February News!

February 27, 2024 77 Comments

I AM ON MY WAY TO PILATES REFORMER………..and realize OLAF and I MATCH!

First things FIRST!I want to THANK A lot of YOU for leaving me a comment on YOUR AGE and the fact YOU enjoy reading my words and like my photos! Most blogger’s love to hear feedback on what has been put out there to share!MY INSTINCTS were SPOT on as I like to say……………as far as MY AGE GROUP VIEWERS!

I HAVE ALWAYS LIKED MY AUDIENCE BUT EVEN MORE NOW!

Most of YOU get a KICK out of me and I KNOW THAT.I am not your NORMAL 63 year old.MInd you I never saw myself as DIFFERENT from the rest of YOU!But over the years I realize there is something OFF with me! I am DIFFERENT.Especially when I am told “THEY NEVER GOT YOU!”By someone who has known me for 40 years!

I DON’T THINK I EVER GOT MYSELF!I HAD A FEW INTERESTS AND DIDNOT ENJOY SCHOOL LIKE I SHOULD HAVE.I WAS DREAMING OF CASTLES AND COTTAGES AND FARM ANIMALS AT AN EARLY AGE.

I SO WANTED TO BE A PROFESSIONAL BALLET DANCER BUT FAILED THOSE REQUIREMENTS…….

I REMEMBER MY FATHER TAKING ME TO CANADA TO TRY OUT FOR THE BALLET SCHOOL THERE.

I DIDNOT MAKE IT AND CAN REMEMBER BEING SO SCARED AT THE AUDITION.

HE THEN FOUND A BALLET TEACHER ON MARKET STREET in San Francisco WHO HAD A STUDIO AND SHE TOOK ME IN FOR PRIVATE BALLET LESSONS!

THAT DIDNOT CHANGE A THING!

In fact, I do BELIEVE I witness the teacher pulling my Father aside to tell him you are wasting your time and money!

THE HAIR WAS THICK AT 16!

I recently had glass replaced in a frame of myself as a FOUR YEAR OLD and the FRAMER found this photo behind the viewed photo!

I was in a modeling school on MAIDEN LANE in San Francisco at the time.

I recall the photographer asking me to un-button the top button of the blouse!

I was hesitant!

I HAD NO BOOBS!

A retainer did the trick for the gap in the teeth!

THE HAIR!

Let’s discuss THE HAIR!

I had it done on MAIDEN LANE in San Francisco at a place called YOSH.

VERY EXPENSIVE!

I HATED IT THEN as the bangs or FRINGE was even shorter!

Way above my eyebrows!

I DIDNOT DO BANGS FOR A VERY LONG TIME THERE AFTER!

I am sure YOU can UNDERSTAND WHY!

STAG HORN FERNS GROWN BY A DEAR FRIEND!

THIS IS THE ITALIAN with the second load!

An entire wall is being built to HOLD one of these BEAUTIES!

THEY WEIGH over ONE HUNDRED POUNDS EACH SAYS THE ITALIAN.

WE SCORED A FEW.

LET ME KNOW IF YOU ARE INTERESTED IN PURCHASING ONE!

THEY WILL NOT BE CHEAP just telling you up front.

I am helping a friend out and am not the one making the prices.A plant SPECIALIST is doing that.

NO dollars go into THE CONTESSA’s pockets………….to be clear.

YOU can email me if you are in THE Bay Area.

EMAIL: iolacontessa@gmail.com

Here is my GUEST BATHROOM.

Which I am very fond of………

I painted the entire room with a SEA SPONGE.

The sink I paid $40.00 for and was offered $600.00!

I had to buy REPRODUCTION FAUCETS for it but I do like the effect!

As I went to use this room I chuckled as MY ITALIAN had left his cappuccino cup on HIS SHELF!

Which in it’s day was an old TRIVIT for an iron stove.

It is one of MY FAVORITE FINDS and I still can recall how much I paid for it!

$12.00.

My thought was for the soap in the shower, but THAT ITALIAN had other ideas!

He made it useful.

TWO WAYS………..PAPER and coffee cup holder!

It’s a bit of a challenge for me to change the paper so THATS HIS JOB!

This is THE SHOWER which never gets used as SAINT FRANCIS of ASSISI resides there!

The small bench I found in ITALY in the early 1990’s………….

THE CROWN was made by THAT woman THE RIBBONED CROWN way back in THE DAY!

I do think she has retired from social media and CREATING!

THE BOOKS I COLLECT and prop up on VELVET foot stools; I had found in my days of HUNTING!

REMINDER………I had a STORE so MY JOB WAS TO SHOP!

I donot ENJOY shopping so much anymore………..

YOU KNOW WHY?

I either OWN it or I SOLD it or have SEEN it!

THERE IS NOT MUCH OUT THERE I HAVE NOT VIEWED……….

PIZZA BIANCA………MADE BY THE ITALIAN last weekend!

ABSOLUTELY DELICIOUS!

NO!

It is NOT GLUTEN FREE and of course I shouldn’t be eating SALT due to the HEART!

SO, I PASSED on this……………I did make his lunch on Monday and took a small BITE out of his sandwich!

Let’s just say I am doing QUALITY CONTROL on the TASTE LEVEL!

I call these LOVE BITES!

Which my latest News is my LEGS have started to SWELL!

DUE TO WATER RETENTION.

THIS IS A BIG RED FLAG ON CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE.

THEY TELL YOU UP FRONT TO WATCH FOR WEIGHT GAIN AND SWELLING OF THE LEGS AND ANKLES.

ANY ADVISE THERE IS APPRECIATED.

I find it HORRIFYING!

I found a LYMPHATIC Drainage Massage person.

Plus, I have had for years the compression stockings as I have my MOTHER’s VARICOSE VEINS.

Most of the WATER RETENTION IS IN MY THIGHS!

I am not ready for ALL OF THIS CHANGE!

JUST NOT READY……………

Let’s get to the fun stuff shall we?

This is how I entertain myself!

JUST CALL ME THE STACKER!

I HAVE USED THREE NECKLACES TO MAKE ONE!

IT ADDS A BIT OF GIRTH IN MY OPINION AND HELPS ME STAND UP STRAIGHT!

WHICH I NEED TO WORK ON!

THIS IS BEST TO DO ON A TURTLENECK AS THAT WORKS AS YOUR CANVAS.

GO TO IT LADIES and see what YOU CAN ACHIEVE!

ONE STAG HORN FERN HAS BEEN HUNG!

This plant is about 55 years old.

THE WEATHER HAS WARMED UP HERE AND WE ARE GETTING OUTSIDE TO SUN AND TAKE IN THE NEW GROWTH OF THE GARDEN!

STAY TUNED FOR OUR PRICELESS PHOTOS AND SHENANIGANS.

PS. OLAF HAS LOST WEIGHT!

HOW MUCH WE WILL NEVER KNOW BUT HE IS LOOKING SLIM!

AT LEAST I ACCOMPLISHED THAT IN FIVE MONTHS TIME!

NOT MUCH ELSE; but I have come to terms with myself. It’s okay not to want to clean out a drawer or do the laundry as long as I get MYSELF out of bed in the MORNINGS LIFE IS GOOD!

ONE FOOT IN FRONT OF THE OTHER IS KEY!

Are you taking Pilates? I’ve had three private lessons and it’s one of the hardest things I’ve ever done and I’m limber and in great shape. There are a couple of exercises where I just want to get up and walk out the door and never come back, but I can see positive changes already! Amazing!

The stag horn fern is magnificent! Fifty-five years old? I wouldn’t want to be responsible if it started to decline on my watch. I’d feel guilty forever and a day, but I know you and the Italian will take great care of it.

I think you look fabulous and you amaze me with all you do… like Pilates and going to the antique show in San Francisco. Please continue to take care of yourself. I love you sweet lady! Brenda

Adore everything, always… I don’t think I answered your last post… usually never miss, but often tardy : ) I told my kids last year I was turning 70, but I was off by a year (I know–an early sign of dementia– made me laugh so hard when my son broke it to me that I was a year younger, my husband didn’t even realize–but better younger than older! Your photos are GORGEOUS–in technicolor (do they still use that word?!) Slim Olaf and his mom twinning in gray, the orange bathroom (swooning, may have to paint my half bath), the saint in the shower, the cupholder over tpaper (someone should design and sell these), the magnificent staghorns, ETC. But concerned about the swelling, I wear stockings to work to help with that (in FL!) Suggest compression knee highs, but v. hard to pull up I have heard. You are the Unsinkable Contessa… and you inspire, entertain, inform, and humor us all. Lucky us!! XOXO PS Sad to read about Iris Afpel’s death, but at 102, wow …. you channel her ‘style’ so much!!!

Dear Elizabeth, I had never heard of a stag horn before today. So I’ve learnt something new. You and Olaf look cute together. He’s a sweetheart.
Please go and check the swelling out. It’s generally not a good sign.

The weather has been warm all winter here with just a few days here and there when it got really cold. We had a thunderstorm today and I enjoyed it immensely.

I keep wondering whether I will ever blog again. It seems I’ve lost the passion for it. I think yours is the only blog I comment on.

Wishing you a wonderful weekend. it’s almost here again 🙂

    Dear Elizabeth,

Your blog is always such a delight to read and to be in awe of your stories and photos. You’re so good with being positive even though you’re dealing with the health issues. I can only imagine how worrisome they must be.

When I was a young girl I wanted to be a ballet dancer (like many young girls) but my parents couldn’t afford the lessons with having 5 kids, plus my neighbour was a prima ballerina who warned me that it was an awful life. No social life, etc so she discouraged me. Maybe in my next life.

Sending healing love to you and hope to see you in July! I’ll be arriving on June 26th and be in CA for almost 4 weeks before flying to my family in Seattle.

    Love,

    Karenxoxo

I LOVE your decorating style! Getting up in the morning and enjoying a cup of coffee is just so incredibly hopeful in the face of what life hands us. I’m not sure about the leg swelling? Wow, you look especially lovely in the photos today! That grey suits you, and your makeup is so soft and pretty. Another commenter said that you had a twinkle in your eye, and I see it, too. Whatever you are doing, keep doing it, because it’s helping you from the inside out.

I learned that the Brits say “fringe” because “bangs” has some naughty connotations. I was traumatized at a young age by my mother cutting my and my sister’s bangs/fringe SO SHORT. I look at old photos and want to sob. I think she was trying to save time by not having to cut them very often, but, my gosh, what scars that left on us.

The Italian looks very handsome next to the massive ferns; how impressive that he is putting them on a wall! They would not survive outdoors here in the winter. I have a really nice one inside.

Congratulations to Olaf on his weight loss! He is positively svelte.

Pilates has been a fav of mine for many years. I have a reformer and I used to have a chair, but got rid of it to make room for a bike. Anyway, I do hope you are feeling better. It’s a chore for me!
Sometimes I wonder how much time I spend on self-care between brushing my teeth flossing, cleaning my face cream up, etc. I think I’ll keep a record of that just for the fun of it what percentage of the day is devoted to me!!!

Olaf you and your mom look fabulous. Olaf, I hope you aren’t feeling hungry. Ohh what we sacrifice for beauty (and health).
Contessa I love the story of your father trying so hard to help your dream, of dance, come true.
Largest Stag-horns I’ve ever seen. So happy they get to have a new home, thanks to your Italian (work horse) those are heavy.
So sorry you are experiencing swelling. I hope the Pilates help you with that ‘current’ problem with your heart condition. I agree at 63 to young to hear congestive heart. Of course, you are doing all the right things to manage it.
Hoping spring renews you as you show us all your lovely California garden.
Love the bathroom color and that sink is special. You do have nice bathroom sinks.
Loved your picture find. Oh yes I have the dreaded bangs picture too. It leaves a deep scar lol.

Well having the right attitude is half the battle. You face a lot, but always with some humor – and that will get you pretty far, in my opinion.
It’s not always easy every day but I think it’s worth it.
Those stag horn ferns are amazing and I would have bought one, if they had been there when I was! I love them, so exotic. On second thought I don’t think the frost we get here would be good for them. So, never mind!
The necklaces are perfect. You have a strong neck. I can’t take any weight there. But I do love to stack my bracelets! I just don’t do it quite with the same panache as you!

Live, love laugh! A little every day!

    Hi Elizabeth,

I love the picture of you and Olaf, it’s so sweet. You coordinate so well. Good for you heading to Pilates class.

What a beautiful picture of you as a 16 year old. You are still blessed with beautiful thick hair.
I enjoyed hearing your desire to become a ballerina. I know Maiden Lane in SF I remember it so well. When I was working on Market Street I became friends with a jewelry designer who wound up designing a gorgeous ring for me. It’s one of a kind and I get compliments on it often because it’s unusual.

I hope the swelling in your upper leg does not continue. I understand how this can be very disconcerting. You remain in my well wishes.

    Elizabeth ,

The beauty of being a little different!

Maiden Lane and Yosh…have not thought of those wonderful places in a long time.

For me, it was Elizabeth Leonard’s modeling school in Seattle.

Amazing how a stunningly beautiful 16-year-old girl has any self doubt about how she looks…long bangs and all.

Sharing your flamboyant and fun loving self is a joy we all share in, a gift of pure delight.

In gratitude! And thanks for a few long lost memories!

    Hi there.
I love reading about how you approach life and all its twists and turns. Keep your head up and wear necklaces seems like a good guide to living well!
I live in oakland, California- and am interested in a staghorn. Could you please give your friend my email address so I can follow through?
    Thanks much

I had a similar haircut back in the day! I could not grow it out fast enough! And I also had my hair cut at Yosh. First in San Francisco, then in Palo Alto, and then they opened a salon in San Jose.
So sorry to hear of your new health issues. Even with all of that, you look fabulous!

Dear Elizabeth, I adore your guest bathroom, i could move straight in and live there! (Particularly as I have slight incontinence problems due to old age and many children). I notice that among the books in your bathroom you have a copy of “More is more” Is that by Iris Apfel ? I really admire her style and eccentricity .
I must say that I think you are looking better these days perhaps your health troubles are settling down I hope. You have a certain light in your eyes, and seem to be enjoying life more which is so nice to see.
Very best wishes and many thanks for your wonderful blog .

Elizabeth, I am so sorry to read of your continued health issues. Sending you a big hug. I love how your dad did his best to help you pursue your ballet dream – what a wonderful dad. And what’s up with that photographer asking a girl to unbutton her blouse one button – good grief. At 65, I enjoy looking at my old photos – even photos from 20 years ago make me smile and finally appreciate myself back then. PS: You keep doing you wonderful you – cuz everybody else is taken.

    Good morning!
I was GIFTED (can you believe it?) a Stag’s Horn about 15 years ago. At the time, that plant was about 15 years old, so not quite as old as the ones you have now. It is truly one of my very favorites!
As you know, I’m in Upstate New York with my mom these days. So that means, for now, I have caretakers out west for the animals and the plants.
I love when objects get repurposed into something uniquely useful. I don’t do a lot of clutter, but I love to display my collection of favorite objects and tokens of interest.
Here at the lake house, my mom has a wonderful collection of very old crocks. Some of them hold between 15 and 20 gallons! We use them as storage containers for grains, beans, flour, sugar!
My mom has experienced swollen legs, as well. My only advice to her is the more fluids you are drinking, the more you are peeing. In her case, it keeps the swelling to a minimum. Lots of herbal teas and water splashed with cranberry juice are her two favorites.
As always, sending you un abbraccio forte,
    La Zingara, Diana XOX

If one is in HEART FAILURE you donot want to be drinking lots of fluids!!!So I was told!I drink maybe a glass a day!!My cocktail at night is cranberry and water!Except when I’m living LARGE 7-up!
I don’t think your mother is in heart failure as she seems to be doing well!
The heart has to work harder to get that liquid out of your body.
      The crocks sound wonderful.
Always a GOOD USE FOR THE OLD STUFF!

You’re a lucky lady to have gotten your hands on such a good looking Stag-horn fern. I collect them and if I was In the USA I would Certainly have acquired one and yes they are very expensive. Mine here in SA were also not cheap by any matter of means.
I am Really sorry to hear about your on going health issues.
Absolutely love the Italian’s cappuccino cup support but it would be me who would change the loo roll as I am persnickety about which way the paper hangs over the roll. I like It to roll over and not be pulled from underneath the roll.
    Lots of hugs to you.

I share the leg-swelling ‘thing” with you… and my kidney doctor and dermatologist BOTH told me to get support hose… ugh. Turns out I absolutely love them!
They give me so much energy throughout the day. I have them in mid-weight sheer nude and sheer black (of course those are my favorites) I feel like a jazz dancer in them!

Those ferns are amazing. How does the Italian mount them with such weight? In awe.
Great story on ballet. I took up tap at 60 and was in with young kids as only adult. Never looked back. I say go for it!
Keep legs higher than heart for swelling. Behave.

Well you look marvelous to me! And your guest bath???…well I could be in there for hours looking at all the amazing finds that adorn your tiny little space! Pilates is really the best exercise for our age. It strengthens and stretches our once beautiful and elegant bodies! Hey I’m all in for the “ how many necklaces and bracelets can you wear” contest. But you know me too well to think that I would not be weighted down without a few pounds of pearls on!!! Love you to bits and talk soon girlfriend. We are just waiting for our twin grandsons to appear in this world! Very excited to meet Luca and Owen after 9 months.

Before my mother-in-law passed away at 96, she always said that when you have your health, you have everything. Now that I am 70, I understand what she meant.

Cara Contessa, your reminiscence of girlhood ballet lessons is similar to my own. I was a chunky little thing, far from sylph-like. Nevertheless, it’s thanks to ballet exercises, I have good posture and strong legs, at 82.
( pity about the hideous feet )

Hello Contessa, I absolutely love those special ferns! I am sure that they will thrive for you. Whose portrait is that on the bathroom wall with all the small artworks? He looks familiar! The best reason to take ballet (or any other) lessons is because it would give you pleasure and insight into that art form, whether or not you become a professional. Once I had an opportunity to borrow a bassoon for a week or so. I taught myself the basic fingerings and scales, then plowed into the Mozart bassoon concerto. I’m sure Mozart was spinning in his grave, but I learned something and had loads of fun.
