HEART FAILURE!

March 20, 2023 93 Comments

I tell you my year just keeps on getting WORSE!

How on earth that is possible I do not know but this is the LATEST!

ON MARCH 1,2023 I went for an ECHOCARDIOGRAM as it had been awhile years in fact; THREE.

Most of you know I had HEART SURGERY in SEPTEMBER of 2010 for a Mitral Valve.

Things were good for a couple of years and then the same patterns returned.Shortness of breath and Tired.Too tired.

Well let’s BLAME that on the medication I was on for 20 years.

SO I asked to go off it after the surgery.Everyone was OKAY with THAT!

I still had stomach issues but continued on LIVING!

A probiotic helped me GREATLY and then they STOPPED making it!

A FUNCTIONAL DOCTOR gave me ZYPAN and that took care of that ailment!

 Forever GRATEFUL TO HER!

I NOW TAKE NOTHING AND ALL IS WELL DOWN THERE!

I go in for the ECHO and enjoyed talking to the Technician.

He was a MUSICIAN before his job now!

Traveled the world and was on BROADWAY!

Later that day I get the results that are generated by the computer…..

A few discrepancy’s from what I can read!

ejection fraction graphic

MY EJECTION FRACTION IS 30-35%…………….according to the chart.

I googled I’m in HEART ATTACK MODE!

IN 2020 this test was done on me and the EJECTION FRACTION was 55-60%

I was also told by my MD that I could have suffered a mild HEART ATTACK!

THIS was the SECOND TIME I HAVE BEEN TOLD THAT!

SEE LINK HERE………Told I may have had a heart attack!

A few numbers that I thought were disturbing!

MY ejection biplane = 31%

ASCENDING AORTA DIAMETER mine is 3.20. Normal range is 2.02 – 3.07. A BIT HIGH.

LV short axis diastolic 32.90 normal range is 16.20 – 26.79 A BIT HIGH!

LV SHORT AXIS SYSTOLIC AREA 25.60 normal range is 6.90 – 12.97 REALLY HIGH!

LV EJECTION FRACTION 35%

After receiving the lab results I wrote my MD an email to ask questions. He replied with a follow up phone call ONE WEEK LATER.Now we are two weeks out since the ECHO test.

He told me I have HEART FAILURE which means my heart is not pumping correctly to my body. Most likely the cardiologist will give me a diarrhetic to reduce the blood volume. He also added in the conversation “YOU MAY HAVE HAD A MILD HEART ATTACK!”Which I reply,”That is the second time I have heard that from your building!”Four years ago I was sent to EMERGENCY and that doctor said the same thing as she looked into the computer not at my face or chest!See this blog post for that saga……..by clicking HERE.

My MD also told me on this phone call that we cannot reduce the damage to the heart.

I asked how often I should have an echocardiogram his answer was every two years. So why was my last one done in January of 2020?My math skills tell me thats THREE YEARS!

I had a breathing test in between……..I ask about the results from that. The doctors answer is it was fine.Funny as the technician told me I did better with the ALBUTEROL puffs and that they most likely will give me a medication to help me breath! NOT ONE WORD about that!

I can still recall the day she bought it!We were both swooning over it!The cost was $95.00 American dollars.

 I still have it…….

I MISSED IT!

LAST YEAR I FORGOT TO GO LOOK!

I HAVE IT PLANTED DOWN BY THE VEGETABLE BINS……SO OUT OF VIEW.

Waiting to see the cardiologist.

THIS WAS MARCH 17 ,2023………I WAS WAITING TO GO SEE THE CARDIOLOGIST!

I did not wear the hat you will be happy to know only for the GREEN PHOTO!

THE CARDIOLOGIST WHO HAS TAKEN CARE OF ME FOR 20 YEARS!

THE ITALIAN CAME WITH ME AS FOUR EARS IS WAY BETTER THAN MY TWO…….

HE GREETED US. CARDIO DOC AND WENT TO LOOK AT THE PHOTOS ONE MORE TIME……

I GATHERED FROM WHAT HE SAID THEY DO THEIR HOMEWORK THE DAY BEFORE LOOKING UP THE PATIENTS THEY WILL SEE THE FOLLOWING DAY.

I LIKE THAT!

HE CAME BACK SAYING THERE WERE A LOT OF PHOTOS!

I LIKE THAT TOO!

HE AGREED WITH THE DIAGNOSIS!

DAM SHAME!

ALTHOUGH,HE DIDNOT AGREE WITH ME HAVING A MILD HEART ATTACK!

SO GOOD NEWS THERE!

HE EXPLAINED WHAT HEART FAILURE IS AND THAT THERE ARE MEDICINES THAT CAN GIVE THE HEART MORE STRENGTH.HE ALSO SAID HE WOULD LIKE TO DO MORE TESTS ONE OF WHICH IS GOING DOWN THE THROAT WITH A CAMERA………..I HATE THAT ONE!BECAUSE THE FIRST TIME I HAD IT DONE THEY DIDNOT GIVE ME ENOUGH KNOCK OUT MEDS AND I GAGGED ON IT!

A HORRIFIC MEMORY.

SCARRED FOR LIFE FROM THAT!

THE NEXT TEST WILL BE A CARDIAC CATHETERIZATION WHERE THEY ENTER THROUGH YOUR GROIN OR WRIST WITH A CAMERA TO SEE IF THERE IS BLOCKAGE!IF THERE IS THEY WILL DEAL WITH IT BUT MANY TIMES THEY DONOT FIND A CAUSE!LAST TIME I HAD THIS DONE I GOT AN EMBOLISM!I AM NOT YOUR TYPICAL PATIENT!

HE WILL PUT ME ON A BETA BLOCKER………WHICH I HAVE BEEN ON BEFORE!

OF COURSE AN EKG AND BLOODWORK WILL NEED TO BE DONE.

THEN WE WILL GO FROM THERE!

THAT IS THE PLAN FOR NOW.

  XXX

  SCARED NO NOT REALLY………….

DISAPPOINTED…….VERY MUCH!

This is not how I thought I would spend my GOLDEN YEARS……..

Bloody hell Elizabeth, you have been thrown a few curve balls. How utterly worrying. I have to say that I am not impressed with the medical care you are getting. They should monitor you far more closely. I feel very sorry for you. Not that it helps you in any way, but I do.

I’m definitely not a fan of this health news…but I do love the reminiscing photos of you and your boys.
I’m encouraged that your cardiologist has a plan and is optimistic. Stick with this guy…he must be the right person for the job! I encourage you to do all you can to strengthen your body, and most importantly, continue to find joy in your family, friends, pets and garden just as you always have. You’ve much life left to live, and so much joy to continue sharing with your friends and family!

Please read the American Heart Association guidelines for treating heart failure. There are specific medications that should be prescribed dependent on your Ejection Fraction. For an ejection fraction below 40 there are 4 medications. https://www.ahajournals.org/doi/10.1161/CIR.0000000000001063 HFrEF. Heart failure reduced ejection fraction

    VIA EMAIL:

    Dear Elizabeth
I have been following you for many years. Greetings from across the pond. Funnily enough I was diagnosed with heart failure in September 2016. My EF was 17% – it is now 43%. I take 7 tablets a day, probably the same or similar to you. I also have an ICD pacer which I only use a small percentage per check up (twice a year). The EF has stayed at 43 for the last 4 yrs.
At the time I was diagnosed I was having trouble breathing and was breathing heavily – sounding like a frog (!). I was immediately put on a very high dose of diuretics and had to collect my urine in a jug so it could be measured. No dignity when you are ill!
After 4 nights in hospital I was set home with a pile of tablets, introduced to my Heart Failure Nurse who was funded by a charity – the British Heart Foundation. I was given a large book which has been my health bible ever since. I saw my nurse weekly initially, then gradually reduced over 3 yrs. Basically eat a healthy diet, watch the fluids and take some exercise. I now see my HF consultant once a year and she does an ECG and an echocardiogram. She added another tablet this year hence the 7 a day.
I do get very tired some days but do manage to walk my dogs every day. An Old English Sheepdog and a cocker spaniel. We also have a 15yr old cat. We used to have 8 hens but we got overrun by rats in the garden and when we were down to 3 we found a new home for them. I used to love going down to collect the eggs and how they would rush round chattering away. But the rats were all over the garden and even in our garage. We had 2 cats at the time and they couldn’t keep the numbers down!
Sorry I have warbled on but I wanted to let you know that although this sounds like an awful sentence, if you take the meds and look after yourself it is possible to get better! It just takes time.
Take care and my very best wishes to you and your family.

    Regards

    Fiona

    Our Carissima Contessa,

I am BEYOND saddened by this news! I just don’t understand it .. I see all your BEAUTIFUL photos that you share with us and I just keep shaking my head….this should NOT be happening to you as you have CLEARLY ALWAYS been in TIP TOP SHAPE! Did you ask the cardiologist if this is something genetic? Can you remember any relative with similar affliction? I am just hoping that they can fortify your heart now after all that testing. My thoughts are with you and I am sending you SO MUCH LOVE your way, Dear Elizabeth! I cannot wait for you to enjoy your Beautiful and colourful garden!

    VIA EMAIL:

    Dear Elizabeth,

I’m a new reader and became aware of your blog last year, via Janet from “The Gardener’s Cottage”. We are the same age and share a love of animals, gardening and decorating, plus being an empath dealing with multiple health issues at age 63! I can relate to so much of what you share in your blog.

After a recent hospital stay I started reading your blog in detail and discovered that you were an American living in California and the same age as me! I’d had no idea, ha. This is a little long for a comment, so I thought I’d start here with an email.

I share your surprise and frustration at what we’re going through with health challenges at our age. It is all so unexpected and to me sometimes feels like it’s happening to someone else!

I’m so sorry to learn of your latest heart health challenge and hope it can be managed through testing and medications. You and your husband are your very best advocates in keeping track of what you’ve been through and what your symptoms and needs are. We’ve recently started the “four ears are better than two” approach to doctor’s appointments here too.

I had a heart attack in Dec 2021 (what, who, me?!) So surprising. Felt like indigestion but would not let up and lasted for 90 minutes, a squeezing in the center of my chest. Anyway, I mention that so other women can be aware. At the hospital they check your heart for a specific protein that denotes a heart attack, then they check it again a few hours later and if it’s elevated then they know it was a heart attack. Also a note for other women- it was a non-blockage heart attack, apparently caused by an accumulation of years of stress, a type of heart attack mostly suffered by women (empaths and caregivers!).

Just recently, I’d come home from a hysterectomy, after a less than restful hospital stay. I had to laugh (and cry) reading your account of the similar experiences we shared while in the hospital during the same week, at opposite ends of California. Very noisy staff and near constant interruption of rest all night long! On my second day a giant jackhammer started up directly out my window just as I finally nodded off. I could see it right out the window from my bed on the second floor! All this, in a hospital just for women and babies.

As you mentioned today, we also share a terrible endoscopy experience, without enough sedation, like some kind of medieval torture. One valium taken 3 hours before the procedure was useless. It really does scar you for life. So the next time 3 years later, I requested to be totally knocked out and that worked great.

I was so sorry when you lost your beloved companion Banksy, what a pig he was! What a beautiful life he had with you and your family.

So that’s it for now. Thanks for sharing your life with us, all with grace and humor.

    Your fellow 1960 gal,

    Brenda 🙂

So glad you saw the cardiologist !!!!
Yes, get the cardiac catheterization. Other than waiting a few hours afterwards (you used to have sandbags on your groin for 8-10 hours), now a plug and a few hours only. It will tell more…Diuretics help(not at night though) unless you want to be up. I take propranolol (Inderal)-Beta Blocker twice a day, and it has helped. But for many it can make you tired….I doubt if I would know what causes my tiredness anyway since I am always tired. Ha, ha…
You look great and have a marvelous spirit. I think that is half the battle in getting better. Positivity, and you have it in spades. You rock.
Keep us all posted please, and enjoy the blooms as they come out. My nose runs over at the moment – Spring is really here. Enjoy the healing sun, and the beauty of your yard…

Contessa … I was surprised and disappointed to hear this latest update. You’ve really been through it. I like your cardiologist though. He sounds thorough and attentive … qualities lacking is some of the other medical professionals you’ve had the (dis)pleasure to deal with. Qualities that give on confidence in his recommendations. All these photos of your and your kiddos are marvelous … Contessa should have been a fashion model. I still think of your Banksy daily, and I’m sure the house is quiet without him. I wonder what your other critters think. Keep us posted and follow doctors orders … while your heart may be giving you trouble, it’s no match for your strong will. Stay strong, Contessa … your tribe is pulling for you. xo

My brother has told me that we need to make adjustments as we age. I laughed and told him that at 68 I feel I have already made enough! I feel for you and I hope that you have excellent care that allows you to thrive and dance in your wonderful life for many, many, many years. Is it me, or have you been looking at and sharing more photos from the past? We do that as we get older, don’t we? Keep looking forward, dear Contessa. There is much yet to enjoy.

    Hello Elizabeth,

I was so taken back when I read all about your current heart issues. It sounds like your doctor is all over it
now. Investigating through procedures is what good doctors do. I understand it is not fun however necessary. Bless your heart, you have been through so much and still keep such an uplifting attitude. You are in my thoughts, well wishes and prayers as you proceed ahead with the tests.

I loved the pictures you shared, just wonderful. How you styled yourself heading to the doctors appointment was so you. I would think you were the doctors bright spot of the day.

    Sending TLC

    Elizabeth,
You have a wonderful way with words and you are a genuine and gracious woman. I find myself getting very emotional reading about your health struggles…it just seems so unfair that you are having so many problems.
I hope that the heart specialist can find a way to keep your heart safe.
Life is truly precious and we must be grateful for every day…you have such a zest for life and a flair for fun.
Hope that you find some answers and can get back to better health soon.
In the meantime enjoy your garden and know that many of your readers are thinking of you.

    Dear Contessa,
Thank you for sharing your life with us. Your passion and creative expressions are inspiring. It hurts to hear you are going through such health challenges. The frustration with holding the unknown and trying to unveil solutions from many medical disciplines. I recently heard on NPR that AI diagnostics can go through hundreds of med. options. The result being possible plans being more effective. Perhaps some Robot will join your Care team. Grabbing at ideas. Where is Dr. House when he might be useful?
In any case, keep questioning and gathering strength in Love and numbers. You have even more Loving Fans than you may realize. I am one. Sending intentions with Love and support from Oakland.
