A FEW STORIES!

March 7, 2023 95 Comments
Banksy

BANKSY PASSED ON FEBRUARY 27, 2023.

As I mentioned on INSTAGRAM the final curtain has fallen………..

He was eight years old and such a good piggy!

I had the appointment set for three weeks prior but it seemed he had a RESURRECTION so I cancelled it!

He was in RENAL FAILURE.Not eating. Not peeing. Not pooping. JUST SLEEPING!

His tail still WAGGED and up until his FINAL MORNING he was INTO THINGS!

One of his final stunts was to Cruise around a shelf I have in the kitchen with books, rose bud vases (so light weight)and framed photos…………do you know the ONLY thing he knocked over was a PHOTO taken by a photographer of MYSELF AND HIM in the kitchen!

On our last early morning time together we hung out in my closet. It’s big and has a PERSIAN RUG in it which he liked to sleep on AFTER PULLING DOWN A FEW BITS OF CLOTHING TO ARRANGE FOR A PILLOW!

We chatted he grunted and I told him he would meet WINSTON AND DUKE AND MY MOM UP THERE!

DO you know he got up and moved and gave his BACK TO ME!As if he completely understood what I was saying and said

” I AM NOT READY FOR THIS!”I was having second thoughts up until the time the VET showed up in the pouring rain!

One shot was given to relax and put him to sleep……….that took about ten minutes.

ANOTHER SEVEN SHOTS were administered directly to the heart as pigs donot have prominent veins.

BANKSY would NOT SURRENDER TO HEAVEN!

He was given enough for a cow and a pig!

The circulation was poor in his body due to renal failure.

HE FOUGHT IT ALL THE WAY!

Which of course made me think WHAT AM I DOING!

MY ITALIAN AND THE VET were able to carry him to the back seat of the VETS TRUCK and transport him to BUBBLING WELLS an animal crematorium.

I am suppose to get a call TODAY to pick him up and bring him home.

MY EMPATHIC SKILLS TELL ME THATS NOT GOING TO HAPPEN!

(I was RIGHT!)They need a bit of CONTESSA training in the social grace department!

Banksy

At death he was 168 pounds for those of you who are interested.

Banksy & La Contessa

IN other NEWS I FOUND OUT WHO SENT ME THE ADORABLE FLOWER BASKET!

  THANK YOU KATHERINE!

Which made me HAPPY as the florist told me there was NO RECORD ON FILE WITH THAT ORDER NUMBER!

It’s THE FLORIST NUMBER under ORDER NUMBER!!!

Twice I was put on HOLD and told the first GO AROUND I did not have an account with them!

Of course I do not have an account I want to find out who sent it to me as there was no last name!

The time and the amount of ZERO COMMON SENSE on the other side of my telephone DROVE ME CRAZY!

As I stated I just want to THANK THE PERSON as I know a FEW KATHERINES!

Because if I do thank her she may use your SERVICE AGAIN!

If she NEVER HEARS FROM ME she will think I didNOT LIKE THE ARRANGEMENT and that will be the end of that!

WHY DO I HAVE TO EXPLAIN MYSELF TIME AND TIME AGAIN IS BEYOND MY COMPREHENSION IN TODAYS WORLD!

REALLY it was SO MUCH easier when we had a phone stuck on a wall…………

We got a REAL PERSON within seconds and FOLLOW THROUGH!

AND A PLEASANT ONE AT THAT!

Another GOOD GRIEF STORY!Can you HANDLE IT?

I read we have a new little HOLE IN THE WALL MEXICAN spot to eat at in town!

So I call to TAKE OUT!

NO ANSWER.Only directions on the voicemail to call DOOR DASH!Well, I am at the AGE where I do not want THE APP DOOR DASH nor do I want to install it to get one nights dinner!

I BLOW UP AND RANT then wait and call back…….its like 6pm.

They answer!I give my order saying which condiments I want and she calls that” EVERYTHING!”There was a choice of about TEN items…….sour cream, guacamole, cheese you get the idea! IN 15 minutes all will be ready!Great time to pop in the car and drive into town!Oh, they had a side dish of FRENCH FRIES which I thought was FUNNY being MEXICAN and I LOVE FRIES especially MC DONALDS if they have been cooked long enough! So, I ordered those too!

45 minutes later my ITALIAN comes back to the car with food in bag!

GOOD GRIEF!

Smells GOOD………all the way home. All of FIVE MINUTES.I am hungry and excited I did not cook!

I unpack the BAG.

NO FRIES!!!

Instead we get cookies!!!!!!!!!!

I WAS SO MAD.

To be truthful I was looking forward to the FRENCH FRIES more than the TACOS!

I asked THE ITALIAN were they SWAMPED?It’s dinner time and they are NEW…………. let’s give them the benefit of the doubt?

He said ,”NOT REALLY”.One couple eating and another two waiting like he was……..girl behind counter flirting with cook.

ALL YOUNG PEOPLE BEHIND THE COUNTER NONE OF WHICH COULD GIVE A HOOT.

SPEAKING OF YOUNG PEOPLE…………

A LITTLE GIRL AT THE MOVIE THEATER.

PRETTY ADORABLE.

 GOT POPCORN AND TUTU!

READY TO PARTY!

AS FOR ME HERE I AM…………….SLOWING COMING BACK TO LIFE!

 SPRING WILL HELP ME RECOVER.

WE HAVE HAD SO MUCH RAIN AND SNOW!

MY ITALIAN IS A WONDERFUL SKIER……

HE WENT A COUPLE OF WEEKS AGO FOR THE DAY WITH A FRIEND.LONG STORY SHORT THE THREE HOUR TRIP HOME TOOK THEM 13 HOURS! THE HIGHWAY WAS SHUT DOWN AND SO THEY HEADED NORTH!! AT ONE POINT THEY WERE HEADED EAST!HE NEEDED TO BE GOING SOUTH!LETS JUST SAY THE TWO MEN BONDED IN THE CAR FOR THE RIDE HOME!I HEAR WE WILL BE INVITED TO HIS DAUGHTERS WEDDING COME FALL!

DID YOU GROW UP LEARNING THIS BY OTHER PEOPLES ACTIONS OR LISTENING TO YOUR PARENTS?

I DID AND I FOUND IT A JOY TO STUMBLE ACROSS!

I BELIEVE THE PEOPLE WHO DO THESE KINDNESSES ARE HAPPIER PEOPLE IN GENERAL.

ARE YOU FINDING JOY IN YOUR DAILY LIFE?

 HOW DO YOU DO THAT?

LET’S SHARE A FEW IDEAS TO HELP OTHERS WHO MAY BE STRUGGLING!

I KNOW I CHECK IN WITH PEOPLE BY A PHONE CALL OR SEND THEM A MESSAGE.

I TRY AND TAG THEM IN A PHOTO ON INSTAGRAM IF I THINK THEY WOULD BE INTERESTED.

CAN YOU SUGGEST OTHER THINGS THAT WOULD MAKE A PERSON SMILE?

SCROLL DOWN AND LEAVE A COMMENT SO OTHERS CAN READ!

IF YOU ARE A FIRST TIME COMMENTER I HAVE TO APPROVE YOU SO DONOT DESPAIR!

IT WILL SHOW UP LATER!

XXX

ONCE AGAIN A BIG THANK YOU FOR YOUR WELL WISHES AND CARDS AND FLOWERS AND FOOD!

IT TAKES A VILLAGE AND YOU ARE ALL MY VILLAGE PEOPLE!

THANK YOU!

We will all miss Banksy. He was such a fun vision in all of your photos. He will be missed. Regarding phones, orders and everything else. It’s all changed. I doubt never to be the same. I too love McDonalds and Fries. My children think it’s too unhealthy. Not me.If that is not your granddaughter she should be. She looks just like you! A beauty.

I’ve recently begun reading your blog and am delighted! Thank you for sharing your journey with its highs and lows. How you must miss Banksy and with all such kind comments others miss him too.

Today’s comments about how to be kind really struck me. I certainly agree with the list you gave and it reminded me of a story I heard long ago. In this story a little boy with special needs is getting ready for Valentine’s Day. His mother watches as he often is overlooked at school. As Valentine’s Day rolls around he ardently makes valentine’s for each of his classmates. His mother worries that he might once again be left out from the fun of receiving his own card. At the end of the day as this little boy comes home he’s repeating something over and over again. As his mother listens she hears him say “I didn’t forget anyone, I didn’t forget anyone.” That’s the kind of person I want to be putting the focus on others. Your list helps us to be that kind of person, thanks for the reminder!

I am so sorry that Banksy is gone. You gave him a wonderful, loving home, and he might be the ONLY of his kind to sleep on a Persian rug! What a great pal you had. And how symbolic that he only knocked down a photo of two of you.
I am so happy to know you are recovering and feeling better each day! Sending love from Italy!!????

    Hi Elizabeth,
Poor Banksy. I know how much you will miss him. We all will.
Customer service seems to be an imaginary thing these days. I don’t get it, what is so difficult about using a little common courtesy and common sense? I try not to get too aggravated but sometimes it’s infuriating!
Joy for me is found in the little things all around. Right now all the beautiful blooming trees make me smile. I say my thank yous every morning and try to carry gratitude in my heart and mind throughout the day. Really we have so much to be thankful for.
This rain is getting to be a bit much, though…

I’m sure you miss Banksy, your sidekick.. I’m so happy to see you are on the mend, I know how you feel, but it will come.. your health again! Go outside as much as you can and enjoy Nature’s gifts.. so healing and the best therapy! Give yourself time.. as far as ranting, we all do it, it’s allowed! I don’t do any food apps period! If I can’t cook or don’t feel like it, I order over the phone or in person
and wait for the food to go..or the Ralpher does …nothing seems simple anymore! It has been a difficult several years for all of us of a certain age! I’ve promised myself to start entertaining again, trying something new outside my comfort zone and refrain from being judgmental.. practice humility and kindness more… love this forum here of strong, creative, courageous and brilliant women!! Thank you Elizabeth! Much love

I have not opened my home email for awhile (too many at work), but have been thinking of you and Banksy. I am so, so sorry to read this news. It never gets easier…the loss of any beloved pet is so deep, really to the bone heartache. And their absence is so very hard to adjust to. With Banksy, I think that would be especially felt… he was bigger than life in so many ways. Thank you for sharing him with us, it was always a joy to see and read about him. I must have said “Such a lucky pig” a thousand times over the years. And so were you. And so were we. Sending much love to you…

    Dear Elizabeth,

I have already sent you a message about Banksy, but I agree with all of your other fans – he was one of a kind and I know you will miss him. As to manners: I taught customer service on an international basis on five continents. There is no excuse for bad or lazy behavior, anywhere. Period. We must all lead by example for our wayward young people (and some of the not-so-young.) People love to hear their own name. People like to be asked about themselves/their opinions. People like to be acknowledged. The two most powerful words in the English language are, “I’m sorry.” It’s that simple. Compliment good service when you see it; thank people for smiling. Reinforce good behavior. On to joy: I make it a point of experiencing joy every day. It is a choice. Use your senses: What do see that makes you happy? What do you hear? What do you smell? What do you taste? What do you hear? Being aware and in the moment makes these things apparent. Practice gratitude. Devote time to discovery. Smile and laugh. I try and crack myself up at least once a day. If I can bring someone else along for a laugh, that’s a bonus. Finally, give good tips to service people and sincere compliments to strangers. Spread good will.

Much love to you and yours.

I open the back door to let Nola out for her morning tinkles and say, “Good morning beautiful day!” I started doing that when my girls were little. Old habits…

I get a kiss from my hubby when he leaves for work in the morning. Even when I’m asleep. I look forward to that.

My morning coffee from Starbucks and the seat warmer in my car as I drive to work. I can’t seem to recreate a passably good coffee at home and I tell myself I’m worth the $ for the designer coffee. (I keep trying at home w the regular coffee pot but it’s not the same).

Banksy was a wonderful companion. He will be missed, but boy, was he loved.

    Hi there CONTESSA
Thank you again for sharing with us over the years the life of Banksy. We all our sorry that his life has ended. He brought such joy. It will take quite awhile before the sense of him still being in your home will diminish. Many fond memories.
Glad to read that you are starting to feel better.
Spring is in the air here – I saw some forsythia blooming today – a sure sign of spring.
Oh my customer service has gone down the drain. Last week I was trying to register for a lunch/learn talk with a university – when I’d click to register nothing further happened. Tried that numerous times over 2 days. So I e-mailed the dept that was hosting it to please register me. I also left a telephone message with the organizer. Did I get a reply/confirmation that I was registered. NO! I tried again online on Monday to register – not able to. So then I tried with my husband’s computer and I was finally able to register. Still haven’t received any acknowledgement re phone call/e-mail from the university.
In December I called a customer service number for a restaurant – had 3 concerns. I was assured that the manager would call me back. I was told probably not this week as we were heading into xmas but the next week. Well here we are March 8th and still no contact from the manager.
Since I do need/want my concerns addressed I now will be writing (snail mail) to the local head office address and a copy to the main office back east.
Oh my re the Italian having his worker cut your roses. I am sure you saw red! My friends who are master rose growers – cut back their roses 1st in the fall and now again in the spring. The roses flourish – mind you if there were buds you have lost some magnificent blooms.
It’s good to have a rant – why keep it in – others may have had similar experiences so sharing helps to have concerns acknowledged.
    Take care.

Aw, sweet Banksy! His tail wagged up until the end. That made me tear up and if that’s not a reminder to be grateful then I don’t know what is. We often learn these lessons from our four-legged friends. He is certainly in heaven now looking down on you and the Italian with love.
Door Dash? I hate that stuff! I don’t like the idea that someone could open up my food and have a bite on the way over. All these apps are ridiculous. My kids have them all! Uber, door dash, skip the dishes…on and on.
Sounds like that little restaurant won’t last too long at the rate they’re going.
I don’t blame you for having a rant. I love to rant every once in a while.
That photo of you is gorgeous, LA CONTESSA. You look very healthy.

My heart breaks for you at the ache that the loss of Banksy has left in all your hearts and home. He rests peacefully now though and my prayers are offered for all.
Here’s hoping that a wonderful spring is going to see you flourish this year health-wise.
    Once again all love

My sympathies, and prayers for Banksy passing. This is sad news. Take good care of yourself. Grieving the loss of a pet is very heartbreaking.

Find joy in life? I think sometimes I could do better if I was a dog with loving owners. Pretty harsh to feel that way. The awful part is that there are too many folks that feel the same.
I write stories creating characters for the friends and gardens I don’t have. I paint what I feel like painting. I watch birds.
Laughable, I have a cousin Joy that I haven’t seen or heard from since I was 8 years. Pity party over. Time for a cannoli run! ?

Contessa, Like you I’m still coming to terms with Banksy’s farewell. He was such a big part of my virtual … and sometimes actual … life and he brought JOY. I’m going to miss that pig. He was a lucky pig. Had a wonderful, extraordinary life. And we (your community) were lucky too. We smiled and laughed at his antics and learned that pigs are people too. As for the Mexican place. New? The fry oversight would have irritated me too. You must tell me the name of this place, if it’s any good. xo

Our Carissima Contessa, such a heartfelt and BEAUTIFUL post! From over the Rainbow Bridge Banksy is watching over YOU with the most treasured memories of a Wonderful life in your home. I am sure he will be visiting often – especially in your lovely garden come Spring!
I am sorry you didn’t get your fries – one of my favourite foods, too! My girls and I actually get Mc Donald’s a couple times a month and the KIDS at the counter ALWAYS mess up our orders. I now CHECK every item BEFORE I LEAVE. It is the only way with such distracted teenagers working these franchises! 9/10 times they forget to salt the fries! Big No No in my book! By the way, Elizabeth, is that Scrumptious little Angel with popcorn in hand your granddaughter?? She is GORGEOUS!

I think I will miss Banksy for a very long time. As I told you my Springer of 12 years was leaving us at the same time. March 7th we lost her. Never gets easier, for the ones that have a deep love for their pets. Loss is tremendous.
Your granddaughter with tutu and popcorn too adorable. They do bring the sunshine back after the rain.
You have earned a large fry from McDonalds. Tell them at window you NEED them today. Fresh ones. Say please and cross fingers.
Glad your are recovering. You look like you are well, but take time to fully rebound, I agree.
Have a wonderful spring and I hope you see Banksy in all the roses and don’t tell him no! Let him eat them now. He has earned them.
    Condolences to you!
    Happy days to you!

You are certainly looking brighter in your photos, am hoping for a smooth recovery for you.

How lovely to read that you are feeling better…spring is a tonic and your garden will be there to cheer you along as you regain your strength.
Small snippets of joy are found where you don’t always expect them to be…small surprises that occur when you really open your eyes to the wonder of life.
I love to give gifts…not terribly expensive ones…thoughtful vintage ones that I choose with a particular person in mind.
A China floral teacup and some tea to a friend, a journal and a pen fur another, flowers in a vintage vase. Giving makes me feel good.

    Dear Elizabeth,
So sad to hear of Banksy’s passing. He was fun to watch. You gave him a good home for sure.
The things we learn about manners are timeless. Most I learned as a child but one my husband taught me was asking someone’s name and using it. He leaned that in business and I have found it to resonate well with people when I practice it. I also noticed how I respond when someone does it with me. Good reminders on all of these, especially about forgiveness. Both manners and forgiveness are very much needed in this world more than ever today.
Thank you for your blog/newsletter, I always make time to read and enjoy them, you can tell it’s a labor of love to your friends and followers.

I use the name request when calling to ordered something or a follow up regarding a prescription etc.IT DOES WORK!I think we brighten their day as well as its a bit different than the normal call!I also go further and ask questions if there is time in between. For example I had a breathing test.I got to sit and he got to look at a screen.I love to know where people are from and I said,” Are you ITALIAN?”which led to a fascinating answer!I tend to think about the mundane work some people have to do and like cheering them up..
He was very gracious and kind and told me I gave “GOOD EFFORT” but I know DAM WELL I FLUNKED!

Kindness and compassion are key and I find acting on both in our daily lives guarantees no regrets. Why people choose otherwise makes no sense to me. Dear Contessa – I am so sorry about the loss of Banksy. You were there from him right to the end, with love and compassion. One day you will see him again, I know.
I am looking forward to more comments here about loneliness and how to abate it. I live alone and my children are thriving in their careers in other states. I remember those years when I was young and, of course, now wish I had called my mother more so that she knew I thought of her regularly. I wish my children would do that, but we have settled on once a week, mostly. Finding grace and happiness in our older years seems to be what these older years are all about – as we do that, we can give to others. Or maybe it is the reverse? I ramble on, still trying my best to grow and learn as I age. Before I close, I hope you feel much better soon.

Banksy will always be with us. What a personality! Businesses that do not have customer service no longer get my money. My first job was at a department store Marshall Field’s and their motto was “Give The Lady What She Wants!”. That was our only goal. Now it’s hard to talk to a human to get something resolved. When I walk my dog early in the morning I focus on the trees and birds. They change everyday. Spring now is so exciting because everything is waking up. In the winter I share soups and stews – everyone loves a home cooked meal so I always make extra. later regrets are rarely about work but lost time with friends and family. Aim for one call, one text, one card a day to connect. That’s why we love so so much Elizabeth. Thank you for sharing all your interactions.Good or bad, we are not alone. Xoxo

You know that whole “count your blessings” thing? It really works! When I feel myself grumbling I try to remember to take a minute and think about the things in my life that are wonderful – friends (like you), my life partner, how far my children have come in life, my warm home, food on the table, and my thriving CPA practice – among other things. Then a deep breath, and I can usually smile again.
