GOOD GRIEF PNEUMONIA at 62!

February 2, 2023 110 Comments

I GUESS I HAD NOTHING BETTER TO DO WHILE I WAITED IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM ON JANUARY 11,2023

SO I TOOK A SELFIE!

I HAD TO WALK MYSELF INTO EMERGENCY AS THE MEDICAL BUILDING HAD IT ROPED OFF TO CARS!

THAT ITALIAN HAD TO GO PARK ON THE STREET AND THAT WAS WAY TOO FAR FOR ME TO WALK!

 I MADE IT WITH A SLIGHT HESITATION…………..

LUCKY ENOUGH TO BE THE NEXT IN LINE THEY TOOK ME IN PRETTY FAST!

I HAD A YOUNG DOCTOR. 33 I ASKED HIS AGE!I REMEMBER THINKING HE IS MY YOUNGEST SONS AGE!HE WAS CUTE AND ALERT AND I THOUGHT WELL AT LEAST HE ISNOT BURNDT OUT YET!HE TOLD ME HE HAD SOME IDEAS AFTER THEY DID THE TRIAGE.CHEST XRAY WAS DONE AND THAT NAILED IT!SEEMED I HAD FLUID IN MY LUNGS ALONG WITH THE SCARING FROM THE MAC OR BETTER NAME FOR MY LUNG ISSUE IS LADY WINDERMERE DISEASE!

YOU KNOW I LOVED THAT NAME!

I WAS DIAGNOSED WITH MAC IN 2021………

I TOLD YOU ABOUT IT BEFORE ON THE BLOG; BUT LET’S REVIEW!

IT IS A DISEASE THAT FLOATS AROUND IN BIRD SHIT AND WATER……..WE ALL HAVE IT!

BUT THOSE TALL WOMAN WHO CAN SOMETIMES BE SLIM SEEM TO BE MORE SUSCEPTIBLE.

I LUCKED OUT!I GUESS ON ONE OF MY THINNER YEARS!

MUST HAVE BEEN WHEN WE HAD CHICKENS,GEESE AND DOVES.

THE SCARING WAS SEEN ON KAISER XRAY IN 2013 AND 2017, BUT NO ONE SAID A THING TO ME!I WOULD HAVE RECALLED SOMETHING LIKE THAT!AS I NEVER EVER SMOKED OR DID ANYTHING THAT WOULD CAUSE LUNG ISSUES.

The Italian's 63rd birthday

I DO RECALL THIS NIGHT AS IT WAS THE ITALIAN’s 63 BIRTHDAY!

 JANUARY 2, 2023

I COULD BARELY GET MYSELF DRESSED AND NO MAKE UP AT ALL…………

 VERY ODD FOR ME AS I KNOW IT CAN BE “OPERATION PHOTO” IF ITS A FESTIVE OCCASION WITH HIM;

OTHERWISE, HE IS SHY AROUND THE CAMERA!

I DIDNOT FEEL FESTIVE AT ALL ,BUT IT WAS THE LAST NIGHT OF “THE HOLIDAY ” DINNERS SO I HAD TO PUSH THROUGH

FOR HIM.

NOT EASY HAVING A BIRTHDAY AFTER ALL THOSE GRAND HOLIDAYS!

HE IS USED TO THAT AS HIS FRIENDS WOULD ALL BE SKIING OR ON HOLIDAY WHEN HE GREW UP SO SELDOM WAS THERE A PARTY!HE SPENT HIS 63 BIRTHDAY TAKING THE ORNAMENTS OFF THE TREE.GAWD….. I WAS THANKFUL AS I HAD NO ENERGY FOR ANYTHING, BUT HAD TO GET THROUGH THAT DINNER.I DONOT EVEN REMEMBER WHAT I DID THAT DAY. MOST LIKELY CLEANED UP A BIT THE DECOR AROUND THE HOUSE AND PROBABLY TOOK A NAP!

PS. ON A PLUS NOTE I GAINED HEIGHT DURING MY STINT IN BED WITH PNEUMONIA!

THOSE VERTEBRAS GOT TO RELAX AND EXTEND!

The Italian's 63rd birthday

I GOT OUT ALL THE GOOD CRYSTAL HIS MOTHER SO KINDLY GIFTED US FOR OUR WEDDING 37 YEARS AGO!

I DIDNOT GO ALL OUT DOING THE ENTIRE PLACE SETTINGS BUT ALLOWED THREE GLASSES FOR WATER, WINE AND CHAMPAGNE AT EACH SEAT.

WE WERE MARRIED IN 1986 AND THE CRYSTAL IS MASSENA BY BACCARAT.

HE LOVES IT AS DO I; BUT I DO KEEP THIS FOR SPECIAL OCCASIONS………….

I THINK AFTER MY January STINT IT WILL BECOME OUR EVERY DAY GLASSWARE!

PEOPLE!!!

YOU CANNOT TAKE IT WITH YOU SO USE IT IF YOU LOVE IT!

hospital accessories

 HOSPITAL ACCESSORIES!

THIS WAS MY ROOM STILL IN EMERGENCY BUT MOVED UP A FLOOR.

I WAS REALLY IMPRESSED!

PRIVATE ROOM BUT STILL CONNECTED TO EMERGENCY!

THAT BRYAN WALKER COAT CAME IN REAL HANDY FOR A BLANKET!

       FIRST NIGHT I THINK!

       NOT MY BEST LOOK!

I ASKED THE ITALIAN FOR HIS SWEATER AS I WAS SO COLD.

I ASKED THREE MEDICAL ASSISTANTS OR WORKER BEES HOW YOU SPELL PNEUMONIA.

DO YOU THINK ONE OF THE THREE COULD SPELL IT?

 NOT ONE!

SIDE NOTE; TODAY I HAD TO CALL A DOCTORS OFFICE FOR MY STEP MOTHER.

THE 28 YEAR OLD WANTED TO KNOW HOW TO SPELL JOYCE!

(I HAD TO ASK HER AGE AFTER OUR CONVERSATION!!!!!)

 SHE WANTED HER BIRTHDATE.

I CAME UP WITH MONTH AND DATE BUT THE YEAR I DIDNOT KNOW!

I ASKED HER TO DO THE MATH TAKE 2023 AND SUBTRACT HER AGE!

THAT TOO WAS A PROBLEM……………..!

DAY TWO OR THREE IN HOSPITAL AS I PURLOINED THAT SWEATER FROM YOU KNOW WHO!

MY GUESS IS THREE BY LOOKING AT MY EYES!

YOU DO KNOW SLEEP IS NOT A GIVEN IN HOSPITALS!

THEY LOVE TO WAKE YOU UP AND TAKE BLOOD AND VITALS ALL NIGHT LONG!

TWO PEOPLE FROM THE LAB WALK INTO MY ROOM AT 12:30 AT NIGHT AND TAKE BLOOD.

I EVEN RECOGNIZED THEM FROM THE LAB!

THEY TURNED ALL THE LIGHTS ON.

I TOSS OUT BOTH ARMS FROM UNDER THE COVERS AND SAY, “DO WHAT YOU NEED TO DO!.JUST DON’T TALK!”

THEY HAD A FULL VOICE LEVEL CONVERSATION ABOUT REAL ESTATE IN OAKDALE,CALIFORNIA!

I UN-COVERED MY EYES WITH MY HEADBAND AND SAID DID YOU HEAR WHAT I SAID?

  NO! WAS THE RESPONSE.

AGAIN I SAY DONOT CHAT. IAM TRYING TO SLEEP!

ANOTHER NIGHT I HAD A WOMAN WITH A BEAUTIFUL LOUD LAUGH DOWN THE HALL.

 I AM ASLEEP………

HER LAUGH GETS CLOSER AND CLOSER.THEN BINGO SHE IS ENTERING OUR ROOM!

BY THIS TIME I AM SHARING A ROOM WITH A WOMAN WITH CANCER.

SHE WANTS MONEY FOR FOOTBALL BETTING.

I KNOW THERE IS A NAME FOR THAT BUT IT HAS LEFT MY HEAD.

I SIT UP FROM A RATHER DEEP SLEEP AND SCREAM,

“WHAT THE FUCK!

THIS IS A HOSPITAL WE NEED TO BE ABLE TO SLEEP!”

THE ENTIRE FLOOR WAS QUIET FOR ABOUT TWO HOURS AFTER THAT VOCAL BIT FROM ME!

I AM CERTAIN I WAS LABELED THE BITCH IN ROOM 109!

AND NO I DIDNOT GET BACK TO SLEEP!

 I WAS PISSED!

OH YES, I TEND TO NOTICE THE DETAILS EVEN ON MY DEATH BED AND THIS TRAY/TABLE WAS DIRTY!

 I WAS GATHERING EVIDENCE!

WHAT ELSE WAS I GOING TO DO?

AT LEAST I KNEW WHERE I WAS.

FROM THAT BUILDING ACROSS THE STREET!

IT USE TO BE A THRIFT SHOP I WOULD FREQUENT!

I DONOT REMEMBER THE ITALIAN COMING AND GOING.

I REALIZE NOW AS I TYPE THIS…………..

I KNOW HE WAS THERE BUT HE DIDNOT SPEND THE NIGHT AS THE ANIMALS WOULD NEED HIM TOO.

THIS WAS NIGHT ONE I WOULD SAY!

A HOSPITAL MEAL I WOULD THINK!

THIS WAS MUSHROOM RISOTTO AND I DO RECALL I THOUGHT IT VERY TASTEY!HERE IAM HEADED HOME BY AMBULANCE!

I HAD A NICE BOY RIDING IN THE BACK WITH ME AS THE GIRL WANTED TO DRIVE WHEN I SAID I WAS PRONE TO BARFING RIDING BACKWARDS ON THE AUTOSTRADA!

HE HAD TO BE AN INTERN AS HE WAS ADORABLE ASKING ME QUESTIONS KEEPING ME BUSY!

I OF COURSE AM THINKING OF THE BLOG AND I MUST GET A PHOTO OF THIS RAIN DRIVING HOME ON HIGHWAY 24!

THIS RAIN WAS SO WELCOME AS WE ARE IN A DROUGHT HERE IN CALIFORNIA!

LOOK HOW FAR BEHIND ALL THE CARS WERE…………

HERE COMES LA CONTESSA!

 MOVE IT.

SHE IS IN TRANSPORT!!!

I LEFT THE HOSPITAL FEELING SO SAD AS MY ROOMMATE TOLD ME HER STORY.

SHE WAS IN FOR A PROCEDURE AS SHE WAS TOLD SHE HAD CANCER IN SEPTEMBER.

SHE WAS ALSO TOLD SHE HAD SIX MONTHS TO LIVE!

HER SURGERY KEPT BEING POSTPONED WHAT WAS TO BE 3:00 BECAME 7PM SURGERY.

THEY WERE THE NICEST COUPLE.SHE WAS 60 YEARS OLD.

THE NEXT DAY SHE TOLD ME THAT THE DOCTOR A WOMAN ASKED HER IF EVERYTHING WAS IN ORDER.AND THAT BOTTOM LINE SHE SHOULD JUST DIE AS NOW SHE HAS BECOME A BURDEN ON THE FAMILY!

I KID YOU NOT!!!!!!!!!!!

I QUOTE HER THE “Eastern European” DOCTOR BASICALLY SAID

,”YOU NEED TO DIE AS YOU ARE A WEIGHT FOR YOUR FAMILY NOW!!

CAN YOU IMAGINE GOING IN FOR A STINT REPAIR FOR CANCER AND BEING TOLD THIS BEFORE YOUR OPERATION?

I LEFT THAT HOSPITAL THINKING WHAT HAS HAPPENED TO OUR BEDSIDE MANNER?!!

MY ROOMIE AS I WILL CALL HER SAID,

“WE ARE CATHOLICS.WHEN IT IS OUR TURN WE GO.

NOT BEFORE!”

I COULD NOT STOP THINKING ABOUT THIS WOMAN AND HER HUSBAND THE WHOLE WAY HOME!

I OF COURSE EXCHANGED NUMBERS WITH HER AND PLAN TO HAVE THEM OVER FOR LUNCH OR DINNER COME SPRING!

AMBULANCE RIDE IS OVER.

HOSPITAL ANNEX SET UP IN OUR BEDROOM!

 BY ADVANCED CARE AT HOME.

THIS IS KAISER’S VERSION OF THE CONCIERGE DOCTORS THAT COME TO YOUR HOME.

IPAD FOR APPOINTMENTS, VITALS AND VIDEO CHATS!

BIG BLACK PHONE WITH DIRECT LINE TO NURSES STATION!

YOU CAN’T SEE THAT HERE.

CUTE MAN WHO SET IT UP SAID, “DIRECT LINE TO THE PRESIDENT!”

THIS IN HOME SERVICE WAS BRILLIANT!

I LOVED ALL MY NURSES AND THEY LOVED ME AND THE ITALIAN!

THREE OF THEM SAID WE WERE THEIR FAVORITE PATIENTS EVER!

THAT ITALIAN LIKES TO BUTT IN AND ADD HIS TWO CENTS OR SHOULD I SAY 500 LIRA!

HE KEPT TURNING DOWN THE OXYGEN TANK LEVELS!

DIDNOT WANT ME DEPENDENT ON IT!

HE WAS ALWAYS A STEP A HEAD OF THE DOCTORS.

IN ITALY THEY KNOW SO MUCH MORE ABOUT THE BODY THAN US AMERICANS!

ONE DAY HE HAD ME ON FACETIME ADJUSTING THE BIG MACHINE IN THE SECOND BATHROOM!

I HAD TO GO DOWN IN A GRAND PLIE TO SEE THE KNOB.

MY BIGGEST FEAR WAS I WOULD NOT GET BACK UP!

I DID IT!

NEXT HE HAS ME REPLACING THE BEAST!

TANK OF OXYGEN ON WHEELS!

SOMETHING ABOUT A FLAME ON A BOTTLE SCARES THE CRAP OUT OF ME!

IV’S FOR ANTIBIOTICS TO BE CONTINUED AT HOME.

I GOT A NEW IV DAILY!

THEY BASICALLY RAN OUT OF VEINS.

THEY WERE ELATED WHEN THEY FOUND A “ROLLING VEIN”

I WAS ON IV’S IN THE HOSPITAL FOR FOUR DAYS.

I THINK A WEEK AT HOME OR MORE.

NURSES CAME TWICE A DAY TO THE HOUSE FOR THESE.

MY MEMORY WAS A BIT FUZZY BUT NOT GONE!

 THATS WHY I TOOK NOTES!

THANK YOU DARYL YOU TAUGHT ME LIFE LESSONS!

I WONDER IF HE (THE ITALIAN) THOUGHT THIS IS IT!

THE END OF LA MAMMA!

( NOW HE CAN GO GET HIS BLONDE AND FIND A WOMAN WHO LOVES THE MOTORCYCLE!)

BRUISING ON ARM IS A MYSTERY!

IV’S WERE ON THE OTHER SIDE AT HOME!

MY BEDROOM WITH PART OF MY MEDICAL TEAM!

HERE YOU CAN SEE THE PRESIDENTIAL PHONE AND ALL THE OTHER NEEDED ACCESSORIES!

ESPECIALLY THE BALL FOR MOM TO TOSS!!

 I GUESS I NEED A NEW HEADBOARD?

ALL THE NEW ONES TAKE UP SO MUCH ROOM.

WHICH I DONOT HAVE ENOUGH SPACE AS IS!

ISN’T THAT CHEST CUTE?

FLORENTINE!

BANKSY ON GUARD WITH THE FIRST OF MANY FLORAL ARRANGEMENTS TO ARRIVE!

NOTE BETTY’S TOY MONKEY COORDINATED PERFECTLY WITH FLOWERS DONE BY MY NEIGHBOR DIANE!

I HAD SPOKEN ABOUT MUMS LAST YEAR AND SHE DOES NOT FORGET A THING I SAY!

I THINK THEY ARE A VERY OVER LOOKED FLOWER!!

YES, YOU ARE IN THE DEPTHS OF MY BEDROOM WITH A BIT OF DISARRAY!

PASTA MADE FOR ME BY THE ITALIAN WITH SOME PANNA THAT WAS SENT TO ME FROM THE NETHERLANDS!I HAVE NO IDEA WHO SENT ME ABOUT 9 BOXES OF ITALIAN PANNA! THERE WAS NO NOTE AND THE ADDRESS SEEMED TO BE A POSTAL SHOP.ANYONE OUT THERE KNOW?I CANNOT THANK YOU ENOUGH!!!!I LOVE THIS STUFF AND ITS GLUTEN FREE BELIEVE IT OR NOT!SAYS SO ON THE BOX!THIS IS A WHIPPING CREAM THAT DOES NOT HAVE TO BE REFRIGERATED!IT HAS A SHELF LIFE BUT NOT THAT LONG!A FEW MONTHS!THE ITALIAN MADE IT WITH PEAS AND BACON I BELIEVE.HE LEFT THE SAUCE A BIT DRY WHICH WAS WONDERFUL!!I HAD FORGOTTEN THAT TECHNIQUE FROM OUR ITALIAN DAYS!I SCARFED IT DOWN AS I WAS HUNGRY!!

THE ITALIAN COOKED AND SHOPPED AND WENT TO WORK AND TOOK CARE OF ME THE ENTIRE TIME!

HE GETS UP AT 4 AM……………TO START HIS DAY!

 AS DID MY FRIENDS!

YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE AND I THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY REPAIRED HEART!

 A FUNNY STORY!

WHEN THEY BROUGHT IN AN XRAY MACHINE ON WHEELS TO MY BEDROOM.

YEP YOU HEARD THAT RIGHT.

IT BARELY FIT THROUGH MY HALLWAY AND DOORWAY!

BOTH THE ITALIAN AND THE TECHNICIAN SAID, “WHAT’S THAT ?” AT THE SAME TIME!

SCARED ME TO DEATH!

IT WAS THE LITTLE PLASTIC RING THAT HOLDS MY MITRAL VALVE TOGETHER WHICH THEY HAD INSERTED IN 2010 WHERE THEY TURNED MY HEART OFF FOR A FEW MINUTES DURING THE SURGERY!

I THINK THE ITALIAN GOT IT FIRST!

I ALWAYS TOLD HIM IN OUR 20’S HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN A PEDIATRICIAN.

I LOOK VERY SICK HERE TO MYSELF.

IT WAS 7:30 AM AND MY SON NICHOLAS WAS IN FRONT OF HER.

 BETTY!

THE ITALIAN HAD HIRED A CAREGIVER TO COME IN AND NICHOLAS WAS INTRODUCING US.

A CAREGIVER WAS NEEDED AS THE NURSES WERE AFRAID OF MY DOG BETTY!

GOOD THING THEY DIDN’T SEE THE PIGGY!

THE CAREGIVER LOVED THE DOG AND THE PIG!

HIS NAME WAS AUGUST AND IF YOU EVER NEED HELP AND LIVE IN THE Bay Area I WOULD RECOMMEND HIGHLY!

I WAS THRILLED TO FIND OUT HE WAS A MECHANICAL ENGINEER IN HIS PAST LIFE SO HE COULD DEAL WITH THE OXYGEN TANKS AS THEY TERRIFIED ME!

HIS ENGLISH IS EXCELLENT!

THE CONSTANT NURSE!

 THEODORE.

THEODORABLE AS A FRIEND NAMED HIM YEARS AGO ………..SARAH YOU OUT THERE?

 CARDS THAT HAVE COME IN……………….

THANKS TO KIM AT NORTHERN CAL STYLE WHO MENTION I WAS SICK ON HER INSTAGRAM!

THESE REALLY PUT A SMILE ON MY FACE!

I WOULD COUNT THE CARDS AND POSTCARDS EACH DAY AND GIVE KIM A TOTAL!

8 TODAY OR 3 TODAY!

THEY ARE STILL COMING IN AS OF YESTERDAY!

PART OF THE A MEDICAL TEAM……….getting ready for his shift!

  JANUARY 23, 2023

12 DAYS INTO THE CARE FOR PNEUMONIA.

  ALL I DID WAS SLEEP.

I HAD NO DESIRE TO READ OR EVEN LOOK AT MY PHONE IT WAS HARD TO FOCUS.

IF I WASNOT SLEEPING I WAS STARING OUTSIDE.

OCCASIONALLY I WOULD TAKE A CALL, BUT ONLY TALK FOR A COUPLE MINUTES AS I DIDNOT HAVE THE BREATH OR ENERGY.

I WOULD SAY I HAVE TO HANG UP NOW.THANKS!

THE DAYS WENT BY SO FAST.

I DID NOT HAVE THE WILL TO BRUSH MY HAIR OR STRENGTH TO BRUSH MY TEETH!

TELEVISION HAD NO INTEREST TO ME.

I THOUGHT THIS WAS STUNNING!THANK YOU!

FEET WARMERS………

SOMETIMES THE OLDEST FRIENDS KNOW JUST WHAT TO DO!

THIS WAS THE CREEK CLOSE TO MY HOUSE WHERE I GREW UP!

I WOULD PLAY HERE WITH CELESTE OR RUTHY OR GINNA.

WE WOULD CAPTURE TADPOLES IN JARS AND LITTLE GREEN FROGS!

WE ALWAYS LET THEM GO BUT JUST TO STUDY THEM!

WHEN CELESTE SENT ME THIS PHOTO AND THE OTHER SIDE OF THE ROAD IT BROUGHT BACK SO MANY GOOD MEMORIES!CELESTE, LIVES NOT FAR FROM THE CREEK AND TAKES WALKS TO IT!I HAD TOLD HER THE OTHER DAY TO GO FOR A WALK TO THE CREEK YOU KNOW WHICH ONE!SHE INFORMED ME SHE WALKED THERE FREQUENTLY!THAT COMMENT MADE ME SO HAPPY AND IN A COUPLE DAYS I HAD THIS! WE WOULD SPEND HOURS HERE……….AND ACROSS THE STREET DOWN A COUNTRY DIRT ROAD WAS AN OLD, OLD VICTORIAN HOUSE!WITH NO TRESPASSING SIGNS ALL OVER!IT SAT IN A FIELD OF DRY GRASS………………

WHAT HAPPENED TO THAT HOUSE  ANYONE KNOW?

MEGA MANSIONS I BET THEY PUT THREE ON THAT ONE LOT!

 ON SHIFT………THE MEDICAL A TEAM!

DURING THIS TIME IN BED I HAD THREE FOCAL SEIZURES WITHIN 24 HOURS DUE TO THE EPILEPSY!I HAVE NEVER HAD MORE THAN ONE A DAY……….TWO WERE HORRIFIC AND ONE WAS MILD.MILD ISNOT THE RIGHT WORD BUT LETS SAY I WAS NOT HOLDING ON FOR DEAR LIFE!I ACTUALLY HAD ONE WHILE TALKING TO A NURSE VIA THE PROGRAM AT ACAH.

ON VIDEO CHAT. I TOLD HER WHAT WAS HAPPENING THEN I HAD TO HANG UP AND LIE BACK.IT LASTED FOR ABOUT 10 MINUTES WHICH IS LONG!NORMALLY THEY ARE 3 TO 5 MINUTES.A FOCAL SEIZURE IS WHERE I LOSE MY VISION, FEEL FAINT AND AM LEFT WITH A TERRIBLE HEADACHE FOR UP TO TWO DAYS.

THE NEUROLOGIST INFORMED ME THAT SEIZURES GO UP DURING THESE KIND OF INFECTIONS.

OH LUCKY ME!!!!

THE SYMPTOMS FOR ME WERE:

A COUGH WHICH I ALWAYS HAVE DUE TO MAC.

EXTREME FATIQUE

LOW GRADE FEVER NOT HIGH!

RASH ON BACK THAT ITCHED LOOKED LIKE SMALL PIMPLES.

FEVER BLISTER ON UPPER LIP

NIGHT SWEATS. I WOULD HAVE TO CHANGE ABOUT 3 AM.

I LEARNED ABOUT OXYGEN SATURATION WHICH WE DONOT WANT BELOW 92.

HOSPITALIZATION FROM JANUARY 11 THROUGH 14TH.

AT HOME CARE BY KAISER JANUARY 14TH THROUGH 27TH.

BOTTM LINE I HAD TO FIGHT FOR AN EXTRA DAY AS I HAD BEEN OFF THE OXYGEN FOR THREE DAYS BUT DIDNOT FEEL CERTAIN I WAS OKAY!I GOT  AN EXTRA DAY……….THANKS TO A LOVELY P.A.

I SIGNED OFF ON JANUARY 28TH,2023.

A WELLNESS COACH WILL CALL ONCE A WEEK FOR FOUR WEEKS TO CHECK IN ON ME.THROUGH ACAH.

IF I FEEL UNWELL AGAIN I HAVE TO START OVER AT THE EMERGENCY ENTRANCE!

TODAY IS FEBRUARY 2, 2023 A MONTH SINCE MY ITALIAN’S BIRTHDAY.I AM STILL NOT BACK TO MY NORMAL.OXYGEN LEVELS FALLING INTO 80’S AND LOW 90’S I PLAN TO CHART IT FOR THE NEXT WEEK!TO SEE IF I CAN SEE A PATTERN!

I AM TRYING TO MOVE MORE AROUND THE HOUSE.

MY FOLLOW UP APPOINTMENT WITH MY MEDICAL DOCTOR IS FEBRUARY 15TH BY PHONE!

19 DAYS AFTER I WAS SPRUNG!WHAT DO WE THINK OF THAT TIMETABLE?

THERE IS NO FOLLOW UP WITH MY LUNG DOCTOR, BUT I ADORE HIM SO MUCH AS HE ANSWERS MY EMAILS THE SAME DAY I WRITE THEM AND HE WAS THE ONE TO SAY “DON’T BE A HERO GET YOURSELF TO EMERGENCY IF YOU ARENOT BETTER!AND GAVE ME A LIST OF THINGS TO HAVE DONE!WHICH I PASSED ON TO EMERGENCY ROOM DOC KIDDO!

I KNOW THERE WAS SOMETHING ELSE I WANTED TO MENTION BUT IT HAS LEFT ME AT THE MOMENT!

DURING ALL OF THIS I HAVE HAD A VERY SICK PIG.HE HAS STOPPED EATING!

MY ITALIAN FOUND A MOBILE VET WHO CAME TO THE HOUSE LAST SATURDAY!

STAY TUNED HERE FOR THAT UPDATE SO FAR NO IMPROVEMENT!BUT I LOVED THAT KID TOO!

IS THERE A BETTER PLACE TO HAVE A PHYSICAL THEN MAMMA’S CAFTAN CLOSET ON A PERSIAN WEDDING GIFT CARPET FROM ROME?

WITH A YOUNG VET FROM PETALUMA WHO CAME FROM IOWA!

BANKSY TOLERATED IT BUT WOULD HAVE PREFERRED TO BE NAPPING!

WHAT YOU CANNOT SEE IS AN ULTRA SOUND BEING DONE AND THE GOOD NEWS IS NOTHING BAD WAS FOUND!

NO TUMORS. NO BLOCKAGE.

AS I WENT TO GRAB THE PHONE TO TAKE THIS PHOTO OF THE ITALIAN AND THE VET THEODORE WAS TRYING TO BARF!

GOOD GOD WHO IS NEXT?

BETTY GOT AN EAR INFECTION DURING THIS TIME AS WELL!

STAY AWAY FROM US AS WE ARE NOT HEALTHY BEINGS YET!

WE ARE WORKING HARD ON IT AND HOPE TO BE DANCING AROUND THE GARDEN SOON!

THANK YOU EVERYONE!

YOUR COMMENTS YOUR CALLS YOUR TEXT MESSAGES HAVE GOTTEN BE THROUGH THIS INCREDIBLY BAD TIME.

XXX

PS. I WAS NEVER OFFERED OR TOLD TO GET A PNEUMONIA VACCINE!

I RECENTLY HAD THE FLU AND THE SHINGLES AND ALL THE BOOSTERS, BUT NOT ONE PERSON NOR ONE EMAIL TELLING ME TO GET VACCINATED FOR PNEUMONIA!ONCE AGAIN I FELL THROUGH THE CRACKS OF KAISER WHO DID A TERRIFIC JOB WHEN THEY HAD ME FOR MY HEART SURGERY; BUT HAVE FAILED ME MANY TIMES NOW IN THE PAST DECADE.

YES, I FEEL SORRY FOR MY 62 YEAR OLD SELF NO ONE SHOULD HAVE TO GO THROUGH WHAT I HAVE BEEN THROUGH IN HER 62 YEARS OF LIVING!HEART SURGERY AT 50.SEVEN YEARS OF DOCTORS TELLING ME THEY HAVE NO IDEA WHAT’S WRONG WITH ME OR WHY I LOSE MY VISION!IF MY MD TOLD ME ONE MORE TIME” I”M SORRY” I WAS GOING TO PUNCH HER. I CHANGED DOCTORS ONLY TO CHANGE AGAIN!ONLY TO FIND OUT I SUFFER FROM FOCAL SEIZURES A FORM OF EPILEPSY.

LUNG ISSUES.NO WONDER I WAS ALWAYS OUT OF BREATH!I HATE WALKING BECAUSE OF IT!

WHAT I FORGOT TO MENTION THE WEEK OF CHRISTMAS I GOT A FLOATER THE BAD KIND!

Felt so worried about you when I saw you were in the hospital. You have so many people that love you especially The Italian. I lost my love on December 17th and have been very sensitive to anybody who is suffering. I think that doctor who looked after your roomie was horrible. I’ve also added her to my prayers. I am praying for your continued healing as well Elizabeth!

Wow I don’t where to start. This is a lot you just went through. I wish I could have been your neighbor at this time. First, I agree why do they let you sleep at the hospital. Seems like the can whisper or dim lights. Then, your roommate. I’m in shock. Who would say that to someone who is sick. I have a lot of questions. I didn’t know you had to take ambulance home. Your body was be so tired. That pasta looked amazing. And Betty’s ear infection, oh boy. I love you, you are a trooper.

Madonna Mia, Carissima! Da dove iniziare?!
Let’s just pray and hope that the worst is OVER!!
I could relate VERY WELL to your hospital experience (through my husband, as you know – been over 1 yr. now and still struggling). You always just hope that you get well experienced staff with COMPASSION. I find that basic human trait to be lacking in A LOT of hospital personnel these days….it is SAD….so, when a genuinely caring person does happen to appear to help, we are genuinely awestruck.
Your resident Medical A Team are Angels and they will continue to HELP BIG TIME ! I am THRILLED that you have them there at home with YOU! God Bless them, TOO!!
I shall send you a proper email very soon!
In the meantime, please PLEASE GET BETTER AND BETTER VERY SOOOON!!
Sending GOOD HEALING VIBRATIONS YOUR WAY, CARISSIMA CONTESSA!!

oh my god but now it’s enough… of illness and telling about it. Think of beautiful experiences that were before and believe that they will come again. Your husband is a jewel. Be thankful for that. I really like your humor despite the current situation, it not only cheers up the readers but also helps you to get well soon. I sincerely wish you that, dear Contessa. …and I’m glad that you like my photos. ..thanks.

Elizabeth, thank you for the update – I hope it wasn’t too exhausting for you to do it. I am so sorry that you have had to go through this medical ordeal… but I am overjoyed that you are home with your peeps and on road to recovery. Kudos to you for speaking up (loudly & profanely – haha) and getting a couple of hours of sleep while in the hospital. I hope that you continue to get well and you are outside enjoying Spring soon. Love and a big virtual hug from Massachusetts.

I am so glad you are starting to feel better. I still have not fully recovered from my bought of pneumonia and the congestive heart failire. All I want to do is sleep and have to take at least one nap a day. I see my lung specialist tomorrow so I’m hoping for something not sure what anything that will make an improvement on my breathing. My legs keep swelling as well. We’ll see!

I hope you (and Banksy) are continuing down the road of recovery. Thank you for sharing this personal story. You are an amazingly resilient woman!

Golly you have been through an ordeal. I just can’t believe it. Pneumonia is no joke and it’s insane they never gave you the shot with your compromised lung issue. I am glad you got to go home to convalesce. You home team aka pets inc seem to be good for morale and extra love. So happy you are getting cards still. People are so kind. I hope you are better and will soon be in the sun and in the garden with your loves. This weather is not helping. We need to get some California sun.
Sending big hugs and love to you. Wish we lived closer to each other. xoxo

I hope the sun is shining today for you! I can’t imagine how difficult the past month has been! I plan to get the pneumonia vaccine because of you, you are always doing good things for others through your stories. I hope Banksy is also doing better. I love seeing your animal medic team snoozing side by side. Only in your home!
Stay warm and dry, spring is on the way. Sending hugs and best wishes as you regain your strength.

LA CONTESSA, I’m so sorry that you have gone through all of this. What a nightmare. Although it sounds like you have gotten excellent home care attendants. You know, you still look beautiful when you’re sick. I can’t believe that and it isn’t fair 😛 Your positive attitude is certainly playing a role in your healing. I don’t blame you for shouting at the loud nurse while trying to get sleep in the hospital (in the middle of the night!).
It doesn’t rain, it pours…now the pets! I feel so bad for BANKSY. Do you think he is having sympathy pains for you? They are so intelligent. I wouldn’t be surprised if he’s been worried about you.

Oh, dear Contessa, what a tale of misery – hospitals are not fun places to stay and rest is usually the last thing you can get there. But pneumonia? That’s awful news and I hope you make a full recovery soon, which I don’t doubt owing to the amazing care by Nurse Italian and his team of four-legged nurse’s aides. I suspected something was up as you said you were feeling poorly about the time of the Italian’s birthday but I never imagined you were hospitalised! Pneumonia once seemed like something only “old people” got when but it’s amazing how many people I know who’ve had it and had it when young. You have to wonder why it’s now “going around”.

Baci bella and take good care of yourself xx

What a truly awful start to 2023, I am so sorry that you have been so ill with pneumonia and that you were not advised to have the pneumonia vaccine – shocking! Staying in hospital is grim and sleep in a hospital setting is, as you mentioned frequently elusive. I have no doubt that your recovery has been boosted by being ably looked after at home by your Italian and your four legged companions. Wishing you plenty of rest and a full and speedy recovery. Dearest Contessa,

I realize that this was a serious post, but I found your account of your hospital odyssey absolutely hilarious! Having to hobble through a blocked-off parking lot, having to remind midnight caregivers to SHUT UP, bolting upright in bed and screaming at people that you are trying to sleep; I could imagine your doing this, and I was encouraging you along as I read it. Only you would think to document your ambulance journey. You have been and remain in my prayers, especially during this incredibly wicked time – thank God for the Italian and your home medical staff of critters. I suspect that Banksy knows you are ill, and his worry caused his own issues. Animals are so sensitive. I loved that Betty came up on the bed and brought along her tennis ball, in case you felt like playing! And Theodore was right there, keeping you warm and comforted. May things be back to normal for you soon. My heart aches for your roommate – no one should have to put up with such insensitivity. The poor thing has enough on her mind without some nincompoop, nitwit doctor suggesting that she hurry things along. I’m sure she found you and the Italian to be a great comfort. This is a gift that you share with us all. Lastly, I fell in love with your gorgeous crystal, and that bedside chest is so feminine and tasteful. Please, please keep getting better – we are all cheering for you, from near and far. Big hugs coming your way.

Ahhhhh, welcome to the “club”! During my 50s/60s had been fairly “lucky” healthwise, just a few things like a small breast cancer surgically removed with a month of daily radiation (all good now), and a couple of little melanomas/skin cancers. No biggie. BUT, Oct/Nov 2021, at age 74, I luxuriated in the hospital for 34 days with blood clots in the lungs (Al Roker, the national TV Today Show weatherman just had the same thing), followed by 6 weeks of in-home round-the-clock caregivers, nurses and physical therapists. The pictures you bravely shared with us are very similar to the ones I took during my own ordeal, and your tales of your time in-hospital are so familiar — those daily 4am blood draws were maddening, at best. Fast forward: fully recuperated, all good until Jan 6 this year, and bam!, back in the ER again with the diagnosis: pneumonia! Mine was milder than yours, and there were no prolonged hospital stays this time around, but it was a reminder of just how fragile life is in our “golden years.” OR “rusty years” as I prefer to call them. And, just as I did in May/June 2022, I am off again, May/June this year, to Italy and France! Keep on keepin’ on, no matter what. Cheers!

    VIA EMAIL:

    Hello Elizabeth,

I am so sorry about all your recent troubles. All your friends and readers, including myself, have told you to stay well, so please start listening to us–we know what’s best for you!
I know I have been absent for a long time. I had some trouble with my eyes changing, and even though I got several new prescriptions, I simply could not read much at screen-distance. I am now slowly trying to start participating again, but certainly did not want
to begin with a bad health report from you!
So you are a creek lover also! Did you walk alongside the creek, or in it? My brother and I, and later my sister, knew every creek for miles around. It’s too bad you don’t have a photo of the old house in the field. Your reminiscences reminded me of a house I came across driving through Indiana, a photo of which I will attach. Perhaps I will tell the story of this house in my blog.
Please make a full recovery soon. And by the way, Happy Chinese (Rabbit) New Year!

    Sincerely,

    Jim

I am so sorry that you have had such a traumatic experience. Pneumonia is a terrible infection that can sideline you for months…yes I know this personally.
You must be feeling a wee bit better as you have been able to send us all an update via the blog. Your home care sounds like quite an adventure. Here in BC they don’t do anything much once you are out of the hospital, we are left in limbo.
Your devoted “bedmates” must know that you need TLC and are doing their best to offer comfort….animals have that sense. Hope your Banksy will rally soon.
I urge you to keep resting…as much as you can. Sit up in bed regularly to help your lungs expand. I wish I lived closer so I could visit and help.
You have an amazing ability to write, I enjoy your blogposts so much.

So thrilled you are on the road for recovery, and really think being home was the best medicine. You had the clan-the Italian and the fur balls all taking care of you and giving comfort where needed. Now that is great medicine to me. As for Kaiser I only have heard horror stories, and it’s a shame too. With the shortages of Dr.’s today, they all have to be tops. Having had two family members in the medical field I am skeptical. I laughed so hard when you screamed about not getting sleep. No hospitals do not allow that. I once spent 21 days in a hospital, and the only time I got rest was between shifts. I looked like a junkie on my arms etc. by the time I exited.
Yes, on the pneumonia shot for sure (Dr.’s normally recommend this) and if you have had chicken pox then the SHINGLES shot. Horrible shot, but so much better than shingles. A friend of mine got it in his brain and eye…put those two on your list of must have when you are well.
Your ability to put together a post being so ill amazes me. We can all wait to hear from our beloved Contessa…getting well is number one…the rest can wait. But so appreciative that you did this, as I have been so concerned. Hugs and good times ahead for the one and only.

Cara Contessa, i miei migliori auguri di pronta guarigione! E grazie per essere sempre acuta, interessante, ironica e divertente perfino durante una polmonite! A presto, un caro saluto da un’Italiana che ti segue dall’Inghilterra. Ciao!

    Darling Elizabeth,
What an eventful start to your new year. But you’re on the up and up and that’s what is important now. Hopefully you will leave all this distress in the past and the rest of 2023 will only get better for you and the whole family.
    All my love
    Daron

Oh dear Elizabeth, you have been through the wringer this year. I’m sorry you went through all the misery of a hospital stay and your long illness. I had pneumonia when I was in high school and remember how awful I felt for a very long time. Hope you are recovering and able to enjoy all the little things in life that make you smile.

    Hi there CONTESSA
What an exhausting month! Unbelievable! So glad you got medical care and are recovering albeit slowly. Was interesting for me to read about the US health care system.
So glad you shouted out – wtf! People don’t realize voices/sound travels and because they’re up they think everyone is up/should be up. I would have shouted it out also!
Cold at hospital – I asked when I was there in December why is it so cold – it’s to keep the germs from growing – warm temps help them grow. I asked for a warm blanket. They have a special oven for blankets.
Here in BC there was lots of advertising re the pneumococcal vaccine for seniors. Also announcements re flu vaccine. Shingles etc.
Best place to be now is at home surrounded by your pets and the Italian who has been so caring. Quite a scare for him having you in the hospital.
Re nurses scared of Betty – this reminded me of when my dad was in the hospital.
I came to visit one day and the head nurse said to me the nursing staff will not go in your dad’s room as they’re scared. Scared I said. Yes, they are scared because he has a knife.
I went to his room and there was dad sitting on the bed and he was nonchalantly peeling his apple with his pen knife.
I explained to him that I would have to take the knife home as the nursing staff were scared of him/knife. He was fine with it going home with me.
Be sure you get copies of all your hospital records. Here we go to patient records and fill out paperwork and they send it to us free of charge.
Take care. Glad you had the energy to write the blog and took us inside the past month of your life!

How you can go through all of that and still take notes for your audience astounds me. One’s good health is never more missed than when it’s absent. Not being able to breathe or have energy can cue the depression for sure. You are on the other side of it. Grateful that it was something that could be treated.

You had me laughing picturing you screaming at the noisy staff in the middle of the night. Good for you. They did NOT know who they were dealing with. May I have your spirit when it’s my turn to be ill. I take comfort in knowing that we all age and that our bodies will grow tired. However, I will still be a person with opinions and a voice. I will channel my inner Contessa.

Continue to rest. One day you’ll realize that your energy is back. And oh how we will celebrate!!!

    XOXO

“The English Woman’s Bedroom” a favorite old book. You and your bedroom could carry a chapter, too! It is not just the house, the room, the person. It is the life created there.
What a ride. Guess I might need a pneumonia shot (thank you autocorrect). Glad you are improving. Appears you are really taking it seriously and getting the best of care.
So helpful when you share details that help others. When I’m certain you would rather take a pass from social media until you are well.
The flowers, near Banksy are truly beautiful. Living with beauty while you two recuperate. Banksy please get better. Betty and Theodorable are the best medicine! Watch dogs too, Lol
Love the cards you shared. How great is the image of tiny RX bottle and aspirins!
Hahaha, yes the F word is the go to when trying to sleep in hospital.
Sending prayers for your continued recovery(and dear Banksey). A special prayer for the roommate traveling a very hard path.
PS… your mother was correct. The Italian is a good one!
    Take care. DB

“keep an eye on it” – at least you still have a sense of humor.
Next time I go out I’ll take pictures of where the house in the dry grass used to be. You will not believe it at all! I will take more pictures of the old neighborhood too.
I am so hoping that you kick this soon! I can’t believe that they didn’t recommend the pneumonia shot. They insisted my mom get it (I told you she also had MAC).
When you get better you and the Italian must come over here for an early supper and maybe a walk around the neighborhood. I’m looking forward to it!

Contessa! What an ordeal. I know Kaiser is often wanting but it does sound like they are good in a crisis and took good care of you both in hospital and at home. Capably supported by your 4-legged medical team and the Italian, of course. So sorry about poor Banksy intestinal troubles, and Betty’s ear. When it rains it pours. Now that we’re into February and spring is in sight I hope you feel better everyday. Very soon you’ll be dancing in the garden and entertaining your Kaiser roomie and her husband. Poor woman, I hope she finds a new and more compassionate physician. Thanks for keeping your loyal subjects up to date and entertained by what has been a less-than-delightful kick off to 2023. xo
