GROCERIES IN BASKETS!

June 24, 2024 66 Comments

How many of you are mindful of the paper and plastic bags that are used for your groceries?

Do you know how easy it is to have BASKET BAGS in your trunk for the DUTY?

I have been doing this for YEARS!

The cashiers even know not to ask me “PLASTIC or PAPER” as they see the baskets in the cart.

I am sometimes called THE BASKET LADY!

I find them easier to handle and carry into the house from the garage as well.

When we lived outside of FLORENCE in ITALY in the early 1990’s EVERYONE saved their plastic yellow ESSELUNGA plastic bags. They would be folded and kept inside one another for the following trip to the market. At that time in 1991 they cost 10 cents each. They were sturdy and bigger than ours here in CALIFORNIA.They lasted for YEARS!

Italy’s been recycling for YEARS……………we need to keep up!

We certainly use more plastic stuff and from what I notice we WASTE A LOT MORE TOO.

I thought I might have started a TREND back in the day………..but I have yet to SEE ONE PERSON EVER USE A BASKET for GROCERIES!I have small tote cloth bags I carry inside the basket for PRODUCE or MEATS.

Those work well too.

Just thought I would show you because it makes grocery shopping MORE FUN IF YOU ASK ME!

I am there every other day as I make THE ITALIAN’s lunch and he has to have FRESH BREAD.

Once he RETIRES NO MORE PACKED LUNCHES!

MY LIFE WILL CHANGE!!

SHALL WE START THE COUNT DOWN?

184 more days……………..!!!

I pulled out an old DAUGHTERS OF INDIA dress to cover the new exercise leggings.

AS I stood in line to pay………..at LULULEMON (they seem to be the only store with lines to pay in the shopping center these days)I noticed sandals hanging on the wall. They looked small to me but once I paid I walked back through the line to see UP CLOSE!

OH MY GOSH………….They are sandals of my DREAMS!

I am an 8.5 shoe but the 7 fits me well in this sandal.

I can recall years ago at NEIMAN MARCUS the shoe man told me to go down at least a size if not two on sandals! That way you do not slip out of the sandal when walking!I cannot wear the sandals with the toe bump and cross bar like in a BIRKENSTOCK they give me CRAMPS!

I tried the LIGHT BLUE ONES ON!

I walked around the store!

I bought BEIGE and BLACK too as the sizes were dwindling and I shop like that!

If I like something I buy MULTIPLES.I wear one pair for a few days to make CERTAIN IT FITS and feels comfortable then I break out the others…………by ripping off their tags!

Or I return if it’s a NO GO!

The last time I bought sandals I was in ROME!

THAT WAS YEARS AGO!

MORE OF MY TOES!!

SORRY ABOUT THAT but I THOUGHT YOU WOULD LIKE TO SEE THE SANDALS!

Speaking of TOES I had a lot of comments regarding the TOE FUNGUS from the last Blog Post!

So, Interesting some of the helpful hints you all have tried are VICKS VAPOR RUB and LISTERINE NATURAL MOUTHWASH!

I APPRECIATE ALL YOUR FEEDBACK!

I think it’s a GREAT way to LEARN and SHARE what works for others and may work for ME and YOU too!

CHECK BACK TO SCAN THE COMMENTS AS IT MAY BENEFIT YOU!

SPEAKING of “WHAT WORKS”………….

As you know I was shot-up with BOTOX in my head and skull and my back about a month ago.

NOT FOR BEAUTY, but for what they now BELIEVE is MIGRAINES!

I might add in the beginning of all this DISCOVERY NINE YEARS AGO.

THEY HAD THE SAME THOUGHTS.

That my issue was MIGRAINES.

WE HAVE COME FULL CIRCLE and just maybe the BOTOX IS WORKING!

IT’s been over two weeks now NO EYE EPISODES!

THAT IS BIG NEWS……….however I am having headaches DAILY but I can deal with them.

JUST MAYBE I CAN HAVE MY LIFE BACK.

NO JUMPING UP AND DOWN FOR JOY YET!

I DONOT WANT TO JINX IT!

WHY WAS I THE LAST TO KNOW ABOUT BOTOX?THEN AGAIN I NEVER THOUGHT I HAD MIGRAINES.

I STILL DON’T THINK THATS WHAT IT IS, BUT IF THIS WORKS WONDERFUL………!

I WILL BE SILENT AND KEEP ON GIVING YOU CAFTANS,MY GARDEN and MY TIPS OF SUPER FINDS AND FINDING PEOPLE OF INTEREST!!

COMING SOON WILL BE A WOMAN WHO MAKES HER OWN SKINCARE!

FOR HER OWN USE!

I made a WONDERFUL RICE SALAD RECENTLY.

Is that something you would want the recipe for?

I put CASHEWS and TUNA in it with loads of vegetables.Lots of Balsamic vinegar and olive oil.

It makes a GOOD DINNER all on it’s OWN!

The PLASTIC BAGS I spoke of above are non-existent in ITALY NOW and they sell these for groceries. You can see from the lines how my sister-in-law folds it up to put into another bag………I would guess she has about SIX or EIGHT of these at ALL TIMES!

If any of YOU WORLDLY READERS WANT TO CHIME IN PLEASE DO in the comments BELOW!

HOW DO YOU CART YOUR GROCERIES HOME?

DO YOU FEEL GOOD ABOUT IT…………

Of course we are TWO PEOPLE and a CAT THEODORE that I shop for on a regular basis, so TWO BASKETS seems to do the trick and mine stack inside each other. If you are a BIG FAMILY carting multiple baskets inside may not BEHOOVE YOU!

XXX

YOUR CONTESSA

I have an IRONING PILE to TACKLE this week!I really do ENJOY IT once I get it all SET-UP!

Do you think the YOUNGER people even know what an IRON DOES?

I can see that TOOL disappearing in OUR LIFETIME!

HAPPY SUMMER EVERYONE or WINTER if you live FAR FAR AWAY!!!

Hi. Glad to see your feeling better.
Lululemon is from My home town Vancouver. I also buy items I like in doubles. I use to always buy Stuart Weitzman shoes in doubles. In the 90’s the pump were around $250-$300 a pair. Now they are $1000 a pair.
Groceries. We are just 2 people and at home I spend a fortune on groceries. I arrived at the cottage a week ago, bought $600. In groceries then around $200. Having to buy everything, all the condiments doesn’t help. I always take my own bags in unless I leave them in the car!!!!!
Baskets, I use those when I go to the market. They don’t work for large shops. I love the “BAGU” brand of nylon bags. I have had mine for years. Light and I have a pouch they fold into. Just through the. In the washer. The also have other cool things.

    Hello dear cousin!

I use the small cloth bags for groceries which are washed on a very regular basis. And who was it who taught me to use them? None other than Joyce, about 35 years ago! Once they wear out, I may need to go to baskets — much better looking!

    Love to you,
    Cousin Barb

    Hi Elizabeth,
So glad the Botox has helped a little. I remember suggesting to you years ago that what you were getting might have been ocular migraines. I get them too but not nearly as often as you did. I hate the weirdly isolating effect of that loss of vision, even if it is only for an hour. The headache I can deal with. I hope this is finally the solution for you.

The baskets you use for groceries are so lovely! Of course they are. I use those not very attractive reusable plastic bags they sell at the store. I don’t grocery shop that often, when I do it’s a lot! I would need 5 or 6 big baskets! But I do take my basket to the farmer’s market with me, and fill it with goodies all the way to the top, and beyond!
I slip and slide out of sandals too, unless there is a strap around my heel. I never thought of going down in size, I’ll try it sometime. Not that I need another pair of sandals, nope, definitely I do not.
Enjoy these nice long summer days.
    Xo Heidi

Your new sandals look so comfy! Good for you for picking up two. I use ‘reusable’ (and washable) grocery bags always. Our grocery stores do not offer plastic, have not for over a decade. It’s paper or buy their reusable bags. I like the idea of baskets! Love that you’ve been using that method since Italy days.
I’m so happy to hear the botox treatment is working for relieving your episodes, LA CONTESSA! That is great news.

Hello Contessa, When in Taiwan I use the heavier plastic bags the stores are requires to sell, but I double them and then can use them over and over for about a year. When they finally rip, we can recycle them. The ones I use now are bright yellow, kind of like the ones you show (but not as strong), but as I have been told they do not look very chic, I am keeping my eye out for some better ones. Since I walk about a mile home from the store, I cannot carry very much in one trip.

    Hi there
Shopping bags – here in stores they have banned giving out the thin ones – but sell cloth or the heavier store branded plastic ones. Myself, I rarely grocery shop as my husband is the grocery shopper. People were amused recently when I was at a store and didn’t know how the cart release worked! I have a cloth bag or the heavier plastic (this type I used for my can collecting) if I am “shopping” – at times if it is only a few items I stuff them into my purse/pockets or just carry out for all to see. Baskets would be too heavy for me to carry about when on transit or walking home. A great idea with the car.
Bread – my husband freezes the freshly baked loaves – they are great unthawed – like they again were baked in the morning.
So relieved to hear Botox is working tho concerned re secondary problem.
I too use the sheets for clothes washing – no more liquid in a plastic jug for me.
    Theodore has a lovely life!
    Must check out those sandals.
I am going to a potluck on Saturday so will make the salad! Perfect that you gave the recipe.

finally!! Some relief… I hope it continues! i’m sorry about the headaches though… That can be challenging. I typically don’t use bags at the grocery store. I just put things back in my cart loose and then in my car loose and then when I get home, I have Trader Joe’s bags. They are the perfect size. In the sense that they don’t get really heavy. I try very hard to be cognizant of throwing away plastic. I recently started using the laundry detergent that comes in an envelope in sheets and has no waist! It’s great. What is the name of that gigantic white flower??? So pretty! I think it needs a big yard but it’s just beautiful . Do you really think you’ll take a road trip and come visit me? Or I could come to you if it’s easy to get from the car to the house… I’ve only been there once I forget I’m glad to hear things are going well.

    Hi Elizabeth,

I’m very happy that the Botox appears to be helping you so far. Fingers and toes crossed.

Wonderful you found some sandals that are comfortable. I have huge feet issues so I more than appreciate that these are working out for you. When you find something that does biting two is smart. You are a good shopper.

I’m happy for you that the Vicks Vapor Rub worked for your fungus on your toe. I agree we all need to help one another. We sometimes live in a world around people that do not share. I’m glad you are not one of them.

Where do you grocery shop? My sister used to live in Orinda. The grocery store must throughly enjoy seeing you every other day and your baskets. Good for you that you are focused on the environment. In Arizona we aren’t as with it as California and other states and countries. It depends on where you shop. Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods are more progressive. I try my best, like others I forget to bring my bags in. When my forever friend from my hometown San Francisco comes here I think she is pretty horrified that we have plastic bags. We both made sure they were in our front seat when we went to the grocery store. It’s just a matter of training yourself and getting into the habit. Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods always has paper bags to offer.

You sound like you cook healthy, do share your salad.

    Take TLC of yourself.

Love your baskets!! I agree there is too much plastic and paper overcrowding and polluting our BEAUTIFUL planet Earth!! Lately, I have been getting my groceries delivered, but when I do go to the stores, I always take a couple of huge bags, similar to the yellow, Italian one in your photo. Love HUGE bags. Can’t stand little, piddly ones! I purchased mine at Winners/ Homesense store here in Ontario, Canada. They are very sturdy. Also, am Loving your new sandals!! I, too, since my early twenties, buy the same style of whatever in different colours! My mother always thought that was silly and just couldn’tunderstand it.
Glad to see Theodorable taking it Easy these days Lol!! And, thrilled to learn that Your Italian is retiring soon!! He works way too much ! He needs to put his feet up and enjoy a few Camparis in the sun, now! Your Rice Salad sounds FABULOUS!! Must try it with balsamico like you!

Here in South Africa we have to pay for plastic bags just about everywhere we shop so we have all taken to using flimsy fabric tote bags that we all keep in the trunk of our cars and carry into the shop when we go in. We still sadly don’t recycle much except in the big cities and consequently the rubbish that is thrown out of moving vehicles is appalling. The median on most roads are quite ghastly. Lovely reading about your exploits and I’m thrilled that the Botox treatment might just be doing the trick. I admit I have Botox for my migraines and wouldn’t do without them for all the tea in China. Keep your chin up Elizabeth Darling you’re definitely, it appears, making in roads into your troubles.

Those market baskets are lovely with their sunny colors! They fit perfectly in the cart. You stated you have had them for years I am wondering if you remember where they are from? I would love to check if they are still available. I enjoy your posts and you’re style. Thank you for bringing joy to many!

Very enjoyable reading this morning. I appreciate the gentle encouragement to quit using plastic bags. I keep cloth bags in my car and sometimes forget to take them in. I will do better! I will give the slides a look when I shop Lululemon. I’m on board if they’re comfortable. Adorable Theodore. I have a tortoiseshell named Brenda Lee.

I learned to be very patient with my Botox for migraine treatments . I was told it would take several sessions. I get the injections every 3 months and took about 9 months before getting amazing results. I finally have my life back. Good luck to you. I enjoy your honesty.

Here in Niagara area, Canada.. plastic bags are banned… if you don’t bring your own you are offered brown, paper bags free of charge currently, but I feel that will change.. I carry a canvas basket with a lovely bamboo handle, lined with plastic for my groceries .. I’ve had it for years… it’s really for gardening, but too pretty for weeding..? and a basket for vegetables… I’m so happy to hear Elizabeth that some things are progressing with your health.. it’s so important to be feeling well… for your own happiness and those around you… I make a pasta salad in the summer that is a staple here at my home too.. please share your rice salad.. I love every snippet of your clothes, shoes etc. that you share… stay well Bella!! ?

I need a photo of your basket!!
You and I on the same path once AGAIN!No surprise there!
I thought we were to ban plastic bags a few years ago but something must have changed!!
Rice salad make UNCLE BENS RICE PER BOX!I do for SIX PEOPLE!Add corn, olives, canned tuna, artichoke hearts and that ITALIAN JAR OF MIXED VEGETABLES YOU FIND IN THE GROCERY STORE under vinegar I believe.Has cauliflower and carrots plus peppers.Chop up in Cusinart not too fine I pulse it instead of ON BUTTON.
Mix all together and add balsamic vinegar and olive oil AlOT place in refrigerator.Serve cold.I also have been known to add cooked hot dogs sliced and peanuts!!!!This recipe came from the HEART IF THE TUSCAN HILLS IN THE 1990’s!!
      Hug to YOU!

So glad to hear that you might be improving. Fingers crossed!
As you know, I live in Wales, and we are either 2 or 3 rd in World for recycling. We’ve had to pay for plastic bags for ,I believe, well over 10 years. Most people have a collection of cloth bags, heavy duty plastic ones and baskets for shopping.
We also have weekly recycling collection, glass collection and collection of food waste weekly. There is an active recycling scene, where people either donate or sell things they know longer need. We also have a monthly repair cafe and a place where you can borrow things, tools etc ,for a small fee.

I don’t think USA as a whole is very high, but obviously vast differences statewide.
        I. UK, generally not so high.
Reason Wales is so high ,is that the Senedd passed legislation which aims at a very high rate.

Botox?! This is exciting news!!! My fingers are crossed for you too.
I love the baskets for shopping , my problem is I always forget to grab the many bags I have in the car! PA is eliminating the plastic but you can buy a paper bag if needed.
    Enjoy the day!!! ?

I really hope that the Botox works for you and that you will finally feel well.
I’m all into recycling and use reusable grocery bags all the time. They’re not as pretty as yours though.
Wishing you a wonderful summer. It’s my least favourite season as I don’t deal with the heat very well.

Recycling is a topic close to my heart Bella. Did you know that supermarket plastic bags are banned here. Everyone takes bags or baskets out shopping. If you forget, you have to buy a bag. Isn’t that fantastic Elizabeth.
I’d heard about Botox injections for migraine. That’s wonderful you’re getting relief from such a debilitating condition. Best of luck now.
    Neat xx
