRESSED with MY STEWARDS skills of setting a table HIGH IN THE SKY!

He got an A PLUS from me for his skill but was also very apologetic about not having FOOD FOR ME TO EAT!

He worried about me!

He was ITALIAN!

THIS WAS MY DINNER ON THE WAY HOME WITH MY SORE BACK from the fall.

THESE CRACKERS ALONG WITH A PLATE OF BURNT RICE from the bottom of the pot.

THAT WAS IT.

I still have these as I kept as a souvenir of the trip.

I was AFRAID to lay back in my BED/CHAIR for fear of the pain. So, I slept upright.

I thought for sure they were going to have to peel me off the plane in a stretcher……..

I went to the bathroom a few times and fell into the GALLEY walls LEFT,RIGHT……. LEFT

bump bump bump all the way back to row two.

That was not GOOD for the back.

I also sat down in my seat thinking it was higher than it was and BOY that really was not GOOD.

The pain ZIPPED UP MY SPINE LIKE A ZIPPER BEING CLOSED on a tight fitting gown.

Iam in NO HURRY TO GET BACK ON AN AIRPLANE ANYWHERE…….

SO, bottom line I did more damage en-route home.

Tra La…………….C’est la vie.

I WILL SURVIVE!

2. UP NEXT is THE BOOK I WANT TO TELL YOU ABOUT!

I READ IT IN TWO DAYS.I do not recall HOW I FOUND THIS WOMAN but she was talking into the phone expressing her dislike for someone we have all been EXPOSED TO since JANUARY!

ON INSTAGRAM or is it META!

HER CALL NAME THERE IS THE MAVERICK SOUL.

GAWD, I liked her immensely and LOVED what she was saying.

Not only does she live in FRANCE in an OLD CHATEAU she has written a book back in 2017.

A TABLE TOP BOOK with LOADS of PHOTOGRAPHS of homes with that BOHEMIAN FLAIR.

A few of the people she interviews you may recognize.

Some of us her NEW FOLLOWERS on THE GRAM wanted to buy the book so she was able to get AMAZON to find some old copies……….MY BOOK SAYS…….”MERRY CHRISTMAS…..2023 ALICE!”

It is expensive but so worth it if this is YOUR KIND OF DECOR.

Miv is her name and every day I find another similarity that we both possess.

HER CALL NAME ON INSTAGRAM is THE MAVERICK SOUL and I do BELIEVE she is on FACEBOOK AS WELL under her real name MIV WATTS.

She is AUSTRALIAN BY BIRTH.Then moved to BRITAIN. Back to AUSTRALIA and then on to FRANCE.

I hope I have that right.

She HOSTS along with another gal from New York a RETREAT in her CHATEAU TWICE A YEAR in GASCONY, FRANCE.

It is on INTERIOR DESIGN with field trips and eating FRENCH food prepared by chefs.Visiting chateaus and textile factories and or FLEA MARKETS.Her profession was a STYLIST for the MOVIE INDUSTRY and INTERIOR DECOR.SHE has a MARVELOUS PERSONALITY and lives with a MAN NAME HUMPH.He is a FISH MONGER.Recently she has shared a few photos of him and he is a HUNK.I’m assuming Australian TOO.

There is still more details I need to put together.I do not want to BOMBARD HER WITH TOO MANY QUESTIONS!AS I NEED A WHOLE DAY; MAYBE MORE TO GET ALL HER SCOOP.

SHE mows the LAWN on the TRACTOR!I keep asking for THAT PHOTO!

AND HER SON IN LAW WAS ON THE MORNING SHOW!

If you haven’t seen the series it is totally WORTH TRACKING IT DOWN!

I do BELIEVE it is MY FAVORITE SHOW of my ADULT LIFE!

There is a chapter on her FRENCH CHATEAU in the book and here is a PAGE to GAWK AT!

YES!That portrait of the WOMAN speaks to me BIG TIME!

THE MEANING OF MAVERICK if any of you need a REFRESHER is unconventional and independent.

MIV gave me a HUGE compliment by telling me

“YOU ARE A TRUE MAVERICK AND I LOVE THAT YOU ARE LABELING ALL YOUR TREASURES,FAMILY AND HUNTED!”

THE LINK TO BUY HER BOOK IS HERE:

https://www.amazon.com/s?k=THE+MAVERICK+SOUL+MIV+WATTS&i=stripbooks&crid=2N7LXTCMTKUXW&sprefix=the+maverick+soul+miv+watts%2Cstripbooks%2C136&ref=nb_sb_noss_1

Here is the Link for MIV WATTS LEXIS RETREATS.http://Lexisretreats.com

Miv, twice a year hosts a GET TOGETHER in her chateau where she offers TO TEACH US HOW TO USE THE STUFF WE HAVE AND LOVE.NOT TO FOLLOW THE CURRENT TRENDS…………I find this way of decorating VERY BRITISH.I know I have told you all before, but I will tell YOU again. When I lived in TUSCANY in the early 1990’s I would spend my pocket money on COUNTRY HOMES MAGAZINE from ENGLAND.It was a TREASURE TO ME………and I kept EVERY ISSUE! I STILL HAVE THEM!

They used color on the walls and used the ANTIQUES in the HOMES.When I grew up here in California the antiques were coveted more and just a visual.Once they were passed on to me I put them to work in my home.

Here is a brief description of WHO MIV is and what she has accomplished from her book.

Do not miss the 3 minute plus video on her website!

Volume up…………her daughter narrates.

(YOU MAY RECOGNIZE THE BEAUTIFUL VOICE!)

Miv Watts

Miv Watts, the mentor and inspiration for this Lexis Retreats, has spent her life involved in two major creative industries – music and film – working with artists at the top of their art. Her daughter is Hollywood film actress Naomi Watts, her son the photographer Ben Watts, and her late husband, Pete, was the sound engineer for Pink Floyd from their inception in the mid 1960s. She learned at an early age that ‘creativity’ is seeing what others see – but then thinking for yourself and having the courage to follow your thought. It is this practice that is the focus of the retreat:

“Creating a home is about filtering the layers and experiences of one’s life. It is theatrical, like creating a drama or film – but a home is also a process, it has a strong practical element. It is a mix of dreaming and deciding. Feeling and function.”

THE FALL RETREAT STARTS OCTOBER 2, 2025 and costs 4,000 EURO.That does not included your room that is additional.I do believe we all stay on her property in other OUT buildings!Check with her as there is a contact sheet on the website under RETREATS.

No, I am NOT going this year but I do HOPE to go next year if at all possible.I hope some of you will LOOK INTO IT and GO then report back to me on WHAT I MISSED!

She only takes a HANDFUL of LADIES SO HOP ON IT if you are interested.

DO GIVE HER A FOLLOW ON INSTAGRAM AND OR FACEBOOK!

I INSIST!

YOU WILL ENJOY HER SO MUCH……………..

NOW we come to NUMBER 3 on my list from above.

The MENTION of the CARDS!I needed a birthday card recently, actually TWO my supply from THE HEN HOUSE had dwindled down finally! So, me and the ITALIAN sauntered down the WAY to the card shop here in my town.I ended up buying 4 cards.Nothing SUPER SPECATACULAR just 4 plain cards………..guess how much they were?

$28.00 = 4 cards.

I find that OUTRAGEOUS………………..

MAYA AND TIGRE my neighbor

THIS CAT IS ONE OF A KIND.

HE ABSOLUTELY LOVES HER AND FOLLOWS HER AROUND IN THE GARDEN AND INSIDE HER HOME.

HE IS ONE OF THE BEST GIFTS MY SON HAS EVER GIVEN TO ME…………….

But then again he ALWAYS COMES THROUGH.

One year it was a BOX of CRICKETS so I could ENJOY MY SOIREE (PARTY) throughout SUMMER.

They have SURVIVED in my GARDEN for over TEN YEARS!

Every summer they ARE BACK IN FULL ON CHORUS MODE!

HE GAVE ME BETTY. As our dog SIR WINSTON had passed. A Cardigan Corgi.

HE gave me THEODORE.The gift being he would drive down from college and take me to the pound to pick out another cat since MIJO DIEGO had passed.Meaning he would spend sometime with MOM.ME!

He has a THEME this KID…………maybe just maybe a miniature cow is in MY FUTURE!

YES!The COW would be allowed in the HOUSE!

NUMBER 4.BIRTHDAY WITH LITTLE ONES.

BIRTHDAY CARDS FROM THE GIRLS.

This is a FUN PHOTO MY SON CAPTURED………….I’m saying OHHHHH and he is telling me its the FLORENTINE FLEUR DE LYE.It happens to have a number on it!That NUMBER IS 65!

IT IS MY 65th YEAR!

BIRTHDAYS KISSES………….GLADLY ACCEPTED!

For those of you who are a bit confused these are ALL MY GRANDCHILDREN.

The little one belongs to MY SON.The other two belong to his PARTNER who I happily become the Third GRANNY in their LIVES.THE BOY is 10.The Big Girl is 8.Then there is LOTTIE who is 5.They all LOVE to BE TOGETHER and care for one another. It BRINGS US SO MUCH JOY TO SEE THEM TOGETHER!

THIS ONE WILL BE FRAMED and placed on MY DESK!

DIESEL the grand dog who is hopping from one SONS house to another SON’s for SUMMER CAMP!

I LOVED HOW HE MADE HIMSELF AT HOME IN MY GRANDMOTHER’S CHAIRS!

HE IS ONE YEAR OLD and I keep forgetting the BREED but HE IS ADORABLE.

A BIG,FLOPPY,LOVEABLE BEASTIE BOY!

GRAND DOGS ARE JUST AS SPECIAL AS GRANDCHILDREN TO ME!

Always enjoy your posts. I haven’t flown anywhere since I moved here. Can’t even figure out how to check luggage!
As to cards, I buy from Dollar Tree, also known as DT Emporium. They’re very decent.
I’m always looking for hair products as I have skinny hair, not like your luxurious locks. I take Biotin. I think it helps.

I just saw your reply to my comment on the latest blog post – yes I DO owe you a long email! I’ll work on that. In the meanwhile, looks like this place has a copy of Miv’s book for $50, BUT says to call or email them for availability.

    Hi Elizabeth,
So sorry your back is still bothering you. Ugh, pain every day is awful.
I know you enjoyed your trip to Italy despite it all.
Wish I could attend your panel, I would have made the trip up, but will be in Santa Barbara for a few days. In fact I booked tickets to Lotus Land for that morning, and am so looking forward to it. Thank you for reminding me about visiting the garden!
I’ll let you know when I can come up in September, still working out a few things. My workshops have really taken off and I have so many booked that sometimes getting a day to myself is tricky!
    Take care of yourself,

    Xo Heidi

By coincidence, I have that Maverick Soul book and was just going to sell it on CraigsList because I’d re-read it. and need to make space on my bookshelf. I’ll sell it for $85 plus shipping (you can choose the method, whether USPS book rate or another carrier). I’m not sure how you should contact me.

Regarding Hair loss, mine was coming out alarmingly and I started taking Hair ReVive by Ridgecrest Herbals https://rcherbals.com/products/hair-revive and I was delighted that the formula worked.

Wow, fabulous photos, LA CONTESSA! So weird the business class as cubicles and you’re right, zero human interaction. I’ve heard about that book, Maverick, from someone on youtube. I would love to get me a copy. Your grandchildren are precious! The pets (including a box of crickets) are equally precious. Sending much love from Canada.

P.S. I awakened from a nightmare this morning at 3:30 am. Trump was the main character. I have now penned a poem about the ‘situation’. I will likely publish it on my blog in a few days.

I enjoy your posts and blog so much! I randomly found Miv and follow her on Instagram. Her style reminds me of you. She has had a fascinating life, and I didn’t realize Her daughter was Naomi. I take Nutrafol for thinning hair and think it helps. Not fun to swallow 4 capsules a day but it works. There is a formulation for post menopausal women. I had a similar experience on a business class flight from Tokyo on American. I couldn’t figure out any of the buttons and my husband trying to help from his own enclosure. Good grief, can’t they make things easier?! Hope your back feels better soon. I enjoy your take on life.??

Thank You for your comment!Yes,Miv and I could be sisters I think! We think alike in politics and STUFF!!Plus she adores animals.I want to copy her red and white check chair gingham material. I absolutely love it now to decide which chair and find that fabric. That’s my project for the rest of summer!Good to know I’m not the only one who found that chair button panel so frustrating. I thought it was just me so thank you for sharing your story. Good old American Airlines used to be one of my father‘s favorite airlines. He hated United. Don’t remember the reasons I was too young, but he flew a lot for work.
Thank you thank you for a name of a product. I’m going to make a bite to eat and then I’m gonna go see if I can order it.Anything, at this point it’s just so terrifying to be losing one’s hair!

    Hi Contessa,

Your posts are always so interesting and fascinating! Love all your stories. Sorry to read you weren’t so happy with the business class experience but believe me, it’s always. better than flying economy for long intercontinental flights. I’ve flown business class 3 times (once to Hong Kong and twice to California or Seattle) and I loved the experiences. I always have a noice cancelling headphone with me but now on business class a noice cancelling headphone is provided (perfect agains the noise and much better sound when watching a film).

Wow, thanks for the tip about Miv! I’m following her now on Instagram.

Love always your stories and photos of your pets and grandchildren. Yeah, birthday cards are so expensive now but I usually don’t pay more than €4. I never buy the ones that fold out as they’re too heavy for international post (cost more to send).

Hope you find a solution for your hair loss!

    Love to you! xoxo

I really don’t need to buy cards since I have a box full from days of buying multiples in my shop plus I like to use pictures as cards on gifts anyway it was an outing. I guess it was cheaper than having lunch with the hubby.!!

Always so fun to hitch a ride with you.. however, the plane flight and your back are obviously not, yet you find a way to see the humor, or the lack of common sense engineering, or share your opinion, or educate/entertain. The grands are adorable as are the pets.. how about a miniature donkey versus miniature cow : ) They are also adorable and very smart, but I know you are partial to cows. We have my mother’s cat living with us now.. she is a gorgeous long-haired tortoise with a real fantastic tail : ) I named her when they adopted her.. Cleopatra, Cleo for short. It is very hard as she had no experience with dogs and Mr. Chips obviously did with cats, but has clearly forgotten. Hmmm… or should I say hiss : ) Will follow Miv, sounds like the dream retreat… you and she must have been twins separated at birth : ) XOXO

I would love a miniature donkey. I think I’ve wanted a donkey longer than a cow. Do you remember the show called GUNSMOKE and that donkey’s name was worthless? I have wanted a donkey so I could put a straw flowered hat on its ears since back in the 60s.!!
We could give the neighborhood children rides up and down the street pony rides. I love it. How am I gonna make that happen? Well, I followed Carla in Paris and loved her photography. She did of couples and I made that happen with the two sons so now I’m gonna think about my donkey and my cow Both sons have property with Barns!!
Or maybe we buy the next house that goes on the market on my street and turn it into a barn!!!!
      A rescue of sorts!!

Oh Nella, you will love Miv! She is right up our alley. I’m glad you popped over and read this, but I want you to go back. There are three posts behind this one that talked about the Italian trip which I think you would enjoy as well being from that region! So good talking to you the other day your nieces book is on its way to me right now and I will be in touch as soon as I finished it. Love to you!

    Dear Cousin Elizabeth,

Hair – I believe it’s a family thing. I’ve lost more than 50% of mine.

I have an old picture of Granny, when she was in her late teens/early 20’s, and she has mounds of hair. Then I have many pictures of her after the 3 grandchildren were born, and she was well into her 60’s at that point. Much less hair. We really don’t have any other comparisons, I’m afraid, but that’s my guess.

Delighted that you will be attending the panel discussion. What fun! Enjoy every moment of it!

    Fondly, your cousin, Barb

Send me a photo of the photo of our grandmother with Hair!! Pronto!
I only remember the white hair that was perfectly coiffed and with a net over it!
My dad had very thick hair and curly and my mother had a good head of hair too, so I just don’t understand this and my mother had good hair until the very end and you know the father kept the hair short but he had hair.Could be medicine could be stress Could be many things I suppose!
      Thanks for your comment, cousin!

What an enjoyable intermission! I got a kick out of your sleeping on the plane photo and your description of the seat maneuvering. As a free-spirited bohemian myself, that book is calling my name – $50 is the best price I can find for it so far. Wish I could attend the panel discussion – you must tell us all about it in a future blog post! Looks like you enjoyed your birthday! Those children are adorable. A child can never have too many Grannies.

Happy Belated Birthday Dear Elizabeth! I loved the photos of you and the grandchildren and all of the dogs and cats that are also near and dear to my heart. What would we do without them?

Sebastopol…. I was there 30 years ago for a Polaroid photography workshop. I bought an antique pine Haywood Wakefield drop-leaf table and four cane seats because I knew they’d be perfect for the Little House at the ranch, and they were. Near there is Bodega Bay, where Hitchcock’s film, The Birds, was filmed. Countryside too flat there for me, and I liked Sebastopol much better. Have a wonderful time. If I lived near there, I’d come! xoxox, Brenda

Brenda, I can’t believe you came from Texas to Sebastian pool!! That made me smile, big! Gosh, those Polaroid cameras were big. My mom had one.
30 years ago we were here we’re just a hour and 15 minutes away and yes, I know about Bodega Bay. I grew up over there in Marin County. I always wondered how they found the movie locations out in the boonies who is scouting out there. That’s a very chic place to live now!As a child in school, we would take field trips out there to see nature and the beach and an old lighthouse!
You already flew out for the luncheon the Instagram luncheon you’ve done your fair share. Hopefully I’ll get some pictures from this and I can share with you.!

I just love your son’s gift theme. My husband saw how enamored I was of the little stray orange cat who would venture onto our property here and there, and finally 9 months later he managed to bring him inside where he’s been happily an indoor cat ever since. He told me he wanted to put a big red bow around his neck for my birthday but alas it wasn’t meant to be. I am glad you remind me of all the reasons i liked business class when i traveled for business, because it would be all the reasons i would dislike it now that i DONT travel for business!!! You are a maverick in every sense of the word. I also think you embody california living in all the sweetest ways.

I LOVED being called a MAVERICK!
I think there was a TV show when I was growing up called Maverick. I wonder if anyone else remembers that can’t even remember what it was about a man and a car I believe.!! Orange cats are the best cats. Can you guess who’s in my lap right now stretched and sound asleep? In a minute I’m gonna finish here and I’m gonna have to put him down. He’s not gonna like that! There’s just something about their personality that other cats don’t have and I love how his whiskers are half white and half black he’s got to be close to 20 years old.!!!
So happy you enjoyedMiv’s book and aren’t we lucky we both got a copy and now they’re sold out!!

Your business class flight seems to have been a waste of money, but you can’t expect much from Air France. Sure there are much better airlines from US to Italy for the same price. But important, the round trip itself was impressive. This is what count.

      Hola RENA!
No not AIR FRANCE an Italian company new to me they took over Air Italia!I THINK IF I HAD BEEN FEELING MORE PERKY I WOULD HAVE ENJOYED IT MORE! The service was exceptional, really exceptional. The bathrooms were clean and the food looked delicious and the wine list was extensive none of which I could have but it was those damn seats that just sent me over the edge.
The Trip WAS A SMASH AND WE HAD A MOST ENJOYABLE TIME TOGETHER!
That’s what counts as you say!

I signed up to follow Miv Watts on Facebook. An interesting person for sure. And her daughter, Naomi, elevates every film she is in. One of my personal favorites is The Painted Veil with Edward Norton as her costar. Very good movie. Your grandchildren are delightful. And Tigre and Diesel! Thanks for sharing your airplane experience. I would be a stranger in a strange land trying to understand those seats too! Hope you feel stronger and better soon. Looking forward to more from your Italy experience.

Elizabeth, you never stop amazing me. You carry on despite your pain and are so much fun. I enjoy coming to your blog. It’s like a breath of fresh air. It’s the only one I still read because it’s not a constant reminder to buy this and buy that; or that your wardrobe or your house needs updating. Those types of blogs feel to old. I cannot stand reading them anymore.
Your posts are a delight. You let us into your life and keep it all very real. I wish there were still people who showed us life as it really is instead of the sanitised version of it.
Love the photo of you with your grandkids. It will look wonderful on your desk.
