GARDEN ACTIVITY.

April 7, 2026 102 Comments

As SPRING begins to arrive here in Northern California; I delight in snapping a few photos of the GARDEN.The garden brings JOY and SOLACE to most in one way or another.I have not been able to work in my garden now for many years. When I take a stroll I see things that have taken OFF; since last I planted them many years ago.

My garden was built by my ITALIAN and ME!I knew nothing about gardening but would read those catalogs that use to come in the mail from beginning to end.I would visit my local nurseries (I had THREE to FREQUENT) which are in a 2 mile radius.I would read the labels of plants and note if they liked sun or shade.I would PURCHASE only the plants that spoke to me!

Plus I had a color scheme.YELLOW and WHITE.

Not easy having something blooming all year round when you limit yourself to TWO COLORS.But it was a fun challenge for me TO TRY!

Another factor for me was it had to have a FRAGRANCE!That is even harder to find in white and yellow color combo!

Never less, I enjoyed gardening for many years.Until I could not because of the head and neck movement.

Remember, the EYE EPISODES I use to have where I would lose my vision and feel FAINT and have a headache for up to TWO DAYS?Well, those were fixed by a CERVICAL SPINE CHIROPRACTOR a year ago APRIL 13 th!

MY ONE YEAR ANNIVERSARY IS UPON ME and I am thinking I need something SPECIAL!!

LIKE A PUPPY or a GEM!

A PINK PEONY from my garden was opened for EASTER just ONE but I will take it!

Do you know the ANTS open the BUD?

I think I tell YOU that every year!

THEY DO!

I read that somewhere years ago and I always LOOK to see if it’s TRUE!

MY GRANDCHILDREN on SPRING BREAK……………….soon to be 6,9 and 11 years old.

ALL THREE BORN IN MAY!

I LOVED the MONTH OF MAY growing up being it was MAY DAY and you know what to DO ON MAY DAY right?Make baskets or cans of FLOWERS and deliver to your neighbors, by ringing their doorbell and running away! Also, it was GINNA’s birthday in my neighborhood. Her birthday was on MAY 16 th. I have NEVER FORGOTTEN.Recently I tried to FIND A FRIEND from ELEMENTARY SCHOOL who’s birthday fell on MARCH 18.So, I googled and found her FATHER’s obituary which somehow led me to her phone number on the internet!I called on MARCH 18, only to get her voicemail.I left a message hoping to hear back!I was SO EXCITED ABOUT FINDING HER!

AND I DID.

We will meet up in MAY for the first time since middle school!

Let’s NOT DO THE MATH on how many years since we last saw each other!

THE NEW PLANTER BOXES made by THE ITALIAN all by himself.

Of course I LOST a LOT OF MY SHASTA DAISIES FOR THESE BOXES…………….GRRR.

The more I read about the chemicals and what they wash the lettuce in before selling it makes me want to eat OUR OWN FOOD!

He even has SIGNAGE!

I did not NOTICE the plastic bag over the signage when I snapped this photo!

But you know what that is for………..ugly,but hey it is PRACTICAL!

But do we really NEED A SIGN Telling us what we PLANTED?

HE THOUGHT THEY WERE CUTE so I’M GOING WITH IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Checking for the flower that produces the artichoke!

The ITALIAN is now my gardener and WATER BOY ;I am having a hard time with THAT!He loves to cut EVERYTHING BACK even in SPRING when it’s starting to BLOOM!AND he ties plants up that should be CASCADING OVER AND JUST BEING THEMSELVES………….

LOOK AT THIS UGLY CONTRAPTION!Even the plant looks AWFUL.

This was BEAUTIFUL! Sprawling over the dirt everywhere and HE TIES IT UP WITH PLASTIC RIBBON and even puts REBAR’S in to HOLD IT!YOU COULD HAVE HEARD MY GASP OF DISLIKE IN NEW YORK CITY!

He threatens to do MORE TRIMMING to give me a HEART ATTACK if I want to GO SOONER!

HE IS DRIVING ME MAD, MAD ,MAD!

BUT ONLY IN THE GARDEN.

WHO CAN NAME THIS PLANT?

Tell me in the comments and I will answer YOU right or wrong.

Plus,I will tell you if you guessed correctly.

CONTESSA and her DOGGY BETTY!

We gave an EGG HUNT for the TODDLERS on THE COURT this year!

Ages TWO and SOON to be FOUR!

It was coffee and Gluten Free donut holes and pastries for the adults!

WHO KNEW THAT WHOLE FOODS has GLUTEN FREE DONUT HOLES IN THE FREEZER SECTION?

NOT ME!

I could have EATEN THE WHOLE BOX!It has been TWO DECADES SINCE I HAD A DONUT if not longer………THANK YOU ANNIE!

READY FOR THE HUNT…………..

This vintage table I bought in LUCCA ,ITALY at the antique show that is the first weekend of every month!

Anybody know is that STILL A THING?

I put it in my BIG BLACK LUGGAGE which I had bought in KOBE, JAPAN in 1981!

WE STILL HAVE IT!

45 years later……………..of course the table folds down to just the round bit!

I had it in the house for years…………my bet is the SONS WILL TOSS IT!

LINDA, please come and get it and put it up at HEALDSBURG!!

That would make me very happy!

As you can see the EGG HUNT went very well! The little girl would OPEN EACH EGG as she found it and look!Which might explain WHY he has MORE!But NOT BY MUCH!She loved her DRESS which had FLOWERS and BUNNIES on it!I thought the SAND PAILS were more practical than BASKETS for this age group! Then again I did my pre-shopping at THE DOLLAR STORE………….am I the last one to know NOTHING IS A DOLLAR there anymore?!!I did some MASSIVE BUYING for HOME and THIS EVENT only to have been handed a receipt over ONE HUNDRED DOLLARS!!

TOTALLY WORTH IT………BUT CHANGE THE NAME OF THE G– D– STORE!!!

Before EASTER I had the GRANDCHILD who lives near us for a few hours. In order not to ruin the hunt EXPERIENCE I told her I had HID the EGGS and we would have a PRACTICE RUN for SUNDAY.As I had gotten the EASTER items out to decorate; I thought THAT WOULD BE SOMETHING FUN TO DO WITH HER.

FUN does not even come close to DESCRIBING THE JOY we ALL HAD……………

DO YOU THINK WE SAW THE EASTER BUNNY?!!

EVERY PHOTO THE ITALIAN TOOK I HAD MY MOUTH WIDE OPEN!!!

I know I PROMISED this POST to be of the GARDEN but things aren’t OPENED YET.

Give my garden a couple MORE WEEKS and it should be in BLOOM!

Just back from KAISER with a new LUNG ACCESSORY to do TWICE A DAY!It requires a THREE STEP PROCESS should take less than ten minutes. That is to be done TWICE A DAY.

I choose to go OFF the LATEST HEART MEDICINE which was keeping blood pressure at a good number only because it is not doing ANYTHING TO STRENGTHEN THE HEART says the cardiologist who is covering for mine as she is OUT OF THE OFFICE and no one seems to know when she will be back!

REMEMBER, I discovered ENTRESTO a heart med that has only been around for 11 years and is the ONE I NEED MOST it was the culprit for my cough.I went off it and within 8 days the cough was GONE!I am now back on it and day TWO THE COUGH IS BACK……………….let’s hope the LUNG ACCESSORY and new exercises reduce the mucus and the coughing so I CAN LIVE A NORMAL LIFE AT LEAST WHAT IS LEFT!

I AM SLOWING DOWN AT A FAST RATE NOW……………but they told me THREE years ago I was in CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE so maybe I CAN HOLD OFF THE NEXT CHAPTER FOR THREE MORE YEARS!I just GOOGLED IT.

I probably should have NOT DONE THAT.

“ABOUT 50% of people diagnosed with heart failure die within 5 years.”

SAID MY PHONE.

“Survival rates are higher for younger patients. Those under 65 have roughly a 79% five-year survival rate , compared to about 50% for those 75 and older.

LET’s NOT DO THE MATH HERE EITHER…………….at least I was in the “UNDER 65” range when I was told.

THAT MEANS I HAVE TWO MORE YEARS LEFT to entertain you and SHARE things with YOU.

I ADORE YOU ALL EVEN THOSE OF YOU WHO NEVER COMMENT OR EMAIL.

THIS HAS BEEN A FABULOUS WAY FOR ME TO CONNECT WITH OTHERS over THE YEARS.

I CONNECTED WITH A WOMAN IN LOUISIANA YESTERDAY WHO HAS MY LUNG ISSUES TOO because her friend FOLLOWS MY BLOG and INSTAGRAM.I got some really GOOD information from her and found out THE WOMAN who follows me painted every room in her house CHARTREUSE!!!

MY FAVORITE COLOR!

AS I TOLD MY HUBBY LAST NITE THIS IS SO MUCH FUN FOR ME!

HUGS and XXX’s,

YOUR CONTESSA

KEEP SCROLLING DOWNWARDS TO LEAVE ME A COMMENT.

YOUR COMMENTS MAKE ME VERY HAPPY!

I HOPE YOU KNOW THAT……………I feel like we know each other even though I have never met you!

DONE BY CINDY CELLUCCI BACK IN 1992 when we lived in FLORENCE, ITALY.

FOR FATHER’S DAY.

THOSE WERE THE BEST OF TIMES.

I am feeling a bit MELANCHOLY TODAY.

Seems we are going to OBLITERATE a country TONIGHT!

ANY THOUGHTS ON THAT?

I APOLOGIZE TO EVERYONE AS MOST OF US DONOT STAND WITH HIM!

I don’t think I need to tell YOU what kind of person he is.

YOU CAN EASILY SEE BY HIS ACTIONS AND LIMITED VOCABULARY.

I AM ABSOLUTELY TERRIFIED FOR THE WORLD and MY CHILDREN.

    Hi Elizabeth,

First of all — my mother was diagnosed with congestive heart failure when she was about 67 and lived until she was 89 (almost 90). It doesn’t matter what the statistics are! Keep your joyful outlook on life – realize that someone has to keep the Italian in line and it had better be you!
Your blog brings so much joy to me – I love the garden photos – even more so since we had 10 inches of snow today. yesterday my hepaticas were starting to bloom and today they are under snow. I love snow but really this is too much. A friend and I were talking the other day and I mentioned I felt I’d really missed the boat – I should have married a man who can fix everything, shovel snow AND garden. I should have had my own Italian! While the world has been in a disastrous state I really enjoyed watching the space crew and all the joy they had. Keep on keeping on.

      Hello!

Thank you for your blog. I saw you on Homeworthy and by the end of the show I felt a kinship with you. I looked up your blog, ( which I love) and found out we have the same birthday! I’m wondering if we were even born in the same year…1962? Love your colorful clothes as well. Have you ever seen the Swedish designer Gudrun Sjoden? She has interesting things as well. Many blessings!

You are far too dear………………..letting us inside your home, garden, life, family, health.

On to more important life facts.

    Lettuce.

Quit lettuce fiasco 2 years ago. Now I use the light green small cabbage heads.

Oh my gosh, it is GOOD ..

Cut for a good salad, no one knows unless you tell them.

Let me know what you think, after you try it !!!!!

Zero clue what weather portends …. middle rural Georgia already needing rain, temps warm, with cooler temps coming back in a few days. Rather discombobulated on its own.

Thankful of your Italian. BOY, there’s a price for Garden Help ! Never But Never ….seen things tied up that need no …… no worries, he loves gardening, he loves you, so he’s fabulous to me.

Cabbage!!I use often as a vegetable slice it thin sauté in olive oil and garlic then sprinkle a few bread crumbs on it!
Delicious!I will try your idea for salad!
May I ask what kind of dressing do you use?
I hope you are doing well!

Elizabeth, your flower garden is a bit of daily joy right out your door! Just open the door wide and step outside when you need a distraction from the stress and challenges of health and politics. Spending time with your grandchildren, connecting with an old friend and hosting an Easter egg hunt are uplifting Spring activities too. I recently reconnected with a former neighbor I have not seen in a long time and it was great catching up. I need The Italian to give me tips on how to get my newly retired husband to spend more time outside spiffing up our property and not just playing golf 🙂

    Hi Elizabeth,
I know you are struggling with your health.Do not give up, you have many more years ahead of you. I hope the new treatment will be very helpful.
Your garden is always beautiful, no matter what time of year. It will be blooming like crazy soon. Even my containers on the back deck have so many rose blossoms. I love this time of year!
I always left flowers on May Day. I would make paper cones to put them in like little vases. That was so much fun and a special memory.

Easter was just me this year. Kind of lonely but I got through it. I can’t complain because my girls and I had just returned from a trip together. Six whole days with my daughters was the best! Now I am back preparing for the wedding. Trying to be creative and add my personal touch wherever Chloe’ wants it!

Love your “May Flowers” they are growing so fast.
Brilliant idea trial run for Easter Egg Hunt. Then hosting the neighbors, you are sweet. You must be very popular with all the children. Yours and others.
Retired husband that stays home that is constantly working on home and garden not to mention all entertaining is awesome. It does have a downside. They change a very good system that has worked for years. I guess it’s a give and take. Let go of some? and get healthy homegrown vegetables. Loved the yelled part I’m sure I heard it and echo it. My husband is a golfer, bird shooter, fisherman and traveler. So…. It’s working out okay. However, he is not any help at home. A trade off.
Your health news (as I’ve spoken to you) is it appears manageable and you are understanding it all more. That is helpful. Goggle can be helpful but terrifying all in one when it comes to health. I am careful to not goggle when I’m in a vulnerable state. In fact, since I’m now 71 I opt for a natural approach to my health when at all possible. My heart will not change my age will advance and I’m choosing quality over quantity now. We all have to find that balance for ourselves. I never advise meds I take or not take because I’m the person that does not go to the doctor. I do feel and understand the journey. You are your best advocate and I’m impressed with the journey how much joy you pull out of life everyday. Huge kudos to you.
The current state of affairs in Washington. It’s like a reality show that you are sick to death of and ashamed of watching.
Oh hope you get to see the chartreuse house in Louisiana. No one does color or celebration of life better than those from Louisiana.

Love all your garden shots, thank goodness the Italian can pick up making sure it still looks lovely- minus his awful plastic ties etc! I also can no longer do most garden work and deal with helpful but sometimes strange ideas of being helpful from my hubby. As for the Congestive Heart Failure your positive attitude will take you a long way. I firmly believe that as my father had this diagnosis twenty years prior to his passing at the age of ninety two!

What a delightful post, Contessa! Happy Easter! The photos with the children are adorable. Imagine being a child and getting invited to an Easter egg hunt just for you! Bliss. Your little princess just gets more and more beautiful. Do they live close by now? I remember them being in San Diego. I love that the Italian is staying busy in your lovely gardens (but I, too, prefer trailing and a bit of a “cottage” look, as opposed to neat, tied up, and orderly.) My own gardens are breathtaking right now. I have one Peony in bloom, which is WAY early for here. I’ve really been enjoying working outdoors, and spring is my absolute favorite season, in which I come alive and get lost in its beauty. Please, keep fighting the good fight with your health issues – you’ve come so far, and your attitude is so amazingly positive. I’ve said this before: You are such an inspiration to all of us. We are blessed to get invited into your life with your blog. The world is a better place because you are in it, Elizabeth. Sending you much love and many well wishes.

Love you… your humor, honesty, style, garden, home decor, this blog… the whole nine yards. And adored the Homeworthy video, and will be watching again. If you could put link at top of blog, more readers will be reminded or made aware.. it is marvelous!! Wish there were better treatments with fewer side effects for heart and lungs… so aware of how hard this must be.. you are totally inspirational. I miss peonies and lilacs soo much, but grateful we now have giant gardenia bushes. And do agree about letting the garden SPRAWL… but I am also married to a man with various pruners and hedge trimmers that are in regular use. And experience the same anxiety from the orange madman, even harder because Mara Lago is not far away. Missing CT more than ever. (LOVE CT Senator Chris Murphy, he would be the best potus.) XOXO

      Oh Janey!!!
Listen my cousin got lung cancer and never SMOKED!!Ever!!They ended up taking one lung Out and that was years ago! It’s a lot to think about I know!!I tend to put it out of my mind most of the time I guess that’s how we cope! But when you’re driving down the street as I was this morning and you have to pull over because it’s raining and you cannot see out of your eyes very well because something is happening like a lack of oxygen to your brain you tend to have to think about what you need to do!!
I was able to call or push a button and got my husband who was in the shower who talked to me until I was able to drive again it’s very hard living like this. I’m just giving you the facts which you don’t need to hear from me. All I can say is ask lots of questions and do everything they suggest. And Hold His Hand when ever you can.

Contessa!! Glory be!!! Your home tour was exquisite. They clearly had an eye to capture all of the beauty you have created in your magical home and gardens.. Of course you and I share a passion for all things antiquated with the patina of a by gone era. I dream of someday popping over and having you share all of the history and stories that go with every piece you treasure in your home.. it fascinates me all of the views you had and says a lot about what a great number of people value in this vintage presentation in your home. And yes, Florence brought to the Bay Area presented by you and Giampy. I love it so very much..
I’m saying prayers for your health continually .. for healing, joy, refreshing and for your home and gardens to continue to lavish you with all you adore!
I love that we both have summer Birthdays .. may we stroll in your gardens and toast to life!

I say, ditch Dr. Google, keep asking your healthcare team LOTS of questions and if they don’t satisfy you, seek alternative help, as well. Sometimes it takes a village to help one heal! Continue living life to the fullest, keep Laughing EVERY DAY and NEVER GIVE UP! My own father was given days to live when he was around your age and he just REFUSED to accept that, so he kept searching for alternative ways to help himself and that he did do! Your garden story is so inspiring—especially how you built it with just yellow and white plants and a focus on fragrance. I love the detail about the ants opening peony buds; it’s one of those charming gardening secrets that makes the whole experience even more magical. I am saddened by your ongoing health challenges. Here is our reality though. At our ages – I am 70 – there are no guarantees for any of us. Even if we do not yet have a diagnosis, something dreadful could happen tomorrow and, boom, that is it. So, what do we do? We live for today. We enjoy the moment that is here right now. We should have been doing that all along, but I sometimes forgot. My age, and my face in the mirror, now help me to remember.

This is a lovely post about your garden. And I also saw the beautiful video of your home. The warm weather is here or, for some, coming soon. There is sunshine. Let’s live happily.

I also just viewed the Homeworthy video of your incredible home- what a delight to finally see many of your collections and the stories behind them. Those planter boxes are going to provide you with many delicious meals cooked by your Italian! Also, it’s best not to Google certain things – my mom was diagnosed with conjestive heart failure at age 70 and she passed over at 88 from pneumonia – so Google isn’t always the best source of info.

I was thinking about you this morning as I walked around Rockridge. So many roses in bloom, which made me think of your garden. It looks great, as always,Byrne way. As for the Italian’s inventive plant supports, we’ve got the same thing going on here. He scrounges around for s9ne ugly, broken piece if metal and fashions it into a plant support.

On to the mystery plant, I’m guessing favabean…or some other broad bean.

As I have said before, you always inspire me so much!
I love what the ITALIAN is doing in the garden and what your garden can tell in stories, I am sure is endless. The memories and love of each plant. A garden is so much like a life well lived. Thank you for sharing so many intimate details about neighbors, plants especially peonies, never knew ants open that beautiful flower. And your grandchildren, the legacy always goes on. May is always a favorite month for me too…. no birthdays but I remember seeing a beautiful maypole with so many flowers and such a celebration for just life being lived??
Now as for as that plant name I don’t have a clue… a pole bean…. lol just a guess.

I’m with you on the garden. A garden that’s let to be a touch overgrown with cascading vines and surprise plants that seed themselves is my love. It creates magical niches all by itself. Yours is like that and I LOVE it.
Keep being your magical self everyday, we need you! We will all do that too and spread the love, connection & creativity.

      KIM!
I could not agree MORE with YOU!”CASCADING VINES and surprise plants”are the way it should be!We have a lot of birds and wildlife here too so they need niches to hide and multiply!
I will certainly TRY to KEEP BEING MYSELF……………XXX

Love all the photos of the children at the Easter Egg Hunt. What a wonderful thing to do for your neighbors. I know you like a wild garden but your Italian is right. Things need to be trimmed and uprighted as it will pay off in the long run. Love your open mouth photos and the lovely Caftan. Yes, it is a scary world out there with an insane, incompetent in the oval office but worse are all the Republicans that support him (all about power and money certainly not about we the people). I have to always remind myself to breathe. Thank you for your blog. Always inspirational. Love you.

YOU donot even see the plant up right with what he has done!It is meant to CASCADE AND FLOW……………so a wild bunny can hide or some other varmint!
He has NO IDEA WHAT HE IS DOING in the GARDEN!Just pretends to know.
ANYWAY, yep it is a SCARY WORLD OUT THERE………guess the BOMBING OF A COUNTRY AS BEEN PUT ON HOLD NOW FOR TWO WEEKS!!!!!What a roller coaster ride………….I agree those Republicans need to grow some BALLS!!ENOUGH is ENOUGH.
